This week the Times's food man Sam Sifton treks down to SoHo to try the sushi at Niko and finds a restaurant worthy of a one-star review. The food is fine (the sushi, from former Sushi Yasuda man Hiro Sawatari is "estimable," the starters are "particularly good," and some of the hot dishes are "great") and the room "feels like homage to the SoHo that once was." But the important thing here is "the scene" and Cobi Levy, who is in charge of it, seems to have moved past the "exclusive to the point of silliness" problem that plagued his last restaurant, Charles. One of my all-time favorite artists as well as publications.  This is a nice inspiration to have on the wall.

It sits nearby, lonely, reminiscing on years past when it was played daily.  Now it’s more of a monthly occurrence.  It’s nice to plug in and break away from the computer screen every now and then.

Working from the home office can get lonely sometimes.  This guy keeps me company and provokes the occasional wrestling match.  Named after one of my all-time favorite musicians and songwriters, Trey Anastasio.

Furniture piece from Ikea.  Sitting on top of it is one of the few remaining land-line phones around.  It’s nice when it stays quiet.

12. Steelcase Cobi Chair

Love it.  I tried the Aeron and Leap chairs for a year each before selling them off and settling on the Steelcase Cobi.  It’s lightweight and great on my back for long periods of working at the desk.

2.8 GHz Quad-Core. 6 GB Ram.  She’s been good to me for nearly 3 years.

14. 2x Acer 23” Displays

I like the size and clarity.  Very affordable in comparison to the Apple display and others.  Had some issues with color accuracy, but mostly nitpicking.

15. Logitech web cam

Used for Skype calling and broadcasting Freelance Jam. Has worked reliably for 3+ years. Not the best in terms of video quality.

16. Blue Yeti USB Mic

Highly recommended if you’re doing any kind of podcasting or recording. Drastically improves sound quality. I use it for Freelance Jam and the occasional recording of guitar playing.

17. Altec Lansing Speakers + Sub Woofer

They do the job.

18. Apple Magic Trackpad

I swap this in when the mouse is wearing on the wrist. Love using it “tap” mode.

19. Logitech wireless mouse, Keyboard + mouse wrist rests, Staples

High quality clicker. Wrist wrests from Staples. These help a lot for proper positioning. I’ve been dealing with wrist and back issues over the years, and these are good things to have.

20. Pen + Pad

I’m addicted to Things for Mac, Google Calendar, GMail, Basecamp, and other apps, but this is by far the most useful GTD tool in the arsenal.

UConn's Moore leads AP All-America team

Make it a perfect 4-for-4 for Maya Moore.

The Connecticut star became only the second four-time All-American when she was honored by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

She was joined on the team by Baylor's Brittney Griner, Stanford's Jeanette Pohlen, Texas A&M's Danielle Adams and Ohio State's Jantel Lavender.

"It's really special and something that I'm sure I will really appreciate more when I look back on it years from now," said Moore, who along with former Oklahoma star Courtney Paris are the only four-time recipients. "I've been blessed to have had really good teammates to play with over my career."

Police: Tampa CB Talib shot at man in Dallas

GARLAND, Texas -- Police in a Dallas suburb issued an arrest warrant for Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib, accusing him of firing a gun at his sister's boyfriend.

Garland police said Tuesday they believe Talib and his mother, Okolo Talib, shot at the man March 21. The man wasn't injured. Earlier that day, the man had been listed as a suspect in a disturbance and was charged with assault and interference with an emergency phone call from that incident.

Authorities issued arrest warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for Talib and his mother. The charge is a second degree felony punishable by five to 20 years in prison.

Pimping suspect pleads guilty in L.T. case

NEW YORK -- A man who arranged for a 16-year-old girl to meet former NFL star Lawrence Taylor for sex in a hotel room pleaded guilty Tuesday, agreeing to serve more than seven years in prison.

Rasheed Davis, 37, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Manhattan to one count of inducing the interstate travel of another for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct for financial gain. Sentencing was set for Aug. 10, when Davis faces a prison term that the government has recommended should fall between seven years and nine years.

Davis was arrested after the May 6 meeting between Taylor and the girl at a Holiday Inn in Ramapo, about 30 miles northwest of the Bronx. Taylor subsequently pleaded guilty in state court to sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute, admitting that he paid a 16-year-old runaway $300 for sex. Taylor said the girl told him she was 19. Prosecutors say the girl turned the money over to Davis.

Four selected for Soccer Hall of Fame

CHICAGO -- Cobi Jones, who played more games for the U.S. men's team than anyone else, was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Tuesday along with three-time World Cup veterans Eddie Pope and Earnie Stewart.

Pope, a defender, started all five matches as the U.S. made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup. He scored eight goals in 82 games.

Stewart, a midfielder who also had Dutch citizenship, scored the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Colombia that sent the Americans into the round of 16 at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. He played in four games in 2002, and was the U.S. captain in the 3-2 upset of Portugal.

Joining the three players are Bruce Murray, a midfielder and forward in the late 1980s and early '90s who was elected on the veteran ballot; and Bob Gansler, who coached the Americans when they returned to the World Cup in 1990 after a 40-year drought and was chosen on the Builder ballot. The Builder category is designed to honor those who made a "major, sustained and positive impact" for a minimum of 10 years.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- Oscar Cardozo scored in the first half as Paraguay held on for a 1-0 friendly win over the United States on Tuesday that left the Americans winless from three games this year.

Cobi Jones, Eddie Pope and Earnie Stewart will be the latest to be enshrined in the hall in a ceremony this summer, U.S. Soccer announced on Tuesday. Jones was named on 87 percent of all ballots to lead all of the 25 player nominees. Pope was named on 76 percent of ballots and Stewart on 71 percent to earn induction. One could say that Landon Donovan had it all: beautiful actress wife, home on the beach, prestige in a great city, international notoriety and a very good salary.

But what seems like riches and satisfaction often breeds deception.  Take Tiger Woods.  He had it all too and much more than Donovan but his recent slip-up has taken over a year to rehabilitate.

Landon Donovan is nowhere near the scale of Tiger Woods, and US Soccer still lags way behind the other major sports leagues: NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB.  Still, Landon may be showing that he is truly “Landycakes.”

In a New York Times article by Paul Oberjuerge published on March 27, 2009, Donovan receives this nickname due to the fact that he is soft and will not commit to playing in Europe.

Oberjuerge writes, “His detractors seem to focus on perceptions that Donovan avoids contact on the field and will not commit his considerable talent to European club play...Landycakes is the derisive nickname critics have hung on Donovan.

