NYU Langone Medical Center raised over $9.7 million at its annual Violet Ball held on Wednesday evening at Cipriani on 42nd Street in New York City. Fiona and Stanley Druckenmiller were this year’s honorees in recognition for their longstanding support of the Medical Center.

Each year the Violet Ball celebrates the Medical Center's continuing tradition of excellence in education, research and patient care. Funds raised are used to advance the institution’s bold vision and strengthen its role as a rich resource for the diverse communities of New York and beyond. This year, the proceeds raised will go to support the new Neuroscience Institute at the Medical Center, established last year by a $100 million gift from the Druckenmiller Foundation. NYU Langone believes the $9.7 million raised for the gala is the second largest amount raised this year in New York City by a non-profit organization.

Addressing a standing room only crowd of over 850 guests, Robert I. Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center said, “I am so happy to be here this evening to celebrate the support and generosity of Fiona and Stanley Druckenmiller. This is an incredible and almost indescribable time as we envision what the Neuroscience Institute will mean for so many. NYU Langone Medical Center’s Neuroscience Institute builds on the Medical Center’s leadership in the field and will bring together more than 250 basic, translational scientists with clinicians to tackle some of the most challenging health care issues of the day, from Alzheimer’s disease to epilepsy, to multiple sclerosis and malignant brain tumors. Internationally renowned scientist and leader Richard W. Tsien, DPhil, the Druckenmiller Professor of Neuroscience, will serve as the director of the Neuroscience Institute.

Dr. Tsien commended the support of the Druckenmillers by saying, “I would like to thank Fiona and Stanley for their amazing vision, energy, dedication and willingness to take on this challenge. It’s their generosity that has made the Neuroscience Institute possible. Working together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to decipher the brain’s network codes and understand its role in specific diseases.”

Fiona Druckenmiller, a former portfolio manager at the Dreyfus Corporation, has been a trustee and strong advocate of the Medical Center since 2006. Stanley Druckenmiller, founder of Duquesne Capital Management, is also an active volunteer and is chairman of Harlem Children's Zone. Together, they have already given over $146 million to support various services and initiatives vital to NYU Langone Medical Center. Understanding the realities of executing visionary plans, the Druckenmillers have been actively fundraising and advising on institutional long-term planning.

Ciara is part of the Candie's Foundation and their causes, so last night she brought her man Amar'e Stoudemire to the 2011 Candie's Event to Prevent Benefit Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC last night.  CiCi just recently admitted the two are a couple--even though we've ben spotting her courtside at his games and them partying it up together for months--so they took advantage of the buzz and hit the carpet.

They do look cute together. 

Loving this white dress.  She paired it with her fave stiletto black Louboutin pumps and looked utterly fabulous.

On Thursday afternoon, Cipriani 42nd Street became Parisian for a few hours at the 26th annual Lying In Hospital at NewYork-Presbyterian fashion show and luncheon, hosted for the second consecutive year by Dior. A chic set of Gotham's philanthropic, many of whom are involved in (and/or gave birth at) the UES hospital's historical women's health wing, gathered for the occasion, including Shirin von Wulffen, Eleanor Yyvisaker, Ashley McDermott, Fabiola Beracasa, Samantha Boardman Rosen, Charlotte Sarzoky and Vogue's Alexandra Kotur. Fellow Voguette and event co-chair Lauren Santo Domingo was absent from the soiree after giving brith to her first child last week. A number of distinguished doctors were in the house for the occasion as well, including Dr. Herbert Pardes, president of New York Presbyterian, Dr. Frank Chervenak, Dr. Zev Rosenwaks and Dr. Ruth Westheimer, diminuitive in stature and all smiles as she posed playfully for photo ops.

