Arsène Wenger will urge Fabio Capello to intervene in the debate over Jack Wilshere's participation in the forthcoming European Under-21 Championship, warning that if the midfielder takes part in the tournament he could miss important matches for Arsenal and the senior England team next season.

Wenger has repeatedly warned that Wilshere, 19, risks suffering burnout if he plays in next month's tournament in Denmark, but the Under-21s manager, Stuart Pearce, included the player in the 40-man provisional squad this week.

Wenger says that Wilshere is already feeling the strain of his first full season at senior level and taking part in the tournament will delay his recuperation, meaning he could miss the senior England friendly against Holland on 10 August and the European Championship qualifier in Bulgaria on 2 September. Capello has been reluctant to get involved in the debate, seemingly preferring to leave the decision to Pearce, but Wenger says the Italian would be well advised to veto the player's call-up for the Under-21s.

"I have spoken to Stuart Pearce and I think he will speak to Fabio Capello and I will too," said Wenger. "Indirectly it is his issue because he will lose a player at the start of the season, as I will. He continues to play at the moment but we know from our stats that he has hit the wall a little bit.

"Using him after such a long season can make Jack not available in August or maybe until the beginning of September. No matter what happens I will have to give him at least four weeks' holiday after the tournament – they finish at the end of June and he will not come back until the end of July and then he needs three to four weeks at least to prepare the season. That means he will not be able to play in August."

Wilshere is eager to play in the tournament but Wenger suggested the FA is being irresponsible in allowing the teenager to influence the decision. "It should not be Jack Wilshere's decision. Only the FA can master this decision and they have to react in a responsible way. You cannot ask JW does he want to play because do you really think he will say no? I don't think that's realistic. I would ask the FA to consider the consequences of a boy who is 19 and who has already played around 50 games and then has to play a tournament on the back of that."

Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish also challenged Pearce's assertion that he needs Andy Carroll, with England set to call up the £35m striker for this summer. The Liverpool manager argues that player development rather than trophies should be the main thrust of youth football. "Winning tournaments is all very well and good but, if you don't get any players to come through, I don't think it is successful," he said.

Germany's recent success at youth level is regularly cited as one of the reason why England should field as strong a team as possible in youth tournament. However, Wenger says that citing the likes of Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller, who were Under 21 champions with Germany before starring for the senior team in the last World Cup, is fallacious. "I hear many times a comparison with the German players but I find this completely inaccurate," he said.

"First of all the German players had not played the number of games that Wilshere has played this season when they went to the tournament. Secondly, in Germany there is a massive winter break until February that allows everybody to rest well before the World Cup. You cannot compare the two situations."

In my quest to try wines from different nations, my tasting trip takes me to Slovenia, and two wines from a company called Quercus.  Apparently, Quercus means 'oak', with at least a small percentage of all of their wines going into wooden barrels, with their philosophy of "without oak there is neither a good wine cellar not a good wine". (I'd debate that, but won't here!)  The grapes are grown just over the border from Marco Felluga's Collio vineyards in the Goriška Brda region - which is Slovenian for Collio Goriziano and with consultant Angel Muir MW on board, I had hope for these wines that cost between £9 and £10 per bottle.  I tried two of these wines, liked one and wasn't impressed by the other.

2007 Quercus Pinot Bianco
Smells like it has been a white wine left open for two days at room temperature.  A bit of bacon fat, caramel and a little apple Smirnoff!  The palate is initially ok, some alcohol coming off the front, with some lemon pith, a bit of citrus juice on the back end but with a fuller texture.  It is ok, but not a great wine and I'd be struggling to justify this at £9. 4/10

2009 Quercus Pinot Grigio
Some light, minerally elements on the nose, a bit of lemon rind and some lemon pith.  Some mineral notes coming off with a light, fresh zing of lemon and yellow grapefruit.  Some bitter elements on the palate, with some sandstone too.  A bit of alcohol coming off, but pretty well integrated.  The finish is long, zesty, with a nice freshness.  Pretty good and would put a lot of Italian Pinot Grigio at the same price point to shame.  6.5/10

There is always the problem when trying a more obscure country's wines that you may allow them flaws that you wouldn't forgive in an Italian or French wine.  I think that the Pinot Bianco needs work, but the Grigio is a good wine and well priced.  It reminds me of the Zagreus wines from Bulgaria, or the Grace Wines from Japan - they are good wines that are worth the money regardless of where they come from.

