“Nothing is foolproof, Iz. Condoms tear and the pill isn’t always magical in its ability to stop the body doing what it’s programmed to do.”
“I know but…”
“Yeah, you never think it will happen to you.”
But it did. Izzy, at thirty-two years of age, was preggers, up the duff, and had the proverbial bun in the oven. She thought back to the man and the moment. That was easy to do. There had been no other lovers in her life since that night five weeks ago. In fact, none for months before that. Izzy had gone cold turkey on men. While she enjoyed sex, she wanted more. And then Izzy met him.
“He said he was a prince.”
“They all do, honey, when they want sex,” quipped Cilla.
“Yeah, I know but still there was something—”
“Princely about him? Did he have a black credit card?”
“Huh?” Izzy wondered what tangent Cilla was taking.
Her friend waved her hands in the air. “Oh you know. When Prince Fredrick of Denmark met Aussie girl Mary Donaldson he pulled out a black credit card and everyone knew he was a prince.”
“That wasn’t what he pulled out that caught my attention.”

Jered Weaver gave White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen something else to worry about other than his struggling bullpen.

Filling in for the injured Jake Peavy, Phil Humber was charged with four runs, all in the fourth inning, as the White Sox lost 4-3 to Weaver and Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

The Los Angeles Angels bullpen extended its scoreless streak to 25 1-3 innings and Weaver (4-0) held the White Sox to three runs on four hits in seven innings. Two of the runs were earned. The 2010 strikeout leader added four to his 2011 total and leads the majors with 31 this season.

"He is one of the best guys in the league for a reason, but we handled him pretty well. We made him pitch," said Guillen. "We knew it was going to be a battle against him, but if we play like the way we did today we're going to win a lot of games."

The White Sox, who have loss three of four, got four scoreless innings from a bullpen that has already blown six saves.

"I feel confident about our team, we can very easily have a better record. Let's put it this way, if this is the worst we're going to play and we're still winning games I think that's real positive," Gordon Beckham said. "You know the bullpen is going to do better, we're going to hit and the starting pitching has been great. If this is our kind of bump in the road than we're going to be really good."

Fernando Rodney worked out of trouble with two on and one out in the eighth and Jordan Walden worked a perfect ninth to preserve the win for Weaver, the first in the majors to reach four wins.

Maicer Izturis had three hits and drove in two runs Friday to help Angels win their third straight and seventh in the last nine games.

"We got the four-spot but had a lot more opportunities. We've got to do a better job with runners in scoring position as the season moves on. It's kinda been plaguing us a little early on. Izzy got the big hit for us with two outs. Then we just played defense and got it done," Angels manger Mike Scioscia said.

Weaver retired the first six batters he faced, but found trouble in the third inning. He hit A.J. Pierzynski in the back on a 1-2 pitch to lead off and Alexei Ramirez blooped a single into shallow center to put runners on first and second.

Brent Morel then botched a bunt, popping out to catcher Hank Conger. Juan Pierre followed with a fly out to left field, but Weaver couldn't escape unscathed. Beckham ripped a 1-1 pitch into left field to drive in Pierzynski. Weaver rebounded to strike out Adam Dunn for the second time.

The Angels responded immediately with a four-run fourth. Only two of the four runs that Humber (1-1) allowed were earned thanks to a bad throw by Morel.

Humber struck out four and gave up six hits, but was hit hard all night.

"It was a battle. I didn't have control of most of my pitches for the most part," Humber said. "They got some hits to fall in, strung together and I walked Vernon there. That was probably the thing I was most disappointed with nobody on. It kind of came back to bite me and it was disappointing as far as giving the team a chance to win. Weaver is going to tough and giving up four in the fourth inning was not what I was looking for."

Heavy rain returned in the bottom of the fifth as the game became official, prompting the umpiring crew to call for the tarp with two outs in the top of the sixth. The game resumed after 30 minutes.

Despite the delay, Weaver stayed in the game, but gave up a two-run homer by Dunn just two batters after retaking the mound.

"It wasn't too bad. Obviously a half-hour delay, you can have a half-hour inning sometimes. It wasn't too bad. Just tried to stay up here and stay warm. I was able to play some catch, actually in the hallway here, that was kind of weird," Weaver said.

Heavy rain came again in the ninth as the Angels took the field for the bottom half. The players briefly took shelter in the dugout, but reappeared just a minute later, before the grounds crew could take out the tarp, and began warming up again. Play resumed after just a 3-minute delay.

The Mets' shaky pitchers were spared for a night from the Colorado Rockies.

Tuesday night's game in New York was postponed by rain and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Thursday, giving the rolling Rockies a rest on the road and the Mets a rainy, if temporary, reprieve.