One minute Jesse Eisenberg was a small-time actor in indie movies, the next he was starring in the film that defined a decade. He talks about life after The Social Network and why he'll never be comfortable with success

From a certain perspective, Jesse Eisenberg's acting career resembles a darkly ironic cosmic joke, with Eisenberg as the victim. The story goes like this: you are a shy and awkward child, deeply uncomfortable in your skin. Then, one day, you discover acting, which you find "enormously comforting". Performing a prescribed role soothes your paralysing self-consciousness; hiding inside a character, you get the attention you crave, minus the deer-in-the-headlights panic of trying to "be yourself". Unsurprisingly, you prove particularly good at portraying fiercely intelligent but emotionally semi-detached geeks, angry at the self-assured world from which they, like you, feel excluded. You do it so well that eventually, at 27, you're cast in one of the highest-profile Hollywood movies of recent years, starring as Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, for which you bag an Oscar nomination and justified critical acclaim. Which means that half your life, these days, is spent doing precisely what you'd fled into acting to avoid: being paraded around the movie-publicity circuit, not in character but as Jesse Eisenberg, put on the spot by talkshow hosts, stopped in the street by admiring fans and hassled by gaggles of journalists demanding that you tell them about yourself. No wonder you wear your hair in thick, curly clumps, almost down to your eyes: it's the only protection you've got left.

Not that Eisenberg is moaning about his situation. Arriving at a coffee shop near Grand Central station in New York, bike helmet in hand, he is on the contrary unfailingly courteous, posing patiently for photos with customers. ("Thank you, thanks for coming, thanks for doing this, thanks," he says to me as we sit down. This is supposed to be my line.) He is, of course, self-conscious about being so self-conscious, and so quickly grows uneasy talking about how much more he gets recognised in public since playing Zuckerberg: "Complaining about it is obnoxious, because it's the problems of the rich, you know, isn't it?" But it's clear he's deeply uneasy. "The thing I find most alarming," he concedes under questioning, "is that I've only been famous for three months, but it's been the three months [in which] anybody who didn't have a camera on their telephone before, now they do. So, in the subway, I'll turn around and see someone holding their cellphone up or their iPad and surreptitiously taking a picture of me, and it sort of feels... I mean, not to self-aggrandise, but it sort of feels like an attack. It's jarring." His eyes dart beneath his fringe. This is the final twist in the cosmic joke: Zuckerberg and Facebook may or may not be destroying our privacy, but The Social Network – which is in large part a meditation on that question – certainly seems to have ruined Jesse Eisenberg's.

It's a testament to Eisenberg's talent that so many of the characters he plays are of a piece, yet he never radiates the tedious Hollywood sense that he's just playing himself, or that he's a one-trick pony. His roles as the frustrated virgin Nick in 2002's Roger Dodger and as Walt, the furious and defensively contemptuous child of divorcing Brooklyn bohemians in 2005's The Squid And The Whale, seem in hindsight like logical forerunners of his portrayal of Zuckerberg, who channels similar resentments into billionairehood. (He also starred in two well-received 2009 comedies, Zombieland and Adventureland.) Eisenberg would probably sooner die than express the view that he ought to have walked away with Best Actor for his compelling performance in The Social Network, which manages to portray the Facebook founder as simultaneously intensely dislikable yet oddly heroic. But come on: in the absence of Oscar-bait period drama about a lovable British monarch, he surely would have done.

Following a brief detour to voice the part of a (geeky) pet macaw in the animated movie Rio, he can be seen next in the UK in Holy Rollers, directed by Kevin Asch, the true story of Hasidic Jews from Brooklyn lured into an Israeli ecstasy-smuggling ring in the late 1990s. Made before The Social Network, it's both less laugh-out-loud funny, and more engrossing, than its unpromising title suggests. Eisenberg plays Sam Gold, a 20-year-old whose naivety – at first, he thinks he's couriering medicine – makes him an easy target for smugglers who rightly predict that devout-looking men in black hats, long black coats and sidelocks are unlikely to be bothered by customs agents. The barriers that separate the youthful Hasidim from the New York that surrounds them aren't so different from those that separate Zuckerberg from Harvard's preppy elite. "It's different cosmetically, of course," Eisenberg says, "but it's still just a question of trying to bring some emotional realism to a character that's living in a very isolated world."

To research the role, he made multiple visits to Hasidic schools, and was given the barmitzvah that was absent from his secular Jewish upbringing. The seemingly isolated sect proved surprisingly welcoming. "They'd talk to me for hours and hours, and almost never question why I was there. One guy did ask, and I told him I was doing a role in a play – I thought if I said 'movie' it would lead to too many other questions – and he was, like, 'Oh. OK.' And that was it."

