The Emmy Awards will stay on broadcast TV for most of the rest of this decade.The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the big four networks -- ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC -- reached a new deal late Wednesday (May 4) that will keep the awards telecast on network TV through 2018. The 2011 awards will air Sept. 18 on FOX, with Mark Burnett ("Survivor," "The Celebrity Apprentice") serving as executive producer.Burnett has produced a handful of awards shows in the past (notably the MTV Movie Awards and the People's Choice Awards), but this will be his first crack at the Emmys. "I know the excitement of standing on the Emmy stage before your peers and the American public to receive that statue," he says. Charlie Sheen has missed the April 29 deadline to submit his name for the Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series category for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, TVLine is reporting. It isn’t known if the actor, who was nominated four consecutive times between 2006 and 2009, decided not to enter the race or if he forgot about the deadline. However, it’s being reported that Sheen’s reps contacted the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to inquire about the missed deadline. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences reached a $66 million deal with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC that extends their TV contract through 2018.

Under the agreement, the four networks will continue to air the awards ceremony in a rotation, with Fox kicking off the cycle this year. The academy will get an increase in the license fee from the networks totaling about $8.25 million per ceremony. The previous deal, which expired this year, entitled the academy to $7.5 million.

The new eight-year deal also allows that, beginning in 2012, each year's designated network, along with the academy, can review the number of awards given and how they're presented. The move is an effort to shorten the telecast because of a recent decline in ratings.

Businessman who saw a new future for Newsweek

Sidney Harman, who has died aged 92 after suffering complications from leukaemia, was the audio pioneer who took stereo music into American homes. A laurelled career in US public life followed, and was topped last year with the purchase of the magazine Newsweek from its parent company, the Washington Post.

Harman entered into partnership with Barry Diller, chairman of IAC, owner of some 50 internet companies worldwide, to merge the Daily Beast website into a new company, the Newsweek Daily Beast Co. Tina Brown, founder and editor of the Daily Beast, became editor-in-chief.

The merger capped a business career that spanned more than 50 years and was marked by innovation, public service, personal philanthropy and a belief that doing business involved more than making money.

Harman argued in his autobiography, Mind Your Own Business: A Maverick's Guide to Business, Leadership and Life (2003), that business life should be informed by personal values and a moral compass. He was critical of "Master of the Universe" management styles. In his memoir, the Montreal-born Harman told the story of growing up in a Jewish family in New York City, his physics degree at City College and his early career working for a New York firm manufacturing public address sound systems. His boss, Bernie Kardon, was the chief engineer. Frustrated at the conservative management, in 1953 Harman and Kardon resigned, putting $5,000 each into a new company to manufacture home sound systems.

The three-tube AC/DC radio in US living rooms in the early 1950s was large, but with limited quality. Harman Kardon integrated the clumsy system of amplifier, preamplifier and speakers into a single package, and made high-fidelity sound part of American life. Harman bought his partner's stake in 1956, retaining his name for the corporation. Two years later, Harman Kardon introduced the first stereo receiver, the Festival TA230. Life on US college campuses was never the same.

The company was merged in 1962 with a cable television company. It was not a happy deal, and Harman sold his share in the company, only to buy the company back in a series of aggressive acquisitions that transformed it into an influential conglomerate. In the late 1960s Harman Kardon introduced the audio noise-reduction system developed by Dolby Laboratories.

An advocate of enlightened labour relations at Harman Kardon plants, Harman caught the eye of President Jimmy Carter, who in 1977 appointed him under-secretary of commerce. While working in Washington he met and married his second wife, Jane Lakes, who was also working in the Carter administration. Jane Harman went on to serve as Democratic congresswoman for the 36th District in California, representing coastal communities in Los Angeles county.

When Sidney took up his appointment in Washington, he sold Harman International to Beatrice Foods for $100m. In 1980, when he left public life, he bought the company back, but new technologies of the 1980s had made the hi-fi and stereo of the classic Harman Kardon products old-fashioned, and the company's adjustment to digital technologies was unsure. A failed sale in 2007 to private equity buyers, led by KKR and Goldman Sachs, led to Harman's retirement a year later, at the age of 89.

He held the Judge Robert Widney chair in business at the University of Southern California, was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, co-authored Starting with the People (1988), on the search for a new national consensus, with Daniel Yankelovich, and donated $20m to support the Harman Centre for the Arts in Washington. Harman was a generous supporter of the Folger Shakespeare Library and the Aspen Institute, and funded the Program on Technology, Public Policy and Human Development at Harvard University.

Harman's family will continue to support Newsweek Daily Beast Co. He is survived by Jane; by their children, Daniel and Justine; by four children, Lynn, Gina, Paul and Barbara, from his first marriage, to Sylvia Stern, which ended in divorce; and by 10 grandchildren.

