There haven’t been very many new retail game releases, so you should have plenty of spare change after holiday shopping, right? Good. Sega wants it. Not only that, but it is fully prepared to sink to underhanded means to get it. That is, if you consider a massive iTunes, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade sale underhanded. Yes, from December 21, 2010 until January 3, 2011 the Sega Mega Holiday Sale 2010 is on and you can stock up on gaming goodness. Or send some downloadable games to friends as gifts. It’s your choice really.

What I found most interesting was a little blurb on the Sega America Blog directed towards Xbox Live Arcade buyers. It hints that people who buy for friends will get a gift from Santa on December 30, 2010. How vague. A more blatant clue is given later under the section of the blog entry discussing the Xbox Live Arcade deals. Apparently a few games games will experience a price drop that day.

This week’s downloadable PlayStation 3 game is Dead Space Ignition for $4.99. In this prequel to Dead Space 2, players follow the story of an engineer named Franco Delille and his partner Sarah Andarsyn who find themselves stranded when the Necromorph outbreak occurs and must make their way across the Sprawl to multiple locations to hack into the system and escape. This game is actually a graphic novel that tells the story of the events that take place before Dead Space 2 but players do get a chance to help Franco hack into the computer through mini-games to try and contain the virus from spreading further in the ship. The game has four unique endings to the story that can change based on the puzzles solved. There are three different hacking puzzles to solve—Hardware Crack, System Override and Trace Route. In Hardware Crack, players must align projectors and reflectors to bounce lasers to complete circuits on a grid to crack through the broken control panels. System Override is similar to a tower-defense game except players are on attacking not defending. Trace Route is a race to the central computer core. As added bonus, players who complete Dead Space Ignition will be rewarded with unlockable items for Dead Space 2 which includes exclusive hacker suit and matching weapon skins for the main character Isaac Clarke. This week’s PlayStation Portable Download is NBA 2K11 for $19.99. NBA fans will want to grab this game, because Michael Jordan makes a debut appearance in NBA 2K11. Now players can follow Jordan’s career by completing the Jordan’s Challenge mode and play his most memorable games to unlock other challenges. Or play the game using classic teams in exhibition or association mode complete with classical looking stadiums to name a few. Check out NBA 2K11:

3D-enabled hyperrealistic racer, sci-fi shooter join God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Little Big Planet 2, and a PlayStation Move smorgasbord at Japan's biggest gaming expo.

With the 2010 Tokyo Game Show just two weeks away, the major game publishers are starting to tout which titles they will be showing off at the massive expo. More than 180,000 people are expected to turn up at the Makahuri Messe just outside Japan's largest city, and one company--Sony--is intent on displaying its latest and (it hopes) greatest game releases to the throngs of attendees.

TGS attendees will be able to get behind Gran Turismo 5's steering wheel.

Front and center will be the PlayStation Move, Sony's camera and LED-controller-based motion control system. There will be nearly 20 playable Move-compatible games on the show floor, including Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition, and Little Big Planet 2.

Two Move titles, Killzone 3 and Power Smash 4, will also be playable with 3D graphics. As shown at Sony's press briefing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony is aggressively pushing its 3D titles, including the Sly Cooper Collection, MotorStorm 3, and the long, long, long-awaited Gran Turismo 5--due out worldwide November 2.

Last but not least, Sony will be displaying its latest wares for the PSP, which has seen its sales fall to quintuple digits in the US. Leading the charge will be Sony's God of War: Ghost of Sparta, along with Konami's Winning Eleven Soccer 2011 and Sega's PSP Yakuza game, tentatively titled Yakuza Panther Shin Akira.

A full list of games appearing on Sony's platforms at the Tokyo Game Show is below, and GameSpot will be on hand at the event, which runs from September 16 to 19.

Sony has big plans for the 2010 Tokyo Game Show. And it’s no wonder, really. The company has to show off the PS3, PSP, the PS3 Move ad the 3D PS3 games. It needs a lot of space. Plus, just like at E3 2010, the Sony booth will not only be home to games Sony is publishing, but other big-name PS3 and PSP games the company wants attendees to see.

So, to make things easier, Sony’s announced some of it’s plans for the booth and games that will be there. That way, people won’t have to search around and discover for themselves what’s happening at TGS 2010. After all, it only runs from September 16-19, 2010, and time is precious when so many games are on display. To make things even easier, Sony’s booth will have five different zones, each specializing in a certain area. So if you stop by, be sure to visit the PS3, PSP, PS3 Move, PS3 3D and the PS3 3D and Move zones.

Now, on to the games! Here are the Sony titles that attendees will be able to play at its TGS 2010 booth:

Like all other major companies appearing at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony has created a website for the event. It’s incredibly lackluster and not all that informative though. I’m sure this will change once the TGS 2010 begins, but for now all you see when you go there is a brief introduction, dates for the event, a booth layout and links to other PlayStation.com website sections.

Primary 1 is Joe Flory, a British synthpop producer who has been remixed by Memory Tapes and Joker, released a single on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound label, collaborated with the Cardigans' Nina Persson and Phoenix/Rapture producer Philippe Zdar, and is touring with Brit starlet Ellie Goulding. Unlike most up-and-coming underground electronic producers, Flory has an honest-to-god major label deal. He's currently working on his debut album for Atlantic Records.

