BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today announced the 2011 field staffs for each of their six minor league teams.

The announcement of managers, coaches and athletic trainers was made by Director of Player Development Mike Hazen.

The Red Sox have added one new individual for assignment in the 2011 field staff alignment, hiring Paul Abbott as the pitching coach at Short-A Lowell.

Today's rumours don't like to talk about their charity work

The day's top sporting headline in the Sun concerns Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to ban his players from sporting snoods. "They're for powder puffs," he is alleged to have roared at his startled squad as they shivered neck-warmerlessly in Lancashire's icy wastelands this week, adding: "Real men don't wear things like that."

In the day's shock transfer news, Asamoah Gyan emerged as a surprise target for Real Madrid as they seek someone to replace the permacrocked Gonzalo Higuaín. Also on José Mourinho's striking shortlist are Werder Bremen's Hugo Almeida, Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko and Manchester City's wantaway Emmanuel Adebayor.

Fulham are all set to take a good look at Mexican international goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa when he comes on trial, with the possibility of a bargain basement January deal for the Club America stopper as his contract tick-tocks to oblivion. The bad news is that Mark Hughes looks likely to lose his figurative armwrestle with Blackburn's Sam Allardyce for the services of David Bentley.

Back to goalkeepers, then, and highly-rated Atlético Madrid shot-stopper David De Gea is dreaming of Old Trafford. "I know Sir Alex Ferguson has watched me already," he said. "After this season we will look at what happens. I owe Atletico everything and I would love to stay, but on the other hand Manchester United are a great club."

West Ham want Joey Barton to lead them out of the relegation mire and are mulling over a £3m January bid. Another London-bound midfielder is Partizan Belgrade's 21-year-old Serbian international Radoslav Petrovic, whose agent is trying to find an English buyer and appears to have struck predictable paydirt in the shape of Tottenham's Harry Redknapp.

Aston Villa's Curtis Davies is a popular man, featuring as he does on the shopping lists at Werder Bremen, Bolton, Wolves, Leicester and Stoke, who have had to give up on a permanent deal for Jermaine Pennant because of Real Zaragoza's price tag. "He won't be coming to Stoke for £6m, it's just ridiculous. It's too much money," Tony Pulis correctly deduced.

Everton want £2m Barnsley winger Adam Hammill, while Nottingham Forest hope an identical fee could prise striker Steve Morison from Millwall. In other news from outside the Premier League, QPR want Swindon pair Sean Morrison and Charlie Austin, while Roy Keane has hired a psychologist in an attempt to arrest Ipswich's dismal decline. "The Championship can be mental," he said.

The Dutchman, pushing 40, has said he will soon be making a decision on his retirement, and Manchester United scouts are hard at work in the knowledge that the club's most successful years have been with a top-class stopper between the posts.

It took a while for Alex Ferguson to replace Peter Schmeichel, with the likes of Massimo Taibi, Mark Bosnich, Fabien Barthez and Tim Howard tried before Van der Sar proved to be the only one worthy of filling the big Dane's gloves.

And so United will be keen to ensure the Dutchman doesn't take as long to replace.

Manchester United have reportedly put Ajax Amsterdam and Holland stopper Maarten Stekelenburg , FC Schalke 04 and Germany keeper Manuel Neuer as well as the young Atletico Madrid sensation David De Gea top of their wish list

All three are excellent stoppers. Stekelenburg is going from strength to strength at the Dutch outfit and was one of the stars of the World Cup.  Neuer may be playing for a struggling side at present but he is a proven 'keeper of international experience. And what hasn't been said of De Gea? Van Der Sar himself has tipped the extremely talented young Spaniard for stardom.

He is supremely confident, has amazing instincts, great aerial ability and is excellent in one-on-one situations. He commands his penalty box like a top-class stopper should, and is without a doubt material for a top European club. He has been compared to the great Lev Yashin. He generally has a good mentality, but sometimes loses his composure. He has spoken of his desire to move to the Premier League and has said he favours a move to either Arsenal or Manchester United.

An extremely reliable goalkeeper who keeps getting better. He offers authority, agility and sharp reflexes. Benaglio's height means he is very commanding in his area and excellent on crosses. He also has great one-on-one technique.  Benaglio was made Switzerland's first-choice goalkeeper for Euro 2008. He has a great mentality and was a key figure in Wolfsburg's Bundesliga title triumph in 2008–09.

