To address an issue in the specification, the JSR 334 expert group has decided to ban the combination of diamond together with explicit constructor type arguments. For background, a constructor can have two sets of type arguments. In a parameterized class, constructors can have type arguments corresponding to the class's type parameters. This is the common case and the type arguments appear to the right of the class name and "new" as in "new ArrayList<String>()". In addition, if a constructor declares its very own type parameters (which can be done whether or not the enclosing class is parameterized), then those type arguments appear between the "new" token and the class name as in "new <Integer> ConstructorWithTypeParameter(Integer.valueOf(42))".

As with generic methods, the type arguments of generic constructors are usually inferred and not explicitly passed. However, generic constructors are much less common than generic methods.

After the specification change, using diamond to infer the class type parameters but explicitly passing the constructor type parameters is forbidden. However, the other three combinations of explicitly passing type arguments versus inferring them are supported, as shown in the table below.

The substitution that was used to formally describe the semantics of diamond did not fully propagate constraints if there was a typing relationship between the type parameters of the constructor and the type parameters of the class. Lifting the imposed restriction on the banned combination of explicit and inferred type arguments can be revisited in future work in the context of broader type inference getting added to the Java language.

Since generic constructors are so uncommon, adding this restriction about combining them with diamond should have little effect to most programs. For example, none of the uses of diamond in the JDK had to be updated as a result of this change. A changeset implementing this specification change has been pushed and will appear in subsequent promoted builds of JDK 7.

Kevin Mitnick was kind enough to send me a galley copy of his upcoming autobiography Ghost in the Wires. Amazon.com won't let me post a review yet, so I'll write what I would have supplied to the site.

In 2002 I reviewed Kevin Mitnick's first book, The Art of Deception. In 2005 I reviewed his second book, The Art of Intrusion. I gave both books four stars. Mitnick's newest book, however, with long-time co-author Bill Simon, is a cut above their previous collaborations and earns five stars.

As far as I can tell (and I am no Mitnick expert, despite reading almost all previous texts mentioning him), this is the real deal. Mitnick addresses just about everything you might want to know about. For me, the factor that made the book very unique was the authors' attention to detail. This sounds like it might have been a point of contention between the co-authors, but I found the methodical explanation of the social engineering and technical attacks to be relevant and interesting. Mitnick just doesn't say he social engineered a target; rather, he walks you through every step of the event! It's amazing, audacious, and in many cases beyond the pale.

One surprise for me was the amount of technical hacking Mitnick describes. He wasn't just crafty with a phone; he spent a lot of time at the keyboard executing technical exploitation of Unix variants. Interestingly, this may or may not include the so-called "Mitnick attack" whereby Tsutomu Shimomura's computer suffered the only documented TCP blind spoofing incident. In Ghost in the Wires, Mitnick says an Israeli hacker nicknamed JSZ wrote the code to implement the attack, and JSZ executed the Christmas Day 1994 exploitation of Shimomura's computer (p 326). Later on p 334, however, Mitnick notes the same attack worked against a different target (blackhole dot inmet dot com), so he may have executed that previously undocumented incident himself?

Ghost in the Wires also shares the human side of Mitnick's story. His description of solitary confinement and his anxiety of returning to those conditions seemed very real. They appear ever more relevant given recent treatment of Bradley Manning. One has to wonder about "cruel and unusual punishment" of those who are not convicted, such that they will sign plea deals just to avoid solitary confinement. Beyond prison issues, Mitnick's love for his family (especially his mother and grandmother) were clear throughout the book.

I very much enjoyed reading Ghost in the Wires, and I believe the majority of the computer security community would too.

Jordan Todman is a Running Back who went to Connecticut and left early for the NFL after his Junior year. He was current Colts RB Donald Brown's backup as freshmen, but came into his own once he got the starting job. 235 carries for 1188 yards and 14 TDs his sophomore season and 334 carries for 1695 yards and 14 TDs in his junior season. He was the second leading rusher in the country in 2010. He was his team's star player and led them to Big East Championship.

He'll come in as the 3rd running back behind Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert. He's a tough and shifty runner who could use some extra bulk to take the pounding that comes with that running style. He's not a Darren Sproles-replacement as far as style is concerned. He's a prospect that could become a starter one day or possibly a goal line back if Tolbert ever leaves. I would think that he'd also be able to contribute on special teams for kick coverage if called upon.

