Franklin Gutierrez is a late scratch, still suffering from the stomach flu that knocked him out of the game in the second inning last night. Ryan Langerhans takes his place, batting seventh, and Michael Saunders moves from left to center. Josh Wilson, who had been seventh in the order, moves up to sixth.

Ryan Rowland-Smith has a tough act to follow after complete-game gems by Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez. According to Elias, those two are only the third pair of teammates to toss complete game wins against the Yankees in the Bronx on back-to-back days since 1985. Roger Clemens and Al Nipper did it for the Red Sox in 1987 as did Mark Langston and Jim Abbott for the Angels in 1991.

"We have good depth in the yullpen, but hopefully he watched a little bit what was going on the last two nights and takes something from that,'' Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said of Rowland-Smith. "The pattern with their offense the last two days has been they have been fairly patient early to get the pitch-count up, and later in the ballgame, once there is a deficit, they try to make up by being aqggressive.

"More than anything, you talk about getting ahead of hitters. It will be critical that he get ahead of the hitters and not be too fine. No matter where you are pitching or pitching against, that is a good formula.''

I have a community tank with neon tetras, red platies, black and silver mollies, glofish, pleco, octos, cory cats, and a guppy female. You think a Betta would be ok or would it kill my fish. I tried to get all fish that are not fin nippers. Its a 29 gallon high with excellent filtration. I do water changes so im not worried bout water quality. You think the betta would be ok in there. Also I purchased a few cardinal tetras but they are scraping themselves on the driftwood and gravel but they only seem to do it after they eat. I see no white spots on them and purchased some parasite clear tank tablets but they are still doing it. I raised the temp, I always add salt since i have black molly's. What could this be? cause now my panda cory's are doing it. But its only after they eat...

P-Plater crabs and dawn walks

Someone (naming no names) omitted to tell my legs that this getting fit idea involved them. Actually, that same someone also forgot to mention how hard it is to get out of a nice warm bed, from next to cuddly wife to go out into the pale predawn and take a brisk walk. I'll find him one day (this someone) and we will have words. Anyway, as you can see by the picture I did this thing. It's about 2km down to the beach, and a lot of it is down a little back track.

There was a spectacular loniliness to the beach - Mr Somebody had obviously forgotten to tell anyone else. The sky was grey and overcast, and the tide was already fairly far out. The diffuse soft light made it look like the opening shots for one of these angsty movies... except they would have some gulls or peewits or some fowl creature doing haunting cries, or played suitable mood music. Instead we had the Black Oyster-catchers making noises like off-pitch elderly cricket phones. I'm a biologist and a forager (and I am never too sure which trumps which) so sand and mud-flats and low tides hold a fascination for me, and I put the fitness walk back on hold for a wade-and-fossick. The sand above the tideline was suspiciously dimpled. Now sand patterns are caused by the washing of the waves... and the sea, well she has no sense of humour. A very serious thing is the sea, and don't you forget it. She'll leave ripples or fans or layers on the sand yes, but dimples no. Dimples mean something is living there, and neither the biologist nor the forager minded me digging. I like to understand these foodwebs (because what looks like desolate mud is a seething arcology of life. Some of which you don't want to eat, and some which you don't want to know. Digging and sorting produced some tiny wedge shells - too small for dinner for me, but considered utterly yummy to some tiny pea-crabs (which should maybe be called p-crabs (you have p-plater drivers here in Tassie), because when they get bigger they'll be crabs. At the moment they're just greedy clam-eating hoons, so busy scoffing the free grub that they didn't even notice me pick the shell. When I put it down they were very embarrassed and shook down into the sand, just eystalks protruding. So I left them to get over it and walked on. The shallow water is full of little pimple-mounds with holes in the top, that something must live in. There are different burrows in between, and every now and again, scooped out basins of slightly deeper water, with scatters of shells - stingrays methinks. I need to get down there earlier, with a torch. Yes, now that you mention it, a lot of people do think that I am barking mad. This is not true. I leave all the barking to Roland -Old English Sheepdogs just do it better.