He was 86. His stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel, said the cause was lymphoma. “While the goal of all movies is to entertain,” Mr. Lumet once wrote, “the kind of film in which I believe goes one step further. It compels the spectator to examine one facet or another of his own conscience. It stimulates thought and sets the mental juices flowing.” Social issues set his own mental juices flowing, and his best films not only probed the consequences of prejudice, corruption and betrayal but also celebrated individual acts of courage. In his first film, “12 Angry Men” (1957), he took his cameras into a jury room where the pressure mounted as one tenacious and courageous juror (Henry Fonda) slowly convinced the others that the individual on trial for murder was in fact innocent. (Justice Sonia M. Sotomayor of the United States Supreme Court said the film had an important influence on her law career.) Almost two decades later, Mr. Lumet’s moral sense remained acute when he ventured into satire with “Network” (1976), perhaps his most acclaimed film. Based on Paddy Chayefsky’s biting script, the film portrays a television anchorman who briefly resuscitates his fading career by launching on-air tirades against what he perceives as the hypocrisies of American society. The film starred William Holden, Faye Dunaway and Peter Finch as the commentator-turned-attack-dog whose proclamation to the world at large — “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!” — became part of the American vernacular. “Network” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including best film and best director, and won four, including best actor (Mr. Finch), best actress (Ms. Dunaway), best original screenplay (Chayevsky) and best supporting actress (Beatrice Straight.) Yet for all the critical success of his films and despite the more than 40 Academy Award nominations they drew, Mr. Lumet himself never won an Oscar, though he was nominated four times as best director. (The other nominations were for “12 Angry Men,” “Dog Day Afternoon” and “The Verdict.”) Only in 2005 did the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences present him with an honorary Academy Award. Manhola Dargis, writing in The New York Times, called it a “consolation prize for a lifetime of neglect.” In 2007, in an interview that was videotaped to accompany this obituary online, Mr. Lumet was asked how it felt to win an Academy Award at long last. He replied, “I wanted one, damn it, and I felt I deserved one.” That he was more a creature of New York than of Hollywood may have had something to do with his Oscar night disappointments. For Mr. Lumet, location mattered deeply, and New York mattered most of all. He was the quintessential New York director. “Locations are characters in my movies,” he wrote. “The city is capable of portraying the mood a scene requires.” He explored New York early on in “The Pawnbroker” (1964), the story of a Holocaust survivor (Rod Steiger), numbed and hardened against humanity by the horrors he has endured, who deals with racketeers in his Harlem pawnshop until his conscience is reawakened by a vicious crime on his doorstep. The city loomed large in Mr. Lumet’s several examinations of criminal justice system. Police corruption particularly fascinated him, beginning with “Serpico” (1973). The film, based on a book by Peter Maas, was drawn from a real-life drama involving two New York City police officers, David Durk and Frank Serpico, who told David Burnham, a reporter for The New York Times, that they had ample evidence of police graft and corruption. Publication of their story led to the mayoral appointment of a commission to investigate the charges and ultimately to major reforms. Both the book and the film concentrated on Detective Serpico, played by Al Pacino, and his efforts to change the system. Mr. Pacino’s performance brought him an Oscar nomination. Mr. Lumet returned to the theme in 1981 with “Prince of the City,” for which he shared screenwriting credit with Jay Presson Allen. Based on the book by Robert Daley, the film dealt with an ambitious detective (Treat Williams) who goes undercover to gather evidence for an investigative commission and who winds up alienated and alone after being manipulated into destroying the lives and careers of many of those around him. Even the teeming cityscape has turned barren. Mr. Lumet focused on criminals, rather than police, in “Dog Day Afternoon” (1975), telling the story (again based on fact) of a botched attempt to rob a Brooklyn bank. Mr. Pacino again starred, this time as Sonny, the leader of an amateurish gang of bank robbers whose plans go awry and who winds up taking hostages and demanding jet transport to a foreign country. It turns out that Sonny, although he has a wife at home, had planned the robbery to pay for his boyfriend’s sex-change operation. In 2009 the film was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. New York, or at least a fantasy version of it, was even the backdrop for Mr. Lumet’s most uncharacteristic film, “The Wiz,” his 1978 musical version of the “The Wizard of Oz” starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. Roundly panned, it was also a box-office failure. By the time he finished shooting “Night Falls on Manhattan” in 1996, Mr. Lumet had made 38 films, 29 of them on location in New York City. That film, written by Mr. Lumet and based on another Daley novel, “Tainted Evidence,” once again looked at the justice system as it moved from a shootout with drug dealers into a revealing courtroom trial. The courthouse was one of Mr. Lumet’s favorite arenas for drama, beginning with “12 Angry Men.” He returned to it again in “The Verdict” (1982), with a screenplay by David Mamet and a cast led by Paul Newman as a down-at-the-heels lawyer who redeems himself and his career when he represents a malpractice victim in a legal battle with a hospital. But his concerns could also range more broadly, to issues of national survival itself. One of the most sobering films of the cold war era was his 1964 adaptation of Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler’s novel, “Fail-Safe,” a taut examination of the threat of accidental nuclear war with Henry Fonda as the president of the United States and a young Larry Hagman as his Russian-speaking interpreter. The film concluded with a harrowing suggestion of an atomic blast on American soil, rendered as a series of glimpses of ordinary life — children playing, pigeons taking wing — simply stopping. The scenes were from the streets of New York. Sidney Lumet was born on June 25, 1924, in Philadelphia. His father, Baruch, an actor, was born in Poland and moved his family to New York when Sidney was a baby and joined the Yiddish Art Theater. By the time he was 4, Sidney was appearing onstage with his father, and he went on to make his Broadway debut in 1935 as a street kid in Sidney Kingsley’s “Dead End.” He appeared in several more Broadway shows, including Maxwell Anderson’s “Journey to Jerusalem” in 1940, in which he played the young Jesus. After wartime service as a radar technician in the Far East, Mr. Lumet returned to New York and started directing Off Broadway and in summer stock. His big break came in 1950 when he was hired by CBS and became a director on the television suspense series “Danger.” Other shows followed, including the history series “You Are There.” His career soared in 1953 when he began directing original plays for dramatic series on CBS and NBC, including “Studio One,” “Playhouse 90” and “Kraft Television Theater,” eventually adding some 200 productions to his credits. He also returned to the theater to direct Albert Camus’s “Caligula,” with Kenneth Haigh as the Roman emperor, and Shaw’s “Man and Superman,” among other plays. Among the highlights of Mr. Lumet’s television years were a full-length production of Eugene O’Neill’s play “The Iceman Cometh,” with Jason Robards as the salesman Hickey and “12 Angry Men,” which he directed for television before turning it into his first film. Some of Mr. Lumet’s early films had their origin in the theater. He directed Anna Magnani and Marlon Brando in “The Fugitive Kind” (1960), an adaptation of Tennessee Williams’s play “Orpheus Descending”; he traveled abroad to film part of Arthur Miller’s “View from the Bridge” (1962) in Paris, with Raf Vallone, Maureen Stapleton and Carol Lawrence, completing the film on the Brooklyn waterfront; and he returned to the world of O’Neill to film “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (1962), with Katharine Hepburn and Ralph Richardson as the tormented Tyrones. His 1968 adaptation of Chekhov’s “Sea Gull,” however, was generally deemed uneven despite a stellar cast that included James Mason, Simone Signoret and Vanessa Redgrave. A trainload of stars turned out for Mr. Lumet’s 1974 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express,” a project that took him abroad again, this time to Britain, France and Turkey, to film the famous whodunit in which the detective Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney) must single out a murderer from a crowd of suspects that included Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery and John Gielgud. There was a run of less than successful films, including “Running on Empty” (1988), with Judd Hirsch and Christine Lahti as ’60s radicals still in hiding from the F.B.I. 20 years after participating in a bombing; the police drama “Q & A” (1990), with a screenplay by Mr. Lumet, about a racist New York detective (Nick Nolte); and “Critical Care” (1997), a satiric jab at the American health care system. In 1995 Mr. Lumet published a well-received memoir, “Making Movies,” in which he summed up his view of directorial style: “Good style, to me, is unseen style. It is style that is felt.” In 2001 he returned to television as executive producer, principal director and one of the writers of a new courtroom drama for cable television, “100 Centre Street” (the title was the address of the criminal court building in Lower Manhattan). The series, which ran for two seasons on A&E;, had an ensemble cast with Alan Arkin as an all-too-forgiving judge known as Let-’em-Go Joe. The director seemed immune to advancing age. Before long, he was behind the camera again. “Find Me Guilty” (2006), which starred Vin Diesel, was a freewheeling account of the events surrounding the federal prosecution of a notorious New Jersey crime family. And he marked his 83rd year with the 2007 release of his last feature film, “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” the bleakly riveting story of two brothers (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke) propelled by greed into a relentless cycle of mayhem. The film drew raves, and some critics thought he deserved a fifth Oscar nomination for his directing. Mr. Lumet’s first three marriages, to the actress Rita Gam, Gloria Vanderbilt and Gail Jones, the daughter of Lena Horne, ended in divorce. He married Mary Gimbel in 1980. She survives him. Besides his stepdaughter, Ms. Gimbel, he is also survived by two daughters he had with Ms. Jones, Amy Lumet and Jenny Lumet; a stepson, Bailey Gimble; nine grandchildren and a great grandson. Mr. Lumet also had a home in East Hampton, on Long Island. Ms. Dargis called Mr. Lumet “one of the last of the great movie moralists” and “a leading purveyor of the social-issue movie.” Yet Mr. Lumet said he was never a crusader for social change. “I don’t think art changes anything,” he said in The Times online interview. “I think we are primarily camp followers. We’re not in advance of anything.” So why make movies?, he was asked. “I do it because I like it,” he replied, “and it’s a wonderful way to spend your life.”

