With three games left, and holding the head-to-head tie-breaker, Milan need just a point to seal a first Scudetto since 2004

Perhaps Gazzetta dello Sport forgot who they were addressing. "Dear Milan, you will need to change the date for your Scudetto party," declared the pink paper on Sunday morning after Inter had prolonged the title race - mathematically at least - with a remarkable injury-time comeback against Cesena. And yet, later that same day, there was Silvio Berlusconi, barrelling towards the home changing room at San Siro bearing a smirk that the Cheshire Cat would envy. There he would remain for a good 45 minutes to celebrate with his players.

If it might be a greater surprise to find the Milan owner shunning an opportunity to party then it is also true that his employees seemed ready to join in. The Rossoneri's 1-0 home win over Bologna might not have been much of a spectacle, but it had been enough to restore their eight-point lead over Inter at the top of Serie A. With just three games remaining, and Milan holding the head-to-head tie-breaker, Berlusconi's team need just a single point to seal their first title since 2004.

"We are 99.9% there," declared Milan's manager, Massimiliano Allegri. "I think now we can say yes [the title is won]. We hope to seal it on Saturday, in our match at the Olimpico against Roma." His captain, Massimo Ambrosini, concurred, saying: "We would have to be idiots now to let the Scudetto slip away". Only the vice-president Adriano Galliani took a more cautious tone. "For now we are only mathematically assured of second place," he noted.

If Galliani could point to a less than convincing second half - one in which Milan's sloppy defending at corners had very nearly granted their limited opposition a route back into the game - as evidence of the need for such caution then Allegri still had every right to feel satisfied. This was Milan's fifth league win in a row, a run that has included a 3-0 rout of Inter in the derby and an impressive win at a rapidly improving Fiorentina. Just as with last week's victory at Brescia, it was achieved without both of his most prolific strikers.

The absence through injury and suspension, respectively, of Alexandre Pato and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, each responsible for 14 league goals so far this season, were supposed to represent the last great hope for Milan's title rivals, a crucial blow at a critical moment to the side who have been top since mid-November. Without them Robinho would be forced into an unfamiliar role as prima punta - the forward-most point of the attack - while Antonio Cassano would have to play from the start despite enduring concerns over his fitness.

But where last week the Rossoneri were held goalless for 82 minutes by Brescia, this week there would be no such anxiety. Not eight minutes had passed when Mathieu Flamini raced into the box, seeing his initial shot parried by the Bologna goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, before prodding the rebound into the unguarded net. One goal, it would turn out, was all that would be required.

That it should be Flamini getting the goal seemed apt. Long gone are the heady days of last summer, when the additions of Ibrahimovic and Robinho to a squad already featuring Pato, Ronaldinho and Pippo Inzaghi prompted delirious visions of five-attacker formations, perhaps with Clarence Seedorf tucked in behind for support.

Allegri has deployed the attacking options at his disposal skilfully, and not for nought are Milan the second highest scorers in Serie A this year, but his has been a victory, too, for pragmatism and defensive discipline. Flamini's only previous goal this season, indeed, arrived in a win at Bari last November that was heralded as the arrival of the "Milan dei mediani" - the Milan of the holding midfielders. The Rossoneri's three-man midfield that day consisted of Flamini, Gennaro Gattuso and Massimo Ambrosini.

The manager has continued to vary his formula throughout depending on the opposition before him and players available to him, a fact that has often meant Flamini being left on the sidelines. This was only the Frenchman's 13th start of the season, and yet here too lies the strength of this Milan side: where others have been over-reliant on their starting XI, Allegri has been able to rotate with great success. Among the many happy side-effects of this policy has been the far greater freshness of his players down this final stretch.

As for Flamini himself, it is perhaps typical of his experience in Milan that he should score such a crucial goal on the day on a national holiday - one which is observed, too, by Italy's national newspapers, meaning that no editions are published today. By the time of the next edition his goal will be old news, likely to be relegated to second billing behind quotes pieces and speculation about how the title will be celebrated.

Three years after joining Milan from Arsenal, Flamini's role at the club very much remains that of a squad player: one who is expected to step in as required and do a job, even if Allegri has at least not required him to do so at full-back as Carlo Ancelotti and indeed Arsène Wenger at Arsenal formerly did. At times he has not received as much credit as he has deserved. Other than the goal against Bari, his only other big headlines this season stemmed from the reckless challenge on Vedran Corluka in the Champions League.