"'What those people are trying to convey is that he is soft,' said Cobi Jones, a former teammate of Donovan’s with the national team and the Los Angeles Galaxy.”  Oberjuerge goes on to write:

"Criticism of Donovan escalated after the 2006 World Cup in Germany.  Bruce Arena, the United States coach, structured his attack around the 5'8", 150-pound Donovan, who seemed swallowed up by the defenders who shadowed him and roughed him up.  The Americans were eliminated after three games, and Donovan was apportioned much of the on-field blame."

As reported on December 22, 2010 by Access Hollywood, Landon Donovan is going through a divorce.  Reports are that he and his current wife, actress Bianca Kajlich who stars in the TV series Rules of Engagement, have filed for divorce based on “irreconcilable differences.”

What makes the situation odder is that Donovan is requesting spousal support as well as his legal fees be paid by his current wife.  Donovan’s salary from 2007 to 2009 was reported to be $900,000 per season and his 2010 salary was reported to be in the neighborhood of $2,127,778, second only to David Beckham in MLS.

It seems odd that with all this money, Donovan is still requesting spousal support and his legal fees be paid; maybe his critics who label him as "Landycakes” may not be so far off.  Unless there is some deep financial issue going on, there is no reason for the man to be seeking these damages.  Landon should move on like most soon-to-be divorced men.

When the University of Arkansas hired Bobby Petrino in the wake of Houston Nutt's tumultuous departure, it's doubtful that either Hog fans or the AD themselves knew exactly what they were getting. Here's a coach who inherited a solid-if-unspectacular Louisville program from John L. Smith in the wake of the latter's departure to Michigan State, and turned the Cardinals from an upper-tier C-USA team to a BCS bowl winning Big East outfit in a matter of years. But here also was the coach who had bailed on his first shot at the big time, failing to complete a full season as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, to take the job in Fayetteville. How did he inform the players who had toiled under him for 13 games in Atlanta? With no more than a note in the locker room.

It was under such mixed auspices that Petrino inherited a program whose greatest recent success had been an upset over title-bound LSU just a year prior. But Darren McFadden and Felix Jones were both gone, leaving perpetually overmatched Casey Dick - and occasionally, younger brother Nathan - as the showrunner(s) in one of the most complex, pro-style offenses in the entire country. Predictably, Petrino's first season did not go well: the Hogs finished 5-7, 2nd in the conference in passing offense but 10th in rushing and dead last in total defense.

In 2009, that was all supposed to change. Gone were the Dicks (last time, I promise), and arriving was Ryan Mallett, a lead-footed, howitzer-armed pocket passer; a disgruntled transfer from Michigan's new experiment with the spread-option offense. Mallett was a perfect fit for the system, tossing 30 touchdowns to just 7 picks in his first year as a starter. Despite that success, the Hogs still finished with a meager 8 wins. Yet again, the lack of a consistent running game and anything resembling a defense had submarined Arkansas' hopes of competing for an SEC title: the Hogs finished 10th in the SEC in rushing offense again, and dead last in total defense. Again.

Petrino and the team had experienced some success, but 2010 needed to be a big leap forward for the entire program to instill confidence in its stability among fans and to remove the doubt clogging many outsiders' minds.

With Ryan Mallett and the majority of the best skill position players back, expectations were high for the Razorbacks in the preseason. They opened the season with three wins, two over patsies, the third a last-second thriller at Georgia, pushing the Hogs into the top-10 in the national polls. Following the emotional win in Athens, the Hogs hosted what some considered to be a season-defining tilt against the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. Things went well for Bobby Petrino's team in the early going, with Ryan Mallet hitting a wide-open Ronnie Wingo on a 43-yard scoring toss 50 seconds into the game. It wasn't pretty, but the Hogs built a 20-7 lead and held it into well in the third quarter. Then it all fell apart. Trent Richardson's touchdown grab with :44 left in the third brought the Tide within six, and a Bama field goal in the fourth made it a tenuous 20-17 Arkansas lead. Mallett didn't respond well under pressure for the first time all season, tossing his second pick of the day to Bama safety Robert Lester, which set up the go-ahead Tide touchdown. With the opportunity to snatch glory from the jaws of defeat in the game's waning moments, the junior signal caller threw his third and final pick of the day to seal the Bama win.

It's not like Mallett was the goat. He was the bulk of the team's offense, throwing 38 times for 357 yards and getting just 64 yards from his cobbled-together ground game. But the Hogs still sat at 3-1 with dates looming against Texas A+M and streaking Auburn and frustration already mounting, having squandered away their first chance to grab the SEC west's spot in the SEC championship game by the throat. The Tide took care of business against the Aggies, and headed into the road date at Auburn with a 4-1 record.

Mallett looked fine in the opening moments at Jordan-Hare Stadium, calmly directing the Arkansas offense down the field to take a 7-0 lead. But after suffering a concussion later in the half, he had to watch from the sidelines as back-up Tyler Wilson went toe-to-toe with the Tigers for three quarters. The Hogs even held a 43-37 lead with 14 minutes left in the fourth. It was then that Cam Newton and Auburn put the foot on Arkansas' neck, scoring 28 unanswered points to close the game. Arkansas' SEC West title hopes were more or less dead in the water. With nothing to play for, some teams might have gone in the tank.

But Arkansas responded rather well: after getting a couple breathers against Ole Miss and Vanderbilt that allowed the running game to find its feet, Mallett and company traveled to Columbia, South Carolina, looking to unleash newly-discovered weapon Knile Davis on the SEC's #1 rushing defense. And unleash him they did: Davis toted the rock 22 times for 110 yards and 3 touchdowns, the best game on the ground that any single non-Cam Newton player had had all season against Ellis Johnson's defense. Davis' success in part was aided by the fact that Mallett had little trouble moving the ball through the air against the SEC's worst passing defense: he finished 21 of 30 for 1 touchdown and 302 yards, his lone mistake being a meaningless pick in a 41-20 trouncing of the Gamecocks. One other black mark on the game: Greg Childs, the team's leading receiver, tore a patellar tendon and was out for the remainder of the season.

The Hogs got another week off against UTEP before traveling to Starkville to take on an improved Mississippi State team. Mallett was more or less a cyborg in decimating the Bulldog defense, completing 17 of 26 passes for 305 yards and three scores in a double-overtime 38-31 win. He finished the day with his second best yards/attempt average while Knile Davis ran wild, carrying the rock 30 times for 187 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Hogs were on the precipice of 10 wins, a mark they hadn't matched since Darren McFadden's breakout season in 2006.