New York has lost five out of six, and the bullpen has a 5.21 ERA, allowing 50 hits and 18 walks in 38 innings. The .323 opponents' batting average against Mets relievers in the highest in the major leagues.

General manager Sandy Alderson has already refashioned the 'pen. Among the newcomers is a familiar face — former Mets prospect Jason Isringhausen.

He's one of two players who earned manager Terry Collins' confidence in an otherwise discouraging 7-6 loss to Colorado on Monday night.

"I'm not afraid to use Izzy at any time," Collins said before Tuesday's game was rained out.

That's in part because he aced his return to the Mets, escaping a jam in the seventh inning Monday night and pumping his fist in celebration.

Also back in the bullpen is Ryota Igarashi. He was called up from Buffalo on Sunday after Alderson designated for assignment reliever Blaine Boyer after he was the losing pitcher in the 11th inning against Washington.

Also gaining Collins' confidence recently has been second baseman Daniel Murphy, who was slated to hit second for New York on Tuesday night.

"I think Murph played very, very well last night," Collins said. "His energy ... is infectious."

It will have to wait. Meanwhile, the Rockies don't mind cooling their heels a bit.

"It's nice to get an off day," shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "We're in the middle of 16 days in a row, so we'll take one if we get one. It's not breaking up any momentum at all."

If it were, Tulowitzki would have plenty to lose. He has four home runs already, including a shot on Monday night that wound up providing the margin in Colorado's 7-6 win.

The Rockies' cleanup hitter is getting excellent protection in the lineup from No. 3 hitter Carlos Gonzalez (hitting .306) and No. 2 Daniel Herrera, who has an absurd .636 on-base percentage.

"He's a tremendous bat handler," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "The guy gets it. He understands how to work an at-bat."

The game was called off in Queens shortly after the Yankees scrubbed a scheduled start against the Orioles in the Bronx.

Mets lefty Jonathon Niese and New York's beleaguered bullpen were going to face Rockies righty Esmil Rogers.

Instead, the two will face off Wednesday, pushing New York's R.A. Dickey back to the opener of the traditional doubleheader on Thursday. Chris Capuano will take the ball for the Mets in the nightcap.

The Rockies haven't announced pitchers for Thursday.

Lefty Jorge De La Rosa, originally scheduled to pitch for the Rockies Wednesday night, will now get at least one extra day for his finger to heal.

This is Colorado's only visit to New York. Tuesday night's game was to be the second of a four-game series.

Thursday's doubleheader will start at 12:10 p.m. in place of the originally scheduled 1:10 getaway day start.

NOTES: New York ranks second in the majors with 46 walks, and its bullpen has blown three saves already. ... Too bad, though, I'm still at it.

I won't lie, a lot of my hesitation is similar to what's been stated very eloquently at Izzy Mom, Mommy Needs Coffee and several other places as of late.

I think I've even said it here before, blogging is just different now, and I've often wondered if the drivel I've shared here for the past 8 years is even worth it anymore.

I suppose it is because I enjoy it, so I'm still here.

I do, however, need to stop saying how I'm "just going to write", and you know...write because I'm even annoying myself.

Izzy is a Black White Paint Tennessee walking horse mare. She has an absolutely gorgeous 2 foot long mane that covers her neck, and a mixed tail that drags the ground. I'm here back in Chicago for PMA's Annual Marketing Conference which kicked off yesterday at the Fairmont Hotel. The theme of this two-day event this year is Game Changer, the marketing conference of Big Wins and Bold Thinkers. It's also PMA's 100 anniversary. Bonnie Carlson, PMA's President, welcomed some 200 attendees in the morning with a historical trip down marketing's memory lane, from the first coupon for a new fountain drink called Coca-Cola, to today's viral video sensation, Old Spice Man.

The rest of the morning consisted of some interesting presentations from big brands. Lisa Klauser from Unilever recapped one of my favorite campaigns, Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty, along with the product launch of PF Chang's restaurant quality food at home and the a peak at Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan. Dean Barrett from McDonald's took us around the world with some of their heart-warming ads and shared info on some of their newer, better quality food products.
After a quick coffee break, Elizabeth Charles from PetCo got my attention with a photo of her and her dog, a golden retriever. I immediately started missing my golden, Shadow, along with Izzy, my little King Charles spaniel. I learned a new demographic acronym from Elizabeth that I hadn't heard before....LOHAS, Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability. These are consumers who follow a lifestyle of wellness. They have strong values and community involvement. They have high brand loyalty, but are pragmatic and proactive shoppers. They also skew higher in eduction and are influencers and early adopters. These are exactly the group of shoppers PetCo targeted to promote the fact that they have the largest selection of natural pet products and increased this part of their business by 20%.
For our luncheon keynote we were treated to a very insightful talk from Jim Lecinski, Managing Director of U.S. Sales for Google. He spoke to us about the concept of mental models and how they define our world. It's not just a marketing term, but something that relates to everyday life, such as our standard three meals a day eating habit.

