Breaking Silence in the Face of Death

Upon returning to Venezuela in 1987, Mario finished high school and college. He became a "youth leader-preacher" in the Seventh Day Adventist Church and decided to not have sex with anyone for three years. This was out of a desire to "be part of the church and be holy," but it was also an effort to be with his family: "I knew I couldn't be homosexual in my family."

During this time, Mario had a girlfriend with whom he held hands and read the Bible. At the same time, he "was constantly dreaming about guys." Mario began to hear more about HIV, discovering that some men he knew in Texas were infected, some of them dying of AIDS. He was "horrified" about the possibility of being HIV positive.

After three years, at the age of 24, while still denying that he was gay - at least on the surface - Mario was drawn once again to the United States in hopes of gaining, "freedom and being able to express myself and do things..."

In 2006, I created a project with a friend who had taught in Botswana. Called "Blogswana," the project was designed to teach students at the University of Botswana how to employ social media to tell their own stories. It was very popular - with Africans. All the funding sources, public and private, however, seemed to believe the same thing: Why fund tech when everyone knows Africans need industrial baby formula and fly whisks? Why teach social media when no one in the "Dark Continent" knows how to use a computer?

Well, the entire continent of Africa has begs to differ with that cartoonish picture. Having covered African technology extensively here, and having been invited to speak at the continent's largest digital technology conference, I wanted to find out what Africans themselves were doing in terms of utilizing the social web to short circuit the abiding desire of the West to draft Brad Pitt and Bono as the voices of Africa. I found the Kuyu Project.

I became aware of the Kenya-based Kuyu Project through one of my Twitter follows, Rassina Hassan, who works with the group. She introduced me to the Kuyu's Founder and Executive Director, Simeon Oriko.

Kuyu's focus is teaching high school students in Africa how to use social media to affect change in their communities. As they say in their mission statement:

"We deeply believe that by offering an open platform and teaching digital techniques we are fueling the dreams and aspirations of these young minds which might one day lead to the innovations and technologically driven solutions that will change Africa and the world."

One of their initiatives is StorySpaces, "a mobile and web based social media application aimed at enabling different communities to interact and participate in global conversations online." Their hope in building it is to allow users to transform their online conversations "into offline tangible actions that make an impact in the local community."

They're process of currently setting up a StorySpace for citizen journalists and hacktivists in Uganda "to respond to the escalating protests about food and fuel price increases in the country" and raising funds through IndieGoGo, a crowdsourcing funding tool.

I interviewed Oriko, a senior at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, via email about the project, its goals and the utility of the social web in an African context.

When did you start The Kuyu Project?

I started The Kuyu Project in June 2010 after conducting a series of digital literacy camps in various high schools around the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton as the chairperson of the local computer science students association. The camps were mostly built around training the kids on how to use web based tools such as Google, Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha for their education. As the camps grew bigger and became more popular, we increased the training and materials to include personal objectives and social change. The camps were primarily targeted at senior high school students.

What inspired its creation?

The inspiration came from the impact I saw in the youth I was teaching at the digital literacy camps. One girl in particular was inspired to use Google and later social networks on her mobile phone to seek out information to achieve her dream of becoming a pilot. For her and a number of other kids, they quickly learned the value of technology and using it as advantage to seek out new opportunities for effecting change in their communities as well as achieving their personal objectives.

Reflecting on this, it became clear to me that we could create a dynamic framework for scaling a youth initiative based on the learning value of technology to address the unique social, cultural and economic challenges that face our continent. I decided to use the interesting new realities the social web and mobile technology presented in Africa as the foundation to build our grassroots youth technology development project.

How important is digital literacy to the future of Africa's youth, its economy, etc?

Digital literacy helps create mind share, intellectual capital and capacity, as well as innovative solutions which will empower and include African youth in fully participating in the 21st century. It is also critical to the growth of knowledge societies and ecosystems in the rapidly changing technological landscape of Africa. Africans are already next generation web users accessing social networks and the mobile web through their phones. This remarkable social mobile revolution across the continent is creating explosive new opportunities ranging from politics, governance, entrepreneurship, commerce, banking, media and moving towards disrupting all other industries. We're seeing some of the adaptive issues that occur when youth aren't adequately prepared to enter a workforce, motivated to vote or start their own ventures which largely depend on their digital literacy and participatory skills. As evidenced in recent world changing events in Tunisia, Egypt and other parts of the continent, Africa is ripe for a transformational technological youth quake that extends beyond social media and mobile technology as revolution tools towards encompassing all other aspects of our lives.

