The Nendoroids don't hit until June, and these come later (in August), but either way you have lots of cute merch to choose from. Anyone pre-order either of the choices already?

This is the first of three reviews as part of my post analysis covering the very well executed REEL Anime 2010 that wrapped up today in Melbourne and interstate. Overall it was an incredibly successful event (making the top 20 box office sales) held by Madman highlighting some seriously brilliant Japanese anime.
A gorgeously detailed, action packed but ultimately hollow package that focuses on the base elements of a cult sensation in order recap the series and draw in a new audience.
This is how I would not describe Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance. The prior description applies solely to the barely reboot level of the phenomenon in the guise of 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. Comparable to the delight of the wholly new and genuinely exciting alternate path that 2.0 has taken, for long-time fans of the show 1.0 is almost an irrelevant viewing and even slightly disappointing. This feeling followed me into 2.0, but after the opening credits; new and exciting characters and details emerged and before long the movie took on a life of its own, and is near perfect for it.
All of the positive elements of 1.0 are present here; the focus on stunning visuals and the less serious demeanour that is a nice break from the extreme angst of the series. 1.0, however, was far from perfect, and it seems Gainax have listened as 2.0 improves on it in every conceivable way. It is vintage Evangelion; the nods and winks to past events, the fan service and yes some angst, but it is all handled in a more mature way. In regards to the pacing every serious, comedic and action-oriented scene flows well into each other and this gives all of the characters a more grounded sense of realism as the mundane every day within the turmoil both internal and external are stressed. Even their attitudes and personalities of excessive stubbornness and unnatural depression in the series, is given a looser more human feel.
As in the series, each main character's introduction is given a very important feel; their entry to Tokyo-3 and NERV is completely revamped, updated and the execution is a love letter to all the fans, particularly the soundtrack, which is as strong as ever and an integral part of the intensity and sincerity of the battles and the various interactions in 2.0.
2.0 sets viewers in the midst of what would normally be the half -way mark of the series. The intentions, secrets and undeveloped plot are quickly revealed, in a seamless style of witty dialog and straight-talking between Gendo, Kaji, Misato and the rest of the cast. This time the cards are on the table and unlike the series, there is much more space to breathe and take all of this information in as it is newly revealed and diverges from the original. One famous scene from the series where Shinji helps Kaji water his garden is given more immediacy and impact here, as previous he states to Shinji "when I am gone, please water my melons" but in 2.0 he says, in a more believable manner "protect Katsuragi for me."
The pangs of nostalgia are the highlights of 2.0, essentially taking every great scene and enhancing it beyond the original. In line with the series corruption and preservation are underlying themes that serve to support the central plot of the human instrumentality project, rebuilding life as we know it and half of the central concepts are given a complete re-haul.
Gainax have really upped the ante, everything is bigger, clearer and more immediate, especially the Angels, as they make their way to NERV HQ and the Geofront, each one much more powerful and destructive than the last, in what is an uphill battle for the Evangelion units as each battle raises the stakes higher than ever culminating into a truly mouth-wide-open finale duel.
Some of the changes are not quite as subtle, mainly to let long-time fans know that the changes were intentional. I particularly enjoyed Toji losing a chocolate wrapper prize and stating "Damn didn't get lucky" in the midst of choosing the new pilot for the Angel Evangelion, it even later shows him in hospital with his now recovered sister; another welcome deviation from the doom and gloom. However, there can be no advancement as the title stresses, as the pilot of that Angel is severely injured. Shinji, although with much more humility and strength still 'runs away' after he finds out who it was.
In closing, this is, dare I say, better than the original series. It improves on each key sequence and story element in such a major way it is quite hard to look back, although at the same time it is also hard to advance. Each character is given more hope, more depth; Rei blocking Asuka's slap in the infamous long lift scene was a very shocking but cathartic moment, and there are many like this. The cruel world, the nature of the beast is the final judgment however, and every element of the show recedes to welcome the inevitable apocalypse, only it does it in such a masterful way that it is truly hard to fault Evangelion 2.0, both in terms of its method and its madness.

Tony Takezaki no Evangelion.

Rumors started to circulate around Twitter today that anime luminary Satoshi Kon, director of such truly brilliant films as
Millennium Actress and
Paprika, has died at the age of 47. One of the first reports came in from
Takeda Yasuhiro, a founding member of
Gainax, the animation studio most famous for producing
Neon Genesis Evangelion. Now both
Ani-Gamers and
Anime Reel is reporting that the above tweet is most likely true and while confirmation will have to wait until it's daytime in Japan,
Anime Reel writes that other sources have confirmed Yasuhiro's claim, including Masao Maruyama, president of Madhouse Studios (Note: Maruyama didn't say Kon died explicitly, just that a major filmmaker had passed away). According to
Anime-Gamers' source, Kon died of cancer.
There's still a chance that this could just be a nasty and rather inexplicable rumor but it looks less and less likely. We will update you if the situation changes and as more news becomes available.

EDIT 2: Anime News Network has reported on Vowles' confirmation, leading me to finally lay to rest my doubts about the death. Ani-Gamers will likely run coverage in the near future to pay tribute to the beloved, award-winning director.
We are currently hearing widespread, unconfirmed reports of the death of anime director Satoshi Kon (Millennium Actress, Paprika, Paranoia Agent). It all began with a Japanese tweet from Gainax producer Yasuhiro Takeda alleging that Kon had died today at age 47. From there, the rumor snowballed across Twitter in multiple languages, but due to the time difference between North America and Japan, there has been no official Japanese confirmation as of yet. Nevertheless, Anime culture researcher Alex Leavitt translated a tweet from Takeda that confirms his confidence in his prior statement and provides a possible cause of death ("Seems real, heard it was cancer").
There is little that can be done now but wait for an official report out of Japan, but if this news turns out to be true, it represents a powerful blow to the anime industry. Rest assured, Ani-Gamers will keep on top of this emerging story and update this post as more information surfaces.