When a major book publishing group gives you a (relatively) free hand to start up a brand-new niche publishing house, how do you pick the niche? For Mattias Axelsson, it was all about narrowing things down when he and senior editor Ingemar Nilsson were chosen to start up 2244, the newest publisher within Sweden's Bonnierförlagen.

"We've seen a lot of authors from South America and Asia, but Eastern Europe hasn't gotten much focus, and they are really our neighbors here in Sweden," says Axelsson, who is the PR and editorial manager for 2244. But Eastern Europe was too broad, he says, so they ended up deciding to restrict it to the countries bordering on the Black Sea.For those of us who are geographically challenged, that would include Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine. The Black Sea is also the origin of the name of the new publisher - at its deepest point, the Black Sea is 2,244 meters deep.

Axelsson and Nilsson started full time in Sept. 2010 with 2244, first off checking out the market, making important contacts, and seeing what was out there. "When we started looking closely, we saw there was a rich array of existing works," says Nilsson. "Not only that, there was a lot of interest in writers from the area and there was a clear need for someone to publish them." While there is plenty that differentiates the literature, Nilsson says, both from Swedish as well as from one another of the six cultures represented, there is a lot that connects them as well.

So far, the two have built up a network within Sweden of people with close connections to the literature of the region - perhaps most important is the Romanian Institute, which has provided support in the form of two advisers. "We do have people within Bonnierförlagen who can read Romanian," says Axelsson. "But we didn't have a big contact network to start with." They now have regular contact with some 10-15 people, who provide advice and help such as identifying translators into Swedish - which can be difficult for languages such as Georgian.

They've already gotten the rights for their first books. "We expect to have one to two books released in September, and a total of five in 2011," says Nilsson. "In the future we hope to put out six to ten per year." So far they've focused on fiction and autobiography, but they are very open to publishing other literature as well, such as poetry or essays.

As for the books themselves, they represent a real mix of styles. "People expected 2244 to be publishing dark, philosophical literature that for some reason we associate with Eastern Europe, but it's turned out that while we're publishing some really heavy works, there's a lot of lighter stuff as well," says Axelsson. That includes a detective story, a half-autobiography, half-history rooted in punk music, and classic memoir, among other books. First out will be Turkish Elif Shafak's The Bastard of Istanbul.

Starting up a niche publisher is always a risk, but both Axelsson and Nilsson are positive about the possibilities for 2244 and the reception so far. "It's incredibly exciting to be launching now," says Axelsson.

Oil and gas giant Chevron Corp. will buy the oil and gas rights on 228,000 acres in southern Pennsylvania. The sellers are Chief Oil & Gas LLC and Tug Hill Inc. Chevron (NYSE: CVX) didn’t give a price in this deal, which it thinks will wrap up in the second quarter. Chevron has been looking for shale gas all over the world for several years, including far away places like Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine. This deal will give it a possible 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources. The Marcellus Shale dates from the Middle Devonian Period and lies under large parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and smaller bits of Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee and...

It's true, it's true. HTC is today extending some tender loving care to owners of the Desire HD and Incredible S handsets in the form of an over-the-air update delivering Android 2.3. We've seen the notice of the new firmware update on the company's European support site, though our UK-based Incredible S has yet to be pinged with a refreshing dose of Gingerbread. Shouldn't be long now, though! That just leaves the Desire Z and original Desire, both of which should be joining the party by the end of June.

Dal Stanton didn’t know how to respond. His 13-year-old daughter had taken notice of some people on the street in Sofia, Bulgaria and stopped to ask, “Daddy, what are those girls doing?”

The Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) has happily announced that trade marks from the French national offices have now been added to the TMview search tool -- the new tool which provides free access to trade mark applications and registrations from a number of leading trade mark offices, including OHIM. 


The latest expansion of TMview brings the total number of offices contributing data to 14: the other 13 are OHIM, WIPO, the UK, Czech Republic, Italy, Benelux, Portugal, Denmark, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia and Bulgaria.