I lifted some drifts of seaweed from pools saw a couple of tiny translucent shrimp shaking their nippers and yelling "Homewrecker" at me before I put it back and walked back through a few spatters of rain. There were snails out on the driveway - I didn't have to walk to the beach to find molluscs, so it thought I'd better check the veg before settling in to write. The mouse that had been digging up my pea-shoots had had me set a trap inbetween them.

Unfortunately, he must have brought big brother along, because the trap was conspicuous by its absence. And to pay me back for my impertinence, it had dug up a round dozen broad beans that had just germinated.

So: Once I found the trap (on the far side of the garden) I planted some more, and went back to my desk job. Spies in 16 th century Venice right now. Talk about shifting worlds. But it's actually come out well this morning so maybe the walk did me good.

Reflection
The island is looking at the idea of having a community garden, so that fresh veggies and fruit do not need to be either flown or ferried in. This is a very good idea, everyone seems to think so, but who is to control it? I think blood will be shed, before that is decided, even if it is just a bloody nose. The garden has not been funded, never mind the land allocated, yet, but already the power struggles are beginning. I think there is going to be a lot of fun in store on this subject. But we saw and spoke to a lot of new people at the meeting last night, and, of course the TV guru, who was trying to keep the peace. Unfortunately I have not watched enough Australian TV to have seen one of his programmes, but I will look out for him in future, as he seems really knowledgeable, likeable and level headed.

Our son Paddy took part in a University residence competition to make an advertisement for Gillette razors, they came second and won a microwave for the residence. I am having a quiet day today, with a blank canvas, and just reflecting on how life has changed, from shopping to catching, from mountains to sea, from surrounded by family to isolated, from a complicated garden to a small flat rectangle. I am realizing just how happy I am. There are low points, or course, no place or lifestyle is absolutely perfect, but this is as close to idyllic as I could ever hope to get.

The galleon
Our ship finally came in. By plane, via the airport. In the post in a cardboard box. It was intact, so we had to blow it up. If you are not confused already its model is called 'Zambezi - Australia'. And says it was proudly made in China. Ah, the wonders of modern geography. They say it is a small mixed up world. I didn't realise how right they were.

The inflatable Kayak arrived, as you may gather. We took it down for a paddle and a quick swim. It's not quite the disaster area I had a sneaking suspicion it might be, but I won't be taking it miles offshore for a day's fishing.
But it's a start.

I also popped into the hospital to have an anti-tet shot after an unprovoked attack by a vicious fishhook.

The town has been invaded by aliens from Shamrockia or it's St Patrick's day.
It's obviously taken quite seriously here, which is rather nice, considering that a lot of Australians have Irish antecedants... and this could hardly be further from Ireland.

Homes and other people's gardens

Ok perhaps I exaggurate just a trifle, but with dug in wombat proofing, wooden pallisade wallaby proofing, a metal slide rim for the possums and a final bird-net layer, there are less secure houses in Johannesburg. It was a fascinating trip around some very impressive gardens. In a nutshell (or at least Fort Knox) - you can grow almost anything on Flinders (there are soil issues, and bugs etc, but it is a temperate climate, which is not too extreme.) But there are a lot of volunteers eager to help you with redistributing the produce. It was fascinating however to see the different approaches - and levels of success in different people's gardens. I learned that soil can be over-enriched, which I hadn't known, and saw several neat ideas. The trip was also fascinating for the inveterate people-watcher like me, with a cross section of islanders who grow veggies - from the humble back garden patch to things that cost more than your average family car to set up. A frightening number of them said "Oh you're the new South Africans in John's place." I began to feel a little like the new giraffe at the zoo, only less interesting. We'd been told to bring a 'cut lunch'. I was good. I did not explain that we Africans liked to cut ours fresh, and could we have the attendees list to browse over. It was time away from the desk and writing, but worthwhile in terms of learning what would grow and what we'd have to do.

