'Dancing with the Stars': Betty White, Bill Clinton were both considered by ... Examiner.com We now officially know the cast for "Dancing with the Stars" next week, but that doesn't mean that the twelve people set to enter the ballroom were the only ...

ABC has announced the 12 couples who will compete for the mirror ball trophy on Season 11 of Dancing with the Stars.

Here's my gut reaction ... share yours in the comments below.

1. Singer Michael Bolton with SYTYCD alum Chelsie Hightower
It's a little creepy with the age difference, IMHO. I love Chelsie, but I think they might want to stick to pairing her with cute little guys like Louie until she looks a bit less teenage.

2. Singer Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
This could be promising. Although Brandy isn't one of the more dance-oriented pop singers out there -- not so polished that she'll be a ringer like last season's winner, Nicole Scherzinger -- she, at least, should have good musicality and rhythm. (Although, scratch that ... it's not like being a pop singer made that a given for Belinda Carlisle.)

3. Comedian Margaret Cho and Louis van Amstel
I am stoked about this pairing. I thought Louis was awesome and brave (and that the producers were also cool) for sharing his feelings on how the gay marriage issue personally affects him during last season. It was unexpected, personal and did I say awesome? Besides being bisexual herself (despite now being in a traditional marriage), Cho has long been a vocal advocate and activist for LGBT causes. This is a match made in heaven, as far as I'm concerned.

4. Former NBA star Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke
I confess, I didn't know who Fox was before now, so I can't say too much about his dancing or his star quality. I can say that he and Cheryl look like they'll make a very handsome couple.

5. Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough
Please, please tell me they'll recreate the closing scene from Dirty Dancing, please??? I think it would be cool, not sacrilege. I will say that I miss Jennifer's original, Dirty Dancing nose. I know she is more conventionally pretty now, but who didn't fall in love with her way back then? If it ain't broke (or maybe if it is, but it's cute and uniquely yours) don't fix it! OK, let me have it ... I don't normally comment on plastic surgery, but her picture is pretty unrecognizable from that girl in Ferris Bueller and Dirty Dancing, and it's not an age thing.

6. "International Superstar" David Hasselhoff and Kym Johnson
Speaking of pictures, there's more spray tan in the picture of David and Kym than at a George Hamilton Open! So, you know, the Hoff. What can I say? OK, I can say: I'm really not that interested in seeing him on television, that's what.

7. Actress/singer Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas
Yup, it's this year's inspiration to senior citizens. I actually just saw Henderson perform live in San Francisco because one of my cousins is touring as one of her back-up singers. She is spry ... and surprisingly randy. Cloris Leachman and Betty White aren't the only ones who can tell a surprising dirty joke! While Florence's voice was showing some age, she seemed to be in great shape in every other way, so inspiration she will likely be -- and probably to everyone!

8. Teen TV star Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer
Well, again, I'm hampered by not knowing who this kid is. Who wants to fill in the blanks?

9. Alaskan First Daughter Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas
Described as a "teen advocate," Bristol will grab her own spot in the spotlight. Here's my prediction: Rather than political snark, instead we'll hear sexist snark wondering who's taking care of her baby ... just as people have done with other moms on the show, without ever wondering if the male "stars" even have kids.

10. Reality TV star Audrina Partridge and Tony Dovolani
Having never watch "The Hills"... and admit it: I know some of you are addicted. I also cannot comment much on this pairing. It might be another, reverse, creepy age difference in this case, though.

11. Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and Karina Smirnov
It pains me to even have to type "The Situation," given that I find the whole existence of a person who has nicknamed their abs -- and a country that has willingly adopted that as part of his official name -- to be pretty sad. I am sure we are going to hear nothing but rumors and innuendo about this pairing!

12. Football player Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya
Another handsome couple, and football players tend to do well on the show. I'd give this pair good odds.

The thing I like: No obvious ringers. No figure skaters or gymnasts, no refugees from a dance-oriented boy (or girl) band. If you look at the winners of the first few years of DWtS, they were underdogs or unexpected. In the last few years, you could have predicted the finals from the beginning. Now it's not so clear.

That won't stop me from predicting, but it's not based on existing skills and advantages.

So here goes, my predictions for, let's say, the Top Four:

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough
Football player Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya
Singer Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Teen TV star Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer

The annual Primetime Emmy Awards, for the 62nd time, still finds a way to offer a little something for everyone. Whether it's host Jimmy Fallon joined by the "Glee" cast, Tina Fey, and others for the comical opening number, or simply Betty White in her amazing sherbet-inspired getup that tickles your fancy, the Emmys make for an exciting Sunday night. Listed below are several apps around 2010 Emmy Award-winning shows, actors and actresses. Almost as good as if you had witnessed the red carpet parade in person . . . well, not really, but close.