Flory recently talked to Pitchfork about Arthur Russell, cassette art, and the challenges of existing in the major label universe.

Pitchfork: Where does the name Primary 1 come from?

JF: It started out completely on my own. I wasn't even playing the music to anyone. For at least three or four years, it was just me making things for me to walk around and listen to. So I guess it just means on your own.

Pitchfork: On your blog, you recently wrote that Arthur Russell's "That's Us/Wild Combination" is the song that made you want to make music.

Joe Flory: Yeah, it's definitely one of them. I think it's just all the different things that he does; he can do so many different styles. I was always really inspired by it.

Pitchfork: What are some of the other tracks that made you want to make music?

JF: I was really into this guy Kim Hiorthøy. He's a Norwegian electronica artist, and he's got an album called Melke, which is really brilliant homemade electronic stuff, and it's very personal. And there's a track called "Doktor Watson-Trikset"; that was one of my favorites. It's got these weird horns that are treated in a really beautiful way. I play a trumpet, but then I'll record it in a way so it sounds like it's a sample. I used to play trumpet in bands when I was a kid, but I never really started recording it until I found a way to make it sound more like a sample or like an old record or something.

Pitchfork: The cover art for Mess Detective is really great. Those are all made-up tapes, right?

JF: Yeah. This guy Hollis Brown Thornton did that. It was really great. It's really cool on the back. There's a photo of the original tapes that he made. He basically made those tapes in the style of all these tapes I had when I was a kid, like Guns N' Roses and Right Said Fred and Michael Jackson and all this kind of stuff. So he actually physically made them and then illustrated from that picture.

Pitchfork: On your MySpace, you've got a couple of tracks with the dance producer Riton, and they're a lot more direct than the stuff on Mess Detective.

JF: Yeah, they're much more recent. We wanted to write really simple tracks based around dancier stuff, whereas my stuff on my own is influenced by dance, but not something you would play in a club or anything like that. It's just for my own personal listening. When I'm on my own, I tend to do much hazier-sounding things.

Pitchfork: So when your album comes out, will it be more in a hazier sort of vein?

JF: Yeah. It's like Mess Detective, but a bit further on and more developed. A lot of songs on Mess Detective are two-minute things, and they're great like that. I don't think they would be better by being developed into longer songs. I used to do it until I got bored of it, and then move onto the next thing. But what's been really fun and really challenging about doing an album is it's now about writing songs with a beginning, a middle and an end, that isn't just an atmosphere. Now I'm doing a live show, so I want to make the songs work in a band situation.

Pitchfork: You're on Atlantic Records, right?

JF: Yeah, the new record I've got is coming out on Atlantic. That's what's different for this new one. It's not going to be free on the Internet. It's going to be big-- a proper "try and get a band together and go tour it" thing. So it's totally different.

Pitchfork: There's been this kind of hazy bedroom quality to a lot of your stuff. How does it feel to make music like that and exist in a major label environment? Does it seem weird?

JF: Yeah, it's been really, really difficult, but it's also made me a hell of a lot better at music. Making that music in that way wasn't necessarily a deliberate thing; that was what I could do, and that was the best I could do, I think. A lot of those tracks, if you did try and reproduce them or do them in a big studio, would never get any better. But what we're developing now is seeing what I can do with more material, more things available for me to use. So it's not just ideas, but it's following through with the whole idea and making a full record. Working with other people has been the most interesting thing. I never thought that I would ever work with anyone else, but I've really enjoyed working with different people, different producers and musicians. It's been really good.

Namco Bandai's God Eater for the PSP is off to a good start in Japan, giving 295,000 PlayStation Portable owners another taste of Monster Hunter-like hack and slash action.

God Eater's number one debut pushes last week's software winner, Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi for the Nintendo DS to second place, beating out the PlayStation 3 port of Star Ocean 4. That leaves long-legged bestsellers New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Tomodachi Collection settling for lower spots on the chart, but both titles are still selling like the Japanese equivalent of hotcakes.

This week's new debuts, Pop 'n Music Portable and Kunio-kun Nekketsu! Daiundoukai, didn't make much of a stir, but they've got some decent competition. For Media Create's top 30 games for the week of February 1 to 7, read on.

Media Create Weekly Software Sales [Gamespot Japan]

It was a big, big week for the role-playing game in Japan, with the release—and immediate success—of Dragon Quest VI for the Nintendo DS and, to a lesser degree, Sega's latest effort End of Eternity.

Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi debuted to more than 900,000 copies sold in Japan this week, according to Media Create. Its nearest competitor was Sega's aforementioned futuristic RPG End of Eternity (known as Resonance of Fate around these parts) with more than 145,000 copies sold across the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Ar tonelico III: Sekai Shuuen no Hikigane wa Shoujo no Uta ga Hajiku also repped the RPG genre, debuting in the top ten with 82,000 units sold.

The PlayStation 3 was thrice represented in Media Create's top ten by Zipper Interactive's MAG, adding another 19,000 players to the war.