    From the summer of 1876 to the spring of 1877, there was heated public debate in Russia over whether to engage in the conflict in the Balkans. Fyodor Dostoevsky was passionately in favor of military intervention, for humanitarian and patriotic reasons – Leo Tolstoy, although not yet a fully-fledged pacifist, could not see the point of Russia getting involved.

    A little background – in the summer of 1875, Orthodox Christians in Herzogovina revolted against their Ottoman overlords. In 1876, the Slav principalities of Serbia and Montenegro declared war on Turkey, and there was an uprising in Bulgaria. In Russia, there was fervent support for the Serbian cause. Russians voluntarily sent money and medical supplies to the Orthodox Slavs, and many Russian volunteers went to the Balkans to fight. Russian newspapers took up the Serb cause, as is reflected in this fictional discussion between Koznyshev and Prince Shcherbotsky from Tolstoy's novel Anna Karennina:

'All the most diverse sections of the educated public, hostile before, are merged in one.  Every division is at an end, all the public organs say the same thing over and over again, all feel the mighty torrent that has overtaken them and is carrying them in one direction.'

'Yes, all the newspapers do say the same thing,' said the prince. 'That's true.  But so it is the same thing that all the frogs croak before a storm. One can hear nothing for them.'

    Dostoevsky was in tune with the popular mood. His serialized publication A Writer’s Diary, which ran around this time, often reminds me of the U.S. “war blogs” of 2002-3. It’s fascinating how Dostoevsky’s various motivations for supporting the war merge and reinforce each other. His most laudable motive is his acute empathy with suffering, the sense of humanitarian urgency he has about putting an end to atrocities committed by the Turks. But he segues easily from reporting horrific massacres to fantasizing about a Russian conquest of Constantinople, the center of Orthodox Christianity. Dostoevsky admires Russian heroes and despises foreign diplomats, and condemns those who “rattle on about the damage that war can cause in an economic sense.” He is sublimely confident the Serbs will welcome Russian intervention, and that those who don’t are an unrepresentative class out of touch with their own people. He has no sense that atrocities are occurring on both sides.

    Dostoesvsky feels that a national malaise has been conquered in Russia, and that the extent of popular support for the Serbs is proof of the spiritual superiority of the people to the intelligentsia. He is angry with those Russians who feel sympathy for the Turks. He is completely certain of victory and of being on the side of history, and has suggestions about what to do once the Ottoman Empire is completely crushed. He is convinced of his own country's exceptionalism, that the pro-war movement “in its self-sacrificing nature and disinterestedness, in its pious religious thirst to suffer for a righteous cause, is almost without precedent among other nations.” and has a hard time crediting the good faith of anyone who sees things differently. Sometimes he talks in terms of a “crusade,” and indulges the apocalyptic dream of a final war between Christianity and Islam.

In England, the leader of the Opposition, William Gladstone, was appalled by Turkish atrocities in Bulgaria and thought England should help drive the Turks out of that country -- but the Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, in a spirit of realpolitik, maintained the official British policy of siding with Turkey against Russia. That Disraeli was a Jew provided Dostoevsky with some scope for conspiracy theorizing.

 

Meanwhile Tolstoy was finishing Anna Karennina. When Vronsky goes off to war after Anna's suicide -- equipping a squadron at his personal expense -- this is the war he’s headed for. Katkov's Russian Herald, which was serializing Tolstoy's enormously popular novel as it came out, declined to carry the eighth part, instead printing the following note --

“In the previous issue, the words 'to be continued' appeared at the end of the Anna Karennina installment. But with the death of the heroine the novel really comes to an end. The author had planned an epilogue of a few pages, in which we learn that Vronsky, distraught and grieving, left for Serbia as a volunteer in the army. The other characters are all well, but Levin, in his country retreat, remains hostile to the volunteers and the Slavophiles. Perhaps the author will add chapters to this effect in a special edition to this novel.”

   The Herald slyly implies that Levin – the character in Anna Karennina most directly based on Tolstoy – is not quite well. While killing off Anna at the end of the penultimate issue may have been bad timing suspense-wise, the real problem was probably that the Herald was campaigning for intervention in the Balkans, in the face of Czar Alexander II's continued hesitation.

