With only six races to go in the 2010 Formula One Championship season, it’s time for the big teams to make some difficult decisions and pick a preferred driver for the remainder of the season to maximize the team’s chances of taking out the championship.

Leading in to the Belgian Grand Prix, there were five drivers who were in a position—some better than others—to take out the championship with both McLaren and Red Bull drivers being joined by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso as the outside chance.

Coming out of the race, everything has changed. Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber have opened up clear breaks on their respective teammates. Both now have over a full race win advantage and surely must now be anointed as their team’s No. 1 driver.

At Red Bull, the decision is seemingly very easy. Despite statements from the team earlier this year after the Turkish Grand Prix and some shenanigans around preferential treatment with access to newly developed parts at Silverstone, Webber has taken a clear step forward and established himself as the team’s best hope to take out the championship.

It may well be that Sebastian Vettel has more raw talent than Webber, but his inconsistency, rash decisions and propensity to crash has destroyed his chances for success this year. His race at Spa merely served to underline the already widespread belief that his impetuousness would cost him the championship.

The manoeuvre that Vettel pulled which lead to the collision with Jenson Button defies explanation. It was an extremely aggressive move which ended with Button’s car out of the race and Vettel heading in for one of five trips to the pits for the race. He was to pit at least once more for puncturing his tyre in a later overtaking effort that went wrong.

His litany of mistakes meant that he came out of the race without points and now sits 28 points behind Webber and should be told to support his more consistent teammate over the remaining races.
At McLaren, a similar situation has arisen, but for completely different reasons. Jenson Button was the innocent victim of today’s action, but has been slowly slipping behind his teammate since his early successes in Australia and China.

While there would be a fair bit of sympathy for the reigning world champion, the terrible reality of F1 is that it cares little for reputation and previous success. All that matters is getting the team in the best possible position to take out the championship.

Of course, team orders are specifically banned in the world of F1, so neither Button or Vettel could be told to yield to their more highly placed teammates, but there are any number of tactics that can be employed.

Cars can develop “brake problems” or “lose grip” to help explain a drop in lap times to allow a team mate to pass.

Subtlety is the key, lest teams want to end up facing the wrath of the administrators. Ferrari will be able to advise of the consequence after they face the World Motor Sport Council in ten days time to face charges arising out of the German GP.

The teams have a couple of weeks to figure out how to progress their season before the circus hits Monza—another circuit that the McLaren’s will like more than Red Bull. From there it is back to tracks that are better suited to Red Bull’s strengths for the remainder of the season.

The racing may not be exciting, but there is plenty of interest remaining in the title chase with only three points separating leader Hamilton for Webber.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton won an incident-packed Belgian grand prix to seize back the Formula One championship lead from Red Bull's Mark Webber.

After the race, Webber, who began on pole but finished second, called on Red Bull to choose who is the team's No1 driver between him and Sebastian Vettel. The Australian said the decision is "still too early but not too far away. I think it depends on how hungry we are."

On an afternoon where the fickle Spa weather played its hand to full effect the safety car was deployed twice. McLaren's Jenson Button was forced to retire after a collision with Vettel, who was given a drive-through penalty as a result and finished 15th, while Fernando Alonso spun out of the race in his Ferrari. Poland's Robert Kubica finished third for Renault.

"To be taken out like that is disappointing," Martin Whitmarsh, the McLaren team principal, said of Button's retirement. Referring to Vettel's collision with Webber at the Turkish grand prix earlier in the season, Whitmarsh added: "I'd rather he take out his own team-mate than [our driver]."

Hamilton now has 182 points to Webber's 179 with six races remaining. Vettel is third, 31 points behind Hamilton, with Button and Alonso fourth and fifth respectively.

"It was a great weekend, a very tough race for me, the same for everyone," Hamilton said. "I was praying it would be a race that would go smoothly, but then the rain came late on and I locked my wheels at turn eight, but thankfully I got away with it.

"We didn't know what to expect, but fortunately I got round and changed the tyres – it was probably the best one this year.

"Again fortunately it didn't rain any more, and in the end it was about nursing the car home, making sure it stayed in one piece and bagging the points. I'm very proud of the job the team did, and I'm so glad to be here."

