Thanks for the responses so far. Dunwich's especially, it never even occurred to me to just draw the extrema points and go from there, but it makes sense as I think about it. And the shift-clicking on curves too, I'd been strictly working with the handles. I never really played with manipulating the curves directly because mostly I've drawn in illustrator. I'm not sure if illy even allows this.

I will also check out Spiro and the remix tools. edit: so I have to run cygwin emulator to run fontforge, then figure out how to add the plugin? Don't suppose there's an easier path for a lazy windows user?

Nick - as for deleting the center point on the curve, when I open fonts I often see these points, and when you outline them in illustrator etc. you get dozens of extra unneeded points. But if I see a center point in, say, fontlab, does that mean the designer added them? Or just some quirk of how fontlab draws the glyph?

JM: I used your graphic because it struck me how perfect the curves looked. Since it was the inspiration for the thread, I decided it would be suitable to show what I meant (to show what really nice perfect curves look like, as opposed to the crap I produce). I was in no way criticizing you or anything you've made. In my ignorance I thought the little blue points were the handles on the beziers, and it struck me how consistent they were. But apparently they're not. My apologies.

Salamanca.- Un total de 622 expositores de 28 provincias y 15 comunidades autónomas, y de Francia y Portugal participarán en Agromaq 2010, la "mejor y más completa muestra agroganadera del sur de Europa", que se celebrará del 8 al 12 de septiembre en Salamanca con un presupuesto de casi 1,2 millones.

Así lo ha anunciado hoy la presidenta de la Institución Ferial de Salamanca (Ifesa), Isabel Jiménez, durante la presentación del certamen que incluye la 27 Feria Internacional Agropecuaria de Castilla y León y la 22 Exposición Internacional de Ganado Puro.

La también máxima responsable de la Diputación de Salamanca ha explicado que, a pesar de la actual situación de crisis y que afecta "de manera especial al sector agrario", Agromaq 2010 ha logrado incrementar levemente el número de expositores, ya que ha pasado de los 619 de la edición de 2009 a los 622 de la actual.

También ha crecido, en palabras de Jiménez, el presupuesto destinado a la muestra al aumentar de un millón de euros de la de 2009 a algo más de 1,1 millones en 2010, cuantía que se distribuirá entre la Agropecuaria, 706.000 euros y la Exposición de Ganado, 431.000 euros.

Ha explicado que los 622 expositores ocuparán 39.000 metros cuadrados, el 86 por ciento de la superficie total, mientras que la maquinaria agrícola cubrirá el 88 por ciento del espacio destinado a este sector, frente al 75 por ciento de la edición anterior.

Este aumento se ha debido, en palabras de Jiménez, al acuerdo al que ha llegado Ifesa con la Junta de Castilla y León para subvencionar el 50 por ciento de los gastos a los que tienen que hacer frente los expositores de maquinaria agrícola, en especial los relacionados con transporte.

Jiménez ha hecho hincapié en el apoyo que Agromaq 2010 recibirá tanto de Portugal como de la región francesa de Aquitania, dado que ambos países participarán con expositores institucionales y con presencia de ganado.

La Agropecuaria contará además con una zona de 200 metros cuadrados dedicada a la marca "Tierra de Sabor", donde estarán una veintena de expositores que representarán a 600 productos amparados bajo esa marca de garantía.

Respecto a la Exposición Internacional de Ganado Puro, la presidenta ha aseverado que en la presente edición se ha apostado por "incrementar la calidad de los animales y por mejorar su bienestar".

De este modo, la muestra ocupará 17.200 metros cuadrados en los que se distribuirán 2.301 ejemplares de 60 razas diferentes y de 8 especies, propiedad de 306 ganaderos de 23 provincias y 11 comunidades autónomas españolas, así como de la región francesa de Aquitania.

El vacuno volverá a ser "la estrella" de los concursos nacionales con un total de 1.065 ejemplares (de los que se subastarán 217) de 18 razas y de 184 ganaderos.

A ellos se unirán 510 cabezas de ovino, 186 de porcino, además de caprino, equino y aviar.

El certamen incluirá jornadas profesionales donde se abordará la rentabilidad del porcino ibérico, la valorización del vacuno de carne, las nuevas tecnologías en maquinaria agrícola, el uso de semilla certificada, y la crisis y el sector agropecuario.

El recinto ferial albergará además la IX Lonja Nacional de Ovino promovida por la Asociación Española de Lonjas y Mercados en Origen, a la que acudirán alrededor de 200 operadores, y la Asamblea de la Federación Europea de Asociaciones de la Raza Blonda de Aquitania.

El Encuentro de Escuelas de Tauromaquia que, en su tercera edición adquiere carácter internacional al participar el centro francés de Beziers y, los Premios de Fotografía "Salamanca Agrícola y Ganadera" y de Pintura al Aire Libre completan el programa organizado.