One might have assumed that someone as ill at ease in interviews as Eisenberg would clam up when asked to talk about himself; in fact, though, his dislike of such questions seems based more on the fact that he can't help but answer them candidly, in long, endlessly detouring flights of introspection. This isn't a matter of shtick; it's all real. Compliments seem genuinely to pain him ("The more people say nice things about me, the more I feel it's false," he told one interviewer). Being recognised in the street alarms him (though it has its upsides: "It makes you not want to do stupid movies, because you end up having to talk to people who like stupid movies," he has said). Success depresses him ("If you look at the movies that come out, most of them are bad, so it's not as if achieving some level of success means you get offered better roles, because frankly they don't seem to exist"); appearing on TV chatshows makes him paranoid ("I tend to feel I'm being mocked in some way"). He writes plays, with roles for himself, and there are plans to produce one of them in New York soon, but he worries that his writing might be rubbish and that nobody is willing to tell him.

Getting all this off his chest confers little relief, however, because then he just feels self-indulgent. When I point out that journalists, at any rate, prefer candid interviewees over hyper-controlled actors determined to give nothing away, he looks stricken. "But don't you think that's a good thing – saying less? Don't you think it's healthier than, you know, constantly revealing your deep fears? I mean, there's something almost more obnoxious in what I'm doing, isn't there, as though the world needs to hear all about my Jungian theories of myself? Right? I mean, wouldn't it be more respectful for me to say, 'This movie's so great! We're so excited that it's coming out in England'? Wouldn't it?"

Close family ties – plus the services of two therapists – are what seem to keep Eisenberg from drifting unrescuably into a vortex of anxiety and self-doubt. He was born in Queens, and his parents still live in New York; his younger sister Hallie, also an actor, appears in Holy Rollers. When we meet, he's en route to his weekly visit to his 99-year-old aunt, who lives uptown. His father teaches sociology in Brooklyn, and, unlike when he was a teenager, Eisenberg is now unembarrassed to discuss the fact that for two decades his mother worked as a children's party clown. "She didn't do my parties," he clarifies hastily. "That would have been strange. What she would do would be to barter with a local magician, so she'd do the magician's kids' parties for free. Although the magician cost a little more, so we had to give him a pie as well. To make it an equal transaction.

"Anyway, as you might imagine, she's very supportive of the arts. A lot of the things I do are so ridiculous, but not at all compared with what she's done. So that's nice... she knows what it's like to put yourself out there and make yourself vulnerable in order to entertain."

Eisenberg now lives in Chelsea with his girlfriend Anna – a 33-year-old executive at an arts education organisation who surpasses even him in publicity-shyness – in what he describes as "a very small apartment with no internal doors". They share it with a changing selection of troubled foster cats. (Eisenberg once said, presumably not entirely in jest, that he fosters new cats in proportion to how guilty or self-loathing he feels about each new professional success.) "Shanti has a neurological disorder," he says, describing the current residents, "and Snow Leopard has some kind of childhood trauma where he doesn't leave the closet. But they're so lovely. My job is a strange one, with no routine, so it's nice to have some kind of responsibility, even if it just means filling up two bowls."

Given Eisenberg's neurotic candour, it comes as something less than an enormous shock to learn that one of his next roles – after the crime caper 30 Minutes Or Less, due for US release this summer – is rumoured to be in Woody Allen's next movie, alongside Ellen Page, Alec Baldwin and Penélope Cruz. "The way he makes movies is so secretive, I'm not sure what the official status of that is," Eisenberg says. "But, yes, I am aware of it." Speaking of Page, the star of Juno, it turns out there is at least one identifiable upside to Eisenberg's new-found profile: he doesn't get mistaken for Michael Cera so much as he once did. "I guess, you know, I was in something that became part of the popular consciousness. So now," he adds, gnomically, "people mistake me for myself."