Yet even before Sunday's goal, the player had said in recent weeks that he is happy with his role, that he feels a part of this team now and believes he is contributing to the team. Besides, far more satisfying than any amount of credit will be that moment, on the very near horizon, when the Scudetto party kicks off in earnest.

Two first-half goals, courtesy of Giuseppe Mascara and Marek Hamsik, were enough to give Napoli the 2-0 win over Bologna<</span>!> and move them into joint first-place with AC Milan. Of course, Napoli did their very best to take years off the lifespans of their supporters in the second half, allowing Bologna, and Marco Di Vaio in particular, to send shot after shot at the goal of Morgan De Sanctis. But the Holy Goalkeeper managed a couple of spectacular saves which, combined with Di Vaio's inability to get the ball inside the posts, allowed Napoli to take the clean sheet.

The visitors opened the scoring with a goal by Giuseppe Mascara, his first in a

partenopei kit. The forward, filling in for the suspended Edinson Cavani, tapped the ball in after Emiliano Viviano spilled a sexy back heel from Ezequiel Lavezzi. With a 1-0 scoreline, Napoli looked utterly dominant. They continued to put pressure on the Bologna goal, with Bologna's only response to hack away at partenopei ankles, shins, and whatever else they could reach.

It wasn't the overly physical play that led to Napoli's penalty at the end of the first half, however, but rather another mistake by Viviano. Both Hamsik and Lavezzi slipped behind the high Bologna line, going two on one with the Bologna keeper. But rather than shoot at an empty net, Hamsik elected to pass off to el Pocho, for reasons not comprehensible even to his biggest supporter. Apparently Hamsik thought the ball would go straight through Viviano and on to Lavezzi, but instead the keeper charged straight into Lavezzi, sending him sprawling into the grass. It should have been a straight red on Viviano, but a yellow was given as the ref pointed to the spot. Hamsik stepped up, putting the ball straight down the middle and into the back of the net.Napoli were fortunate to not have their two goal lead canceled out in the second. Di Vaio, who's normally been spot on for Bologna this season, managed to scuff at least two shots just wide of the post. Di Vaio also missed a prime opportunity in the 56th minute when De Sanctis came charging off his line. The forward went straight around the keeper but was apparently thrown off by De Sanctis's clownlike antics and sent the shot into the side netting.So Napoli come away with the win, although it was much closer than the 2-0 scoreline suggests. They wait now on the last match of Week 32, with Milan traveling to

Fiorentina<</span>!>, desperate to again put themselves on top of Serie A.

The Stadio Renato dall’Ara brings back bad memories for any Chievo fan. It was here that the Mussi Volanti had their wings clipped against Catania in a neutral-site game nearly four years ago. In the time since, we have fallen 4-0 here to Bologna in Serie B, and drawn twice at 1-1 since both clubs returned to Serie A. It’s about time to turn this trend around as Chievo meets Bologna this coming Sunday.

Ambitions are very different for these two sides that once battled for cadetteria<</span>!> supremacy. Bologna have yet again plunged toward the relegation muck. On the other hand, Chievo, though they will obviously speak only of salvezza<</span>!> until the 40-point mark is surpassed, might have an outside shot at European football, especiially if they can parlay this past week’s success into a more extended run. They will be alternating “bigs” with relegation battlers for the next ten weeks (Bologna, then Roma; Lecce, then Juventus; Udinese, then Palermo; Catania, then Genoa; Brescia, then Napoli… etc.), so learning to keep the emotion and aggressiveness from a big match going against a minnow could make us a force to be reckoned with. Since I’ve been a fan, Serie A point #19 has been obtained on February 18, February 8, and December 6. So having that in the bag before Thanksgiving is pretty sweet… Onward and upward, I say!



Recent History Chievo (19 points; 9th in table; DLDDW)
– My, what a difference a week makes! Seven days ago, we were in the midst of a 300+ minute scoreless drought, lamenting the absence of Sergio Pellissier and feeling like the magical first four giornate happened three years ago instead of three months ago. Today, we have humbled the Champions of Europe, the attack has demonstrated their ferocity, and we look like a whole new team… or maybe better stated, we look like the old team that rampaged through Genova and Napoli for six goals and six points back in September. The real trick this week (and all weeks from here on out) will be getting “Giant Killer Chievo” to show up for games like this. The club that has beaten Genoa and Napoli by two goals each and just took out Inter is the same club that also failed to score against Cagliari, Brescia, Parma or Bari. I saw something discouraging on Sunday, as regards that trend: Chievo continues to get their most dangerous chances solely from counterattacking maneuvers. Both of Pellissier’s missed chances in the first half, the opportunity Fernandes wasted in the second, and (of course) both goals arrived on the break. That’s nervewracking, because when a fellow minnow flips the script on us and focuses on bottling us up, we struggle to create much of anything. I’d like to have faith that our boys can find the back of the net without the aid of a "rush of blood to the head", but I just don’t know…


