The year is 2047. The Code Wars finally ended in stalemate – NSW is littered with empty, rusting Australian Rules stadia, and Victoria has been laid waste by the NRL’s Clone Army of Storm Forwards.

Former AFL CEO Sir Andrew Demetriou, gently nudged from his position when the Ceasefire was signed three years ago, is bored.

He is sitting by the window in his room at the Samaranch Benevolent Home For Retired Sports Administrators, a tattered Magpies blanket over his knees, a Foxtel beanie keeping his ears warm. A loop of him reading Brownlow votes is playing on the TV.

He looks out over the lawn, where Sepp Blatter is, as usual, arguing with Jacques Rogge over a large pile of rocks that they are convinced is both money and theirs. A couple of old Sports Ministers are milling about, trying to get noticed and surreptitiously dropping pebbles in Blatter's and Rogge's pockets.

Away in a corner, Malcolm Speed shouts at no one in particular, at least no one who will listen, about corruption in cricket and what the hell is this new 3-Over game, it will be yet another Death Of Test Cricket. The boys from the BCCI steal a few rocks from Blatter and hurl them at Mal, shutting him up for a while.

The cycling crew are looking remarkably spry again today, Sir Andrew thinks; must have had another Care Package delivered. Yup, there's John Coates going through the empty box and denying that it's there. Coates jealously eyes the pile of rocks, and crash tackles a Sports Minister, stealing his dressing gown and all his pebbles.

Over in the Soccer Australia/FFA pen, the electric fence is working overtime as the inmates try to climb it, get zapped, and try again. Sir Andrew laughs softly to himself as he remembers the last time a new inmate was introduced; the crazy old coot had a new idea about how to get over the fence, and was gummed to death by all the others.

Oh, and that time Craig Foster and Les Murray, there on the pretext of a family visit, stood outside the fence screaming at them until Security had to tear gas the whole lot! That was a day, that was.

The Swimming and Tennis coteries are having another feud over who's the prettiest, but, as it does every day, the cattiness merely degenerates into a lot of whining and both sides retreat to the comfort of their sponsors' marquees.

It looks cold outside, judging by the way the basketball chaps are shivering in their threadbare pyjamas, without slippers on, but no one seems to notice them.

He turns away from the window and surveys his room for the millionth time, looking at the remnants of a life once mighty, mementos of a man with power beyond belief.

One wall is covered in photographs of state Premiers and Prime Ministers beaming at the opportunity to be in his presence. His favourite is of Julia Gillard, not for the photo itself, but for the sweet memory it brings; "merging" the Bulldogs with Greater Western Sydney back in '17, and the entire, bitter, chapter that was devoted to it in her memoir "Moving Sideways".

He turns to his left and looks at the framed Press Passes that he'd had confiscated from journalists who dared suggest that Greater Western Sydney wasn't a fantastic idea. Next to that, the shrunken heads of Ricky Nixon and Eddie McGuire. His floor is carpeted with the pelts of a dozen nameless football fans who'd been tracked down by the AFL Spetznas via their anti-Administration comments on sports blogs.

A familiar itch on his chest; he opens his dressing gown and absently rubs at the scar from the Pacemaker installation back in '11. He hadn't even needed one, but Lachlan and Jamie had insisted it was a gift, and an insurance policy for them, so that the best sporting CEO in the country wouldn't be taken from them too soon by capricious fate.

Too bad about the remote control they'd had installed in it, he thought. Ah well, I was always their Boy, let them think they own me, like I kept the supporters for so long believing that they owned the game.

He wheels over to his bookshelf and feels a tiny pang of regret that he'd read something in his life other than Management Double-Speak manuals. Just a tiny pang, mind you, and he quickly pushes it aside; you don't get to where he was and do what he did if you're capable of feeling regret.

It's ten o'clock; time to feed Sam. Newman crouches in his cage, his sad eyes saying not very much except "I'm hungry". The eyes were all that was left of his face after an unfortunate lighting malfunction one night on The Footy Show, and Sir Andrew had rescued him some months later from a low-rent gig telling dick jokes in an RSL.