How will your project help?

Primarily, the Kuyu project will create a digital literacy framework to build on:

• a. Greater visibility and multimedia opportunities for African youth who are under-represented and marginalized in their societies to share their unique stories and join the global conversation
• b. Upgrading the digital and creative skills of African youth to include mobile and cloud computing technology
• c. Mind share and dynamic participation in various situations concerning the current seismic social, economic and political changes occurring all over Africa
• d. Intellectual capital, creativity and the capacity for technology transfer skills among peers
• e. Scaling informative and tested solutions as a direct result of facilitating knowledge sharing, collaborative and collective problem solving
• f. Critical mass of stronger connected communities with a pool of champions growing solidly behind relevant causes and firmly dedicated towards advancing them.
• g. Accumulation of valuable resource base from tapping into the virtual and physical cognitive wealth of actively contributing communities sharing and applying ideas
• h. Viral network of talented African technologists and developers spreading digital literacy and innovation in an open crowd sourced platform

What other projects using, or about, digital tech, in Kenya, and in Africa in general, do you find interesting?

I'm biased toward mobile and social change projects. The ones I find interesting in this field include Voices of Africa, (specifically Haki Zetu and SPARC which is a solar powered Internet kiosk aimed at helping rural communities get digital connectivity as well as creating local economies) and Revoda, a social election monitoring tool.

What does the future hold for Kenya, and Africa in general?

I believe Africa's future greatly relies on technological advances and brain-gain currently driven by social media and mobile technology with increasingly-connected African youth and diaspora recreating and re-imagining its immense potential by deviating from existing story lines to establish a new powerful vision of change across the continent. Social technologies such as the one we're building at StorySpaces are radically changing the narrative and fueling the dreams and aspirations of young minds which might lead to the innovations and technologically driven solutions that will change and benefit Africa and the world.

Can you describe how you conduct your digital literacy campaigns and the scope of your digital literacy camps?

Our digital literacy campaign consists of conducting digital camps for our trainees to acquire relevant digital skills particularly in the areas of citizen media, hacktivism, youth empowerment, government transparency and accountability. Trainees will be specifically taught to share their acquired skills and join our Youth Mentorship Program designed to increase their teaching output to peers. This will ensure a wider reach for our project to gain and build a viral grassroots movement of digitally savvy youth starting in Kenya and scaling to the rest of their population in Africa.

To date we have trained high school students in the following schools in Kenya:

● Kapsabet Boys High School
● Kapsabet Girls High School
● Mwiruti Secondary School
● St. Joseph's Chepterit Girls Secondary School
● Chemundu High School
● Terige Boys High School
● Baraton Adventist Secondary School

The training camps at these schools have been conducted in partnership with the Baraton Information Technology Students Association, BITSA. This organization includes all the Information Science and Computing students at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.

We plan to expand our digital literacy camps to Uganda and Ghana in the next half of 2011 with a target goal of reaching out to another 2500 students.

How does StorySpaces work and where are you on the project?

StorySpaces was recently demoed at the Media 140 conference in Barcelona.

StorySpaces is envisioned as an open platform web and mobile based social network where youth can share stories and quickly see the important news and stories in their social network. StorySpaces is based on the idea that users relate better to experiences and identify with actions and want to participate rather than just consume information. This provides them with raw material as a foundation for transforming digital conversations into practical offline actions. In the social web it offers an alternative from the limits of Facebook and Twitter in documenting full length stories.

StorySpaces will hold a collection of multi-media story snippets composed of relevant topical themes that are easy to set up; youth, aspiring journalists, and other users can add a post (story) without having to set up a blog or worrying about those things that set barriers to entry of stories in other words, promoting transparency, security and ease-of-access.

StorySpaces can be used for all types of web and mobile blogging from modern storytelling and traditional storytelling techniques to citizen journalism. One of the ways we plan to use it for The Kuyu Project is to give youth a place to connect with others who are seeking to effect positive social change to find peers, mentors tapping into a resource base to guide them in their paths.