 

Respected Hollywood and media personalities will serve on the Features, Documentaries and Shorts juries of the 9th Annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA), the organization announced today. The festival runs April 12-17 at ArcLight Hollywood in Los Angeles, California.

 

IFFLA Executive Director Christina Marouda said, "We are very appreciative to have such distinguished members of the film industry join us.  From academics and acting to filmmaking and journalism their varied expertise offers a well-rounded perspective to this year's jury." 

 

Jurors include Shaz Bennett, Susan Cartsonis, Parvesh Cheena, Myriam Despujoulets, Grace Lee, Cheng-Sim Lim, Claudia Puig, Ravi Kapoor and Robert Koehler.

 

The awards will be given out after the red carpet arrivals on Sunday, April 17th, prior to the closing night gala and world premiere screening of Walt Disney Pictures' ZOKKOMON which will be followed by a reception.

Features

Susan Cartsonis was an executive at Twentieth Century Fox for nearly a decade, rising from script reader to Sr. VP of Production, developing and supervising NELL, THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, among others, before starting her own company, Storefront Pictures. In 2000, The Hollywood Reporter named her one of the five top-grossing producers of the year for WHAT WOMEN WANT and WHERE THE HEART IS. She recently produced BEASTLY starring Vanessa Hudgens, Neil Patrick Harris, and Alex Pettyfer. Susan executive produced NO RESERVATIONS and MISTRESS OF SPICES starring Aishwarya Rai. She was recently elected Chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees of Women in Film and has served on the Independent Film Producers Committee at the Producers Guild of America.

 

Robert Koehler is a film critic for Variety, Cinema Scope, Cineaste and Film Comment, and director of programming for Festworks. He has contributed film criticism and writing to a range of publications, including Cahiers du Cinema and Die Tageszeitung, as well as theater criticism for the Los Angeles Times. He is a member of FIPRESCI and has served as a juror at festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Vancouver, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Indie Lisboa, Santiago, Palm Springs, Los Angeles and San Francisco Latino festivals. Robert was Director of Programming at AFI Fest in 2009. As a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, he serves as a programmer for the ongoing series,  The Films That Got Away.  He is the author of essays appearing in the anthology film books  On Film Festivals  and  Cine Argentino 98/09.

 

Cheng-Sim Lim is an independent film curator and filmmaker with over 17 years of programming experience in a wide range of American and international cinemas. Her work, including as the co-head of programming at the UCLA Film & Television Archive from 2001 to 2008, has helped to build audiences and appreciation in the US for filmmakers and video artists from Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Retrospectives that she has curated have toured North America and Europe to critical acclaim. Cheng-Sim has served on grants, awards and film festival juries. While she has recently returned to filmmaking, her curatorial interests remain undiminished, especially in advocating for overlooked popular and  minor  cinemas and media literacy.

 

Documentaries

Shaz Bennett is a writer/filmmaker/performance artist/voiceover artist/film critic and programmer, and she has written and directed the award winning films MARTINI, TUNNELS, and TOP OF THE CIRCLE. Shaz has worked in and around film festivals for over 20 years. She was the Associate Director of Programming at AFI FEST for ten years and has worked for the Los Angeles Film Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival. Shaz worked for the Sundance Institute tracking projects for the film and theatre labs and screening films for the festival. She has served on festival juries and panels at film festivals worldwide, and was on the selection committee for the LA Film Festival and the IDA Humanitas Award jury. Shaz writes regularly for Moving Pictures, La Vie de Boheme and Next Films.

 

Grace Lee is an award winning producer/writer/director who is currently in production on AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY, a documentary about 95-year-old Detroit philosopher and activist Grace Lee Boggs.  Her other credits include the feature AMERICAN ZOMBIE and documentaries THE GRACE LEE PROJECT, CAMP ARIRANG and BEST WURST. Grace received her MFA in Directing from UCLA Film School where her thesis film BARRIER DEVICE won a Student Academy Award and Directors Guild of America award.  She is the recipient of the Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Media, a Rockefeller Media Arts grant, the PPP Pusan Prize as well as funding from the NEA, Center for Asian American Media, UCLA Institute for American Cultures and others.

 

Claudia Puig has been a film critic at USA Today since 2001 and is also a regular contributor for NPR s Film Week. She has discussed the socio-cultural impact of movies on NBC News, CNN, MSNBC and Mitch Albom s radio show and programs in Boston and Washington DC. She was named Entertainment Journalist of the Year in 2009 by the Publicists Guild. Claudia began her journalism career in 1986 at the Los Angeles Times. She was part of the team that won a Pulitzer for its coverage of the 1991 L.A. riots. In 1993 she began covering primarily the movie business and still writes news stories and features, concentrating mostly on film reviews. Claudia has a B.A. in Communications Studies from UCLA and an M.A. in Communications from University of Southern California s Annenberg School.

 

Shorts

Parvesh Cheena is a prolific theater, television, and film actor. A native of Naperville, Illinois, Parvesh is also a musical theater graduate from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. His credits include TV s  Brothers and Sisters,   ER,   Sons of Tucson  and, most recently,  Outsourced.  Parvesh made his film debut in BARBERSHOP and reprised his role in the sequel. He also appeared opposite Diane Keaton in BECAUSE I SAID SO. Other credits include guest appearances in the short films THE BIG EMPTY opposite Selma Blair and FLY LIKE MERCURY directed by Harry Lennix and produced by David Schwimmer. Feature film roles include the upcoming HOUSE BROKEN opposite Danny DeVito, THE OTHER END OF THE LINE, and THE ODE, based on the acclaimed novel by Ghalib Shiraz Dhalla.

 

Myriam Despujoulets is Programmer of Seminars and Administrator of Fellow Affairs at the American Film Institute Conservatory, where she programs screenings, guest speakers and special events. A native of France, Myriam worked in film and events programming and cultural affairs at Le Louvre Museum, La Cit  des Sciences et de l Industrie, the M6 television network and the PR agency Le Public Syst me in Paris. She produced events for the Deauville American Film Festival, the Cognac International Thriller Film Festival, and the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. After moving to the United States, she worked for the Sundance Film Festival, AFI FEST and the City of Lights/City of Angels Film Festival (COLCOA) before joining the staff at AFI. Myriam is a member of the selection committee and advisory board for National Geographic s All Roads Film Festival.