    Levin in Part Eight is actually not so much “hostile” to the Slavophiles as baffled by them. In conversation with the likes of Koznyshev, Levin is not even confrontational enough to keep up the argument for very long. His attitude, basically Tolstoy's own, is of bewilderment that so many people are passionately committed to actions in a place they know little about – it's a feeling I sometimes have myself when listening to defenses of our current involvement in Libya. Levin suggests that, when people become passionately committed to a faraway cause, instead of devoting themselves to problems nearer at hand, the reason is probably to be found in their own psychological makeup.

    This seems like a perceptive diagnosis in Dostoevsky’s case. The sheer number of arguments Dostoevsky has for going to war raises the suspicion that none of them are the real reason – Slavoj Žižek has made a similar point about George W. Bush and the Iraq War. In A Writer’s Diary, Dostoevsky suggests that war is the only way to unify Russia's different classes, that Russia has a moral duty to seize this chance for an “unprecedented war for the sake of the weak and oppressed” and fulfill Russia's world-historical destiny. Where Dostoevsky insists that the right answers are best found in deep emotion, and faith that the world is ripe for transformation, Tolstoy favors a dispassionate, clearheaded solution. Of course, Tolstoy’s politics are equally a reflection of his own emotional state -- his sense of alienation with the pro-war hysteria raging around him may have deepened his sense of personal crisis and paved the way for his later pacifism.

Tolstoy brought out Part Eight of Anna Karennina in a separate edition at personal expense. When Dostoevsky read it, he was outraged. Dostoevsky's response in A Writer’s Diary is to juxtapose the terrible image of a girl forced to watch her father being flayed to death with the image of Levin remaining philosophically serene on his large estate. Pacifism requires one to maintain a certain emotional distance. Dostoevsky bypasses Tolstoy with a direct emotional appeal -- how can we just stand by and do nothing while such terrible things are being done? And Dostoevsky may have a point that Tolstoy's privileged lifestyle contributes to his sense of detachment.

    By this point in their argument, Russia had formally declared war on Turkey. The war lasted about a year, there were systematic attacks by Cossacks against Muslims and Jews, and by 1879, one-third of all the Muslims of Bosnia-Herzogovina had either emigrated or been killed. An intriguing piece of historical trivia is that this war gave birth to the word “jingoism,” coined from a British music hall song of the time --

“We don't want to fight but by Jingo if we do
We've got the ships, we've got the men, we've got the money too.
We've fought the Bear before, and while we're Britons true
The Russians shall not have Constantinople.”

    In the event, the British largely kept out of the war – although they did send a fleet to Constantinople when the Russian Army was getting near that city. A Russian-Turkish treaty was signed by which Russia won most of her demands – including Serbian independence, self-rule in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and eased restrictions for Christians under Turkish rule – but the united European powers demanded a revision of the treaty, and at the Congress of Berlin these Russian gains were reversed. The Congress of Berlin allowed Austria-Hungary to occupy Bosnia-Herzegovina and -- following a geopolitical logic that puzzled commentators even at the time -- Britain to take over Cyprus. Lasting peace did not ensue in any of these places.

    The longer-term consequences of the war are addressed by a later great Russian novelist, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, in his historical work The Russian Question. Solzhenitsyn notes that there were four eighteenth-century and four nineteenth-century Russo-Turkish wars. Solzhenitsyn writes, “Two wretched ideas relentlessly tormented and pulled all our rulers in succession: to help and to save the Transcaucasian Christians, and to help and to save the Orthodox in the Balkans. One can acknowledge the loftiness of these moral principles, but not to the extent of total disregard for the interests of the State...”

    Solzhenitsyn singles out the 1877 war for special censure -- “Such a ‘victorious’ war is worth no more than a lost one -- cheaper yet, to not start it at all. Russian military and financial strength was undermined, the public’s spirit fell; and it was then that the revolutionary era with its terrorism began to gain momentum...”

    The main long-term impact of the Russo-Turkish wars was to weaken both Empires to the point of collapse, with resulting humanitarian disasters exceeding those that Dostoevsky justly condemned. While the impulse towards humanitarian intervention is a worthy one, the results may be protracted civil war, escalating carnage, and the weakening of the intervening countries. Will future historians record that a spate of early twenty-first century wars in the Arab world were among the key factors that brought the American Century to a close?