The nurses won't let me take you out any more, Sam, I'm sorry - you remember what happened last time don't you, oh yes you do you naughty little tennis player-chaser you. He scratches Sam gently behind the ear and drops some kibble in his bowl, then puts the cloth over the cage to stop the creature getting too excited at the sight of a Bryn Edelsten on the Brownlow coverage.

Well, he thinks, time to have another crack at the Memoirs. He switches on the PC and looks at an almost-blank screen, yesterday's efforts mocking him. This book-writing caper's meant to be easy, he thinks. Look at all those shaved apes who'd actually played sports, they seemed to churn out books easier than they churned out assault allegations.

He stares at the keyboard and wonders how many different ways there are to say "going forward", and "world's best practice" and "stakeholders", and realises that that's all he knows how to say.

All those years, he thinks, all those years. All those supporters giving me more and more money through memberships, tickets, taxes and Foxtel subscriptions. Commodifying everything and everyone and selling them to the highest bidder was the way, someone told me once, and what have I got to show for it?

A few scraps of paper, a few shrunken heads, and David bloody Gallop living next door, yelling through the wall about ratings.

The reasonably famous sci-fi film series is arguably a fading force in games. Here's what must be done to revive it.

It's quite possible that there hasn't been a truly great Star Wars game since BioWare's fantastically involving 2003 role-playing adventure, Knights of the Old Republic. Sure, Lego Star Wars was cute, clever and funny; it also revived interest in plastic building bricks and spawned a whole new genre of co-op family-friendly platformers. But its repetitive structure and lolloping camera annoyed some critics. Lego Star Wars III: Clone Wars has attracted even more scorn.

As with the movies, most veteran gamers agree that the Star Wars heyday is both long ago and far, far away – though there are different periods that they pine for. Some remember the old school arcade cabinets, specifically Atari's beautiful sit-in Star Wars game with its sparse vector graphics and memorable sound samples. Others loved the robust Super Star Wars action titles of the SNES era; while PC owners will recall the flood of space combat sims in the mid-nineties, peaking with X-wing versus TIE Fighter and its awesome multiplayer mode.

All of those titles, perhaps due to their more abstract nature and adherence to the tropes of the original trilogy, seemed to me to capture more of the essence of the movies than anything since. So what needs to be done to bring Star Wars back to the top of the gaming agenda? Obviously BioWare may turn things around again with its long-awaited massively-multiplayer epic, Old Republic. But until then, here are five suggestions for the decision makers at Skywalker Ranch...

1. Make a Han Solo game
Come on, this is obvious isn't it? The charismatic bright spark of the entire fiction has never figured significantly in a Star Wars action adventure. Instead, we've had anonymous chancers like Kyle Katarn and Galen Marek, identikit protagonists whose own parents would have trouble picking them out of a line-up. Okay, I know LucasArts are never going to get Harrison Ford to agree on a likeness, or to provide voice acting, but as long as we have the black waistcoat, Corellian Bloodstripes and rakish charm we're fine.

2. Stick to the original trilogy timeline
The pre-Episode IV timeline is a yawning gulf of endless over-complex machinations and mystifying subterfuges; this is what happens when narrative is decided on by a community of canonical accountants rather than a singular vision. From A New Hope onwards we have an evocative, empathetic story of brave individuals fighting against a cruel impersonal empire; it is – as Lucas always intended – the stuff of Joseph Campbell and Akira Kurosawa. Everything before it is trade union politics and one good battle.

3. Be Rockstar
GTA, Red Dead, LA Noire... say what you like about Rockstar, those guys know how to craft an epic narrative experience that sits within a palpable, engaging and explorable world. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed provided some beautiful-looking environments but kept them at lightsaber's length, forcing us down a corridor of repetitive action. Between missions, I want to engage with the world; most of all, I want to burst into the Moss Eisley cantina, smash walrus face in his horrible gob, then spend loads of cash on customisable power converters.