He is, he insists, less anxious than he once was. "I know some amazing actors who are not mortified every moment of the day," he says, hopefully, "so my feeling is that maybe you don't have to be a wreck to be good." But does he ever worry that successful therapy, or just growing older, might cause his anxieties to subside to such a point that he's no longer a virtuoso of on-screen awkwardness, too serene and comfortable with himself to portray discomfort and isolation so well? A flicker of a grin: "My therapist says I'm never going to get to that point, so I don't think it's going to be a problem."

And shortly thereafter he's back on the street, helmet strapped on, and launching himself off into the 42nd Street traffic, weaving perilously between cars and taxis, taking facefuls of exhaust fumes from buses – just another anonymous Manhattan cyclist, which is almost certainly exactly the way he prefers it.

In a very nice gesture, the Public Theater in New York will hold a memorial for legendary costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge. Aldredge, who died in January, was head costume designer at the Public for nearly 20 years, and designed the iconic costumes for A Chorus Line and HAIR, as well as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (not with the Public). April 20, 2011 – The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Interim Executive Director Joey Parnes) announced today that it will host a memorial to honor the memory of famed costume designer and friend Theoni V. Aldredge.  The legendary designer, who passed away on January 21, 2011, will be remembered in a memorial on Monday, May 9 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at The Public Theater. The memorial will be in the Newman Theater and is free and open to the general public.

The two-hour memorial will begin with remarks from Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, followed by Theoni’s niece, designer Merope Vachlioti, who will speak on behalf of the family. Guests will include Olympia Dukakis, Cigdem Onat, Ming Cho Lee, A Chorus Line co-choreographer Bob Avian, Tyne Daly, Arthur Laurents, Joel Grey and Theoni’s husband, Tom Aldredge.

Theoni V. Aldredge was the head costume designer for The Public Theater for nearly 20 years, working on over 80 productions. She began her relationship with the New York Shakespeare Festival designing costumes for the 1960 production of Measure for Measure and continued working with the theater through the 1988 production of Much Ado About Nothing.  During that time, she created some of the most memorable costumes to ever grace The Public’s stages, including designs for A Chorus Line, HAIR, Sticks and Bones, That Championship Season, and Threepenny Opera.

In addition to her work at The Public, Aldredge designed over 100 Broadway productions, beginning in 1959 with Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth and going on to include iconic works like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Gypsy with Tyne Daly, Dreamgirls, Chess, The Rink, and 42nd Street.  Her last design credit was for the 2006 revival of A Chorus Line. She was nominated for 15 Tony Awards, winning three for the designs of La Cage aux Folles, Barnum, and Annie.  Aldredge also worked extensively in film and television, winning an Oscar for her work on The Great Gatsby.  Her other film credits include Annie, Addams Family Values, The First Wives Club, Ghost Busters, Moonstruck, and The Rose.

In the age of digital music, vinyl gets second life in a Brooklyn factory

In an industrial and uninviting stretch of Brooklyn, near several strip clubs and a factory that makes electrical tubing, Thomas Bernich’s small plant recycles vinyl and preserves a fading piece of history.

In fact, Mr. Bernich’s workplace in Sunset Park is one of the few of its kind in New York City and in the country.

Inside the one-story, red-brick factory on 42nd Street, boxes of discarded albums from used-record stores are piled high on wooden pallets, awaiting their end and a new beginning.

The records are tossed into a large shredder to start the process of putting music on them again. The used vinyl is eventually fed into a press that creates new albums.

Mr. Bernich and the five employees at his company, Brooklynphono, have preserved the craft of applying music to vinyl.

NEW YORK -- The Associated Press stopped by the set of 'Sesame Street' in New York to learn about 'For Me, for You, for Later,' the financial literacy program for pre-school children that will be featured on the show's 42nd season starting in September.

People who advocate reducing the number of cars in urban centers often cite better air quality as a benefit. But that can sound suspect. How big a difference can the absence of a few cars really make?

Well, now we have numbers. For New York, at least. Back in 2009 Mayor Bloomberg prohibited vehicle traffic on Broadway between 42nd Street and 47th Street in Times Square to create a pedestrian plaza (video here). Now, the city's most recent Community Air Survey found that, "After the conversion to a pedestrian plaza, NO pollution levels in Times Square went down by 63 percent while, NO2 levels went down by 41 percent." Unlike N2O, which makes you laugh at Phish shows, NO2, or nitrogen dioxide, destroys your lungs and may cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Nitric oxide (NO) isn't good for you either.