One thing to keep in mind is that he's described a "downhill Power O" type runner. That's more like LT, whereas many saw Ryan Mathews as a fit for a zone blocking scheme. The Chargers are more of the "Power O" type. So that's a good fit. However, like Mathews he's not a good option as a 3rd down back and frequently came out on 3rd down for the Huskies. He's more of an outside runner than an inside runner, but he's not afraid to go inside and make contact.

I like the pick. The Chargers were patient and waited to get a player with value at this point in the draft. At times he was talked about as a possible 2nd round pick, but settled into a 4th round projection by a number of experts. The Chargers pick up that value in the 6th round at a position that could use some depth.

NetBeans IDE 7.0 has just been released. NetBeans IDE 7.0 introduces language support for development to the upcoming JDK 7 release, currently available as a Developer Preview. That means the editor supports the Project Coin (JSR 334) language features such as strings in switch statements, the diamond operator, try-with-resources statements and more. "It allows you to write cleaner, more readable, less error-prone code," said John Jullion-Ceccarelli, NetBeans Engineering Manager.

The release also provides enhanced integration with the Oracle WebLogic server, as well as support for Oracle Database and GlassFish 3.1. Additional highlights include Maven 3 and HTML5 editing support; a new GridBagLayout designer for improved Swing GUI development; enhancements to the Java editor, and more.

NetBeans is free and open-source. You can download it from netbeans.org.

NetBeans IDE 7.0: The Smarter Way to Code

The Women's U.S. Open has been contested from 1946 through 2010, 65 times to date. The LPGA Championship has been contested from 1955 though 2010, 56 times. The Kraft Nabisco Championship has been contested 38 times as a major tournament from 1983 though 2011. The Women's British Open has been contested 10 times as a major championship from 2001 through 2010. The duMaurier Classic was contested as a major tournament from 1979 through 2000, 22 times and was replaced as a major tournament by the Women's British Open. The Western Open was contested from 1930 through 1967, 38 times. The Titleholders Championship was contested from 1937 through 1942 and then fron 1946 through 1966 and in 1972, a total of 28 times. A total of 248 championships with 3 more later this year. Since the LPGA was founded there have been 214 of the 248 total. After the LPGA was formed in 1950, there were only 2 majors for a period of ten years from 1968 through 1978 except for 1972. For 11 years total there were 3 major championships, 1950 through 1954, 1967, 1972 and 1979 through 1982. Counting this year that leaves 42 years when there were 4 major chamionships from 1955 through 1966 and 1983 through 2011.

Many people seem to think that the majors are the way to determine the all time greatest players. At one time there was a blog that attempted to rank the top 54 players based on their performance in the major tournaments. Betsy King won 6 majors and was not in the list. Needless to say, I was not impressed by that effort. However, as the numbers above show the LPGA has had less than 4 majors for one third of it history. In addition, in previous post I have pointed out the fact that in the early years of the LPGA there were only about 25 professional players playing a full schedule and the number has grown to around 150 players per year playing a full schedule since 1984. The lack of depth of the competition allowed the best early professionals to win a high number of major titles. On average the LPGA has played 30 tournaments per year. At 4 majors per year that is about 13.3% of the tournaments. Trying to rate the best players in a sport by ignoring about 87% of the tournaments played and the depth of the competition is totally without logic or merit. The idea that a player must win the Women's U.S. Open to be considered among the all time greatest is even more illogical and has less merit (1 tournament out of 30 - 3.33%).  The LPGA awards 2 points toward the LPGA Hall Of Fame for winning a major tournament versus 1 point for a regular tournament win. So winning a major tournament is more important than winning a regular tournament and is treated as such. My rating system awards double value for winning a major. The Women's U.S. Open has the most value in my rating system as it pays the most for winning and part of my rating is based on money won versus the average purse size per year.