The cheapest option of the lot, but Ochoa is a keeper of undeniable quality. He has excellent handling, reactions and anticipation.  He also has amazing flexibility, great positional sense and is superb in one-on-one situations.  Ochoa is a brave stopper with a strong character. Manchester United were actually in negotiations with America in 2008 about bringing Ochoa to Old Trafford but the deal fell through.

Age:  24

Club: Lazio Roma

Nationality:  Uruguayan

Height: 1.9m / 6.23ft.

Weight: 74kg / 162lbs

Estimated market value: €5M-7.5M

Another relatively cheap option for Ferguson. Muslera is a young goalkeeper with tons of potential and talent to reach the highest levels. Muslera's main quality is his shot-stopping abilities—he has excellent reflexes and is a superb at saving penalties due to this virtue. The Uruguayan keeper is also good in one-on-one situations due to his good understanding of the game, anticipation skills and speed—as he is quite light relative to his height.  When he arrived in Italy, his agent said, "Lazio have bought the new Buffon." However, Muslera didn't impress in his first full season in 2008/2009, and it wasn't until the 2009/2010 campaign that he made his breakthrough, especially at the 2010 World Cup, during which he shone between the posts for Uruguay and was the penalty king against Ghana.

He is very strong in the air, at ease on his line and shows a lot of quality in his reflexes. He has near-perfect distribution and is a reassuring presence for his defence.

La Exposición Universal de Shanghái se prepara para acoger la semana dedicada a Aragón del lunes, 28 de junio, al domingo, 4 de julio, con una programación especial dedicada a esta Comunidad autónoma, en la que se incluye un espectáculo musical, proyecciones audiovisuales y actos institucionales.

Los actos, que contarán con la asistencia del consejero de Presidencia, Javier Velasco, comenzarán el lunes con un encuentro entre una delegación de empresarios aragoneses y empresarios chinos con el objetivo de fortalecer relaciones comerciales.

El martes, la delegación aragonesa visitará el ICEX, que acoge una oficia de Aragón Exterior. En este encuentro, los empresarios podrán conocer las posibilidades de negocio que ofrece China y qué cauces son los más apropiados para establecer vínculos comerciales.

El miércoles, día 30, tendrán lugar los actos de celebración del Día de Honor de Aragón, con un acto institucional en el recinto expositivo, que incluye un recorrido por los pabellones de China y España, con la asistencia del embajador de España en China, Carlos Blasco, y de la comisaria del pabellón de España, María Tena. Finalmente, el viernes, se desarrollará un encuentro en la Embajada en Pekín con la colonia aragonesa de esta ciudad china.

A lo largo de toda la semana, se representará varias veces por día en el auditorio del Pabellón de España el espectáculo 'Fantasía de Aragón', compuesto por tres piezas audiovisuales y un espectáculo de música y danza, realizado por Ad Hoc Gestión Cultural.

Se trata de una composición musical instrumental que viste la música tradicional aragonesa con otro ropaje musical despegado del folclore decimonónico, recogiendo referencia melódicas de las tres provincias de Aragón, según informó el Ejecutivo autónomo en un comunicado.

De clara identidad aragonesa, su autor, Gonzalo Alonso, utiliza un lenguaje musical fácilmente reconocible por cualquier tipo de público. En él, la rondalla se sustituye por el violín (Alberto Tundidor), la viola (Miguel Zarazaga), el violonchelo (Luna Ochoa) y el piano (Gonzalo Alonso).

JOTA

La jota también aparece con una nueva indumentaria creada por la firma Guillén Doz. La pareja de baile está compuesta por Alex Aldea y Sandra Aragón y la coreografía corre a cargo de Alex Aldea, con la colaboración de Amador Castilla. La fuerza de los pasos de baile y la rapidez de movimientos de la jota tradicional se dan la mano con nuevos lenguajes artísticos.

'Sinfonía de Aragón', concebida por Carlos Saura para el pabellón de Aragón en Expo Zaragoza 2008, supondrá el inicio audiovisual. Un niño, símbolo de futuro, es el protagonista de las dos otras piezas audiovisuales que componen el espectáculo.

En el primero de ellos, denominado 'Aragón', el niño introduce al espectador mediante sueños en la comunidad autónoma, mientras que en el segundo, que lleva por título 'Goya', el niño descubre al gran artista aragonés a través de los personajes de sus grabados, que cobran vida y entroncan con la realidad actual. Ambas piezas son del realizador aragonés Javier Calvo.

Por otra parte, en el exterior del pabellón de España se situará una pantalla de Leds que promocionará la candidatura a los Juegos de Invierno Zaragoza-Pirineos 2022.