Explaining his abysmal start, Webber said: "I had a big bump on the formation lap, and although we altered the clutch, it was worse at the start. Once you have a micro-problem there it's massively exaggerated by the performance of the other guys.

"After that it was a pretty mixed-up race, so I'm happy with second in the end. To have the top-three qualifiers on the podium after a race like that you could never have predicted, although the top two are the wrong way round for me."

Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton admit that they must capitalise on helpful conditions in the next two races if either of them are to have any chance of winning the world championship.

The long straights at Spa this weekend and Monza in the next race should both suit the McLaren over their closest rivals Red Bull and Ferrari. Yet if Button or Hamilton fail to take advantage, the Woking-based team could struggle going into the season's final five races.

Button said: "This is a little window for us. We know these next two races are important for us. They will suit us for one reason or another – lower downforce or aerodynamic parts on the car – but our pace will be a lot closer and we need to make that count before we get back to high downforce tracks.

"It's crazy how close the first five are. It's not been like that for many years. We've got to finish every race from here on. Consistency is important but there is no point being consistently sixth. You have to be fighting for a podium every race."

Hamilton agreed with his team-mate. "It's very likely that this race and the next race [in Monza] are the two where we're going to be closest to them for the rest of the year, based on the car that we have now."

Hamilton finished second and third in today's practice sessions, which were dominated by Ferrari's Fernando Alonso. Button (sixth and seventh) had a less fluent day. Hamilton, however, is determined to remain upbeat. "Deep down I believe it can happen," he said. "Like I've said, there's a long way to go, and we could win this weekend. I just don't know what to expect. But I'm here to fight for the win, so I will keep pushing to the end."

Red Bull, meanwhile, have come under attack for the way they have treated the championship leader Mark Webber. Alan Jones, a former world champion and the last Australian to take the title, has been upset by the way Red Bull have appeared to favour Sebastian Vettel, who remains the narrow favourite to win the title.

Jones, a blunt-talking Aussie from Melbourne who won the championship with Williams in 1980 – the second Australian to do so after Sir Jack Brabham – has been particularly annoyed by the way Red Bull reacted to the crash involving their two drivers in the Turkish grand prix earlier in the summer. The team appeared to blame Webber for the incident even though Vettel was at fault for steering into the Australian's path.

Jones said today: "If they had spoken to me as they did to Mark after the Turkey race, I would have been pissed off. It was bloody ridiculous because I saw the crash and it was obviously Vettel's fault. He blew it. So for [the team principal] Christian Horner and [the consultant] Helmut Marko to come out with what they did really was a bit rich."

Now Jones, 63, who was known as "AJ" in his racing days, is backing Webber – 34 tomorrow – to beat his team-mate, especially if it comes down to a war of nerves.

He said: "Mark has done it the hard way. He's done the hard yards and he can win it now. He's proven. He's got the speed.

"He hasn't had a reliable car in the past but he has now. And if it comes to a psychological battle I would back Mark every time. He has done a lot for motor sport in Australia. What he has do now is get his side of the garage behind him. With a bit of luck he can win the world championship.

"I went to watch to races at Bahrain and Melbourne. Red Bull obviously have a chassis advantage."

But Webber trailed in 18th place in this afternoon's second practice session, having been seventh in the morning.

McLaren's team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, is convinced harmony is the key to winning both of this year's Formula One world titles and he can clearly sense friction and discord in the camps of their main rivals, Red Bull and Ferrari.

Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel have been at odds twice already this season, the bad feeling coming to the surface after the Red Bull pair crashed while running first and second in the Turkish grand prix and being intensified by the front-wing controversy this month at Silverstone.

At Ferrari, Felipe Massa must now be wondering about his worth to the team after being ordered to let Fernando Alonso past and into the lead during Sunday's German grand prix at Hockenheim. It is clear Massa will now be expected to play rear gunner in Alonso's title bid and, however sensible that approach is, it will be dispiriting for the Brazilian.

"We decide to race with our drivers racing," Whitmarsh said ahead of Sunday's Hungarian grand prix. "In the longer term, it is the healthy thing to do for this team. It is my decision and what we want to do, whereas others do what they want to do. That is up to them. Our modus operandi is simply to make our car as quick as we can, concentrate on that."

