The Ig Nobel Prize is given out by a group called Improbable Research, which celebrates "achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology."  The 2010 awards were handed out on September 30th, and one one of the doctoral students I work with, Isaac Waisberg, pointed out that one of the prizes was awarded to a simulation that demonstrated -- if the Peter Principle is true -- organizations would be better off promoting employees randomly rather than promoting people until they they reach their level of incompetence.  Isaac knew I was interested in The Peter Principle as I wrote the foreword to the 40th Anniversary edition. In the late sixties the Canadian psychologist Laurence J. Peter advanced an apparently paradoxical principle, named since then after him, which can be summarized as follows: {\it 'Every new member in a hierarchical organization climbs the hierarchy until he/she reaches his/her level of maximum incompetence'}. Despite its apparent unreasonableness, such a principle would realistically act in any organization where the mechanism of promotion rewards the best members and where the mechanism at their new level in the hierarchical structure does not depend on the competence they had at the previous level, usually because the tasks of the levels are very different to each other. Here we show, by means of agent based simulations, that if the latter two features actually hold in a given model of an organization with a hierarchical structure, then not only is the Peter principle unavoidable, but also it yields in turn a significant reduction of the global efficiency of the organization. Within a game theory-like approach, we explore different promotion strategies and we find, counterintuitively, that in order to avoid such an effect the best ways for improving the efficiency of a given organization are either to promote each time an agent at random or to promote randomly the best and the worst members in terms of competence.

I am don't believe that we ought to give-up and start selecting and promoting leaders randomly.  But it is interesting to consider randomness because doing so challenges our assumptions about the rationality of what we do in life  Indeed, speaking of randomness, last year I heard that Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman (he won the real prize, not to Ig) was running a simulation that seemed to show that if the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies were randomly reassigned to different companies, there would be no significant impact on firm performance.  I don't know what happened to that research, or even how accurate that rumor is, all I can find is this WSJ article where he chimes in on the subject.  If anyone knows more, please comment.

Ian Rapoport spoke with Kevin Faulk, who sounded relieved that the contract business was over and he could get on with the off-season.

"I had faith that in the end, it would work out," said Faulk, who agreed to a one-year deal that could earn him as much as $3 million.  "Like I said after the season, I was 85 percent sure I was going to be here.  There was just that 15 percent doubt.  If it came into play, it would have to be a strong 15 percent."

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Faulk heard from new Kansas City offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, as well as Denver coach Josh McDaniels during the free agent process.

"They all made phone calls," Faulk said of Weis and McDaniels, "but at the same time, they all knew where my heart was.  And all of those guys said, if it doesn't work out there, you have a place to come."

Only, it never came to that. When asked if he was trying to follow in Troy Brown’s footsteps and be a Patriot for life, Faulk responded: "I don’t think that’s a bad idea. What do you think?"

Tim Graham (ESPN) Adalius Thomas was the league's worst tackler in 2009.  Maybe that stat will finally get through to AD why Belichick benched him.

Adalius Thomas missed more than the start of a meeting last year. The New England Patriots outside linebacker was the NFL's worst tackler, according to ProFootballFocus.com research.

This week, I've been sharing tackle data compiled by ProFootballFocus.com analyst Sam Monson. He constructed a stat called "tackle inefficiency rating," which takes a player's number of missed tackles and solo tackles to come up with an evaluation.

We've already taken a look at how the cornerbacks and safeties fared. Now we'll wrap up the series by breaking down linebacker and defensive lineman grades.

Thomas failed miserably. Of the 436 defenders on the list, he finished dead last. ProFootballFocus.com tallied 18 solo tackles and eight misses for Thomas, giving him a 30.77 TIR.

Because the Chula Vista Civic Center Branch Library decided in mid-year to close on Fridays and Saturdays, the Society had to move its Saturday programs off-campus, and Fredericka Manor volunteered their auditorium and dining room to host two Saturday programs that benefited both CVGS and Fredericka.