In the traditional brand mental model it starts with some sort of stimuli (an ad, review, recommendation) to the "1st Moment" (shelf/purchase), to finally the "2nd Moment (usage/experience). The 2nd moment is the most important because it's the moment of truth...does the product/service live up to the brand's promise?

However, over the past several years there has been a big shift in this traditional marketing model. In between the stimuli and the purchase, consumers now go online and do a search. 83% of moms search online for a product after seeing a TV ad. This past Black Friday, 29% of the searches came from mobile.

Therefore, we now have "4 Moments". The Zmont, "Zero Moment of Truth", is when those search queries are done. It's not just for consumer products either, but also relates back to your personal brand. If your an employer looking to hire, you will type that person's name in the "Google Machine", as Jim calls it, and see what comes up. If your making a sales call for a B2B company, you search for that company and/or the person you're meeting with.

Jim closed with saying that most of us marketers have a full "Stimuli" strategy as well as one for the first and 2nd moments. But, do we have a ZMont strategy? Something to reflect upon. Google will be launching an ebook on the subject in a couple weeks. Look for it at www.WinningTheZeroMomentofTruth.com.

The rest of the afternoon we had a choice of break-out sessions. I attended the SouthWest Airlines session by Dana Williams. Who yes, was at the conference and wasn't one of the speakers that left as soon as she was done. In fact Dana stayed throughout the day's end to the cocktail hour. Besides the issue last year when one of SouthWest's employees went mad and stormed off the plane and quit, SouthWest has been the model for how to engage customers and employees through social media. I'll be flying home later today on one of their flights, which Dana assured me they are done with cancellations for the week.

The last session of the day that I attended was with Linda Goldstein, legal counsel with Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, or better known as the Sweepstakes and Contest Diva. She quickly went through the basic legal requirements of a sweeps vs. a contest and then dove into the legalities of the newer media platforms, including mobile, Facebook and Twitter. Linda also reviewed the best practices for executing a user-generated contest and reminded us of the new FCC regulations regarding bloggers. It was a great overview for all of us and a perfect transition to the cocktail hour.

Thanks again PMA for inviting me to attend the conference. I'm heading down to breakfast now for Day 2 which will end with tonight's Reggie Gala Awards Dinner. We'll soon know who takes home the golden cash register for this year.

Amongst the email I received this morning is one from Danielle, who wrote to ask if I'd seen Jon Scieszka's Trucksgiving. While at the local library earlier today, I picked up a copy of it.

Like The Berenstain Bear's Give Thanks, Scieszka's Trucksgiving is new; the publication year is 2010. The illustrators are David Shannon, Loren Long, and David Gordon. Trucksgiving is one book in Scieszka's "Ready To Roll" series of easy readers published by Simon and Schuster.

On the back cover is the website for the series: Trucktown.com. I typed it into the search window on my computer, and WOW! Way cool. I can see lot of kids really liking the site. Truck horns blare, and Jack greets me, saying welcome. Constantly playing in the background is the low sound of a motor. Rolling my cursor over the other trucks on the page, Jack introduces each one.

If you study gender, you might want to take a look at the gender of the trucks. The pink garbage truck is "Gabriella Garbage Truck." She picks up garbage. The blue dump truck is "Dump Truck Dan." More analysis might not hold up, but some of it looks to me to be rather.... stereotypical.

The white ambulance is "Rescue Rita." There's a green wrecker (truck with a wrecker ball) named "Wrecker Rosie" (her wrecking ball is pink). There's bios for each truck, and a lot of things kids can do... listen to sounds, print out coloring pages...

Clicking on the "Parents Section" opens a "Grown Ups Section" that says the site is about fun and games, and that there is little to read on the site.

Some might say the title of the book "Trucksgiving" is clever. It reflects Scieszka's play with words. I like word play, but not in this case. The word play is at the expense of a specific population. Scieszka did that before in Me Oh Maya, one of the books in the Time Warp Trio. I've written about two other books Long illustrated. If you're interested, see what I said about his illustrations for Barack Obama's Of Thee I Sing, and, Watty Piper's The Little Engine That Could.

On the first double-paged spread of Trucksgiving, we learn that many years ago, "the first trucks came to Trucktown" (part of the spread is used on the cover). In the foreground are two trucks: Jack Truck (the star of the series) and Gabriella Garbage Truck. He's wearing a black hat with a buckle on it and she's wearing what I think is supposed to be a white bonnet. They've just come off a ship. Beside the ramp is a rock---Plymouth Rock, perhaps?