 

Ravi Kapoor is an actor, writer and director. His acting work includes series regular roles on ABC's GIDEON'S CROSSING and NBC'S CROSSING JORDAN (for which he also directed), various BBC dramas, the feature film WILD WEST and, more recently, RASPBERRY MAGIC. He wrote and directed OH SWEET SITA, a verse play that ran in London and Toronto. He also wrote and directed the short film VICTOR RAMIREZ, ASESINO that has been playing at various festivals around the world, including IFFLA 2010 where it premiered. Born and educated in England, Ravi trained at the East 15 Drama School in London before relocating to the United States.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have announced that 248 feature films are eligible for best picture at the 2010 Academy Awards.  The number is down from previous years -- According to THR [1], 274 films were eligible in 2009, and 281 in 2008. The list of 248 eligible films have been sent with a nominations ballot to all active and life members of the Academy "who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than ten pictures." The ten films receiving the highest number of votes shall become the nominations for final voting for the Best Picture award. The nominations will be announced live on January 25th 2011 at 5:30am psd. The rules for eligibility is as follows: Films must be feature length (defined as over 40 minutes) Publicly exhibited by means of 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels For paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days, advertised and exploited during their Los Angeles County qualifying run in a manner considered normal and customary to the industry. Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. (This includes broadcast and cable television as well as home video marketing and Internet transmission.) However, ten minutes or ten percent of the running time of a film, whichever is shorter, is allowed to be shown in a nontheatrical medium prior to the film’s theatrical release. Oscar Goes Public?: As If! 

As everyone with a pulse knows, the Academy Awards annual Oscar ceremony is fairly exclusive. They even provide journalists with a list of ways the image of the show can be used and how the material must be presented. But this year, something unusual is happening in Hollywood. Behind the scenes, the Oscar marketing machinery is either missing a cog or has thrown together a whole new internal mechanism for the digital age.

This year, for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards presentation, you are invited to download their iconography. You and a billion other people worldwide.

You have to skim the facts on this one torn from a page of the official voice of the Oscars, just to believe it is true:

Beverly Hills, CA – The iconic symbols that evoke Oscar Night® – including the red carpet, the searchlights, the envelope and Oscar® himself – are center stage in "You’re Invited," the 83rd Academy Awards® marketing campaign unveiled today by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. For the first time, the public is invited to download the artwork to use as wallpaper and profile icons, and to share with friends. The images are available on the Academy’s website, www.oscars.org.

"We are excited by the bold use of these iconic images in the campaign, which people around the world associate with their love for the Oscars," said Oscar telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer.

"You’re Invited" features three distinctly Hollywood images with the fourth being the official 83rd Academy Awards poster which highlights a dramatically stylized Oscar, in keeping with the other images.

Created for the Academy by the creative marketing firm Omelet, the multiplatform, interactive campaign will culminate with the ultimate online watch party on Oscar Sunday, February 27.

Fans may now purchase a limited edition set of four 20x27-inch posters featuring the artwork for $35. The 27x40-inch official poster is also available for purchase for $20. All posters are printed on premium quality, Forest Stewardship Certified paper. These are the only 83rd Academy Awards commemorative items available for sale to the public. Purchases may be made only on the Academy’s website at http://www.oscars.org/posters.

The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

One of the most recognizable faces on television, Leeza Gibbons, is teaming up with AARP to once again connect with millions of people across the country.

As the organization’s new Ambassador for Care, she will bring information and resources to the more than 44 million Americans who are caregivers, along with her own personal experiences. Additionally, Gibbons will return to TV as the new host of AARP’s 30-minute lifestyle TV show, My Generation, which airs nationally on PBS.

“Leeza’s personal experience as a caregiver and the work she has done to aid others in this role make her a great fit as our new Ambassador for Care,” said Emilio Pardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer, AARP. “Add to this her new role as the host of My Generation, a role that obviously goes hand in hand with her expertise and success on TV, and we’ve got a powerful new arsenal of information available to AARP’s members and 50+ America.”

Best known for hosting Leeza, Entertainment Tonight and Extra, Gibbons has become a well known social entrepreneur and philanthropist creating her national nonprofit Leeza's Place for family caregivers. After losing both her mother and grandmother to Alzheimer’s, Gibbons was inspired by her family’s emotional journey to help others who were facing similar concerns and situations. “Leeza’s Place” now serves as a haven for those looking for support and guidance, offering free services for family caregivers of loved ones with any chronic illness or disease. My Generation will kick off its second season in late January 2011 with inspirational and personal stories from great guests such as pop icon Olivia Newton-John, opera superstar Denyce Graves, celebrity chef Guy Fieri, filmmaker Rob Reiner and actress Valerie Bertinelli. Throughout the season she’ll also talk with Martina Navratilova about health and fitness, Peter Greenberg about travel tips, as well as other AARP Ambassadors.

In this latest installment of Academy News, news from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 10 "Live Action Shorts" have advanced in the Oscar review period, AMPAS has a Twitter account, and this weeks starts the "Countdown to Oscar Night In America."

Live Action Shorts

Out of 76 pictures, 10 have moved to what could be called the semi-final round before between three and five are selected as nominees for the "Live Action Short Film" category at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.

The next step is for The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee, which looked at all 76 movies  during special screenings in New York and LA, to have their branches in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco hold their screenings. That will happen in January 2011, with the nominees to be named January 25th, with the other Academy Awards nominations at 5:30 AM. Here are the films:

After this blogger's badgering last year, AMPAS is finally on Twitter!  Hooray!  The Academy is at @TheAcademy and needs more followers!  As of this writing it has just 2,607 Twitter followers.  This is where stars like  with massive Twitter followers and who should be named hosts should chip in, like Ellen DeGeneres @TheEllenShow and Lady Gaga @ladygaga, as well as the Oscar Hosts Anne Hathaway @hathaway_anne and Janes Franco, who needs a new Twitter page.

Countdown to Oscars

Finally, it's just 80 days to the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27th, and 50 cities will host special charity events.  While there are a number of events held in a given area, only one will be selected as the official "Oscar Night In America" party for that metropolitan area.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced its new Hall of Fame inductees, and a few beloved television figures will soon be honored at its 20th annual ceremony.

Legendary actresses Diahann Carroll and Cloris Leachman are getting their due from the television world.

The two women join other inductees, including broadcast journalist Peter Jennings; MTV founder Tom Freston; composer Earle Hagen; writer, producer and creator of 'The Golden Girls' Susan Harris; and the late game show producer Bill Todman, and will be toasted at a posh fete to be held on Jan. 20 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

With the 1968 series 'Julia,' Carroll became the first black woman to star in her own television show. In the 1980s, she went on to make a career comeback as Dominique Deveraux on the prime-time soap opera 'Dynasty.' In recent years, the Tony Award-winning actress was a recurring character on 'Grey's Anatomy,' and at 75 years old, she is still appearing on the small screen. Currently, she guest stars in the USA series 'White Collar' as June, an elderly widow.

Leachman of 'Mary Tyler Moore' fame has won more Primetime Emmy Awards than any other female performer - with eight wins to her name. She also has one Daytime Emmy. The Academy Award-winner was a contestant on 'Dancing With the Stars' in 2008 at the age of 82. For years, she had a recurring role as Lois' mother on 'Malcolm in the Middle,' and now she stars on the Fox comedy 'Raising Hope.'

Chairman and CEO of the Television Academy, John Shafner, says each of the inductees have significantly contributed to television in vast ways.

"This year's group of Hall of Fame inductees continues to exemplify and define the accomplishments that we recognize with this honor. Each one of them has contributed enormously to the art of television, and we are proud to induct them into the Television Academy Hall of Fame."

"We congratulate them on this occasion and thank them for brightening our television universe with passion and talent," he added.

