Most of the museums in the world are classified as "small" but you would never know it from the disproportionate notice and publicity their bigger museum "cousins" receive.   I've written before about how funders and professional museum organizations might give more "aid and comfort" to those small(er) institutions that don't usually end up on the AAM or ASTC or ACM letterhead.

ExhibiTricks has also previously featured a few exemplary projects from "smaller" places that haven't always shown up in the NY Times or been splashed around the Twitter-verse:

• The LEGO® Millyard Project at the SEE Science Center that combined community volunteers and over 3 million LEGO bricks to recreate and help tell the story of the historic Amoskeag Millyard.

• The Play Project at the Providence Children's Museum that got their local communities thinking about the "power of play" as well as the museum as a resource for playing and play resources.

• As well as several "small" community-minded art exhibits like the White Plains project or the work of the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

So, I'd like to do my "small" (natch!) part to highlight some more interesting and creative projects coming out from small(er) museums and organizations.  If you know of such Un(der)sung Projects, please leave a message I can follow up on in the "Comments Section" below, or send me an email message directly briefly describing the project or exhibition. 

I'll follow-up with postings here on ExhibiTricks (and my Twitter and Facebook streams) about these "Smaller Is Better" efforts in order to provide a little recognition, but also to, hopefully, provide awareness and encouragement for other small places doing great stuff during these tough times.

There is no question that mobile apps are de rigueur and like other mobile devices users, life science researchers are beginning to regularly use them! After all, any innovation that can make the long hours spent doing laboratory research, easier, less time-consuming and enjoyable are likely to be welcomed by most researchers.

According to Alex Hodgson, one of the founders of the antibody review site called BioHub Online “mobile apps for science-types are popping up everywhere.” These apps range from lab timers, to mobile notebooks and science journals.

In the world of the Internet, the rapid growth and exponential use of digital medias leads to the emergence of virtual environments namely digital ecosystems composed of multiple and independent entities such as  individuals, organizations, services, software and applications sharing one or several missions and focusing on the interactions and inter-relationships among them. The digital ecosystem exhibits self-organizing environments, thanks to the re-combination and evolution of its "digital components", in which resources provided by each entity are properly conserved, managed and used. The underlying resources mainly comprehend data management, innovative services, computational intelligence and self-organizing platforms.

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of digital ecosystems and their characteristics, they are highly complex to study and design. This also leads to a poor understanding as to how managing resources will empower digital ecosystems to be innovative and value-creating. The application of Information Technologies has the potential to enable the understanding of how  entities request resources and ultimately interact to create benefits and added-values, impacting business practices and knowledge. These technologies can be improved through novel techniques, models and methodologies for fields such as data management, web technologies,  networking, security, human-computer interactions, artificial intelligence, e-services and self-organizing systems to support the establishment of digital ecosystems and manage their resources.

The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems (MEDES) aims to develop and bring together a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry
interested in exploring the manifold challenges and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and how current approaches and technologies can be evolved and adapted to this end. Submissions must be in an electronic form as PDF format and should be uploaded using the conference website.

Submissions should be at most 8 ACM single-space printed pages. Papers that fail to comply with length limit will be rejected. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 peer reviewers. Selection criteria will
include: relevance, significance, impact, originality, technical soundness, and quality of presentation.
Preference will be given to submissions that take strong or challenging positions on important emergent topics
related to Digital Ecosystems. At least one author should attend the conference to present the paper.

The conference Proceedings will be published by ACM and indexed by the ACM Digital Library.

In the meantime, I thought I'd tweak one of the Children Museum world's sacred cows --- The Grocery Store exhibit, by adapting one of my favorite posts below.  Enjoy!

No More Grocery Store Exhibits!



Recently, I threw a chunk or rhetorical "red meat" to a crowd I was speaking with by saying that I'd be quite happy if I never saw another kid-sized grocery store exhibit in a children's museum ever again. Given the raised eyebrows and open-mouthed stares from many in the audience I thought I'd share the top five reasons why I dislike grocery store exhibits:

1) Grocery store exhibits are the anthithesis of "green design."
Dumping a truckload (literally!) of fake plastic produce and grocery items onto shelves and into bins sets a tremendously bad example for sustainable exhibit design practice.

2) Grocery store exhibits are unfair to museum floor staff and volunteers.
These galleries might more accurately be called "entropy exhibits" since the main activity for young visitors seems to be to madly rush about pulling every facsimile grocery store item off the shelves, shoving them into the miniature shopping carts or onto the phony checkout conveyor and then leaving. The poor floor staff and volunteers assigned to this area then, Sisyphus-like,
engage in resorting the mess left behind again and again as new visitors enter the mini store.

3) Grocery store exhibits are just creatively lazy.
When I visit a museum with one of these areas, I instinctively think, "well, they must have run out of good exhibit ideas." Despite all the high-minded rationalizations --- "the kids are learning about food groups" or "our grocery store shows visitors where milk and tomatoes actually come from..." I say if that was really what you wanted to get visitors thinking about, there are only about a dozen more entertaining and interesting ways to address those particular topics in an exhibition format than riding the tired mini grocery store warhorse once again. (Although if food groups or farm to store topics were high on your exhibit"wish list" to begin with, I'm not sure I'd want to visit with my kids in the first place.)

4) Grocery store exhibits send at least as many unintended messages as intended messages.
I'd really rather not send the message that it's alright to tear up an exhibit area and make a mess and then leave it to other people to clean up, or that shopping for food is some sort of wacky leisure activity instead of a necessity. If we really thought carefully about the ideas that kids are leaving grocery store exhibits with instead of blithely, and automatically, assuming that frenetic activity in an exhibition area equals "fun" or "learning" we might try out some different ideas.