4. Be funny
Who decided that Star Wars games had to be so po-faced? Samuel Witwer, bless him, does his best to lend some boyish wit to The Force Unleashed, but it all falls flat amid the incessant (dilusions of) grandeur. Let's face it, Star Wars is ludicrous, LucasArts needs to just go with that. Maybe Seth Green and Matthew Senreich should be brought in as consultant designers.

5. Re-discover 1977
Everything we love about Star Wars comes from the excitement surrounding the original movie. Instead of slavishly adhering to the bloated encyclopaedia that the series has become, the developers of the next title need to be sat in a room with some behind the scenes footage of George in his flares and fright beard, loafing about in the Tunisian desert like some dopish acid casualty on a gap year odyssey. They need to see the kids with big hair queuing all day outside single-screen cinemas; they need to handle the original toys (not stare at them in their mint condition boxes); they need to understand the hippyish iconography of the early Ralph McQuarrie art. Before Star Wars was a franchise, it was a fantasy film about galactic adventures and space monsters and how nothing could replace a good blaster by your side, kid. Bring that back, and you're sorted.

NEWS - Oh Star Wars, what a love-hate relationship I have with you. After suffering through the prequels and having my intelligence insulted by the awful CG animated Clone Wars cartoon, I swore we were through. But then Bioware comes along with The Old Republic and awesome trailers like this, and reminds me why I loved Star Wars in the first place. Then again, I like to think of the KoToR continuity as somehow separate from the lumbering, obese remainder of Star Wars lore, as if it escaped the kitsch and endless merchandising that has squeezed every last drop of respectability and taste from Star Wars in general. Yes, I am aware I have a problem. But that doesn't keep this Sith Lord character progression trailer from being really cool.

The celebrity guest lineup for Disney's Star Wars Weekends 2011 has been announced via the Disney Parks Blog. This year's festivities will take place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 20th to June 12th, 2011.

The star studded list of guests includes: James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Dave Filoni (Supervising Director, The Clone Wars), Bruce Spence (Tion Medon), Dee Bradley Baker (Captain Rex), Ray Park (Darth Maul), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Tom Kane (Yoda).

Lanterna Verde: A série Animada.
Como Lanterna Verde da Terra, Hal Jordan está acostumado a ficar em situações perigosas, mas nunca havia encarado nada como isso! Designado para um distante local no espaço sideral, Hal deve enfrentar uma invasão da Tropa dos Lanternas Vermelhos. Logo um novo grupo de heróis se juntará a ele na missao de proteger o espaço dos Guardiões, e a própria Tropa dos Lanternas Verdes!

Produzida pelo Bruce Timm, a primeira temporada terá 26 episódios e, como a sinopse já diz, será focada em aventuras espaciais contra a Tropa Vremeia. Sinestro e Tropas de outras cores não vão aparecer de início e outros heróis mais famosos da DC não vão dar as caras tão cedo, se é que em algum momento vão.

Notaram que o uniforme do Hal é como o das hqs, luva branca e tudo, certo? Segundo o Bruce Timm, embora o lançamento do filme tenha sido o que possibilitou a existência da série, ela não terá nenhuma ligação com o longa metragem.

Tem também um teaser meia boca filmado de longe numa Comic Con ano passado, com o Hal e o Kilowog enfrentando alguns Caçadores.

Bom, tudo isso ai é um apanhado de informações antigas que tivemos preguiça de postar aqui antes, e são tão ralas que só serviram pro Hell achar o Kilowog igualzinho a esse hipopótamo dançarino de cuecão de sumô que enchia o saco pela internet anos atrás.

Pois é, só isso... Se você piscou, perdeu o vídeo todo.

E por enquanto é só p-p-pessoal! Infelizmente não liberaram quase nada da animação ainda, o desenho está programado para estrear em novembro no Cartoon Network, então qualquer hora devem soltar mais vídeos.

Embora não dê pra avaliar nada ainda por esses vídeos DE MERDA, gostei da premissa da série, mais voltada pra aventuras espaciais, e acho que tem boas chances de emplacar, principalmente entre o pessoal que curte Star Wars: Clone Wars, que também passa no Cartoon Network. Sempre dizem que o Lanterna tem tudo pra ser o Star Wars dos super heróis, pelo visto finalmente a DC resolveu investir nesse caminho.