Looking back on the year, this little society of ours had many quality programs - some of them "first-run, never before seen by a genealogy audience" and three were presented by society members, as were the two Saturday seminars.

Leon Haslam held on to take his maiden victory in World Superbikes by a split second in Australia.

Team Xerox Ducati kicked off their 2010 World Superbike Championship title chase at the 2nd fastest circuit of the series, Phillip Island in Australia. Redacción deportes.- El español Carlos Checa (Ducati) no pudo comenzar mejor su participación en el campeonato del Mundo de Superbike tras imponerse en la segunda carrera disputada en el circuito de Phillip Island, en el Gran Premio de Australia.

El inglés Leo Haslam (Suzuki) se impuso en la primera carrera tras escaparse en la salida y rodar siempre en primera posición, acompañado del italiano de Ducati Michel Fabrizio, al que sólo aventajó en cuatro milésimas en la línea de llegada.

En la segunda carrera, la igualdad fue la tónica predominante con un grupo de cinco pilotos intercambiándose el liderato en cada vuelta. Checa no estuvo entre los mejores en el inicio de la carrera, pero poco a poco mejoró sus prestaciones y se unió al grupo de favoritos.

Conforme pasaron las vueltas, el español fue ganando puestos, para, en la última vuelta, adelantar a Haslan y ganar.

"Ha sido increíble, mi idea era hacer una buena salida, pero ha sucedido justo lo contrario. Me he limitado a pasar gente, ha sido una carrera de libro y estoy muy contento de poder devolver con una victoria la confianza que en mi ha depositado el equipo", declaró Checa tras su triunfo.

El también español Rubén Xaus (BMW) decidió no tomar la salida tras sufrir en el 'warm up' la cuarta caída del fin de semana. La próxima cita del campeonato será en Portimao (Portugal), los próximos 27 y 28 de marzo.

Checa volvió a conseguir el mejor tiempo (1:32.227) en una sesión matinal con el cielo encapotado pero con la pista seca, pero en los entrenamientos libres de por la tarde cedió para terminar con el cuarto mejor crono.

Al concluir los entrenamientos de hoy, el piloto español comentó sentirse "feliz" con los resultados de su trabajo.

"Estoy satisfecho porque estamos cerca de los pilotos más rápidos y porque hoy también rodé a un ritmo rápido. Mañana saldré desde la primera línea y eso es un resultado importante para mí y para mi equipo, por lo que quiero agradecer a todos ellos la gran labor que hacen", dijo.

Just four hundredths of a second prevent Sylvain Guintoli from joining Suzuki team-mate Leon Haslam on the front row in Australia.

Leon Haslam is setting his sights firmly on breaking his World Superbike victory duck after claiming a maiden pole position for the 2010 season opener in Australia.

With shamrocks hung on doors and parade plans in the works, March is full of all things St. Patrick's Day. Along with the festivities comes a curiosity about the culture they represent. A good way to get acquainted with the Irish is to pick up a novel by one of the island nation's gifted authors. The wealth of Irish literature stems from the country's impressive historical legacy of folklore and storytelling, says Richard Haslam, Ph.D., a native of Belfast, Ireland, and associate professor of English at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pa.

Spain's Carlos Checa topped the timesheets at the end of first qualifying for this weekend's opening round of the FIM Superbike World Championship in Australia.

The Althea Racing rider cut the timing beam at the 2.76-mile Phillip Island circuit in one minute 32.155 seconds, good enough to edge out the Ducati Xerox of Michel Fabrizio by seven-thousandths of a second.

It was a good day for the British riders, with Leon Haslam, fastest in the earlier free practice session, finishing third and Checa's team-mate Shane Byrne in fourth.

The Althea team are making their first outing as a satellite Ducati squad this weekend and the pace of both Checa and Byrne will serve as a early warning shot to their factory rivals.

Both Checa and Fabrizio suffered falls during the course of the day, however, with hotter track temperatures than those experienced at last week's test causing some problems for the competitors.