And what not to do. Heh. Local wisdom has it that you bury a dead critter (sheep, wallaby, feral pig) under each fruit tree. The vivacious owner of a large and struggling orchard/garden describing the process... "you know, legs and arms coming off and maggots spilling." Fancy some fruit from that tree?! At least we savages butcher our enemies on the spot before burying them under the corner posts of our buildings without having to drag disintegrating bits. Anyway Josh Byrne assured us this was a bad idea and anerobic fermentation would have a detrimental effect on the roots, to say nothing of the acidification of the soil from all the puking at the bouquet and charming sights.

This one however was a life lesson to me.

It was probably the best and most productive of the gardens... and a charming lady of 96 kept it... by herself.
She also teaches Scottish dancing.

Flounders Keepers
á la meunière means 'miller's wife style', or dusted with flour and then fried in shallow oil, rather than tossed in the dung heap as you may have thought if your grasp of French is similar to mine. I owe this fact to our elderly Time-Life 'Fish and Shellfish' edited by Richard Olney and long out of print. Having moved out of home unable to boil an egg (Remember I grew up in South Africa in an era where 1)most men didn't cook (other than to burn meat on the braai (barbeque)) 2)Servants were a norm in any middle-class household, and certainly any 'white' one.) and finding myself living with someone I was very much in love with... but who had even less of an idea about how to cook, and having a moral objection to paying someone less than I would be prepared to do the job for - which would have meant paying a cook my entire salary at that time, I learned to cook out of these books. They're in the old French style of cooking - and the old methods too. There is no such thing in these books as a short cut, if a recipe called for chicken stock, it involved boiling a chicken carcass with a bouquet garni. Being me I learned the short-cuts pretty rapidly, but not before learning to do it the hard real way. And learning to do it all very quickly, because at 22 you're both impatient and really hungry by supper time...

As time has worn on I find my cooking has gradually leaned away from the French towards rustic Italian in style, but I'm still obsessed with fresh ingredients, quality and often as minimalist as possible (yes I can hear a lot old friends packing up laughing and wondering how I can sit and type with my pants on fire) - but prettying up food a little takes seconds and you enjoy as much with all your senses as you do with your mouth. And one man's complex is another's simple. If you think about it I focus on bringing out the best flavours in something. If it isn't up to much you do have to lift it... but tradition is dead right on sole (or by extention, flounder)á la meunière is the right way to do fine fish, where you really want to taste and savour the fish. Flounder can be cooked skin-on, just remember (Luke) you must go to the dark side first. It's thicker and slightly curved. These flounder were pretty well pan-sized, just a few centimeters over the legal limit. I dusted them with flour, salt and fresh Tasmanian native pepper (I am getting really fond of this spice. Oddly even ordinary black ground pepper Australia seems to be better quality and fresher and more flavourful than South African, which is not something I could say about the dried fruit mix. What's all this rubbish in there? Green blobs belong in primordial oceans, not in fruit-cake mix).
Shallow frying fish needs high heat, and seriously, that's where I disgree with my classical French recipe. Olive oil is not good for fierce heat frying, and neither is clarified butter. I use rice-bran oil (because I bought it out of curiousity) for this but sunflower or canola are fine too. We come back to the difficult bit of cooking a fish perfectly - and at least these flounder are close to the same thickness. The joy here is that I'm not cooking for a restaurant client that I have to humour and be nice to. It's OK to have a tiny piece (less than the size of a five cent piece and about as thick) not quite cooked up against the spine right against the head, if not cooking it is going to mean the rest is just perfectly done, and Ms. Fussbudget is not going to send it back to the kitchen to get overdone. I didn't marry Ms. Fussbudget, and B knows the choices :-) If you don't like my cooking you can cook for yourself.

Anyway, the greenback flounder was superb. It's delicately textured, clean flaking rich little fish (probably lots of those omega 3 oils), with almost a hint of sweetness to it. It comes off the bone easily and even the skin is good. We had a salad of lettuce thinnings, pumpkin seeds and island tomato (and I'll leave out the tomato next time.) and baby potatoes with it, and I pronounced it the second best meal I have had on the island. Worth going out in the dark with a spear for.