On the next double-paged spread, we see Payloader Pete and Dump Truck Dan scooping and dumping dirt. They're both wearing black hats with buckles. Turning the page, we see Cement Mixer Mike in a black hat and Grader Kat (she's described on the website as "sensitive, creative, and mature") in a bonnet. They are making roads. On the next double-paged spread we see four cabins on a scroll. Above the scroll the text reads:

They built Trucktown. And they saw that it was good.
Somehow, "they saw that it was good" reminds me of Genesis. Was that deliberate on Scieszka's part? A gesture towards the Puritan's spirituality?

On the next double-paged spread, the trucks wanted a way thank every truck that helped. On that page, the trucks are gathered around a long table that is set with plates full of nuts and bolts and oil cans. Here, for the first time, we see a truck wearing feathers. "Big Rig" is the truck chosen to be an Indian. His bio page (on the website) says:

Big Rig is a bully. He's a tailgating, horn blasting, black exhaust spewing, license expired, outlaw. And those might be the nicest things you could say about him. The best thing to do with this guy is steer clear.
Instead of round eyes like all the other trucks have, he's got rectangular ones with orange instead of white eyeballs. On the next two double-paged spreads, Big Rig glares at Lucy the fire truck when she suggests they spray water to celebrate, and, he glares at Gabriella when she suggests they smash garbage.

On the next double-paged spread, Izzy the ice cream truck suggests they eat ice cream. Next to him is another truck wearing feathers. This is Monster Truck Max. His bio (on the website) reads:

Max is everything you would expect a monster truck to be. Especially ACTIVE! He is oversized, jacked up, and nitro-boosted to the MAX! He's always getting his wild self into trouble and it's a good thing he's got friends like Jack and Dan to help him along the way.
On that page, Izzy is shown on the table. The plates of nuts and bolts are flying about. Was it Max's nitro that upset things?!

For the sake of comparison, I'm including bios for Jack Truck:

Jack is a prankster action hero! He is active, rowdy, messy, loud and goofy. He is the fastest truck and the best-at-truck-sports truck. Jack's work is to play. And he plays, and plays, and plays, and plays.
And Dump Truck Dan's bio...

Dan is Jack Truck's best friend. He is one strong truck and loves to show off that strength, whether its pushing rocks, loading up dirt, or getting into trouble with Jack.
Max doesn't have the scary appearance that Big Rig does. Max has eyes like the others (round and white). He is "wild" and perhaps it is his "wild" characteristic that led the illustrators to put feathers on him. Feathers on the bully, and feathers on the wild guy.

The story continues with Jack suggesting they have a race each year instead of the ideas posed by others. Big Rig and Max aren't shown objecting. The final page shows Rita (the ambulance) crossing the finish line, dressed as a turkey.

Overall, the book is stereotypical.

Scieszka's language play is troubling, and the story itself doesn't quite make sense to me. The trucks want to do something to say thanks to all the trucks who helped build Trucktown. The two Indian characters object to ideas put forth. Why? I'm stretching to say that maybe these two "Indian" characters are making a statement about the entire idea of Thanksgiving and how it is observed in the United States.

But, that is wishful thinking. Instead, we have two male trucks. One is a bully and the other is a wild guy. They shut down options put forth by the two female trucks.

On the website, Szieszka says that the stories are ones that reflect the ways that 4 year old kids act. Perhaps, but it still doesn't make sense to me. Have you read it? Does it work for you?

Today I'm sharing these Lemon-Blueberry Buttermilk scones with you. They're flaky, tender and bursting with bright lemon flavor and fresh, juicy blueberries. I made these last weekend for our Saturday morning breakfast and we immediately fell in love! I had originally planned on serving them with butter and honey but we ended up loving them plain! They're delicious with a hot cup of coffee and the perfect way to kick-start your day! The best part? They take no time to throw together! All you really need is less than 30-40 minutes and you've got fresh, hot scones for breakfast! You could even make the dough ahead of time and freeze it for later use. So sleep in a little tomorrow morning and start your weekend with these fast, simple, DELICIOUS scones!

Lemon-Blueberry Buttermilk Scones - heavily adapted from from Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan
Printable Recipe
1 egg
2/3 cup buttermilk
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
zest of 2 large lemons
1/2 pint fresh blueberries
5 Tbsp cold butter, cut into small cubes

1 egg beaten with 1 teaspoon water, for egg wash.
sugar, for sprinkling

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Beat egg, buttermilk and lemon zest together and set aside.

In large mixing bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together. Add the butter and using a pastry cutter, fork or your fingers, cut it into the flour until you have a pebbly mixture the size of peas.