Bologna (14 points; 16th in table; LWLWL)
– They actually have as many points as Chievo do in their last five matches, but they have been a feast-or-famine side. Early in the season, it was mostly famine as they won just one of their first nine matches before the first “W” in that form list above. As of late, they appear to coming on, which is at least a little surprising given the turmoil they’ve dealt with in the boardroom. Alberto Malesani’s boys haven’t been getting their paychecks, and the club may be headed for bankruptcy or (more likely) an imminent sale. The
rossoblu’
are certainly a team capable of putting up goals, especially when the service to forward Marco Di Vaio is good (he has seven of Bologna’s twelve goals this season and sits third in the capocannoniere standings behind Eto’o and Cavani). However, the team has been most defined by an exceedingly porous defense that has let in 19 goals (only Lecce and Bari are worse) and have conceded 3 or more goals on three occasions, most recently in last week’s 4-1 demolition in Napoli.

Player to Watch Chievo – Sergio Pellissier – Well, why the hell not?! He’s a dynamo and our offense isn’t the same without him. Grazie a cielo
he’s back… Bologna – Emiliano Viviano – Since I don’t anticipate a particularly attacking side on Sunday, the real question will likely be whether Viviano, the up-and-coming
Azzurri
goalkeeper, can keep a clean sheet against Sergio &amp; Co. My guess is “no”.

The Weakest Link? Chievo – Kevin Constant – Hard to choose one after that performance, but if he’s not fielded at his natural position (left midfield), I’ve got to go with Constant. He wasn’t anonymous in the match against Inter, as I’ve often described Bogliacino, but he’s just not a trequartista<</span>!>. He obviously shades to the left when he gets the ball in the midfield, and his skills are better utilized there. I have a suggestion, and it’s coming in the “formation" section.
Bologna – Vangelis Moras – Bologna have look particularly vulnerable on the left side of the box, and while Daniele Portanova is not available due to injury, his replacement hasn’t looked much better. Persistent runs from Constant and Fernandes right at him appear to be the order of the day. Hopefully Viviano is running out of miracles.

(4-3-1-2) Sorrentino; Frey, Cesar, Andreolli, Mantovani; Fernandes, Rigoni, Marcolini; Constant; Moscardelli, Pellissier (Bench) Squizzi; Mandelli, Sardo, Memushaj, Guana, De Paula, Granoche

As pertains to the Starting XI, I change nothing except for replacing the injured Cyril Thereau; it’s tough to argue for changes after a performance like the one last week. However, if things aren’t developing nicely by halftime, I pull Marcolini in favor of Ledian Memushaj (an intriguing player from whom much is eventually expected) and move Constant to the left. Different opponents require different strategies (no matter how well a formation may have worked against Inter), and this Bologna club is more like the Sassuolo team we beat in the Coppa Italia than like Inter.



Prediction
Chievo 1-0 Bologna. A long, hard-fought game ends with a Mantovani goal off a corner kick. I don’t think I see us scoring from our offensive set, counters are going to be hard to come by, and so that leaves us setpieces.

Inter have probably one of the strongest squads in the whole of Europe and easily the most balanced squad in the Serie A. Yet when two of their heroes from last season, Esteban Cambiasso and Diego Milito, returned injured from their international friendly in the Far East, doubts began to surface.

Inter must look to cover some of the problem areas during the upcoming transfer window. This is the time of the year that clubs start looking at potential targets that might become available come January. Here is a list of positions that need backup players and a few player suggestions. We want your feedback as to who Inter and Benitez should sign for each position.  

Central Defense:

Walter Samuel and Lucio were easily the best defensive partnership in season 2009/10. Their understanding and complimentary styles of play really work well. Their backups, however, are not at the same level.

Ivan Cordoba has had a great career at Inter, but at age 34, it's safe to say that his best days are behind him. Last season was particularly bad for Cordoba, and he nearly signed to Manchester City over the summer. Things in defense get only worse as the second backup defender is even older. Marco Materazzi is all of 37 years and has shown to be very brittle when it comes to injuries.

