Video: Between Two Ferns with Seth Galifianakis and Sean Penn

Not only did this summer's box office not set a record high, but there haven't been so few movie tickets sold in over a decade, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Sounds alarming, right? Well, just beyond that gripping lede, the paper adds, "The industry's near-flat summer revenue is largely because of a shorter industry season this year, featuring 18 weekends compared to a year-earlier 19." Oh. So what's the takeaway, then? Allow me to summarize the subsequent 19 paragraphs: summer admissions down 6%; ticket prices up 4.5%; confusion over defining "season" (four grafs); family films are trending!; and so is 3-D! (three grafs); empty analysis (three grafs); sequels! (five grafs); and, to conclude, the nail in Scott Pilgrim's coffin.

What's more tangible than numbers? Cancer. And the New York Times is all over that beat like invasive cells — okay, maybe I'll stop right there. Point is, they're on it, starting with a profile of esteemed critic Roger Ebert, who lost his lower jaw to cancer and now "eats" through a tube, but nonetheless loves to cook. (Can you imagine? That's like being castrated, then heading to a nudie bar.) And then, this morning, the paper's ArtsBeat blog recapped Michael Douglas' appearance on David Letterman's Late Show, in which the actor discusses having Stage IV throat cancer. "This particular type of cancer," he told the talk-show host, "is caused by alcohol and drinking.” Yelling, however, remains a medically safe activity.

Speed round: The Times also tries to make sense of the curious career of Ben Affleck; for those disheartened by the performance of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Moviefone has a list of other box-office disappointments that are now considered cult, or straight-up, classics. The goodwill generated by that article is then immediately dashed by a list of this summer's "winners and losers." And Harvey Keitel might replace Steve Carell on The Office, which sounds like a really funny joke except that it's not. Except that it is. Anyway, Keitel is good at playing a different kind of crazy — unhinged crazy.

In video clips, Zach Galifianakis is back with another "Between Two Ferns," this time with Sean Penn. A foreign trailer (in Russian, I'm guessing) is out for 13, a film about an underground Russian roulette tournaments that stars some of the most masculine men in Hollywood — Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Ray Winstone, Ray Liotta, Michael Shannon — and one of the least, 50 Cent. (Zing! But seriously, Fitty, I'm just messin'.) And the Embed Award goes to this clip, because no one ever tires of Bollywood remakes of Hollywood classics:

I remember the day even now.

Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009: the annual football game between LSU and Florida, a bloodbath in the Deep South that involved two victory-hungry fanbases and enough pro prospects to field a full NFL team. There is a distinct possibility that all 11 of Florida's defensive starters that day will be playing in the NFL in the next three years. 

And all of that was forgotten for one man—Tim Tebow.

Tebow has won two National Championships as quarterback for Florida to go along with being the first-ever sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy. He was home-schooled and grew up in a significantly religious family. His father is a powerful spiritual leader for an Evangelical church, and Tebow himself is famous for his pilgrimages to various prisons and developing countries to help the impoverished and influence people to join his church. 

It is often the case in sports today that ESPN chooses who our sports heroes are far us: Pittsburgh Penguins' forward Sidney Crosby, basketball players LeBron James, Dwight Howard, and Kobe Bryant, the members of the New York Yankees, and Tim Tebow.

Although Tebow is a good player, it is always odd to see him getting the accolades and praise that he receives. In the July 27, 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated, he was pictured on the cover with a determined scowl on his face. The article inside was headlined, "You Gotta Love Tim Tebow," and consisted of a passionate love letter to the man. 

His connection to God is normal, but to see someone flaunt it at every possible turn is nauseating: his comments about how he is waiting for God to tell him who to vote for in the 2008 presidential election; making it very public that he is a virgin—despite the fact that his alleged girlfriend could possibility bring the Internet to a standstill if she ever became famous; declining a spot on the Playboy All-American team because of the misogynist nature of the magazine—and then being photographed shirtless in GQ a couple months later.

When Florida played Kentucky last year, cameras caught Tebow screaming red-faced at his offensive line. He was jumping up and down, pumping his arms, getting right in their faces. Broadcasters referred to the moment as "Tebow pumping his team up. He's a leader, he's telling them to get going." 

The next day, the Buffalo Bills lost to the New Orleans Saints by double digits in which Terrell Owens goes without a catch. Both men have similar reactions, yet it's Owens who gets blasted later on the postgame recaps. 

Tebow, ever since he first chose to play his amateur football at UF, has been the most talked about athlete by a wide margin, even though his skill set and style of play leave him little hope for success as the pro level. 

He has no significant college passing records—a large amount of SEC records, though—and spent the first month of every college year dominating D-II schools. He was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos, who apparently decided to draft their player based on character rather then on skill level.

His play for Denver this preseason has been about average. People would rather talk about him and ignore the outstanding improvements of fellow QB, Kyle Orton. 

His supporter's chalk him up as a selfless individual, but he is known as a scrambling quarterback, a selfish quality that has doomed the pro careers of Akili Smith, Michael Vick, and Vince Young. 

The greatness of Tim Tebow is as false as any politician running for office. His trips to the deepest and darkest southern hemisphere prisons to lecture inmates about God are as false as Sean Penn bringing photographers with him to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina so his "acts of kindness" could be aired all over the world. 