Pour the egg and cream into the flour/butter mixture and stir to combine with a rubber spatula. Very gently, fold the blueberries into the dough, being careful not to crush them. When the mixture is totally incorporated, torn the dough out onto a floured surface and pat out until it is 1 inch thick. Using a biscuit cutter, cut out circles and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper; alternatively you can just cut the dough into squares or triangles.

Brush the tops of the scones with the egg wash, then sprinkle generously with sugar. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until the are nicely browned. Serve immediately. Store any leftovers in an airtight container.

It appears we have a new twist in the race for the final spot in the New York Mets bullpen. It appears we have a new twist in the race for the final spot in the New York Mets bullpen.

After speculation for the past few weeks about who will get the coveted 25th spot on the Mets roster between right-handers Blaine Boyer and Jason Isringhausen, the Mets are reportedly pulling out all the stops in an attempt to keep both of them.

According to David Waldstein of the New York Times, the Mets have asked Jason Isringhausen to remain in Port St. Lucie for extended spring training for a week or two in order to build more arm strength.

Isringhausen has not pitched more than 43 innings in a season since 2007, and the Mets want reassurance that his arm will be durable enough to last a full season if they bring him north.

Isringhausen had reportedly been against the idea of staying back in extended spring training but is considering the possibility. Although he was signed to a minor-league deal after a tryout, he will either retire or ask for his release if the Mets attempt to send him to Triple-A Buffalo.

The 38-year-old righty has been one of the best stories in camp, as he attempts to make a comeback from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

If Izzy accepts the Mets idea to stay back for a week or so, that means the Mets will be able to carry an extra pitcher on their active roster when they break camp and begin the regular season on April 1st.

That could very well mean that Blaine Boyer is safe, and the Mets will delay their decision on who keep for at least another week, hoping the surplus sorts itself out.

However, this story has one more M. Night Shyamalan twist.

Sources also say that the Mets have had internal discussions about asking Boyer to accept a minor-league assignment so they can stash him in the minors and open up a roster spot for Manny Acosta.

The Mets have not yet formally asked Boyer to do this, but it would be a bold move. Boyer has pitched lights out all spring, but can opt-out of his contract on Thursday and become a free agent.

If the Mets want to keep Boyer, they either have to give him the final bullpen spot or take a big risk and call Boyer's bluff that he won't opt-out and try to latch on with another team after Opening Day.

Personally, I think it would be somewhat of a heist if the Mets are able to stash Boyer in the minor leagues and keep him waiting in the wings as depth. He's pitched like a major league reliever, and I don't think it's far-fetched that he could find another team immediately.

Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog thinks that the Mets might be justified in asking Boyer to stick around.

As for Boyer, let’s be honest, he can leave, but where is he going? At this point, after weeks of camp, most teams likely have their rosters set, or at least have a plan and people in place. So, if he leaves, he’s likely walking in to the exact same situation he’s in now. At least here, with the Mets, he knows they are fans of his, and know what he’s about.

I'll say this, there's no harm in asking. I'd expect the Mets to speak with Boyer as early as Tuesday morning to discuss their plans with him.

If Boyer accepts a minor-league assignment, that would allow the Mets to hold onto right-hander Manny Acosta, who is out of options and would be exposed to waivers if he does not make the team.

I have contended all spring that Acosta would likely not make the team, and the Mets evidently do not think he'll clear waivers, otherwise they would have placed him on waivers earlier today with Nick Evans, Luis Hernandez and Pat Misch.

If Boyer does accept a minor-league assignment, and Isringhausen stays behind in extended spring training, that would allow the Mets to keep all three of them, at least for another week, as Isringhausen fine-tunes his game.

The Mets clearly like Izzy, as he would bring experience and leadership to the table. The two-time former All-Star closer has looked reborn this spring, even touching 92 mph in his last outing.

Buckle your seatbelts Mets fans, this is about to get crazy. Or at least, as crazy as a battle for the final bullpen spot on a major league baseball team could gets.

Once, there were two brothers named Sam and Izzy. Sam was the older brother and Izzy was just a baby, really, six or seven years old. Sometimes he asked Sam for advice, but usually he liked to figure things out for himself. Izzy was extremely active and always getting into scrapes with other kids in the sandbox at the playground. Sometimes it was his fault, sometimes it was their fault. Sometimes it was serious, sometimes it was just a cut. Whenever something happened to Izzy, Sam would worry.

What made it harder for Sam was that he and Izzy were half-brothers and so they lived very far apart from each other. Izzy lived with his mom’s huge family which included a lot of loud, gossiping, scheming women. Many of them were vindictive and several were in the process of a divorce from their abusive husbands, which made them angry and violent, which made Sam worry about Izzy even more. Sam lived on his own.