"I had a fall, losing the front, but without causing myself, or my bike, too much damage fortunately," said Fabrizio. "During my fast lap I lost a couple of tenths through the last corner but I'm happy; we've worked well and I'm satisfied with the results."

The Suzuki of Haslam was just two-tenths adrift of Fabrizio, while Byrne threatened to go even better than his ultimate fourth place but a late fall curtailed his charge.

Noriyuki Haga was fifth on the second factory Ducati to complete a positive day for the Italian manufacturer while the Aprilia rider Max Biaggi took sixth.

Jonathan Rea took seventh for Ten Kate Honda ahead of Sylvain Guintoli (Suzuki) and Jakub Smrz (Ducati).

Cal Crutchlow completed the top 10 for Yamaha but team-mate James Toseland, making his return to the series after two years in MotoGP, could do no better than 13th after a fall.

The 2010 World Superbike season opens this weekend at Phillip Island in Australia, the first of 13 races. Compared to other series during these dire economic times, World Superbike is robust; the 2010 grid will include seven manufacturers, 26 riders and 16 teams.

Though the numbers are impressive, the series is still down eight privateers, including Stiggy Motorsports Honda. The team had two great riders last year, Leon Haslam, who rode full-time for Stiggy, and John Hopkins for few races, who has recently moved to AMA Superbike.

But don’t worry about Haslam; the young Brit landed a ride with the factory Alstare Suzuki team, and will be racing alongside Sylvain Guintoli on the GSX-R 1000. Haslam joins the only Suzuki team after having four podium finishes last season.

With defending WSBK Champion Ben Spies moving into MotoGP to compete against giants like Valentino Rossi, competition is expected to be extremely tight. Moving into Spies spot on Sterilgarda Yamaha is James Toseland. The U.K. native raced in MotoGP for the past two years on the Yamaha Tech 3 team alongside American Colin Edwards, but didn’t have much luck.

But World Superbike is a different story…he won two titles, one in 1994 on a Honda and the other in 2007 on a Ducati. Joining Toseland is defending World Supersport Champion Cal Crutchlow of the U.K.; last year was his rookie season in WSS. Before moving to World Supersport, Crutchlow had earned a British Supersport title, and then raced for two years in British Superbike.

All eyes are already on Ducati this year, since the 1098R landed the top four spots after pre-season testing at Phillip Island last week. The fastest? Michel Fabrizio on the Xerox Ducati, posting a 1:31.650.

The Italian placed third in the 2009 Championship, just behind his teammate Noriyuki Haga, who lost the title last year to Spies by a mere 8 points. Nitro Nori is seeking that first World Superbike title; the Japanese racer has three second-place championship finishes.

Second fastest during testing was Shane Byrne on Althea Ducati with a 1:31.662. The London native took the 2008 British Superbike Championship before moving to WSBK last year. “Shakey” Byrne rode for the under-funded Sterligada Ducati team.

Byrne’s teammate, Carlos Checa, was fourth fastest overall during testing. The Spaniard left MotoGP in 2008 and joined World Superbike on the Ten Kate Honda. Checa, along with Riyuichi Kiyonari, won the 2008 Suzuka 8 Hours riding for Dream Honda Racing 11.

The third fastest Ducati was ridden by Jakub Smrz on the Team Pata Racing Ducati team. The Czech finished 10th in last year’s championship, having one podium finish. The other Ducati riders are the Italians Lorenzo Lanzi on the DFX Corse Ducati Team, and Luca Scassa on the Supersonic Racing Team.

Entering its second year of competition, the BMW S1000RR will be ridden by some promising riders. Riding for BMW Motorrad Motorsport are Australian Troy Corser and Spaniard Ruben Xaus. Corser put the S1000RR in the top-ten eight times last year, with the best finish of fifth. The former World Superbike Champion also posted the fastest lap on the Bavarian machine at Phillip Island last year. Xaus wasn’t too lucky last year, but he does have 13 WSBK wins.

Riding for Team Reitwagen BMW are Australian Andrew Pitt, who has two World Supersport championships, and Austrian Roland Resch, who is a European Cup and Austrian Supermoto champion.

