After six years of "Supernatural," we thought we'd seen it all, but when Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) killed the Mother of All in last week's episode, we were shocked. After all, if they kill the big bad in Episode 19, what is there to do in episodes 20, 21, and 22? Sit around and pat each other on the back? Unfortunately for the brothers Winchester, three episodes of celebratory air guitar wasn't in the cards. In the final scene of last week's episode, we learned that the Mother of All was the least of their worries. The angel on their shoulders, Castiel (Misha Collins), had teamed up with the King of Hell, Crowley (Mark Sheppard), who they'd presumed dead.Life's just not fair sometimes.This week's episode, "The Man Who Would Be King," was written and directed by producer Ben Edlund - it's his "Supernatural" directing debut, though he's been with the show since...

I got an e-mail from Misha Collins today.

Now, Misha is the kind of guy who connects with people (I've met him a couple of times), and who really believes in his cause, so it's possible he actually wrote the e-mail himself. It's enough that I can tell myself he did, anyway, and that makes me smile.

But that's not why the e-mail made me happy.

A while ago, I donated to Random Acts, his charitable organization. Way back last fall, actually, when he ran something like 80 miles nonstop. I got my confirmation and thank you for my donation.

And that was it.

In December, I got a gift for someone, a donation in their name through another organization. Within a day, I had another solicitation from them. Since then, I've gotten mailings every couple of weeks, as well as e-mails (until I unsubscribed). This is what usually happens when you give money somewhere, no matter how legitimate and worthy the organization. They incessantly beg you for more money, in logical and emotional language designed to make you feel guilty. And it drives. me. insane. It makes me want to never give money through them again.

In contrast, you know what Misha's letter said? Thank you. It described the organization's efforts in Haiti and Japan, and their plans for a trip down to physically get involved, and hopes for future endeavors.

And that's it. It's so refreshing, it makes me want to immediately give more money. It makes me want to boost Jason Manns' Crowdrise account and for a few brief moments I think, "Hey, I could join them on the trip!" And then I come to my senses. But in the meantime, it worked.

It's just really refreshing to be appreciated instead of guilt-tripped.

Best Coast carry enough influence from 90s California pop-punk that they would've been right at home on a late-90s Warped Tour stage. At a show in Brighton, England last night, Best Coast joined opening act Spectrals to play a sloppy spur-of-the-moment cover of Blink-182's classic coming-of-age basher "Dammit". Friday's "Supernatural" episode saw the Mother of All meet her demise, and dropped a shocking bomb on us: Castiel (Misha Collins) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) are working together. This was especially surprising given the part where we all thought we'd watched Castiel roast Crowley without blinking an eye.In this week's May 6 episode, we'll finally see some explanation for Castiel's desperate actions throughout the season. He's spent a lot of the season battling his angel brethren for control of Heaven, and that battle is about to come crashing back to earth. Executive producer Bob Singer tells Zap2it, "We always thought that a war in heaven is best told off screen, but you're going to see a lot of Castiel dealing with his problems coming up. The last run of episodes is very Castiel-heavy. There's some very interesting stuff that we're doing with him. His problem in Heaven will certainly be impacted by Sam and Dean."In...

There’s been a discussion on the blogosphere recently about women in SF, and their tendency to generally get ignored, whether by readers, awards or critics. In order to remedy this, a number of people have started discussions (see Torque Control for discussions of Justina Robson’s Natural History, Elizabeth Moon’s The Speed of Dark, and other future classics written by women), as well as lists. I’m linking to Ian Sales, who compiled two such lists: one of “mistressworks” (the female equivalent of Gollancz’s Masterworks series in the UK, which showcase classic SF but end up with a strong male dominance); the other one of works by 21st-Century women writers. (Kev McVeigh gave me a more complete list of 150 female SF writers, but it’s not online that I can find).

All in all, not a shining example of completeness from me (though, to be fair, I don’t read that much SF, and I suspect my showing on a meme of SF Masterworks would also be dismal). It’s dismaying (and it’s part of the point) that even though I’m a woman and a feminist, I’ve read so little. I’m making notes to improve on that score, by adding a lot of those books to my to-read list. How many can you bold on the list?