One can argue that Christian Chivu can slot back in and play in the center, allowing Santon the chance on the left. However, for a team that is expected to be pushing on multiple fronts come February and March next year, the danger of having insufficient cover at the back is one that must be addressed sooner rather than later. The prospect of facing Barcelona at the Camp Nou with Cambiasso forced into playing defense is unthinkable for any Nerazzurri.

What options do Inter have?

There has been the suggestion that the club might bring back Andrea Ranocchia from Genoa. If Ranocchia can get enough game time and remain fit until then, he would represent a very good option. However Genoa's willingness in parting company is paramount to this deal going through.

Benitez has expressed interest in signing Bolton Wanderer's Gary Cahill in the past. This would be a risk of sorts as Cahill would be expected to make a number of transitions in a very short period of time&mdash;change of country and language, step-up to a big team, different level of expectations&mdash;and most importantly a whole new level of expectation. One has to ask, would this represent the most sensible move for Inter and Benitez?

Who would you sign for Inter if you were in Marco Branca and Rafael Benitez's shoes?

Center Forward:

Inter should consider themselves lucky to have Samuel Eto'o in such stunning form. The poor form of Diego Milito has not come to surface as much due to the exploits of Eto'o in the first couple of months this season. However, the situation as it stands now is one of great peril to Inter.

With Milito out injured, Eto'o is practically the only conventional center forward that Inter currently has. While Pandev and Biabiany can be used up-front as non-traditional forwards, it will work only as a stop-gap arrangement.

There is no hiding from the fact that Inter need a third striker. This can be a player who is younger, and ready to spend more time on the bench this season. Yet, he must be talented enough to be able to carry out the job when called upon to do so.

Think about a semi-final in the Champions League or a Milan Derby with just two points separating the Blue and Red halves of the city and the Scudetto at stake. Inter cannot risk entering a crucial part of the season with just 2 recognized strikers up-front.

One has to cast their thoughts back to the start of the season when Balotelli was sold and no backup was brought in. So who can Inter get?

The tricky part for Inter here is that they need to get in someone who will accept that he is behind Milito and Eto'o in the pecking order. Surely no one would want to disturb the established hierarchy in the team.

This probably narrows the choice down to youngsters or players who haven’t managed to hold down a first team place at their current club. It is always great to speculate about signing a Kaka or Messi-type player, but that’s just not feasible enough.

One name that immediately jumps to mind is Karim Benzema. He has just one start and five substitute appearances this season. The player is no doubt talented, and a change of club might do wonders for his form. Besides, Inter always gets the most out of Real Madrid "discards"&mdash;Cambiasso and Sneijder, anybody?

One name to throw out, given recent events&mdash;Wayne Rooney! We all know that this would probably never happen, but the prospect of Rooney and Eto'o flanking Diego Milito and Sneijder behind them as the No. 10 is just too good to imagine. Of course, Rooney is just a case of wishful thinking and the chances of it happening are slim to none.

Who do you think Inter must sign as cover up front?

Goalkeeper:

This is one position that always bewilders me when I see Inter's squad. Last season, Inter had Francesco Toldo (age 38) and Paolo Orlandoni (age 37) as their backups to shot stopper Julio Cesar.

With all due respect to Toldo&mdash;who has had a most brilliant career with Italy, Fiorentina and Inter&mdash;at age 37, it is unfair to expect him to be on his A game every single day. Given that Cesar suffered a long-term injury, Inter would have been in big trouble. Toldo retired at the end of last season leaving the club to get a replacement.

The management has gone some way in solving that issue by signing former Sampdoria number one, Luca Castellazzi. He was snapped up on a free transfer so it was a good bit of business by Branca and Co. The player that Inter should have signed though was the one who frustrated them on the opening day of Serie A: Emiliano Viviano.

Viviano is on a co-ownership deal between Inter and Bologna and is even a definite future prospect for the Italian national team. His displays for Bologna have been stellar. As a player, he looks to have the goods needed to handle the big league with Inter and all the pressure that comes with it. He would be a great understudy to Julio Cesar and Inter would be well covered in the goalkeeping department if Viviano was signed.

Areas that should not be strengthened:

It is strange that I bring this up, but I feel that there are some areas where the current squad has a lot of potential with incumbent young players that should not be disturbed with the addition of established stars.

If the club decides to spend big in these areas and get a big name player, it pretty much spells the end of any major playing time for players such as MacDonald Mariga, Philippe Coutinho, Jonathan Biabiany and many more.