Tomorrow we are going on a bus-tour! (before you die of shock, this is organised by the local council and will go to various gardens to look at the possibility of organising a community garden for the Island. Some bloke called Josh Byrne - I gather a TV gardener? - will be there.) I will get to steal with my eyes again ;-) It's worth going on a bus tour for - which also means I should not be writing about cooking, but about Hekate.

Hunting and the hunter
Imagine, if you can, being out in the sea -- knee deep maybe, but two hundred yards from shore on a 'dark' - a moonless night, a smuggler's night. The looming bulk of Strzeleki mountain blacks out a part of the sky. The rest of it is spiked with a shawl of fairy-light stars, and the sky is so clear that they seem close. It almost looks as if you could poke one of them with your flounder-spear and short out the whole lot. The sea, silent and just about as black as the mountain is lit by four tiny patches of underwater light. We're out hunting the hunter -- and a very unusual hunter it is too. Okay so I'm an ichthyologist so I would think so, but flounders (or soles) are weird with eyes that have migrated onto one side of their heads. They are the hunters of the shallow sand and mud flats where there is no cover and prawns and crabs and shoals of little needle-nose garfish think they are safe from ambush. Not so. The master of camoflage is lurking... and we're out in the dark doing something probably as ancient as humanity, trying to spear fish.



Okay so we're trying an art that was old before neolithic fish-hooks, that was common (and still practiced today)in ancient Greece. We do have an underwater light and not a piece of burning pitch-pine, and, rather than a poseidon-style trident off a Greek vase, a multipronged spear polycarbon spear (although Rex is still using a trident with a wooden shaft). To make up for this we have John-boy turning the light away just as you are ready to spear, and laughing like a drain at your cursing. It's still something humans have done forever, really (probably the turning the light away too). It fits in well to my ideas on self-sufficiency. Besides that there is something really very special about being out in the middle of the bay and having another flounderer come past "how many yer got?"
"Aw, 'bout seventy. n'you?"
"Yeah, 'bout that. It's a bad night."
(needless to say the real score is about 3 at this stage.)
I tried (and failed) to catch the needlelike garfish swimming into the pool of light with my hands. And caught a large swimming prawn... which like the idiot I am, I dropped. Barbs was better at spearing than I am, although I probably have the edge in spotting rocks that I thought looked like flounders.
Then back to gut and bag flounders and have the hot coffee we were dying for... somewhere near midnight we finally crawled into bed.
Flounders tonight for our tea (that means supper in other parts).

We left the island

We got to Flinders on 14 January, and now today, 13 March, we left the island for the first time. We had the most fantastic fishing trip out to catch flathead. Yes, the boats all around us caught more, some by a factor of 10, but we had a calm, cloudy day, so not too much sunburn, a calm sea, so no seasickness, and a wonderful view. There were small islands all round us, we landed on Kangaroo island, and had a look at some muttonbird chicks, and a small penguin.



But to me the best part of the day, was just being out on the sea, in a little "tinny" boat, catching some fish with a handline, (a new method of fishing for me!) and the good company. The chat between the boats, was fun, with one of the other boats even lending us some special tackle to we could catch more!

We have got 7 meals worth of flathead to eat, and had a really terrific morning, and seen the island from a whole new perspective! The mountains appear a lot higher from the sea.

Op het treinstation Utrecht Centraal voeren enkele honderden schoonmakers actie voor een betere CAO. Gisteren voerden ook al zo'n 400 man actie op het station. Vannacht hielden zo'n 50 schoonmakers op het station de wacht. Ze hebben papieren snippers in de hal gegooid.

The youth centre was packed with whatever they're called these days. The 10-15-year-old Non-Voting Pre-Constituency. Temporally Disadvantaged Persons. "Kids." I got in without a CRB check, I hope someone will be prosecuted for that. I could have been anyone.

I use this tool all the time, but rarely have I ever heard any two people refer to it by the same name. "Wire cutters" is what I called them growing up, but since then I have heard "diagonal cutters," "diagonal pliers," "diags," "side cutters," "side cutting pliers," "snips," "snippers," "dog-nips," the easily-misinterpreted "strippers," and the downright offensive "nips" and "dikes" (which apparently upsets Dutch people for some reason). So I'm starting a collection. Have I missed anything? What do you call them?

