Will Smith is the favourite for the lead role in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The box-office supernova, whose last screen appearance was in Seven Pounds, is Tarantino's favourite to star in the spaghetti western, although it's unclear if he has even read the script that has been sent to his reps yet.

According to sources at international distribution meetings QT has been attending, Smith is the director's top choice to play Django, a freed slave who seeks revenge on a plantation owner to save his slave wife.

The Hollywood Reporter mentions a couple of hinderances - the controversial nature of the expletive-laden script, Smith's financials - which could prevent the actor from joining.

If Smith does sign on, this could be a hell of a lot more interesting than the 'safe' fare that he's been associated with for so long now.

The prospect of an A-lister in the lead role is extremely tantalising too, considering what Tarantino did with Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds.

While Christoph Waltz has long been linked to the role of the German bounty hunter who trains Django, Samuel L. Jackson is said to be in talks to play the house slave of Monsieur Calvin Candie, the picture's big bad.

We can't imagine it'll take much to get QT-collaborator Jackson to sign up for Django, even if he is pretty busy with Marvel at the moment.

Django Unchained is expected to shoot in the South in the Autumn.

When Quentin Tarantino makes a casting wishlist, he sets his sights high. "High" as in one of the biggest box office stars in the world. The writer/director is currently meeting about his upcoming spaghetti Western [1] Django Unchained and people involved in the meetings have revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the director's top choice for the lead role of Django, a freed slave who is trained by a German bounty hunter to save his wife, is none other than Will Smith. The Hollywood Reporter [2] also says that Samuel L. Jackson is circling as role as is Christoph Waltz, who was confirmed by William Morris Endeavor but he himself denied involvement. Jackson's role would be as the head slave of the bad guy, Monsieur Calvin Candie, who would face off with Django and Waltz is being eyed as the bounty hunter, the film's second lead. Smith hasn't been in a major motion picture since 2008's Seven Pounds but is currently filming next summer's [3] Men in Black III and is attached to star alongside his son, Jaden in a sci-fi film written and directed [4] by M. Night Shyamalan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, no formal offer of any kind has been made to Smith but any deal would hinge not only on his attraction to the part but availability and some kind of financial understanding. There's probably no way The Weinstein Company can afford Smith's huge going salary. Then again, working with Tarantino has made every single actor out there cooler, so it seems like dropping that number could be a smart decision for Smith. In fact, Variety has a slightly contrary report [5] that says Smith has already informally be offered the role and that he would definitely be willing to forgo his usual huge salary. They also say that both Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio have passed on the project. Can you picture Will Smith starring as a bounty hunting slave, fighting Samuel L. Jackson alongside Christoph Waltz? Me either. But it does sound pretty cool and would almost guarantee that Django Unchained would be Tarantino's biggest box office success yet. The beginning of a new month gives us the chance to introduce a new batch of fine fiction from all over the West. This month we feature an interesting variety of stories, starting with The New Sister, by acclaimed New Mexico novelist Lynn Stegner. Stegner, who won the 2007 Faulkner Award for her novel Because a Fire Was in My Head, takes us into the unsettling experience of Louisa Parker, an eight-year-old girl who has just found out that she has a step-sister, thanks to her father 'stubbing his toe' (her mother's explanation) nine years ago. As hard as Louisa tries to adjust to this disruption in her family, the intrusion of this young girl becomes a catalyst for an unfortunate act. Stegner resolves this story brilliantly with a meeting between the two as young women. The second story we'll feature this month is by David Kranes, who is an accomplished Utah playwright as well as a fine fiction writer. Kranes starts his story with the age-old line Man Walks into a Bar (also the title), and from there spins a fascinating tale of overnight success for Scott Elias, a frustrated painter who suddenly finds himself starring in a major motion picture. Kranes presents an insightful exploration of the perils and challenges of success as Scott tries to retain his friendship with his roommate while hobnobbing with Brad Pitt and Hilary Swank.

