British carmaker Jaguar has confirmed this week that its ultra-green C-X75 supercar concept is bound for production, albeit in extremely limited numbers. Revealed at last year's Paris Auto Show, the C -X75 'range-extended electric vehicle' has been the subject of production rumours for some time. Reports last year suggested that Jaguar had been considering a run of 1000 or 2000 units, but the company has settled on just 250 examples - at a price of around AU$1.4 million each.

Delay is natural to a writer. He is like a surfer—he bides his time, waits for the perfect wave on which to ride in. Delay is instinctive with him. Me, I tend to walk in circles, like a predator circling its prey, or a burglar casing a building. The metaphors and the methods differ, but the purpose is the same: it is not procrastination, but rather preparation. Each of us has his or her own little rituals and techniques to concentrate the mind.

You can say one thing about Chateau nightclub at Paris, it's found its mudpile niche and its reveling in it.

After winning with Charlie Sheen last weekend (or maybe not as much as they'd hoped), Chateau is back at it again as it hosts a 21st birthday party for Levi Johnston tonight. Because he was available. And, so was Chateau.

Tomorrow, they'll at least get relevant when Ke$ha hosts her "official 'get sleazy' after party." We think we'll pass, tho, and just get sleazy with Ben Folds instead.

As Woody Allen prepares to arrive in Cannes with his latest film Midnight in Paris, he is confirming some casting reports about his next film, to be shot in Rome, which he calls "a comic picture, an out-and-out comedy." Speaking to USA Today [1] he offered that quote, said that reports pegging the film's title as The Wrong Picture were, uh, wrong, and confirming that he would indeed appear in the film. And he also confirmed Deadline [2]'s report that Roberto Benigni would play a part in the movie. We don't know what that part will be, but he'll join Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin. Roberto Benigni built a big European audience with comic roles in Italy and a small US audience thanks to appearances in films like Down By Law. But he broke into the mainstream in a big way with comic Holocaust film Life is Beautiful, earning a spot in Oscar highlight reels for decades to come with his seat-climbing antics after winning Best Actor for that movie, which also took home Best Foreign Language Film. But he followed that 1997 film with Pinocchio in 2002, which almost no one saw, and The Tiger and the Snow in 2005, which no one saw at all. So this Woody Allen comedy will essentially be his return to the screen after many years, as far as many audiences are concerned. He is a presence that tends to divide audiences -- I got used to him early on thanks to a deep love for Down By Law (much of his dialogue [3], especially his explanation of why he's jailed [4], still makes me laugh) but I can see why he irritates many. But he might be ideal for a Rome-set comedy, especially with Woody Allen at the helm. When I was little, my mother and I had a nighttime ritual. After my bath, when I was zipped into my pink footie pajamas, she'd sit on the bed and read to me. Mom's voice wrapped me up in fairy tales about princesses beset by trolls, a monkey named George and the adventures of Madeline who resided in an "old house in Paris that was covered in vines."

Later, when I learned how to read, the roles reversed and I reveled in reading aloud to my mother at night. If I was lucky, she'd fall asleep and I could stay up way past my bedtime and find out if Winnie-the-Pooh caught a Heffalump or if Charlotte ever did finish that web.

As I grew older, my attempts to gain more reading time grew more sophisticated. I snuck one of my dad's big flashlights from the garage and would burrow under my blankets and read well into the night. It was quite the thrill knowing that my mother, whom I considered to be the smartest person I knew, had absolutely no clue what I was up to.

We were readers, my mother and I. We still are. Mom was a first-grade teacher, so there was always an ample supply of Dr. Seuss in the house. Plus, I had a personal stash of Little Golden books. However, our main supplier of stories was the public library.

My mother took me every couple of weeks, sometimes more. She'd recommend books that she loved when she was my age, like "Eddie's Pay Dirt," "A Little Princess" and later, "Pride and Prejudice." I can still recall her saying, "Didn't you just despise Mr. Darcy at first?" Then we launched into a discussion of English manners and morality.

The Toy Sun district of Canton, China, was a world away from Jane Austen's genteel English countryside. It was there that my mother's mother grew up in a shack with a dirt floor. Very few people, especially girls, could read or write. Books were for the privileged, not the poor. My grandmother's marriage had been arranged when she was an infant, and Grandma wed when she was a teenager. Later, she followed her new husband to the United States.