They would have to get that tenth win the next week against rival LSU. The streaking Tigers entered the game at 10-1, ranked 6th in the country and three weeks removed from a seemingly season-defining win over the Alabama Crimson Tide. The two teams played an even first half until two LSU defenders collided in coverage at the end of the 2nd quarter allowing Arkansas' Cobi Hamilton to take a Mallett pass 80 yards to put the Razorbacks up 21-14 at the break:

LSU battled back with a pair of 3rd-quarter field goals to close the gap to 21-20, but couldn't muster enough offense for the comeback after the Hogs increased their lead to 31-20 with 6 minutes left in the fourth. Mallett wasn't perfect in the 31-23 win, finishing with 320 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of picks. The Tigers didn't have an answer for Knile Davis either, as the emerging star racked up 157 yards on another 30-carry day, completing what might be the ideal offensive effort for a Bobby Petrino-coached team.

So what turned Arkansas from a 4-2 BCS also-ran into a BONA FIDE BCS BOWL team?

The emergence of Knile Davis was undeniably one of two key developments. You've seen the statistics. In Arkansas' two losses, the team averaged 101 yards rushing; a number skewed by a pretty good day (138 yards) against Auburn but still a good 50 yards below the national average. They were held under 100 yards rushing three times in their first four games. With Davis in the backfield, the Hogs gashed South Carolina, moved the ball at will against a solid LSU defense, and sliced through almost everyone else on their post-Auburn schedule with ease. 

But that's only half the story; the other half was the emergence of the rushing defense: while Knile Davis was tearing up the Gamecock defense, the Arkansas D made life a living hell for prodigal South Carolina freshman Marcus Lattimore, who finished the day with 11 carries for 30 yards. Mississippi's spread-option attack needed 42 carries to get to 185 yards, and Mississippi State's needed 70 (!) to get to 262, a big number, but still under 4 yards a pop. LSU was simply shut down on the ground.

So yeah, the rushing defense isn't putting up '09 Bama or '08 USC numbers. Moving beyond raw total defense numbers, Football Outsiders ranks them as the 26th overall defense in the country, and the fifth toughest the Buckeyes have played after Miami, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. It's better than it has been in years prior, and was good enough to get Arkansas over the hump in the SEC, giving them their best season since the glory days of McFadden and Jones. Most importantly, it has crushed teams like LSU and South Carolina which came into the game thinking they could simply run the ball to take pressure off of their inconsistent passers. Still, it can be had, as Alabama and Auburn showed, and that's encouraging. Even so, Pryor is going to have to make plays with his arm to give the Buckeye offense a chance of keeping pace with the Hogs. In the end, Razorback defense's continued improvement, along with the arrival of Knile Davis and the continued excellent play of Mallett make Arkansas a dangerous bowl opponent, and a thoroughly worthy one that, which will provide a great litmus test for this edition of the Buckeyes.

If you didn't see the INT above live during the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game because it was not broadcast in your part of the country, you're welcome. When will QBs learn to throw the ball well out of bounds on these plays? This kind of thing has happened before.

BCS Shakeup (Boise State and LSU out of the Top 5, Stanford and Wisconsin in): LSU lost to Arkansas. In some sense, the game resembled the NCAA Football 11 prediction of the Battle for the Golden Boot--that sense being that LSU's dumb mistakes would cost them the game. Cobi Hamilton was the beneficiary of just atrocious secondary play from the Tigers. On a third and 9 in the second quarter, Hamilton ran straight up the sideline, untouched of course because LSU was not in man coverage pressing the three WRs (AS THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN) on one side of the field. Ryan Mallett is a really solid QB with a cannon for an arm. A moment of indecision from Patrick Peterson was all it took to made a huge play happen. Hamilton was wide open, Mallett fired the pass to him and LSU's safety Karnell Hatcher was in no position to make the play (because he already had to deal with another WR who was running at him). EIGHTY-FIVE yards later, Hamilton is in the endzone still untouched. Here's the video of the third and Chavis.

Later, after LSU tied the game at 14, they fumbled the ball away and were seemingly saved by Mallett throwing a pick in the endzone. The chances of LSU's offense of getting into field goal range with 45 seconds left were not completely out of the question. However, given the massive struggles passing the ball this season and being on the road, you just run the clock out having taken the momentum back on an INT. Or, you can do what LSU did: Run the ball twice. Call timeout. Throw two incomplete passes. Punt the ball from your own 44 through the back of the other endzone with six seconds left. Then, you fail to play prevent defense and let this happen.

Beyond those two plays, LSU lost because Miles wasn't himself. On the opening drive of the second half, LSU called plays to get a FG, perhaps to get the confidence back for their kicker who had missed an earlier FG. The kick was good. LSU kicked on 4th and 4 at the Arkansas 29. After the way the first half ended, this was the time to get unorthodox and steal the momentum back. What did Petrino do on 4th and 3  from the LSU 39 with a one point lead in the fourth quarter? This. Let's call that 4th and Chavis. Miles also decided to take three points (by calling plays that made a TD highly unlikely) on a twenty yard FG in the third quarter after getting the ball on a fumble at the Arkansas 9. After a meltdown like we saw on Saturday, it was only fitting that at the time of writing this article, the LSU Sports website domain had not been renewed.

The second quarter of LSU-Arkansas 2010 has displayed considerably more action than the first, with traded touchdowns and a close game heading into halftime.

We return to Little Rock with Ryan Mallett in mid-drive. They punt to Patrick Peterson, who by the grace of some Arkansas demigod doesn't return it for a touchdown. Stevan Ridley and Jordan Jefferson start ripping off big plays less than two minutes later, and after a 32-yard catch by Terrence Toliver, a 24-yard catch by Kadron Boone, and a five-yard scoring run by Ridley, the Tigers are on the board in a tie game.

That vaunted LSU defense seems to have settled into a rhythm against the Hogs, and Arkansas goes three-and-out. Two ten-yard penalties on back-to-back plays rapidly reduce the Tigers to 3rd-and-22, and Russell Shepard makes a valiant catch on a 20-yard catch from Jefferson, but Les Miles' boys send out the punting unit.

Arkansas has had enough, it seems, and prepares to go big. On 3rd-and-9, Mallett hits Cobi Hamilton with an 85-yard touchdown bomb, and the Hogs are back on top. LSU answers immediately, with a four-minute drive and another Stevan Ridley punch-in.

The remaining highlights of the quarter consist of back-to-back turnovers, one for each team, and the Tigers and Razorbacks hit the locker room -- I'm sorry, there's an official telling us to put three more second back on a game clock reading 00:03, and with the six remaining ticks, Mallett hits Hamilton right down the middle for an 80-yard breakaway touchdown. Razorbacks lead at the half, 21-14.