Depois da valorização do Lanterna nos quadrinhos, e do filme que vem por ai (tomara que preste, ainda tou com o pé atrás nesse..), essa animação tem potencial pra fechar uma trinca que popularize de vez o herói.

Afinal, até hoje os Lanternas mais conhecidos na TV ainda são o John Stewart do desenho da Liga (e já vi muitos "cidadãos comuns" por ai reclamando que foi racismo terem "trocado o Lanterna, que é negro, por um branquelo no filme") e o Patolino!!



Bem melhor que o Ryan Reynolds tentando fazer o juramento, fala a verdade!!

Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat are still sitting pretty atop the UK Charts, and if you ask most gamers, they deserve it!

Not much change from last week. Operation Flashpoint: Red River still climbs the charts, Homefront is enjoying yet more time in the top ten, while Crysis 2 finally slips just out of its reach. Overall, the UK Charts have featured a lot more decent games lately, so that's nice. 

Also, you'll notice how Michael Jackson: The Experience is sandwiched directly between Pokemon Black and Pokemon White. There's an irony there that I'll let you figure our for yourselves.

The ACLU has filed suit against a school district in Tennessee over persistent promotion of Christianity and the ACLJ -- Pat Robertson's clone group -- is representing the school board in the case.

The parents of seven students who attend Beech High School, T.W. Hunter, Indian Lake Elementary and Madison Creek Elementary brought the complaint, alleging the school system has shown a pattern of endorsing religion since at least 2006.

The complaint cites several examples of the school system promoting Christianity, including the distribution of Bibles in at least two schools; a teacher who displayed a cross on a classroom wall; sectarian prayers over school loudspeakers and at school events; and holding graduation ceremonies for three high schools at Long Hollow Baptist Church.

Today's Photo Archive update features one of the latest action figures from The Clone Wars! You can never have too many clones, right? Clone Commander Wolffe is the latest example of the variety of figures that can be made now with a little creative kit-bashing!

It's May Day tomorrow, glory to the proletariat! And the middle class. And everyone else who has money to spend on mobile games. And for the legion of unemployed, some free games.

This week features a strategy-heavy load of games ranging from Brazilian multitasking action to a genuine 4X space game. Sean Carey was helpful enough to try out two iPad games as well. And there are even a couple of noteworthy Android releases, who would've guessed?

I've also taken the liberty to add small icons to the game titles this week, which should help make the layout a little bit easier to read when there are a lot of games to cover. Like this weekend for instance.

 Paleolithics (iPhone, $0.99, free lite version)

Brazilian indie Instant Games made a pretty cool multitasking game called Paleolithics. You control a husband, wife, and child who walk through levels and it's your job to make them smash, jump over, or shoot obstacles and enemies as they progress.

In each level you can gather blue resources, or defeat a boss for red resources, which you can then use to buy better weapons, gear, and items to smash harder, jump higher, or shoot further. You only have three lives that are shared by all three horizontal walkers and it can be pretty easy to die at bosses. Because of that, it can take a while to get the resources required to really progress, and you can find yourself replaying levels quite a few times because of that.

Despite some grinding elements it's still a fun game and worth a buck because there is plenty of gear to buy, but give the lite version a try if you are not sure if it's for you. Well worth checking out you want to play something different.

Vampire Rush (iPhone, $1.99; iPad, $2.99)

Vampire Rush is awesome. It's a mix of a top-down hack & slash game and tower defense. You walk around the map and kill vamipres, bats, and other monster to earn money. With money, you can build and upgrade towers to help you defend a gate. Money can also be spent on skills like healing (when you die you take an increasingly long time to get up again), fire bombs, freeze attacks, etc.

There's 7 levels to go through and unlockable survival mode versions of each, and it's not exactly easy on the Normal difficulty either. The controls work well, but sometimes you can keep trying to hit a bat without hitting it right until you position yourself better. As variations on tower defense go, this is a pretty good looking and fun game to play on the couch on a lazy day.

