FILM: The NFB Mediatheque has free screenings for both Black History Month and Toronto's WinterCity Festival. All this month the NFB will have five films about the history of Canada's black community available for free at the digital viewing stations. The titles available are In the Name of the Mother and the Son, Hardwood, Black Soul/Âme Noire, Speakers for the Dead, Fields of Endless Day, and Dresden Story. For WinterCity, the NFB is screening some "Animation Favourites" tonight, including classics such as The Big Snit, The Cat Came Back, and The Sweater, and recent award-winners such as Runaway and Land of the Heads. NFB Mediatheque (150 John Street); 12–7 p.m. (Black History Month showings), 7 p.m. ("Animation Favourites"); FREE.

FILM: The CaribbeanTales Youth Film Festival 2010 will see its first full day of screenings today, having kicked off last Thursday with a gala screening of Invisible City and Hardwood. The festival is focused on presenting Africentric films to high school and university students and teachers. Today's screenings are divided into two times and themes, "Canadian Visions" (with films Where Do White People Go When The Long Weekend Comes? by Powys Dewhurst, and Nurse.Fighter.Boy by Charles Officer) and "Are You the Landlord or the Tenant of Your Life?" (with the music video I No Be No Tenant and film The Tenant, both by Lucky Ejim). William Doo Auditorium (45 Willcocks Street), 9:30 a.m. ("Canadian Visions") and 1 p.m. ("Are You the Landlord or the Tenant of Your Life?"), $10.

DEBATE: The 2010 Winter Olympics are looming, and with every Olympic Games comes controversy. The Hart House Debates Committee and Debating Club presents "Cheat or Cheated?: Gender Injustice in Sport." The debate will look at the implications behind the recent controversy surrounding South African runner Caster Semenya<</span>!>'s gold medal win at the World Championships, and the subsequent investigation into her gender. Sport sociologist Dr. Ann Travers will be present to offer her expertise on gender testing and its place in sports. University of Toronto, Hart House, Debates Room (7 Hart House Circle), 5 p.m., FREE.

HAITI: The work still isn't finished in the Haiti relief effort, and with that in mind tonight's Give Love to Haiti event will raise money for Doctors Without Borders. The event includes a motley of art, music, and dance, with plenty of opportunities to donate beyond the entry fee. Give Love to Haiti will feature hip-hop performances by Vaness Alegassi, Wolf J + OSound, and KJ, and artwork from Grace Kaya and *p for auction. Footwork Bar (425 Adelaide Street West), 6–11 p.m., $5.

The stars will be out in force tomorrow for the final day one flight in the PokerStars.net APPT Grand Final, and they'll be aiming to join the 68 players who survived day 1B of the 109 starters. The total field is at 190, with 119 players through to Friday's day two.

Starters on day 1B included many of the region's elite performers, including past APPT winners Simon Watt and Martin Rowe (last year's winner here in Sydney), ANZPT Sydney winner Paren Arzoomanian and Amanda De Cesare, who won the first series of Joe Hachem's reality television series The Poker Star. Hachem was on hand to keep an eye on his project player:

In-form Kiwi Phillip Willcocks, WSOP bracelet winner Brian Wilson, 2007 Aussie Millions fourth-place finisher Julius Colman, reigning Aussie Millions $100,000 Hold'em Challenge champ David Steicke, experienced campaigners Leo Boxell, Tino Lechich, Emanuel Seal plus young stars like Jay SEABEAST Kinkade, Kristian Lunardi, Aaron Benton, Michael Guzzardi and Brendon Rubie also suited up for day 1B.

The old master showed he still had a few tricks up his sleeve with 2000 Australasian champion Leo Boxell topping the count on 147,700, narrowly ahead of Tom Grigg (141,500), who won the Semi-Shootout Bounty title as part of the APPT Sydney preliminary schedule last week. Close behind that duo were fellow Aussies Joel Cohen (137,700) and Stewart Davidson (121,700).