My 4-year-old has taught me a little rhyme they sing at her daycare whenever it rains. It goes something like this:

Rain, rain go away,

Come again another day

It seems to me that if you replace “rain” with any of the vaccine-preventable diseases names, that first line captures the science-based, pro-health position quite well. We want these killer diseases to go away. It also seems to me that the second line captures the anti-vaxer’s position quite well too: they seem to want these vaccine-preventable diseases to come back. According to them these diseases are “harmless”, “rites of passage”, and they “go away on their own”. Some of them even have little parties where they intentionally try to infect their children with a vaccine-preventable disease by exposing them to other sick children, in order to build “natural immunity” which they perceive to be a better thing than the “unnatural” vaccine-induced one.  

If we allow them to succeed that second line will come true; the diseases will start coming back.

In fact, we’re getting a preview of such a comeback today. As you read this, there are pockets of measles outbreaks in developed countries such as: the U.S., France, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Italy, as well as in developing countries such as Somalia and Congo. Measles is extremely contagious. About 90% of people with no immunity to it (i.e. did not get the disease and survived it, or did not get immunity from a vaccine) get infected if exposed. It is also not as harmless as some people might try to portray. According to the CDC:

As many as 1 out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, and about 1 child in every 1,000 who get measles will develop encephalitis. (This is an inflammation of the brain that can lead to convulsions, and can leave the child deaf or mentally retarded.) For every 1,000 children who get measles, 1 or 2 will die from it. Measles also can make a pregnant woman have a miscarriage, give birth prematurely, or have a low-birth-weight baby.

In developing countries, where malnutrition and vitamin A deficiency are common, measles has been known to kill as many as one out of four people. It is the leading cause of blindness among African children. Measles kills almost 1 million children in the world each year.

On the other hand measles is highly preventable via the MMR vaccine, which is available to all in the developed world. So why are we seeing so many cases? The answer may not be straightforward, but at least in some cases the outbreaks are directly linked to unvaccinated people exporting the disease while traveling abroad. Here’s a summary, albeit incomplete, of worldwide measles activity so far in 2011.

U.S.  

Minnesota

As of April 15^th, 2011 the Minnesota Department of Health has confirmed 20 measles cases. The outbreak started when an unvaccinated child contracted the disease while traveling to Kenya. Sixteen other cases are directly related to this child (for a total of 17 related cases, confirming the incredibly high contagion rate for this disease). Another case contracted the disease while traveling to India; the 19^th while traveling to Florida, while the 20^th is of unknown origin. There have been 13 hospitalizations, and luckily no deaths. According to the Minnesota Department of Health:

• Six of the cases were too young to receive the vaccine

• Eight were of age but were not vaccinated

• One was vaccinated

• One was vaccinated prior to the recommended age

• Four have unknown vaccination status

You might be thinking: 20 cases, big deal! If you are, consider this: Minnesota has seen a total of 22 measles cases in the 14 year period from 1997-2010. That’s right, in a little over 3 months Minnesota has seen almost as many measles infections as in the previous 14 years combined. 

Utah

5 cases of measles have been confirmed in what is shaping up to be the worst measles outbreak in Utah in a decade (although still small and limited to Salt Lake County). Four schools have been affected by the outbreak, and a total of 42 students have been identified for possible exposure. The first confirmed case was an Olympus High student who tested positive after returning from a trip to Europe. At least two other confirmed cases are linked to this teen; one was hospitalized. None of the confirmed cases had received the measles vaccine. The last suspected case of measles in Utah was in 2005, and the last outbreak was in 2000 in Summit County, which totaled 3 cases. 

Elsewhere in the U.S.

A 9-month-old baby contracted the measles while traveling abroad and triggered a measles warning in a Long Island (NY) mall. The child was too young and most probably had not received the first dose of the MMR which is given at age 1.

A 24-year-old woman returning from a trip overseas sparked a mini outbreak in Boston at the French Consulate where she worked. 180 people were vaccinated in the hopes of containing the possible spread of the infection. I have been unable to verify the vaccination status of the 24-year-old woman.    

Outside of the U.S.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been battling a deadly outbreak since late 2010. So far, the disease has sickened over 21,000 and killed at least 210. One hundred and six of the dead are being reported to have been children less than 5 years of age. A massive Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) aid campaign has been underway since September 2010. Over 1.5 million children have been vaccinated so far, but it appears the epidemic hasn’t been contained yet.