Alitalia Aprilia Racing is the sole team representing the RSV4. The Italian Max Biaggi was a big threat last year, placing the RSV4 on the podium nine times and taking one win. Racing with Biaggi is the 2009 British Superbike Champion Leon Camier. The Brit has little experience in WSBK, but during his Wildcard ride last year at Portimao, he finished sixth in Race 1, and seventh in Race 2.

The only American racing this year landed a spot on a Kawasaki ZX-10R with Team Pedercini. Roger Lee Hayden had a rough year in AMA Daytona SportBike last year, finishing the championship in 12th after complaining of bad set-ups.

But he does have a few World Supersport wins, and much experience with Kawasaki. Plus, his brother MotoGP racer Nicky Hayden will be cheering for him. Joining Hayden will be Italian Matteo Baiocco.

Green’s factory lineup, Kawasaki Racing Team, goes into 2010 with MotoGP rider Chris Vermeulen and former Spies teammate Tom Sykes. The Australian Vermeulen raced with Rizla Suzuki last year in MotoGP, finishing the championship in 12th. The Brit Sykes finished last year’s WSBK Championship in ninth, after riding a season in the shadow of the Spies media blitz.

Honda has the most teams, with three privateers and the factory HANNspree Ten Kate Honda. Jonathan Rea of the U.K. comes into the season after having much success last year with a fifth-place finish in the championship due to eight podiums and two wins.

The German Max Neukirchner joins Rea; Neukirchner finished last year’s championship in 16th place, having two podiums.

The rest of the Honda field includes Makoto Tamada of Japan on Pro Ride World Superbike Honda, Vittorio Iannuzzo of Italy on S.C.I Honda Gravie Image, and Broc Parkes of Australia on the ECHO CRS Honda.

This is a corpus that is unique in the academic world. It presents those parts of ancient Greek commentaries preserved on papyrus, that is the hypomnemata and marginalia on Greek authors, as well as glossaries and lexica. Previously these have only been published scattered in separate works. A new installment of some 250–300 pages is planned to appear every 2–3 years (a total of about 10 installments are planned for the period 2003/2020). The entire work is divided into four main sections: Pars I Commentaria et lexica in auctores; Pars II Commentaria in adespota; Pars III Lexica; Pars IV Concordantiae et Indices.

Most people, particularly those in scientific and professional fields, as well as a majority of the population, would like to believe that we make good decisions in our personal and professional lives based on deliberative, logical thinking. It appears that nothing can be further from the truth.

Alex Haslam, writing in Scientific American, cites the story of basic decision-making. In Gordium, Asia in the 4th century B.C., an oxcart was roped to a pole with a complex knot, and it was said that the first person to untie it would be king of Persia. Unfortunately, the knot proved impossible to untie. Legend has it that when confronted with this problem, rather than trying to untie it, Alexander the Great cut the knot in two with his sword, and then went on to conquer Asia. Ever since then the "Gordian Solution" has referred to the attractiveness of the simple answer to complex problems. Among researchers in the traditional scientific and professional disciplines, this solution has little appeal.

For example, in their conflict model of decision-making, published in their 1977 book, Decision-Making, Irving Janis and Leon Mann argued that complex decision-making is essential to guard against "group-think" and the decisions should involve an analytical and logical, detailed process. However, now there is a growing body of research that shows that there is little evidence to support a complex decision- making process over a simple one, as argued by Malcolm Gladwell, in his book, Blink.

One of the more enduring ideas in psychology, dating back to the time of William James, over 100 years ago, is the notion that human behavior is not the product of a single process, but rather reflects the interaction of different systems in the brain. Sometimes they work together seamlessly, and sometimes they conflict. The unconscious automatic is fast, affective, heuristic and relies on intuitive shortcuts. The other conscious system is slower, deliberate, rule-based, and logical.