Other notables who'll return include Brendon Rubie (101,700), Phillip Willcocks (95,000), David Steicke (88,200), Jackie Glazier (45,900), Michael Guzzardi (45,900), Japan's Wooka Kim (39,000), Amanda De Cesare (38,900), Kristian Lunardi (38,800), PokerStars Qualifiers Aaron Benton (34,700), Letitia Rowlands (29,300) and Tino Lechich (28,900) and APPT Auckland winner Simon Watt (27,500). Two players from last year's APPT Grand Final final table - winner Martin Rowe (22,000) and six-place finisher Frank Saffioti (42,900) will also be back on Friday.

Tony Dunst's chart-topping day 1A chip count of 104,300 has been surpassed inside four levels on day 1B of the PokerStars.net APPT Grand Final. First, it was wunderkind Brendon Rubie who broke the 100,000-barrier, and he's recently been joined by a player from the other end of the experience scale: Melbourne's Leo Boxell.

As Aussie Poker Hall of Fame member Billy "The Croc" Argyros recently quipped, "Leo has been around the poker scene since Moses came down from the mountains with a couple of concrete tablets."

In 2003, Boxell went within a whisker of winning the Aussie Millions Main Event when he was runner-up to the UK's Peter Costa. In 2000, he won the Australasian title (the predecessor to the Aussie Millions) and was crowned NZ champion in 2001. Could the veteran add the 2009 APPT Grand Final title? He's heading in the right direction after doubling up to 105,000 in chips.

We caught the action as chips were being cut down between Boxell and another opponent with the board showing [6h] [8d] [9s] [5h] [6d]; the opponent had revealed [10s] [8s] for two pair but Boxell scooped the pot with [8h] [8c] for the full boat.

Meanwhile, the "Flying Scotsman" Gordon Huntly was eliminated by Michael Guzzardi after running his [kc] [qc] into an opponent's [ac] [jc] on a board that read [10c] [9c] [7c] [9s] [5h] - second nuts into the nuts - ouch.

New Zealand's Phillip Willcocks is shooting for yet another final table, having placed second in the ANZPT Queenstown Main Event and eighth in last month's APPT Cebu finale. He also recently doubled up to 70,000 in chips after managing to crack aces with A-6 by flopping trip sixes.

And despite his good form coming off his win in the $2200 APPT Sydney NLHE/PLO Event two nights ago, Minh Nguyen is struggling on just 10,000 in chips after he ran pocket kings into an opponent's aces with the board of [5h] [5c] [qc] [8h] [2h] improving neither hand. It didn't help that the dealer exposed a king during the initial deal.

Play is underway in the brand new Star City poker room on day 1B of the PokerStars.net APPT Grand Final, with more of the region's biggest names in action today.

Leading the field is 2008 APPT Grand Final winner and Sydney's own Martin Rowe. The million-dollar man has kept a relatively low profile on the national tournament scene over the past 12 months, so it's great to see him back to defend his crown.

Winner of the first series of Joe Hachem's reality TV series The Poker Star, Amanda De Cesare is also playing today. De Cesare is coming off a stunning victory in last week's Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series III Main Event in Melbourne, underlining the improvement in her game under the tutelage of the PokerStars.net Team Australia Pro and 2005 WSOP Main Event winner.

Others in action today include PokerStars.net Team Asia Pro Celina Lin, 2009 PokerStars.net ANZPT Sydney winner Paren Arzoomanian, 2009 APPT Auckland champion Simon Watt, 2009 APPT Cebu final table participant Phillip Willcocks, 2005 WSOP $5k Pot Limit Hold'em winner Brian Wilson, "The Flying Scotsman" Gordon Huntly and high stakes guru David Steicke.

Top Aussies Tino Lechich, Leo Boxell, Julius Colman (fresh from two wins at the Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series III), Jai Kemp (fifth in this event two years ago), Sheldon Mayer, Terry Gardiner, Australia's number one ranked online player Jay SEABEAST Kinkade, Kristian Lunardi, Dennis Huntly, Aaron Benton, Michael Guzzardi, Brendan Rubie, Tom Rafferty and Emanuel Seal.

There's also a strong contingent of female players including Japan's Wooka Kim, Jackie Glazier, PokerStars Qualifier Letitia Rowlands and Hong Kong's Sarah Lee.

It didn't take long for the first elimination - it was France versus Spain with the pocket queens of Frenchman Jean-Claude Baillon cracked by the flopped set of jacks landed by Asier Aberro.