LSU had a chance, had a miracle happened.

The Tigers got a field goal with just under two minutes to cut Arkansas' lead to 31-23, which would have given LSU a chance to tie the game and send it to overtime after a successful onside kick.

But that wasn't to be: LSU's kick was snared by Cobi Hamilton, who has also had three catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns on the day.

It wasn't over in Fayetteville, because a strong series from the LSU defense and a clock error have preserved just enough time for a miracle finish. But a Jordan Jefferson fumble — on a possession that began within the LSU 10 after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Patrick Peterson — did end it, and finished off LSU's BCS hopes as well.

For the Tigers, it's a sad, quiet end to a season that seemed destined at times, but for Arkansas, it's a great moment, as Bobby Petrino's program signals its return to national prominence and claims what should be a Sugar Bowl berth.

Arkansas has scored first against South Carolina, finding the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Arkansas' shaky defense held the Gamecocks to a three-and-out in their opening possession, as Stephen Garcia misfired on all three of his pass attempts.

The Razorbacks and Ryan Mallett were fare more efficient in their first turn. Mallet completed three of his four attempts for 50 yards, hitting Cobi Hamilton for a 4-yard score to cap a 59-yard drive.

It was Mallett's 19th touchdown of the year, and he had no problem shredding South Carolina's SEC-worst pass defense.

The Gamecocks are looking to all but wrap up the SEC East with a win tonight. They could have clinched with a win if Florida had lost to Vanderbilt, but a win would inch them closer all the same.

Then again, we all know the troubles Steve Spurrier's recent teams have had as soon as they got to 6-2.

The first Arkansas drive of the game was every South Carolina fan’s worst nightmare entering play: Receivers were wide open, and Ryan Mallett found them with relative ease. Mallett was 3-of-4 for 50 yards, including a touchdown pass to Cobi Hamilton.

South Carolina has been notably less successful on offense, with a three-and-out to start the game without getting the ball to star running back Marcus Lattimore. His first run — on South Carolina’s second drive — lost about a yard.

There is no question that 21-year old Juninho has made his mark as a midfielder for the Los Angeles Galaxy. Of the three imports from São Paulo that came in to bolster the hopes of Bruce Arena's side, it's Juninho that has made the strongest impact.

Now this columnist does not claim to be an insider to the confidential wheelings and dealings of the board rooms of São Paulo Futebol Clube or the Los Angeles Galaxy, but it has to be a straightforward choice. An easy one. A choice that one would have to be blind, stupid, or possibly dead to not comprehend.

Sign Juninho to a long-term contract. Let me say it again: the Galaxy need to buy the rights to Juninho from São Paulo, with the money they will get from the retirements of Clint Mathis, Eddie Lewis and Chris Klein, and sign him to a long-term contract.

We will leave the negotiating to those responsibile parties, but seriously: the Galaxy, as an organization, needs Juninho more than São Paulo does.

Juninho has already paced the G's to a Supporters Shield title, and it could get even better. It would be a shame if the powers that be on Victoria Street drop the ball unceremoniously.

He needs the experience playing in Major League Soccer to improve his skills as a midfielder and make him a star alongside Landon Donovan, David Beckham and Edson Buddle (and we'll also throw in the Big Cat from Montego Bay, Donovan Ricketts, for good measure).

"For me, it was my first experience outside the country, and I’m very happy and pleased with the opportunity," Juninho said earlier in the week. "I hope I can show everything I know every day and every game, which is very important for me, as it’s a great team.

"I hope to make you all happy here showing my football, not only for the Galaxy, but to the whole world."

Well done.

"He understands what this league’s about," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "He has a little better feel for his job. He’s been primarily a defensive midfielder in his days at São Paulo. We give him a little more leeway and direction to go forward and play-make a little bit. It takes a little time, but I think he’s done very well."

As Juninho said, "When they contracted me and brought me here, I felt that I would be able to contribute in some form and that, in some way, I would be able to fit into the team on the pitch."

He did, with two goals this season, including a game-winner that put the Galaxy at the top of the regular season table outright against FC Dallas on Oct. 24.

At the beginning of his stint with the Galaxy, there were language and communication barriers to overcome. The importance of Leonardo and Alex Cazumba as part of the package from the Tricolor Paulista was key to a smooth transition.

“All three coming was very important, I think, as I didn’t speak any English, and my experience with the other players here would be difficult,” Juninho said. “I wanted to give my opinion, and many times I couldn’t, so the others coming was quite important so that I wouldn’t feel so alone, and today I speak a little English and Spanish, which helps a lot, and is more important for my getting along.”

Since that rocky start, Juninho has been able to pick up enough English and Spanish to get things going.

Of course, Juninho understands that his playing future is not up to him to decide.

“This is a decision we’ll have to make after the season, and it’s not for me to decide," he said. "For starters, it’s up to the Galaxy, if they are still interested, and São Paulo, if they want to keep me here. So I want to have a good campaign in MLS and, hopefully, after the season, this will be resolved in the best manner possible.”

And hopefully (with apologies to Dan Loney of BigSoccer), fans at the Home Depot Center will get to see more of Juninho Carsonista in action.

A formidable home playoff record


The Galaxy head into the second leg of the 2010 MLS Western Conference Semifinals against Sigi Schmid's Seattle Sounders with a 19-2-1 home playoff record.

“It shows that we are a tough team to beat down here. Teams have their work cut out for them. But at the same time, those kind of stats only go so far, “said defender Todd Dunivant, an intergral part of the Galaxy’s 2005 MLS Cup championship side. “We can’t focus too much on the stats, but it does show that we are a tough team to beat in this building.”

“I think it shows a level of concentration and pride in this club in having a good home," said former Galaxy great and current assistant manager Cobi Jones. "It is a testament to the players, the staff that has been here over the years, and the fans. They have made it a very difficult place for other teams to come and play."

Jones is L.A.'s all-time leader in regular season and postseason games played.

“I think is very important that with this upcoming game that we continue with that tradition," Jones added. "It would be nice to continue with that tradition and move forward and make it a place where teams fear coming into. That shows you why the Galaxy has been such a good team over the years because it means something to this club.

"If you want to be a championship team, you need to win at home."

Team captain Landon Donovan agrees with that argument.

“The reason why we put so much into the regular season is to have the opportunity to play here at home when it matters," Donovan said. "We put a lot into our last game of the regular season against Dallas to ensure that we had the home field advantage in the playoffs and now we have to make it stand up.