When five Belgian architects, Axel Cailteux, Celine Hautfenne, Delphine Termote, Amelie Schweisthal and Julie Neuwels, created MetamorphOse, the firm became an outlet for the young minds to rethink architecture at various scales. “We use, as architects in different firms and with different centers of interest, our combined experiences of the city and the existing or future urban assets to put forward contemporary, sustainable or ephemeral interventions,” explained the architects. For their landscape installation in Beziers, France (which was created for Technilum for the festival “Heureuse Coincidence”), the architects have not created a new building volume or designed a large scale construction, but rather, “a simple gesture” that is just enough to make an impact on the way the space is perceived.

Is there a vector drawing program that hides all the splines, NURBS, beziers, and what-have-you? I just want to doodle and color!

I'd just like to be able to draw a picture and color it in like a coloring book... but still be able to edit the lines or do away with them completely, or deform the shapes... all the things that vector programs are best at.

Flash seems to be able to do this, but I don't want to buy (or pirate) an animation/programming studio when all I want to do is doodle cartoon animals.

Tim Wallace-Murphy's Hidden Wisdom: Secrets of the Western Esoteric Tradition (The Disinformation Company Ltd., New York, 352 pages, index, bibliography, notes,  $17.95) describes "wisdom" that isn't "hidden" so much as it has been repressed by religious and secular authorities.

For instance, there's plenty of information available for those seeking alternatives to established religion, from Egyptian mythology to Jewish mysticism, the druids and the gnostics and Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism -- all of which contributed, as Wallace-Murphy so accurately writes, to the thinking of the builders of the great cathedrals; leading teachers in ecclesiastical schools; philosophers; playwrights; poets such as Shakespeare, Goethe, Blake, and W.B. Yeats; and on artists and Renaissance giants such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. It is also the root from which sprang alchemy and modern science.

All religions have suppressed what they call "heresies," but the Roman Catholic Church is undoubtedly the grand champion suppressor -- and oppressor -- due to its great wealth and power in the countries of Western Europe that were conquered by the Romans and developed into major nations after the Roman Empire adopted Christianity and began suppressing previous beliefs.

In Chapter 11, beginning on Page 137, Wallace-Murphy describes the suppression of the Cathars, a group of Christians in southwestern France, who -- along with other groups who refused to accept the supremacy of the pope -- departed from Roman Catholic theology.

The chapter's title -- "The Crusade Against Fellow Christians; and the Founding of the Holy Inquisition" -- is startling, especially to those who mistakenly believe that the Crusades were directed solely against Islam, to free Jerusalem from the Muslim conquerors.  In fact, in 1204, even before the Church  brutally moved in earnest to wipe out the Cathars, Roman Catholic participants in the fourth crusade sacked Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire and the equivalent for the Eastern Orthodox Church of Rome for the Roman Catholics. The city is now called Istanbul. It was finally conquered by the Islamic forces of the Ottoman Empire in 1453.

By the 12th Century, the Occitan culture of the Languedoc area of southern France had developed many traditions which were in sharp contrast to the anti-democratic rule of the Roman Church -- a situation that Rome couldn't tolerate, the author said. Thus began the Albigensian Crusade, not long after the events of 1204 in Byzantium. It was a crusade against fellow Christians -- the Cathars believed in a "pure" form of Christianity, without the dogmas and doctrines of the Latin church. They lived in peace among Roman Catholics in many parishes, including Albi for which the Albigensian Crusade was named.

Thus, when the brutal suppression of the Cathars began, culminating in the siege of the city of Beziers in July 1209, the leaders of the "crusade" -- which notably didn't include the Knights Templar --  asked the papal legate what to do about the Roman Catholics who were probably in the majority in the area. He replied with a phrase that has come down to modern times: "Kill them all...God will know his own when they get to him!"

(For those interested in reading more about the Cathars, I recommend a book by Rene Weis that I read a few years ago, The Yellow Cross: The Story of the Last Cathars).

In Hidden Wisdom, Wallace-Murphy eloquently describes what he calls a hidden stream of spirituality that not only influenced literature, the visual and graphic arts and science, but which provides today alternatives to organized religion that so many seek.

It's a book that will appeal to followers of Dan Brown -- especially to readers of his bestselling book The Lost Symbol as it explains much of Brown's focus on the ancient mysteries.  Hidden Wisdom will also find readers among those interested in Freemasonry;  Sufism, Islamic mysticism; and the Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism. At least today, we don't have to worry about "crusades," even though the current pope once headed the Inquisition, which survives today under the name  "Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith."

(I wouldn’t make up a name like that.)Rent a car at Hertz opposite train station. Don't forget luggage at the hotel. Drive north about 20 miles past Carcassonne to the Chateau de Villereglan. This church is built entirely of limestone on the edge of the same place "La Madeleine, surrounded by olive trees planted in pots and pink lavender.