This year's inductees join past award recipients, including Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, Lucille Ball, Walt Disney, Barbara Walters, Dan Rather, Lorne Michaels, Katie Couric, Bob Barker, Bea Arthur, Regis Philbin and William Shatner.

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards has unveiled the International Jury members who will join previously announced President, Lord David Puttnam, for the fourth annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards to be held on the Gold Coast, Australia, on December 2.

Lord David Puttnam, Academy Award winner and producer of Chariots of Fire, The Mission and The Killing Fields, has assembled a Jury of highly experienced industry professionals from across the globe. They are:

 

Indian actress and star of Road, Movie Tannishtha Chatterjee, often referred to as the ‘Princess of Parallel Cinema' for her work in Indian arthouse cinema while also being known as one of the most international of Indian actresses for performances in films such as Britain's Brick Lane.

 

Multi-award winning Indonesian writer, producer and director, Salman Aristo, who wrote the screenplay for Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Troops, 2008) which holds the record for the highest box office in Indonesian film history.

 

Ming Zhenjiang - producer and First Deputy President of the China Film Producers Association, FIAPF's official representative in the People's Republic of China.

 

Acclaimed Australian cinematographer Ellery Ryan whose credits include such Australian classics as Angel Baby and Spotswood.

 

Kazakh writer/director Sergey Dvortsevoy whose film Tulpan won the APSA Best Feature Film Award in 2008 and the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes International Film Festival in the same year.

 

Turkish filmmaker and film academic Serdar Akar whose many awarded films include Valley of the Wolves: Iraq, which became the highest grossing Turkish film of all time.

Lord Puttnam arrived in Australia this week and will meet with the other Jury members from November 22 on the Gold Coast to commence their deliberations. Thirty-one documentary, animated, children's and feature films from 15 countries and areas have been nominated for the 2010 Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Winners will be announced at the APSA Ceremony, which will be attended by Nominees and special guests from across the region.

An international cultural initiative of the Queensland Government, APSA is a unique collaboration with UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers Associations which acclaims films from 70 countries and areas; one third of the earth; and half the world's film output.

Films are judged on cinematic excellence and the way in which they attest to their cultural origins.

APSA's previous Jury Presidents have been renowned Indian actress and humanitarian Shabana Azmi (2007), Australian director and Academy Award nominee Bruce Beresford (2008) and leading Chinese producer and director Huang Jianxin (2009).

APSA Chairman Des Power said today: "The 2010 International Jury, headed by Lord David Puttnam, is representative both of the international filmmaking community and also of the diverse range of skills within the screen industry - including producing, acting, directing and cinematography. 

"The Jury has a demanding task ahead of them to determine the Winners across nine APSA Award categories, to be selected from the 31 films which have received nominations. I know they will undertake this challenging work with enthusiasm and integrity and I look forward to welcoming them to the Gold Coast next week."

The members of the 2010 International Jury will automatically be inducted into the Academy of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Led by Patron Jack Thompson, the Academy is a growing body of the region's most influential names in film including past APSA Nominees, International Jury and Nominations Council members.

Jury President - Lord David Puttnam
United Kingdom
Lord Puttnam's body of work spanning more than 30 years as an independent producer includes Palme d'Or winner The Mission (1986) and the iconic Chariots of Fire, for which he received a Best Picture Oscar in 1981. The Killing Fields (1984), based on the experience of three journalists in Cambodia during the time of the Khmer Rouge, was also highly acclaimed. In 2006, Lord Puttnam was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement. His extensive producing credits include Bugsy Malone, Local Hero, Midnight Express, The Memphis Belle and he also produced Ridley Scott's directorial debut The Duellists, which played in Cannes in 1977 receiving a Unanimité award. A working peer in the UK's House of Lords, he now focuses primarily on political and policy work in relation to education, the creative industries and climate change and in 2009, produced We are the People We've Been Waiting For, a thought-provoking documentary about the modern education system. He is Chancellor of the Open University. In 1998 he founded that National Teaching Awards which he Chaired until October 2008.  He served as the first Chair of the General Teaching Council (2000-2002), and on a variety of other public bodies. He was founding Chair of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, and for ten years chaired the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, as well as serving as a Trustee of both the Tate Gallery and the Science Museum. He has also recently become a Trustee of the Eden Project. He was also Vice President and Chair of Trustees at BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) from 1994 to 2004. He was appointed President of UNICEF UK in July 2002, and played a key role in promoting UNICEF's advocacy, awareness and fundraising objectives. He retired from this post in July 2009.In February 2006, became Deputy Chairman of Channel Four, and in April 2006 Chairman of Futurelab. In April 2007 he became the Chairman of Profero. In the same month he was also appointed Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Climate Change Bill Scrutiny Committee. Also in 2007 he was appointed as Chairman of North Music Trust, The Sage Gateshead. Most recently he was made President of the FDA. David was awarded a CBE in 1982, received a Knighthood in 1995 and was appointed to the House of Lords in 1997. In France he has been honoured as a Chevalier (‘85), Officer ('92) and, most recently (2006) Commander of Arts and Letters.

Tannishtha Chatterjee
India
Tannishtha Chatterjee is often referred to as the Princess of Parallel Cinema for her work in Indian cinema while also being known as one of the most international of Indian actresses. For her performance in the British film Brick Lane (2007) she was nominated for Best Actress in the British Independent Film Awards alongside fellow nominees Dame Judi Dench and Anne Hathaway. Chatterjee's first film Swaraj won a National Film Award in India. She went on to star in the Indian French co-production, Hava Aney Dey (Let the Wind Blow), which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Film Award at the Durban International Film Festival. Her other notable roles have included German director Florian Gallenberger's Shadows of Time, which received international acclaim at film festivals including Toronto and Berlin, and Bengali film Bibar for which she won Best Actress at the 2006 Osian Film Festival and the 2007 BFJA awards. She won the Best Actress Award at the Miaac New York Film Festival for the film Bombay Summer. Chatterjee has finished filming Ravi Kumar's film, Bhopal: Prayer for Rain in which she stars alongside Martin Sheen, recently starred in Road, Movie with Abhay Deol and is working with Lucy Liu in a film based on the book Half the Sky. A trained Hindustani classical vocalist, she has performed for film soundtracks and at the Royal Opera House in London with well known British composer, Jocelyn Pook.

Ellery Ryan ACS
Australia
An award-winning Australian cinematographer, Ellery Ryan graduated with honours from Swinburne Film School and worked first as a camera assistant and then as DOP for legendary Australian director Fred Schepisi at The Film House in Melbourne, including as camera assistant on The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith. For more than 30 years, Ellery has been sought after as a DOP on commercials, feature films and in television. He has been nominated four times for the Australian Film Institute Best Achievement in Cinematography Award for his work on the feature films Spotswood, Angel Baby, That Eye, The Sky and Grievous Bodily Harm, winning in 1991 for Spotswood and again in 1995 for Angel Baby. He has won several awards and distinctions from the ACS including a Golden Tripod for Dead Letter Office (1999). Most recently he has completed the feature films Van Diemen's Land (ACS National Award of Distinction 2010) and the recently released romantic comedy I Love You Too. Ellery's many other credits include the classic Australian feature films Cosi and Death in Brunswick. His substantial television career includes telemovies, mini-series and series including The Secret Life of Us, The Great Bookie Robbery and Glass Babies. His career in advertising has seen him shoot commercials in Australia, USA, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Thailand, UK, Ireland, Korea, France and Greece.