Media Create Weekly Software Sales [Gpara]

After giving up the first place spot to Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep for a couple weeks, Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii returns to the top of the weekly Media Create sales charts.

It was still a pretty good week for PSP software, however, with Sega's Valkyria Chronicles debuting in second place with 94,000 copies sold, followed by Namco Bandai's Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's Portable: The Battle of Aces. Kingdom Hearts and Monster Hunter helped the PlayStation Portable snag four of the top ten spots, the rest occupied by Wii and DS software.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 debut, by the way, was better than that of its PlayStation 3 predecessor. While the Japanese install base for each PlayStation platform was markedly different for each game's release, I wouldn't be surprised to see future Valkyria games sticking to a handheld platform.

Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep managed to maintain its bestselling status in Japan this week, fending off the triple platinum seller New Super Mario Bros. Wii in it second week.

The newest Kingdom Hearts for the PSP didn't have much in the way of competition, with the exception of top ten debuts Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles for the Wii, Tekken 6 for the PSP and Last Window: Mayonaka no Yakusoku for the Nintendo DS.

A handful of games already released in the West managed to secure top thirty spots on Media Create's weekly sales chart. The Japanese debut of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising can be spotted on this week's chart.

The latest Kingdom Hearts game—this one for the PSP—sold 446,000 more UMDs to Japanese gamers, the week's only new release to make Media Create's top thirty software sales chart. New Super Mario Bros. Wii was well behind Square Enix's newest crossover RPG, another 159,000 copies sold.

The rest of the top ten should be familiar, with Tomodachi Collection, Wii Fit Plus and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks rounding out the first five spots. Square's other game, Final Fantasy XIII moved another 42,000 during the slow week of January 4 to 10, pushing it ever closer to the 2 million mark.

Media Create Weekly Software Sales [Gpara]

Iconic plumber's latest outing sells 268k; Wii and DS dominate software charts, combining for 8 of top 10 best-sellers.

Earlier this week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Japanese media that the Wii had recovered from its momentum-sapping malaise, crediting a stronger software lineup for jumpstarting the system's sales. The current star of that lineup is unquestionably New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which rang in the New Year atop the Japanese sales charts.

According to Media Create's weekly Japanese sales figures, New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 268,212 copies from December 28, 2009 through January 3, 2010. The four-player side-scrolling platformer handily beat out Nintendo's resident Tamodachi Collection for the DS, which came in second with 185,502 copies sold. Rounding out the medal podium was another Nintendo effort, as 126,303 gamers were "all aboard" for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on the DS.

Games for Nintendo systems dominated the charts for the week, taking eight of the top 10 spots. Only a pair of role-playing games were able to break into the charts, with Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 landing in fourth with 111,705 sold, and Sega's Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP slipping into ninth place with 44,344 sold.

Things were a little more competitive on the hardware side. The Wii was the best-selling system of the week, as Nintendo's console added another 163,855 to its installed user base. The PSP and PS3 took second and third on the hardware charts, selling 132,911 and 114,368, respectively. The DS line of systems accounted for the next three spots on the charts, with the DSi notching another 92,461 sales, the DSi XL claiming another 70,643 users, and the legacy DS Lite selling to 17,388 presumably camera-shy gamers. The PSP Go continued to struggle, selling just 3,903 systems for the week.

It's a week of no new releases charting in Japan, another week for New Super Mario Bros. Wii to dominate the competition with another quarter million plus sold. What other Nintendo games are selling like gangbusters in Japan this week?

The rest of the chart that isn't New Super Mario Bros. Wii looks like familiar stuff — Tomodachi Collection, Final Fantasy XIII, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Wii Fit Plus, et al. On a more exciting note, it looks like FFXIII will cross the 2 million sold mark in Japan before January ends, New Super Mario Bros. Wii passing 3 million, probably within the next five to ten minutes.

And look! It's the return of Animal Crossing DS and Wii Play to the top thirty bestselling games in Japan, according to Media Create! Those are some legs...

Anyway, here's the games that Japan snapped up for the week of December 28 to January 3.

Media Create Weekly Software Sales [Gpara]

After a debut week as impressive as an Odin summon, Final Fantasy XIII's second week on the market in Japan shows that Lightning's sales legs that aren't quite as impressive as Mario's.

Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii returns to software sales chart dominance after a week off, moving another half-million copies in Japan. The Wii game beats out Link's newest adventure, giving The Legend of Zelda: Spirits Tracks a second place debut appearance on the charts with 291,000 copies sold. Nintendo also took third, with the astoundingly popular Tomodachi Collection.

That leaves Final Fantasy XIII in fourth place, moving another 189,000 copies this week, according to Media Create.

The rest of the top ten is all Nintendo—and Namco Bandai—with DS and Wii games outselling everything else in Japan. The numbers, after this.

Gaming Angel's founder Trina Schwimmer's list of women in games includes ten people who have helped change the game industry from the inside. While it's not all inclusive, it is a very sound list.

This is the time of the year where most sites are doing their top ten lists about different subjects. Personally, I hate top ten lists. If I'm going to do one, then it's going to be about something I'm passionate about. Therefore, we have two top ten list articles on GamingAngels.com. Here we are looking at the ten women that influenced the gaming industry in a big way over the last ten years. This isn't an all-inclusive list and I'd love for you to join in the conversation by including your nominees in the comments. The game industry is starting to see change and some of it is due to the women on this list paving the path. Here in random order, are ten women that really changed the game industry over the last ten years.

