I am considering selling my Rotel RDV-1080 multi region DVD player. It's in excellent condition having had very little use. It's a great DVD player via the component outs and I can include a component lead in the sale. Whilst still being an excellent DVD player (and picture being considerably better via component than many of the newer HDMI models), it's the sound quality that really stands out on this unit. It must be set correctly for the appropriate number and type of speakers though. It plays DVD audio discs also if you have any - and does a great job of them. I have found it actually sounds better on CDs than a couple of my mid price CD players (and am very tempted to keep it as a spare CD player!!) Bearing in mind it cost around £1200 new and is built like a tank, I'd sell it for £150, otherwise I'm going to keep it!! No box, but it could be packaged up in a large box with lots of bubble wrap if necessary.

I've been offered the opportunity to buy a complete naim system for £849. It consists of: CD5 NAC112 NAP150 Flatcap 2 I don't give a rat's arse about CD playback these days (strictly streaming/FLAC) so the CD5 will be swiftly sold on. How much would you they're worth, I am guessing £300ish? So, if all goes to plan the amps/flat cap will set me back £600. Reckon it's worth a try? They'll be used with a set of small dynaudio contour bookshelf speakers, which are current hungry and low sensitivity - will the NAP150's modest 50wpc have enough power to drive them? It's either that, or try an XTZ/HK990 for around about the same price.... I've had a listen today through a pair of Monitor Audio floorstanders. Plenty of power and capability, but they were an easier load@90dB sensitivity. Good sounds all around, although a bit overly dull/smooth on the top end. Still a tempting deal none the less. Will be picking them up in the morning if all goes well... The only thing putting me off is their age (2001) and what a slating the NAC112 pre gets, is it really that much of a stinker?? I am thinking the flatcap should help things along in the pre department. I hear their amps need a re-capping every 10 years so by the book they're due for it - is this strictly necessary? After getting rid of my amp, swapping things about and replacing it with ADM9.1s, I am yearning for the old sound back. The 9.1s are a neat setup, and very detailed but they don't pack the punch when needed. Great for jazz, strings, piano and anything laid back but sadly lacking for anything ready to rock out... This is all remedied by the dedicated sub, but I don't have space for it any more. Any comments/advice welcome.

The Infamous Stringdusters will be recording their stage shows this next few days for a live CD expected this Fall on Sugar Hill. The first show tracked was in Charlottesville, VA on April 29, and they captured audio last night in Burlington, VT. They will also record tonight’s show in Brighton, MA plus Friday’s in [.....]

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit organization founded in 2003 with a mission “to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.” The org accomplishes this mission by setting up interview and recording locations nationwide. Individuals reserve a time at one of many storybooth or mobilebooth locations, download the DIY storytelling instruction guide, or rent a StoryKit, tell their stories, and receive a free CD with their recorded conversation. Over 30,000 interviews from more than 60,000 participants have been documented this way and preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for posterity. A select few of those 30,000 interviews also get animated. StoryCorps uploaded its first animated interpretation of a story back in May of 2010. Cartooned iterations of the storytellers appear on screen and act out the sometimes sincere, sometimes anthropomorphic, and sometimes hyperbolic action. I've got a box full of compilation audio CD's I've put together over the years using various burning programmes for the car, parties etc. I'm starting to import them all into iTunes and getting myself into a bit of a muddle because I'm building a library consisting of nothing but loads of, track1, track2 etc.etc. Is there any way I can improve on this, it would help for example if I could group together all the tracks from each individual CD, at the moment they are all just getting lumped together. Any advice, suggestions etc. gratefully recieved.

For the longest time, I've gotten by with one of the many 2-disc compilations, The Best of the Doors HDCD (2000 Elektra), but I feel the need to pick up at least three proper albums: The Doors, Strange Days and Morrison Hotel (since many of my favorite tracks from the comp are derived from these three). I just ordered the 2009 Audio Fidelity of Morrison Hotel from Amazon tonight (only 17 and change now), which was easy enough. First, I have no doubt that the 90s DCCs are the very best digital versions available and will most likely never be topped. But I'm neither a hardcore Doors fan nor are these OOP titles available at prices within my budget. I've waded through countless old Doors threads and done many keyword searches on Amazon only to be totally perplexed by which is which. So excepting the DCCs, which issues specifically would you recommend for the debut and Strange Days? (my main CD player does decode HDCDs so that might be a consideration). Any specific info such as year of release, record company, and/or identification numbers would be helpful just because these albums have been issued and re-issued on CD so many times since the 1980s.

Space-saving unit with a futuristic look

The i-deko is a slick TV stand that doubles up as a speaker system, DVD player, radio and iPod dock and we managed to track it down at the Grand Designs Live show at Excel in London for a closer look.