“Beyond Tango,” pianist Pablo Zielger’s 17-song performance, fused the sharp sexiness of tango music with the jaunty improvisation of jazz to create an enlivened and engaging musical experience at the Mondavi Center on Friday.

Zielger began performing classical music at age 14 in his hometown of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the 1960s, Zielger’s career made the leap to jazz music. Inspired by both classical and jazz compositions, as well as classic tango rhythms, Zielger formed his Quartet for New Tango in 1990.

The Mondavi Center’s 1801-seat Jackson Hall was nearly full for the performance, accommodating all ages of music lovers, from the young family to my left to the college-aged women to my right. The audience’s anticipatory chatter served as a reminder that the night’s performance was one of a just two U.S. tour stops for the performers of “Beyond Tango.”

The performance began in a bare bones fashion, with only Ziegler and fellow pianist Misha Dacić on stage to play dual-piano for opening song “Michelangelo 70.” Tall and thin, Dacić played with grace and precision, fingers tapping away at the keys like a novelist working furiously against a deadline. In contrast, Ziegler greeted the piano like an old friend, playing with warmth and fluidity.

It was as though the two pianos were having a conversation, pausing briefly to let the other chime in. As the song picked up, the performers’ notes became more desperate, cascading over each other to create a rush of emotional harmonies.

By the end of the night, the stage was full with a menagerie of instruments and musicians. Bandoneón (an accordion-like instrument used in tango music), cello, stand-up bass, two violins, viola, bassoon, flute, clarinet and classical drum kit all graced the stage as members of the Chamber Ensemble.

Pieces performed by the full Chamber Ensemble were almost too energizing for a sit-down concert. The heads of audience members were bobbing during the quick and flirtatious “Fuga y Misterio.” A guest appearance from tango dancers ready to interpret the stirring compositions into bodily movement would have been a welcome sight.

Violinst Machiko Ozawa kept the performance’s tension steady with her sharp slices of sound. She stormed through a solo during “Muchacha de Boedo,” channeling an impassioned mother delivering a sharp-tongued reproach to her children: equal parts seething and restrained. The solo was met with applause from audience members so appreciative of Ozawa’s skill they couldn’t hold their enthusiasm until the end of the piece.

When he wasn’t moving his fingers languidly over his instrument’s thick strings like the frantic legs of a daddy long-legs, bass player Pedro Giraudo was delicately waving his bow like a knife through butter to achieve a soft, airy sound.

Héctor Del Curto, the ensemble’s bandoneón player, performed with his whole body, shoulders heaving in his effort to pull the instrument’s layers into the shape of an upside-down “U.” The winding and sustained sound of the bandoneón acted as the glue for many of the night’s tunes, melding the ensemble’s disparate musical expressions into a cohesive unit.

As the stage lighting transformed into a mix of sunny orange and deep purple, Ziegler and the Chamber Ensemble performed the night’s most bittersweet piece, a song called “Nostalgias.” The low reverberation of Jisoo Ok’s cello melded with the slow weep of Girauudo’s bandoneón to conjure feelings of both hope and regret.

But the somber tone didn’t last long as the ensemble made the transition into romper “Milonga en El Viento.”

Arguably the most charming element of the night’s performance was the improvisational percussion executed by both bass and bandoneón players.

During the Chamber Quintet’s performance of “Buenos Aires Report,” Giraudo used an open hand to tap heartily on the side of his hollow instrument and, for added effect, quickly swiped a taught finger across its polished surface to produce crisp, rhythmic punctuation.

Del Curto rounded out Giraudo’s efforts with his own tinnier percussion, produced by rapping his fingertips on the bandoneón's outer shell. The impromptu percussion signaled the song’s move into a section with a quicker tempo.

Though talented stand-alone musicians, the ensemble seemed to thrive off the energy it created as a group. It was apparent that the ensemble’s members enjoy one another as more than colleagues, and their subtle on-stage interactions imbued the performance with an intimate yet inviting tone.

Ziegler and Giraudo smiled joyfully at one another during particularly lively portions of songs, the accordion and bass player riffed playfully off of one another, and Ziegler presented violinist Ozawa to the audience with the warmth of a proud father.