“This team has always played well at home. I take a lot of pride in playing well at home in the playoffs and the same will go for Sunday.”

Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT and will be televised by ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

My son Cobi created this humorous vlog after watching Jeff’s vlog on Deafhood Church and following the turmoil that occurred at aslrocks.net. He created the entire game from scratches and did an excellent job, in my opinion. And then he asked me to join him in doing a play for the video. Was fun while it lasted. El dibujante Javier Mariscal llena a partir de este miércoles La Pedrera de Barcelona con una gran exposición que repasa los 22 años de actividad de su estudio con multitud de objetos, carteles, esculturas, y piezas audiovisuales llenas de color.

"Nosotros no estamos haciendo arte, estamos haciendo diseño", ha dicho el dibujante valenciano en la presentación de la muestra, dejando clara su filosofía, que va desde lo más pequeño --acaba de regalar unos dibujos a los pescadores de la Barceloneta para que promocionen sus gambas--, hasta lo más grande, el Gran Hotel Domine de Bilbao, que funciona "de puta madre".

La muestra arranca con 1.500 dibujos que cuelgan desde el techo y reciben al visitante como en un "túnel lavacoches". De ahí se pasa al espacio que explica la construcción del "lenguaje Mariscal", con un recorrido por todas las tipografías que ha creado y los primeros éxitos de los años 70.

A lo largo de estas décadas de trabajo Mariscal ha diseñado cientos de portadas para publicaciones como 'The New Yorker' y 'El País Semanal', y buena parte de ellas se exhiben como ejemplo de "arte efímero", junto con bolsas de la compra, carteles y diseños para multitud de marcas.

El carácter polifacético del artista queda patente en toda la exposición, pues también se exhibe mobiliario y objetos de decoración; como el sillón Alessandra, el carrito Hilton y el jarrón Olé; una tira de cómics ecologistas (el Señor Mundo) y un gran retrato del Rey Juan Carlos I, descalzo en la playa y rodeado de pajaritos.

Uno de los protagonistas más claros de la muestra es Cobi, la mascota de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona '92, la creación más conocida de Mariscal, que lejos de mostrarse nostálgico ha recordado que al nacer, ya sabía que día iba a morir. "Y eso ya es mucho", ha recalcado.

Su presencia no pasa por alto: una gran urna de cristal contiene los cientos de productos de 'merchandising' que se crearon con su imagen. Los éxitos del pasado se dan la mano con los que están por venir, como la película 'Chico&Rita;' uno de los filmes de animación más esperados de los últimos años.

Se trata de la película que Fernando Trueba y Mariscal han creado juntos, una historia llena de música ambientada en La Habana que llegará al cine en los próximos meses. Barcelona.- La trayectoria de 40 años del diseñador Javier Mariscal y su estudio, vinculado en el imaginario popular al simpático Cobi, la mascota de los JJOO de Barcelona, se puede seguir en La Pedrera en una exposición que presenta su creación como la de "un artista total, polifacético y multidisciplinar".

La primera exposición antológica dedicada a Mariscal, que podrá verse desde el próximo 29 y hasta el 30 de enero, sumerge al espectador en el mundo multidisciplinar de la "factoría" Mariscal para descubrir su proceso creativo.

El propio Mariscal ha creado para esta ocasión una obra de cinco metros de altura llamada "Alegría", que refleja la forma positiva que tiene este artista de mirar la vida y que se colocará en el paseo de Gràcia, delante de La Pedrera, mientras dure la exposición.

Organizada en seis espacios temáticos, la antológica muestra el lenguaje de Mariscal, su metodología, el carácter de su trabajo, sus intenciones y actitudes, así como las múltiples disciplinas en las que ha trabajado.

El itinerario expositivo se inicia con un conjunto colgante de más de 1.500 dibujos y apuntes del natural que representan sentimientos, expresan emociones, desarrollan ideas y conceptos y transmiten su visión del mundo y de lo que le rodea, y que dan una idea de la importancia del dibujo en su proceso creativo.

Junto a esta instalación de páginas blancas, se esconde otra instalación negra, en la que un Chrysler de los años 50, la década que consagró el objeto de consumo, se estrella en un "Crash!", como una caricatura de la paradoja del consumo.

Los colores y su ausencia (el blanco y el negro) recorren transversalmente toda la exposición, asociados siempre a la transmisión de emociones.

Las tipografías, también importantes en su obra, quedan resumidas conceptualmente por un "muro" de letras gigantes que reivindica "la belleza de las letras" y que al ser transitable rinde homenaje al "diálogo".

A lo largo de la exposición, el público puede ver algunos de los "hitos" de la creación 'mariscaliana' y de su estudio en las últimas cuatro décadas, que evidencian, según ha explicado el propio diseñador, su "fascinación por el diseño de los años 50, el litoral Mediterráneo y los objetos domésticos".

El propio Mariscal resume algunos de esos "hitos": "la imagen de los socialdemócratas suecos, el logotipo de Bancaixa, Cobi, la mascota de la Exposición Universal de Hannover de 2000, el museo de la ciencia de Ohio, que hicimos junto a Arato Isozaki, el parque de atracciones de Nagasaki o el gran 'resort' turístico que hicimos en el sur de Italia".

Las intenciones y actitudes que influyen en todo su trabajo se hacen más explícitas en un espacio donde se juega descaradamente con irónicas instalaciones como la "Urna Souvenir de Cobi", repleta de objetos que se crearon al albor de la mascota de los JJOO de Barcelona 92, o en el "Retablo de S.M. Juan Carlos I", un retrato del Rey entre la caricatura y el retrato naïf.

La muestra emana además una crítica irónica a las "jerarquías mercantilistas del arte", con guiños como la obra única, la reproducción, el original reproducido, y se pone en duda el crecimiento sin límite del consumo a través del popular personaje de "El Señor Mundo".

Lo más íntimo del trabajo de Mariscal ocurre en un lugar soñado o reinventado, que le ha permitido expresar poéticamente el modo en que ve el mundo, un mundo habitado por Los Garriris, personajes sin oficio, dinero ni productos que consumir, que recorren un metafórico litoral, frontera entre la poesía visual y el cómic, entre la instalación artística y el teatrillo de cartón piedra.

El cine, la ficción es su último experimento: una película de animación para público adulto, titulada "Chico & Rita", que ha sido creada y producida conjuntamente por el Estudio Mariscal y Fernando Trueba, un proyecto con el que Mariscal reivindica sus orígenes, su "oficio de dibujante".