We are working on creating StorySpaces not only as a Web application but also for a variety of mobile handsets including iOS and Android. In addition SMS/MMS capabilities will be a part of the design. The mobile app will allow citizens to subscribe to news feeds from trusted sources and to search for news stories by keyword and download those stories. Some of the underlying problems with the current solutions is that while many are using blogging to take active roles in providing news about local communities, many see setting up a blog as too complicated. Additionally, social networking tools like Facebook have their own culture and meaning to youth, but are not specifically designed to encourage promoting stories of social good. While other tools such as Twitter offer microblogging, but not the opportunity for extended stories, StorySpaces is designed to give youth a place to connect with others who are seeking to effect positive social change and to find mentors to guide them in their paths.

How did you put your team together?

The team met on Twitter actually. I was connected with Deb Elzie (@debelzie) and she had a strong interest in the implementation of The Kuyu Project. When I shared with my vision with her and my desire to create a mobile and web application, she thought I should meet Victor Miclovich (@vicmiclovich) a talented programmer based in Uganda. We had a 7 hour Skype session one weekend and our core team was formed with Rassina Hassan (@rassina) joining us later. We are building a pan-African virtual startup with global ties and our team of 20+ smart volunteers continues to grow. The idea for StorySpaces was formed through collaboration. A majority of the team is based in Uganda and Kenya with a number of others in West Africa - Emeka Okoye (@EmekaOkoye) in Nigeria , Alfred Rowe (@Nukturnal) in Ghana - and in the United States. We all meet via Twitter or through our regular Skype group sessions and it has been a great experience so far, the entire team is very committed to seeing the project launch successfully.

What is your background?

My background in tech began as a child and picked up with the advent of mobile and social technologies. My interest in these fields led me to an early conceptualization of Mobile Cloud Computing and interest in ICT4D. I've since focused efforts on creating a mobile cloud computing platform and digital literacy initiatives.

I also have a strong attachment to the African tech industry. I've previously been a Microsoft Student Partner and also partnered with under sea fibre-optic organization, SEACOM on a number of projects.

I'm currently involved in the "Digital Natives With a Cause?" program which is a joint program by the Centre for Internet and Society, Bangalore, and Dutch development organization, HIVOS. My contribution to the program involves participation in a number of workshops that culminate in a book documenting the role of youth and technology in social transformation processes.

I'm also a member of the iHub, a tech incubator and innovation hub. In the coming months, I'll be interning with m:Lab, a consortia of four organizations that aims to facilitate demand-driven innovation by regional entrepreneurs, ensuring that breakthrough low-cost, high-value mobile solutions can be developed and scaled-up into sustainable businesses that address social needs.

Although Simeon and his crew are creative and motivated individuals, it hardly takes away from their uniqueness to point out that such young people are far from impossible to find in Africa. In fact, Africa, with its adventurous spirit and entrepreneurism, especially as regards the mobile web, is one of the most exciting areas of the world when it comes to new technology.

There are doubtless places on the continent that need help with food and clearly too many places that need health assistance, professionals and teaching, but there are also many places and tons of people like the Kuyu crew, people who are working hands-on to move their people and countries forward. They do not "deserve your help" as much as they should inspire your admiration.

Keep a weather eye on Tech Africa. These days, if you blink, you're liable to miss something cool.

A recent study by researchers at Loma Linda University showed that vegetarians had a 36% lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome compared with people who ate animals.

Good news, except, what the heck is metabolic syndrome?

Well, according to Wikipedia, metabolic syndrome is a combination of disorders that, when mixed together, dramatically increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome affects about one in five Americans and seems to be brought on by factors such as stress, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and now – according to the new Loma Linda University Adventist Health Study 2 – perhaps an animal-based diet.

The study found that 25% of vegetarians (people who ate meat, poultry or fish less than once a month) had metabolic syndrome.  That number increased to 37% for semi-vegetarians (people who ate fish regularly and other meats less than once a month) and to 39% for non-vegetarians.

“Trending toward a plant-based diet is a sensible choice,” said Gary Fraser, MD, PhD, principal investigator of the study.

The Adventist Health Study 2 is a long-term study of the health of 96,000 Seventh-Day Adventist across the United States and Canada—this particular study focused on a random sampling of 700 participants.