The product comes in two halves which fit together to create an oval-shaped device that you can sit your TV on. Along with an integrated DVD deck, the i-deko also supports CD, MP3, WMA, CD-RW and MPEG4 playback via the USB port and an SD/MMC card slot. These inputs are located on the front panel, so they're easy to get to. The central panel is also home to the display screen which shows which source you're playing from and also displays track numbers along with information from built-in the FM/AM radio. You'll also find a rudimentary array of controls, while the somewhat basic-looking remote handset is home to a more comprehensive (and slightly baffling) array of controls.

There's an iPod dock on the top of the unit, which will also support iPhones (even our slightly battered-looking 3GS). As well as charging your iDevice, the i-deko will also make sure that you don't miss any phone calls, as you'll be able to hear the ringer through the speakers. There's also a auxilliary input for hooking up non-Apple devices.

At the moment, the i-deko doesn't incorporate a Blu-ray player, but there is an HDMI port at the back if you want to hook one up. A glass shelf in the middle of the unit means that there's plenty of room to house your Blu-ray player, along with any other piece of kits such as a set-top box or games console. The maker has plans to include a built-in Blu-ray deck in a future version of the i-deko. Along with an HDMI port, the back of the unit also reveals a Scart input, while the two microphone inputs on the front of the unit mean that it can be used for karaoke.

The design of the onscreen menus is a little basic, but then its still early days for the product, so this is something that we would expect to see a few improvements on when future models are introduced.? It's reasonably easy to use, although as we mentioned earlier, you might need to spend some time with the remote to get used to all the controls.

The overall audio performance was certainly impressive, particularly in terms of low-end response - we could feel the bass through the floor when the volume was cranked up, thanks to the presence of a dual 40W sub-woofer.

Sporting a slick, rounded designed, the device is available in gloss black or gloss white, giving it a slighlty futuristic look.

I have an early Japanese pressing of a CD (catalog prefix R32P) and for the life of me I cannot get Exact Audio Copy to rip it. I've run into stubborn discs before (typically these early Japan pressings) but I can typically find an older drive that can handle it. Not this time. The disc in question has not been buffed and the play side has no obvious scratches or damage yet every track comes up full of errors in EAC and it never actually rips a track. I have tried six different optical drives from old slow ones to new ones and they all behave the same - lots of errors and no usable files. I finally put it in this one drive that usually can rip stubborn discs and set "Paranoid" mode on and got a rip but it is unlistenable IE full of distortion. :( Anyone ever run into an older Japanese pressed disc that looks minty but just won't rip. Did you ever get EAC or other software to rip it for you? Thanks :) -s1m0n-

Dear All I am after a few suggestions/ in sights to a troublesome CD3 A friend has asked me to have a look at a Naim CD3 as he is having issues with it... The first issue is a crackling audio output across both outputs. I have traced the audio coming from the DAC and as a result have changed the DAC and the issue is still present. I have changed the 6 Regs across the main PSU and as such has made it worse, if thats even possible... I have also changed out the main caps as the old ones were showing a low ESR on the analyser. However since changing out the Regs and caps in the PSU the CD transport is reading the TOC on the disc and then after 10 - 15 seconds the CD transport starts spinning up to full RPM but in the opposite direction. If anyone has any thoughts I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Luke

Audio Companion is a sound recorder allowing you to record music via the built in sound input or any sound input device connected to your computer (USB devices such as Griffin iMic). Actor whose role with Doctor Who brought her new audiences through The Sarah Jane Adventures

The actor Elisabeth Sladen, who has died aged 63 of cancer, was for many a favourite companion of BBC television's great time traveller, Doctor Who. But though her character, Sarah Jane Smith, was much missed when her three years of voyaging in the Tardis came to an end in 1976, there was still more to come.

An inquisitive, independent, feminist journalist, Sarah Jane provided a somewhat bolder sidekick than previously. The producer Barry Letts had seen hundreds of candidates for the part: many had shown the necessary vulnerability, and others bravery, but only Sladen displayed both. When Russell T Davies revived Doctor Who in 2005, he wanted to show Billie Piper's character, Rose, that she was not the only person to have travelled with the Doctor, and it was Sladen he turned to. Working with her proved so enjoyable that he conceived a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures, which has run for four series since 2007, seen initially on CBBC, with three more stories yet to be shown.

Born in Liverpool, Sladen attended drama and dancing courses at the Elliott-Clarke school from an early age, making an appearance with the Royal Ballet, and performing as an extra in the 1965 film Ferry Cross the Mersey. She became an assistant stage manager for the Liverpool Playhouse repertory company, where she met the actor Brian Miller: they married in 1968.