A través de una instalación interactiva, se muestra al espectador la experiencia creativa que ha supuesto "Chico & Rita", los orígenes del proyecto, la sinopsis del guión, el proceso artístico y la tecnología empleada.

Con "Mariscal en la Pedrera", la Obra Social de CatalunyaCaixa inicia una nueva etapa en el capítulo expositivo después de la fusión de Caixa Catalunya, Tarragona y Manresa.

En esta nueva etapa, se pondrá el acento en autores y artistas que sean "innovadores, creativos y polifacéticos, en sintonía con los valores que la recién creada Obra Social quiere transmitir".

A minimum of nine points (and some favorable results) continue to separate Chivas USA from this year’s MLS playoffs, and with 7 games left in the season, it is still mathematically possible for the red-and-white to qualify.

Oddly enough, Chivas USA finds itself in a situation similar to that which their in stadium rivals -- the LA Galaxy -- found themselves in back in 2005, fighting tooth and nail in the final games of the season to get into the playoffs.

Back then, Galaxy legend Cobi Jones and Landon Donovan led the squad through a memorable playoff campaign after barely qualifying, and then capped it off with an MLS Cup victory in Frisco, Texas against the New England Revolution. Will it happen again for another L.A. team? With a little luck, Chivas USA might get a crack at doing so.

“Nothing is impossible,” says Chivas USA midfielder Osael Romero about the team’s chances at mirroring the feat. Following a 2 - 0 victory over New England a week ago Friday, and another against big brother CD Guadalajara on Tuesday night, the players seem to be feeling confident and relaxed.

“We can’t let our guard down” adds Romero as he further comments on the matter, pointing out they won’t give up and are working hard.

It is hard to argue against his point when players like Dario Delgado, Marcelo Saragosa, Ben Zemanski and Paulo Nagamura continue to work on refining their skills and fitness well after practice has come to a close. While relaxed, there is a noticeable level of intensity they and others demonstrate on the pitch.

Tomorrow, they will need to bring that intensity from the practice field and onto the big stage to face Kansas City Wizards who, like the red-and-white, are also on the bubble. This one should be a battle.

Now, with all due respect to Burger King, I did not mean their sandwich (which is actually called the BucK Double, and yes, that's how the phrase is actually spelled). B stands for Buddle, but K stands for Kirovski.

Edson Buddle scored his 14th goal of the season while Kirovski added a goal and an assist in LA's 3-1 rout of Columbus. The goal was Kirovski's fifth of the season.

Now there's a tasty combination for you.

“Obviously, Edson is not a surprise there and Jovan has played there a fair amount,” Arena said after Monday’s training session at the Home Depot Center. “We just felt in training Jovan was going to be the best choice for the week.

“Wherever we play Jovan he brings us experience, a brain on the field. My analysis of our team is we needed that. We’ve needed smarter players on the field, and Jovan brings us that. We know that he’s probably not going to win a lot of foot races, but to have another smart player on the field who understands what needs to be done each and every game is critical.”

Kirovski had noteworthy praise when asked about Buddle's work ethic.

“He’s good on the ball, he’s clever, and both of us have pretty good size,” Kirovski said after the training session. “It’s great when we get the ball wide and we both get in the box.

“Bruce knows what he’s going to get out of us. It worked out well.”

Meanwhile, Buddle cited experience as a factor for Jovan's impression on the team's success.

“He’s confident on the ball,” Buddle said after training. “When I have the ball, I know I can play him the ball in any position, whether he’s open or in tight space, I know he can handle himself well, and that gives a player like myself a lot of confidence.

“He’s played a lot of games and he’s not intimidated by anyone. One of our strengths as a team is we feel confident with whoever is on the field. We’ll see, but things can change.”

Lucky 13 for Dema

Dema Kovalenko became the 13th Galaxy player to score this season in LA's 3-1 victory while becoming the second to score under the No. 21 jersey. Thus, only six field players and the three goalkeepers have not scored a goal for LA in an MLS, CONCACAF Champions League, or Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game, or one of the club’s four international friendlies (better step it up, the rest of you...Birchall?).

The goal was also Kovalenko's first in the regular season since May 31, 2008, when he was playing under the red, blue and gold of Real Salt Lake.


On the verge of more superlative for the American Pele

With his league-leading 14th of the season, Edson Buddle is now one goal away from tying his personal best of 15 goals set in 2008 and one away from becoming the first in Major League Soccer history to score 40 goals with two teams.

Buddle scored 42 goals in 106 matches for the Crew from 2001-2005. His 87 goals are eighth-most in league history, behind Roy Lassiter, who is seventh with 88.


On the next exciting episode of "The Provider..."

Landon Donovan extended his lead over the Philadelphia Union's Sebastian Le Toux with 14 assists on the campaign, breaking his old career high of 13 assists in 2007. Furthermore, Donovan ties Martin Machon for second-most in a single season. Machon tallied his 14 assists during the 1999 MLS season.

The club record for most assists in a season is currently held by Mauricio Cienfuegos, who set the record in 1999. Donovan is currently third on the all-time club assists category with 60, behind assistant coach Cobi Jones (91 assists) and Cienfuegos (80 assists).


Welcome back, Marshall

After five months on loan to the Austin Aztex of the USSF Division 2 Pro League, defender Yohance Marshall returns to the club. Marshall appeared in 24 matches for Austin, tallying three goals en route to the second-best record in the league and their first-ever postseason berth.

Marshall was signed by the Galaxy as an undrafted free agent in March 2009 after playing four years at the University of South Florida. He has not appeared in a regular season game for the club, but he did appear in a U.S. Open Cup Play-In Game against the Colorado Rapids in April 2009.


Two yet to gain some time

Marshall is one of two players that has yet to see playing time as a member of the Galaxy. The other player is backup goalkeeper Brian Perk, who was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Union in early August.

Don't be surprised if you get to see those two in the regular season finale against FC Dallas. That is, if the race for the Supporter's Shield is no longer in the air and the G's end up on top of it all...


Here's to you, Jaime Moreno

The all-time leading goal scorer in MLS history, the Los Angeles Galaxy will honor D.C. United's very own Jaime Moreno in a pregame presentation before kickoff on Saturday at Victoria Street.

The 1997 MLS Golden Boot award winner, Moreno was also named to the MLS Best XI four times, seven MLS All-Star teams and was named to the MLS All-Time Best XI in 2005. Moreno was also a member of all of D.C.'s sides that won 12 major domestic and international championships.

After a slow start, Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett found the form that will make him a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate in 2010 by leading his Razorbacks to a comfortable 44-3 victory over Tennessee Tech.