One of American's greatest gifts to immigrants is the public library. The library doesn't care if you are rich or poor -- everyone has access to books. My grandmother made sure that her children knew this. The library was heaven to Mom and she devoured every book and magazine in the children's department.

One Christmas, my mother received her most beloved gift. Under the tree, Grandma had placed a brand new book that was hers to keep -- not one that had to be returned after two weeks. Every night, Mom would stay up past her bedtime reading Johanna Spyri's "Heidi" over and over again until the pages grew ragged and the binding fell apart.

"I miss my mother," Mom said the other day. Grandma passed away 18 years ago. "She would have been so proud to know you're an author." A few years ago, my first novel for young people was published. "Millicent Min, Girl Genius" is about a book-smart 11-year old. The dedication reads, "To my mother, the smartest girl I know."

I'm a mom now. When my children were young, I read to them every night before bed. It is one of the fondest memories I have of their childhood. My daughter is away at her first year of college where she is studying writing. When she moved, she was told to only take what was essential. So she filled her suitcases with books.

My son is still at home. He sleeps with a flashlight under the covers and thinks that I'm unaware that he's staying up late to read. But I know his tricks, just as my mother knew that I snuck books under the covers, and just as her mother knew that she did, too.

Every Mother's Day, I give my mom flowers and a book. This year, I think that instead of flowers, I'll give her a flashlight ... and a brand new copy of "Heidi."

Think fruit or wine, not sugared almonds

Pink is not a colour. It is an industry and a cultural symbol. Pink stands for a particular definition of femininity, one of arrested development, where princesses represent the pinnacle of ambition and parties are about wearing cumbersome dresses rather than having fun. It's a lot like footbinding, except you buy it in Toys R Us.

This phenomenon is annoying because it means that these days a grown woman in pink has about her something of the Katie Price.

Annoyingly, I like pink. It's a really pretty colour; and besides, I look ill in orange and yellow. For this reason, I am keen to champion fashion's current bid to reclaim pink for the centre ground. At Paris Fashion Week, I bought a pair of pink Zara trousers, the exact pink of a kir royale with which I am now obsessed, and I am far from alone: the pink trouser has been the LBD of spring 2011.

The pink trouser trend was a game-changer. By taking the tailored trouser – which is a bit androgynous and rather modern – and colouring it pink, the sugar of the shade was adjusted to suit a more grown-up palate. So much so that pink dresses are back on the style radar.

How to wear a pink dress without looking as if you are chasing some ghastly, age-inappropriate notion of cuteness? Avoid the Barbie zone of the spectrum. A peachy pink such as this is much more grown up (indeed, detractors might feel it verges on Queen Mother territory). A deep, rich kir royale pink is a good alternative. Think fruit or wine, not sugared almonds, and avoid the shades that set your teeth on edge.

'A typical Parisian weekend would begin with eggs Florentine and pink champagne'

I approach dressing myself like dressing the characters in my plays. One day I'll be Louise Brooks in Pandora's Box, then a creature from an Angela Carter story, then Woolf's Orlando. These trousers are my favourites. They're by Vivienne Westwood and remind me of Rupert Bear. My dear friend and neighbour Florence, who is 89, always enjoys my outfits. When I visit her, she takes tea in a beautiful kimono from the 1920s, and tells me stories about her four husbands.

I used to live in a garret in Paris at the top a of a glorious Haussmann building. I was studying at Lecoq Theatre School. When I arrived at the garret, there was nothing except an ominous pair of earplugs. I soon realised why; the room next to mine was shared by a man, his wife and his lover, and they used to have unbelievable arguments every night.

A relaxing Parisian weekend would begin with eggs Florentine and pink champagne for breakfast in the Marais, followed by a trip to my favourite flea market, Porte de Montreuil. I'd have lunch at the Hôtel du Nord on Canal St Martin, made famous by Carne's beautiful film of the same title.

Paris was filled with adventure. I once ended up running around stark naked in the garden under Sacré Coeur in the moonlight, and for a while I worked as a magician's assistant. The magician approached me while I was in Café de Flore. It was rather a problematic job in the end. The rabbits he used for tricks kept dying.