5) Grocery store exhibits are the worst sort of craven fundraising ploys.
One of the most common reasons I hear directors defend their choice of a kid-sized grocery store exhibit is "We can easily get a sponsor for this." Believe me, after nearly 30 years in the museum business, I understand the need to fundraise, but are you trying to create unique, amazing exhibit spaces, or just sell chunks of museum real estate?

Unfortunately most museum "sacred cows" come from just the sort of "well this is the way we've always done things" or "I've heard it works amazingly well at Museum X" sort of thinking.

We at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM http://www.acm.org/ ), would like to move on to recruiting some practitioner reviewers for the Cloud Computing Tech Pack which will probably be ready for review by the end of April/beginning of May.  

Tech Packs are integrated learning packages on a particular technical area geared especially for Practitioners (software developers, engineers). These packages are put together by a Committee who selects materials and drafts the annotation (on why these resources are important for practitioners). The core materials for the Tech Pack are an annotated bibliography built around resources from the ACM Digital Library (magazines, journals, conference proceedings, etc.), multimedia content - videos, podcasts, webinars, etc., as well as the ACM online book and course collections offered through Books24x7, Safari, and Element K, respectively. In addition, non-ACM materials may be included as well (e.g., free courseware, etc.). A group of practitioners will be asked to review the selections in the Tech Packs based on the following criteria:  

· Do the selected resources in the Tech Pack provide you with knowledge you can use on your job? If not, why not, and which ones?

· Are the resources in the Tech Pack practitioner-oriented? If not, which ones aren't and why not?

· Do the annotations about the resources adequately describe why they are important to practitioners? Is more or revised annotation necessary?

· Do the selected resources give you a good understanding of the topic(s) covered? What level of understanding are these resources geared for - novice, intermediate, master?

· Do these resources provide you with an understanding of the topic(s) not easily found elsewhere?

· Are there any other resources (ACM and non-ACM) - articles, multimedia content (videos, podcasts, online books/courses) - that you would recommend including in this Tech Pack?

Since the concept of Tech Packs is currently evolving, do you have any suggestions for the specific Tech Pack Committee or ACM's Professional Development Committee?

"The COSPAR Colloquium on Solar-Terrestrial Magnetic Activity and Space Environment (STMASE) was held in the National Astronomy Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) in Beijing, China in September 10-12, 2001. The meeting was focused on five areas of the solar-terrestrial magnetic activity and space environment studies, including study on solar surface magnetism; solar magnetic activity, dynamical response of the heliosphere; space weather prediction; and space environment exploration and monitoring. A hot topic of space research, CMEs, which are widely believed to be the most important phenomenon of the space environment, is discussed in many papers. Other papers show results of observational and theoretical studies toward better understanding of the complicated image of the magnetic coupling between the Sun and the Earth, although little is still known little its physical background. Space weather prediction, which is very important for a modern society expanding into out-space, is another hot topic of space research. However, a long way is still to go to predict exactly when and where a disaster will happen in he space. In that sense, there is much to do for space environment exploration and monitoring. The meeting was attended by 18 participants from 10 States and four international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). The meeting was advised on the elements of Amendment 72 to Annex 3—Meteorological Service for International Air Navigation and WMO Technical Regulations (C.3.1) concerning the provision of information to aircraft in flight of the accidental release of radioactive material into the atmosphere. The group noted that in order to meet the Annex 3 requirements, there was no need to change the current Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMC) procedures for response to nuclear and radiological accidents.

The annual global meeting of ACI was combined for 2001 with the North American regional meeting, resulting in participation by over 2 000 delegates, including high-level representatives of airports and international organizations worldwide. Keynote presentations were made by the Deputy Director General of the World Trade Organization, who advocated broad application of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) to air transport in general and to airport services in particular, and by the President of the Council of ICAO, whose address was circulated to representatives. The President, inter alia, cautioned against wholesale application of the GATS to international air transport, referring in particular to the obligations of States under Article 28 of the Chicago Convention regarding the provision of airports and air navigation facilities. General sessions were held on 10 September on “Airport and Airline Alliances: The Power of Networks” and “Airport Commercialization: Thriving on Change”. Events on 11 and 12 September were severely curtailed and then cancelled in the light of the terrorist attacks in the United States.

SUPPLEMENTAL

The Caux Round Table originated in 1986 out of a desire to reduce trade tensions between Japan and the West, including Europe and North America [i.e. Trilateral
Commission]. In the early 90s, the Caux Round Table became aware of the *Minnesota Principles*, a set of ethical guidelines developed by leaders of global business enterprises who were members of the Minnesota Center for Corporate Responsibility. Mr. Kaku and other members of the CRT saw in these principles the spirit of *kyosei*, and encouraged the Round Table to enrich, embrace, and share them as the Caux Principles for Business. Facilitated by Kenneth Goodpaster, the Caux Principles in their present form were drafted at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis with input from Japan, Europe, and the U.S. The CRT at its annual meeting in 1994 officially accepted them. Denny pointed out that the Caux Principles were in many ways principles of servant leadership, "converting sinners by showing that saints have more fun!" (He also mentioned that Steve Young had done an essay illustrating the compatibility of the Caux Principles with the great world religions and ethical traditions.)