Oh, Akira. You're never going to be able to make fans happy. Die-hards are going to hate the fact that the characters are older than the original incarnations in Katsuhiro Otomo's manga and movie -- maybe up  to 30 years older if this rumor comes true. There is the whitewashing issue, and the fact that, even with two films and a big-ish budget to play with, concessions [1] will have to be made to put the story on screen. But let's throw this one out and see how everyone responds. While actors like James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brad Pitt, Robert Pattinson and Mila Kunis have been mentioned for roles [2], the current reported front-runner to play Akira's lead, the juvenile delinquent biker Kaneda, is Keanu Reeves. Whoa. THR [3] says that Keanu Reeves has had talks with the studio to play Kaneda, but there isn't yet an offer out for him to sign on. He and Warner Bros. have a good legacy relationship, thanks to the Matrix films, and I guess if director Albert Hughes and WB want to age the characters up to the point where they're essentially different characters, and cast recognizable mainstream actors, Keanu Reeves would be one of the most appropriate choices for Kaneda. Is this going to happen? Seems more likely than anything else at this point. Should it happen? Frankly, I've given up any investment in the development of this particular project and I'm just looking at it like a strange beast caged in a zoo. As I've said before I'm always ready to embrace big changes that are made when a property is adapted from page to screen, so I'm not writing this off entirely. It probably won't be Akira as we know it, but there are already a couple versions of that Akira. So maybe Albert Hughes can come up with something new to present using the same basic building blocks. I know, I know -- why call it Akira, if that's the case? I don't have an answer beyond the basics of economics and the development of big properties. The name will sell, and so that's one thing that WB will probably never give up. (And yes, Sad Keanu is pretty over at this point, but it seemed all too appropriate here.) Was it a friendly run-in? Brad Pitt and Courteney Cox were both spotted out dining at Beso in LA last night. After their respective dinners, Brad was headed off to enjoy a Chris Cornell concert at a nearby theater, while Courteney had her hands full with boxes and bags. Brad and Courteney's relationship, of course, has a long history, though the two were also spotted chatting at an event in 2009. Brad is currently holding down the fort at home with his kids as Angelina Jolie is reportedly in Cambodia shooting her Louis Vuitton ads. The couple will reunite next week in Cannes, where he is premiering Tree of Life and she is showcasing Kung Fu Panda 2 outside of the competition. The busy father's solo evening out on the town came after tending to his dad duties during the day, and Brad and his twins, Knox and Vivienne, were pictured playing at the park on an adorable outing together last week.

The premiere of Terrence Malick's new film The Tree of Life is only days away. (May 16 in Cannes; it opens for real on May 27.) This is only his fifth feature in a career that spans forty-plus years, so forgive us for being a little bit (ok, extremely) excited. All involved have been quite good at retaining some of the film's mystery, even with a trailer [1] out there, and a couple of websites [2] that have steadily offered many peeks at the story. All we really know is that it is a multi-generational drama in which Sean Penn plays the adult son of Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain, and that there are grandly cosmic themes wrapped around that relatively small tale. You can get a taste of those big themes and some of the movie's time-spanning ideas in the trailer and from the official site. But there is also a new clip from the film that shows some of the minor family dynamics, and if the trailer just wasn't enough you'll want to check it out. The space below this sentence is where an embed would typically go, but EW [3] presents the clip and never does working embeds, so you'll have to go there. What you'll see is a scene with Jessica Chastain and kids; the idea is that Brad Pitt's character (that is, dad) is leaving on a trip, and that's a good thing. Ouch. One of the children is carrying around a lizard, and lest we need to remind you, there are other lizards in the film, too. Big ones [4]. Aditionally, the Alexandre Desplat score for the film will be released on May 24, but Amazon [5] has a page up for the release, and you can stream previews of all the tracks now. I've only sampled a couple, because I'd much rather get my first real taste of the score in concert with the actual film, but for those really champing at the bit for any dashes of new Malick, maybe this will help make the wait for opening day pass by with more ease.