You could also see it as a vastly more limited version of Dungeon Defenders which is only $1 more. The games are not quite the same, but it's worth pointing out if you never played Dungeon Defenders.

Streets of Rage 3 (iPhone, $2.99)

You know what Streets of Rage 3 is, but does it translate well to the iPhone? Yes and no. It looks great in a stretched view on a Retina display, with only the oldschool graphics available and the option to play it in the original aspect ratio in a tiny box.

Because you want to play it in stretched mode, the controls that overlap a large part of the screen sadly become quite annoying. It's easy enough to control, but Streets of Rage 3 is not a game where you want your thumb over the side of a screen when you are trying to time your jump-kicks on enemies that are just off-screen. The boxed-screen mode doesn't suffer from this issue, but you don't want to play it that way.

The music also made a terrible transition if you use your iDevice's speakers instead of headphones, which is a shame. Just stick with one of the bazillion other ways to play this game on a screen with a controller.

Quis (iPhone & iPad, $0.99 -- universal app) [iPad impressions by Sean Carey]

Clawing through the morass of match-3 games on the App Store is a challenge for any new entrant to the genre. In the time it took you to read these two sentences, three more have been released. Quis, however, doesn't afraid of anything and boldly throws its multicolored hat into the ring for your perusal.

Quis does at least throw in a few twists to the Bejeweled formula to try and get your attention. Tiles are hexagonal, so matches can be made in more directions. Depending on the level, matching can be either color-based or number-based. Rather than a static screen, tiles continue to scroll down to the bottom, and the player loses lives when tiles hit the bottom. Making matches clears tiles from the screen, which scrolls incrementally faster and faster in classic Tetris fashion.

The time element does add some good tension to what is otherwise an adequate contender in an over-crowded market, but generally speaking Quis doesn't do anything to put it over the top. That being said, if you've got an unscratchable itch for more match-3 in your life, you could do a lot worse.


 Super Cosmic Word Snake (iPhone, $2.99) [iPad impressions by Sean Carey]

If the name alone doesn't sell you on this one, let me do my best to explain what this quirky app is all about. Essentially, you are the bad guy from Centipede, winding your way towards a turret that is firing at you. To keep your snake from falling apart, you must spell words as rapidly as possible to replace and grow new segments. Words over a certain length create tougher body segments for your snake. The goal is to rack up as many points as you can and hold the snake together until you can get close enough to destroy the turret.

The core gameplay is fun enough, but in single player the novelty wears off really quickly. Where this game really takes off is in 2-player mode. A second player takes control of the turret and tries to gun down the snake while the other tries to spell their way to victory. It makes for some great trash talking, and taking turns as the snake and the turret is pretty entertaining.

The look and sound of the game are really solid and fun. The game is skinned as an old tabletop coin-op cabinet, like the old sitdown Pac-Man tables you used to find in bars and arcades. The cabinet motif plays into the Centipede-like visuals, and the sound design is appropriately retro. If you're looking for a fun 2-player iPad game I recommend checking it out, but if you only intend to play it solo you might consider giving it a miss.

 Symphony of Eternity (Android, $9.80)

Stop the presses, it's an Android JRPG!

It doesn't look quite as good as Chaos Rings, but if you need a JRPG on your Android phone then perhaps this is right up your alley. Too bad it's also quite expensive.

Toki Tori (Android, $2.99, iPhone, $2.99, lite; iPad, $4.99, lite)

Chances are you already own Toki Tori on Steam through various indie sales and the Potato Sack Pack, but it has recently received its Android release. It's a great puzzle platformer with a ton of levels, so go grab the potato-less mobile version! It's also on iOS if you want it on there.

 Vincere Totus Astrum (iPhone & iPad, $1.99 -- universal app)

Last but not least, here is my favorite game of last week. Vincere Totus Astrum is a 4X game on iOS. So yes, you get to colonize planets, build fleets, research tech and all that. Each planet gets one action per turn and it seems easy to out-colonize some of your foes in order to build a massive fleet, because you have less resource worries than in say Master of Orion 2.

