A look at the 12 people to be inducted June 12, 2011 into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum:
MIKE TYSON — Born Michael Gerald Tyson on June 30, 1966, in Brooklyn, N.Y. A standout amateur, Tyson was 1984 National Golden Gloves champion. Following a controversial loss to Henry Tillman at the 1984 Olympic trials, he turned pro in 1985. Behind his trademark peek-a-boo defense, quick hand speed and swarming combination punching, Tyson scored 19 straight knockouts. After going the 10-round limit in consecutive fights with James "Quick" Tillis and Mitch Green, Tyson had six more knockouts in a row before stopping WBC champion Trevor Berbick in the second round in 1986 to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history at age 20. He added the WBA title with a 12-round decision over James Smith in 1987 and unified the titles later in the year with a 12-round victory over IBF champion Tony Tucker. Tyson defended the unified titles six times in victories over Larry Holmes, Tony Tubbs, Frank Bruno and Carl Williams, then stopped Michael Spinks in 91 seconds to earn universal recognition as champion in 1988. Two years later, Tyson lost the title to James "Buster" Douglas, then rebounded with four wins, two against Donovan "Razor" Ruddock. A proposed title fight in 1991 with Evander Holyfield was postponed because of a rib injury. Tyson reclaimed the WBC and WBA titles in 1996 by knocking out Bruno in three rounds and Bruce Seldon in the first round. That same year he lost the WBA belt to Holyfield in 11 rounds and was disqualified in the 1997 rematch after biting both of Holyfield's ears. From 1999-2001 Tyson fought six times, beating Frans Botha in five rounds, Lou Savarese in one, and Brian Nielsen in seven. In 2002, Tyson suffered an eighth-round knockout in an unsuccessful title bid against Lennox Lewis and retired in 2005 with a 50-6-2 record with 44 knockouts.
JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ — Born July 12, 1962 in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico. Turned pro in 1980 after a 13-bout amateur career. Undefeated after 43 fights, he scored an eighth-round knockout of Mario Martinez to win the 1984 WBC super featherweight title. He made nine successive defenses before beating Edwin Rosario for the WBA lightweight title in 1987. He added the WBC title with a win over Jose Luis Ramirez in 1988 and became a three-division world champion when he won the WBC junior welterweight crown from Roger Mayweather in 1989. His impressive string of 12 title defenses included wins over Hector Camacho, and Greg Haugen in front of a record crowd of 132,274, and in 1990 Chavez stopped IBF titleholder Meldrick Taylor with 2 seconds left in the fight to unify titles. Chavez moved up in weight and drew with WBC welterweight champ Pernell Whitaker in a 1993 title bout. After compiling an 89-0-1 record, Chavez lost the WBC junior welterweight title to Frankie Randall in 1994, then reclaimed the title in a rematch and reigned until getting knocked out in four rounds by Oscar De La Hoya in 1996. Chavez challenged for world titles three more times and lost each time before retiring in 2005 with a professional record of 107-6-2 with 88 knockouts.
KOSTYA TSZYU — Born Konstantin Borisovich Tszyu on Sept. 19, 1969, in Serov, Russia. A decorated amateur, Tszyu compiled a 259-11 record and won three European championships, took gold at the 1990 Goodwill Games, represented Russia at the 1988 Summer Olympics and beat Vernon Forrest to win the 1991 light welterweight World Amateur Championship in Australia. Moved to Australia in 1992 and turned pro, defeating Juan LaPorte in his fourth bout and Livingstone Bramble in his 10th pro fight. Tszyu defeated Jake Rodriguez for the IBF junior welterweight title in 1995 and defended the title five times, including victories over Roger Mayweather and Hugo Pineda before being upset in a 10th-round knockout by Vince Phillips in 1997. In 1998, Tszyu beat Diosbelys Hurtado for the interim WBC junior welterweight title and stopped Miguel Angel Gonzalez in 1999 to capture the WBC title outright. Tszyu consolidated titles by defeating WBA champ Sharmba Mitchell and scoring a second-round knockout of IBF champ Zab Judah in 2001. He made successful defenses against Ben Tackie and Jesse James Leija before a series of injuries led the WBC and WBA to strip him of the titles. Tszyu returned to knock out Mitchell in three rounds before losing the IBF title to Ricky Hatton in 2005 in his final fight. He finished with a pro record of 31-2-1 with 25 knockouts.