I find it interesting to note that, despite the fact those who avoided meat were less likely to end up with metabolic syndrome, still a full 25% of those vegetarians who participated in the study had the disease.

It’s a good reminder that a vegetarian diet is not necessarily a healthy diet.

After nearly 80 years, mail will no longer be delivered to thousands of Loma Linda, Calfiornia residents on Sundays.

According to a KABC report, "Mail delivery had been taking place on Sundays instead of Saturdays for religious reasons. Loma Linda has a large Seventh-Day Adventist population, and Saturday is their Sabbath.

The U.S. Postal Service said it is trying to save the extra money it has to pay carriers to deliver on Sundays. The 15 mail carriers serving Loma Linda's 8,000 homes will make their final Sunday delivery April 17. Saturday delivery starts April 23."

Only Express Mail delivery will now be available on Sundays in the small California city.

This was sent in prior to the debate...

So I'm going to see Sam Harris this Thursday night debate William Lane Craig at the University of Notre Dame. Upon hearing about the debate, I was thrilled to find out that Notre Dame is only 4 hours away from me, and even more thrilled when I found out that there were still tickets left (6 tickets left, to be exact. I'm way in the back, but at least I'll be there).

So getting a ticket to this thing really made my day. A lot. I love watching debates, and I'm glad that people like Hitchens and Harris are making noise and standing up to religious dogma. I feel like if I had heard some of their arguments sooner or if someone had stood up to my religion sooner maybe I might not have suffered all the ill effects of religion in my life.

It is the natural tendency of humans to share exciting things with others, usually in the form of friends and family. And it's true that I have friends to share things with. Like the fact that my business is growing I share with my friend who also owns a business. Or the fact that I'm enjoying being a father and learning from my 4 year-old I share with my own brother who also has a family.

But who do I share this with? As a recently de-converted Seventh-Day Adventist I find myself in that raw, bitter, and fearful time that immediately follows apostasy. I'm not exactly inclined to share my excitement about attending this debate with my facebook (mostly Adventist) friends only to be met with judgment and ridicule. I'm left in that strange and lonely place where the one thing I am most passionate about is the one thing I'd better not be open about.

So that's why I'm coming here. I wanted to tell you all something:

I’m hardly a vegetarian, but from time to time I’ll opt for the veggie burger instead of its meaty sibling or I’ll go with the 6-inch veggie patty at Subway over my usual favorite turkey.

Perhaps it’s the remnants of my ex-boyfriend – a born and raised, never consumed meat in his life vegetarian – whose habits I partially adopted for that year and a half we dated just for the simple matter of ease and convenience.

Or maybe it’s some sort of subconscious awareness that, while I don’t know the exact facts or figures, being vegetarian is "healthier" than being a meat-eater.

Among a variety of reasons why going leafy rather than meaty is healthy, a new study published in the journal “Diabetes Care” found that vegetarians experience a 36 percent lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome than non-vegetarians.

So what relevance does metabolic syndrome have on our health? A lot, turns out.
Metabolic syndrome can be a precursor to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke and these findings indicate vegetarians may be at lower risk of developing these conditions.

This Loma Linda University study found that “while 25 percent of vegetarians had metabolic syndrome, the number significantly rises to 37 percent for semi-vegetarians and 39 percent for non-vegetarians. The results hold up when adjusted for factors such as age, gender, race, physical activity, calories consumed, smoking, and alcohol intake.”

Lead researcher on this study, Nico S. Rizzo, PhD, says he was surprised how obvious and very real the distinction between vegetarians and carnivores is.

"I was not sure if there would be a significant difference between vegetarians and non-vegetarians, and I was surprised by just how much the numbers contrast," Rizzo said. "It indicates that lifestyle factors such as diet can be important in the prevention of metabolic syndrome."

The study examined more than 700 adults randomly sampled from Loma Linda University's Adventist Health Study 2, a long-term study of the lifestyle and health of almost 100,000 Seventh-day Adventist Christians across the United States and Canada.

The vegetarians were found to have lower triglycerides, glucose levels, blood pressure, waist circumference, and body mass index (BMI). Semi-vegetarians also had a significantly lower BMI and waist circumference compared to those who ate meat more regularly.