Sixty-three percent? Forty-one percent? Those are significant changes. I hope someone is running a study to track how overall pollution levels in the city correlate to various respiratory diseases so we can translate those air quality stats into public health stats.

Shutting down streets to cars to improve the air you breathe to stay alive. File it with the ideas that work.

“Former President Bill Clinton fondly remembers a “romantic” time when you could still get a prostitute in Times Square. Clinton was at a news conference in Times Square with Mayor Bloomberg on Wednesday when a reporter asked him about the formerly seedy neighborhood. Clinton said he first visited Times Square in 1964 when he was a freshman at Georgetown University. He said he saw “a hooker approach a man in a gray flannel suit.” He said it was “pretty heavy stuff for a guy from Arkansas.” Clinton said the area is cleaner and safer now — and that’s good. But he sounded like he missed the old days. ‘I still have vivid memories of it,’ he said. ‘Romantic. Fascinating. It was dangerous.’”

Vivid memories? I’ll bet. He sounds a bit like the irate cabdriver who yearned for the Travis Bickle The Bronx Is Burning days of Times Square, who blamed the boredom of late-1990s New York City on then-mayor Rudy Giuliani back on Saturday Night Live: “Friggin’ Guiliani! Can you believe what he did to 42nd Street? … You gotta be kiddin’. I’ll take porn over Disney any day! … Listen, I’ve lived in this city for forty-four years. I was born here, and I can tell ya, three things make New York great: crime, noise and porn!”

The cabdriver, of course, was played by guest host Rudy Giuliani.

The woman right next to me was alive one second, then a taxi came up on the sidewalk of 42nd Street between 6th and 7th Avenue, hit her and veered off, and now the woman was dead. This happened on the first or second day of my job at HBO. I tried to call 911 on the payphone (there were still payphones in August, 1994), and then I had to go. The woman was dead.

The city's makeover of Times Square was enthusiastically endorsed yesterday by former President Bill Clinton, who recalled being a wide-eyed college freshman visiting 42nd Street decades ago and running into a hooker plying her trade. "I remember everything about it," said Clinton while sharing the stage at Gracie Mansion...

Despite positive reviews from local business owners, area workers, tourists, and other human beings, New York Post columnist Steve Cuozzo won’t stop frothing at the mouth about the pedestrian plazas in New York’s Times Square, lamenting that the once car-clogged streets have become “asphalt loitering grounds,” and that the redesign has “extinguished the strangely beautiful confluence of auto lights between 47th and 42nd streets, an archetypal image of elegant, urban dynamism.”

His latest screed was prompted by the proposed addition of food service to the plazas, which have been in place since spring 2009.

So I doubt that Cuozzo is going to be swayed by a new report from the city that shows pollution is down sharply in Times Square since the ped plazas went in. From the city’s report:

[C]oncentrations of nitrogen oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), two pollutants closely associated with traffic, were among the highest in the city [before the change]. After the conversion to a pedestrian plaza, NO pollution levels in Times Square went down by 63 percent while, NO2 levels went down by 41 percent.

Sixty-three and 41 percent less toxic crap that kills people in the air. That seems like truly “elegant urban dynamism” to me.

Even if you do your best to banish Bravo, and, as they say, "read"—and if you don't, well, don't go—the Paris Review's annual Spring Revel, held last night at Cipriani 42nd Street, might give you a complex. You had no idea James Salter went by "Jim"! You haven't read a damn thing Ann Beattie has written since the early nineties! Your idea of contemporary poetry begins and ends with Charles Simic! But before you get too hard on yourself, go hover near the door and luxuriate in your only opportunity to ogle Robert Redford (in this lifetime). Have a croquette. Wonder what Simon Doonan's table is talking about. Chase down a bellini; talk Grey Gardens with Celerie Kemble. Bother Joanna Coles between the proscuitto and the fish and reconnect with your sense of humor.