 Before I get into the spec today, today is my daughter Jasmyne's 2nd Birthday...my my how time flies.
All is pretty quiet for today’s update, though I have updated some of the info on the smaller conference winners. I was deeply disappointed that Quinnipiac lost in the NEC final and the "Nippers" were denied their first NCAA bid That makes my smaller conference projection that much more scattershot. Springpad, a rival to Evernote's popular cross-platform note-taking service, has just bumped the competition up a notch with a new release that integrates semantic technology to automatically enhance the notes you save with relevant info. What this means is that if you save a movie, Springpad is smart enough to know it's a movie and it will offer you showtimes. If you save a product, Springpad displays price comparisons and links to shopping sites. Save a recipe and you get menu suggestions. And the list goes on. In other words, Springpad doesn't want to just be a note-taking app, it wants to be a fully realized digital assistant.

Evernote vs Springpad: the iPhone App

While Evernote is, at this point, still the more robust product when it comes to supported platforms -the company offers Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and Blackberry versions in addition to a platform-agnostic "web clipper" - Springpad is starting to catch up. Along with the numerous enhancements launching today, the company now offers their own "web clipper" browser bookmarklet (previously in beta) along with an iPhone application for mobile note-taking and reminders.

Like Evernote's iPhone app, Springpad's app (iTunes link) lets you input text or snap a photo, but it also integrates a barcode scanner which takes advantage of the phone's camera in order to record and save a specific product. In addition, the iPhone app lets you browse items by type in case there's something you want to remember, but don't have it right in front of you. This is ideal for adding things like restaurants or movies - the sort of things that come up in conversation ("You really should rent this movie - it's great!") but are later forgotten as we return to our busy lives.

The Smart Web Clipper Knows What You're Bookmarking

Also new today is the web clipper. Now out of beta, this bookmarking tool lets you save anything you see on the Internet to your notes. This can be a product, a restaurant, a book, a movie, a recipe, a wine, a business or just a simple bookmark of a page which you can choose to annotate if desired.

What's different about this tool is the way it uses semantic technology to understand what it is that you're saving and offer relevant links to other information when you view it again in Springpad. For example, after adding a recipe, you'll be provided with "quick links" for actions like "add to shopping list," "search for coupons," "send to me" (an email option) and "print recipe." You can also add your own notes or personal tags (e.g., "March dinner party") if desired.

The App Store: Do Something with your Notes

Springpad users also have an included app store that helps you do things with the items you save. Although not listed among today's updates, this is arguably one of the company's standout features which should appeal both to new users or those switching from Evernote. Instead of just providing a searchable repository of notes and saved items, Springpad lets you add apps that help you actually do something with the items you collected. There's a wine notebook for those who want to record wine reviews and selections, a weekly meal planner for recipe snippers, a movie tracker for film aficionados, a travel checklist for vacation planning and even a blog post planner for scribes like us. And there are dozens more, too. Additionally, later this year, Springpad will launch an API for developers who want to build their own apps for this directory.

More of What's New: Sharing Tools & a Smart Quick-Add Bar

Other new features today include social sharing option which lets you post to Facebook and Twitter, a personalized email address for sending in thoughts, notes, itineraries and confirmation numbers, and a smart "quick-add bar." This bar lets you type in anything into Springpad's web interface to receive a list of suggestions from across a number of web services and the publicly shared notes from other Springpad users. If you find yourself always coming across suggestions from particular users, you may want to "friend" them on Springpad. The friending model used here is one that mimics Twitter's involving one-way connections betweens followers and "followees." This makes Springpad more social than Evernote without the pressures of having to accept or reject requests like on Facebook.

As of now, Springpad has a lot to offer those interested in a web-based and mobile note-taking application. However, you may find Evernote to be a slightly more stable service. We ran into a couple of slowdowns when using Springpad's website today. In addition, the suggestions displayed in the quick-add bar aren't as speedy as your typical search engine's autosuggest feature is. However, if you're looking to do more with your notes than simply collect them, Springpad is shaping up to be a viable alternative to Evernote. It's no longer a mere note-taking app - it's more of a digital assistant...and who couldn't use one of those?