De forma paralela, los visitantes del pabellón de España podrán contemplar una vitrina circular y transparente que estará presidida por una obra artística de la cabeza de Goya, realizada por el artista Óscar Sanmartín, presente también en la pieza audiovisual 'Goya'.

También se exhibirán piezas de cerámica de Teruel del taller de artesanía Domingo Punter. Con el lema 'Aragón, ciudades naturales, territorio humano', estas piezas simbolizan la creación del hombre a partir de elementos naturales, el barro y el fuego, para contener otro de los elementos imprescindibles de la naturaleza, el agua, que entronca con el hilo conductor de Expo Zaragoza 2008.

Los tejidos de la indumentaria tradicional aragonesa arropan las piezas de cerámica de este escaparate. Confeccionados en seda, quieren ser un punto de encuentro con el país anfitrión, China, que posee una tradición milenaria en la industria de ese tejido.

The Football World Cup is upon us and without a doubt we’ve all got a favorite. Whether it be a team to win each group stage or a team to triumph on the penultimate day in July, there’s surely a team close to the heart or the hip pocket. But I’m sure we’ve all had a sneaky look beyond the group stage to the knock-out games. Well, what if there’s a different result or three along the way?

It is these types of upsets that could create little air pockets of turbulence for the teams, tournament, and traveling fans. You can’t tell me that the traveling caravan of Dutch supporters haven’t looked ahead and bought tickets for the knockout rounds with the thought, and hope, that they qualify from their group in front.

Organizers and promoters are hoping for all teams to play their part and for the right teams to progress to give the fans the matches “everyone” desires. Don’t expect them to lift the coveted trophy but these 5 teams will play some good football and produce displays worth watching…

Ivory Coast

If it wasn’t for the debutant North Korea (although was North Korean striker Jong Tae-se just high on life when he claimed North Korea will land second place?), this may be the one and only group of death. Three quality teams in Brasil, Portugesa and Cote de Ivore are 3 of the favorites to win the tourney with Brazil being obvious favorites to win the group and most betting agencies have Portugal as the other team to progress.

The bookies predict Brazil and Portugal to be first and second in their group respectively, the Ivory Coast aren’t exactly without their talent. Les Elephants will be able to score a few goals by Drogba and Kalou with the supply coming from the ever impressive Barcelona dynamite Yaya Toure and co. in midfield. Behind them sit Kolo Toure, and the often flappable Emmanuel Eboue.

But one must ask the question. Are the players from Cote de Ivore that good or are Portugese just falling to pieces? Portugal only narrowly qualified for this tournament and then just recently Portugal played out an unimpressionable 0-0 draw with Cape Verde Islands. Even before this game Cristiano Ronaldo had been back pedaling recently after stating that he doesn’t “perform miracles”. I see The Elephants trumpeting over Portugal in their first match, possibly  taking a point from Brazil, and clinching the second spot of the group. Sorry C. Ronaldo and bandwagon.

Australia

Despite recent comments by injured German captain Michael Ballack stating that his men could lose to any of the 3 other nations in Group D, Germany are the team to back winning this group. The main story is the battle for the other spot in the knockout rounds with 3 strong teams duke’ing it out for one qualification place. Australia, Ghana, and Serbia won’t win the world cup but this battle for the other qualifying place is still to be played out.

Schwarzer is a rock between the sticks and won’t let through much into the onion bag. Moore and Neill are the veteran pair in the center of defence but they definitely lack speed. Australia’s physical midfield should be able to create enough of a presence to disrupt the opposition’s flow but there’s a big question mark over the one-dimensional shape (4-2-3-1) to the Socceroos that coach Pim Verbeek insists on. Cahill will be the key attacking force with support coming in dribs and drabs through players like Kewell and Kennedy.

Australia cruised through their first Asian qualification group but experience gained from the very successful (for a team like the Aussies’ standards) German 2006 campaign. USA

Well if Sir Alex says the US should do well, that is after the England game, and progress through to the round of 16, then that be it! The US of A had a wonderful 2009 Confederations Cup where Bob Bradley’s men not only beat the switched off Spain but also were leading 2-0 against the other heavyweight, Brazil, until succumbing 3-2.