For 15 minutes, Arkansas fans had to fear the worst, as the hosts trailed their Football Championship Subdivision foe, 3-0. One SEC West team already lost to a lower-division opponent on Saturday, as Ole Miss fell in double overtime to Jacksonville State.

Mallett’s first two possessions of the 2010 season did not go as planned. On the first Arkansas possession, the Razorbacks had a turnover on downs before Mallett threw an interception on the next possession.

Following the interception, Mallett was sensational. The junior completed 21 of 24 passes for 301 yards and three scores for the Razorbacks. In quick fashion, the panic subsided within 1:14 of the second quarter when Arkansas claimed a 9-3 lead, an advantage the Razorbacks would never relinquish.

Dennis Johnson, who rushed for 60 yards on just three carries, kick-started the scoring explosion with a seven-yard touchdown run with 14:19 remaining in the first half. Ramon Broadway ensured the defense would help its own cause by tackling Jocques Crawford in the end zone for a safety.

Broderick Green pounded a one-yard effort in for a score with 9:14 left in the first half before Mallett found Joe Adams on an 85-yard scoring strike later to give Arkansas a 23-3 halftime lead.

Ronnie Wingo Jr. opened the second half with a 10-yard touchdown run. Mallett struck twice more in the third quarter, finding Cobi Hamilton and Joe Adams, respectively, to round out an impressive showing.

Arkansas fans should be hopeful, on paper, that Mallett and the offense can have the same success this week in a potentially tougher than expected game in Little Rock against Louisiana-Monroe.

The Razorbacks were expected to roll the Warhawks in 2008 when Arkansas squeaked out a 28-27 win after trailing 27-14 in the fourth quarter. Last season started off in similar fashion with a woodshed victory over Missouri State before falling at home to Georgia.

Arkansas fans hope that head coach Bobby Petrino has a better defense than giving up 52 points in its own backyard like a year ago against Georgia.

If Arkansas does the business against Louisiana-Monroe, it is beneficial that the Razorbacks will not see stud wideout A.J. Green when it visits Georgia on Sept. 18.

The Razorbacks are good enough to score points between the hedges, and if they start out 3-0, watch out Alabama if Mark Ingram doesn’t get up and running before facing Arkansas on Sept. 25.

This could get very interesting if Mallett and Petrino get hot early on.

If you look at the experience returning for Arkansas football in 2010 and you take a peek at the schedule, you could make a serious argument either way about whether or not Arkansas could play its way into the national title race.

Of course, the ball would seriously need to bounce Arkansas’s way in order for that to happen. If you are looking for a player to build a possible dark horse around in year three of the Bobby Petrino era in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks certainly have a signal-caller as talented as anybody in the country.

Ryan Mallett, a one-time starter as a true freshman at Michigan, is back to lead the offense at quarterback for Arkansas. Last season as a redshirt sophomore in his first season leading the Razorbacks, Mallett threw for 3,627 yards and 30 touchdowns, compared to just seven interceptions.

Mallett’s numbers are good news for Arkansas, coming off an 8-5 campaign with an overtime victory over East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl.

After opening the season with two tailor-made cupcakes in Tennessee Tech and Louisiana-Monroe, the success of the Razorbacks will be determined over the next four games.

The gauntlet begins on Sept. 18 at Georgia. After the road tilt in Athens, defending national champions Alabama come to Fayetteville on Sept. 25 before Arkansas rounds out the murder’s row slate with a neutral site game in Arlington, TX with Texas A&M and a road trip to Auburn.

Even if Arkansas finishes the first six games with a 3-3 record worst-case scenario, the Razorbacks would like their chances to finish 9-3 with LSU coming to Little Rock to cap-off the regular season. LSU and Arkansas have developed into a mini-rivalry with the last five games being decided by five points or less, two of them in overtime.

Last season, Arkansas was 3-4 at one point before winning four of its last five regular season games. When Arkansas was 1-2, the Razorbacks trounced Texas A&M comfortably, 47-19

If Arkansas can finish 6-0 in the first half of the campaign, a shock national title run is not out of the realm of possibilities for Mallett and Petrino.

Sophomore Ronnie Wingo Jr. looks set to get the start in the backfield for Arkansas. As a freshman in 2009, Wingo rushed for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Broderick Green, a load in the backfield at nearly 250 lbs., rushed for 11 touchdowns last season and also returns for Arkansas.

Greg Childs is the leading returnee at wide receiver coming off a campaign where he caught 48 passes for 897 yards and seven scores. Along with Childs, Joe Adams, and Cobi Hamilton averaged over 18 yards per grab. Adams and Hamilton combined for 48 grabs and 10 touchdowns.

Despite all the weapons in the world in the passing game, the success and blame of this offense falls squarely on the shoulders of the ballyhooed Mallett.

Mallett has the ability to shred defenses in the SEC, especially in his second year running an offense in what is unquestionably the best defensive conference in the country.

With Mallett firing on all cylinders, the Razorbacks will figure heavily into the Southeastern Conference race in 2010.

 

Barcelona.- Los tesoros arqueológicos de Arabia Saudí se podrá ver por primera vez en España en un exposición en Barcelona, una de las más destacadas de la próxima temporada, en la que también destacan la dedicada a la influencia de Degas en Picasso y la de joyas de artistas modernistas y de vanguardia.

En noviembre, CaixaFórum inaugurará la exposición "Rutas de Arabia", actualmente en el Louvre, que permitirá ver unas 300 obras, entre ellas esculturas monumentales, que ilustrarán las diferentes culturas que se sucedieron en la península arábiga desde la prehistoria hasta los inicios de la época moderna.

El Museu Picasso de Barcelona acogerá a partir de octubre una exposición que vinculará, por primera vez, la obra de dos de los artistas más importantes de la época moderna: Edgar Degas y Picasso.

Esta muestra explorará la fascinación que durante toda la vida experimentó Picasso por el trabajo y la personalidad de Degas, y abrazará ampliamente los medios utilizados por los dos artistas: dibujo, pastel, pintura, escultura, grabado y fotografía.

Entre las más de 120 obras de ambos artistas se podrán ver algunos ejemplos documentados de respuestas directas de Picasso a la obra de Degas.

También a partir de octubre, el MNAC presentará "Joyas de artista", que reunirá unas 300 joyas realizadas por artistas, desde el Modernismo hasta las primeras vanguardias históricas, que dialogarán con fotografías de moda de la época, esculturas y pinturas.

En esta primera exposición de este tipo organizada en España se podrán contemplar diseños originales de Josef Hoffmann, Josep Llimona, Serrurier-Bovy, Manolo Hugué, Paco Durrio, Pau Gargallo, Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Julio González y Henri Laurens.