One day, Izzy called Sam on Skype, sobbing. One of the boys he had been playing with in the sandbox had gotten into a serious fight with him and twisted Izzy’s arm to the point of breaking it. He had to go to the hospital, where they told him that 30 bones had been fractured and one was seriously broken. But he was better now and the doctor even gave him a neon green cast and a lollipop.

Sam yelled into the computer, “How could they do this to you, those monsters? I’m going to fly over there and kill ALL of those boys! Why would they hurt you like that?” As he was yelling, he signed into Facebook and wrote in large, bold letters on his status, “CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED TO IZZY. MONSTERS ARE GOING TO BE MONSTERS. THEY’LL NEVER LEAVE HIM ALONE.” Five of his friends immediately liked the status and one person wrote a comment, “OMG, so sad about Izzy. Thoughts and prayers are with him.”

Back in the Skype chat, Izzy sucked on his lollipop and said, “Don’t worry, Sam, I’m okay now. I went to the doctor all by myself, he fixed me up, and I just wanted to share with you so you would know why I have a cast. You don’t need to come over here.”

“You need to go over there and break the arms of all those boys that hurt you,” Sam seethed. “Let me send you some money so you can buy yourself a good slingshot so that you don’t have to fight with your bare hands.”

“No, it’s okay, Sam,” Izzy said. “I don’t think I need any slingshots.”

“Those monsters will never understand unless you punish them with brute force,” said Sam.

“But you don’t really know them. You don’t live over here near the sandbox with me and you don’t really understand the way we play every day,” said Izzy, sucking on his lollipop.

“But how can I not? I read about it on your Facebook, I read the news about your aunts divorcing, and I talked to someone that just came back from your city. I know exactly what you’re going through. And seriously, just take my advice and my money. I’m really far away so I can’t do anything effective or really understand the situation, but it makes me feel better when I send money and post Facebook statuses about you.”

“I know you love me, Sam, but have you ever had a broken arm?” Izzy smiled.

“Of course I have. Just ten years ago, I broke my arm really, really bad. I will never forget that time.” Sam paused.

“I know, but that was so long ago. I don’t tell you this, but I have a broken arm almost every other month. Of course, lately, it hasn’t been as bad, and this past time took me by surprise. But I think I know how to deal better with broken arms than you by this point.” Izzy said.

“No you don’t. You’re younger, weaker, and have less experience.” Sam said.

Izzy stopped sucking on his lollipop and started getting angry. “Sam, this happens every time I tell you about something in the sandbox. First, you post a really emotional Facebook status that doesn’t solve anything. Then you try to send money to me to make it seem like you’re participating. But I can only use the money in a certain way, depending on what you feel I should spend it on. Then you say that you’re going to come over here so you can know what it’s like to live near the sandbox and protect me, but you never do! Please, when I Skype you to tell you, just commiserate with me and ask how you can help. And if you can’t, don’t go all crazy!”

“It’s true,” Sam said. “I live far away and can’t really understand the situation the way you can, so I do a lot of stupid stuff to try and relieve myself of the guilt. But tell me, Izzy, how can I really help you?”

“Just love me. You’re my brother. Just love me. Stop posting stupid Facebook statuses. Stop wasting your time arguing with people in the comment sections of newspapers that write about me. Stop trying to send me money and telling me what to use it for. Stop trying to understand how a broken arm feels. If you really want to help, come live near me. Then you’ll get it. But if you can’t come here, just relax. You’re a good brother. But you get so crazy! If I need anything, I’ll let you know,” Izzy said.

Izzy signed off Skype, took his lollipop with him, and went back to the sandbox.