MEMPHIS PAL MOORE — Born Thomas Wilson Moore on July 28, 1894 in Memphis, Tenn. Began his professional career in 1913 and although he never became a champion, he distinguished himself as one of the top bantamweights of his era, regularly defeating champions of the time in no-decision or over-the-weight bouts. Moore fought more than a dozen boxers who became world champions, including Hall of Famers Kid Williams, Pete Herman, Joe Lynch, Jimmy Wilde and Frankie Genaro. Moore had several multi-fight rivalries, including 10 bouts with Lynch, seven with Jackie Sharkey and five with Carl Tremaine. Moore retired in 1930 after more than 200 pro fights. He died in 1953.
JACK ROOT — Born Janos Ruthaly on May 26, 1876, in the Czech Republic. Turned professional in Chicago in 1897 and posted more than 40 wins before losing to George Gardner on a knockout in the 17th round of a 1902 bout. He then registered two more wins, including a six-round triumph over Marvin Hart, before vying for the newly created light heavyweight title created by his manager, Lou Houseman. Root became the division's first champion with a 1903 win over Kid McCoy. He dropped the title to Gardner in his first defense and was stopped by Hart in 12 rounds in 1905 for the vacant heavyweight title. Root retired with a record of 47-3-3 with 28 knockouts.
DAVE SHADE — Born March 1, 1902, in Vallejo, Calif. Turned pro in 1918 and engaged in dozens of four-round bouts before receiving high praise after a knockdown of welterweight champ Jack Britton in 1921. Overshadowed early in his career by his older brothers, Shade eventually became a star. He met Mickey Walker twice in 1921, losing in the eighth round when he broke an arm and in a 12-round no-decision, and drew with Britton in a welterweight title bid the next year. In 1925, Shade, at 153 pounds, shocked the boxing world when he stopped future light heavyweight champion Jimmy Slattery in three rounds. Shade met Walker for the welterweight title later that year, losing a controversial 15-round decision. Shade eventually moved up to middleweight and defeated Ace Hudkins, Ben Jeby, and Al Gainer. Shade retired in 1935 with a record of 124-23-46 with 14 knockouts and 26 no-decisions. He died in 1983.
JOHN GULLY — Born Aug. 21, 1783 in Wick-on-Anson, England. Following his father's death, Gully took over the family butcher shop at age 13, amassed considerable debt, and was sent to debtors prison at age 21. Heavyweight champion Henry Pearce, a boyhood friend, visited him in prison and they staged a boxing exhibition for the inmates. Gully got the better of Pearce and wealthy sportsmen paid his debt so he could pursue a boxing career. Gully met Pearce for the title in London in 1805, but the experienced champion won in 64 rounds. When Pearce retired two years later, Gully was regarded as the champion and solidified his claim to the title with two wins over Bob Gregson — in 36 and 24 rounds. Gully retired after the second Gregson bout and became a successful pub owner, bookmaker and coal miner and was elected to Parliament in 1832, serving seven years. He died in 1863.
IGNACIO "NACHO" BERISTAIN — Mexico's trainer of champions, Beristain began his career working for the Mexican government and trained Mexico's boxing team at four Olympic Games. In the pro ranks, Beristain has trained 19 champions, including three Hall of Famers — strawweight and light flyweight Ricardo "Finito" Lopez, junior flyweight Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez, and bantamweight-super bantamweight Daniel Zaragoza.