Hot off her Emmy Award winning hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, the 88-year-old Golden Girls actress will appear in the upcoming season premiere of the NBC comedy, Community.

While 1984 was an insanely banner year for television, where almost every single new series was a hit that would run throughout the rest of the decade, 1985 was more about trying to capitalize on the previous year's successes.  Though there are a few shows that could easily be deemed TV classics, a lot of the new series were either directly aping recent hits, or were trying to carry on the torch of shows that were on their last legs.

Two of the stand-out new series that would go on to help define the decade couldn't have been more disparate in theme.  On the one hand we have the Golden Girls starring Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, and Betty White, which had a much broader audience than I'd bet the studio predicted.  On the other we have MacGyver, which was finally the vehicle that would launch Richard Dean Anderson into stardom as pacifist secret agent Angus MacGyver who can solve any problem with some bubblegum, a toothpick, and a lock of his inspiring mullet.  Whereas the Golden Girls would prove to studios that age had no bearing on comedy success, MacGyver was a good 15 years ahead of it's time illustrating that there is an audience for detailed procedural science and technology outside of PBS (even if most of it's science and tech was pure hokum.)  Think about it, would we have shows like CSI and Mythbusters without MacGyver?

       

Getting back to the apparent theme of capitalizing on other series successes, in 1985 we were introduced to three long-running shows that were direct descendants of other productions from the early 80s.  Mr. Belvedere picked up where Benson and Who's the Boss left off, dusting his was way into America's hearts and minds, while Growing Pains introduced the world to the wicked smile of Kirk Cameron, and one of America's most famous stars, Bruce Willis, got his first big break as David Addison opposite Cybil Shepherd's Maddie Hayes in Moonlighting.  Whereas Moonlighting was aping multiple hits such as Remington Steele and Scarecrow & Mrs. King, Growing, Growing Pains was taking sight as just one show, Family Ties, stealing not only the basic family dynamic, but also the concept for it's opening credits sequence (told in a series of family photos.)  At least Moonlighting would find it's own kooky voice as the years went on, setting it apart from the series it took inspiration from.

       

Similarly, based on the success of the relatively new anthology series Tales From the Darkside, 1985 would see an explosion of scary and interesting anthology TV that lasted well into the 90s.  Making their debut that year were three new series, the Steven Spielberg Produced Amazing Stories, as well as two series reboots, the all new Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.  Though none of these three series would run for that long, they were the first big wave of anthology television that would be followed by shows like Monsters, Freddy's Nightmares, Tales From the Crypt, and eventually a second Outer Limits series.

My favorite new series of 1985 was also probably one of the least successful shows that year, Misfits of Science.   Starring Kevin Peter Hall (the guy inside Harry from Harry and the Hendersons, as well as the guy inside the original Predator), Dean Paul Martin (son of Dean Martin, and ex-husband of Olivia Hussey and Dorothy Hamill), Courtney Cox (yeah, that Courtney Cox), and Mark Thomas Miller (ex-bodyguard for Van Halen) as a group of super-powered scientists and their subjects.  Though Martin's character, Billy Hayes, doesn't have any powers, he leads the team consisting of his assistant Dr. Elvin Lincoln (Hall), who can shrink down in size to a mere 11 inches (Hall in real life was a towering 7' 2"), and two research subjects, Johnny Bukowski (Miller) who is a rock star that was electrocuted and now has the power as a conduit and can shoot bolts of lightening from his hands, and Gloria Dinallo, a telekinetic young girl who believes her father was an alien…

       

There were a few other interesting debuts in 1985.  For one, we got our first exposure to Jaleel White in Charlie in Company (four years before he’d set the world alight with his obnoxious Steve Urkel.)   We also got a chance to see a young Michael Madsen fresh off his small cameo in Wargames, in the cop show Our Family Honor.

 

One of the things I love about looking through these old TV Guides is getting a glimpse at the various cartoon schedules and advertisements.  In this issue we got a chance to see a variation of the 1985 CBS ad that ran in comic books back in the day. In this version we get a slightly more accurate portrait of Hulk Hogan as well as a clearly depiction of the "Monsters" from the retooled Muppet Babies cartoon.  In '85 Muppet Babies was popular enough to have a second live action half hour added to the show that revolved around the adult Muppets and a series of monster characters.  Jim Henson pulled the plug on the this addendum series after three episodes though, and the for the remainder of the season they ran two MB episodes back to back.

There's also an ad for the regular Challenge of the Go Bots cartoon (returning for a full series run after the previous year's 5-episode miniseries debut.)…

The other thing I really dig about this 1985 issue is all of the awesome artwork for shows like Knight Rider, Small Wonder, and Webster.