Towards the back end of the team Tim Howard will be called upon more than a coach would want but I am confident in the Everton no.1. and Captain America Bocanegra should also prove reliable. The midfield is the driving force behind the US and Donavon and colleagues will get going and they should have enough stamina, pace and desire to match England for the most part and definitely get on top of Algeria and Slovenia. Up front there’s a few options but Bob Bradley shouldn’t look too far past Herculez Gomez and the versatile Clint Dempsey. If Gomez and Dempsey can bring with them their goal scoring form that they’ve displayed for Pachuca and Fulham respectively, the US should be able to send a few past the opposing no.1.

Injuries may be the deciding factor for the Stars and Stripes. The squad depth is questionable so any injuries at all will weaken their team considerably. If they remain relatively fit and injury free, I expect the US to wear that new uniform into the last 16 and give England a run for their money in the battle for Group C glory.

Cameroon

There’ll be two African nations to progress. Yes that’s right, home continent advantage. Forget the Cinderella story for South Africa, Cameroon are the best bet to qualify for the final 16. That is of course, once Samuel Eto pulls his head in and gets about his job captaining Cameroon.

It goes without saying that Eto is the man on a mission and that is to score goals; we know that they’re not going to come from many other players. The Cameroon midfield are quality and need to feed Eto and his other tireless forwards. Alexander Song has the potential to break down attacks and Jean Makoun needs to continue distributing and contributing in any way he can.

It will be the Danes to miss out and catch an early flight back but the traveling Oranje RV army will roll on as they'll cruise to the top of their group.

Mexico

Mexico are just one of those teams that you don’t want in your group. They’ve had a rocky build up but the revolving door in the coaches office seems to be stuck and Javier Aguirre is it. El Tri won’t win the World Cup and they may not make it out of their group but they are a dark horse and anything could happen with them.

Mexico vs. South Africa in the opening match. In my mind, it’s a no brainer with The hometown Boys getting stage fright. Beyond them, the Mexicans face Uruguay and France in two very competitive games. Veteran stalwart Blanco needs to bring his experienced boots with him to direct the play. Hopefully he shouldn’t have to look over his shoulder too much as he won’t have to worry about Ochoa in goals and Marquez in the defensive line, both veterans who pump out solid performances.

Mexico does lack firepower and that could be their downfall. Vela hasn’t come out of the shadows at Arsenal and youngster Dos Santos was left back on the beach with a corona in hand. But never fear! If Mexico don’t do well at all, their WAGs are sure to shine.

President Obama said, “I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to join my administration at this important time for our nation. I look forward to working with them in the coming months and years.”

President Obama announced his intent to nominate the following individuals to key administrations posts:

Stephen T. Ayers, Nominee for Architect of the Capitol
Stephen T. Ayers is Deputy Architect of the Capitol and Chief Operating Officer, a position he has held since 2005; he has served as the Acting Architect of the Capitol since February 2007.  He previously served as Superintendent of the Library Buildings and Grounds and Deputy Superintendent for the Senate Office Buildings.  Prior to joining the Architect of the Capitol in 1997, Mr. Ayers was a General Engineer with Voice of America, leading the organization’s construction efforts at several sites in Greece and Germany.  He also served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.   Mr. Ayers is a licensed architect in California, a member of the American Institute of Architects, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and an Accredited Professional in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. He completed his Master's of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture at the University of Maryland.

Eduardo M. Ochoa, Nominee for Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education, Department of Education
Dr. Eduardo M. Ochoa has served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Sonoma State University since 2003.   He is responsible for the University’s academic programs, strategic planning, and overall diversity initiative. He is also involved with the California State University Graduation Initiative. As a member of the CSU Academic Council, Dr. Ochoa contributes to CSU’s academic administration and plays a significant role in system-wide strategic planning and academic technology initiatives.   Prior to his position at Sonoma, he served for six years as Dean of the College of Business Administration at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona and for thirteen years as Professor of Economics at California State University-Los Angeles.  Dr. Ochoa is a graduate of Reed College (B.A., Physics, Philosophy), Columbia University (M.S., Nuclear Engineering), and the New School for Social Research (Ph.D., Economics).

Deborah Loewenberg Ball, Nominee for Member, National Board for Education Sciences, Department of Education
Deborah Loewenberg Ball is currently Dean of the School of Education and William H. Payne Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan. She conducts research on mathematics instruction and on professional education to improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Michigan, she was on the faculty at the College of Education at Michigan State University from 1988-1996, and an elementary classroom teacher in East Lansing, Michigan from 1976–1988. Dr. Ball has authored or co-authored over 150 publications and has lectured and made numerous major presentations around the world. Her research has been recognized with several awards and honors, and she has served on several national and international commissions and panels focused on policy initiatives and the improvement of education. She serves on the Board of the Spencer Foundation, is a trustee of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California, and was elected to membership in the National Academy of Education in 2007. Dr. Ball holds a B.A. in French and education from Michigan State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in education, with specializations in teacher education, education policy, and mathematics education, also from Michigan State University.