A.F. BETTINSON — A former amateur lightweight champion of England, Bettinson became a promoter and with John Fleming in 1891 founded the National Sport Club (NSC), which hosted many of the top boxers of the day. Bouts took place after dinner and featured such standouts as Joe Walcott, Tommy Ryan, Jimmy Wilde, Ted "Kid" Lewis, Georges Carpentier, and Kid McCoy. Bettinson had strict rules. Boxers had to behave and members and guests were not permitted to talk during the action. The influence of the NCS was profound. In 1909 it standardized divisions and weight limits before authorizing British title bouts and arranged for the presentation of championship belts.
JOE CORTEZ — Born Oct. 13, 1943 in New York City, he registered a 43-2 record as an amateur boxer, winning six Golden Gloves tournaments. He turned pro in 1963 and compiled an 18-1 record before retiring in 1971. Five years later, he began refereeing amateur bouts and soon turned pro, officiating his first world title bout in 1982, WBA junior welterweight champion Aaron Pryor's 12th-round knockout of Miguel Montilla. He has since become one of the most respected referees in boxing, calling 160 title bouts. He's also appeared as a referee in two movies.
HARRY CARPENTER — The voice of British Broadcasting Corp. boxing for over 40 years, Carpenter covered his first bout for the BBC in 1949 and became its full-time boxing correspondent in 1962. He called ringside action around the world until his retirement in 1994, including the "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman and the "Thrilla in Manila" between Ali and Joe Frazier. Prior to working for the BBC, Carpenter was on the staff of the London Daily Mail for eight years as a boxing and general sports columnist and also covered three Olympic Games. He died in March 2010 at age 84.
SYLVESTER STALLONE — Born in New York City on July 6, 1946. Became an actor and screenwriter and penned the script about an underdog boxer from Philadelphia named Rocky Balboa. The movie "Rocky" was released in 1976 and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning for best picture, best director and best film editing. Stallone was nominated for best writing and best actor in a leading role. Stallone also wrote five other movies based on the Rocky Balboa character and in 2006 was awarded the Boxing Writers Association of America award for "Lifetime Cinematic Achievement in Boxing." He also hosted and produced the boxing reality series "The Contender."

Last fall, we published the 10 Best Lunches Under $10 in Union Square. It was so popular, we figured why not do every neighborhood? So we asked Eater editor and 7x7 contributor Carolyn Alburger to give us her 10 favorite dishes under $10 found in her home turf, the Haight-Ashbury. Check out our other 10 under $10 features while you're at it.
In the Haight-Ashbury, it's much easier to score weed than a good bite to eat. Here, perfectly dingy, storied watering holes, tie-dye t-shirts, tattoo parlors and tourist-magnet Ben & Jerry's run the show. If you're hungry, here's where to go.
1. Giovanni's Pizza at Club Deluxe
Club Deluxe has delicious cocktails with fresh-squeezed juice, but they also have a sort-of-secret Neapolitan pizza maker hidden in the kitchen. When Giovanni and his mom are working, they'll approach your table to see if you're hungry. If you are, I suggest the Cippolina with mozzarella, prosciutto, caramelized onion, parmigiano, basil, roasted garlic and a drizzle of olive oil. Stick around until 9 p.m. and you'll get a side of live jazz on most nights. 1511 Haight St., 415-552-69492. Hot and sour soup at Citrus Club
