On May 1st, Sony was apparently "unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers," and now, it's spinning its wheels in order to restore security on the network and "ensure" that user data is safe. Mr. Seybold seems to understand that you're overly anxious about getting back into the swing of things, and he's even going so far as to ask your trust that Sony's doing "everything [it] can" to get the lights blinking once more. Oh, and if you were planning on visiting that source link just to find the new ETA... don't. Sony's planning to update you "as soon as it can."

Background

Normal and pathological processes entail the production of oxidative substances that can damage biological molecules and harm physiological functions. Organisms have evolved complex mechanisms of antioxidant defense, and any imbalance between oxidative challenge and antioxidant protection can depress fitness components and accelerate senescence. While the role of oxidative stress in pathogenesis and aging has been studied intensively in humans and model animal species under laboratory conditions, there is a dearth of knowledge on its role in shaping life-histories of animals under natural selection regimes. Yet, given the pervasive nature and likely fitness consequences of oxidative damage, it can be expected that the need to secure efficient antioxidant protection is powerful in molding the evolutionary ecology of animals. Here, we test whether overall antioxidant defense varies with age and predicts long-term survival, using a wild population of a migratory passerine bird, the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica), as a model.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Plasma antioxidant capacity (AOC) of breeding individuals was measured using standard protocols and annual survival was monitored over five years (2006–2010) on a large sample of selection episodes. AOC did not covary with age in longitudinal analyses after discounting the effect of selection. AOC positively predicted annual survival independently of sex. Individuals were highly consistent in their relative levels of AOC, implying the existence of additive genetic variance and/or environmental (including early maternal) components consistently acting through their lives.

Conclusions

Using longitudinal data we showed that high levels of antioxidant protection positively predict long-term survival in a wild animal population. Present results are therefore novel in disclosing a role for antioxidant protection in determining survival under natural conditions, strongly demanding for more longitudinal eco-physiological studies of life-histories in relation to oxidative stress in wild populations.

Background

Sexually transmitted infections (STI) have made a resurgence in many rapidly developing regions of southern China, but there is little understanding of the social changes that contribute to this spatial distribution of STI. This study examines county-level socio-demographic characteristics associated with syphilis and gonorrhea in Guangdong Province.

Methods/Principal Findings

This study uses linear regression and spatial lag regression to determine county-level (n = 97) socio-demographic characteristics associated with a greater burden of syphilis, gonorrhea, and a combined syphilis/gonorrhea index. Data were obtained from the 2005 China Population Census and published public health data. A range of socio-demographic variables including gross domestic product, the Gender Empowerment Measure, standard of living, education level, migrant population and employment are examined. Reported syphilis and gonorrhea cases are disproportionately clustered in the Pearl River Delta, the central region of Guangdong Province. A higher fraction of employed men among the adult population, higher fraction of divorced men among the adult population, and higher standard of living (based on water availability and people per room) are significantly associated with higher STI cases across all three models. Gross domestic product and gender inequality measures are not significant predictors of reported STI in these models.

Conclusions/Significance

Although many ecological studies of STIs have found poverty to be associated with higher reported STI, this analysis found a greater number of reported syphilis cases in counties with a higher standard of living. Spatially targeted syphilis screening measures in regions with a higher standard of living may facilitate successful control efforts. This analysis also reinforces the importance of changing male sexual behaviors as part of a comprehensive response to syphilis control in China.

Background

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a global public health problem. Therefore, novel and effective drugs that show few side-effects are needed. Early literature studies indicated that Huangqi injection is one of the most commonly used traditional Chinese patent medicines for CHF in China. As a large number of clinical studies has been carried out and published, it is essential to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Huangqi injection. Therefore, we carried out this systematic review under the support of the framework of the Joint Sino-Italian Laboratory (JoSIL).

Objectives

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Huangqi injection for CHF according to the available scientific knowledge.

Methods

An extensive search including PubMed, EMBASE, CBM, the Cochrane Library and Chinese literature databases was performed up to July 2008. Clinical trials regarding Huangqi injection for the treatment of CHF were searched for, irrespective of languages. The quality of each trial was assessed according to the Cochrane Reviewers' Handbook 5.0, and RevMan 5.0 provided by the Cochrane Collaboration and STATA 9.2 were used for data analysis.