There were 34 championship determined before 1950 when the LPGA was formed by the 13 Founders. Fourteen women won those 34 championships, 4 (Patty Berg, Louise Suggs, Babe Zaharias, and Betty Jameson)  were LPGA Founders and later won more championship as LPGA members. Additionally, 3 more Founders (Helen Hicks, Opal Hill and Helen Dettweiler) won before the LPGA was formed, but they never won more championships or even a regular LPGA tournament. Beatrice Barrett, Marissa McDougall, Jane Weiller, and Mrs Lee Mida all won the Western Open as amateurs. LPGA Founder Helen Dettweiler also won the Western Open as an amateur. Peggy Kirk Bell (as Peggy Kirk)  won the Titleholders Championship as an amateur and was later a part time player on the LPGA. Dorothy Kirby won the Titleholder Championship twice as an amateur. June Beebe won the Western Open twice as an amateur. Founder Opal Hill twice won the Western Open as an amateur but never won as an LPGA player. Founder Helen Hicks won the Titleholders Championship and the Western Open but also never won as an LPGA player. LPGA Founder Betty Jameson won the Western Open as an amateur and later as an LPGA player and also won the Women's U.S. Open as a professional before the LPGA was formed. Babe Zaharias Won 3 Western Opens and 1 Titleholders Championship as an amateur and the Women's U.S. Open as a professional before the LPGA was started. Zaharias then won 2 Women's U.S. Opens, 2 Titleholders Championships and 1 Western Open as an LPGA member (10 total major tournament wins). Louise Suggs won 2 Western Open and 1 Titleholders Championship as an amateur and 1 Western Open and 1 Women's U.S. Open as a professional before the start of the LPGA. Suggs then won 1 Women's U.S. Open, 1 LPGA Championship, 1 Western Open and 3 Titleholders Championships as an LPGA member (11 total major tournament wins). Patty Berg won 3 Titleholders Championships as an amateur and 1 Titleholder Championship, 3 Western Opens, and 1 Women's U.S. Open as a professional before the LPGA was formed. Perg then won 3 Titleholders Championships and 4 Western Opens as an LPGA member (15 total major tournament wins).

Since the founding of the LPGA, 2 amateurs have won major championships. In 1951 Pat O'Sullivan won the Titleholders Championship and in 1967 Catherine LaCoste won the Women's U.S. Open.

LPGA Founder Patty Berg has the most major championship at 15, but I would say that the 13 won by Mickey Wright in a time when the depth of competition was increasing is a better record, and that the 10 won by Annika Sorenstam with the most competition is just a little better. Louise Suggs won 11 and Babe Zaharias won 10, both were LPGA Founders. No other players have 10 or more wins in the majors.

After the LPGA was founded, to date there have been 214 tournaments won by 91 players, 2.35 wins per winning player. Of the players who have won a major, they have an average of 6.46 wins per major win. Currently there have been 10 players (11% of major winners) whose only win was a major. Hilary Lunke is rated at 353 of 449 players rated by my system. The lowest rating by a winner of a major tournament. Of the money Lunke has won, over 63% was won by winning the 2003 Women's U.S.Open. Birde Kim is the second lowest rated major winner at 334 of 449, and won about 47% of her total money by winning the 2005 Women's U.S.Open. Just as not winning a particular major tournament does not disqualify a player from being among the greatest of all time, winning a major including the most important major does not make the winner a good professional player.

When a major tournament comes around, the question asked is always "Who is currently the best player to never win a major?" This is my answer to who is the best player of all time never to win a major. Judy Rankin is the best all time to never win a major. Judy Rankin won the LPGA Player Of The Year twice and the Vare Trophy for low stroke average for the year three times and won 26 tournaments. The second best would be Jane Blalock who never won any of the LPGA awards but won 27 tournaments. The following list gives the players who never won a major in my Top 50 All Time Best LPGA Players and their position in the Top 50 and the number of tournaments they won.

However my ratings are based only on LPGA tournaments. Susie Maxwell Berning #58 (outside my Top 50) has a ratio of 2.75:1 with 11 wins and 4 majors. Annika Sorenstam my #1 rated player has a ration of 7.2:1 with 72 wins and 10 majors. Mickey Wright my #2 rated player has a ration of 6.31:1 with 82 wins and 13 majors.

There are 3 times that a player has won 3 major tournaments in the same year. In 1950 Babe Zaharias won all 3 majors. In 1961 Mickey Wright won 3 of 4 majors. In 1986 Pat Bradley won 3 of 4 majors.