The fact that Inter did not sign Javier Mascherano in the summer came as a blessing in disguise as in the shape of Mariga. The club have a future gem who will always have much more loyalty to the club than a big money signing for whom Inter is just another gig.

The same goes for Coutinho as you can feel his love for Inter. Given sufficient minutes of playing time this season under the tutelage of Wesley Sneijder, the young Brazilian will certainly grow into a fine No. 10.

These are positions where the team should risk taking a gamble. By doing so, they are showing confidence in the abilities of the youthful stars. In addition, the midfield is one area that has enough players to cover for a few injuries.

With Thiago Motta regaining fitness, Inter is regaining its best passer from the midfield. He can be looked at as a new signing as he has not featured at all this season.

Conclusion:

It is obvious that Inter won’t be able to sign enough players for all the deficient areas. However if the management does decide to make a couple of signings in January, the areas in need of fresh faces is clear for all to see.

The Italian national team has not always enjoyed a warm welcome in Florence. Indeed, it was not so many years ago that the Azzurri’s arrival was greeted by a resounding chorus which went something along the lines of: “Italy! Italy! Get Lost!” In actual fact, the words were a little more crude than that.

That was a during a friendly with Mexico back in 1993 when a simmering conflict between the Florentine support and the Italian football federation came to a head. The problem originated, you won’t be surprised to hear, in a clash with Juventus and the decision to make Fiorentina play their “home” leg of the 1990 UEFA Cup final in Avellino. Many Viola fans felt the venue had been deliberately selected due to the strength of Bianconero support in the area.

The fact that Juve lifted the cup and then signed Roberto Baggio did not help matters. There were protests in the streets and when the Nazionale came to the outskirts of Florence to train for Italia 90 they faced some angry scenes. Firenze had come to harbour a deep resentment towards the football establishment and the team which represented it around the world. It culminated in the chants of support for Mexico in that infamous friendly.

It would be another 13 years before La Nazionale would return to Florence. The Italian Football Federation snubbed the city like a parent trying to discipline an ungrateful child. The Fiorentini simply turned up their nose at a team which they felt precious little affinity towards.

And yet it was an impasse which did not do the national cause any favours. The Azzurri have never been defeated in the Renaissance city with a proud record of 17 wins and six draws from 23 matches. Few other grounds in Italy come close to being such a good luck charm.

Club Italia returned for another friendly in 2006 when the olive branch was extended and accepted. But it will be an altogether more emotional occasion when the Faroe Islands come calling on Tuesday night. For once, Fiorentina fans will have much to like about the Italian team.

Above all, it is the home debut of their former coach Cesare Prandelli. Over five years at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, he developed as close a bond as it is possible to imagine between a manager and his supporters. The atmosphere in the ground following the death of his wife, Manuela, after a lengthy illness, was among the most emotional ever witnessed in Serie A.

He also brought the Viola back from the brink of oblivion to being a major force in the top division. Slowly but surely he helped to build a side which would become a top four contender in Italy and a great entertainer in the Champions League. Not bad for a team which had only recently scrambled its way back from Serie C2, Italy’s fourth division.

Prandelli himself has not been slow to recognize how special a place Florence was for him. His departure was a somewhat hasty affair, this will be a chance to say their goodbyes properly.

However, he cannot afford to let sentiment get in the way of business. The Faroe Islands should really be defeated by a considerable margin and he has turned to some of his old employees to get the job done. Flying full-back Lorenzo De Silvestri, midfield schemer Riccardo Montolivo, and hitman Alberto Gilardino might make it seem like just another Fiorentina home game.

Even central defender Giorgio Chiellini has a Viola past while netminder Emiliano Viviano was born in nearby Fiesole and supports his local side. Even the most die-hard Ultra really can have no excuse for not feeling a connection with this Italy team.

Florence can help the Azzurri to send a message to their group rivals. After the World Cup disaster, this team is in the reconstruction process and has yet to find the players to replace some of the big names it has lost. But a resounding victory with some fine football in front of a passionate support would prove that Italy intends to return to the top of the world game as soon as possible.

It will be a poignant night for Prandelli, and there may be a few tears along the way. However, he has been in football long enough to know that the goodwill towards him is not infinite and is probably not as plentiful in other parts of the country. A convincing triumph is needed, or those jeers which the Nazionale suffered nearly 20 years ago might well return sooner rather than later.

Emilio Viviano insists he's happy with Bologna.

The young goalkeeper is regarded as a star of the future and has been linked with a big club move away.