It's not the most authentic bite in town, but Citrus Club keeps delivering on its fun Southeast Asia-meets-hippie vibe, quick service and affordable renditions of Thai and Vietnamese favorites. For a healthy weeknight meal, I get the hot and sour soup with shrimp. If I'm feeling frisky, it's spicy lime and coconut noodles. My flatmate thinks Citrus Club serves one of the best peanut sauces in the city with the spring rolls. And it's really all about the sauce anyway, isn't it? 1790 Haight St, 415-387-6366.3. The North Beach at Cole Valley Cafe
A welcome discovery just a block off Haight Street, Cole Valley Cafe has a friendly staff and above average made-to-order sandwiches for a coffee shop. The North Beach vegetarian sandwich has portabello mushrooms, feta, sun-dried tomatos, onions and spinach. I cheat and add turkey. Or get the new salmon avocado sandwich with capers and red onions on foccacia from Metropolis bakery. 701 Cole St., 415-668-5282.4. Mofongo at Parada 22
One of the only Puerto Rican restaurants in the Bay Area happens to be in —of all places— the Haight. After it was open a few months, so many people were asking for traditional mofongo, they had to add it to the menu. Their rendition with green plantains, garlic, shrimp and soffrito is pretty delicious for a Puerto Rican restaurant in the Haight. Full disclosure: it costs $11.50. 1805 Haight St, 415-750-1111.5. Locally-made prepared foods at Whole Foods Market on Stanyan
The prepared foods section on the left when you walk into the new Whole Foods is teeming with locally sourced goodness. There are colorful, raw delights from Lydia's Organics — they always make me consider becoming vegan for a few seconds — tamales from Donna's and Primavera and mini feasts from Hapa SF and Sukhi's. I tend to try something new every time, but a flaky, light Afghan bolani from East & West seems to be a perfect accompaniment to anything. 690 Stanyan St., 415-876-6740.6. Piggy Special at Pork Store Cafe
People always talk about their gravy-doused 49er and the egg dish they serve in a hash brown "nest," but I always go for the piggy special: 2 eggs with 2 pancakes and bacon. It satisfies my usual ADD brunch desires to have something salty, something sweet and something with bacon for a mere $8.50. 1451 Haight St., 415-864-6981.
7. Duck hearts at The Alembic
"Just do it," is usually what I have to tell my friends. The combination of jerk-spiced tender (yes! tender!) heart meat and sweet grilled pineapple is something I could eat daily. I've never seen anyone spit it out. 1725 Haight St., 415-666-0822.8. Deli at Haight Street Market
The Haight Street Market just expanded big-time into the old Massawa environs next door. Now there's a deli, bringing quirkily named affordable sandwiches and, my favorite, the "Wild West Pulled Pork" served with spicy coleslaw and BBQ sauce on a Dutch crunch roll. 1530 Haight St., 415-255-0644.9. Deconstructed Samosa from Curry Up Now at Off the Grid
The Haight is lucky to have an edition of the genius Off the Grid food truck gathering every Thursday. I usually go straight to Curry Up Now and grab the deconstruced samosa with paneer, chickpeans, spicy pico de gallo, pickled onions, cilantro and mint chutney. It has vibrant, fresh flavors we don't often get to taste in this neck of the woods. Stanyan and Waller Sts.10. Pepperoni Pizza from Escape from New York Pizza
As much as I hate to admit it, I've tried every quick slice joint on the block. In my humble opinion, Escape from New York has the best plain ol' pepperoni when the craving hits. 1737 Haight St., 415-668-5577. -

"Witches!"