Firstly was the 2003 Rockford Local Growers Semillon.  This eight year old from Barossa is an interesting, clean, fresh (despite its age) wine.  It has gunpowder on the nose, a little apple and some lettuce aromas with just the tiniest amount of honey, or honeydew melon, sweetness coming through.  The palate is all about pineapple skin and pencil, but what amazes me is that it is only 11.5% alcohol and you don't notice any of it.  This is an old school Australian white, and what I really want from this country, but sadly now wines like this are too high in booze.  Low alcohol is an old way of life in Australia, nearly extinct and except for a few old bottles. (7.5/10) Similarly, Star Wars Episode 4 tells the story of an old Jedi way of life, on the brink of extinction, with the evil Empire ruling all.  Until now, I have been a low alcohol Jedi. 

And then came The Empire Strikes Back, and the scene at Cloud City.  Darth Vader tells Luke Skywalker that he is his father and tries to convert Luke to the dark side of the force.  When I tried the 2006 Flaccianello della Pieve from Fontodi, I was being converted to the dark side.  At 15% alcohol, this is, in theory, far too big in alcohol for me, but such is this wines seductive ways, you become sorely tempted.  Very ripe fruit, lots of cherry and purple plum skin bitterness comes through on the nose with a good dose of chocolate, toffee and semi dried fruit including prunes and dates.  You are enticed further with big, powerful tannins that are delivered in such a soft way that before you know it you have been beaten up by them but don't care.  You get bitter chocolate, loads of leather and then the berries - at first slowly, but then a rush of more plum skin, then flesh and bramble leaves coated in juice.  A mighty wine with meaty elements, and earth on the finish. (8.5/10)

It is so seductive, instead of letting go and plummeting as Skywalker did, I'm getting Vader to throw me down a rope and I'm climbing up to join him in his high alcohol evil Empire.

Gone are the days of the $1 annual salary for Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt. Google plans to award him a proper salary now that he has turned over the reigns of the company to co-founder Larry Page, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Schmidt will now take in $1.25 million a year as chairman of Google’s board of directors, a role in which he is also expected to evangelize the company’s prospects in his travels around the world and oversee the changes that Page and co-founder Sergey Brin plan to implement with the transition set in place earlier this month. Like the founders, Schmidt previously took only $1 a year for his role as Google’s CEO (don’t worry, he made out quite well with stock-based compensation). Google said he’ll be eligible for a bonus of up to 400 percent of his salary, but in 2011 that won’t come to more than $6 million.

2011 NFL Mock Draft Has Experts Going with Four Different Players for the New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints do not have a ton of pressing needs, but they can stand to get a lot better with this pick.

Defensively they need another pass rusher, whether interior or edge, and also could use playmaking linebacker since they have failed to find one in recent years.

Offensively the biggest need one of the league's best units has is at running back where they can never seem to stay healthy.

All of those positions hold a certain amount of value overall and I think this pick will come down to who the Saints think they can get the most out of.

Mel Kiper Jr.: Phil Taylor

Taylor is a real load, and the best pure anchor tackle on the board. Listed at 334 pounds, Taylor probably played closer to 350 during an impressive final season at Baylor. You can stack blockers on him, but Taylor won't give ground, and will free up linebackers to make more plays in the running game. The Saints can't go wrong if they get a really good defensive tackle or defensive end with this pick.

Rob Rang: Mark Ingram

Clearly the Saints have bigger needs than running back, but Ingram is a special talent, who nonetheless could slip as teams de-value the position. Potential free agent Reggie Bush has struggled with durability throughout his career and Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory both missed considerable time in 2010. Adding a running back at some point in this draft wouldn't be a surprise.

Clayborn brings more flexibility to Gregg Williams' attacking defense. He's ideal for a two-gap scheme.

My pick: Akeem Ayers

First, I am going to start with the obvious. Kirwan comes out of left field with trade between the Saints and Bills. After adding Von Miller at No. 3, he obviously believes the Bills will call it a draft if they can get Locker and making the move up now, right before the Seahawks pick, is how this scenario plays out.

Going to the Bills at least gives Locker half a year on the bench learning the system while Ryan Fitzpatrick auditions for another gig. All in all it is actually a pretty favorable trade on both ends.

As for the rest of the picks, Phil Taylor is just a great value and should actually make Sedrick Ellis a lot better. 

Adrian Clayborn is a falling value that will be hard to pass while Mark Ingram is also a falling value that is really hard to pass up.

As for Akeem Ayers, I think he is perfect for this team. They have been looking for a playmaking linebacker for year and he helps them in coverage as well as pass rush.