Repertory company work in Manchester – notably as Desdemona in Othello – and Liverpool was followed by two seasons working for Alan Ayckbourn in Scarborough. When Miller got a West End job, the couple settled in London, and in the early 1970s, after six episodes as Len Fairclough's barmaid girlfriend in Coronation Street, Sladen obtained television roles in Special Branch, Public Eye, Doomwatch, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and Z-Cars. Her professionalism and versatility in the latter led to a recommendation to Letts, for whom she provided stability when Jon Pertwee handed over the role of the Doctor to Tom Baker. It was a daunting time for the newcomer, and he greatly appreciated her kindness.

When the moment came for her to leave the programme, she did so in an impressively underplayed scene of suppressed emotion with Baker. Work continued, in the drama Send in the Girls (1978, appearing opposite Miller), in comedies - Take My Wife (1979) and In Loving Memory (1980) - and in the classic serials Gulliver In Lilliput (1982, as Lady Flimnap) and Alice in Wonderland (1986, as Dormouse), both for Letts and the BBC. She also presented 98 episodes of the children's series Stepping Stones (1978-79) for Yorkshire TV.

Her return to the Doctor Who cosmos came in 1981, when the popular robot dog K-9 was given his own pilot programme, K-9 and Company, and so needed Sarah Jane as a human lead. Despite good ratings, the show was not taken further, but Sladen was soon reunited with Pertwee for Doctor Who's 20th anniversary story, The Five Doctors, a pair of Radio 2 dramas series (1993 and 1996), and the Children in Need special, Dimensions in Time (1993). She also had roles in The Bill (1989), Men of the World (1994) and four episodes of Peak Practice (1996), observing good-humouredly that the fans who watched her as children were now working in the industry and giving her jobs.

The firm Big Finish's series of audio stories for Sarah Jane, for release on CD and online download, gave her a way of sustaining the character. Then Davies asked her to appear in the television series' successful revival. Proprietorial of Sarah Jane, Sladen was reluctant to return for what she suspected would be a jokey, fleeting cameo, and was pleasurably surprised to discover that she would be the guest lead in the episode School Reunion (2006).

Sladen once again displayed the pluckiness and vulnerability that had made her so popular, and Davies came up with The Sarah Jane Adventures. For four series she did battle with teatime-friendly aliens alongside her teenage sidekicks, including a cloned alien boy genius she adopted as her son. The series was a huge success, and latterly was graced with cameos from the later Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith, and, in his final TV appearance, Nicholas Courtney, another favourite as the unflappable Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. In the parent series, Sladen joined Tennant for the 2008 finale and his departure from the role on 1 January 2010.

Sladen was a popular convention guest and contributor to the enhanced versions of programmes that appeared on DVD. When she learned that Letts was very ill, she persauded the producers to reunite her with him for the commentary on his favourite story, Planet of Spiders, which had been Pertwee's swansong and also featured Courtney. She is survived by Brian and their daughter Sadie.

Mp3 is the compressed form of music. For a 256 kbps bit rate music mp3 CD, the data which is required to fit in for a 5 minutes song, is 8 to 12 MB. This, when compared to the corresponding feature an audio CD, is simply amazing. Audio CD is usually track based, so a minute is around 10 MB in size. The same five-minutes would eat up almost 50 MB of storage space. Essentially, one is getting a lot of music in a single CD when creating the CD with his or her favorite mp3s. Mobile phones have gone from being simple communication devices to multipurpose portable computers allowing their users to experience music, movies, and television on the go. Sadly, bluetooth headsets are more often than not mono, making them useless for multimedia use. This is where a stereo bluetooth headset comes in, but these are also considered bulky overkill for most people.

The Samsung Modus 3500 ($40-75) gives users the ability to switch between stereo and mono modes with a single ear bud, a pair of in-ear headphones for a better music listening experience, an auxiliary jack for plugging in to the line in of an audio device, and a 3.5mm headset adapter allowing you to listen with your favorite pair of headphones.

Audio quality during calls on both the earpiece and the stereo headphones was surprisingly good. While the headset offered little in terms of bass, calls were very clear coming in. Both microphone options include noise cancellation that works very well in situations where street noise would normally come between you and the person you’re talking to.

The included headset and line-in adapters attach to the bluetooth headset via the micro-usb port. The line-in adapter allows you to plug the headset in to a CD player, home stereo system, vehicle, etc. The headset adapter gives you the ability to attach your favorite stereo headphones for music listening on your terms. While neither of these attachments are unique to the Modus 3500, they aren’t common in a bluetooth headset in this price range.

The headset and in-ear headphones both include several different sized adapters to fit the user’s ear. The headset also has a clip adapter to allow you to clip it to your shirt while you listen through the in-ear headphones.

One disappointing downside to the Modus 3500 is its lack of media player controls. While the unit is built with mobile music and video in mind, it lacks this key feature.

Overall, the Modus 3500 series headset sits in the middle of the road on audio quality, battery life, and comfort. The versatility of the unit is what sets it apart from other headsets in the same price range.