 

The art looks a whole heck of a lot like Drew Struzan's work, but I don't know for sure.  Though I'm sure its extremely cost prohibitive, it would have been so damn cool if the TV Guide company or the studios had commissioned this type of artwork for the entire season of these shows…

The last thing I wanted to point out in this issue is a series of star-studded specials that ran in the fall of 1985.   Seems like all the stations were gearing up for these gala events to get the word out on the new fall season.   Though the art is awesome in the below CBS ad, I love the NBC ad the most because of Don Johnson's swagger.  Though this is a composite shot, apparently the network wanted to play up his bad boy attitude by putting him front and center as the only guy who is too damn cool to wear a tux.  I wonder if he was all Miami Viced up for the actual special as well?

Looky, looky at what fresh gem the Interwebs has unearthed this week: A young David Letterman -- with dorky shirt, a full-on Alfred E. Neuman smile and a hairdo that looks like a hair helmet -- playing celebrity contestant on Dick Clark's '$20,000 Pyramid.'

Of course, that wasn't the late night legend's only game show appearance. From a shirtless Letterman leading a CBS team's canoe race on 'Battle of the Network Stars' to Dave playing 'Password Plus' with Mr. Betty White, the talk show host has enough game show history to warrant his own GSN special. Why has this incredible woman -- six time Emmy-award winner and pioneer for women in the media -- been reduced to the role of potty-mouthed, simpleton granny?

Remember LAKE PLACID? That campy horror flick about giant alligators or crocodiles or some shit? And Betty White was in it? Well, apparently they made a ‘part deux’, and I’ve just been sent a press release for part 3 which looks pretty ridiculous - and by that I mean ridiculously awesome!

As one of the 15 people who legitimately liked PIRANHA 3D, I 100% can’t wait to see this.

It's six (slightly NSFW) minutes out of your life, and the connection to education is tenuous at best, but you always knew you were born to run. There's the kids from Glee, Jimmy Fallon as Springsteen, Don Draper and Liz Lemon dancing and singing. Plus Betty White and Kate Gosselin.

The ratings were about the same as last year. So congratulations to the Chabad telethon.

In response to my comment about winner Jim Parsons I received a nice note from David Hyde Pierce reminding me that HE is the young David Hyde Pierce.

MAD MEN’S Matt Weiner also emailed to say that his co-writer Erin Levy was being hugged by her father out of camera view and that’s why she lagged so far behind him bounding up to the stage. Thanks Matt. There should be walk-off music for winners who hug too long in the aisles.

The three-hour show finished on time although I’m sure the producers were worried that the minute they got off the air they’d realize, “Shit! We forgot to give out Best Actor”.

One reason the Emmys didn’t get stellar ratings is that a lot of people (most everyone I talked to) found themselves saying, “Who’s that?” fifty times during the broadcast. That’s the good and bad news of all the new faces now on the TV scene.

Jimmy Fallon generally got very positive reviews. Of course, after the year the five reality show emcees hosted, Manny Ramirez could do a better job.

How many A-list parties will Temple Grandin be invited to NEXT year? She’s this year’s Roberto Benigni.

What does the Academy have against serial killers?

Please Academy: no more lame bits introducing the accountants, don’t strive for class and elegance and then feature Kim Kardashian, don’t have washed-up pop stars sing their own dreary compositions for the “In Memoriam” feature. Think of the dear departed themselves. Do you think Soupy Sales would have okayed that Jewel song for his funeral?

I couldn’t tell. There’s a rumor going around that for the “In Memoriam” tribute they showed a shot of Fred Savage and identified him as Corey Haim.

BREAKING BAD won’t have their new season on the air soon enough to be eligible for next year’s Emmys. So Hugh Laurie will lose to Jon Hamm instead of Bryan Cranston next year.

The most beautiful girl of the night was never shown on camera. Brook Burke of (judging by the just-announced contestants) DANCING WITH THE FREAK SHOW.

How soon until the major networks dump the Emmys and they’ll start rotating between cable networks? So one year they’re on LOGO, then BOOMERANG, then the Home Shopping Channel.

Comedy writing staffs for every show spent at least two hours this morning ripping the shit out of every single person who won. An hour just on Julia Ormond alone. But all the winners were ingrates, lucky, talentless, undeserving, fat. All except Betty White. She'll be spared.

Thanks for all the nice comments on my Emmy review. It was much harder to write this year because the show wasn’t that bad. I think Fox has it next year so that shouldn’t be a problem. Tim McCarver will make the perfect host.