 

Unfounded fears that the measles vaccine causes HIV/AIDS have led to a measles outbreak in Somalia. The WHO has reported at least 200 cases and a minimum of 11 deaths. Interestingly, a high percentage of the Minnesota measles cases are from the Somali community and unvaccinated, a community with which Andrew Wakefield has had close contact with.

An outbreak of measles in Cote d'Ivoire has sickened 47 and resulted in at least one death. The majority of the cases were in children under 5 years of age (78.7%) and the majority of cases were in unvaccinated individuals (87.2%, although to be clear this last number doesn’t mean much unless we know overall measles vaccination rates in the country). The outbreak gave rise to a massive immunization drive in February which targeted 500,000 children under 5. The confirmed numbers of measles cases in Cote d'Ivoire has been rising over the past few years: 22 cases were confirmed in 2008, 183 in 2009 and 433 in 2010.  

A massive vaccination campaign in the Philippines started in the beginning of April in response to increases in measles and German measles (rubella) cases over the past few years. The number of infections has grown from 453 in 2007 to 1,418 in 2010. More than 70 percent of these cases were among children who had not been vaccinated against measles.

Measles outbreaks are being reported in Europe, especially in Denmark, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Netherlands and Germany among others. Thirty European countries are reporting elevated levels of measles infection, with over 6,500 total cases reported. France alone has reported almost 5,000 cases so far this year (almost equaling the total from 2010). Belgium has recorded 100 in 2011 (as compared with 40 total for the whole of 2010) and most of the cases are in unvaccinated children (either too young to have received the vaccine or who skipped it). Other significant outbreaks are also taking place in Serbia, Spain (Andalusia), the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey.  The UK’s Health Protection Agency has issued a warning to travelers and is advising them to ensure their children are up to date with their MMR vaccine prior to heading to these countries for Easter. A similar warning has been issued by Health Protection Scotland to its citizens planning to travel to France.  

Australia is also reporting elevated measles cases. New South Wales has reported 29 cases so far this year. Seven of these cases were directly linked with unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travelers returning from overseas. Queensland is reporting 12 cases (compared with a total of 14 for 2010), two of which required hospitalization. Victoria's Health Department has issued a measles alert after four people were infected on a flight from Malaysia to Melbourne. The department believes more people may have been infected; over 90% of attendees have been telephoned so far, and about half of those have been asked to return this weekend for vaccination. 

Conclusion  

It is easy to become complacent and to get tired of being told how dangerous vaccine-preventable diseases can be. Yet, we’d be playing in the hands of the anti-vaccine proponents if we let ourselves get too lazy with our skepticism, and allowed them to convince us that all what I described above is no big deal. If we allow them to continue spreading their misinformation unopposed measles will come back; whooping cough will come back; polio will come back; untold death and suffering will come back. With little pockets of outbreaks the world over, a reduction in vaccination rates below herd immunity requirements is a recipe for disaster. The next outbreak is literally one airplane flight away, and we simply cannot afford to slack off now.

Support those of us who are fighting the good fight; support us and others like us in the anti-anti-vax camp. You know you don’t want “too many, too soon” to apply to children’s lives.

The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, in 2002, today announced that more than 430,000 people attended screenings, panels, talks and free community events - including the opening night world premiere of Cameron Crowe's The Union, the Tribeca Drive-In series, Street Fair and Family Festival, Tribeca/ESPN Sports Day, Tribeca Disruptive Innovation awards, and NYFest - during  the Festival's 10th edition.

 

"We are lucky to have the best audiences in the world, and I was excited to see them respond so enthusiastically and embrace all aspects of our 10th Festival," said Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. "We all are feeling energized after seeing the incredible connection between filmmakers and the community this year. I am proud of what the Festival has become in its first decade, but more than that I can't wait to see what comes next."

 

Beginning on April 20 and running through May 1, the Festival hosted over 400 screenings and panels with over 95% attendance. 93 features and 60 short films from 40 countries were enjoyed by more than 115,000 movie-goers and panel attendees during the course of the 12 day Festival, with theaters frequently at capacity.