The Lark has launced the New Voices/New York project, which will provide each of its four Fellows with $20,000 over the course of 18 months in order to provide playwrights “the economic freedom to work at their craft and to share what they create.” They will also be paired with an Off-Broadway producer, have the artistic resources of the Lark at their disposal, and will receive $5,000 to use as seed money to produce their show, giving them a larger role in how and when their show gets produced. Playwrights Joshua Allen, Thomas Bradshaw, Bekah Brunstetter and Andrea Thome are the first playwrights in the program.

I know we’re in theatre, but let’s do some math. That’s $20,000 over 18 months, for playwrights living in New York City—one of the most expensive cities in the world. That’s a little more than $1,100/month for the playwrights—before taxes. (You do have to pay taxes on the grant, right?) That’s not a lot of money—certainly not (in my mind) enough for playwrights to actually live off of, which is the point of the grant. I mean, that’s $13k a year—the government sets its official “poverty level” at $10,890. The playwrights will be earning $2,110 more than poverty level. They must be expected to supplement this income somehow—perhaps with residuals from other plays, or other commissions they’ve received—which is certainly possible, check out their bios, they’re all pretty established playwrights.

Point being—yes, this sounds like a great fellowship, but let’s hope that increased artistic networking pays off, because it’s still a hard row to hoe.

FOUR LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS RECEIVE “NEW VOICES/NEW YORK” AWARDS TO DEVELOP ORIGINAL PLAYS WITH AN EYE TOWARDS PRODUCTION

NEW YORK, NY

The Lark Play Development Center today announced the launching of “New Voices/New York,” a fellowship program for local playwrights to develop new work with an eye towards production. Four awards have been granted in the first round of the program to playwrights Joshua Allen, Thomas Bradshaw, Bekah Brunstetter and Andrea Thome, thanks to major support from New York City’s Theater Subdistrict Council and additional support from Time Warner.

During an 18-month residency, New Voices/New York playwright fellows are the beneficiaries of a four-pronged effort to advance their careers: a $20,000 stipend for living expenses, artistic resources, an expanded professional network, and financial leverage for local productions.

“We want playwrights to think of writing as their job, not something they do when they get home from work if they still have the energy,” explained Lark’s Artistic Director John Clinton Eisner. “We’re helping them to recalibrate the equation that balances their needs with productivity. We often talk of giving artists a ‘home,’ but perhaps we should first provide them the economic freedom to work at their craft and to share what they create.”

Each fellow receives $20,000, paid in monthly increments throughout the fellowship period, to buy time to create new work. The program was designed in response to one of the most frequently-cited challenges facing New York City playwrights today – balancing artistic work and career development with the economic realities of day-to-day life. The stipend provides a financial bridge to writers who might otherwise need to work multiple “survival jobs” that take their focus away from playwriting. The Lark also contributes artistic resources to support the strategic goals set by playwrights for their residencies including office and meeting space, studio time, actors and directors, and staff assistance.

In addition, the New Voices/New York program enlists artistic leaders from four New York City theaters as “producer advocates” for the playwright fellows: Sherri Kronfeld, Artistic Director of SUPERWOLF (Brunstetter), Andrew Leynse, Artistic Director of Primary Stages (Allen), Louis Moreno, Artistic Director of Intar Theatre (Thome), and Jerry Patch, Director of Artistic Development at Manhattan Theatre Club (Bradshaw) have each committed their time and staff support during the fellowship to advise participating playwrights with respect to long-term career goals advancing their work to production. Bringing artists and institutional decision-makers together to build relationships is a core part of the Lark’s mission.

Finally, each playwright fellow is provided an Enhancement Fund of $5,000 with which to leverage a New York City production of a play developed during the residency. While this amount only represents a small portion of a play’s production budget, it is the Lark’s goal to help playwrights come to the table as partners in the production of their own work.

Joshua Allen, whose play Last of the Earlies was presented during Lark’s annual Playwrights’ Week Festival this past fall, will develop his intergenerational family play Boy in a Blue Tweed Suit and begin to write a second play, Chrysalis, about the trials and triumphs of being fourteen.