Lucy Bradshaw has to start the list with her work on the Sims beginning in the year 2000. Lucy and the Maxis team created a game that would be named the best selling PC game to date. The Sims is also credited for bringing more women into playing games. Lucy Bradshaw now leads the efforts of the Maxis team on the various Spore titles. She is an amazing speaker and is always pushing the industry forward.

Kim Swift took the game industry by storm with the much praised hit, Portal. Swift was hired by Valve after graduation and won many awards with a title that appealed to casual and the hardcore. Swift has now joined Airtight Games to assist with games aimed at a more diverse audience.
Jade Raymond was the producer on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed. While she had been a producer on previous titles including The Sims Online, Jade definitely had to put up with controversy from men that couldn't get over her looks. Yes guys, it is possible to be gorgeous and talented.
Corrinne Yu is an amazing woman. She's the principal programmer at Microsoft's Halo team. I met her at a GDC Women in Games luncheon where she was rewarded for her work on the Halo series. She dresses like a rock star and talks about programming theory unlike anyone I know. Corrinne is an inspiration as we look at the problem of not enough women going into programming as a discipline.
Megan Gaiser is the President and CEO of Her Interactive. Through her work at Her Interactive, she has helped make intelligent games for the younger female audience. Her Interactive games create the Nancy Drew series of games that are very popular. Megan works hard in both talks and through her work at Her Interactive to get more girls interested in gaming both as a hobby and as a career.
Kellee Santiago is an amazing young woman from the Interactive Media program at USC. She is the president and co-founder of ThatGameCompany, a company that strives to create games that create an emotion in the player. Their first two games, flOw and Flower on the Playstation 3 are not only beautiful but also appeal to a more diverse audience. During our interview with her at the Spike VGAs, it was great to see her passionate and excited about the future of ThatGameCompany. We look forward to Kellee pushing the boundaries of what we think about games.
Amy Hennig works as Naughty Dog as the Creative Director on Uncharted and Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 is second in the top 20 ranked Playstation 3 games on Metacritic. Amy concentrates on story and actors and it shows. Uncharted 2 has some of the best voice acting of any game out there. It will be interesting to see how close to films that Amy and the Naughty Dog team can take video games.
Deborah Mars is the Managing Producer at SCEA Santa Monica Studio who worked on PSN title, Fat Princess. The title had early uproar from various websites because the game was built around the mechanic of feeding your princess cake so she would weigh more and be harder to kidnap. In the end, Deborah and her team proved that Fat Princess is an incredibly fun title.
Cammie Dunaway is the executive vice president of sales & marketing at Nintendo. As one of the most powerful people at Nintendo, she led the way to reach out to women gamers with the Nintendo DS and Wii. She has had a rough road being criticized for being too nice or even fake. I interviewed Cammie at the 2007 Women's Conference and she was sweet but also very knowledgeable about the products available. She genuinely wants to see a more diverse audience enjoy gaming.
We end our list with a female that has taken community on the Xbox 360 to another level. Christa Phillips Charter, better known as Trixie360, was responsible for many community initiatives for the 360 that is what makes us feel at home on the 360. She organized Game with Fame nights, Community Spotlights, Gamer Spotlights, and created/founded GamerChix a place where female Xbox gamers can gather to talk about gaming. Christa has always made herself available to gamers. Her new title is Social Media Lead of Xbox LIVE and we can't see where she takes Community and Games next!

Do I need to get my eyes checked? Did Final Fantasy XIII, one of the most advertised, hyped games of the past four years, just get outsold by New Super Mario Bros Wii, LoZ: The Spirit Tracks, and that God damned "Miis make friends on the DS" game in only it's second week of release in Japan?

That's nuts.

Now, I know that Final Fantasy games aren't known for their long legs, but to see the mega-budgeted, mega-advertised game get outsold so quickly by three games that likely cost one tenth of what Final Fantasy XIII cost to produce just confuses me. All this time, I secretly thought that the PS3 and Final Fantasy XIII would end up conquering all of Japan, and they defintiely did... for a week. To see the game almost get outsold by a months old Pokemon remake teaches me how little I understand about Japan.

Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIII last week, a release that, in its first four days, sold more than 1.5 million copies. But how did the competition fare with the Final Fantasy sales juggernaut vying for Japanese gamer's yen?

Quite well, especially if you consider the competition to be New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which has sold another 568,000 copies, just a hop, skip and jump away from crossing the two million mark in Japan. And speaking of selling two million copies of something to Japanese consumers, it appears Nintendo's other hit, Tomodachi Collection, has done just that. The Nintendo DS game once again shows off its long legs, securing third place behind Final Fantasy XIII and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

And what games would dare go up against Square Enix? Well, clothes-ripping, breast-teasing PSP game Queen's Blade: Spiral Chaos, which moved 50,000 copies to horny Japanese gamers in its debut week.