Though classically inspired, the performance was by no means a rigid affair, thanks in part to Ziegler’s personable addresses to the audience between pieces, during which he joked about song titles and thanked the crowd genuinely for their positive response. Rather than using some maestro-like hand signal to begin a song, Zeigler counted the ensemble off with a simple, rhythmic snap of his fingers and a quickly uttered, “one, two.”

In appreciation of the performers’ good vibes, the audience offered up some warmth of its own in the form of a standing ovation. With Zielger ushering the members to stand closer together, the Chamber Ensemble stood smiling in front of us before rewarding the crowd with a rare encore performance.

In an artist’s statement about “Beyond Tango,” Zielger wrote: ”The music is a kind of emotional portrait of me.” And after witnessing a live Pablo Ziegler performance, one can certainly see what he means.

Of course, one must have a proper hat, so I commissioned one from the famous California hatter, Misha Laneous. He threw together this lovely wabi sabi, Ikibana-inspired chapeau for me, featuring the Princess Diana rose from my garden that blossomed yesterday. Notice too, the famous Beaulieu-Flewelling jewels, which I retrieved from the family deposit box. The finest New York Herkimer and Chinese CZ diamonds money can buy. They've been in the family for years, darlings.







I did watch the Royal Wedding (recorded) and thought it was lovely. Kate is about as pretty as anyone could be, and they look very happy together.

(McCaw Hall) In the mainstream rock universe covered by Rolling Stone, there are two types of superstars. The first type: popular acts with a modicum to surfeit of artistic ambition and/or undeniable cultural import (U2, Jay-Z, the Rolling Stones). The second type: lucky friends of Jann Wenner whose popular and artistic accomplishments fall far short of the lifelong honors afforded them by Rolling Stone. Exemplars of this second type: former J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf and former John Cougar Mellencamp, both of whom Rolling Stone has forever tried to present as megastars on the level of Springsteen and Dylan, with each new Wolf/Mellencamp release earning breathless bluster from RS writers while record buyers (remember them?) yawn. This is particularly unfortunate in the case of Mellencamp, who has made some great records (Scarecrow, The Lonesome Jubilee) and deserves a good reputation unstained by corporate overstatement. Rise Against, Bad Religion, Four Year Strong

(WaMu Theater) It makes sense that Rise Against would tour with Bad Religion. In fact, Rise Against should be so fucking lucky—if it weren't for Bad Religion's angst-ridden SoCal punk (they've been at it since 1979), Rise Against never would've come into existence 20 years later. It's not like Rise Against haven't put in the work—10 years and six records compose a career of consistently blistering melodic hardcore that's as aggressive as it is politically correct (some members of the band are straight-edge, they all support PETA, and they often sing about human rights). But do they really get to headline over Bad Religion? I mean... it's Bad Religion! (Related: Get off my lawn!) MEGAN SELING

ICP Orchestra

(Seattle Art Museum) If you think Insane Clown Posse are finally going all high art on us with orchestral renditions of such classics as "Miracles" and "Halls of Illusions," you're sadly mistaken, Juggalos. The ICP Orchestra—aka the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra—are an Amsterdam-based improvisational jazz ensemble founded almost 45 years ago by drummer Han Bennink and pianist Misha Mengelberg, who have played with such luminaries as Eric Dolphy and Sonny Rollins. Bennink is one of the world's finest jazz drummers to ever syncopate time, rhythm, and space. The 10-piece group, filled out by seasoned string and brass sections, will inundate the air of Seattle Art Museum with chaotic spats and loose, swinging up-tempo arrangements that can violently shift at a moment's notice. Yes you read that title correctly, the incredible Jeff Loomis at MusikMesse 2011 at the Diezel Amps Booth, that in itself is interesting as he is an ENGL endorsee but then this is a music show it’s not like he’s not allowed to play other amps is it? I wonder if he is playing through the new Diezel Hagen?

The other interesting thing is that Jeff is obviously a Schecter Guitars endorsee with his own signature model but here he is playing a couple of Blackmachine guitars and also as a sidenote the second guitar you see Jeff playing is a new Blackmachine B7 that has been built for Periphery. Now I’m not sure if it is destined for Misha or Jake but it was mentioned on the official Periphery Facebook page, so whoever posts to that!

Update: Thanks once again to my man Jon Chang who has confirmed that Misha posted this news up on his personal Facebook page saying “my” Blackmachine!