 

This year, the Tribeca (Online) Film Festival, presented by American Express, also offered a robust array of free content. Visitors to tribecafilm.com/tribecaonline watched a selection of features and shorts in the Streaming Room; interacted with experts from the worlds of film and technology through the Future of Film blog; connected with filmmakers through the Filmmaker Feed; and had questions answered by talent, industry notables and filmmakers in the enhanced Tribeca Q&A. The site also live-streamed events including red carpets, the Festival awards ceremony, and panels and talks including the Directors Series conversation between TFF Co-Founder Robert De Niro and Brian Williams.

 

"We are enormously grateful to the filmmakers and the audiences whose support of Tribeca made our 10th Festival so special," said Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal. "Tribeca is more than just films and a series of events; it is about the spirit of community, storytelling and the subsequent conversations and initiatives it ignites.  That is the legacy of this festival."

 

TFF kicked off its 10th edition with a free open-air screening of Cameron Crowe's world premiere documentary The Union, followed by a performance from film subject Elton John as a thank you to the New York community at the North Cove at the World Financial Plaza. The event was the first of four free film screenings under the stars, and was followed by the Tribeca Drive-In series which featured Fame, When the Drum is Beating and The Muppets Take Manhattan, co-sponsored by JetBlue and Time Warner Cable and hosted by Brookfield. In total, 9,300 enjoyed free, outdoor films and interactive entertainment from music to Muppets.

 

Festival organizers and NYPD Community Affairs Officer Rick Lee estimated that a crowd of 300,000 enjoyed the signature Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and Tribeca/ESPN Sports Day on Saturday, April 30. The annual event, which featured live entertainment and family fun including performances from the casts of seven Broadway shows, visits from NY Knicks and Rangers, and even a photo-op with Bubby's giant faux cow, took place in the Tribeca neighborhood.

 

This year the festival added four additional blocks to the footprint of the Street Fair. Visitors and families mingled shoulder to shoulder for almost the entire day at the fair, which stretched down Greenwich Street from Chambers to Hubert streets, and in Washington Market Park. The day included free community events, activities, performances, and celebrations by local merchants and community groups.

 

More than 1,800 attendees joined the conversation at the Festival's 10 free panels and discussions, while events hosted by the Tribeca Film Institute drew a total of 4,200 attendees. 1,650 also participated in the inaugural NYFest, the city's first Film and Entertainment Soccer Tournament in conjunction with TFF and in partnership with Umbro.

2011 Tribeca Film Festival Facts, Figures and anecdotes:

• In all, 156 of 170 directors attended TFF, from a range of distances. The shortest: Edward Burns, a longtime resident of the Tribeca neighborhood. The longest: Kivu Ruhorahoza, of Grey Matter, whose total round trip flight from Rwanda totaled nearly 40 hours.
• The Festival hosted three Rwandan short filmmakers, who presented films they made with support from the Tribeca Film Institute. The TFF screening was not only the first time they had seen their movies on a big screen -- it was the first time they had ever been in a movie theater.
• A total of 803 delegates attended TFF - 691 from the U.S. and 112 from countries including Bulgaria, Israel, Norway and South Korea.
• At the premiere of eventual Heineken Audience Award Winner Give Up Tomorrow, the filmmakers brought 12 guests up for the Q&A after the film, including family members of subject Paco Larrañaga and activists who traveled to TFF from the Philippines, London, and Spain. The film received an extended standing ovation all the way through the credits and as the guests took the stage.
• On the day that World Narrative Competition entry Jesus Henry Christ had its world premiere, star Toni Collette gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The audience made a short video to congratulate the star and new mom.
• Powerful documentaries including The Bully Project, Renee, Give Up Tomorrow and Sing Your Song received standing ovations at premieres and screenings, while documentary subjects from Carol Channing to Harry Belafonte to Ozzy Osbourne received outpourings of love from audiences - and in Ozzy's case, an impersonator was even in the audience.
• The Trip stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon performed their dueling Michael Caine impressions at the audiences' request during their premiere.
• 20 Film Fellows graduated from the Tribeca Film Institute's youth education program after 12 days of experiencing the Festival with filmmaker badges and access, and premiering their short films during TFF.
• In a TFF full of milestones, two crew members marked their 10th Festival as volunteers with Tribeca: Elaine Harrison and Sheila Lee who, for the 10th consecutive year, took time off from her job as a nurse to volunteer at TFF. 