• Will Smith – The Overbrook High School yearbook photo of top international box-office star and Academy Award nominee, Will Smith, shows he was once a high school student perplexed by science, in 1986 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before he was a ‘man in black.’
• Alec Baldwin – Alexander Baldwin was no high school activity slouch at Alfred G. Berner High School in Massapequa, New York. In 1976, he served as Class President, and was a member of the youth council, drama club, the student activities council, the lacrosse and football teams.
• Brad Pitt – Academy Award-nominee and Angelina Jolie’s significant other exercised his creativity in high school as a member of the 1981-82 Kickapoo High School Student Council in Springfield, Missouri. This newly discovered photo finds Pitt creating the decorations for the school’s “Chief Ceremonial.”
• Nicolas Cage – A very young Nicolas Coppola is pictured in his Beverly Hills High School 1979 yearbook official picture looking quite serious hiding any glimpse to the versatile star’s great sense of humor.
• Jay Leno – The “Tonight Show” host was recognized early on by his classmates who named him the “funniest” in this candid photo of Leno in his Loyola Academy (Andover, Massachusetts) 1966 yearbook. Also noted next to his class yearbook photo, Leno listed his possible future career as “retired millionaire.”
• Matt Lauer - The popular "Today" show anchor revealed his secret to success as a broadcast journalist, who often has to ask tough questions, in the quote he selected by English writer William Hazlitt that ran under his official 1975 Greenwich High School (Connecticut) yearbook photo, "He will never make true friends who is afraid of making enemies.”

The pop culture juggernaut known as Betty White is continuing her unstoppable tour de force of the entertainment world with an appearance on Bravo's 'Inside The Actors Studio.' You won't get any overexposure complaints from us!

According to Access Hollywood, White will sit down with host James Lipton to divulge her acting secrets for the Bravo series.

The episode is expected to air this fall, probably around the time White's new film, 'You Again,' which also stars Kristen Bell and Sigourney Weaver, hits theaters Sept. 24.

Of course "SNL" is a show with a lot of cast turnover, but it seems the show is losing it's best cast members rather quickly. Sunday night's Emmy Awards were full of unforgettable moments and thrilling first-time wins for the casts and brilliant minds behind "Modern Family," "Breaking Bad" and "Glee."

But because there's no Emmy Award for the Emmy broadcast itself, MTV News decided to sprinkle a bit more Hollywood pixie dust on Sunday night's winners and losers with our own nods to the show highlights.

Instant Viral-Video Hit: Host Jimmy Fallon didn't knock it out of the park, but his opening musical tribute to "Glee," set to the tune of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run," became an overnight viral hit.

Social-Networking Fail: Fallon promised to take the Emmys into the future with some Twitter bits, but his introductions of presenters courtesy of viewer tweets fell flat nearly every time.

Best Name That Totally Sounds Like It Was Made Up: Bucky Gunts. We were totally with comedian Ricky Gervais when he said he hoped the director of the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics with the vaguely porn-y sounding name would win his category.

Worst Use of a Prop: Gervais provided many moments of hilarity during his time onstage (go back and listen to the Mel Gibson bit), but perhaps the night's most awkward moment came after his rant about how, unlike at the Golden Globes, there's no booze at the Emmys. He rectified that situation by sending waiters out into the audience with a variety of microbrews for the attendees. Things got a bit weird, though, when former "Friends" star Matthew Perry, who has spent time in rehab, had to politely decline a bottle of suds.

Think It, But Don't Say It Award: Definitely goes to three-time Emmy winner Edie Falco for joking after she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in "Nurse Betty": "I'm not funny." Guess who else doesn't think you are? All of the other women in the category.

Best Unexpected Cameo by the Subject of a TV Movie You'd Never Heard Of: Admit it, you got a bit misty when the spunky inspiration and namesake for "Temple Grandin" stood up during David Strathairn's acceptance speech and showed off her lady rancher outfit and later took the stage with her Hollywood doppelgänger, Emmy winner Claire Danes. Author and ethical-ranching promoter Grandin was the big winner of the night, with the HBO film about the autistic cowgirl's life taking home five awards and Grandin garnering tons of headlines on Monday morning (August 30).

Win by a Show You Should Start Watching Now!: If you missed the boat on the first three seasons of AMC's "Breaking Bad," maybe the wins by cancer-stricken, chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-cooker Bryan Cranston (his third) and former-junkie, lab-partner Aaron Paul will convince you to tune in. Seriously: one of the best shows on TV.

Enough Already Award: OK, we get it. Betty White is a hilarious senior citizen!

Kicking While Down Award: As much as we love "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," did it really deserve to win a seventh time over Conan O'Brien's short-lived stint on "The Tonight Show"? Even if it was as a sympathy vote, O'Brien earned the nod for his perseverance alone and the classy way he handled the fallout. Plus, he brought his masturbating bear to the crown jewel of late night! That should count for something.