This year's Halloween-y new releases, Paranormal Activity 2 and Saw 3D (the seventh entry in that undying series), may not be enough to satisfy your need for horror. Luckily, SFMOMA administers a double dose, starting with 1973's Season of the Witch, an early George Romero film, about a housewife who becomes enmeshed in witchcraft. The must-see, though, is 1977's Suspiria, in which an American ballet student travels to Germany to attend a new school where sinister goings-on are as common as pointe shoes. Directed by Dario Argento, the film is a Technicolor nightmare and an essential addition to the season. Read on for more Halloween movie revivals, including an additional Suspiria screening. "French Cinema Now"
A week before presenting a run of Olivier Assayas' 330-minute cine-event, Carlos, the San Francisco Film Society hosts its annual sampling of Gallic small wonders. "French Cinema Now" welcomes a few familiar faces (Isabelle Huppert in Copacabana, Catherine Deneuve in Hidden Diary, one of Guillaume Depardieu's last performances in A Real Life), along with auteur turns from Bertrand Tavernier (The Princess of Montpensier) and Alain Cavalier (Irène). Closing night brings Certified Copy, in which Abbas Kiarostami, like Hou Hsiao-hsien before him, calls upon Juliette Binoche for his French twist. If early reviews are any indication, the Iranian filmmaker remains intimately concerned with epistemology in spite of the change in scenery. (Max Goldberg)

"Performing Diaspora: Devendra Sharma"
During last year's Performing Diaspora, Devendra Sharma's Mission Suhani proved to be a major hit. Inspired by the tradition of arranged marriages dowries, it put a light-hearted twist on what has become a controversial though deeply embedded cultural practice. Mission charmed with the wit of its dramatization of this tale about greed, betrayal, and sweet revenge. It is performed by Nautanki Theater, a company of amateurs and professionals residing in Fresno. Nautanki is a North Indian folkloric style, half musical theater, half dance that has migrated to the Central Valley and, clearly, seems to be thriving within the local Indian community. Ray Parker Jr.
With an instantly recognizable tune and shout along opportunities galore ("Who ya gonna call?"), the "Ghostbusters" theme song likely brings back a flood of fun memories for anybody who grew up in the 1980s or is a fan of the hit movie and much-played music video. Written and performed by Ray Parker Jr., the tune has had a life of its own ever since it was unleashed on audiences more than 25 years ago. Spirits should be high at tonight's concert as Parker is sure to resurrect his biggest hit, just in time for Halloween. Bustin' makes me feel good! (Sean McCourt)

Acid King
I'm usually not a huge fan of weddings, but imagine this mythical union: L7 and Sleep joined in holy heavy matrimony, spitting out a bell-bottomed babe with a book titled Say You Love Satan in hand. Overlay this with indigo, fog, fuzz, a killer Hawkwind cover (the first song ever, it is said, to feature the word "parallelogram"), and dreamy female vocals dripping with distortion and demonic dew and doom. D-d-duhhh! This show is a no-brainer: formed back in 1993, Acid King is seminal SF stoner metal. Catch this rare local appearance on the heels of their Australian tour. C'mon, don't be a plain ol' square, be movin' like a parallelogram. (Kat Renz)

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago
Why Hubbard Street Dance Chicago? First, fabulous performances; second, it's a modern dance company that is not a one-choreographer deal; third, it boasts an international repertory we might never see otherwise (they were the first Twyla Tharp entrusted pieces to after she disbanded her own troupe). Further proof of reason No. 3: Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato just disbanded his own ensemble; Hubbard is bringing his baroque music box piece Arcangelo. When Dance Theater of the Netherlands visited last, it had been 22 years. Now Hubbard is bringing a Jirí Kylián work, 27'52". What's more, Hubbard promotes from within. "SF Sketchfest Presents: The Return of Tony Clifton"
When was the last time you saw a real zombie? Rumor has it that Tony Clifton is Andy Kaufman returned from the dead. (Hey, Jesus did it.) Just make sure you don't mention the late comedian to Clifton; he's notoriously touchy about the subject. In any case, Clifton is touring with his "Katrina Kiss-My-Ass Orchestra" as community service after being charged with disorderly conduct in New Orleans. Not only do proceeds benefit Comic Relief, but at each show one lucky ticket holder "will get to spend one night at Dennis Hof's Moonlight Bunny with Mr. Clifton paying for the hooker of the winner's choice." Everyone remembers Carol Anne ("They're heeeere!") and Tangina ("This house is clean!"), but Poltergeist diehards know the heart of the 1982 horror classic is JoBeth Williams' Diane Freeling, the kind of mother who'd crawl up a rope into purgatory to save her