I still like my filet and I’ll never turn down a bowl of New England clam chowder, but it’s definitely encouraging and satisfying to know that at least one good thing resulted from my previous relationship – a more accepting and appreciative attitude toward vegetarianism.

So next time you’re in the mood for a hamburger, you might want to consider choosing the vegetarian alternative. Just some food for thought.

This afternoon, a couple of smiling, glassy-eyed young ladies stopped by my house to talk about Jesus. I was delighted, but I made the mistake of telling them up front that I was an atheist, and didn't believe in their religion…and they backed away slowly, said "goodbye!", and scurried away. It's so hard to bait the trap when you insist on using honesty.

Anyway, I did get a little online satisfaction reading this great ferocious rant about Seventh Day Adventists.

The Seventh-day Adventist cult's "prophet" and founder, the alcoholic, masturbation-obsessed habitual plagiarist Ellen G. White, was astonishingly fanatical and legalistic, and let's face it, folks, crazier than a bag of wet cats. At the age of nine, Ellen was hit in the head with a rock, which resulted in her being comatose for three weeks. Many think this trauma damaged her brain in ways that could have caused her extreme zealotry -- I prefer to call it religious lunacy -- which involved what she claimed were visions shown her by god, visitations by angels, and even a trip to Jupiter. Others think she was a calculating, greedy, power-hungry fraud. Some think she was a combination of both. Then there are the Sadventists, who believe even today in 2011 -- despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary, all of which is poorly explained away by the cult, although the explanations are good enough for the believers -- that she was a true prophet of god whose writings were divinely inspired and remain an infallible supplement to the word of god. The cult holds Ellen in the same regard as the biblical prophets (something else they deny vehemently to outsiders but acknowledge within the invisible walls that surround the cult). Over the years, there have been endless revisions and changes made in Ellen's writings by the Sadventist Powers That Be to cover up some of her more embarrassing statements or obvious errors, which seems odd if her infallible writings are divinely inspired. Nevertheless, nearly a century after her death, Ellen's writings are still the arbiter of doctrine and scriptural interpretation in the cult.

The really fascinating thing about Ellen White is that most other Christians consider her and her cult heretical — the whole thing about a wild-eyed prophetess declaring a privileged status with God and Jesus and witnessing miracles doesn't sit well with all the other wild-eyed fundamentalists and evangelicals who declare that they have a special relationship with divinity. And yet the modern young earth creationists, the kooks who trace their interpretation of the Bible and our origins to Whitcombe and Morris's The Genesis Flood, are actually promoting Ellen White's version of the creation story. Ron Numbers has traced it all back in his book, The Creationists, and basically what Ken Ham and the Hovind's are pushing is Seventh-Day Adventist doctrine, sanitized of any mention of the crazy Millerite lady from Maine.

When I talked to Imaculee Ilibagiza months ago, I revisited the Rwandan genocide that began on April 6, 1994 with hesitance. So many thousands slaughtered while the world watched and did nothing. She talked about living in a small bathroom for months with several other women, hiding for fear of being slaughtered. It was hard to take in.

I had forgotten such a somber anniversary was approaching when I started reading “Finding Beauty in a Broken World” recently. The first of Terry Tempest Williams’ work I read, “Refuge,” made me appreciate her clear love of wilderness and her devotion to her family and their wellness. The 2008 book, “Finding Beauty” includes essays on the meaning of mosaics, prairie dogs and finally, genocide in Rwanda.

It was reading about the role of religion in this genocide that made me question how one reconciles belief in God with the horrific and immoral atrocities that happen during invasions and war. Details such as this are not just harrowing but they stall the logic of Christianity and Catholicism as institutions solely committed to grace:

The majority of the killings happened inside churches. In a 1991 government census, 89.9 percent of the population claimed membership in a Christian church; 62.6 percent said they were Catholic, 18.8 percent Protestant, and 8.4 percent Seventh-Day Adventist.

The complicity of the churches in the Rwandan genocide emerged from the complex web of colonialism, religion, politics, and power that ultimately made the slaughter of hundred of thousands of Tutsis possible.