Adam Gamoran, Nominee for Member, National Board for Education Sciences, Department of Education
Adam Gamoran is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and Educational Policy Studies and Director of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He has been on the University faculty since 1984.  From 2001-2004, he served as chair of the department of sociology, and from 2008-2009 he served as interim dean of the School of Education.  Dr. Gamoran is an elected member of the National Academy of Education and has served on several committees of the National Research Council, including the Board on Science Education.  He also chairs the Independent Advisory Panel of the National Assessment of Career and Technical Education for the U.S. Department of Education.  Dr. Gamoran received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago.

Bridget Terry Long, Nominee for Member, National Board for Education Sciences, Department of Education
Bridget Terry Long is currently a Professor of Education and Economics at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.  Dr. Long is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a Research Affiliate of the National Center for Postsecondary Research (NCPR). As an economist specializing in the study of education, Dr. Long examines the transition from high school to higher education and beyond.  Her work focuses on college access and choice, factors that influence student outcomes, and the behavior of postsecondary institutions.  Dr. Long received the National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship and has been awarded numerous research grants and awards, including the Robert P. Huff Golden Quill Award for excellence in research and published works on student financial assistance.  Dr. Long received her Ph.D. and M.A. from the Harvard University Department of Economics and her A.B. from Princeton University.

Margaret R. (Peggy) McLeod, Nominee for Member, National Board for Education Sciences, Department of Education
Dr. Margaret R. (Peggy) McLeod is currently Executive Director of Student Services and Special Education in the Alexandria City Public Schools.  She has also worked as a consultant to national advocacy and professional organizations, universities, states, and school districts. She served as Assistant Superintendent for Special Education in the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education. In D.C., she has also served as State Title III Director, Director of the Office of Bilingual Education, Title VII Coordinator, Bilingual Program Developer, and ESL teacher. From 2002 - 2003, she served as Deputy Director of the National Organization for Bilingual Education. She worked at the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services from 1995 - 2001. In her native Puerto Rico, she taught in two Montessori schools and owned a center that provided after school services to students with disabilities.  Dr. McLeod holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Puerto Rico, an M.A. in Special Education from New York University, and an Ed.D. in Bilingual Special Education Leadership from the George Washington University.

The Moth LA holds its monthly Eastside edition tonight at El Cid. With the theme “neighborhood,” storytellers are asked to prepare a five-minute story. Reading from notes is not allowed. Hosted by Brian Finklestein, doors open at 6 pm and stories begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $7 at the door.

ART TALK
LACMA holds the panel discussion Conversations on Experimental Film in a Museum Context tonight at 7 pm. This is the first of a three-part series that examines issues and questions posed by the exhibition of time-based works and projected media in art institutions. Panelists include: Stuart Comer, Curator of Film, Tate Modern; art historian Gloria Sutton; Rita Gonzalez, Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art; and Alex Klein, Ralph M. Parsons Curatorial Fellow, Wallis Annenberg Photography Department who will also discuss artists exhibiting in multiple or unconventional venues, and the translation of works between the avant-garde cinema house and the art gallery. The event is free; tickets are required, available one hour before the program. It's being held at LACMA's Brown Auditorium.

GOURMET MAGAZINE*
Zócalo celebrates the now-defunct Gourmet magazine and invites former editors Ruth Reichl and Laurie Ochoa and former Gourmet writer Jonathan Gold to look back at the history of Gourmet, the culture it sparked, and the future of the Gourmet brand and American food writing. The event will be moderated by Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW’s Good Food. Tonight at 7:30 pm at the Skirball Center. The event is free, but reservations are recommended. The LACE Gallery presents Mark Tribe: Sweet Child Solos tonight from 7-11 pm. It’s an evening of new solo guitar performances/installation by Mark Tribe. Tonight’s live show will be followed by an installation featuring video of the performances that run through Jan. 31.

Bajo el epígrafe de 'Sol Invictus', la nueva exposición del pintor cantabro recoge trabajos realizados a partir de técnicas mixtas en las que la utilización de materiales como el carbón, la arena, emulsiones de hierro, el acrílico o el óleo, y técnicas como el collage son las protagonistas.
