Yesterday, mobile security firm Lookout announced at the Black Hat security conference that it had discovered a seemingly benign wallpaper application for Android that had been downloaded millions of times — and allegedly harvested user data like text messages and browsing history, which was being sent to servers in China. At least, that's what was reported. Turns out, it looks like the press jumped the gun on reporting this as a major security issue, and the company has posted a clarification to its blog. According to the post, while there is something suspicious going on here, the data these applications are accessing is not nearly as sensitive as some of the initial reports would have you believe (it isn't grabbing your text messages and browsing history). The apps are apparently sending some potentially sensitive data like your subscriber identifier, but even then, the Lookout team says that there is no concrete evidence of malicious behavior:

As you're undoubtedly aware, location is one of the hottest fields out there right now. Startups, services, devices, and advertisers are all hovering around it. As you're also likely well aware, Apple likes to be in control of their own devices. So it should come as no surprise to hear that Apple is moving to be in complete of their own location database. Back in June, Apple changed its privacy policy to reflect some of the newer things they were doing with regard to location. This worried some people -- including two U.S. Congressmen who sent a letter to Apple asking about the change. A couple weeks ago, Apple responded to that inquiry with a letter from Apple's general counsel, Bruce Sewell. The overall main points of that letter have already been covered quite a bit (basically, none of the data Apple collects is linked to a specific user or device and no data is shared without consent). But buried on page 5 of the 13-page letter is a bit of information that's rather interesting.

Though I have a soft spot in my heart for Twitter's famed Fail Whale (come on, it's kind of cute), cheeky and witty fail messages can sometimes leave a pain in my side. This is especially true if I'm logging in to a site for something important. Mostly, it's Firefox's "Well, this is embarrassing . . ." that gets me worked up (hello, I live on the Internet!), but the most recent fail message that made me chuckle was Flickr's pop-up that started with an "Oh dear."

It's unfortunate that the site isn't working properly, but do you think these messages add insult to injury, or do you feel it makes it easier to accept that the site or feature is down if it takes a more humanized approach?

  A new scam is hitting Facebook hard. At first glance it looks like a friend posted a video to their wall, and the description is rather eye catching:

“I am shocked!!! I’m NEVER texting AGAIN since I found this out. http://bit.ly/zzzzz – Worldwide scandal!”  (URL edited for safety)

However, once the link to the video is clicked, you’re taken not to the shocking video but to a rogue Facebook app that asks you to fill out several surveys before it will let you see the video. The surveys are phishing attempts and anyone who fills them out has their personal info compromised and the same link they clicked on posted to their wall in an attempt to lure more people into the phishing web. A similar scam offers a shocking video of a teacher beating a student.

If you see links like this in your newsfeed, don’t click on them. Notify your friend they’ve been caught in a phishing scam. If you fell for it, go to your profile, click Account, then Application Settings and remove the offending apps. You should also immediately change all your passwords, and if you gave out any sensitive info such as bank account or credit card numbers, notify your financial institution right away!

Canadian users will be the envy of many American iOS consumers as the Canadian iPhone 4 will get a 6 GB iPhone plan from wireless carrier Rogers--compared to the $25 2 GB on AT&T--as well as an option for iPad sharing. That's right, you can share you iPhone's data plan, something you haven't been able to do, with a WiFi-only iPad for only $20 more a month, which is inline with AT&T's tethering plan though the US carrier doesn't offer a means to tether your iPhone to the iPad.

It looks like Sprint's finalizing details with HTC as we speak to rollout Froyo as early as tomorrow on the EVO 4G according to the carrier's plans, which were leaked.

According to Engadget, which obtained the plans, the firmware update could be done over the air via 3G/4G/WiFi connected devices and could come as early as 7/30. Initially, if customers want to upgrade to Android 2.2, they can manually check for the update. Sprint will begin pushing out update notifications on August 2.

Speaking at its Financial Analyst Meeting, Microsoft told investors that Internet Explorer 9, also known as IE 9, will enter beta this fall. According to Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner, IE9 is slated for beta in September, though spokespeople for Microsoft would not comment on whether it will be a closed beta for developers or an open beta for public trial.

Microsoft, after many years of dormancy in the browser market, is now making a big push with its Internet Explorer browser; as of the end of June, IE had 60.3% of the market.

It may seem like a foregone conclusion that if you want to get online with one of Apple's portable gadgets and you're away from home, you're pretty much stuck using AT&T.; For some of us, that's no big deal, but if you have problems getting an AT&T; signal, or would just rather use your existing cell company, it can be a bit of a pain. Though that exclusive partnership is still going strong, you may soon be able to easily get around those AT&T; ties, thanks to a 3G-enabled case that looks like it will be coming to Sprint.

Spotted in FCC filings, the case is called the Peel, is made by Chinese company ZTE, and appears to be essentially a mobile hotspot. Instead of a stand-alone device shuttling data between WiFi and 3G connections, giving you something extra to carry around or risk losing, ZTE has built the tech into a case that pops right on the back of your WiFi-only device, presumably the iPod touch, essentially turning its WiFi connection into a 3G Sprint signal.

The Peel has its own internal battery, so it shouldn't put an extra drain on your touch. There's no word yet on when Sprint will start carrying the device, but it may be waiting for Apple to release an iPhone 4-based iPod touch to make sure the Peel stays compatible.