Time to get our reverence on. This week, AWK welcomes long-time USWNT mainstay, faithful Tar Heel, and former Washington Freedom co-captain (and occassional goalkeeper) Cat Whitehill. This season, Cat will be tasked with helping lead a young Atlanta Beat team from the back. The commanding center-back and diehard college football fan talks about the mentality in the Beat camp at the moment, her USWNT playing days, SEC football (of course), and many other things. Enjoy! The Atlanta Beat's New Southern Belle AWK: The Atlanta Beat are having an excellent preseason so far. What’s the mentality in camp like and what do you say to those who have been so dismissive of the team? CW: We have had an excellent preseason. It has been a lot of hard work, but it will be worth it once the season starts. I think the mentality in this camp is that we will outwork our opponents and do the basic skills properly, so we can play beautiful soccer. We know that if we can put those two pieces together, then we can be a great team. As for what people are saying about us, I just think their words inspire us to work even harder and to become better soccer players. We may not have the “best” team on paper, but I am excited for everyone to see who we are as a team on the field. We are going to be a strong unit with what we are doing now, and being a “team” is going to be extremely important to us. AWK: From an on-the-field standpoint, what were some of the factors that enticed you to join the Beat this season? CW: There are a lot of things that enticed me to join the Beat. As for the on-the-field aspects, I am excited to continue learning why I am here. I had heard lots of great things about the coach James Galanis as he has coached national team players like Carli Lloyd, Heather Mitts, and Tina Ellertson and that definitely excited me. I could see the vast improvement of the team once he took over last year and I was impressed at how he brought the team together. There are a lot of new players that have come to the Beat. I had the great honor of playing with Lori Chalupny at UNC and on the national team, to gain another opportunity to play with her was very appealing to me. Again, I am still learning why I am here and so far I love it!! AWK: It seems like you’re the prohibitive leader in a young Atlanta Beat squad. Do you have a different role with the Beat than you had with the Washington Freedom? CW: Fortunately I was a co-captain with Abby Wambach on the Freedom so I learned a lot of what it takes to be a leader in the WPS. Right now Lori is the captain, so my role has changed in that aspect. But, I feel like I am still a leader on this team with my age and experience. I want to help these young women learn what it takes to be a professional on and off the field, and I want to help these young women become the best players they can be. I like my role on this team right now, and I hope to become a better person, leader, and soccer player by the end of the year. AWK: Who’s the one Beat player that’s particularly impressed you this offseason? CW: I guess I am somewhat confused by this question. Most of these players are new to me so I didn’t really know a lot about them before preseason. I just don’t have a lot to base my answer on for this. If you want improvement from last season, I guess I have been most impressed with India Trotter. She came into this preseason fit and ready to return to the player that we all know she can be. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching her play everyday and I love her new spirit and take on life. She is just refreshing to be around. AWK: How are head coach Jim Galanis’ defensive formations taking shape and where do you fit in the back line? CW: Well, he loves defense and I love that of course! We are really trying to work on many different styles of play so we can play any formation any given day. We want to be great defensive players first and once we become great at that, then our offense will start to fall into place. I am just trying to help every teammate around me become a better player. Fortunately, I have a lot of experience and I am going to try my best to use that to its fullest. AWK: You’re one of the most capped USWNT members with 134 appearances to your name. What’s your fondest memory with the USWNT? CW: I would have to say my fondest memory with the National Team was winning the gold medal in 2004. I had the amazing opportunity to be on a team with some of the greatest women soccer players of all time like Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, Bri Scurry, Joy Fawcett, and so on. We had the opportunity to and send them off on the right note. To stand on the podium is obviously an amazing honor, but to stand on the podium with women who I grew up watching was something very special to me. AWK: You slotted in for an injured Brandi Chastain during the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup and wound up playing every minute of every match in the tournament. What was that experience like? CW: Honestly, I think when I stepped in for Brandi, it was a total blur. I was so young, and I didn’t realize what was actually going on. Fortunately I was able to stay in the lineup and help the team as much as I could. I sure learned a lot on the day I filled in for her, and I am very fortunate that I had some amazing players around me who helped me the rest of the tournament. AWK: You scored 11 goals for the USWNT – quite the record for a defender. Which was your most memorable? CW: I would have to say my most memorable was when I scored two goals in the World Cup game against North Korea. I later learned that no defender has ever scored two goals in a World Cup match so that is pretty cool. My boyfriend at the time (who is now my husband), my parents, and my grandparents were all there so it was nice to be able to celebrate that with them. AWK: Did you keep tabs on the USWNT during CONCACAF Women’s World Cup qualifying this past October and what did you make of the team’s harder-than-expected journey to the World Cup? CW: I did keep tabs on the team. I still have a lot of friends on that team, and I wanted to see how they were doing. I am not going to lie, but I was definitely surprised that it was as hard as it was even though I knew the team would come through. It’s something about Americans; we know how to find a way to win. I think it’s in our blood, and I am proud of the team for staying composed and qualifying. AWK: The Beat earned a 2-0 win against the University of North Carolina in preseason last week. Did you share a word with former coach Anson