Results

After selection of 1,205 articles, 62 RCTs and quasi-RCTs conducted in China and published in Chinese journals were included in the review. The methodological quality of the trials was low. In most trials inclusion and exclusion criteria were not specified. Furthermore, only one study evaluated the outcomes for drug efficacy after an adequate period of time. For these reasons and because of the different baseline characteristics we did not conduct a meta-analysis.

Conclusions

Although available studies are not adequate to draw a conclusion on the efficacy and safety of Huangqi injection (a traditional Chinese patent medicine), we hope that our work could provide useful experience on further studies on Huangqi injections. The overall level of TCM clinical research needs to be improved so that the efficacy of TCM can be evaluated by the international community and possibly some TCM can enter into the international market.

Hacker group Anonymous denied that it was in any way involved with the recent PlayStation Network data theft, but some of its members believe otherwise.

I was looking at some code today and it reminded me of a very common performance issue - reloading data around calls. Suppose I have some code like:

     }

You might be surprised to find that "variable" is reloaded very iteration of the loop. The reason for this is that the loop calls another function - either func1() or func2() and the compiler knows that the function might change the value of "variable" - so to be correct it needs to be reloaded.

This problem can be fixed by caching a local copy of the variable. The compiler "knows" that local (or stack based) variables don't get modified by function calls.

However, the problem is more general than this, in C++ you might observe a reloading of variables that are members of objects - for similar reasons. The general rule for avoiding this is to examine every load or store in the hot region of code to check whether it is necessary, or whether it has been introduced because of a function call.