Salman Aristo
Indonesia
Salman Aristo is a multi-award winning writer, producer and director, born in Jakarta in 1976. Among his acclaimed works as a screenwriter is Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Troops, 2008) which holds the record for the highest box office in Indonesian film history. Eleven of his other films, including Catatan Akhir Sekolah (2005), Garuda di Dadaku (2009) and Sang Pemimpi (The Dreamer, 2009), achieved significant success in Indonesia and received wide recognition on the international film festival circuit. Garuda di Dadaku (2009) won the Best Children's Film at the Indonesia Film Festival and was nominated for Best Screenplay at both the Indonesia and Bandung Film Festival. Aristo has since adapted the screenplay into a novel along with two of his other screenplays Alexandria and Mimpi Sang Garuda. With a career spanning magazine editorships, three novels, more than 30 screenwriting credits across film, television and documentary films and numerous producing, directing and consulting credits, Salman Aristo enjoys sharing his experience and gives regular workshops in scriptwriting and filmmaking. He is crazy about books, music and soccer and would like to be remembered as a good storyteller. For him ‘life is about storytelling. The rest, is just details'.

Ming Zhenjiang
People's Republic of China
Ming Zhenjiang is the First Deputy President of the China Film Producers Association, FIAPF's official representative in the People's Republic of China. He is on the national committee of China's Federation of Literature and Arts Associations, a standing council member of China's Association of Film Artists and a Vice President of China's Film Reviewers Association. He is one of China's best-known movie producers and reviewers and a highly regarded poet and writer. Ming Zhenjiang has been responsible for over 50 feature films which have won several Chinese and international film awards, including Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards. Charging Out Amazon screened at the Kennedy Art Centre in the US and won the 2002 Golden Rooster for Best Film and other titles include On the Taihang Mountains, An Earth Shaking Event and My Personal Long March. He has produced more than 50 documentaries as an organiser. In recent years Ming Zhenjiang has created and produced more than 60 TV series, including Surprising Assault of Soldiers which was screened widely on local television networks throughout China and won an Excellence Award at the Tokyo International TV Movie Festival. Ming Zhenjiang has published more than 100 articles about film and television and several appear in collections such as Treasury of Contemporary Chinese Thoughts.

Sergey Dvortsevoy
Kazakhstan
Born in 1962 in Chimkent, Kazakhstan, Sergey Dvortsevoy graduated from the Radio Technical Institute for Aviation in Novosibirsk. As an Aeroflot manager he travelled the country, until he discovered an advertisement for Courses for Directors and Screenplay writers in Moscow. His first short film Scasti demonstrated his ability to show the world in its simplicity, its warmth and its strength. This wonderful mixture of naturalism and poetry was later called ‘new sincerity' by the critics. Dvortsevoy has garnered more than 30 awards for his documentaries, including Paradise, Bread Day, High Way and In the Dark. Dvortsevoy describes his films not as documentaries but as life cinema: "I am as watchful as an eagle, my head rotates in a circle of 360 degrees". His debut feature film, the internationally acclaimed Tulpan, premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival winning the prestigious Prix Un Certain Regard. Tulpan went on to win major awards more than 17 film festivals and events around the world including Tokyo, London, Montreal, Reikjavik and Dubai, and was awarded Best Feature Film at the APSAs in 2008.

Serdar Akar
Turkey
Serdar Akar is a multi-award winning filmmaker, born in 1964, in Ankara, Turkey. A graduate of both the Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy and the Cinema & TV Department of Mimar Sinan University he began his career working as assistant to several Turkish directors.In 1998 he wrote and directed the feature film On Board, followed by the multi-award winning Short Passes in Confined Spaces in 2000, based on his childhood memories and shot in the town where he spent his childhood. After directing Maruf in 2001, he directed the renowned Valley of the Wolves: Iraq, which was the most expensive Turkish film ever made at that time and also became the highest grossing Turkish film of all time. He shifted his focus to television and went on to direct more than ten highly successful TV Series. In 2006 he formed his own company Filmakar and produced the much debated Barda. In 2007 he produced stage plays through his theatre company Tiyatroadam and, with seven feature films and 13 TV series to his name, he continues to be an academic lecturer at the Mimar Sinan University.

National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences inducted WBZ-TV's Ron Sanders into its Silver Circle Wednesday night.

Destroy All Movies is the punk film Bible, and a weekend-long release party at Cinefamily proves LA's still the mohawk Mecca. Raw concert clips, post-apocalyptic gang fantasies and scene survivors will blow the doors off the Not-At-All-Silent Movie Theatre with rare footage from the East Coast, West Coast and both ends of the pond.

The chaos begins Saturday afternoon with "TV Party Tonight", ripped from the small screen's attempts to make sense of a movement. The program features news clippings, public-access performances and after-school special The Day My Kid Went Punk. Of course, the Cinefamily managed to track down the director of this dated gem for a Q&A. Saturday evening boasts rough-and-rowdy 35mm screenings of Times Square and Class of 1984, the latter accompanied by its director and a Mondo Mohawk Megamix courtesy of Destroy All Movies editors Zack Carlson & Bryan Connolly and VHS anarchist-preservationists Everything Is Terrible!

But in the end, narratives are bullocks. The real thrash sets in Saturday at midnight, with D.O.A., a dirty-fly-on-a-dirtier-wall look at English pioneers Sex Pistols, Generation X and X-Ray Spex on an ill-fated American tour. The sick boys soldier on Sunday afternoon with Urgh! A Music War, the iconic concert film featuring X, Devo, The Cramps, The Police, Joan Jett, Gary Numan and enough extras to cause spontaneous human combustion. It's a rare look at real punk and new-wave legends, and an even rarer look at bands too tough to survive past filming.

Sunday evening sports a deadly double of European punk docs. La Brune Et Moi stalks the Parisian underground, while Shellshock Rock puts the feckin' a in Belfast with Stiff Little Fingers! Destroy All Movies concludes with local legends The Slog Movie (featuring Fear, TSOL, Circle Jerks & vintage Oki Dog) and cracked-out mockumentary Desperate Teenage Lovedolls, two Super-8 stunners shot in the Super-80's. Director Dave Markey will be on hand for the program, as will "Lovedoll" Jennifer Schwartz.

Individual shows are $10 a piece, and Cinefamily's got a hundred weekend passes for $35. Should you survive the celluloid, the weekend pass also nets you an after-party at Part Time Punks at The Echo.

But a monopoly on the movement might be the least punk thing ever. The UCLA Film & Television Archives plugs into anarchist auteur Alex Cox, who hosts a new cut of his spaghetti Western pastiche Straight to Hell on Friday night and Sex Pistols biopic Sid & Nancy on Saturday. For the grand finale, the Downtown Independent hosts "anti-folk" Soviet songstress cum power pianist Regina Spektor's Live in London concert film for one night only, also Saturday. It's 2010 - why haven't they invented a way to be in three places at once yet?