By the mid-to-late 90s, said Denny, it was clear that the CRT Principles represented a widely-known commitment to business responsibility -- responsibility not only for (1) the creation of wealth, but also (2) the equitable distribution of wealth, and (3) the support of social sector organizations that are dedicated to the common good.

"Might we not hope," Denny asked, "that eventually the spirit of the Caux Principles could help ameliorate some of the violent protest against globalization witnessed in Seattle, Washington and Genoa, Italy?"

Our first session centered on a bold vision for the Caux Round Table, a direction not entertained before in its history. More than avoiding trade friction, more even than promotion of principled business leadership, we were being invited to contribute to a new economic climate. Global business must seek prosperity, yes, but prosperity anchored in justice and the common good.

Pope John Paul II, in his recent remarks to President George W. Bush, mentioned the *opportunity* that globalization presents to the World community -- so long as *responsibility* goes hand in hand with globalization.

Edward G. Schuh, Professor in International Trade and Investment Policy at the University of Minnesota: "We should convert the IMF into a central bank of the world, and 'SDRs' (special drawing rates) should increase at a constant rate."

Bernard Lietaer, Professor of International Finance at the University of Louvain, offered a PowerPoint presentation based on his paper. His proposal was that global corporations embrace a long-term parallel currency, the "Terra," which would support their ecological, economic, and social bottom lines so frequently heard of today. "Monetary rewards today systematically discount the future," he said, "and both regulation and moral suasion have a hard time of it when they are up against financial incentives." The creation of a "Terra alliance" would allow companies to avoid currency fluctuations while encouraging longer-term thinking with a 3-4% demurrage.

Raymond Baker, Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington, D.C., reflected on the presentations of both Schuh and Lietaer, suggesting that both seemed to be moving toward global monetary exchanges, one with "SDRs" and the other with "Terras."

As the group began to re-assemble after the break at about 2:00 pm, news began to trickle into the room about an airliner crashing into the World Trade Center in New York. There was some confusion and one or two members of the group used international mobile phones to try to get more information. The true magnitude of the events in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania would not fully be known by the participants until later in the afternoon, at the conclusion of the meeting. Uncertain of the details but aware a great tragedy was occurring, participants stood for a moment of silence and prayer to reflect on the violent harm that had been done by unknown hands.

The nightmare of terrorism in the United States shocked the civilized world on 11 September 2001. Our lives changed as CRT completed its meeting in London, and our lives would never be the same. Indeed, global business -- symbolized by the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center -- would never be the same. Perhaps we could hope that a new outpouring of unity and solidarity among nations would draw some common good from this terrible atrocity.. And perhaps we could hope that the new global vision for the Caux Round Table -- born at this meeting -- would be part of that common good. [source CAUX ROUND TABLE]

The GSM Association has adopted the "One Voice Initiative" as a way of delivering voice and messaging services for fourth-generation Long-Term Evolution (LTE) services. One Voice is based on IP Multimedia Subsystems and will provide a standard for voice and text messaging interconnection and international roaming on 4G networks, just as carriers now support 2G and 3G interworking.

The GSMA’s Voice over LTE (VoLTE) initiative has the backing of more than 40 organizations from across the mobile ecosystem.

Mobile operators supporting the initiative include 3 Group, AT&T, Bell Canada, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom/T-Mobile, KDDI, mobilkom austria, MTS, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, SKT, SoftBank, Telecom Italia, Telecom New Zealand, Telefónica, Telenor, TeliaSonera, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone.

Acme Packet announced today three new solutions to help service providers with simplifying and scaling IMS, Rich Communications Suite and next-generation network service delivery networks.

The Net-Net SIP Multimedia-xpress (SMX) offers a simple single system RCS IMS-equivalent or NGN delivery platform delivering SIP services like basic voice to RCS services like enhanced address book, messaging and content sharing for small roll-outs. Tagging on to that release are the Net-Net 4500 Session-aware Load Balancer and Net-Net SBC Cluster which help scale the Net-Net SMX solution or any other Acme Packet access SBC deployment to 2 million subscribers from a single IP address for SIP signaling. Lastly, the Net-Net Route Manager Central manages routes within Acme Packet's Open Session Routing (OSR) architecture--up to 2 million routes per SBC.

Joe McGarvey, principal analyst, IP Services Infrastructure for Current Analysis, described the new solutions "as fast-track and cost-efficient options for delivering voice, RCS and other SIP-based communication services."

Mark Wood's role in Scottish News Consortium puts him in direct competition with old employer

Former ITN chief executive Mark Wood has been appointed chairman of a consortium bidding to run a regional news pilot in Scotland, putting him in direct competition with his old employer in a battle for public money.

Wood will chair the Scottish News Consortium, an alliance of newspaper groups DC Thomson, the Herald & Times and Johnston Press and television producer Mentorn Scotland, a subsidiary of Welsh company Tinopolis.

The consortium is going head to head with the current news provider STV, which has teamed up with ITN and the radio group Bauer to form the Scottish News Network.

The winning bidder will produce the news bulletins on Scotland's channel 3 licensee, STV, as well as providing multimedia news, using public money left over from the digital switchover help scheme.

"The consortium will transform the way television and broadband news is covered in Scotland and create a new model for partnership between newspapers and broadcasters," said Wood, who was ITN's chief executive between 2003 and 2009 and was previously editor-in-chief at Reuters.

"Our ground-breaking plans for a truly multiplatform and interactive TV/web news service and this is a dramatically new way of engaging Scottish viewers with national regional and community news."

The two rival consortiums are in Glasgow today to meet the independent selection panel that will choose a winner by 25 March.