These days, there are only two things that even begin to rival the hatred that Maryland students have for Duke University.  One of them is the ridiculous amount of snow left over from recent storms that absolutely refuses to melt.  The other?  Mid-term exams.

 

The Situation

As you might have guessed by now, the Blue Devils (25-4, 12-2 ACC) are Public Enemy No. 1 this week and will surely be the center of attention on Wednesday night as they take on the Terrapins (21-7, 11-3 ACC) in College Park with the ACC title and their top five national ranking hanging in the balance.  The Terps lost 77-56 in their first meeting with Coach K's kids in Durham on February 13, but they rebounded from that loss surprisingly well.

The Terps proceeded to win five in a row after the loss, including victories over conference heel-nippers Georgia Tech (on a buzzer beater no less) and Clemson at home and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg (in double overtime).  Since the loss at Duke, Maryland has shot 48 percent from the field and nearly 45 percent from behind the arc; they have also rallied from deficits of 10 (on the road at NC State) and 15 (against Clemson) to close out two nine-point wins, which speaks to their resilience, perseverance, and ability to make adjustments at halftime.

 

The Plan
 
In order to win, they will have to out-shoot the Blue Devils and place them foul trouble in order to put pressure on Duke's shallow bench.

In Duke's last two losses (all four have come on the road, by the way), their opponents (NC State and Georgetown) have shot a laser-like 58 percent and 71 percent respectively from the floor, though neither opponent won the rebound battle.  The Blue Devil starters compiled 32 fouls over those two games, an average of 16 per game or just more than three per player.  Drawing contact may not keep Duke's best three players off the floor (Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler, and Jon Scheyer each average over 17 points and 35 minutes per game), but it will make them play more carefully on defense, which can allow Maryland to be more physical and aggressive on offense.

The knocks on the Terrapins are that they don't have the size to hang with the Blue Devils on the inside, and they can't keep the Big Three from doing significant damage.  It's true that seven-footer Brian Zoubek mauled the Terps inside (16 points, 17 rebounds) in the last meeting. It's also true that Scheyer, Singler, and Smith combined for nearly 60 percent of Duke's points on February 13.

The fact is, if Maryland is lights-out from the floor, none of that will matter.  NC State lost the rebound battle by 15 (no player had more than five), and they won the game by 14.  Georgetown let the Triplets rack up 54 points (70 percent of Duke's scoring) and won by 12.

 

The Aftermath

This game can be had.  For the Terrapins, it's hit or miss.  If they can take this game and beat Virginia on Saturday, the Terps will be rooting hard for North Carolina to pull the upset against their familiar Tobacco Road foes.  A Tar Heels win would have Maryland take home the regular season crown.

Neftali Feliz burst onto the scene last season, posting a 1.74 ERA, 39 strikeouts, and a 0.68 WHIP in 20 relief appearances for the Rangers. A top starting prospect in the minors, it seems that Feliz would have very little value to standard fantasy leagues if he doesn't earn a spot in the starting rotation for the Rangers. This leaves me with 2 questions:

1. What are the chances that Feliz will earn a starting rotation spot for the Rangers?
2. Does he have value for fantasy purposes if he doesn't?

According to the Rangers' depth chart on MLB.COM, Feliz is currently listed as a member of the bullpen. The depth chart also lists 7 pitchers in the current starting rotation:

• Colby Lewis
• Derek Holland
• Tommy Hunter
• Brandon McCarthy
• Matt Harrison

A gaggle of candidates are in Surprise, Ariz., now to compete for that spot. The current foursome does not include a left-hander, possibly giving an early edge to Derek Holland, Matt Harrison and C.J. Wilson. But general manager Jon Daniels has made it clear that the best pitcher will get the job and it won't simply be handed to a lefty.

The good news for the Rangers is that this shows how much more depth they've developed among the pitching staff. Besides Holland, Harrison and Wilson, Brandon McCarthy will get a shot to compete. So will flamethrower Neftali Feliz. Doug Mathis and Dustin Nippert are probably more long-relief options.