youngest child. (She also smokes weed and has a pretty awesome swimming-pool scene alongside several grinning corpses.) Clear your building-houses-over-graveyards-schedule; this Mark Huestis-produced event features an onstage interview with Williams, plus an array of entertainments, from a Carol Anne look-alike contest to a Poltergeist-inspired (creepy clowns? Your descent into weak-kneed terror begins at noon with John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing (highlight: blood-testing scene), and continues, in order, with Lucio Fulci's 1979 Zombie (zombie vs. shark underwater fight); 1988's The Vanishing (Dutch version, not Nancy Travis-starring remake); 1982's Pieces (chainsaw-sploitation); 1973's The Wicker Man (Nic Cage-free original); 1976 Spanish chiller Who Can Kill a Child?; in-a-row essentials Eraserhead (1977), Suspiria(1977), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), and The Evil Dead (1981); Miike Takashi's delightfully violent Audition (1999); and 1973 giallo Torso. Brain-scrambling awesomeness. (Eddy)

SUNDAY 31
"Matinees for Maniacs"
If you're not too hung over from all the booze, hard drugs, or candy corn you gobbled down the night before, come check out this double-dip of spooky Disney classics on Halloween afternoon. First up is Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), the Ray Bradbury-based tale of a demonic circus ringleader. (Haven't thought about it for years, but in hindsight, it maaaaay just have something to do with my irrational fear of the circus.) Next up is Escape to Witch Mountain(1975). Unfortunately, or actually, perhaps very fortunately, this original version doesn't star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or include a song by Miley Cyrus like the 2009 reboot does. (Landon Moblad)

MUSIC
Gary Numan
Gaining some initial recognition as the singer and leader of Tubeway Army with their single "Down In The Park," Gary Numan's success exploded with the release of his 1979 solo record The Pleasure Prinicipal, which featured the hit single "Cars." Inspiring untold New Wave, industrial, and goth bands with his sound and look over the ensuing years, Numan has been enjoying a resurgence of late, and has found himself on stage with groups such as Nine Inch Nails as a special guest. Tonight he'll be performing his debut album in its entirety; expect it to be delivered with an extra dose of seasoned edginess when this icon hits the stage. (McCourt)

Staying on a hotel's club floor usually means free food and access to a private bar. The Ritz Carlton sets a higher standard. Most properties have lush club floors with dedicated concierges and workstations with computers, printers, and fax machines. The San Francisco club level has a business center with meeting rooms so you can play host on the road. At the Ritz on Central Park West in New York City, guests can have a butler unpack and pack their luggage. Such added amenities cost about $100 a night. Website: http://www.ritzcarlton.com
A must-have for long-haul flights, this PoshAir Premium Cashmere JetElite sleeping bag has a cashmere exterior and an interior lined with 300-thread count Egyptian cotton. It has an interior pocket for safely stowing valuables as you snooze and comes with a tote bag. Available in brown, beige, black, navy blue, camel, and pink. Such luxury will cost you $699 for an extra large sleeping bag that is 3-feet wide and can accommodate a person up to 6'4" tall. Website: http://poshair.com
Reminiscent of the days when "clubs" served as a home away from home for businessmen, Truefitt & Hill's original London location, which opened in 1805, boasts Charles Dickens and Winston Churchill as past clients. Today, customers have tea and biscuits along with their shoeshines ($6) and hot-lather shaves ($65) to rejuvenate after a long flight or a day of back-to-back meetings. You can find a Truefitt & Hill in Chicago, London, and Toronto. Website: http://www.truefittandhill.co.uk
When you really want to pamper yourself (and you've got some money to burn), check out ShareAJet Exchange, a website that helps connect travelers looking to fly in luxury at a discount. Travelers post flight requests on the site or browse listings to find a match. Each flight accommodates a maximum of two parties, and the price is split evenly regardless of the breakdown of the groups. A recent listing advertised a one-way trip from Washington, D.C., to Rome on a 12-seat Gulfstream with room for 10 extra passengers for $60,000 per party, half the cost of flying privately. Special Focus Facilities: The Worst Nursing Homes Of All

I get a large number of questions from nursing home patients and families regarding focused on finding the 'best' facilities available. For some reason, I get an even larger number of people who ask me who the 'worst' facilities are. Maybe there's some sport associated with identifying these facilities? But for to today, let's feed the need to identify the poor performing nursing homes-- the Special Focus Facilities.