They will also answer questions from members of the public, following similar public meetings in Cardiff and Newcastle last week to discuss the other pilot regions, Wales and the Tyne Tees and Border region.

An earlier bid from Trinity Mirror, publisher of the Daily Record, and production company MacMillan Media to cover just the south of Scotland did not make it to the final stage of the process.

The iPad is still a few months away from actual release, but it already has publishers scrambling to be in the right place when the revolution comes. First, Amazon gave in to Macmillan's bid to raise prices on their own store, and now HarperCollins is putting the pressure on that same site to raise eBook prices from $9.99 up to $14.99 or higher. Amazon finds itself in between a rock and an iPad -- if they don't give in to publishers' demands, they could find themselves abandoned for an exclusive Apple deal, but if they do raise prices, sales will start dropping even before the iPad appears. Jobs predicted about this much last week in an interview with Walt Mossberg, saying that publishers would run afoul of the Amazon store, and Jobs would be more than happy to pick them up in iBooks.

But the real question is: how much will Apple charge? Historically, Jobs has been pretty antagonistic on pricing against content providers, only recently giving in to the first price increase in the history of iTunes. At the Apple event the other week, Jobs said on stage that prices on the Kindle and the iPad for books would be "the same," so while fleeting images of the iPad showed bestsellers at around $10 (which is what Amazon charges), it's possible that Jobs would go with the $14.99 price to woo publishers over to his side.

It'll be an interesting battle -- when the iTunes music store first opened, there basically were no strong competitors in terms of other online music retailers. With the iBooks service, Jobs and the iPad are wading into already populated waters. And while Amazon is feeling the heat of the iPad even before it's on store shelves, odds are that they're not going to go down without an eventual fight.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that Apple announced the advent of the iPad on the 27th: a multifunction tablet device targeting portability and ease of use in both creating and experiencing multimedia content. The Apple content model has already proposed to change multiple online markets (with the Amazon/MacMillan dustup over e-book pricing only the first in many expected shakeups); how do you think the iPad will affect us as animators? Con l'iPad, il nuovo tablet della Apple, il numero uno Steve Jobs gioca sui prezzi oltreché sull'innovazione tecnologica e l'eleganza del design. Meno di 500 dollari, 499 per l'esattezza per il modello di base: il nuovo oggetto "cult" della casa di Cupertino, il tablet multimediale destinato a rivoluzionare il mondo della stampa e dell'editoria, mette già fuori mercato un concorrente di spicco. Cioè il "Kindle Dx" (quello più grande) della Amazon che ha lo stesso formato, 9,7 pollici, viene venduto a 10 dollari in meno, è stato appena lanciato sul mercato internazionale, ma che è soltanto un lettore digitale in bianco e nero. La Hewlett-Packard, proprio ieri, ha diffuso su YouTube un video in cui cerca di correre ai ripari annunciando il lancio di un gadget molto simile entro quest'anno.

L'iPad, presentato in pompa magna da uno Steve Jobs dimagrito ma in gran forma al Yerba Buena Center di San Francisco, assomiglia a un grande iPhone ed è un oggetto a metà strada tra uno smartphone e un laptop. Il Ceo della Apple, applaudito a più riprese, lo ha definito in questi termini: «La nostra tecnologia più avanzata in un oggetto magico e rivoluzionario ad un prezzo incredibile».