Much can change over the course of ten years. Tastes evolve, trends disappear and emerge, technology advances, ideas blend together, and theoretically, we keep moving forward by making things better. The last decade of game development has seen some remarkable changes, and if you think back to the type of games you were playing at the end of 1999 compared to the ones occupying your disc trays (or hard drives!) now,we've come a long way in such a short time. Distilling a decade of development into ten choices is a difficult task, and there's plenty of room for argument -- we've made our 10 picks, feel free to suggest changes, additions or subtractions in the comments below.

 
The Sims (2000) -- The Rise of the Casuals

Why It Was Influential: For us traditional gamers, The Sims provided the opportunity to screw around with digital people, building rooms without doors (or bathrooms) and watching the digital nervous (and digestive) system break down. It was a science experiment without any controls or psychological repercussions. But for the millions of people whose experience playing The Sims was the first time they ever touched a video game, it was a chance to build fantasy versions of themselves...what they'd like to be if money and real-life social awkwardness were taken out of the equation -- a different version of life that was more under control. A flurry of expansion packs kept the fire burning, and prior to the splash Blizzard would make a few years later, The Sims absolutely dominated the PC gaming space.

Effects Still Felt Today:  The Sims established the perfect mix of traditional and what would become to be known as "casual" gaming, and it made an entire new segment of the population more comfortable with the idea of playing games -- something Nintendo would eventually capitalize on six years later in a monumental way.

Why It Was Influential:  Electronic Arts had decided not to throw its mighty support behind the Sega Dreamcast, preferring to bet the farm on the PlayStation 2. This meant that the only place to get Madden football, which was just emerging as a true cultural zeitgeist, would be on Sony's new machine. Now, thanks to the rolling momentum of the PlayStation, the PS2 would assuredly had been successful had Madden not been exclusive...but its role in cementing the October 2000 launch lineup cannot be understated. Television news crews were dispatched to overnight launch lines across the country, lines that probably wouldn't have existed based on FantaVision and Ridge Racer V alone. Some saw the value in PSone backwards compatibility and the DVD player, but college kids scrounged up the nearly $400 (including the game and a second Dual Shock 2) because they just had to have that Madden.

Effects Still Felt Today:  Seeing the true power of their #1 franchise, Electronic Arts locked up NFL exclusivity in 2004 and maintain that "competitive advantage" (i.e. monopoly) to this day. Coincidentally, the PS2 went on to sell well over 100 million units worldwide over the course of the decade, and Sega announced they would cease production of the Dreamcast in early 2001, leaving the hardware business entirely.

Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) -- Hail to the Chief

Why It Was Influential:  Credit where credit is due, 1997's Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64 broke first ground. But it wasn't until Microsoft convinced Bungie to make their first-person shooter Halo the cornerstone launch title for their Xbox that the industry started to take console first-person shooters really, really seriously. This epic space sci-fi shooter finally made the game pad a viable and comfortable alternative to the PC's mouse-and-keyboard combo, it made it okay to just have two weapons on hand instead of 10, and it introduced us to perhaps the most iconic character of the decade: the Master Chief. The game's multiplayer was incredibly popular, even before Xbox Live made its debut: the concept of networked Xbox machines running matches of Oddball prepped the battlefield for Halo 2, which propelled online console gaming to new heights.

Effects Still Felt Today:  The Halo franchise made a huge impact during the decade. Halo 2 would establish the matchmaking system as the most popular way to design online shooters; the promise of Halo 3 combined with Microsoft's year-long head start on Sony meant that the Xbox 360 would be massively successful (and while they waited for Halo 3, a little game called Gears of War was born in the interim), and slowly but surely, more FPS started to gravitate to the console and away from the PC...Modern Warfare 2's changes to the PC version being a prime recent example. Sony never had a strong answer to Halo and were slow out of the gate on an online service, which could be attributed as a reason why the PS3 currently lags behind the Xbox 360.

Grand Theft Auto III (2001) -- Building a Better Sandbox

Why It Was Influential: It was a matter of timing and technology. The PlayStation 2 was doing well, but there was something...missing. That one game that defined the system. Madden was there, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid would get there soon enough. But in the meantime, the fumes kept building and building and building...until Rockstar Games dropped the match: Grand Theft Auto III. The first two GTA games were lesser-known quantities: 2D top-down action romps through the criminal underworld that were appreciated by those who "got it." But when it switched to 3D, GTA seemed to click with everyone. And how could it not? A playground where our inner bad guy could come out and wreak guilt-free havoc, and as they got into Vice City and San Andreas, Rockstar showed how you could create a cohesive gaming world filled with biting (and oftentimes sophomoric) social satire, flawed but appealing characters, and killer licensed soundtracks.

Effects Still Felt Today: Two simple words: "open world." Grand Theft Auto derailed the action game, and suddenly we were free to go wherever we want and do (almost) whatever we wanted. A legion of imitators followed suit -- some of which put their own spins and improvements on the idea -- and an entirely new genre was born. The game's unreserved takes on violence and sex, however, made Night Trap and Mortal Kombat seem like Saturday morning fare, and the mainstream media would start using GTA as the prime example (read: easy scapegoat and talking point) whenever something bad would happen in the world. As Rockstar pushed the boundaries of taste and society wrung its collective hands over the alleged effects on our nations' youths, it inadvertently made the concept of moral choice an issue video games would start addressing in their stories.