If you are a nursing home operator or employee the Special Focus Facility (SFF) is definitely a club you want no part of. Rather, the SFF was created by The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) as an assemblage of facilities that deserve special recognition for the inadequate care they typically provide to their patients.
A facility typically earns a spot on this list primarily after the both federal and state inspectors survey reports on the facility come to light. SFF typically have:
- More general problems than your average facility
- More safety and injury-related problems than your typical facility
- A pattern of serious problems that have persisted over a long period of time
No doubt, event the best facilities have episodes where the care they provide can be characterizes as abusive or neglectful. However, these SFF have more than their share and at the very least patients and families should be aware if they have a loved one who is a patient at a facility on this dubious list.
Below is a compilation of all nursing homes currently on the SFF list organized by state.
Here are some observations from the SFF list:

ABOUT US
Lucille Roberts Health Clubs began 35 years ago in New York City, with the creation of a single club dedicated to helping women look and feel better, both physically and emotionally. Being a woman, Lucille knew that losing weight was the real reason women put on their sweats and came in to work out. With that in mind, she single-handedly pioneered the concept of "women's-only" fitness centers.
At Lucille Roberts, we take pride in our ability to serve our members in a timely, professional manner and provide a high quality fitness experience at a reasonable price. We strive for opportunities to develop our relationships with our customers and to pursue long term growth and prosperity. We care for our co-workers and consider them all part of the Roberts' family. We value creativity, productivity and loyalty, and encourage independent thinking.

Here's to a rare thing: a genuine popular festival with no commercial strings attached
Not so long ago, when London taxi drivers still frowned at Scottish banknotes, haggis wasn't an easy food to find much farther south than Tyneside, and for most of the year this largely unregretted scarcity still prevails. Apart, that is, from the month of January, when over the past decade or so increasing numbers of the pale obese sausage – a sausage in need of a gym – have begun to appear in the windows of London butchers' shops as a reminder that the birth anniversary of Robert Burns is just around the corner. As a fresh retail opportunity, the Burns Supper is hardly up there with Halloween; 25 January is too close to Christmas and apart from haggis, and assuming there's left-over whisky in the cupboard, what's to be bought other than a turnip? The Burns Supper in England may be a rare example of a festival that has grown in popularity without the push of commerce.
They can be ghastly occasions. Helen Simpson brilliantly catches the atmosphere of too many of them in her story, Burns and the Bankers. A great crowd of kilted men and their unhappy wives gathers in the ballroom of a Park Lane hotel, where the Federation of Caledonian Bankers is to celebrate the bard. The haggis is addressed ("on and on it went, incomprehensible … and smug and ridiculous"), the Immortal Memory proposed, the Lassies toasted ("Oh what windbags the Scots are, thought Nicola … what blowhard old windbags they really are"). And the men drink too much whisky and get ever more pleased with themselves.
As a junior reporter on a Lanarkshire newspaper, I knew one or two evenings like that: the Cambuslang golf club in 1966, for example, followed the same pattern, though its supper obeyed tradition and included no women. I don't remember that the Immortal Memory, the eulogy, was to "Burns the golfer" but it would have been no surprise if the speaker had imagined a link between the poet and the game. A speech along the lines of "What Burns would have been like as a golfer" is by no means improbable, his characterisation being so famously malleable. Burns the ploughman, Burns the romantic lover, Burns the Freemason, Burns the Scottish nationalist, Burns the international socialist, Burns the rebel, Burns the loyalist, Burns the drinker: all these personalities have been promoted and contested. At school, the man who taught us English was a big Burns enthusiast and also, awkwardly, a member of the temperance society known as the Rechabites after a tribe of total abstainers in the Old Testament. "Boys," he would say, "I ask you, how could a poor man on £40 a year afford to be a drinker?"