Le versioni dell'iPad sono sei in tutto, tre delle quali con la possibilità di un collegamento cellulare in 3G aperto e senza abbonamento (la At&t; offre un collegamento illimitato a 30 dollari mensili), con le nuove carte Gsm MicroSim. Il modello con una memoria (flash) di 16GB verrà venduto a 499 dollari, che salgono a 599 per quello con 32GB e a 699 per quello con 64GB. Email The Apple iPad offers a very nice presentation layout, and a large on-board QWERTY keyboard will appear when you need to enter text. Will the iPad beat a laptop keyboard? The iPad Keyboard Dock will be available as an accessory, offering a full-size traditional keyboard for those who need that. Photos Apple's way of presenting photos is already highly acclaimed. Especially taking flick scrolling to this new level where it can be combined with a larger screen real estate, should really give you the feeling of an "iPhone on steroids". We're sure it's going to be a whole lot easier to bring out old memories when friends comes to visit after the Apple iPad hits store shelves than before. Showing photos on a laptop is fine, but the Apple iPad will basically act like an advanced photo frame in that regard. There's likely no smartphone or laptop that'll be able to beat that experience. Video & Music Videos on the Apple iPad will obviously be a challenge when it comes to power. With built-in access to the iTunes store, as well as YouTube and YouTube HD streaming being available, it'll be easy to throw your smartphone or laptop away in favor of the Apple iPad. You can play movies, TV shows and music videos. When it comes to music playback, we guess playing those music videos will be the most alluring part here, as the iPad would obviously not beat the iPhone when it comes to portability and battery life. Games A large part of the iPhone apps out there are games and the Apple iPad will run any iPhone app out-of-box without modifications. To take advantage of the iPad's large screen, one can also double the pixels on-the-fly and run apps in full screen mode. Popular iPhone developers will offer optimized iPad apps pretty quickly to take full advantage of the larger screen though, and an Apple iPad Developer SDK was released today to ensure that every developer out there can offer optimized iPad apps. The app store will be an integral part of the iPad. Some high-def games will be available from companies such as Electronics Arts from day one. EA's Need for Speed Shift will for instance offer a range of new touch controls besides taking advantage of the obvious graphics power and display technology hidden in the Apple iPad. eBooks & Newspapers Of course, eReaders will never look the same after you've seen what type of content the Apple iPad can offer. New York Times have created a showcase of its newspaper, which will for sure become a popular service on the iPad. In stead of holding a static newspaper in front of you, you can simply load up New York Times on the iPad, boasting multimedia such as in-line video streaming. Yes, you read that right. It's that simple to reinvigorate newspapers, as long as you have the world's largest gadget maker enabling it, of course. If you're an independent sketch artist, Apple will of course also provide you with an application called Brushes. We guess its potential is self-explanatory. There's also a new iBook Store, which will basically compete directly with certain other eBook stores out there. Apple has partnered up with Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan and Hachette Book Group, and eBooks will be available in the ePub format. Steve Jobs has also pushed his army to create iWorks for Apple iPad, and will sell it for $10 each (Pages, Numbers and Keynote). A calendar for scheduling is also available out-of-box. Apple iPad Specifications The Apple iPad is 0.5 inches thick (just as slim as the iPhone) and weighs in at 1.5 pounds. It sports a 9.7-inch IPS display and offers "full capacitive multi-touch". Compared to TFT displays, IPS displays require a brighter backlight, subsequently drawing more power. In return, Apple iPad users will get a wider viewing angle (178 degrees to be exact) and accurate color reproduction. The Apple iPad is the first consumer device to take advantage of an IPS display (LG.Philips is likely the brain behind this screen). The Apple iPad will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions. It also boasts 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR connectivity, speaker, microphone and an Apple 30-pin port. Apple promises a battery life of up to 10 hours and over a month of standby time. The bomb shell as far as specifications is concerned: The 1GHz Apple A4 chip. It's an ARM SoC with an integrated graphics processing unit (GPU) manufactured by P.A. Semi. Apple acquired P.A. Semi back in April 2008, and this is the first Apple chip to appear. We guess it's just a matter of time before Apple's iPhone will be powered by an Apple chip as well. In other words, companies like Qualcomm and Intel doesn't seem to get much fun out of Apple's new mobile adventure in the future. Price and availability The Apple iPad Wi-Fi models will start shipping worldwide in late March 2010 ($500 for 16GB version, $600 for 32GB, and $700 for 64GB). The Apple iPad 3G models will start shipping in the U.S. and selected countries in April 2010 ($630 for 16GB version, $730 for 32GB, and $830 for 64GB). International pricing and worldwide availability will be announced at a later date. Apple expects to have international carrier deals ready by June 2010. The Apple iPad 3G models (7.2Mbps HSDPA) will be sold with an unlocked micro SIM card, but Apple has a new prepaid data plan deal with AT&T; Wireless: $30 per month for unlimited data or $15 per month for up to 250MB. After weeks of increasing hype, cash-flush hardware giant Apple Inc. finally took the wraps off of its wildly anticipated tablet computer at a San Francisco press event. As rumored, the device will be called the iPad, and it will resemble a large iPhone or iPod Touch. It will have a half-inch thick, 9.7-inch capacitive multi-touch screen and will weigh just 1.5 pounds.

According to GameSpot sibling site CNET, the iPad's heart is an all-new 1GHz processor that places the CPU, graphics, and memory all on a single chip. The device has Bluetooth and a compass built in, and its battery life is around 10 hours--with over a month of standby.

The iPad will use the 802.11n wireless standard and will have several models with 3G mobile-network data connectivity. AT&T will offer two prepaid monthly plans--$15 for 250MB of data and $30 for unlimited data--with no contractual obligation. However, unlike the iPhone, the iPad will be unlocked, allowing users to use micro-SIM cards from other providers.

The non-3G, Wi-Fi-only iPad will "begin shipping" in 60 days (March 28) with three models: $499 with 16GB of flash memory, $599 with 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. In 90 days (April 27), the 3G models will go on sale for $629 (16GB), $729 (32GB), and $829 (64GB). Apple will also sell a dock to display the tablet like a standard monitor and allow a keyboard to be attached to it.

iPad's user interface resembles that of Apple's wildly popular iPhone--and its display rotates vertically or horizontally, courtesy of an accelerometer. Data entry is done courtesy of a pop-up keyboard that occupies half the screen, like on an iPhone. It will allow Web browsing and will have some elements of Apple's popular MacBook line of laptops, including a version of iPhoto.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs bragged that the iPad will have a "built-in iPod" and demonstrated its modified form of iTunes, which will offer the same robust multimedia playback. It will let users buy music, TV shows, and movies as they would via an iPhone or iPod Touch. He then showed off its HD video capabilities with clips of last year's Star Trek reboot and Up, the animated feature film from Pixar, the studio that Jobs owned before Disney bought it in 2006.

Gamers wondering if their library of iPod titles will work on the iPad can rest assured. Senior vice president of iPhone software Scott Forstall took the stage to announce that all App Store programs--including games--can run on the iPad unmodified. iPhone apps' pixels can be doubled to fit the iPad screen with the touch of a button, and new apps can be designed with the iPad screen in mind. A software developer kit for the device is available as of today.

While Forstall demonstrated several games, he also brought Gameloft senior business development manager Mark Hickey onstage to show off a first-person shooter designed specifically for the iPad. Its control scheme was similar to that of existing iPhone shooters such as Doom Resurrection, relying on the touch screen and accelerometer for movement and targeting. According to tech blog Engadget, Gameloft's title is called Nova (not to be confused with the existing iPhone game Nova Run), and it will be available later this year.