OK, That Didn't Work Award: Jimmy Fallon rules at coming up with funny musical bits, but his roving, guitar-strumming intros to the various award categories kind of fell flat and got old ... real fast.

Can Someone Please Get This Man His Own Show? Award: "Daily Show" contributor and author John Hodgman's deadpan, near-whispered cross talk as winners walked to the stage was one of the show's home-run genre tweakers. You know you're doing it right when you don't care whether the announcer is telling the truth because his delivery is just that funny. One of our favorites: "As ['The Big Bang Theory' winner] Jim Parsons walks to the stage now, nerds across America are taking to the streets in joy, setting cars on fire, and then backing away, using their inhalers."

Product-Placement Award: Nothing was more brazen than the cast of (Emmy network) NBC's "Community" shilling for their own show, the Emmy broadcast and Infiniti cars during an ad for the new QX56. I like to call it the product-placement Triple Lindy. Then again, the spot for Jimmy Dean pork sausage products after the In Memoriam segment, featuring a tribute to late actor/ pork entrepreneur Jimmy Dean, was also pretty brazen.

Emmy had a split personality this year. Television's annual awards show honored hot new broadcast comedies "Modern Family" and "Glee," while sticking with more familiar favorites from cable in drama.

Lucky for "Mad Men" fanatics, the show's famed female cast of January Jones, Christina Hendricks, and Elisabeth Moss sported dreamy frocks on not one, but two channels last night.

Before season 4's sixth episode hit the AMC airwaves, the three actresses stepped out in elegant and modern style at the Emmy Awards -- Jones in bright blue Versace, Hendricks in bosom-baring lilac Zac Posen, and Moss in artfully draped nude Donna Karan. (Read StyleList's full recap of the night's fashions.)

After the lovely ladies and their talented co-stars nabbed a much deserved award for Best Dramatic Series -- for the third season in a row -- as well as Best Writing, viewers got to double their fun by traveling back to 1965 with the latest episode of "Mad Men," which also didn't disappoint on the fashion front.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the show was set around Sterling Cooper Draper Price being nominated for a Clio advertising award, which the team ends up winning.

Per usual, office manager Joan Harris (played by Hendricks) smolders as she accompanies the boys to the awards ceremony wearing a bright red dress with a delicately pleated scoop neck and watercolor floral pattern. In addition to her dress, her perfectly matched coral lips also make our hearts skip a little.

Another exciting moment occurs when copywriter Peggy Olson (Moss) strips off her conservative navy and mustard dress and shows her somewhat cumbersome white brassiere and matching slip in response to a challenge posed by the company's new art director. On a more buttoned-up note, the episode closed out with Betty Draper (a role that earned Jones an Emmy nomination) wearing her signature pastels, sporting a yellow and gray Chanel-like tweed skirt suit with big buttons and exaggerated lapels that we could totally see Anna Wintour rocking in 2010!

First-time winners dominated the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Sunday Night.

The show kicked off with host Jimmy Fallon leading a Glee-ish song and dance number set to Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run and including several of the night's nominees, including Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Betty White and even a randomly placed Kate Gosselin who parodied herself in one of her Dancing With The Stars costumes.

There were several hilarious bits from last night's Emmys. One was the opening, which apparently came from the brain of Jimmy Fallon. Sidenote: He did a better job hosting than I expected. I hope he gets asked back, because he did a decent job and he deserves a lot of credit for [...]

The Emmys started out with a bang yesterday, in a completely Glee-full number -- Springsteen's "Born to Run" -- that featured several nominees and stars, including Betty White, Jon Hamm, Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Tina Fey -- and Kate Gosselin.

A few priceless moments: Betty White telling Jon Hamm to "back that mother up!" And Jane Lynch slushy-ing both host Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey.

The Glee skit was the first of many surprises during the 62nd annual Emmy Awards, which were, intriguingly, dominated by first-time winners yesterday.

The biggest of the bunch was Modern Family, which scored three trophies -- best writing, best comedy series, and best supporting actor in a comedy with Eric Stonestreet's turn as Cameron Tucker. But the most coveted trophy the show took was George Clooney, there to accept a humanitarian award, who gamely participated in a Modern Family skit that saw him sandwiched between winner Stonestreet and on-screen love Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Always a scene-stealer, that Clooney.

And Breaking Bad scored two biggies, Aaron Paul winning for best supporting actor in a drama, while Bryan Cranston won best actor in a drama, beating out Jon Hamm, Michael C. Hall, and Hugh Laurie in a very tough category.

