European Senior Team Chess Championship

The European Chess Union, Greek Chess Federation and AMO Galaxias Sports’ Club organize the European Senior Team Chess Championship, from May 3rd to May 11th , 2011 in Thessaloniki. It is an official event of the ECU and will have massive participation. A total of 200 players in 40 teams have already signed up, with players coming from more than 20 countries.

So far top player is GM Viktor Korchnoi, followed by GM Slobodan Martinovic, GM Vitaly Tseshkovsky, GM Evgeny Vasyukov, IM Georg Danner, GM Mark Tseitlin, and GM Borislav Ivkov. All teams and the confirmed participants can be found at the official website.

Spring open Alexander the Great

A total of 100 players from 11 countries have already signed up for the spring Thessaloniki Open "Alexander the Great", organized by the Chess Akademy of Thessaloniki. The event is part of the Games Festival and is in a mini Grand Prix with St. George tournament. The signup is still open.

GM Ivan Cheparinov top seeded in Bansko
15 GMs, 14 IMs, and a total of 40 titled players in Bansko

15 GMs, 14 IMs, and 40 titled players is the total count for Bansko Open 2010. More than 170 players have confirmed their presence in what is projecting to be one of the strongest opens of the season.

GM Ivan Cheparinov (2668) is the top seeded player of the competition. His main competition comes from the World Blitz Championship finalist GM Boris Savchenko (2632), the many times Bulgarian Champion GM Vasil Spasov (2606), as well as the Armenian Champion GM Avetik Grigoryan (2580), GM Vladimir Georgiev (2582), GM Athanasios Mastrovasilis (2556), GM Ioannis Nikolaidis (2552), and the Israel silver medalist IM Tamir Nabaty (2529).

The average ELO of the top 10 participants is 2588.

Round 1 of Bansko Open is December 13th at 17:00 local time. The competition is 9 round Swiss event and will continue until December 19th, when last round and prize giving take place.

The tournament is organized by Chessdom.com, Capital Chess Center (Sofia), and Chess Akademy (Thessaloniki).

Opening ceremony and blitz

Opening ceremony will take place December 12th at 10:00 at the central square of Bansko. It will include greeting from the Mayor Alexander Kravarov, draw of colors for round 1, and a symbolic first move. Several hours of concert from local groups is to follow, organized by municipity to celebrate the chess tournament and the opening of the ski season.

Signup for blitz takes place from 10:30 to 12:00, when registration closes and pairings will be made. 1st round of blitz is scheduled for 13:00.

Back in July we reported that there would be a 2011 Desktop Summit, a joint conference between the GNOME and KDE developers via combining their GUADEC and Akademy events, respectively, to one location at one time. There was a 2009 Desktop Summit held in the same fashion, but up until now all we knew is that there would be a 2011 Desktop Summit in Berlin during August, but the details were yet to be announced. There are special rating prizes for the winners of U2400, U2200, U2000, and U1800.

I've been fascinated by the Oracle attack on Google's Android. I don't follow sport and just couldn't understand why so many people were getting excited about the World Cup at Akademy. But to me these epic disputes are a great spectator sport, as well as an opportunity to participate individually. Back in 2009 there was the Desktop Summit that placed GUADEC and Akademy, the annual development conferences for the GNOME and KDE desktops, respectively, in the same location at the same time. While there was not a 2010 Desktop Summit for more open collaboration between these two major free software projects, there will be a 2011 Desktop Summit and it's taking place in Berlin...

Hohndel talked about various things including Aaron Seigo's keynote, happiness at work, and his relationship to KDE. "Dirk H: I know a lot of the early KDE community members like Kalle and Matthias. I used KDE software from the start to the 2.0 release, and lost contact for a while. I'm interested in the Linux client so since a couple of years I'm trying to figure out where it is going. I follow both Gnome and KDE development, see what is going on in the open source world. I've been repeatedly trying the latest KDE Plasma Desktop (which still fails for me for a number of reasons). The KDE community interestingly has undergone a lot of changes - very much unlike the Linux kernel where the 'oldtimers' are still very much involved. Seriously, of the 20 initial Linux developers, 15 are still very active."

It is even bolder when presenting a non-KDE project at the annual conference of KDE, one of the leading providers of desktop Linux software. However, that was exactly how Valtteri Halla, Director of Nokia MeeGo Software chose to title his keynote address."