After Hickey took his leave, Electronic Arts' vice president of worldwide studios, Travis Boatman, took the stage to show off an iPad version of Need for Speed: Shift. He claimed that converting it from the iPhone to the iPad took "a very short amount of time," indicating that iPad versions of EA iPhone games could be incoming en masse. A Wall Street Journal report from last week said that EA was partnering with Apple to promote gaming on the then-unnamed iPad.

In addition to unveiling the iPad and its gaming initiatives, Jobs showed off iBooks, the tablet's format for electronic books. The service will let users buy books almost exactly as they would songs or videos from iTunes and adjust fonts and font sizes on the fly. The service already has the support of the five major publishing houses: Penguin, HarperCollins, Hachette, Macmillan, and Simon & Schuster. Jobs also said that the service would be offering textbooks at a later date.

Finally, Jobs reflected on how far Apple has come since its founding in 1976. After flashing a black-and-white photo of a comparatively cherubic younger self along with Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, Jobs touted the company's $15.6 billion in first-quarter revenues. In fact, by revenues, Apple is now the "largest mobile devices company in the world," said Jobs. He defined mobile devices as iPods, iPhones, MacBooks--and now, the iPad.

The iPad's iBook application Source: Apple.com Among other talents, Apple's new iPad appears to be a unique and innovative e-book reader. But what we don't know yet about its e-reading capabilities make it hard to judge how it may stack up against standalone e-book readers like the Kindle. The demonstration video that's now streaming from Apple's website shows—four minutes in—an elegantly designed e-book interface. Your library is held within a bookshelf image. You touch the cover you want to begin reading. Alternately, a press on the bookshelf itself prompts it to rotate, James-Bond-style, to reveal the iBook store on its flip side. During the Apple news conference, the major publishers Penguin, Harper Collins, Simon and Schuster, and Macmillan were revealed as iBook partners. But missing from the list, at least for now, are such major publishers as Scholastic, home to the Harry Potter books, and Random House. The only hint at pricing was the fact that "True Compass," the Ted Kennedy autobiography ordered during the press event was priced at $14.99. That's notably higher than the $9.99 price that's become standard on other e-book readers for such best-sellers. It's as yet unclear if iPad books will have multimedia or other enhancements to help justify their higher price, as was rumored. Based on the video, the page-turn navigation on the touchscreen (above) appears impressively fast. Pages turn with a swipe. There's no black screen, as with other e-book readers. Instead, as each page turns, a virtual representation of it, complete with the page curl, passes over the new page below. It's dazzling, though it's as yet hard to tell if the effect would prove pleasing or distracting in page after page of reading. It's also impossible to judge from the video how the iPad's text will compare in quality to the best dedicated readers. We do know, however, that LCD screens typically render type with less crispness than the e-ink screens used on e-book readers. Also, the iPad's text rendering wasn't mentioned at the press event, and the video makes no quality claims about it, which may be telling. Pricewise, the iPad is, as expected, more expensive than the leading 10-inch dedicated reader out there, the Kindle DX. Where the DX costs $489, including unlimited 3G access, the iPad will start at $629 for the 3G version, plus $30 a month for the 3G plan. However, you can skip the data charges by getting a WiFi-only iPad at $130 less. And the device is, of course, far more versatile than the DX and its ilk. The innovation and elegance of the iPad's e-book reader makes me eager to get my hands on the device, literally, to see how it really compares with the best standalone devices for e-reading. 1:03: The man is on stage, ready to unveil a "magical" product. But first, some updates about the business. $15.6B in revenue Q1 2010, claiming #1 mobile device company in the world. By the way, connection issues here, so I'll be a little slow. Check out our friends at Gizmodo for more live coverage.

1:09: Steve: First to market with laptops in 1991, then "reinvented the phone" with the iPhone. Everyone uses a laptop or a smartphone now. Is there room for a third category of device in the middle? Third category will have to be far better at doing "some key things."

Some people have thought that's a netbook. Problem is, netbooks aren't better at anything. Applause.

1:12: It's the iPad. Going through basic functionalities now-- browsing, email, photos, iTunes music--everything the iPhone does. Text entry is with an "almost life size" soft keyboard.

1:15: Steve's relaxing in his chair demoing the iPad. Currently going through the browser, which seems to function exactly like the mobile Safari on the iPhone. Nothing new yet.

1:18: Now, email. Again, basically the same as iPhone, but with a paneled interface that's more like Mail on the Mac. Typing, Steve holds the tablet on his knees and uses both hands to type on the soft keyboard.

1:19: Photos app looks like a hybrid of iPhone photos and iPhoto on the Mac. Seeing a trend here?

1:21: Get the feeling Steve is sandbagging here going through the basics. iTunes is here, described as a "built in iPod." More of a hybrid mobile/desktop feel, taking advantage of the increased screen realestate.

1:25: People are applauding Google Street View on the iPad's maps app, but it's exactly the same as the iPhone implementation--just bigger.

1:27: Steve watching Up.

1:29: Specs time: .5 inches thin, 1.5 pounds, 9.7-inch IPS display. Interestingly, it runs on a custom chip Apple built itself, the Apple A4 running at 1 GHZ. 16, 32, 64 GB solid state storage. 802.11n hi-fi, bluetooth. "We've been able to achieve 10 hours of battery life. I can take a flight from SF to Tokyo and watch video the whole way." Plus, 1 month of standby.