He's going to be given a chance it sounds like, but I would be surprised if he won the job. He's going to have to outpitch that group, and overcome the fact that the first 4 starters are also right-handed like Feliz. But that doesn't mean he is without value for fantasy purposes.

Feliz posted a 11.32 strikeout per 9 rate in his limited appearances in 2009, and I think that he could conceivably top that if he's left in the bullpen. He's not slated to be the closer, as that job is Frank Francisco's. But if you're employing a strategy which involves punting saves, Feliz is a pitcher I would definitely target. He's going to strikeout between 11 and 12 batters per 9 I believe, and will probably be the first or second in line for saves for the Rangers if he stays in the bullpen. He's going to provide value regardless of the role he plays for the Rangers, and is worth watching in Spring Training.

It was given to me after my grandmother passed away. My grandparents bought it brand new in 1963.

RCA Victor Total Sound Stereo Orthophonic High Fidelity Model IVF 1505 with a RCA Chassis RC-1205. AM/FM with stereo broadcasts. It can also play any monophonic record. Had options for an external tape recorder and total sound speaker system. The record player could play up to 12 10 inch same speed records. If the attached spindle was used it could play 15-45rpm records. The RCA player had cosmetic scratches on the top and one area on the right corner that popped out when moving. It is about 2" square. I had to piece it back with wood glue. The player and radio still play and it gives great rich sound. I'm not sure of the value but it can be of great value for someone who is willing to refinish the top and get a new record player needle. Other than those minor defects the system is in good condidion.

Did you know that any book, regardless of it’s social status and intellectual cache, can be reduced to fascination levels previously achieved only by lukewarm yogurt? So true: just summarize the plot points badly. For example:

Jesus’ half-baked buddy gets all asshurt when he’s forced to live in a motel and write his memoirs.

Three women living in the rural South explore the many layers of life women face living in the rural South.

I think my kid killed someone.

Some guy dies in a cave.

So yeah, doing the same to romances? First, not a review. I don’t think you’ve read the books in question past the back cover copy. Poor dear, was that all you could manage?

Second, still not funny.

Third, that’s the best you got? Come on, I got half a flask left here. 

Tangent Question: which is easier to mock, NASCAR or romance? I think it may be a close tie, but both parties are going to laugh all the way to the bank so you have fun with your flaccid humor.

NASCAR and romance have a lot in common, though: dismissed by outsiders as dreck for the unintelligent, yet made up of fascinatingly brilliant people with incredible intellect and creativity.

Last night I was part of a panel discussion filmed for Media7's first episode of 2010 on the ratings battle at 7pm: Campbell Live vs Close Up.

The other panellists are media consultant Brian Edwards and Matt Nippert from the Herald on Sunday - the reporter behind the recent speculation that Campbell Live may face the axe.

I had a great time and it was great to meet Brian after having recently exchanged comments on the same topic on his blog.  There's a funny recent summary of stories on both programmes at the start.

The good news: TV3 have confirmed that Campbell Live will definitely not be axed this year.