It is a bit of a simplified 4X game, but still the best one of its kind I've played on my iPod Touch to date. It is also the first one I played, so if there is a better one, please let me know! The only gripe I have with it is that scrolling is painfully slow for some reason. The screen doesn't respond all too well and when you have a galaxy to manage, that becomes annoying pretty fast. You can however just press the Next planet button and manage things like that.

Suffice it to say that if you like Master of Orion or Galactic Civilizations II, you'll like this. I just hope Gamesare Studios will fix the scrolling in a future update.

Caleb Hystad does a lot of great pixel art (like the recent Doom ones) and now has a free "short story game" called Herbert's Day Out. You are a pig who escapes his farm using tilt controls, and goes on a little adventure. And that's basically it.

It's an interesting concept to tell a story this way through a mobile game, and perhaps it's a hint of more to come. It's free, it won't take you more than 5 minutes to complete and you should just check it out.

Operation Wow (iPhone, iPad)

This is an Operation Wolf clone plain and simple. It is also free today though, and it has two bonus modes for shooting targets and shooting meat in a Fruit Ninja fashion. It's even called "Meat Ninja." Because it's free for both the iPhone and iPad versions, you might as well just grab both while they are free.

Get Outta My Galaxy! is a game that has gotten pretty good reviews all around, and recently received an update that adds a virtual joystiq as an alternative to the tilt control scheme. While it may look a bit like Super Mario Galaxy at face value, it plays nothing like it. It's free throughout this weekend, so why not give it a shot?

 Grim Joggers Freestyle (iPhone, free; iPad, free)

Grim Joggers has been out for a while, but a lite version named Freestyle was released yesterday. It's worth checking out, because Grim Joggers is great. But it's always good to have a demo version available.

In Grim Joggers Freestyle you control a group of 15 joggers at once. Tapping the screen lets the group jump or double jump, but because you control a group it becomes hard to save all the joggers from the numerous deathtraps that litter the levels. The further you get, the more points you'll score. Multiplier posts count the number of joggers that pass through it, which makes survival of prime importance.

Is Techno Kitten Adventure coming to iOS?

The Game Station found this image on the Techno Kitten Adventure Facebook wall which appears to indicate that it is! Is that a complete and utter ripoff of all things 2D Mario? Why yes it is. UK site Electric Pig found out that developer FeiYingInfo (really?) put Monino on the iPhone App Store this week, and it has since been pulled. I guess nobody ever bothers to control iPhone apps for fraud over at Apple's app acceptance division.

 Stem Stumper (iPhone, $1.99)

Okay, Stem Stumper is not going to blow your mind when it comes to iPhone games if you look at it and play it. But Ananse Productions created this from the ground up with support for blind people, which is pretty damn great.

You can enable a Sonar mode in the options -- as well as a no-fail mode -- that makes the grid black. I've tried to play it in this mode (even with my eyes closed) and it works very well. Sounds provide feedback to where objects and obstacles are and it's a genuinely interesting way to play the game.

The game also fully supports Apple's VoiceOver technology, which enables blind people to navigate iOS devices with a computerized voice that speaks all the words out loud, and it works well in Stem Stumper.

It's a great development that people are making games for the blind -- especially on touch screen devices that can support them. It also confronts you with how to play a game without sight, which is really damn hard if you never trained for using auditive cues to map spatial environments in your mind.

If you're interested in this new kind of experience it's worth a buy just to hear for yourself how such a game is played, and to support future development on games like this.

Zumba Fitness, which recently launched on Wii, has been working out in the top spot on the UK sales charts for a second week. With Zumba Fitness on the lips (and working those hips) of the populace, the Xbox 360 version also saw a 14 percent sales increase.

Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars and Crysis 2 dueled for second, but ultimately the multiplatform blockheads used The Force to push the billion-dollar nanosuit down into third.

Chart-Track notes that the upcoming Easter holiday spurred plenty of retailer sales, which likely contributed to strong sales increases of Call of Duty: Black Ops (+62%, #9), Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (+112%, #11) and Red Dead Redemption (+458%, #13). Head past the break for the top ten.