No, because this year I will be rooming with BakaTanuki and Lwelyk (along with Internet Heroes the Reverse Thieves and many others), while Ink and Uncle Yo will be off handling their own sleeping arrangements. Yes, friends, that is FIVE Ani-Gamers writers at one convention. If you ever wanted to get our autograph and then punch us in the face for thinking anybody wanted our autograph, there has never been a better chance!
Oh yeah, and we'll have lots of coverage, too! There are press conferences to attend, panels to write up, and podcasts to record, not to mention a final con report to write. If you can't get to the convention, please do your best to enjoy it through our coverage. Think about it this way: At least you won't have to listen to teenagers screaming "buttscratchers!" in your ear for three days.
Just to get the word out before the break, I want to let everybody know that I will be running my character designs panel, "The Changing Faces of Anime," after its positive reception at AnimeNEXT 2010, and Uncle Yo will be performing his stand-up comedy as well as his new "Embracing the Robot Apocalypse" panel and "Anime One-Night Stands." Below, I've included tentative itineraries for Ink, Uncle Yo and myself. If I get itineraries from the other bloggers, I'll be sure to post them in here.
.otakon2010_tbl td { padding: 2px 5px 2px 5px; }
We begin with Ink's schedule, which is nicely organized and shows a sense of focus and thoughtfulness greatly envied by his editor-in-chief.

E eu admito:
quero uma lambreta dessas.

I'm not going to be humble about this week's gallery -- it's absolutely killer. The internet had some incredible toy photos to share this week. You'll see some great new shots from toy photographer Kodomut in there, as well as an awesome shot of the characters from the old Gainax anime His and Her Circumstances, more Hoi Hoi-san mods, an incredible Princess Mononoke bust, and the most hilarious photos of Shoujo S and the Duke Togo Figma that I have ever seen. You're in for a treat -- enjoy!

Irreverent celebrations of science fiction, jam-packed with references, and propelled by a do-it-yourself attitude, the Daicon anime represent the hopes and dreams of the first otaku generation, born in the 1960's, and they continue to delight whole new generations of otaku. http://www.cjas.org/~leng/daicon.htm

Still, cute characters are cute characters, and this new Chara Fortune Series set from MegaHouse definitely pours on the sugar with this release. You can preorder the set of five now, which includes two versions of Pandanekomo along with the three girls. The set is about $15, which is pretty darn cheap, so if you liked the show you just might find a home for these dangling on your keychain.

This time, taken from the anime that you can experience a hundred times over and still never quite understand, Haruko Haruhara of FLCL infamy! Hey, quit looking at me like that. Next thing you know, you might just be sitting on the pavement spitting those teeth out boy! Kannaya andVirtualGirl throw together a great cosplay costume for everyone’sfavoritemanic, guitar-armed weirdo, namely Haruko Haruharu (and the more subdued, spaced out Mamimi Samejima) of thatcompletelyinsane and over the top GAINAX classic, Kazuya Tsurumaki’s FLCL – or Furi Kuri if you must. As you can see from the pictures above and below, the girls have pretty much hit their respective characters’ look spot on, so hats off for a job well done! :) As for Haruko herself, if you don’t know about her then you’d better hit that anime classics rack sooner than later, but for those of you who couldn’t be bothered, here’s the info download: Basically she is Mabase’s newest resident, an extraterrestrial investigator for the Galactic Space Police Brotherhood. Somehow she wangles her way into becoming the Nandaba household maid, while secretly working to find Atomsk, the most powerful space pirate in the whole known galaxy. Her bass guitar is capable of creating an N.O. portal in poor little Naota’s head, though what comes through that portal is mostly quite unexpected. Like Medical Mechanica robots for instance. You know, the ones with television screens for heads. As for Mamimi, well she’s a high school truant, possible pyromaniac and just happens to be Naota’s brother’s ex-girlfriend. She’s lonely, depressed, a heavy smoker and most of all – pretty much spaced out all the time. (So not real marriage material in other words!) Hey. she's armed with a mean-looking guitar. I'd sit down if she told me to as well! Related Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flcl

If there’s anything you can rely on Gainax for, it’s that you can expect some weird-ass projects coming out of that studio. If there’s anything you can rely on Gainax for, it’s that you can expect some weird-ass projects coming out of that studio. From brain-melters like Evangelion to romance series like KareKano to robo-maid comedies like Mahoromatic to a show about kids in kindergarten, Gainax is nothing if not diverse. And it’s about to get even more so, as their new project, announced just after a Gurren-Lagann Parallel Works event, is apparently about panty-stockings. Y’see, it’s called “Pansuto”, a Japanese loanword for hosiery. Via: Japanator Wow the Anime industry must have fallen on hard times to scrape the barrel this low for ideas, next time they are going to start borrowing ideas from hentai shows. This makes me kind of sad and falls in perfectly what I ranted about a couple of months ago. And one of the main reasons why I stopped watching Anime. This is just another “milestone” for this entertainment form, which seems to have gone into a downward spiral of prepubescent fan-service. And I cant believe Gainex is involved in creating this mindless drivel… Filed under: Anime Tagged: Anime