Half-Life 2 (2004) -- Steam Works

Why It Was Influential: Technology drives games, and games drive technology. So it was with Valve's Half-Life 2, the long-awaited sequel to the groundbreaking 1998 first-person shooter. Built using the flexible and hopefully long-lasting Source engine, Half-Life 2 was an epic adventure through a fully realized world of oppression. By putting us once more into the slightly nerdy glasses of a silent protagonist, Valve set new standards for game narrative that were dependent on direct interaction with the environment -- instead of experiencing the story through cinematics, the entire experience was cinematic in itself. But content aside, Half-Life 2 was the all-important catalyst for Valve's new Steam initiative, bringing the phrase "digital distribution" to the forefront. A rocky launch plagued by technical issues wasn't the best foot forward, but the kinks got ironed out, and today it's Valve, not Microsoft, who's leading the way in the PC gaming space.

Effects Still Felt Today: Next time you're in your local electronics retailer, take a gander at the PC section...it's not what it used to be. The mentality of downloading games directly to your PC's hard drive is paving the way for the same thing to happen on the game consoles. And with Microsoft continuing to drop the ball on some sort of unified PC gaming initiative, players are pretty pleased with Steam's convenience and its sense of community.

World of Warcraft (2004) -- Massive Is An Understatement

Why It Was Influential: In the days of Ultima Online and EverQuest, MMORPGs were seen as solely the realm of the unfairly labeled "nerds"...stat hounds and fantasy fanatics. But it was Blizzard's World of Warcraft that made that first "M" truly something massive. It's weird if you think about one game with orcs, warriors, and elves being more popular than another game also featuring orcs, warriors, and elves, but Blizzard's artistic approach to WoW had a friendly and inviting Disney-esque quality to it -- it also didn't hurt being based on one of the most popular PC franchises of all time. The player base skyrocketed, which meant that development and support teams expanded, and the world of Azeroth evolved dramatically as Blizzard provided regular new content and balance adjustments. Everyone knows at least one person who canceled their account only to reactivate it when the two expansions kept the party going.

Effects Still Felt Today: Five years later, WoW is still going strong. The third expansion, Cataclysm, is currently under development and will dramatically change the face of the game's "old world," which players have been accustomed to since the launch in 2004. It's also made a surprising impact on popular culture, with celebrities freely admitting that they've rolled characters, and an entire episode of South Park was based on the game. WoW is such a juggernaut, other MMO developers and publishers need to think long and hard about their business strategy.

Brain Age (2005, Japan) -- Train a Nation in Millions a Day

Why It Was Influential: On paper, the Nintendo DS is fairly absurd. A portable gaming device with two screens, one of them touch-sensitive, that will instantly be competing with the Game Boy Advance juggernaut. Many wrote it off as an impending hardware disaster on par with the Virtual Boy. But what we didn't know was that deep within the walls of their headquarters in Kyoto, Japan...Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had a plan. Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Castlevania...these traditional games would have no problem selling to the gamers already eager and willing to buy them. But it was going to take something else, something completely different, to capture the attention of people who have never played a video game in their life. That something was Brain Age, a test of cognitive rapid reaction marketed as some sort of enjoyable science. Its eventual massive success fueled DS sales for years to come and ushered in the era of the "non-game," lifestyle software designed to appeal to a much broader audience.

Effects Still Felt Today: The dominance of the DS and the unimaginable death of the Game Boy brand, the casual-friendly business strategy driving the success of the Nintendo Wii, the glut of 3rd-party shovelware lifestyle games, and the cries of spurned and self-described "forgotten" Nintendo fans who curse the names of Brain Age, Nintendogs, and Wii Fit.

Guitar Hero (2005) -- Believe in Music

Why It Was Influential: What Konami's Guitar Freaks got wrong, RedOctane got right...it's all about the music. Guitar Hero's approach wasn't just about being a rhythm game, it was about turning you into that rock 'n roll god that you wanted to be since high school. (Or while currently in high school.) Hitting the notes at the right time was an important part of the game, but when you missed it you weren't disappointed over the lack of points, you were disappointed about the missing screech of the solo. Fantasy-fulfillment is a primary reason why we all play games, and Guitar Hero's pitch perfect execution launched an entire micro-industry that not only influenced video games, but the music industry as well.

Effects Still Felt Today: Music games are everywhere, for better or worse. Peripheral-based gaming is currently peaking thanks to the heated rivalry between Electronic Arts/Harmonix and Activision/Neversoft. Artists are choosing to debut new music over Rock Band and Guitar Hero, while others are reaching back into their recorded and live catalogs in an attempt to get a piece of the action. The amount of plastic instruments some of us have in our living rooms is alarming (as is the cumulative amount spent on downloading additional songs), so we'll have to see how much longer the show can go on.