The screenings of student etudes will be held on Wednesday, December 1st in the Festival Center in Opera Nova. The director of photography of the best etude will be awarded with Laszlo Kovacs Student Award-Golden Tadpole. The remaining awards are Silver and Bronze Tadpole.
Moreover, The Polish Filmmakers Association will grant the award of 5.000 PLN to the best cinematographer.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences always has an interesting press release to send along, but this one takes it.

It's not often Star Trek (where Zachary Qunto played Mr. Spock and is in the photo by Indywire) is the focus of an Academy presentation, but this time, J.J. Abrams movie version of the popular television series and favorite of this blogger is the subject of an event on Thursday, November 18th. Here's the release:

Visualize Star Trek at The Academy

Beverly Hills, CA – The Science and Technology Council of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present “Visualize This: Previs in the Making of ‘Star Trek,’” a program exploring the previsualization (previs) process in the digital age, on Thursday, November 18, at 8 p.m. at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Writer-producer Damon Lindelof will use sequences from the 2009 Academy Award nominee Star Trek to demonstrate how innovations in previs are influencing the filmmaking process.

The evening will feature a panel of Star Trek crew members, including David Dozoretz, senior previsualization supervisor; Brian Pohl, previsualization supervisor; Roger Guyett, visual effects supervisor; Marc Evans, production executive; and film editors Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey. Joining the panel will also be production designer and Council member Alex McDowell and previsualization supervisor Chris Edwards. Lindelof will lead a discussion on the challenges and opportunities that come with this technology-driven process. In addition, the program will include film clips and behind-the-scenes footage demonstrating how previs was used to shape several key scenes in the film.

Previs is an evolving pre-production process that now incorporates 3D animation tools and virtual environments, enabling filmmakers to fully explore their creative visions through the use of visual references for complicated film shots and sequences long before production begins.

In addition to producing Star Trek, Lindelof is co-writing the film’s forthcoming sequel as well as the feature Cowboys & Aliens, directed by Jon Favreau, due to be released in 2011. Lindelof also was a writer and executive producer on the television series Lost.

Star Trek received Oscar® nominations for its visual effects, sound editing and sound mixing, and won an Oscar for Makeup.

Tickets for “Visualize This” are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL & FILM MARKET

The Palm Springs International ShortFest, Short Film Festival & Film Market, celebrated as one of the most acclaimed short film showcases in the world, will take place at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs June 21 - 27, 2011. Film submissions are now being accepted through March 1, 2011.

Now in its 17th year, the Palm Springs International ShortFest has become known world-wide for the extraordinary community of filmmakers it attracts, and for the quality and scope of its programming. Showcasing over 320 short films each year from more than 40 countries, with a library of more than 2,900 films available to film buyers, industry and press in its concurrent Short Film Market, ShortFest is the largest festival of its kind in America.

The Festival offers twenty awards in six competitive categories (including student and non-student work), with cash awards or film production prizes in each category (over $100,000 worth of prizes, in all), as well as the "Bridging the Borders", "Best of the Fest" and "Future Filmmaker" awards. All first place winners in the Live Action, Animation and Best of the Fest categories are automatically qualified for nomination consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Since the Festival's inception, 75 short films featured at the event have gone on to garner Academy Award nominations.

Festival events include nightly receptions, as well as seminars, master classes and scheduled 'one-on-one' meetings with industry experts and filmmaking professionals, free to all filmmakers who participate in the Festival. Best of all, all films submitted to the Festival are eligible for free inclusion in the Short Film Market and made available to all attending industry and press for viewing at our Film Market headquarters & screening center.

Executive Director Darryl Macdonald said, "The Festival and its associated Film Market is ranked the largest in North America. It is also consistently noted as one of the most filmmaker friendly and finest organized short film festivals in the World. Over the course of the Festival's first 11 years, 49 films from our line-up went on to become Academy Award nominees. Our Short Film Market, which runs during the Festival, encompasses over 2,200 new short films and viewing facilities for attending industry, press and filmmakers.

Last year's ShortFest drew almost 15,000 attendees, including over 500 filmmakers, press and industry buyers and representatives and is truly a world-class event. Each year over two-thirds of the films presented at the Festival are acquired by distributors, networks or online companies, or find sales agents. In addition to attracting the top North American and European distributors and sales agents of short films, agents, studio and specialty-channel representatives attend the Festival in search of the next generation of writers and directors.

Competition: ShortFest is a competitive Film Festival. Films accepted are automatically eligible for the applicable competition category. A Jury comprised of filmmakers and industry representatives will screen all competition finalists, deliberate and announce the results at Awards Night on June 28, 2010. Filmmakers not present will be notified in writing.

Awards: The Palm Springs ShortFest is one of the few qualifying festivals for the Best Short Film Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

• Acceptable formats for exhibition: 35 mm, BetaSP, Digibeta, DV Cam, Mini

DV. We cannot exhibit DVDs or HDCAM.

• All non-English language films must have legible English language subtitles.
• The film must not have been viewed on the internet or national broadcast,

cable or satellite television prior to the Festival screening.

• The film must not have had a public screening in Palm Springs prior to the

Festival screening.

• Films accepted into the festival must arrive with shipping and customs

duties or taxes pre-paid, two weeks prior to the Festival opening.

• Please note: If you are submitting multiple shorts, each short must be

submitted on a separate disc for selection purposes. Compilation discs with
multiple titles will not be accepted.

Applications must include:

• Completed entry form (typed).
• DVD Screener (NTSC or PAL).
• Full production credits and director's biography.
• Film synopsis - 50 words.

While the pint-size terrors of Orphan and Seed of Chucky aren't considered quality motion pictures, they're a ton of fun. The New Beverly pairs both on Thursday, and gives Seed of Chucky the Criterion treatment by bringing together Jennifer Tilly and everyone responsible for the deadly doll's life: scribe Don Mancini, voice Brad Dourif and puppeteer Tony Gardner. The program is co-presented by Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule, and if the blog's extensive Orphan promo is any indication, these films will see more attention and insight tonight than they ever have or will. If you want more demento for your dollar, the Cinefamily's Friday night special, The Diabolical Dr. Cinefamily's Horrifying Anthology Of Horror Anthologies hosts local Martian Tommy Wiseau and his latest short, The House That Drips Blood on Alex, accompanied by the trashy Night Train to Terror, the terrific Creepshow, and choice cuts from horror shorts and anthologies.

If you enjoyed Soderbergh's Che, but thought it wasn't long enough, head on over to the Egyptian for the beyond-epic biopic Carlos. French critic cum director Olivier Assayas introduces his film about international terrorist Carlos the Jackal, alongside actor Edgar Ramirez, who plays The Jackal for an intense 330 minutes (if you don't feel like doing the math, that's 5 and a half hours!). One of the few things that lasts longer is a plastic bag. Sunday, the Downtown Independent's screening of Bag It! offers an education on the truth, consequences and avenues to avoid plastic disposables. It also benefits the Friends of the Los Angeles River, who have fished out tons of these bags over the years. Sadly, human beings don't last quite as long. Pay tribute to recently departed 1930's child actor Johnny Sheffield at an Academy screening of his signature film, Tarzan Finds A Son. The New Beverly's midnight screening of Pulp Fiction is another poignant one, as it will be the first screening since the passing of Sally Menke (the film's editor and longtime Quentin Tarantino collaborator) last month.

