GLFW is a portable framework for OpenGL application development. It handles operating system specific tasks such OpenGL window management, resolution switching, keyboard, mouse, and joystick input, timer input, creating threads, and more.

Just when you thought the Amiga world was finally getting its act together, finally making things a little less obtuse for outsiders, this happens. So, we have the AmigaOne X1000 coming up, a brand-new PowerPC computer, running the real deal - AmigaOS 4. In the meantime, Commodore USA - the one with the sketchy website - has apparently secured rights to the Amiga hardware brand, and is planning to release Amiga-branded computers running AROS. In the meantime, Hyperion, the Belgium company behind AmigaOS, who is working with A-eon on the AmigaOne X1000, claims this is a clear violation of the settlement between them and Amiga Inc., and has notified its US lawyers.

Commodore USA's CEO, Barry, Altman, has just announced that the company will be rolling back the years in some way with an entire line of new AMIGA branded "AIO" (All In One) keyboard computers, thanks to an an exclusive worldwide license that has been granted by Amiga Inc. Basically, the company aims to release machines which will support AROS a good 100%, which is an open source variant of AmigaOS 3.1 that does have its fair share of stranglehold over the kids. What you see above is an old school image of the Amiga 3000, so we await with bated breath as to what the final computer will look like. Hopefully leaks on its hardware specifications will be released in due time to whet our appetite.

Co-processor lets you C expansion slots

AMIGA LOVER Michael Carrillo gazed enthusiastically at the antique graphics running on his 2004 Amiga One and said, "Stunt Car Racing. 1987. Geoff Crammond. It's an all-time classic. Why no-one has not updated the graphics for a more modern era I don't know."

His Amiga One from Eyetech, using an 800MHz PowerPC chip, was clearly capable of far better graphics and the game was not even running natively. The old Commodore Amigas used Motorola 68K series chips, while the Amiga One and all modern Amigas use a PowerPC chip and run older software, including the classic games, only in emulation. So why do people to buy them, when they might as well use an emulator on a Windows PC which would probably be cheaper and would certainly have more software available?

Carrillo, of the North Thames Amiga User Group, counters, "Why do people ride Harley Davidson motorbikes when a Yamaha or Kawasaki is so much better? Harley Davidsons are more elegant."

He was speaking at the Vintage Computer Festival held last weekend at Bletchley Park where a new model, the Amiga One X1000, was unveiled, although not demonstrated, for the first time in public 25 years after the launch of the original Amiga A1000.

It might be overkill for running old games but it is an interesting machine, using a 1.8GHz PowerPC processor conforming to the Power ISA 2.04 specifications. A-eon Technology, which will sell the machine, would not say who makes the chip. The motherboard, designed by High Wycombe-based Varisys and actually made in the UK, uses proprietary Xorro expansion slots that conform to the PCI form factor.

Most attention is likely to focus on the 500MHz Xmos co-processor dubbed the Xena, which is desbribed as effectively a descendant of the famoua Inmos transputer chip of the late eighties. David May, founder of Bristol-based Xmos, was chief architect of the transputer .

Paul Gentle, managing director of Varisys, described the Xena, which is the square chip between the two lower dark slots in the motherboarfd pictured above, as "half way between an FPGA [Field-Programmable Gate Array] and a microcontroller." Basically it allows people with a working knowledge of C to control hardware plugged into the Zorro slot.

"Amiga users are hackers. They will like it," Gentle said.

A-Eon says the X1000 will be sent out to beta testers this autumn and the company hopes to have it on sale by Christmas at a price "north of £1,500".

Carrillo doubts if he will be able to afford one. But he says the Amiga scene has gained momentum since last October, when the Belgian-German company Hyperion Entertainment gained full rights to exploit AmigaOS 4. "A lot of stuff is getting ported over," he said. µ

Ah, the AmigaOne x1000 - now that the summer is approaching, the powerful next-generation Amiga machine is getting ever closer to being officially unveiled and launched. The hardware is being developed by A-EON Technology, who formed a strategic partnership with Hyperion Entertainment, the company behind AmigaOS 4.x, with the "express purpose of developing new hardware for AmigaOS 4 and beyond". It seems like only yesterday, but in fact it's already six months ago. July last year, we published our review of AmigaOS 4.1 running on ACube's sam440ep motherboard, and here we are, six months later, and Hyperion has released AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1. This free update brings with it quite a number of new features, and since I still have the sam440ep on my desk, I could test the new features first-hand.

People, this is an interesting thing to follow first-hand. Hyperion, the company behind AmigaOS4, has been talking about its "Most Ambitious Project" for a while now, but on December 31, they started teasing the Amiga community like crazy. They opened a site called a-eon.com, which is most likely about the MAP.

I just stumbled upon an interesting forum thread over at AmigaWorld.net. The thread details whether or not AmigaOS and MorphOS should be called "hobby operating systems", and what kind of criteria should be applied. This sounded like an interesting point of discussion for OSNews.

AROS distribution Icaros Desktop v1.2 has been released. AROS is a lightweight, portable and independent operating system amining ro recreate the original AmigaOS experience on any platform and, after many years of development, has finally reached a good degree of reliability. Icaros Desktop provides a full, already pre-configured Amiga-like desktop environment on any PC, packing it with many useful or entertaining applications, games and so on.

An effort is currently under way to port the Firefox web browser to the Amiga operating system. This effort goes by the name Project Timberworlf, and is the latest in a long line of efforts to port Firefox to alternative operating systems. This raises the question: is Firefox really suited for these small platforms?