DECEMBER 30th, 2010 Headin’ for Guana! Suppose it’s a good time to start my trip blog. My wife Cherie  and I and Dave (Diver 763) and his wife Kathy are going to spend 10 days on Great Guana Cay, Abacos, Bahamas, return to the states and spend another 10 days roaming out of Ocala. We plan on meeting my In-Laws on the Island and will do a few dives off their 24ft pocket cruiser.  We hope they make it over as the weather has to be perfect for them to make the crossing, if they don’t make it we will most likely meet them in the keys and spend a few days diving around with them before continuing on to Ocala. We have a few dives planned with Troy Albury of Dive Guana as well as some shore dives right in front of the house we have rented. Dave and Kathy have never been to the Bahamas before so they will have a treat that they will remember for many years. Cherie and I have been on the island and surrounding areas 4 other times in the last 15 years and dearly love the place and the people. Life on Great Guana is rather laid back.  If you want partying and night life, you picked the wrong spot. There are a few small resorts on the island but they are not even close to the hot spots of say, Nassau. The best known “hot spot” is Nippers. Most every Sunday there is a huge pig roast that draws people far and wide. Good food, live music and lots of booze. Not to say there isn’t a lot to do there but the “Out Islands” all run on “Island Time” which is much slower than most people are used to. There is a small but very well stocked grocery store, a small liquor store where you can buy just about any spirit you like as well as ice and the Bahamian beer called Kalik. There is a Batelco office (Bahamas phone company) a church and a fire/recue department; just the basics with a population of less than 200. Like I said, very quiet and laid back. To get to the Abaco and “Out Islands”, one must endure a short 1 hour flight from just about any of the major Central to South Florida coast airports. I say endure due to the fact that you fly in a somewhat smaller version of aircraft that you are used to unless you do a lot of regional flying from small airport to small airport. Most of the aircraft are of the Canadian Dash 7 and Dash 8 aircraft that typically have 15-30 seats.  Think small, think light and think chummy as there isn’t a lot of room on these flights.  Most flights are no more than an hour but if the weather is rough, be prepared for an interesting flight. My Father-in-Law and I flew into Nassau in September of 1999 on the tail end of Tropical Storm Harvey right after Hurricane Floyd ran over the top of Marsh Harbor, Abacos, Bahamas. We had to make the trip to salvage his 45 ft Chris Craft that had been torn up by Floyd. We left Miami in a heavy rain storm that was punctuated by thunder and lightning. To make a looong story short, the flight crew tried to serve us a drink and gave up as we would hit an air pocket and suddenly drop 200-300 feet every few minutes and the wings were pitching up and down and all the passengers could do was tighten their seatbelts as tight as possible and complete the “white knuckle” ride. We greased onto the runway at Nassua in one of the most impressive landings I have ever been a witness to.  I must say though that since that flight, every flight has been quite pleasant. I’ll try to keep adding to this blog daily but may skip a few days here and there , I’ll keep checking in the closer it gets and make a few entries up till it’s time to leave…… Can I go NOW????   JANUARY  1st 2010 Dropped off regs and BCD’s at Big Horn Divers in Kalispell, Montana for annuals. Local hair and beauty students tasted success at the AHT (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) North West Area final this week. Four students from South Cheshire College all won prizes in different categories when they went head-to-head with students from colleges across the North West. Student stylist Luke Millington landed first prize in the Commercial Cut and Blow competition (Rebekah James pictured modelling the winning style), and Amy Sant, Emily Pointon and Emma Serridge finished second, third and fourth respectively in the Catwalk Make-up competition. Two hair students and six beauty students were entered into the competition, which took place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. Well done all...

Those glazed eyes. That feisty demeanor. And oh, the twitchy bliss. Clearly, someones been dipping into the herb again. Not that herb, but the kitty herb of choice: Catnip!

Growing your own kitty psychedelic is not only less expensive then the pre-packaged variety; it's a connoisseurs delight (at least as far as kitty is concerned). Many local pet stores now stock the live plants for your growing convenience. Harvesting and drying catnip is something any pet owner can easily do.

Harvesting Catnip
Nepeta Cataria, or Catnip, is a herbaceous, perennial herb that can be found growing in the wilds of North America. This hearty relative of the mint family is incredibly easy to grow. About the only problem you'll have is finding a place to plant it that is inaccessible to your cats! The chemical nepetalactone is what triggers the familiar and predictable response in our four-footed friends, but lesser known is the calming effect that some believe it has on humans as well. For this reason, many alternative practitioners regularly recommend catnip as a beneficial tea to soothe the nerves. Though, according to the website Drug.com, there hasn't been scientific research to support this claim.

Catnip typically grows to a height of about three feet and is ready to harvest when it's reached about a foot tall. Don't feel you must wait until any official harvest, however; pinching small quantities from it throughout the growing season will not only help the plant fill out, but is a great way to give kitty a sample of what's to come. Extra pinches can be thrown into a wide-mouthed jar and left to dry on their own.