No shockers here: Mad Men took best drama series for the third year in a row, although its stars were once again locked out in the acting category. The Closer's Kyra Sedgwick took best actress in a drama, while Edie Falco won for Nurse Betty in the comedy category. 

And before I get to Glee, I gotta give a shout out to The Good Wife star Archie Panjabi, who stole the best supporting actress in a drama category in a surprise win. Brown girls represent!

After earning a whopping 19 nods, Glee only took four awards. Amongst them, no shocker here, was Neil Patrick Harris as best guest for his turn as Bryan Ryan, Mr. Schue's arch rival song-and-dance man.

Glee's big winners for the night -- and rightfully so -- were creator Ryan Murphy and Jane Lynch, who rocks it as the sometimes-sinister Sue Sylvester. And the newlywed Lynch looked absolutely fabulous in her gorgeous deep purple Ali Rahimi gown as she accepted. ''I want to thank my parents on the South Side of Chicago for raising us to the sounds of musical theater and being so unintentionally hilarious,'' Lynch said during her acceptance speech, before adding: ''I want to thank my Lord and creator, Ryan Murphy, for creating this role of a lifetime!'' She also, of course, thanked her new bride.

Another big winner was Betty White, who took best guest actress on a comedy series for her much-lauded gig hosting Saturday Night Live. The Emmy tops a renaissance year for the former Golden Girl, who, at 88, is having the kind of career upswing many a young starlet might envy. 

The biggest downer of the night? Alas, the academy was not with Coco. Conan O'Brien, nominated for outstanding variety, music, or comedy series, was beat out by stalwart Jon Stewart, who has won that title eight times now. No worries, Conan, you'll show 'em next year!

When it comes to writing about the annual primetime Emmy awards, it's hard to know where to start.  Do I start with the awards and how some very worthy performances were rewarded, even though so many more were overlooked in favor of "paint-by-numbers voting?"  Or do I start with the snooze-worthiness of the show itself?

Hmmm.  What to do?

All right, let's start with the awards themselves.  First the good news.  The marvelous Jane Lynch was rewarded for her hysterically evil high school coach, Sue Sylvester on Glee.   It's very cool that someone who's worked in the business for years finally gets a juicy role and runs with it. 

Newcomer Archie Punjabi took home the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her spicy role as a law firm private eye with a mysterious past on The Good Wife. 

Kyra Sedgewick, after multiple nominations, finally won Best Actress in a Drama for The Closer.  

And though I love Glee's Matthew Morrison to death, I couldn't argue too much with Jim Parsons of  The Big Bang Theory beating him out for Best Actor in a Comedy.  Except Jim Parsons doesn't have to sing and dance on a weekly basis.

Now let's talk about some head-scratching awards.  I love Edie Falco and think she's just great  in Nurse Jackie, but Best Actress in a Comedy? She said herself when she accepted the award, "I'm not funny!"  Lea Michele of Glee should have had that one.

And granted the Best Actor in a Drama category was a tough one, and I love Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad, but three years in a row!?  While Matthew Fox of Lost goes home empty-handed?  While Michael C. Hall battled cancer and turned in the best season of Dexter to date?  While Hugh Laurie of House still has no Emmy?  While Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights and Jon Hamm of Mad Men were also so very, very worthy? 

Paint-by-numbers voting, people. 

Speaking of Mad Men, it won for Best Drama, and while I won't argue with that too much, a memo to the academy voters:  Just because you don't understand a show (Lost) or think it's beneath you (True Blood) doesn't mean it's not deserving of the Best Drama award.

The snubbing of Lost especially stung, since the show was so entertaining and such a ground-breaker when it came to storytelling.  But one bright note, Lost won for Best Editing at last week's Creative Emmys for the finale, The End.  Congratulations to editors Stephen Semel, Mark J. Goldman, Christopher Nelson, and Henk Van Eeghen.

HBO's Temple Grandin  about an autistic woman who grows up to become a noted educator and speaker swept the Best TV Movie awards with Best Actress (Claire Danes), Best Supporting Actress (Julia Ormond), Best Supporting Actor (David Strathairn) and Best TV Movie of the year.  Grandin was in the audience, and it was very satisfying to see her come up on stage with the winning producers.

So now let's talk about the Emmy show.  Ah, man!  Where to start?  Well let's start with the host, Jimmy Fallon.   I know a lot of people think he's the funniest thing since sliced bread, but I'm not one of them. 

The opening number, Born to Run with the Glee kids, Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, Jorge Garcia and Jane Lynch was a great idea.  The problem was, the audio dubbing was so funky you couldn't hear the lyrics of the song, so most of the jokes were lost.  The best part was when they all ran on stage live and grooved to the beat while Jimmy hammed it up with some help from Randy Jackson of American Idol.