These theories have been adapted in the social sciences, but do not provide an accurate description of human behavior. The major problem is controlled, conscious decision-making accounts for only a part of our overall behavioral tendencies, and often face strong competition from the unconscious system. Princeton University psychologist Adam Alter and his colleagues have studied how subtle changes in contextual clues can cause a person to switch from the conscious system to the unconscious and visa versa.

Let's take a look at some other research.

In a study by Hakwan Lau and Richard Passingham published in the Journal of Neuroscience demonstrated that the influences we are not aware of can hold greater sway than those we can consciously reject. We make countless decisions each day without conscious deliberation, a process called "biased competition," in which we decide among many options. The best kinds of biased decisions that are unconscious are habitual choices such as driving a car. Other unconscious influences are generally emotional or motivational, and take place continuously in our unconscious mind. In making complex decisions, legitimate factors sometimes make choices influenced by prejudice, so bias is hard to detect. Recent research by psychologist Eugene Caruso at the University of Chicago shows that people are willing to sacrifice quite a lot to fulfill their unconscious biases.

University of Maryland psychologist Anastaysia Pocheptsova and her colleagues found that individuals who had to regulate their attention--often called executive control--made significantly different choices than people who didn't. The researchers concluded that people who overtax their brains made inferior decisions. This insight suggests that the brain works like a muscle; when depleted it becomes less effective. If you've spent a lot of time focusing on a continuous series of choices, then you become less effective in making the next major decision.

In a recent Science article by researchers Ap Dijksterhuis and his colleagues, they argue that in order to be effective, conscious (deliberate) decision-making requires cognitive resources, and because that places increasing strain on those resources, the quality of our decision-making declines as complexity increases. On the other hand, unconscious decision-making, which does not require analytical-logical processes requires no cognitive resources; therefore, decision-making ability does not decline with frequency.

Research by John-Dylan Haynes and his team at the Center for Neuroscience in Berlin, Germany, demonstrated, using fMRI scans that they could tell what test subjects were going to do in a test experiment as early as 10 seconds before the test subjects were aware they had made up their minds. This study showed that unconscious predictive brain activity comes first and the conscious experience follows. Dean Sibata of the University of Washington reported in his study of brain functioning that when people make decisions that affect their lives, they would use the emotional parts of the brain as the driver, even though the task may not seem emotional.

These findings fly in the face of conventional management "scientific" theories of the past, which have argued for only one kind of thought process to support decision-making--logical, rational, analytical thinking in the conscious mind--totally ignoring our unconscious, emotional mind.

The implications of this research are significant for individuals in the personal lives and for organizations, particularly leadership behavior. It can summarize as follows:

* Unconscious thought processes can predetermine, without an individual's awareness, decision-making bias and actual decision-making;
* The unconscious mind and conscious mind are two systems that interact with each other to make decisions; frequent and/or continuous complex decisions are more efficiently made by the unconscious mind;
* Emotions are the key driver to decision-making, not logical, analytical thought; our logical processes are often only rational justifications for emotional decisions.

Leadership training programs, and managerial practices need to be reexamined in light of these research findings, and approaches developed that more accurately reflect an understanding of the thinking processes that underpin decision-making.

Doug Haslam has joined Voce Communications as Supervisor in the agency's social media focused Voce Connect division.

Previously Haslam was with Shift Communications as Account Director. He will remain in the Boston area and will work remotely for Voce Communications, as the company has several "satellite" offices.

In a phone interview today, Haslam he said he made the move to focus more on social media as opposed to traditional PR.

"I've really had an interest in that," he said. "There is a lot of demand out there and now is the time to really grab a position in that area. Nothing against traditional PR but to be on the vanguard of things has been on my mind for a while."

Voce Communications counts eBay, NetApp and PlayStation as clients. The agency also recently won Yahoo consumer PR agency of record duties as part of a combined team with Porter Novelli.

Stopping children eating junk food is surely a better way to tackle the problem of Britain's overweight population

There is still time to sign up for one of the most rational dates of 2010: next week's mass homeopathy overdose. At 10.23am on Saturday 30 January, anti-homeopathy activists, organised by the Merseyside Skeptics Society, will down entire bottles of homeopathic remedies outside branches of Boots, the better to demonstrate that these preparations are worthless.