Wii Sports (2006) -- Motion in the Blue Ocean

Why It Was Influential: As the GameCube limped to a regrettable finish, many speculated that much like Sega at the beginning of the decade, this was Nintendo's last hurrah as a hardware manufacturer. Oh, how wrong these people were. Their success with the DS proved that their "blue ocean" approach (that is, cultivating a new audience) was viable, so they needed something similar to shake off the "disappointment" of the GameCube. At the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, the world found out why Nintendo codenamed their new project "Revolution" -- a simple remote control that detected 3D motion. The first images pf the controller get-up were stunning...in that "they have completely lost it" sort of way. But early reports about a functioning version of Metroid Prime 2 were almost entirely positive. But Metroid wasn't even close to "blue ocean," so something else was in order: Wii Sports. A collection of mini-games that highlighted the features of the motion control was included with every single Wii system sold in the United States. For many months after its 2006 launch, it was nearly impossible to find a Wii system on store shelves because the buzz around Wii Sports' bowling game -- bowling, if you can believe it -- was everywhere in the mainstream media. The interactivity and novelty of Wii Sports resonated with children, adults, grandparents...regardless if they knew what "Nintendo" was. As such, it was the most important pack-in game of all time.

Effects Still Felt Today: If somebody told you in 2004 that Nintendo would be back in first place, comfortably ahead of Sony's PlayStation 3, the ensuing fit of laughter and derision would have been legendary. But here we are in 2009, with both Microsoft and Sony furiously at work on their own motion controller technology in an effort to claim some of the pie. Longtime Nintendo fans are still dealing with abandonment issues (despite the promise of more Mario, Metroid, and Zelda), and sales of the Wii have cooled significantly during this economic downturn, but for now, Nintendo's in the driver seat.


Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) -- Perks of the Job

Why It Was Influential: For the better portion of the decade, the online shooter was Bungie's world, and we were just living in it. But then a funny thing happened on the way to Normandy -- in 2007, Infinity Ward decided that the curtains should fall on WWII as a theater of combat, and it was time for warfare to be a bit more modern. Call of Duty 4's single-player campaign was a tightly scripted nuclear blast of an experience, but it was the game's multiplayer that started to shift the balance of power from Master Chief to "Soap" MacTavish. Infusing it with a reward system that doled out experience and player upgrades at a perfectly-tuned pace was a master stroke by Infinity Ward, and millions of FPS players were kept firmly attached to the teat. It was as simple as visually displaying the "+10" for every successful kill...a constant sense of progression and growth.

Effects Still Felt Today:  Modern Warfare 2 has sold over six million copies just months after its release. The experience-based multiplayer system is making its way into more and more online shooters, and while it can be argued that tolerating the average COD player exercises the limits of human patience, the power of Modern Warfare is such that Microsoft did not feel the need to put out a first-party game this holiday season -- it is the game to own for the Xbox 360.

Honorable Mention

Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast, 2000):  The first serious instance of viable online console gaming.

Devil May Cry (PlayStation 2, 2001) -- Defining 3D action games for the decade to come (God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta...)

Battlefield 1942 (PC, 2002) -- What GTA was to the single-player sandbox, Battlefield '42 was to the multiplayer.

Animal Crossing (GameCube, 2002) -- Nintendo was way ahead of the "social gaming" curve.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (Xbox 360, 2005) -- A strong opening statement for small downloadable games.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii continues its strong sales performance in Japan, moving the Wii game well past the million mark with another 431,000 copies sold. You know, maybe Nintendo should make *more* Mario games!

Sure, New Super Mario Bros. Wii's rock solid performance comes as little surprise and we expect to see the game at or near the top of the charts for weeks to come. Obviously we expect Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII to be right up there with it, but those figures won't be in until next week.

Other games that charted well this week, according to Japanese sales monitor Media Create, include Namco Bandai's Tales of Graces for the Wii, the Japanese version(s) of Modern Warfare 2, and the latest Naruto title for PSP.

Media Create Weekly Software Sales [Gpara]

Nintendo's mushroom-munching plumber sells nearly 1 million in one week as Wii sells 106K to lead hardware.

Nintendo began the week on the right foot, when Famitsu publisher Enterbrain announced that New Super Mario Bros. Wii had set a console record with 936,734 units sold from December 3-6, the game's first four days of availability. Fellow stat-tracking firm Media Create has now corroborated those figures, placing Nintendo's latest platformer at the top of its November 30-December 6 chart with 934,739 units sold.

As a plumber, Mario has considerable job security.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii wasn't the only game to land with a big splash during the week. Sega's Phantasy Star Portable 2 for the PSP debuted in second with 286,896 units sold. The finish just outpaced fellow PSP title Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next Plus, which sold 222,985 units. Koei's Samurai Warriors 3 for the Wii landed in fourth, achieving first-week sales of 121,182.

Having topped Media Create's November 23-29 chart, Level 5's Professor Layton and the Flute of Malevolent Destiny sank to fifth with 85,034 units sold. Two other best-selling DS titles, Tomodachi Collection and Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, landed in sixth and eighth with respective 74,951 and 63,026 tallies. PokePark Wii: Pikachu no Daibouken opened in seventh with 63,760 units sold, while the PS3 edition of Assassin's Creed II was the final new release to chart, landing in 10th with 48,748 units sold.