La temporada de CaixaFórum Barcelona arranca en septiembre con "Humano, demasiado humano", en la que por primera vez la colección de arte contemporáneo de la Fundación la Caixa "dialoga" con obras de instituciones como el Museo Picasso de Barcelons y las fundaciones Dalí y Tàpies.

En esta muestra, obras de los años 50 y 60 de Picasso, Dalí y Tàpies convivirán con piezas de Antonio Saura, Manuel Millares, Antoni Clavé, José Guerrero y el Equipo Crónica.

A partir de noviembre, la Fundación Miró propone en "Let us face the future", un recorrido por el arte británico desde el final de la II Guerra Mundial hasta los años 60 y presenta, por primera vez en España, 88 obras de artistas británicos procedentes de las colecciones del British Council y el Arts Council, de la Tate Britain y del Pallant House Museum, de Chichester.

La muestra se inicia con obras de Henry Moore y Francis Bacon, que muestran el estado de Gran Bretaña y de Europa inmediatamente después de la guerra: el horror producido por los campos de concentración y la amenaza siempre presente de la bomba atómica.

David Hockney, Anthony Caro, Bridget Riley, Eduardo Paolozzi y Richard Hamilton son otros de los artistas representados en esta exposición de arte británico de posguerra.

La Fundación Caixa Catalunya expondrá en su sede de La Pedrera a partir del próximo mes una exposición antológica dedicada al diseñador Javier Mariscal y su obra, marcada por una notable influencia del cómic y la cultura pop.

Esta exposición sumergirá al espectador en el mundo multidisciplinario de la "factoría Mariscal" y lo introducirá en el seno del proceso creativo del "padre" de Cobi, la mascota de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona'92.

En la programación del CCCB otoñal destaca la exposición "El (D)efecto barroco", que será una exploración del relato identitario del hecho hispano y del hecho latino a través de un análisis de las políticas de la imagen, en la que uno de sus mitos más poderosos ha sido y es el barroco, que ha legitimado una visión interesada de la cultura tanto a nivel local como con la creación de un gran logo internacional: lo latino o lo español.

A través del cine, del vídeo, del documental, de la animación o de la instalación, esta exposición quiere ofrecer al visitante algunas alternativas en el debate acerca de las relaciones entre arte y poder en sociedades sumidas en conflictos de memoria histórica.

Con el curioso título "¿Está usted preparado para la televisión?", el MACBA explorará a partir de noviembre la gramática de categorías visuales y preposicionales forjadas por la televisión y su relación con el arte.

La exposición, que constatará cómo la televisión tiene una capacidad inusitada de transformarse, lo que la hace sustantiva para el arte contemporáneo, permitirá, además, mostrar una parte importante, y poco estudiada, de obras recientemente incorporadas a la colección del MACBA.

It won't be long before tailgaters turn up the grill for the college football and National Football League seasons. As for Major League Soccer, the race for the Supporters' Shield is heating up, and in the middle of it all are Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Galaxy are currently MLS's best team with a 13-4-4 record (43 points) and will have seven of their final nine games at home.

“It’s good,” Arena said during practice. “It’s been a long haul. We’ve been on the road a lot this year. It’s been tough and hopefully we can take advantage of our home games and win [them].”

Since early June, the Galaxy have been 2-3-1, and the need for consistency could not be emphasized any further.

“We’ve just got to tighten up the screws, I guess,” said forward Edson Buddle. “We have some time to get things right before the playoffs.”

"One of our advantages all year is being able to just look at the game that’s ahead of us. For us, that puts the most emphasis on Kansas City,” midfielder Chris Klein said during training. “When you look at the schedule and see the amount of games at home, I think that makes this game that much more important … to gain that confidence at home.

“Where we are right now, one of our clear goals is to win the Supporters’ Shield. When you do that, if you get out of that first round of the playoffs, you’re guaranteed home-field advantage again. The time is now for us to start establishing the Home Depot Center as a place where no team wants to come and play.”

With Columbus and Real Salt Lake having playing 11 home games in the 2010 MLS regular season, all signs point to the G's taking advantage of a golden home-cooking opportunity. But will it pay off this time? Stay tuned.

Michael Stephens...the next great Rookie?

Galaxy midfielder Michael Stephens may be on the outside looking in when compared to Philadelphia’s Danny Mwanga, New England’s Zack Schilawski, D.C. United’s Andy Najar and New York’s Tim Ream in the race for the MLS Rookie of the Year Award.

But don't tell that to his peers.'

“It wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone to see him get it,” midfielder Chris Birchall said.

Forward Mike Magee echoed the same sentiments.

“One hundred percent,” Magee said. “I’ve known what kind of guy he is and what kind of player he is. For him to come in right away and do what he’s done is pretty freakish.

“It’s a good time for him.”

As for Stephens, all the right chips seem to fall in all the right place.

“Coming into the season my first goal was to get playing time,” Stephens said. “You never know what’s going to happen when you go into a new environment, especially such a big jump from college to the professional game, but I’ve worked hard and prepared myself very well and I’m happy with where I’m at right now.”

As the old Spanish adage goes, Que sera, sera.


Donovan close to another milestone

Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan is one goal away from tying the club record for most regular season goals in Galaxy history.

Current assistant coach Cobi Jones had 70 goals in his 12-year career. Since 2005, Landon has scored 69 in the regular season. However, when including the MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup, the Champions League/Champions Cup, the SuperLiga, and the U.S. Open Cup matches, Donovan already has scored the most goals in club history with 87.

Here's hoping for a penalty conversion, No. 10.


Dunivant is back...and Bowen too!

Not only was defender Todd Dunivant back training with the Galaxy after suffering neck and back spasms, but so was forward Tristan Bowen, who recovered from flu-like symptoms.

“I had a rib out of place and I couldn’t breathe the last two weeks,” Dunivant said on his injury during training. “I had a little bit of it before the (Real) Madrid game but I kind of played through it. It finally got to the point where it was so bad I could hardly lay down.

“Something like this makes you appreciate your health. You take it for granted sometimes, but it’s our livelihood and if you don’t have it, it makes all the difference in the world. It was difficult watching the two games."

“I still have a little shortness of breath,” Bowen said, “but you just have to keep going at it. I haven’t been sick in about six or seven months. I guess it just caught up with me.”

Midfielder David Beckham will be removed from the Disabled List after Saturday's match against the Kansas City Wizards at the Home Depot Center. Also out this week is defender Gregg Berhalter, who is also recovering from a viral infection.