Even though sales of Hahnemann's potions are likely to be unaffected, there remains a chance that the survival of hundreds of sceptics might persuade officials at Nice, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, to re-examine the funding of homeopathy within the NHS. It remains one of the world's great mysteries that the health service, with its austere, cash-strapped commitment to evidence-based medicine, should continue to spend an estimated £4m a year on sugar pills. Just a few months ago, it refused to prescribe an effective liver cancer drug, because it would not be "cost-effective".

Inevitably, an NHS moratorium would inspire a backlash, probably led by Prince Charles, who is believed to attribute his survival from a broken arm to the generous application of arnica. But the NHS is, generally speaking, remarkably robust when accused of rationing, callousness and victimisation. Last week, it was the turn of the Royal College of Surgeons to protest that the unequal provision of gastric bands and other "bariatric" surgery within the NHS is "inconsistent, unethical and completely dependent on geographical location".

Choosing to ignore the fact that there is a perfectly good homeopathic remedy for obesity, a prominent surgeon, Mr Peter Sedman, argued, persuasively, that the risk and cost of the operation (around £6,000), was justified by the improved health, with concomitant NHS savings, of patients for whom dieting has not worked. Since it has only lately become popular, in response to the prevalence of obesity, there is a natural shortage of studies to prove the effectiveness of gastric band surgery over the long term. In their absence, there must be a possibility that other expensive treatments, routinely denied to frail people whose recovery will be a relatively short-lived affair, may be equally good contenders for funding.

An elderly patient, not overweight but in need of a new hip, or a decent hearing aid, might argue that she is also more deserving, not having brought her illness on herself. A welcome sensitivity to the feelings of obese people probably prevented this fairly commonplace objection being voiced as forcefully in media coverage as it was on various websites.

But the most arresting aspect, surely, of this intervention by bariatric specialists is the enthusiasm for an extreme surgical treatment as opposed to long-term prevention. Where other controversial procedures are concerned, for conditions such as alcoholism or age-related infertility, liver doctors and gynaecologists are remarkably free with lectures not to drink too much or to leave it too late in the first place or live with the consequences. It is no excuse, you gather, to argue addiction or to protest that the right man never turned up. But where excessive eating is concerned, bariatric surgeons propose an accepting approach that is arguably, given the increase in obesity, more in tune with the times.

After suffering years of bullying and discrimination, obese people certainly deserve some official support. But it is perhaps asking too much for Dr David Haslam, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, to demand that everyone endorse the NHS investment. "Even the most cynical taxpayer," he said, "should support bariatric surgery, alongside clinicians, in opposing the unethical and immoral barriers to surgery imposed by NHS purse-string holders."

Is it conceivable that taxpayers are less cynical than obesity experts? Many, I imagine, will sympathise with the unhappily overweight at the same time that they resist any attempt to normalise current levels of obesity, to suit an increasingly obesogenic world. Should it really be treated as an unexceptional degenerative misfortune, like arthritis, deafness or cataracts? It certainly competes with them for resources. You could almost think of the mass surgery that is proposed as, to quote Dr Haslam, unethical and immoral. How many people should be allowed to reach the desired qualifying body mass index of 40, or thereabouts, before bariatric surgeons themselves decide it might be time to start rationing treatment and agitating for a more pre-emptive approach? Mr Sedman suggested that 1 million patients might now be eligible for surgery in the UK.

Given the government's proven uselessness in addressing obesity, there is no reason to expect any decline in the number of candidates. If it has not actively been trying to fatten up its citizens, like so many Strasbourg geese, this has certainly been the consequence of New Labour's complacency, with one in four children now overweight. Two decades ago, it was one in 20. Naturally, there have been projects and schemes and action plans; they appear to have made no difference. And why should they?