Shard-Query is an open source tool kit which helps improve the performance of queries against a MySQL database by distributing the work over multiple machines and/or multiple cores. This is similar to the divide and conquer approach that Hive takes in combination with Hadoop. Shard-Query applies a clever approach to parallelism which allows it to significantly improve the performance of queries by spreading the work over all available compute resources. In this test, Shard-Query averages a nearly 6x (max over 10x) improvement over the baseline, as shown in the following graph: One significant advantage of Shard-Query over Hive is that it works with existing MySQL data sets and queries. Another advantage is that it works with all MySQL storage engines. This set of benchmarks evaluates how well Infobright community edition (ICE) performs in combination with Shard-Query. Data set It was important to choose a data set that was large enough to create queries that would run for a decent amount of time, but not so large that it was difficult to work with. The ontime flight performance statistics data, available online from the United States Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) made a good candidate for testing, as it had been tested before: Another MPB post Lucid DB testing The raw data is a completely denormalized schema (single table). In order to demonstrate the power of Shard-Query it is important to test complex queries involving joins and aggregation. A star schema is the most common OLAP/DW data model, since it typically represents a data mart. See also: “Data mart or data warehouse?”. As it is the most common data model, it is desirable to benchmark using a star schema, even though it involves work to transform the data. Star schema Transforming the data was straightforward. I should note that I did this preprocessing with the MyISAM storage engine, then I dumped the data to tab delimited flat files using mysqldump. I started by loading the raw data from the BTS into a single database table called ontime_stage. The selected operating system was Fedora 14. Oracle VirtualBox OSE was used to create six virtual machines, each running Fedora 14. Each of the virtual machines was granted 4GB of memory. A SATA 7200rpm RAID10 battery backed RAID array was used as the underlying storage for the virtual machines. Baseline: The MySQL command line client was used to execute the a script file containing the 11 queries. This same SQL script was used in the Shard-Query tests. For the baseline, the results and response times were captured with the \T command. The queries were executed on a single database schema containing all of the data. Before loading, there was approximately 23GB of data. After loading, ICE compressed this data to about 2GB. The test virtual machine was assigned 12 cores in this test. Scale-up: Shard-Query was given the following configuration file, which lists only one server. A single schema (ontime_one) contained all of the data. The test virtual machine was assigned 12 cores for this test. The same VM was used as the previous baseline test. This VM was rebooted between tests. A SQL script was fed to the run_query.php script and the output was captured with the ‘tee’ command. $ cat one.ini [default] user=mysql db=ontime_one password= port=5029 column=date_id mapper=hash gearman=127.0.0.1:7000 inlist=* between=* [shard1] host=192.168.56.102 Scale-out In addition to adding parallelism via scale-up, Shard-Query can improve performance of almost all queries by spreading them over more than one physical server. This is called “scaling out” and it allows Shard-Query to vastly improve the performance of queries which have to examine a large amount of data. Shard-Query includes a loader (loader.php) which can be used to either split a data into multiple files (for each shard, for later loading) or it can load files directly, in parallel, to multiple hosts. Shard-Query will execute queries in parallel over all of these machines. With enough machines, massive parallelism is possible and very large data sets may be processed. Due to ICE limitations, the data was split before loading. The splitting/loading process will be described in another post. Complex queries Shard-Query was tested with the simple single table version of this data set in a previous blog post. Previous testing was limited to a subset of Vadim’s test queries (see that post). As this new test schema is normalized, Vadim’s test queries must be modified to reflect the more complex schema structure. For this benchmark each of the original queries has been rewritten to conform to the new schema, and additionally two new test queries have been added. To model real world complexity, each of the test queries feature at least one join, and many of the filter conditions are placed on attributes in the dimension tables. It will be very interesting to test these queries on various engines and databases. Following is a list of the queries, followed by a response time table recording the actual response times for each query. The queries should be self-explanatory. Performance, at a glance You will notice that Shard-Query is faster in nearly every case. The performance of the queries is improved significantly by scaling out, even more so than scaling up, because additional parallelism is added beyond what can be exploited by scale up. Scale up can improve query performance when there is enough resources to support the added parallelism, and when one of the the following are in used in the query: BETWEEN or IN clauses, subqueries in the FROM clause, UNION or UNION ALL clauses. If none of those features are used, then parallelism can’t be added. Q9 is an example of such a query. . Thus, in the scale up configuration it does not perform any better than the baseline, and actually performed just a little worse. Shard-Query can be used with existing data sets easily, improving the performance of queries significantly if they use common query features like BETWEEN or IN. It is also possible to spread your data over multiple machines, scaling out to improve query response times significantly. These queries are a great test of Shard-Query features. How much progress is Britain making on gay rights under a Tory-led coalition? Comedian Rhona Cameron, one of the first out lesbians on TV, takes on gay Tory MP Nigel Evans

Over the past few weeks, doubts have been raised about how far gay equality has really come: a male couple were thrown out of a Soho pub for kissing, it was revealed that no data had been collected on the Conservative election promise not to deport gay asylum seekers, and the ban on gay men donating blood may be lifted only if they haven't had sex for 10 years. Emine Saner brought together comedian and author Rhona Cameron and Nigel Evans, Tory MP and deputy speaker, who came out in December, to discuss. First, they talked about reports this week that kissing between same-sex couples on television could be banned before the watershed following a review.

Rhona Cameron: I know the review is about any sexual scenes before the watershed, but when it gets this "gay" focus in reports, it's very worrying.

Nigel Evans: It's sad that it was portrayed in that way. I don't think David Cameron would agree to only banning gay kissing before 9pm, but not heterosexual kissing. On equality legislation alone, it would simply not happen.

RC: The Conservative party does, as it stands, have more out gay people than other parties. It must have been difficult for you, or anyone who had to live a life that wasn't true to their heart, and I'm very pleased for you that you came out and are able to be free in what you are.

NE: I get asked what impact it's had on me, and I would say none, really.

RC: No, there will have been in your inner world …

NE: Yes, definitely.

RC: You couldn't have come out 20 or 30 years ago.

NE: It would have been a lot more difficult. I asked Gareth Thomas, the rugby player who came out, to give me some advice. Chris Smith [the former Labour MP], in coming out when he did was groundbreaking. Or someone like Peter Tatchell. I have huge respect for him the more I've read about him, and about how he has been pilloried for the battles he has fought. For me, being something like the 22nd or 23rd openly gay MP is not brave at all. I helped only a small number. Look at the fact that [cricketer] Steven Davies came out the other day, and Anton Hysén, the Swedish footballer. Sport remains a problem.