The next best idea and funniest bit was Jimmy's musical send-off to three shows that ended this year.  First he paid tribute to 24 as Elton John singing a variation on Candle in the Wind.  Next it was a farewell to Law and Order courtesy of Boyz to Men's, Say Goodbye to Yesterday.  And finally it was a salute to Lost via Green Day's The Time of Your Life.   The best lyrics from that one:  "The island it was mystical, and in the end they died.  I didn't understand it, but I tried."

The Parade of Dead People was quite moving this year, accompanied by a live song from Jewel.  The only person I didn't know was gone, Caroline McWilliams from Benson died just this week.

The best presenting team were Jon Hamm and Betty White.  In fact, how good a sport is Jon Hamm?  He does the opening musical number and throws himself into it, funky gyrations and all.  Nice to see a handsome and talented actor who doesn't take himself too seriously.

Worst hair award of the evening was a tough call between January Jones and Julia Ormond.  I'd have to give the edge to Ormond.  Not only did she look like she just woke up from a rough night's sleep, but she must have gotten the alcoholic version of that non-alcoholic beer Ricky Gervais sent out earlier in the evening.

In her thank you speech, she said she told her mother she was "eminated for a nommy."  Heh.  Then she thanked HBO for having the courage to do what she called "a chick flick with bull's balls."

And far be it for me to razz the ladies who won for producing Temple Grandin, but man, a couple were wearing strapless dresses and in their excitement, the rating for the Emmy show nearly went to "R" as their assets barely contained their excitement -- if you know what I mean.

Giving the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award to George Clooney was inspired because he's easy on the eyes and adds a level or class and  humor wherever he goes.  But other than that, the show was kind of weak when it came to star power.  The presenters were primarily middle-of-the-road stars or people NBC wanted to plug.  Ultimately, there just wasn't much pizzazz.

And you just know every time a show won that wasn't on a broadcast network, NBC was watching the clock like hawks during the thank you speeches.  They rudely cut off Matthew Weiner of Mad Men while he was accepting his writing award.  He finished the speech, however, when the show won for Best Drama.  The only one they didn't cut off, but maybe should have, was Al Pacino when he won for HBO's You Don't Know Jack.

Al hasn't aged well, and I think he took a couple of swigs from Julia Ormond's beer bottle.

Because it was Sunday, last night the Emmys were competing with new episodes of Mad Men and True Blood.  Each show took note of that in their own special ways.  The Mad Men episode was all about Don Draper being up for a prestigious Clio award for one of his ad campaigns. 

While True Blood prefaced their episode with their own True Blood In Memorian video, saluting those who've died during the run of the series.  Very. Funny.

Shorter than the Oscars and gayer than the Tonys – it’s the 62nd annual Emmy Awards! This year starring Betty White and Temple Grandin.

For the first time ever the Emmys were shown live in Los Angeles. NBC recognized they were up against very stiff competition this year -- the Chabad Telethon.

What an inconvenience that three-hour tape delay used to be. Every year my wife would have to excuse herself in the middle of the show, call home, and say, “Daddy lost. Go to bed.”

Jimmy Fallon was this year’s host. He was amusing at times. But my choice would have been Joel McHale. Or Rabbi Boruch Schlomo Cunin who killed at the Chabad telethon!

The opening production number was great fun. And they established right away, if you need a laugh – go to Betty White. She was in skits, promos, film clips. I was surprised she didn’t appear in a scene from THE PACIFIC blasting the shit out of the Japs. But Betty coaching Jon Hamm on dance moves was hilarious, and in general the number got the show off to a spirited start.

NBC is now so afraid of defecting viewers that during winners’ speeches they alert you to upcoming star appearances. How’d you like to be on stage, maybe celebrating the single greatest moment of your life and on the screen they flash: “In Memoriam in 4 1/2 minutes”?

Lots of surprises this year: Aaron Paul won for BREAKING BAD. He starred in one of our failed pilots a couple of years ago and I just knew if he ever got attached to decent material his career would take off!

A big shocker was Archie Panjabi from THE GOOD WIFE. She's the researcher. So she won an Emmy for, “I was able to retrieve his phone records for the last three years”?

More surprises: Kyra Sedgwick, TOP CHEF beating perennial winner THE AMAZING RACE (they shouldn’t have cut corners by having the teams race through “It’s a Small World” this season), the scarcity of Conan jokes (the over/under was fifty), and the discovery that Julia Osmond is certifiably insane.

Otherwise, was anybody shocked that Kim Kardashian can’t sing or that THE PACIFIC won for Best Mini-Series? It was the only nominee and she has no talent at all.