Physical activity in schools has not been prioritised to compensate for sedentary home lives; school meals were left to the unfortunate Jamie Oliver; there has been no concerted attempt to reduce sales of fat-building junk. On the contrary, the sports minister collaborated with Cadbury on a "chocolate for footballs" scheme in schools. It was calculated that a 10-year-old child eating enough chocolate to earn a basketball would need to play basketball for 90 hours to burn off the calories consumed.

In 2006, the audit commission complained about a "lack of leadership" in the government's campaign against obesity. In 2007, another report, from the government science group Foresight, called for a "societal" strategy. Again, in October 2009, the all-parliamentary group on obesity repeated the need for a "coherent approach". To these and other recommendations, the government has responded by making Cadbury an official sponsor of the 2012 Olympics, along with McDonald's and Coca-Cola, where it will be the sole supplier of chocolate and ice cream.

The allegedly healthful legacy of the junk food Olympics (now sponsored by Kraft), is likely to come too late for children who have been raised, from a tender age, on swill. A Soil Association report has just established that, in the absence of any national standards, many nurseries spend as little as 25p on lunches featuring chips, sweets and chocolate. All these children need do, to qualify for a gastric band operation, is keep eating the same thing for the next few decades.

It seems unlikely a Conservative government will address the imbalance. Though he once declared war on Chocolate Oranges, David Cameron's advice for the heavy – basically, that they get a grip – suggests he finds diet less attractive as a proposition for state intervention than he does marriage. So perhaps the bariatric surgeons are right: before long, the installation of a gastric band may be as much a rite of passage as having your wisdom teeth out. Unless, of course, you want to take the alternative route. For the relevant homeopathic remedy, contact your GP.

Leon Haslam continues to lead the charge of the Brit Brigade on the first day of testing for the World Superbike field at Portimao. The young Briton took a quarter of a second off his time from this morning, but remains out of reach for the rest of the field. Another young British upstart finished the day 2nd fastest, Cal Crutchlow doing a sterling job of filling Ben Spies' shoes at Yamaha. The reigning World Supersport champion edged out Ulsterman Johnny Rea on the Ten Kate Honda by less than a tenth, making a British 1-2-3. Indeed, if the MotoGP refugee James Toseland had been just 0.014 seconds quicker, it would have been a top four for British riders, the Yamaha man ending the day just a tiny fraction behind Aprilia's Max Biaggi.

Championship runner-up Noriyuki Haga ended the first day of official testing as 7th fastest, nearly 0.8 seconds behind Haslam, and less than two tenths ahead of his teammate Michel Fabrizio. Ex-Yamaha man Tom Sykes was fastest of the Kawasakis in 12th, fractionally ahead of the quickest BMW man Troy Corser. Testing continues tomorrow.

I read this short piece, “The Great Journalism Exodus,” by Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic. In it, he discusses the fact that many journalists are switching over to public relations jobs. That’s nothing new, but we’re definitely seeing more of it in this economy, and with the “traditional” media changing and shedding jobs in the process.

But Goldberg also wrote a couple of things that irked me. First, on whom PR flacks will pitch if the “media&#8221; are shrinking:

“…they’ll flack to underpaid, undertrained bloggers.”

Well, yes, in a sense there is some truth to that. But they’ll also flack to passionate people who happen to blog- those bloggers not only are closer to the audience than mainstream media&#8211; they are the audience, in a way traditional media tries not to be. That’s just another short-sighted disdainful slap at those “amateur bloggers” from the ivory tower of print media.

It also gets to another pet peeve, which is frankly perpetuated by many PR agencies and some of their clients: that PR is all about media (including blogger) relations. Of course, that would be a journalist or columnist’s view of the world, and I have certainly seen this point of view played out in a skewed manner too many times. PR is so much more than that- messaging and strategy, crisis counsel (wouldn’t a seasoned reporter be good at that?), and, becoming more important, content creation (I think journalists know a thing or two there as well) are equally important parts of the PR mix.