Referring to the proximity of the three teams' motor homes in the Hungaroring paddock, he added: "We've also good harmony in our team, possibly better harmony now than our neighbours.

We're leading the championship but we have to accelerate the process of developing the car. Obviously I want to win this year's world championship, and the right thing to do is to concentrate on what we do, how we do it."

Lewis Hamilton, the championship leader, believes the feelgood factor at McLaren coupled with the bad blood at Red Bull and Ferrari will assist his team's title ambitions. "For us, our harmony allows us to focus on our job," he said. "It's always tough in any part of life when you are trying to focus on one thing, and you've other things distracting you a little. As for us, we've all our resources focused on trying to hammer down, and that is a good thing for us."

The Hungaroring, where Hamilton won last year and Jenson Button scored his maiden grand prix victory with Honda in 2006, should be a circuit more suited to the McLaren but the car's lack of pace is a concern.

Hamilton, though, appears not too worried by the speed Ferrari showed, particularly in the hands of Alonso, in Germany. "We're not at the point where we're worried about people catching us up or anything like that," he said. "We're fighting for a championship so inevitably other drivers are going to be hunting us down. The only concern for myself, Jenson and the team, is our pace because we feel we should be quicker and we need to figure out where we are losing the time."

Mark Webber is convinced there will come a time when Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton suffer an on-track shunt. The Australian Red Bull driver also feels there is a touch of "smoke and mirrors" to their relationship at McLaren.

Like Webber's partnership with his team-mate Sebastian Vettel there is a rivalry, simply because of who they are and what they are striving for. At Red Bull, that was amply demonstrated after the accident during the Turkish grand prix at the end of May that wrecked a near-certain one-two.

Vettel's failed pass on Webber resulted in the German spinning into retirement and the Australian finishing third behind the McLaren pair. Webber says his relationship with Vettel is "pretty good" but it is clearly not all sweetness and light, and the Australian believes there is a similar story at McLaren.

"If Seb's drowning in the ocean then I'll go and help him out. We don't hate each other's guts," said Webber, speaking at the Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes. "If you look at Jarno [Trulli] and Heikki [Kovalainen, at Lotus], there's not much at stake so they're going to get on.

"But when you're at the front and both trying to win there's going to be a healthy competitive rivalry. It's totally natural. It's not easy to have a beautiful, fuzzy, warm relationship when your team-mate is clearly a competitor. That is absolutely the case at McLaren too. They are working hard to put smoke and mirrors up because those two are racing hard."

When it was put to Webber that Hamilton and Button had not been involved in an incident, although they came close to doing so in Turkey, he replied: "Not yet. If you're always racing at the front, inevitably it's going to come.

"I don't want the headlines to be 'Jenson and Hamilton are going to hit each other this weekend'. That's not what I'm saying. It's inevitable because of what's at stake, and that they're both hungry, both driven.

"If I'd got no competition about me, no real fire or desire, then I'd get on with Seb like a house on fire."

Webber insisted the whole team has learned from the Istanbul debacle and that a repeat of such an incident is "unlikely". But after two accidents in the last three races, Webber is looking forward to reviving his title challenge after previously taking up the championship lead following back-to-back wins in Barcelona and Monaco.

The 33-year-old today revealed that after his triumph around the streets of Monte Carlo, the team presented him with the car as a memento – only for him to destroy it in Valencia 10 days ago.

That was after Webber was catapulted into the air after running into the back of Kovalainen's car on the fastest part of the track.

During a guided tour of the Red Bull factory with Christian Horner, the team principal showed the car is currently under repair and will actually serve as the spare at this weekend's British grand prix.

For the team's home race at Silverstone, Webber will use one of Vettel's former chassis from this season.

"I don't get attached to cars, but clearly that one was unique," said Webber. "The team gave me that car after Monaco. They said I could have it as a present, which was nice, but of course the car is now trashed.

"They'll probably give me something else. I don't know. We'll have a chat about that. But the car did a great job for me in two cases. It won races for me, and it looked after me when I needed it.

"After the accident the boys [his mechanics] put some messages on it, one of which was obviously 'RIP'. But another read 'You gave me the best day of my life [the win in Monaco], and you also saved my mate.' That says it all."

Mark Webber is adamant he would not have signed a new deal with Red Bull without being certain he commands equal status with his team-mate, Sebastian Vettel.