Dorrance and/or with any of the North Carolina players? CW: I LOVED playing my old team. Because my husband is in medical school at UNC, I was able to train a little bit with the team, so I knew the girls and it was fun to banter back and forth with them. They did give me a hard time when Courtney Jones and I went in for a tackle and she came out with a nasty bruise. I was scared for a minute that the injury was more serious, so I was really glad to hear that it was just a bruise. As for the coaches, it was great seeing them. They are great at keeping in touch with their old players, so it was fun to see Anson, Dino and Chris. I loved being a Tar Heel and I still have a lot of pride in that blue. AWK: You were a mainstay of the Washington Freedom in both the WUSA and WPS eras. What have you made of the magicJack/Dan Borislow situation? CW: I actually didn’t play with the Freedom during the WUSA. Sadly, I just barely missed the chance to play in that league. [Ed. Note: When am I ever going to remember that!?] As for what is going on with the majicJack team, I have no idea. I try to stay out of things like that. I DO know that I am very appreciative that he took over the Freedom and the league was able come back for another year. I DO know that the GM for that team, Bri Scurry, knows what she is doing. The team is obviously going to be a great team, and I am excited to see what happens once the season begins. AWK: It’s widely known that you would like to pursue a career in broadcast once your soccer playing days are over. What would be your ideal broadcasting job? CW: Oh man, I want to work college football. Whether it be in studio like Wendi Nix or on the sideline like Erin Andrews or Tracy Wolfson, I would be in heaven. It has been a dream of mine to work college football, and I hope that someday I will be able to fulfill that dream. Either way, I just want to watch and talk about football for the rest of my life. AWK: How far will the Tar Heels get in the NCAA Basketball Tournament this year? And if they lose to Marquette in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday, will you take your aggression out in the Beat/Florida preseason game the next day? CW: Haha, I hope the Heels win it all. It would be glorious if we could win this year after the kind of year we had last year. If they were to lose, I would probably take my aggression out on the field, but not on any particular player. I would just use the adrenaline to play faster and stronger. AWK: You’re a massive college football fan and an Alabama native. Which of these three players will be picked highest in the 2011 NFL Draft: Auburn QB Cam Newton, Auburn DE Nick Fairley or Alabama DL Marcell Dareus? CW: I’ll be honest, if I were the Carolina Panthers, I would take a QB, and I would take Cam Newton. I know that he has had his issues, but the guy can play. I feel like the Panthers have drafted safe the last few years, and they tried the QB route last year that didn’t pan out too well. If they were to take a QB and take the safe route of Gabbert, I think it would be a mistake. I am not saying Gabbert isn’t good, he is just safe. The Panthers need an edge and it seems like a change could do them good. If they don’t take a QB, then Fairley will be first pick. It was the year of the Auburn Tigers, and I think the main reason for that was Mr. Fairley. AWK: As a Southern girl, how ridiculously happy are you to be moving to Atlanta? CW: I LOVE being in the South, and I love being in Atlanta. I have so much family here. My sister, cousins, aunt, uncle, and grandparents all live here. My parents are only three hours away, and my best friend is only three and a half hours away. It’s so fun to be in the area, and I hope the city of Atlanta can see how happy I am too! AWK: Do you think being a native of the South will especially endear you to Beat fans? CW: I hope so. I think it definitely doesn’t hurt. I DO know that a lot of Birmingham people will be making their way over to Atlanta to watch the games, so that will help. I watch how the hometown man for the Braves, Brian McCann, has done in Atlanta, so I hope people will respond the same way with the southern women on the Beat. AWK: Did you hear about the Alabama fan who poisoned Auburn’s trees out of spite? Apparently he named his kids Crimson Tyde and Bear Bryant and his dogs Crimson and Nicky (after head coach Nick Saban). Do your dogs bear the name of an SEC football figure? CW: Yes I did hear about that guy and it is just a terrible thing that he did. Even Alabama fans are embarrassed. Everyone knows the tradition of those trees and you never want to mess with the traditions. Win on the field, that’s most important. As for my dogs, their namesakes come from TV shows. Izzy is from Grey’s Anatomy before she went crazy and left the show, and Maeby is from Arrested Development. My kids will have normal names as well. I have pride in my Heels, but I just cheer loudly. AWK: What’s more exciting: Christmas morning or opening day of college football? CW: That’s a great question. I LOVE christmas morning. It brings back incredible memories with my family and when I was a kid and couldn’t sleep waiting for Santa to come to my house. But I LOVE opening weekend too. Robert and I have so many great memories watching football together which makes that weekend so special. It’s all about the memories and how you make of them. Christmas is more exciting, but opening day of college football is a close second! AWK:How many jokes have you heard about being a dog lover named Cat? We could share a few if you haven’t heard enough. CW: I actually haven’t heard a lot which frightens me to tell you that because now I have a feeling that I will be hearing from people after this interview. I love dogs so much, and it is a bit ironic that my name is Cat. I am just glad too many people haven’t picked up on that! AWK: With your Southern roots in mind, you recently announced on Twitter that your husband will be doing his residency in Boston. Are you prepared to deal with a new kind of accent? CW: That’s actually really funny. I have been trying my Boston accent and let me tell you, I am terrible! I have two accents and that is about it – Redneck and Southern Belle. Robert is actually pretty good about it. I just need to watch some Good Will Hunting and figure out how they don’t say their “r’s.” I am so proud of Robert for getting into such an incredible hospital, so it will be a fun new adventure for the both of us. I think that my dogs will enjoy the below freezing temps better than me, but at least I will have cute new warm coats!