Goldberg also quotes Richard Mintz of the DC-based Barbour Group:

“Journalists by their nature don’t make great advocates or public relations people because they’re trained to be objective rather than to take sides,” he said. “They also tend to work alone, and they have no business experience.”

Journalists don’t make great advocates? Two things wrong with that: first, a balanced story, even if sponsored (and disclosed as such) by a client, is a better sell to media and the public. It’s more interesting, and gains trust with the media and the audience. Second, while journalism strives to be objective, every outlet, every reporter and editor, every story has a pint of view that affects the outcome, even if only in the slightest. I’ve been a journalist, and I never pretended otherwise. Furthermore, Goldberg’s example of hack-turned-flack is a reporter from the right-leaning (some friends will say I’m being kind) Washington Times going to work for BGR Group, a PR firm founded by Republican lobbyist and now Governor Haley Barbour. Sounds like a natural fit to me. Taking sides? Believe me, that’s an easy transition, and it was easier for me than I thought it would be 12 years ago.

As for no business experience, point taken. I guess hacks turned flacks will have to compare their business experience to 22 year olds right out of university PR schools (no offense, best and brightest students!).

Most reporters who want to pursue PR jobs will be just fine, as long as there are the jobs for them. I have seen many make the adjustment just fine over the years.

I’m starting the New Year feeling pretty damn lucky. I have a job I love, we’ve got great energy, and the company has tremendous upside. As you may have seen in a previous post, much has changed for me over the past year.  Although the economy has improved, unfortunately there are still many friends who are in transition. I am so grateful for the help and support that many friends gave me during my jobless period. Today, it is time to give back.

Doug Haslam is making a career transition.  This is the first time in about ten years that he’s left one job without immediately having another to go to. Doug is truly one of the nicest guys in social media. He was one of my first friends on Twitter.  Doug is generous by being helpful to all he “meets” online. He is so witty that it’s no surprise that he had a ton of followers when the Twitter universe was small and that actually meant something. With his Boston references and Sox chatter, he always helps me stay connected to the Hub of the Universe, even from 3000 miles away. I am confident that Doug will find a great opportunity that suits him soon.  He is just too bright, too connected, and too much of a real PR professional that understands social media as well as traditional media. As you can imagine, Doug has a wealth of social capital that will no doubt help him. He’s also got some pretty good insights on using social media to find a job.  Having been through it myself, I know he’s got the right approach that will propel his career. Still, I know that a little help from his friends will be appreciated.

So how can you help Doug? Even if you don’t live near him or work in his industry? If we’ve learned anything from social media over these last few years, it’s the importance of community and the connections we make within that community. In my experience, there are three things that will always help and always be appreciated.

1. Reach out to him and make an introduction that you think will be meaningful.
2. Write a Linkedin recommendation for Doug.
3. Write a blog post like this one which will introduce Doug to your blog community.

These actions are not hard to do and take it from me, not only are they appreciated greatly, but they do help.

Alstare Suzuki's Leon Haslam was the fastest of the World Superbike paddock on the first day of testing at Valencia. The young Briton was quickly up to speed on the new Suzuki GSX-R1000, taking two tenths of a second off Noriyuki Haga's race lap record at Valencia. That was exactly the same margin by which Haslam was faster than Max Biaggi, the Aprilia rider continuing his development of the RSV4, the bike continuing to show potential.

James Toseland had a strong outing at his second test of the bike, and pronounced himself pleased to be riding at a track he knows so well, after initially making his debut on the Yamaha R1 at Portimao, a tough track to master, without also having to get to grips with a new bike and tires. Toseland and his team mate Cal Crutchlow spent their time working on a new electronics package, the necessity of which was demonstrated by an early crash for Toseland. The Englishman locked the rear of his Yamaha up on a cold tire, while changing down between Turns 4 and 5.

Johnny Rea set the 4th fastest time of the day, just ahead of Crutchlow. Crutchlow was 0.7 faster than the second Ten Kate Honda rider Max Neukirchner, Aprilia's Leon Camier and Aprilia's test rider Alex Hoffman.