• Kansas-based Ethan McCord, the subject of Tribeca short documentary winner Incident In New Baghdad, attended the festival with his girlfriend Tammy and an engagement ring. He proposed in Times Square and she accepted.

Yesterday, the report 'The Legitimacy of the European Court of Human Right's: The View from the Ground' was presented in Strasbourg'. The research for the report was undertaken by Basak Çali, Anne Koch and Nicola Bruch, political scientists of University College London. The report presents an "analysis of the perception of the European Court of Human Rights in five different political and legal contexts to understand how the Court’s rulings are interpreted and implemented in the domestic setting." Five countries were studied in-depth by way of interviews with key domestic actors (politicians, judges, lawyers): the United Kingdom, Turkey, Bulgaria, Germany and Ireland. The clearly written report has includes a lot of very interesting findings and concludes, amongst other, that overall the european court has a 'legitimacy credit' rather than a 'legitimacy deficit'.

Armenia’s top grandmaster Levon Aronian remains one of only three current chess players with a FIDE rating of above the 2800 mark, confirming his highest status at Candidates’ Matches beginning in Russia later this week.

According to the latest statistics released by the sport’s international governing body on May 1, the 28-year-old Armenian chess ace is ranked third on the list of Top 100 Players with a rating of 2808 – next to current world champion Viswanathan Anand from India and Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, who, respectively, boast of ratings as high as 2817 and 2815.

In the absence of Carlsen at the World Candidates’ Tournament due in Kazan, Russia, on May 4-26, Aronian is thus considered a favorite to win the right to challenge Anand in the 2012 World Chess Championship.

Aronian’s immediate rival in Kazan is Russian grandmaster Alexander Grischuk (ranked 12th on the FIDE May 1 list), against whom the Armenian has a favorable record in 28 career games – nine victories against the Russian’s five.

The best-of-four quarterfinal match is scheduled to start on May 5 and will include tiebreak options of rapid, blitz and even Armageddon games. The winner of the Aronian-Grischuk match will progresses to the semifinal to meet the winner of the Vladimir Kramnik (Russian) v Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan) quarterfinal match. The other two quarterfinal pairs are Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) v Gata Kamsky (USA) and Boris Gelfand (Israel) v Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan). This second pool of four players will produce the second finalist for the best-of-four decisive match. The tournament’s total prize fund is 420,000 euros (more than $620,000), according to organizers (check here for other details http://russiachess.org).

Remarkably, Aronian’s seconds at the Kazan matches will be Sergei Movsesian and Gabriel Sargissian, who are, respectively, 35th and 79th on the current FIDE Top 100 Player list that also includes 71st-ranked Vladimir Akopian. (Traditionally in chess, like in old-fashioned duels or in modern-day boxing matches, seconds are aides in charge of ensuring fair play).

Aronian is approaching this major competition in his career in the capacity of the reigning World Blitz Chess Champion after winning the title in a highly competitive tournament in Moscow, Russia, last November. So far this year Aronian has won only one tournament (the 20th and final edition of Melody Amber blindfold/rapid chess in Monaco in March).

The Armenian grandmaster’s previous attempt to become a challenger to the holder of the world chess crown in 2007 ended in a failure as he finished only seventh out of eight players in the candidates’ tournament.

Please give me your best mojito recipe.

Summer is coming (in Boston, there's just a month or two left to wait!), and I'd like to master the mojito. Right now, my mojitos are, sadly, terrible.

With the risk of sounding like a J. Peterman catalog, the best mojitos I ever had were at the outdoor bar behind the National Gallery of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. Sweet, sour, minty, moderately strong. There were bits of muddled mint floating in it, which I liked. I drank between 3-5 daily.

Please help me get back to mojito nirvana. To the extent you have them, I am looking for specific recommendations for every part of the drink:

Rum--specific labels? proofs? Or Cachaça?
ice--cubed? crushed? those giant cubes sometimes used for whisky?
varieties of mint (other thread recommended yerba buena)
limes--anything other than regular old limes?
Sugar--mint-infused simple syrup? (if so, what's your recipe?) raw cane?
Proportions--obviously, please be as precise as you can.
Techniques--do you muddle the mint and lime together? Mint alone? Mint and cane?

I am not looking for recommendations for your favorite ginger-strawberry mojito. Simple and classic. Hopefully strong.