The Australian's one-year extension, which was announced on Monday and takes him through to the end of next season, came eight days after an explosive Turkish grand prix.

There were suggestions at the time of favouritism towards Vettel, even though he appeared to be at fault for turning into Webber, resulting in the young German spinning out of the race.

Helmut Marko, the team's racing adviser and right-hand man to the owner, Dietrich Mateschitz, was one of the key personnel to lay the blame at Webber's door.

The 33-year-old Australian, though, had no qualms in putting pen to paper on his latest contract. "Nothing has changed in any of the contracts since I've been here, ever. It's always been straight up," said the championship leader.

"At this stage in my career I would never hang around for another season if I didn't think I was going to get a fair crack, so it's all good. I'm comfortable in the team and have been since I arrived.

"When Seb came in there was some nice momentum, a young, new charge and all that sort of stuff, which was good. Since then I've just kept my head down and tried to do my job and this year it has turned out pretty well for me.

"To be honest, the team have been great to both of us and that's why we've such a good package. We're pushing each other and it's been good."

Webber maintains there is no lingering animosity towards Marko in particular, with the picture set straight after "a good chat" with him at the team's factory in Milton Keynes.

"Helmut wasn't fully up to speed with all the facts at the time," added Webber. "He was pretty quick with his comments, which he's learned from and will now move on. He brought Seb along, speaks the same language, so you can expect a bit of emotional support that way, but I'm fine with that. There are a lot of things that have happened with this team through his support and I've been off the back of that as well."

As for Mateschitz, initial anger soon subsided and he ended up talking to both drivers, allaying fears of any possible reprisals.

"I had a very positive phone call with him on Monday morning when I landed," said Webber. "He was, as he has always been with me, very good, fair, loyal, so that was another reason why I have good belief in the team. Dietrich obviously had his opinion, which was fine for me. I'm also cool, absolutely fine. I'm totally over it and ready to go this weekend. I'm looking forward to getting back on the track."

Red Bull Racing's team principal, Christian Horner, has no qualms about the fact that neither of his team's drivers has apologised or admitted they were to blame for the collision they suffered at the Turkish grand prix.

The accident between Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber at Istanbul Park wrecked a probable one-two finish for Red Bull and still looms large 12 days later, ahead of the continuation of the championship with Sunday's race Canadian grand prix in Montreal.

In particular, Vettel remains staunchly adamant there was nothing wrong with his manoeuvre that resulted in the German spinning out and Webber requiring a pit stop to have a new front wing fitted, which relegated him to third.

The 22-year-old Vettel would certainly appear to have been most at fault for turning in too early as he attempted to complete his pass of the Australian Webber.

Talks at the team's Milton Keynes headquarters eight days ago, designed to clear the air, seem only to have widened the divide between the pair.

Asked in Montreal if he was OK that neither of his driver had admitted they were at fault, Horner replied: "Absolutely. It's not a matter of who is right or wrong. Both drivers accept it was a really bad outcome for the team, and for them. Both lost out and lost points, Sebastian obviously more than Mark.

"Was it wrong to allow the drivers to race each other? I don't think it was. If we want processions then we will tell the drivers after the start to hold position. But that's not what Red Bull is about, not what our beliefs of grand prix racing should be about.

"Therefore we'll continue to allow the drivers to race each other, but expect they respect each other as team-mates, as they have done on so many different occasions during the last 18 months."

Horner strongly denied suggestions of favouritism towards Vettel. "It's a wrong perception because we support both drivers absolutely equally," Horner said. "There were a couple of comments made without all the facts at the end of the race, but we've talked about it, covered that, and we've moved on.

"Up to lap 39 the Turkish grand prix was set to be our biggest victory, taking on McLaren head to head in a really exciting race. We had out-strategised them, out-performed them as a team at the pit stops and so on, so it was desperately disappointing to lose that grand prix victory.

"But the drivers have had constructive discussions following it. I got everybody together in Milton Keynes last Thursday, and we've moved on. We're focused on this race, and it's business as usual."

Horner believes people forget Red Bull Racing, in only their sixth season, are still a young team. "From a team perspective it's a voyage of discovery because we are still young. The progress we have made over the last five years is quite remarkable," Horner said.