1:33: Scott Forstall is up talking about the App Store on the iPad. It runs "virtually every" App Store app out of the box--either in a black box at native iPhone resolution, which doesn't look too appealing, or resolution upscaled to full screen (with a slight loss of image quality, one would assume). Hard to tell on the big screen.

To take full advantage of the larger iPad screen, developers will have to re-write their applications with larger UI elements. Developers can begin modifying their apps with an SDK available today.

1:38: Now we're seeing demos from iPhone developers who have gotten a headstart on developing apps for the iPad. Gameloft is showing a first-person shooter that looks pretty impressive. Lots of touch controls for fighting. Clearly, an emphasis will be on games.

1:40: Now the New York Times: Been developing a demo app for the past three weeks. Why use an iPad app over the NYT webpage Steve demoed just a few minutes ago?

1:42: NYT app is looking to capture the essence of the printed product with similar layout and design, with video and digital content piped in.

1:44: Now Brushes, the popular iPhone painting app. This could be good.

1:46: Brushes looks pretty excellent--as you can imagine, more screen real estate will make finger painting easier and more natural. A nifty playback feature watches your composition go from a blank canvas to finished, each stroke at a time. Neat.

1:47: EA is demo'ing Need For Speed. Using the accelerometer to steer and working your hands around to do things like shift gears and change the camera view might be kind of tricky:

1:51: The MLB app looks pretty great with the expanded screen as well. Full-screen game simulations with picture-in-picture for videos.

1:54: Now here's what many were waiting for: iBooks, an e-reader app with--yes--a built-in book store. iTunes for books. Publishers Penguin, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette have signed on.

1:57: Steve's hyping hard the benefits of reading books on a color screen (but, still backlit--get ready for some eyestrain?). Photos look great, pageturns are instant and animated, and multimedia can be integrated inline. It uses the e-pub format, and textbooks are in the works.

1:58: iWork is also coming to the iPad. Phil Schiller is onstage to demo what he and Steve are both pretty excited about, surprisingly. Keynote, Pages and Numbers have all been ported for presentations, word processing and...spreadsheets! Office work on an iPad? I guess!

2:02: Some nifty looking multitouch gestures have been added--tap presentation slides into a bundle and move them to replace--photo masking and resizing is also touchable and fairly intuitive-looking. Is this the future of the desktop Mac we're seeing?

2:05: Phil just said Pages' formatting ruler is the "most beautiful ruler you've ever seen in an application. OK!

They must be pretty confident with the iPad's keyboard to include a full-fledged word processor.

2:09: Phil is holding the iPad with one hand and pecking at the keyboard with the other. Looks kind of awkward, but we'll have to see for ourselves. What must surely be the iWork team sitting in the front is loving this demo. Wild applause.

2:11: Each productivity app will be $10 in the App Store.

2:12: Steve's back filling in some more details. Full sync with iTunes via USB, just like the iPhone.

2:13: Interesting: iPads will be available either with wi-fi alone or with wi-fi plus 3G. And here's the pricing: 250MB per month for $14.99, unlimited for $30. All through AT&T, which elicited some groans in the crowd. But this is nice: no contract necessary, and cancellation can be done anytime.

2:17: Pricing. Much lower than expected at $499 for 16GB and no 3G, but with lots of different pricing options. Lots of applause. They're available in two months.

2:22: Now we're talking accessories. As many expected, there will be a keyboard. And, another industry killed by Apple: digital photo frames. When in its dock, the iPad can show your photos.

Apple have unveiled the iPad, their long-awaited and much-rumored tablet.  A half-inch thick slate, the iPad has a 9.7-inch LCD IPS 1024 x 768 display with multitouch, , WiFi 802.11n and – optionally – integrated 3G, the iPad is based on a new 1GHz Apple A4 of the company’s own design. Onboard storage ranges from 16GB to 64GB, and the whole thing runs the iPhone OS with a new, custom UI. Best of all, pricing will start at $499 when the Apple iPad begins shipping in around 60 days time, with $130 on top for adding integrated 3G. More details after the cut.

The iPad battery is apparently good for up to 10hrs use, or a month of standby, and it recharges via a 30-pin dock connector that’s also used to sync with iTunes. Elsewhere there’s a digital compass and accelerometer, and the iPad can be used in both portrait and landscape orientations; in the latter, the on-screen keyboard is, Apple reckon, almost as large as a MacBook keyboard. Hooking up your regular Mac or PC triggers an iTunes sync of all multimedia, apps, bookmarks, calendar entries and other data, just as it does on an iPhone.

Fresh to the iPad is a new ebook reading app, iBooks, complete with an ebook store for wireless downloads. Apple have partnered with Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, MacMillan and Hachett Book Group, and ebooks can include color and B&W content, together with images and video. Samples and reviews will be available, and there are page animations for reading. Fonts are interchangeable and resizable, and there will be a range of fiction and textbook content to purchase at launch.

Meanwhile Apple have also developed a new iWork suite for the iPad, with three new apps: Numbers (spreadsheet), Keynote (presentations) and Pages (word processor) which will each be available for $9.99. All have been specially reworked for the iPad’s 1GHz processor and to suit its UI, and support presentation animations and transitions, spreadsheet graphs and tables, and in-app image editing.

Apple have pushed out a new version of the iPhone SDK today, with support for the iPad – and a simulator – in the hope that developers will jump on board.  However all of the original iPhone apps will run on the tablet, either at their standard resolution in the center of the display or at 2x zoom resolution for full-screen use.  The App Store is available on the iPad, obviously, and iPad-specific titles will be prioritized.  There’s still no support for multitasking, however.