LIT This week brings the 30th installment of the National California Book Awards. Some of the books up for awards have been written about in the Guardian during the past year, including Rebecca Solnit's Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas, Richard O. Moore's Writing the Silences, and Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes, by the 2011 Fred Cody Award for Lifetime Achievement winner Tamim Ansary. Local authors, editors, and translators among this year's nominees include Solnit, Moore, Aife Murray, Brian Teare, Damion Searls, Michael Alenyikov, John Sakkis (who has contributed to the Guardian), Kate Moses, Matthew Zapruder, Lewis Buzbee, Neelanjana Bannerjee, and Pireeni Sundaralingam.

The 2011 edition of NCBA arrives at a time when the value and resolve of independent booksellers is clear. For many years, Borders and other chain stores seemed poised to kill small businesses devoted to selling books, and in fact, chain marketing undoubtedly has had a negative impact on individual shops. But Borders recently filed for bankruptcy, while a number of unique booksellers in the Bay Area and beyond continue to survive and thrive. Thanks to the Berkeley-based Small Press Distribution and San Francisco shops such as Needles & Pens, small publishing is also alive and within real-life reach. LIT This week brings the 30th installment of the National California Book Awards. Some of the books up for awards have been written about in the Guardian during the past year, including Rebecca Solnit's Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas, Richard O. Moore's Writing the Silences, and Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes, by the 2011 Fred Cody Award for Lifetime Achievement winner Tamim Ansary. Local authors, editors, and translators among this year's nominees include Solnit, Moore, Aife Murray, Brian Teare, Damion Searls, Michael Alenyikov, John Sakkis (who has contributed to the Guardian), Kate Moses, Matthew Zapruder, Lewis Buzbee, Neelanjana Bannerjee, and Pireeni Sundaralingam.

The 2011 edition of NCBA arrives at a time when the value and resolve of independent booksellers is clear. For many years, Borders and other chain stores seemed poised to kill small businesses devoted to selling books, and in fact, chain marketing undoubtedly has had a negative impact on individual shops. But Borders recently filed for bankruptcy, while a number of unique booksellers in the Bay Area and beyond continue to survive and thrive. Thanks to the Berkeley-based Small Press Distribution and San Francisco shops such as Needles & Pens, small publishing is also alive and within real-life reach. Unfortunately sans Misha who was feeling ill, the ICP (Instant Composer's Pool) bring a little craziness to the house... here again under the auspices of Tom Kohn & Bop Arts in the Physikos space @ Village Gate.

All this hoo-ha about mixing and churning out records might be one of the reasons it's so hard to be enthused by, and invested in, this year's crop of would-be stars on "American Idol," writes Times arts critic Misha Berson.

 

On Saturday, April 2 at the Humana Festival for New American Plays it was announced that Bill Cain would be a repeat winner of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award for his play Nine Circles. The award comes with a $25,000 prize. This is the first time a playwright has ever won in consecutive years. Kathryn Grant (The Good Counselor) and David Bar Katz (The History of Invulnerability) were also nominated for the award, and received Steinberg/ATCA citations and $7,500 each.

April 2, 2011 — The American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) has named Bill Cain’s “Nine Circles,” a harrowing play about war and redemption, the winner of the $25,000 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award for 2011. The award recognizes playwrights for the best scripts that premiere professionally outside New York City during the previous calendar year, and is the largest annual monetary prize for an American play.

Kathryn Grant’s “The Good Counselor” and David Bar Katz’s “The History of Invulnerability” received Steinberg/ATCA citations and $7,500 each. Both Grant and Katz are first-time winners, but Cain won the Steinberg/ATCA Award last year for “Equivocation” – the first consecutive wins ever, although other playwrights (Jane Martin, August Wilson, Lee Blessing) have won it (or its predecessor award) more than once.

Checks and commemorative plaques were presented to Cain, Katz and Grant on April 2 at Actors Theatre of Louisville during the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

The award was created by ATCA in 1977 to honor new plays premiered at theaters outside New York City; no play is eligible if it has gone on to a New York production within the award year. Since 2000, it has been generously funded by The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, making the $40,000 Steinberg/ATCA the largest national new play award of its kind.