Williams goes on to write about how colonialism “prepared the soil for ethnic divisions” but then moves on to this:

…As the dominant religion in Rwanda, the Catholic Church supported the status quo, even though Pope John Paul II was one of the few world leaders religious or political to speak out against the genocide…

What people do is much more important than what people say. It can be argued that sins of omission committed by priests during the genocide inspired more deaths than those by individuals who grabbed a machete and chopped their neighbors to death. The current government has accused at least twenty Catholic priests of war crimes.

The examples here are multiple. Certainly, there will be Catholics and Christians who will say that mentioning the institutional silence that makes the whole body of a church complicit in the slaughter of thousands is “picking on” the church. That’s a shallow argument, as far as I’m concerned. What interests me more are the deeper questions that people of faith answer (or fail to answer for themselves) on the question of how the God they believe in judges such atrocities.

Williams writes about two Benedictine nuns who in April 1994, turned refugees seeking shelter over to the Hutu militia. Their action:

…resulted in the slaughter of seven thousand people who were burned and butchered to death. Both sisters were Hutu. Ethnic loyalties transcended religious convictions —they believed that if they apologized to God, no matter what they did, they would be forgiven. They were convicted in Belgium in June 2001 on charges of homicide.

The natural parallel to these ghastly murders is the Holocaust or Darfur. There are also certainly questions of the morality of the U.S.’s role in Libya, or how to negotiate Islamic extremism with the majority Sunni Muslim outlook. But reading Williams and thinking again about the pervasive oppression and systemic murder and slaughter of an entire group of people, especially when facilitated by believers, must be a major motivator for why some who despise the idea of God mock religion and religious believers.

It had never occurred to me, really, as someone who lives in a gray area of belief, respecting that others have a theology that their hearts are steeped in and they follow it devotedly, but knowing that I’m not there. I have had moments of despair when I have questioned the existence of God, but there remains no outstanding question that remains as unresolved for me as much as the notion of complicity in religions when it comes to murder under the banner of purported Godliness.

And what about the religion that you don't understand confuses you? Also what religion are you? Is there a religion that although you don't practice has you curious? I am an Adventist. I of the Christian religions I know about understand Catholics the least. I am moderately intrigued by the Jews and the Messianics.

It's no secret that consolidations among healthcare providers are expected to jump substantially in the next few years. This will create organizational and productivity challenges for leadership and workforces involved.

It's also no secret that leaders of companies in consolidation frequently focus more on the strategic, operational and cultural components of an acquisition and less on the stress and trauma employees experience.

M&A literature is filled with stories of employees who experience stress, become demoralized, and operate out of fear. They often become more competitive with colleagues and refuse to take actions or make decisions that involve risks. Our experience at Root Learning in working with healthcare and other clients supports the idea that employee engagement drops significantly when employees are overwhelmed, scared, don't understand the issues and don't see the big picture.

However, while it seems natural to assume that mergers and acquisitions will negatively affect employee engagement, findings from the Konexa Research Institute suggest that may not always be true. In some cases, employee engagement can actually soar!

Konexa looked at drivers of employee engagement and characteristics of employee-centric leaders, and here is what they found:

1. Engagement of workers whose companies have merged with or been acquired by another company doesn’t automatically decline. But when layoffs are involved, the impact is usually negative.

2. Engagement areas that suffer the most include:

• Belief in the organization's future and its leaders
• Trust that employees have a promising future with the company
• Knowledge that the company will offer more higher-quality products and services than its competitors

3. Declines in confidence can be offset by employee-centric senior managers who take the time to be visible to employees and clearly explain the company's future direction.

4. When senior leaders credibly display concern for the welfare and morale of the workforce, employee engagement levels can actually rise dramatically. It boils down to leadership and the value that senior managers place on human assets.

We can attest to the impact of focusing on the human side based on what leaders of Beaumont Hospitals demonstrated in the acquisition of a new hospital. Beaumont worked with Root Learning to create a suite of learning modules that explained the details of its movement to think and act like a system--its integration of three hospitals under a "OneBeaumont" entity--including the reasons for it and how teams and individuals could help support it. The learning sessions were so successful that they were later added to the onboarding experience for all new Beaumont employees.

Given both the Konexa findings and the positive outcome for M&As like Beaumont, healthcare leaders who want to keep employee engagement high during M&A activities should have no doubts about the positive impact on employee engagement and organizational performance that results from focusing on the human side of acquisitions and change.