Thomas Bradshaw, whose play Mary recently debuted at the Goodman Theater in Chicago, will develop Hot & Sticky, which he began during a Lark playwright retreat on the Vassar College campus last July as part of an ongoing partnership between the Lark and New York Stage & Film. He will also develop a new play about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Bekah Brunstetter, whose play Miss Lilly Gets Boned was presented during the 2009 Playwrights’ Week, will begin work on Melancholia, which follows a family traveling the Oregon Trail and explores the nature and consciousness of depression during the 19th century.

Andrea Thome, whose play Undone was presented in Lark’s BareBones® program, will develop The Necklace of the Dove, inspired by the work of 11th Century Arab-Spanish philosopher Ibn Hazm and the world of Mexican transgender performers in Queens.

The Theater Subdistrict Council (“TSC”) is a not-for-profit corporation established pursuant to a 1998 zoning regulation that allows owners of certain Broadway theaters to transfer air rights within the Theater Subdistrict, provided the theaters are preserved, there are commitments to use the spaces for legitimate theater use, and funds are deposited into the Theater Subdistrict Fund. The TSC administers the Theater Subdistrict Fund and allocates grants with the goal of promoting the production of new theater work, developing new audiences, and showcasing Broadway’s singular role in the history of American theater. The TSC consists of the Mayor, the Speaker of City Council, the Manhattan Borough President, and the Director of the Department of City Planning, as well as four representatives appointed by the Mayor and the City Council Speaker from the performing arts, theatrical and related industries.

This past fall, TSC awarded grants to fifteen organizations, totaling $2.15 million, for various projects that will foster the creation of new theatrical work and audience development. In addition to the Lark Play Development Center, the award recipients are The 52nd Street Project, Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts, The Apollo Theater, The Atlantic Theatre Company, The Broadway League, Fractured Atlas, The Lincoln Center Theater, The New 42nd Street, Playwrights Horizons, Rosie’s Broadway Kids, Roundabout Theatre Company, Signature Theatre Company, Theatre Development Funds and Walker International Communications Group.

Mr. Bradshaw is a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow, 2010 Prince Charitable Trust Prize awardee, an Assistant Professor at Medgar Evers College, featured playwright in Time Out New York’s ten playwrights to watch, Village Voice’s Best Provocative Playwright, and was a Playwright in Residence at The Soho Theatre in London, where he wrote and work shopped The Ashes.

Andrea Thome - A Chilean-Costa Rican, Wisconsin-born mutt who grew up navigating the multiple landscapes and languages that now inhabit her plays. Her plays, translations and video satires have been presented at theaters, galleries and universities around the U.S. and Latin America. Andrea helped develop the Lark Play Development Center’s US-México Playwright Exchange as Program Director since 2006. Her translations of Mexican plays include Richard Viqueira’s play H and Ximena Escalante’s RealAndromaca (presented at New York’s hotINK Festival 2009 and at PEN World Voices). She is translating Chilean playwright Guillermo Calderón. Andrea’s own play Undone (originally developed by the Lark Play Development Center and INTAR Theatre’s New Works Lab) was selected for Victory Gardens Theatre’s 2010 Ignition Festival of playwrights of color. Worm Girl, her absurd physical comedy, was produced by Cherry Red Productions in Washington, DC (2004). Andrea co-directs the satirical video & performance collective FULANA (www.fulana.org). From 1994-99 she co-created twenty-two original plays with San Francisco’s Red Rocket Theater. She has also worked extensively as a performer; past collaborators include Culture Clash, Latina Theatre Lab, Campo Santo and Guillermo Gómez-Peña. She has taught at various universities, schools and community centers including New York University, Adelphi University, El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice, and NYC public schools. Andrea received fellowships from NYFA, New York City, the City of Oakland, Lark Play Development Center, INTAR, New York University and the Women’s Project. She is a graduate of NYU’s Dramatic Writing MFA and a member of New Dramatists.

My son is three and like many kids his age, he has trouble staying still. But at Potato Needs a Bath—a 30-minute puppet show currently playing at the New 42nd Street Studios—he sat rapt, and only moved his little body when he needed a better view of puppeteer Shona Reppe and her colorful cast of fruits and vegetables.

Even though this one-woman show was created with two- to five-year-olds in mind, I loved it just as much as my son thanks to clever puns and a creative set with cool nooks and crannies.