Trident Microsystems Reports Results for Second Quarter Ended June 30, 2010

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Trident Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRID), a leader in high-performance semiconductor system solutions for the connected home, today announced results for its second quarter ended June 30, 2010. The second quarter included the full benefit of the TV and Set-Top Box product lines acquired from NXP in February 2010.

For the quarter, the company reported net revenues of $171.6 million, which compares with $90.4 million in the prior sequential quarter and $14.9 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2009. On a generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”) basis, the company reported a net loss for the quarter of $49.0 million, or $0.28 per share. The net loss for the second quarter of 2010 compares with a net loss of $7.6 million, or $0.06 per share in the prior sequential quarter and a net loss of $21.1 million, or $0.32 per share, in the quarter ended June 30, 2009.

Non-GAAP Results

Non-GAAP net loss for the quarter was $14.8 million, or $0.09 per share, which compares with a non-GAAP net loss of $25.8 million, or $0.20 per share, in the prior sequential quarter and a non-GAAP net loss of $15.7 million, or $0.24 per share, in the quarter ended June 30, 2009. For the fourth quarter, WPCS reported revenue of $29.2 million compared to $24.7 million for the same period a year ago, which represents an increase of approximately 18%, and compared to $27.0 for the third quarter of fiscal 2010, or an increase of 8% sequentially.

In the fourth quarter, WPCS generated earnings before interest, taxes, acquisition-related contingent earn-out costs, and depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of approximately $1.1 million which represents a 46% sequential increase from the third quarter achievement of $751,000. The company generated $1.1 million in EBITDA for the same period a year ago.

For the fourth quarter, non-GAAP net income was approximately $137,000 or $0.02 per diluted share. For the year ended April 30, 2010, non-GAAP net income was approximately $979,000 or $0.14 per diluted share compared to $1.7 million or $0.23 per diluted share for the same period a year ago.

For the fiscal year ended April 30, 2010, WPCS reported total revenue of approximately $105.8 million compared to $107.1 million for the same period a year ago. WPCS reported EBITDA of approximately $4.4 million compared to $5.7 million for the same period a year ago.

From a GAAP perspective, the fourth quarter ended April 30, 2010, generated net income of approximately $12,000 or less than one penny of earnings per diluted share, which includes a non-cash charge of $125,000 recorded for fiscal year 2010 which compares to $293,000 or $0.04 per diluted share for the same period a year ago.

For the fiscal year ended April 30, 2010, WPCS reported net income of approximately $854,000 or $0.12 per diluted share, which again includes the non-cash charge of approximately $125,000 recorded for fiscal year 2010 which compares to approximately $1.7 million or $0.23 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. The non-cash charge is the result of the newly mandated accounting pronouncement regarding acquisitions that was adopted by the company this fiscal year and applied to the Pride Group acquisition in Australia.

Quarterly revenue of $39.6M – highest level achieved in over a decade

FREMONT, Calif., July 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Exar Corporation (Nasdaq: EXAR), today reported financial results for its fiscal 2011 first quarter ended June 27, 2010.

Net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 were $39.6 million compared to net sales of $38.5 million for the prior quarter and $30.9 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

The GAAP gross margin for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 was 47.5% compared to 50.4% for the prior quarter and 41.6% in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

On a non-GAAP basis, the gross margin for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 was 52.1% compared to 54.0% for the prior quarter and 52.1% in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

The GAAP net loss for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 was $7.4 million, or $0.17 net loss per share, compared to a net loss of $3.3 million, or $0.08 net loss per share in the prior quarter, and a net loss of $12.9 million, or $0.30 net loss per share, for the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

On a non-GAAP basis, the net loss was $0.8 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 or $0.02 net loss per share, compared to net income of $1.5 million in the prior quarter, or $0.03 diluted earnings per share, and a net loss of $3.1 million, or $0.07 net loss per share, in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

The Company ended the first quarter of fiscal 2011 with cash, cash equivalents and short-term marketable securities of $208.2 million.

SANTA ANA, Calif., July 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Ingram Micro Inc. (NYSE: IM), the world’s largest technology distributor, today announced double-digit increases in sales and triple-digit increases in profits for the second quarter ended July 3, 2010.

Worldwide sales for the second quarter totaled $8.16 billion, an increase of 24 percent compared with $6.58 billion in the prior-year second quarter. The translation impact of foreign currencies was not material to consolidated revenues as general strengthening of currencies in Asia-Pacific and Latin America were offset by an overall weakening of European currencies.

Net income and earnings per share more than doubled, reaching $67.7 million or $0.41 per diluted share. This compares with $25.3 million or $0.15 per diluted share last year, which included $0.05 per diluted share related to charges for expense-reduction programs and a goodwill impairment associated with the company’s acquisitions in Asia-Pacific.

Outlook for Calendar Year 2010

The Company is raising its revenue growth guidance for calendar year 2010 to a range of approximately 15% to 17% over calendar year 2009, up from 13% to 15% growth over calendar year 2009. The Company is also raising its guidance for calendar year 2010 adjusted EBITDA, which excludes costs associated with the acquisition of Concuity that were incurred in the quarter ended March 31, 2010, to a range of approximately $37 million to $41 million, up from a range of $35.5 million to $40.5 million.