There will be three versions of iPad, a 16GB model for $499, a 32GB model for $599 and a 64GB model for $699. Adding 3G will be $130 on top of that (the 3G models won’t ship for 90 days or so), and Apple will offer two data plans – $14.99 for 250MB or $29.99 for unlimited data – which will be pre-paid, managed from the iPad itself and contract-free. As with the iPhone 3GS, Apple have partnered with AT&T for their data service, and subscribers will also get unlimited AT&T WiFi hotspot access included. The 3G modem itself will be unlocked and use a GSM “micro-SIM” for international use, which could present issues as relatively few carriers currently offer them; official international data plans are expected to be finalized in the June/July timeframe.

Trio of companies up against bid from Trinity Mirror and MacMillan media for regional news

Scottish broadcaster STV has partnered with ITN and Bauer Media, owner of radio networks including Kiss and Magic, to bid to run the regional news pilot in the south of Scotland.

The consortium, which will be known as the Scottish News Network, is aiming to win cash from the government's pilot independently funded news consortiums scheme to replace ITV's regional news operation.

The bid will put them in competition with Trinity Mirror, publisher of the Daily Record, and production company MacMillan Media which yesterday announced a partnership to bid for the same pilot.

STV is Scotland's ITV licensee, ITN provides news bulletins for Channel 4 and ITV while multimedia company Bauer owns and operates 13 radio stations in Scotland.

SNN claims that its partners reach 98% of the Scottish audience every week and the scale and reach of the consortium "would ensure true plurality aside from the BBC and consumer choice of news provision in Scotland".

"As the current provider of television news on the Channel 3 [ITV] Network in Scotland, we believe that our track record in production and innovation, our strong ratings for our news service, combined with the additional expertise from ITN and Bauer will result in a compelling and exciting proposition," said Rob Woodward, chief executive of STV.

Earlier this month ITN revealed it has secured the backing of Melvyn Bragg for its bid to run the regional news pilot in the Border and Tyne Tees region. ITN's partners in this pilot are Johnston Press, Newsquest and Bauer Radio.

Harvey Mudd College is led by Maria Klawe, HMC's fifth president who began her tenure in 2006. A renowned computer scientist and scholar, President Klawe is the first woman to lead the college since its founding in 1955. Prior to joining HMC, she served as Dean of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University. During her time at Princeton, Maria led the School of Engineering and Applied Science through a strategic planning exercise that created an exciting and widely embraced vision for the school.

At Harvey Mudd College she led a similarly ambitious strategic planning initiative, "HMC 2020: Envisioning the Future." Maria joined Princeton from the University of British Columbia where she served as Dean of Science from 1998 to 2002, vice president of student and academic services from 1995 to 1998 and head of the Department of Computer Science from 1988 to 1995. Prior to UBC, Maria spent eight years with IBM Research in California, and two years at the University of Toronto. She received her Ph.D. (1977) and B.Sc. (1973) in Mathematics from the University of Alberta. Maria has made significant research contributions in several areas of mathematics and computer science including functional analysis, discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, human-computer interaction, gender issues in information technology, and interactive-multimedia for mathematics education.

Her current research focuses on the development and use of multi-modal applications to assist people with aphasia and other cognitive impairments. Maria is a past president of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) in New York, chair of the Board of Trustees of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology in Palo Alto, and a trustee of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics in Los Angeles and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. In the past Maria has held leadership positions with the American Mathematical Society, the Computing Research Association, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the Canadian Mathematical Society.

Maria is one of the 10 members of the board of Microsoft Corporation, a board member of the nonprofit Math for America, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and past chair of the board for the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology in Palo Alto, Calif. She was elected as a fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery in 1996 and as a founding fellow of the Canadian Information Processing Society in 2006. Other awards include Vancouver YWCA Women of Distinction Award in Science and Technology (1997), Wired Woman Pioneer (2001), Canadian New Media Educator of the Year (2001), BC Science Council Champion of the Year (2001), University of Alberta Distinguished Alumna (2003), Nico Habermann Award (2004), and honorary doctorates from Acadia University (2006), Dalhousie University (2005), Queen's University (2004), the University of Waterloo (2003) and Ryerson University (2001).

Newspaper publisher launches joint bid with MacMillan Media

Newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror has partnered with MacMillan Media, the production company behind GMTV's bulletins for Scotland and Northern Ireland, to bid to run the regional news pilot in the south of Scotland.

The partnership, which includes Trinity Mirror's Daily Record and the Dumfries and Galloway Standard as well as community groups, is aiming to win cash from the government's pilot independently funded news consortium scheme.

"This will give communities in the south of Scotland back their voice on TV," said Sly Bailey, the chief executive of Trinity Mirror. "With our partners MacMillan Media, we aim to deliver an enhanced, low-cost

model for the local TV news of the future."

The consortium says that news bulletins would be produced entirely in Dumfries and Galloway and

the Borders. At the moment the service comes from Gateshead.

Video journalists working in the heart of the region's towns and villages would provide an enhanced local news service, according to the partners.

The bid will be supported by Trinity Mirror titles the Dumfries and Galloway Standard, the Galloway News and the Daily Record and Sunday Mail.

The service will also have a companion website and provide open access and multimedia training for community groups.

"Our combination of multimedia journalism skills will deliver the TV news service that the south of Scotland demands and deserves," said Michael MacMillan, owner of MacMillan Media.

Trinity Mirror has also launched a bid for the English news pilot in the Tyne Tees and Border ITV regions, with Ten Alps and the Press Association.