We've noted, multiple times, that the entertainment industry has an incredible ability to simply declare that any new innovation is clearly going to kill the old industry, and every single time they've been wrong (often ridiculously so). Of course, the most famous may be Jack Valenti's claim that the VCR was the "Boston Strangler" to the movie industry. But this kind of ridiculously wrong predicting happened throughout history. One of our readers, Craig, points us to a fantastic program put on by the CBC radio up in Canada, culling through the archives of old interviews and re-airing them, including a series of interviews with "leading ladies of Hollywood." That link is actually to the second part of the series. You can find the first part here. Each episode is a series of interviews. The final interview in the first part is a few minutes of a talk with Mary Pickford, who not only was a huge Hollywood star in the early days of Hollywood, but also cofounded the movie studio United Artists (with her husband, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin), and was one of the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the folks who put on the Oscars). The interview then continues into that second part of the series.

So why do we care? Well, take a listen to the interview in part 2, done in May of 1959 with the CBC's Tony Thomas, where Pickford starts complaining about how television is killing the movie industry, and warns especially about the pernicious intent of pay TV. Starting around 27:40 in the recording, she claims that TV is going to takedown the motion picture industry:

Pickford: I, in my short life, have seen the birth and the death of motion pictures.

Thomas: You think the motion picture has died?

Pickford: Mm hmm.

Thomas: But why should it?

Pickford: Because of the competition. Uh, you know. You can see the old motion pictures, that are just as good... or better than some of them today. And why should people leave their house?

Thomas: But you can see a picture so much better on a big screen in a comfortable theater than you can on a box in your living room.

Pickford: Well, that's true. But it's very expensive, and we have to face the fact that at one time there was 17,000 theaters -- I don't know what the number is today -- but it breaks my heart to go by them today and see them... bowling alleys and skating rinks. Certainly, the motion picture will always be there, but I believe when paid TV comes in, and I'm sure it'll be less expensive than going to the theater, that it'll be the real death knell of motion pictures.

Sound familiar? Of course, there's nothing wrong with making a bad prediction. We all do it. But, when the industry "insiders" are so consistently dead wrong about how every new technology will "kill off" their existing industry, at some point, shouldn't we be asking why people still take them seriously when they do it again?

This weekend, the Egyptian hosts Spanish thespians Luis Tosar, Antonio de la Torre and Eduardo Noriega, as well as director Emilio Aragon, as part of its 16th annual Recent Spanish Cinema series. Thursday, Tosar opens the series with Even the Rain, Spain's official Oscar submission. The film follows the fight against privatization of water in Bolivia, blurring fact and fiction by cutting footage of real protests within its story. It's preceded by Voltereta, a coming-of-age short set in 1985 Brooklyn. Cell 211 locked down the Goya Awards (the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars), with eight victories including Best Film and Best Actor for Tosar. De la Torre leads the U.S. premiere of Lope and the L.A. premiere of Fat People. Noriega accompanies another L.A. premiere, For The Good of Others. Aragon appears alongside his film Paper Birds.

Jump continents and eras for the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution Project at the Wells Fargo Theater. The Autry series opens with Cinema, Politics and the Mexican Revolution, a free panel discussion on the intersection of provocative politics and cinematic censorship in 1930's Mexican films. The line-up includes El Compadre Mendoza, El Prisioneiro Trece and Vámonos con Pancho Villa. For three more from the '30s - in English this time - swing on by the New Beverly, for W.C. Fields' Man on the Flying Trapeze, Never Give a Sucker an Even Break and the Marx Brothers' Monkey Business. Keep the screws loose Friday night for a 25th anniversary screening of Clue at the Nuart. Rocky Horror shadowcasters Sins O' The Flesh pull double duty with this performance, and a costume contest judged by Clue comedienne Colleen Camp (Yvette, the French maid) promises to be tres chic!

WASHINGTON (CAP) - The U.S. government has apologized for a series of experiments during the late 1980's and '90s in which federal researchers used propaganda and other indoctrination techniques to artificially inflate the popularity of marginal celebrity David Hasselhoff throughout Germany, Austria and other European locations. The State Department issued a statement yesterday calling the practice "unethical."

"Although the events in question occurred more than a decade ago, we are outraged that such reprehensible research could have happened under the guise of entertainment," said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "We deeply regret that it took place, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent singing and acting."

TV historian David Thomson uncovered the experiment, which was apparently conducted to test whether informational social influence could be contrived to create a celebrity out of a persona with no discernable talent or skill. Specific European countries were targeted based on decreased levels of American influence in the popular culture of those locations.

"We call it the Plymouth Rock Syndrome: all hype, no substance," said Thomson. "Except where people who visit the supposed landing place of the Pilgrims never go back because it's just a randomly selected rock with '1620' carved into it, the Germans fell for the Hoff hype hook, line and sinker.

"As unscrupulous as the Hoff experiments were, they were also wildly successful beyond anything the researchers could have imagined," added Thomson. "They had essentially created a test tube celebrity."

Documentation dating as far back as 1985 shows that researchers had also given thought to using Eddie Murphy or Patrick Swayze for the experiment, both of whom had questionable singing talent. However, they ultimately went with Hasselhoff after watching a few episodes of Knight Rider and realizing that both Murphy and Swayze could actually act.

"There's only one explanation why an actor of Edward Mulhare's caliber would agree to appear on a show like Knight Rider," said CAP News TV critic Marc Price. "Here's a man who cut his chops on TV classics like Battlestar Galactica, Hart To Hart and Murder, She Wrote, and yet agrees to star in 84 episodes of this cheesy show?

"You won't find it written anywhere, but he was obviously in on the experiment," Price concluded.

Hasselhoff, however, was not. According to the papers discovered by Thomson, he was "an unwitting pawn led to believe in his own faux competency based on manufactured popularity." Hasselhoff eventually learned of his role in the experiments, which close friends say contributed to his 2006 divorce from actress Pamela Bach. It also led to a severe drinking problem that culminated in the 2007 home video that showed him drunk on the floor trying to eat a cheeseburger and being named captain of the U.S. Celebrity Beer Pong Team.

"This case of unethical human subject research represents an appalling example from a dark time in the history of entertainment," said Shelly Palmer, President of the NY chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. "And although we'd like to believe this sort of thing can't happen today, our investigation into Disney's treatment of its child stars may tell us otherwise."

Although Hasselhoff has attempted to legitimize his place in Hollywood with roles such as his recent stint as a judge on America's Got Talent, pundits say the scars may never fully heal on a legacy tainted for the sake of science.

January, February, or March - that is the question remains unanswered. Although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has scheduled the Oscars to occur on February 27, 2011, this is not set in stone. The awards ceremony could still be moved.

There have been rumors all year that the ceremony could be moved to either January or March. The January rumor is looking like it could have some merit, and the reason this month is of interest is because it could boost television ratings and bring back some of the excitement of the Oscars.

Bruce Davis, the Academy's executive director, told the LA Times that while the show is set for February 27, it could be moved to late January or early February. The issue of moving it to January, however, would be big competition with the NFL.

Davis noted:

"There are only a limited number of Sundays in January and February. I think some people feel it has lost some of its energy, and we're looking for energy."