“The long-standing partnership between the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust and the American Theatre Critics Association has recognized some of today’s greatest writers, and helped identify the great playwrights of tomorrow,” said trustee Jim Steinberg. “We’re delighted to help support the unique telling of tales on the American stage.”

Cain’s drama follows the descent into a very recognizable hell by a young American soldier accused of an atrocity in Iraq. His journey through the bureaucratic and social maze mirrors Dante’s vision of an arduous odyssey to find redemptive self-knowledge. The play premiered Oct. 14, 2010 at the Marin Theatre Company. Cain is also an award-winning television writer and producer. He was founder and artistic director of the Boston Shakespeare Company where he directed most of the works in the Shakespeare canon.

Kathryn Grant’s “The Good Counselor” questions the definition of a good mother. It centers on an African-American lawyer defending a young white racist charged with murdering her three-week old baby. His investigation forces him to re-examine his own mother’s choice to favor him and abandon his younger brother. The work premiered July 15 at the professional Premiere Stages based at Kean University in Union, New Jersey.

David Bar Katz’ “The History Of Invulnerability” uses the life of Jerry Siegel, the co-creator of Superman, to explore the roots of art and how it relates to the real world. It contends that the nebbishy Siegel evolved Superman as a fantasy to counteract his guilt and impotence over the horror of the Holocaust half a world away. It premiered April 3 at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.

Twenty-seven scripts were nominated by ATCA members, and the winners were chosen by a committee led by Wm. F. Hirschman of the South Florida Theater Review. “Despite vanishing government support and faltering donations, America’s regional theaters have persevered and prevailed as this country’s preeminent crucible for vibrant and important new works,” said Hirschman. “The recommended plays encompass a dizzyingly wide range of styles and themes, produced by a cadre of experienced and novice playwrights who are inarguable proof that theater remains a vital and relevant art form in the 21st century.”

Playwrights honored since 1977 have included Lanford Wilson, Marsha Norman, August Wilson, Jane Martin, Arthur Miller, Mac Wellman, Adrienne Kennedy, Donald Margulies, Lynn Nottage, Horton Foote and Craig Lucas. The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust was created in 1986 by Harold Steinberg on behalf of himself and his late wife. Pursuing its primary mission to support the American theater, it has provided millions of dollars to support new productions of American plays and educational programs for those who may not ordinarily experience live theater.

ATCA was founded in 1974 and works to raise critical standards and public awareness of critics’ functions and responsibilities and to recognize excellence in the American theater. The only national association of professional theater critics, with several hundred members working for newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations and websites, ATCA is the U.S. national section of the International Association of Theatre Critics, a UNESCO-affiliated organization that sponsors seminars and congresses worldwide.

ATCA also presents the M. Elizabeth Osborn Award, honoring emerging playwrights. The honor was given this year at the Humana Festival to Cori Thomas and her play “When January Feels Like Summer”  (see separate press release previously posted).

In addition, ATCA administers the $10,000 Francesca Primus Prize, funded by the Francesca Ronnie Primus Foundation, honoring outstanding contributions to the American theater by a female artist who has not yet achieved national prominence. Annually ATCA makes a recommendation for the Regional Theater Tony Award, presented by the American Theatre Wing/Broadway League, and its members vote on inductions into the Theater Hall of Fame. The eight-month-old cub faced an uncertain future after being orphaned in Georgian wilderness when his mother was killed.

The first-ever sanctioned mixed martial arts (MMA) event in Ontario, Canada, took place last night (April 2, 2011) at the Casino Rama in Orillia.

In the main event of the evening, UFC veteran and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum, Josh Burkman, looked to string together his fourth straight victory, taking on the up-and-coming 21-year-old Lethbridge product, Jordan Mein.

It didn't happen.

"Young Guns" -- who recently notched an impressive finish over another well-known former Zuffa employee, Joe Riggs -- stuffed numerous takedowns and boxed up "The Peoples Warrior" for three rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory. 

In the co-featured fight of the night, Canadian Chris Horodecki -- who was recently cut by the WEC following a submission loss to Donald Cerrone at WEC 53 -- made quick work of David Castillo, submitting the Jeremy Horn-trained fighter with a rear naked choke moments into their 155-pound bout.