ESPN analyses tell glowing remarks about his character. They are as lame as Fox News reporters preaching conservative ideals, or Bill Maher discussing Barack Obama like he's some 21st century prophet. It's not a bad thing to think of Tebow as a great quarterback, but he doesn't deserve to be called one.

You'd think a little thing like an absent host might prevent "Between Two Ferns" from truckin' forward, but luckily for us, Zach Galifianakis got his twin brother, Seth (pictured at right), to hold down the fort and this week, Sean Penn seats down amid a pair of potted plants for another hardly hard-hitting interview.

Seth's a bit of a sensitive soul, far more Southern than Zach and easily excitable. Sean, however, is just about the opposite of that. Maybe somebody told him that he'd get an award if he made it through this, I don't know. At the very least, he can chalk it up to another humanitarian effort.

What's that? You've never heard of "Between Two Ferns" with Zach Galifianakis? Well, then you're missing out on some seriously hilarious stuff. Over at Funny or Die, an uninformed, idiotic version of Zach Galifianakis has been hosting a public access style talk show with some of the hottest names in Hollywood. Sitting quite literally between two ferns, the comedian asks whatever questions pop into his head complete with random stories, tangents and inappropriate comments. Zach Galifianakis's brother, Seth, takes over for him in this episode of "Between Two Ferns" with guest Sean Penn. The video confirms my belief that Penn is incapable of smiling, and possibly even feeling joy. Maybe I'm wrong though. Maybe the blooper reel is full of Penn rolling on the floor laughing his ass off and his stoic persona is built through the magic of editing. But there's no denying that the ferns look scared sh*tless.

Sean Penn has questioned why Haitian presidential-hopeful Wyclef Jean did not do more to help keep the earthquake-ravaged nation in the public eye this year.

We are used to seeing Sean Penn in slightly more dapper attire.

But, fear not ladies, the dashing actor isn't going through a serious lifestyle change, he's simply in character on the set of his new film, This Must Be The Place.

He plays Cheyenne, a bored and retired former rock star, who's on a mission to find the Nazi war criminal who tortured his estranged father.

'Prizon for the CEP' goes back and forth between English and Creole.

Wyclef Jean is protesting his exclusion from the upcoming presidential election in Haiti the only way he knows how: by releasing a song.

The former Fugees leader posted a new track called "Prizon Pou K.E.P.A." (which translates into "Prison for the CEP") on Wednesday, in which he compares the rigorous scrutiny he faced to a child receiving a failing report card. The title is a pointed reference to the Haitian election commission, CEP, which ruled that he was not eligible to run for office in his birth nation.

"I am contesting, I am going to the court, I am contesting/ I don't agree, I am contesting, I am going to the court, I am contesting," Wyclef sings. "Look, they gave Wyclef a report card/ They say Wyclef, you don't speak Creole/ You are the Diaspora's candidate."

Over a subtle, skittering beat and gently picked acoustic guitar, 'Clef, 40, sings about his disappointment in the ruling in the island's native language of Creole.

"Even my own Haitians curse me out on Facebook when they hear I want to be president," he says before calling out former bandmate Pras for the Fugees member's negative reaction to Wyclef's attempts. "Even my friends say to give Wyclef a report card/ Even the Catholic priests are surprised, they told me to leave Tigoav, come to Les Cayes/ All weekend I was celebrating Our Lady [Notre Dame]."

His tone is sedate and conversational for most of the tune, but at just past the two-minute mark, he breaks into a Bob Marley-like wail, during which his vocals take on a pained, urgent quaver.

The decision to pour out his heart in Creole in the nearly four-minute song is a pointed bid to speak directly to the Haitian people, as well as a possible winking rebuke to actor Sean Penn, who wrote a stinging column for the Huffington Post this week questioning 'Clef's motives in his failed presidential bid, as well as his fluency in the island nation's two main languages: French and Creole.

Jean has pointed words for the nation's current president as well, René Préval, chiding him, "Some militants say it's a deal that I made with Préval/ I didn't make a deal with Préval/ It's [the] president who asked to see a candidate/ I could not refuse/ I said that I was going back to La Serre/ When I arrived, he offered me coffee/ He wanted to assured my friendship/ He said: 'You are a good candidate'/ He put me on the phone with [presidential candidate] Jude Celestin/ We had a very good convo/ After that, Préval f---ing gave me a report card."

He blasts the president, saying he voted for him in 2006 and that it was Préval, not the electoral council, that put a roadblock in 'Clef's path to the presidency.

"It's not Wyclef you gave a report card, it's the youth that you gave a report card," he sings. "It's not Wyclef you gave a report card, it's the population that you gave a report card/ It's not Wyclef you gave a report card, it's the guy that sells [Haitian sweets] 'dous makos' that you gave a report card/ It's not Wyclef you gave a report card, it's the countrymen that you gave a report card/ Look, they gave Wyclef a report card."

But he saves his harshest words for the electoral council, bringing some of the brimstone of his minister father by saying the CEP is "headed by Lucifer."

In the end, he says, he's just sad for the youth, who he urges to support his cause and promises not to give up.