What was with that set? Every time they went to a tribute to Comedy or Drama or whatever it was like the Caesar’s Palace Sports Book exploded.

I was thrilled that MODERN FAMILY copped Best Comedy, thus keeping the tradition of comedic excellence alive for ABC. First TAXI in 1978, then THE WONDER YEARS in 1988 and now this.

MAD MEN again deserved Best Drama. It’s still the best show on television. Although a note to Matthew Weiner – when you win for writing, it’s usually good form to wait for your co-writer to join you and not trample her on your way to the stage.

This was a bittersweet night for Matt. Yes, he won two Emmys but Temple Grandin got more attention.

Jane Lynch was even more of a lock than THE PACIFIC. And she looked fabulous. She could even get girl parts.

But what was with Lauren Graham? Did she leave a napkin in her dress? It looked like she was wearing a black gown and a white lobster bib.

Eric Stonestreet’s acceptance speech was heartfelt and lovely. And it was his first time. Al Pacino’s won a million awards and his speech was like your uncle Lou’s just before the paramedics came.

It was clearly MODERN FAMILY’S night. Congratulations to Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd for best script. Great speech by Steve but where was Chris? Was there a Clippers game last night?

How could they do a tribute to the year in Drama and not include DEFYING GRAVITY? Or a Comedy tribute and omit HANK?

Edie Falco may be the only actress to win a Best Comedy and a Best Drama Emmy. Gotta applaud her honesty. “I’m not funny!” she exclaimed. Neither was that running Twitter bit.

January Jones wore a giant blue drink umbrella. Why have her present the award for Best Mini-Series when she can’t even pronounce Mini-Series?

You realize of course that you watch a lot more television than the people who made these decisions? If it weren't for screener DVD's, many Academy members would still be voting for HILL STREET BLUES.

It’s about time that Jim Parsons won for BIG BANG THEORY. He’s the young David Hyde-Pierce.

Did you notice that not one winner all night, any category, thanked a network or studio for notes?

Sofia Vergara came dressed as an Emmy.

Equally as stunning was Clair Danes – and she did it without cleavage.

Meanwhile, Lea Michele was quite fetching in her tailored Glad bag.

Hugh Laurie will never win. And Bryan Cranston will never lose.

George Clooney received the Bob Hope Award for Major Movie Star who agreed to appear on the Emmys.

Best line of the night: Writer Adam Mazer, winner for YOU DON’T KNOW JACK: "Jack Kevorkian, I'm so grateful you're my friend. But I'm even more grateful you're not my physician."

Jack Kevorkian was in attendance although at first I thought it was David Caruso.

Anna Pacquin came as King Tut.

What was that hideous song Jewel sang? I hate to say it but it really brought down the “In Memoriam” section.

DEXTER’S John Lithgow, winner of best guest actor in a drama series (even though he was in 13 of 13 episodes) thanked HBO, which is gracious except DEXTER is on Showtime.

Did anybody else notice that host network NBC didn’t win a single Emmy during the broadcast? Again, how does Jeff Zucker keep his job???

Most deserved Emmy: Jeff Greenberg for casting MODERN FAMILY.

The musical salute to 24/LAW & ORDER/LOST was good but I dunno, over at the Chabad telethon Avraham Fried was kicking ass.

Why did they have to ruin director Mick Jackson’s big night by mentioning he also directed VOLCANO?

As Emmy shows go I thought this was a pretty good one. It was nice balance of new blood and Betty White. Thanks to my daughter Annie for helping with the snark. Happy birthday, kiddo.

I can’t let an Emmy review go by without a nod to KTLA’s inane Red Carpet arrival show hosted by the “footstool of the footlights”, Sam Rubin and his bimbo de jour, this year – Jessica Holmes, whose qualifications for this assignment was helicopter traffic reporter.

When Paula Abdul told Sam that Simon Cowell will always be in her heart, he’s like a fungus, Sam sought clarification: “So (he’s) like toe jam?” What does it say when Sam Rubin is in a conversation with Paula Abdul and she comes off the smart one?

Not that Jessica is a Mensa candidate. To Jesse Brandt of BREAKING BAD she asked: “So does everybody in Hollywood know each other?” I guess when you cover the industry from 20,000 feet you might think that.

In discussing DEXTER with two of its cast members, she said, “It’s so funny that he’s a serial killer.”

And just when you thought they couldn’t be any more self-congratulatory they add this new little wrinkle: a running crawl at the bottom of the screen with text messages from the audience repeatedly telling Jessica and Sam how beautiful they look. I sent a text: “Sam & Jessica are insipid” and KTLA didn’t air it. But with just a $30 donation, the Chabad telethon did.