The temptation here is to mock Burns Suppers as an example of what historian Hugh Trevor-Roper called "invented traditions", a ritual that like Druidism, clan tartans and eisteddfods is essentially a Victorian reimagining of the past. But the historical record demolishes that idea. The memorialisation of Burns began only a few years after his death in 1796. There were Burns Clubs in the west of Scotland by 1805, a mausoleum in Dumfries by 1817, a monument (the foundation stone was laid by James Boswell's son with "full Masonic honours") started at his birthplace in Alloway, Ayrshire, in 1820. As to Burns Suppers, the first was held at his old Alloway cottage in 1801 and for several years commemorated his July death as well as his January birth. From the beginning, speeches were made to the poet's "immortal memory" – many guests had known him – and haggis featured on the menu as well as sheep's head.
The cottage, which the Burns family quit long before, had been converted to an alehouse and soon began to attract literary pilgrims. Keats, visiting in 1818, wrote to a friend: "We went to the cottage and took some whiskey … The man at the cottage was a great bore with his anecdotes – I hate the rascal – his life consists in fuz, fuzzy, fuzziest – he drinks glasses five for the quarter and twelve for the hour, – he is a mahogany faced old jackass who knew Burns – he ought to be kicked for having spoken to him."
As an after-death cult, Burns's was almost instant, and like all successful cults it had objects and places that followers could visit and feel attached to. Apart from the cottage itself, a marvel of humility, there was the River Doon of Ye Banks and Braes and the Brig o' Doon and the kirkyard where Tam o' Shanter had come unstuck. Long before Shakespeare's birthplace was saved for the nation in 1847, after the showman PT Barnum had announced his intention to ship it to America, Burns worshippers had a geographical focus. Wordsworth readers had to wait 50 years after the writer's death until Dove Cottage was open to the public; Keats had been dead a century before his house in Hampstead became a museum; the last Brontë sister died in 1855, but only in 1928 did the Haworth parsonage fall into the hands of the Brontë Society.
As well as prefiguring (and outnumbering) the literary tourists of other writers, early Burnsians were far more fervent. Religiously, they sought relics – and not just the poet's inkbottles, doorknockers and snuffboxes, most of them as spurious as nails from the cross. At the various sites of his career, souvenir-hunters stripped away pieces of bushes and trees and kept them labelled in glass cabinets. Paper-knives were fashioned from old Burns skirting boards and egg-cups from old Burns rafters, or least from wood alleging that provenance. After souvenirs began to be mass-produced later in the 19th century, the range of Burns's iconography became overwhelming. It could be safely asserted that no other writer has been remembered by so many different objects – from cigarettes to teaspoons – in so many parts of the world. Australia has nine statues and the USA 16; Atlanta got a full-scale reproduction of his Alloway cottage in 1910.
This meant that he was phenomenally present in quite ordinary Scottish households. My own not untypical home contained, as well a comprehensive edition of the work, a rough copy of his Alexander Nasmyth portrait, a picture of a plough, and an embroidered motto wishing that some power would give us the gift to see ourselves as others see us. Other homes had busts, Tam o' Shanter jugs and models of "The Cottage". How? Why? Some people put it down to "the psychopathology of a stateless nation". Professor Rab Houston of St Andrews University argues that, at a time of great social change, Scottish readers found in the ruralism and romance of Burns "a symbol of an allegedly uncorrupted Scotland".
Equally, he was an original and wonderfully memorable and quotable poet. Not for nothing did Keats and Wordsworth come knocking at his memorials. Faced with the "mahogany faced old jackasses" who inhabit the drunker parties of the January carnival, we should take a leaf from Keats and remember good poems that in their liveliness and sympathy have made Burns the most genuinely popular of British poets.