RC: There are no out lesbians in major league sport.

NE: If only we could get some gay footballers to come forward, that would help. It's daft to say there are no gay footballers in the premier league – of course there are. Every one of them who could possibly find the courage to come out would help so many people.

RC: I was one of the first out lesbians on British television, and I've often been the one who has had to represent the lesbian thing. It must be nice not having to mention it.

NE: I'm not a poster boy for gays, either.

RC: That's a title, isn't it!

NE: I'm too bloody old.

RC: When did you join the Conservatives?

NE: At 16, in the mid-70s.

RC: It does stun me that you can be gay and be in the Conservative party. How did you feel as a young person knowing you were gay, being involved in a party that put into force draconian measures like section 28, and the legacy of that? The reason people like me were bullied at a young age, which affected me for the rest of my life, was because we grew up in a climate of persecution and oppression. Are you telling me that when you heard the beginnings of section 28, you didn't take a hit for that, you didn't feel something in your heart?

NE: No, because I was going through denial, and what I would describe as my Neanderthal phase. It was just stupid, I clearly wasn't thinking. I probably thought, wrongly, that this is what the public want and we should concede it [Evans backed section 28, and once voted against lowering the age of consent]. Of course, I was completely wrong. I said it when I came out, I showed absolutely no leadership, whereas David Cameron has. When you say you can't work out how there are so many gays in the Tory party – David is hugely instrumental in that, because of his approach to gay issues and equality.

RC: There was some embarrassment around his interview with Martin Popplewell [Cameron made several gaffes when interviewed by the Gay Times in the run-up to the election]. He didn't look too comfortable then, did he?

NE: No. There was a hiccup there.

RC: Sometimes what they say isn't really what they feel, and when they're caught out, they say what they feel. To be fair, Chris Grayling [the Tory MP who said before the general election that B&B; owners should be allowed to bar homosexual guests] was dealt with, and I have to applaud that.

NE: He's been rewired.

RC: How do you feel about the news that the ban on gay men giving blood may end? Even though it only applies to men who haven't had sex for 10 years.

NE: Because of my position as deputy speaker, I'm not allowed to express an opinion, but what I can say is that a lot of my gay friends feel very unhappy. Equality is basically the rule of thumb, and that's what it should be irrespective of what the issue happens to be. If you have distinguishing elements between gay and not gay, you have a problem.

RC: It's ludicrous. There are so many heterosexual men who have unprotected sex and give blood. The Anthony Nolan Trust takes bone marrow from gay men. Do you feel your party are sticking to their promises on equality?

NE: As far as I can see, yes. Irrespective of what you're saying about the Martin Popplewell interview, David is very much at the forefront of opening doors, and there being so many openly gay members of parliament has helped the issue. There are still some people in all parties who are gay and haven't come out yet for whatever reason, and I suspect there are homophobic people in all parties. But things have moved on to a fundamental degree.

RC: Homophobic bullying is still one of the major reasons for suicide and self-harm among young people. I acknowlege and congratulate certain steps forward. But on the other hand, we can't sit here and make out it's all OK and easy to be gay.

NE: We're still getting gay people being beaten up in the streets of London, which I find incredible.

RC: I got an email recently from a 15-year-old girl struggling enormously – in this day and age. Something like 90% of teachers have said there is homophobic bullying. Seven out of 10 teachers have said they received no support when they reported it. What the Tories did was swore a pledge to help tackle homophobic bullying in schools, and yet those percentages have not come down. And there has been an increase in homophobic attacks. There are people who are demoted at work, and those who are still living sad lives of lies, who can't be themselves. If a party goes into power promising things – equality, tackling homophobic bullying, more support for gay asylum seekers – they should stick to that.

I tried rolling back the hotfixes but this did not resolve the issue.

I have since upgraded to R3 to see whether that resolved the issue, it has not.