The Wii handily secured top billing on the hardware charts during the week, selling 106,555 units in Japan. Sony's PSP shifted 67,880 units, a figure bolstered slightly by the PSP Go's 3,412 sales, while the PS3 finished third with 57,782 units. Nintendo's string of handhelds came next, with the DSi LL, DSi, and DS Lite selling a respective 53,791, 51,635, and 8,367 units. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 rounded out the chart, selling 5,314 units and 2,277 units each.

Ah, the INTERNET. What began as an attempt to keep military facilities networked in the event of nuclear war has brought us wonders beyond anyone's imagining at its inception, such as TOS violation porn, cyberstalking, and the widespread worship of airborne dinner. But, beyond all this, the Internet has brought with it the power of online gaming. Millions of gamers, able to play together simultaneously in any number of games, without the constraints of time or place.

That's right, countless children (and man-children) with moderate-to-severe social impairment, en masse, with their Cheeto-dusted keyboards and sweaty controllers bringing them together in worldwide unison, whenever and wherever they wish.

Al Gore, what the hell were you thinking? 

Honestly, online play is pretty awesome, and a pretty revolutionary concept. Gone are the days of having to lug your desktop rig to LAN parties (somewhat regrettably, I might add), or waiting on friends to come over in order to enjoy a multiplayer session. Things have come along to the point that games are developed specifically with multiplayer in mind, rather than it being a mere supplement to the solo experience. Your competitive experience is based on more than just how many quarters you've scrounged together to take to the arcade, or how generous your parents were on holidays and whether or not you had a younger sibling.

Playing on one of the many networks out there can also be a great social outlet. Meeting gamers that share your tastes in games or other things, and having someone to talk to besides your cat during a lengthy session is probably a boost to one's mental health. Personally, I recall having one conversation after a game of TMNT 1989 Arcade on Xbox Live, back before the Party system, that lasted two hours after we'd finished playing and left the stat screen up. The anonymity of the Internet helps break down a lot of initial anxieties that might impede meeting people otherwise, and the advent of user pictures and Avatars have made it that much easier to misrepresent oneself in order to increase the chances of people talking to you in the first place.

This anonymity has a flip side, however, that lends itself to a whole host of issues that mar what is otherwise an amazing place to play. Without face to face contact, many people feel that normal social mores need not apply, and consequently turn into absolute fuckwits.



For starters, your average online gaming session, especially in competitive first-person-shooters, is the greatest collection of racial, ethnic, and other offensive slurs outside of a KKK rally in the deep American South. Muting your headset or not even having voice chat capabilities are not escapes, either. The Gamecube version of Phantasy Star Online's visual chat was rife with swastikas and Hitler faces by the end of the game's life (which would have been hilarious had they not been serious), and one of my better 1 vs 100 sessions this season, which inspired some celebratory Avatar dancing, led to a message from someone I'd never met informing me, "UR AVATAR IS A FAG." And here, I hadn't even gotten the pink Depeche Mode shirt from Left 4 Dead 2 and built an outfit to coordinate with it yet!

Another element of real-life interaction that's been thrown out the window by many an online gamer is sportsmanship. Victory has become so desirable, above all else, that hacking and the pursuit of in-game exploits run rampant, to the point that anti-hack software and game patches have never been able to completely catch up. Rage-quitting is another, just-as-frequent offense, with disconnects being used to deny opponents their hard-earned wins, or damning teammates to a round down a man, which can spell disaster in higher-level competition.

And even when players are playing legitimately, trash-talk abounds, and offensive gestures such as teabagging have been developed as a means of gloating or otherwise showing displeasure with one's associates. Whatever happened to sucking it up and seeing a match through? How hard is it to take your licks and use them in later rounds, learning your opponents' play styles and adapting to them? And how sweet are some of the kills that happen, even if you're on the receiving end?



Related to the above, it seems teamwork is dead. Most online-enabled games with a playlist system will see the bulk of their traffic in the "kill everything" modes, be it free-for-all or team slayer, while gametypes featuring more cooperation and more complex goals take more time finding matches. The winning-is-everything mentality seen in cheating and forced disconnects extends to an idea that victory should be yours, and yours alone. Attempting to suggest any sort of strategy will get you ignored or shot down, and failing to be effective toward any of the manifold, unspoken strategies of your teammates, since you have no idea what anyone's doing will get you called out, if not kicked from the game. Someone needs to clarify to these sorts that your average USB, Bluetooth, or any other sort of headset is not a telepathic transceiver.

I'll be the first to acknowledge that none of these problems are particularly easy to fix, and may never go away. Games will never release completely bug-free, humans will never entirely cease hating things that are different than themselves, and pretty much everyone is taught from birth to look out for number one. Fixes and options crop up all the time, from anti-cheat software to things like party-only chat, but those have their own pitfalls; new software always ends up having new weaknesses and loopholes, and party chatting with people you already know removes a player's option to meet new people. Punishing players who disconnect may discourage active drops, but can also effect those with less reliable internet connections, which become more and more common the further you get from urban areas.

The only perfect solution, really, is not to play. Given the current trend of games toward more and better (for the most part) online experiences, that's hardly an option, unless you're really into casual games, puzzles, and role-playing. I guess the best thing I can recommend is to endure the griefers and the self-styled internet badasses, try not to let douchebags get in the way of your fun, and don't be afraid of other players.

Sure, dickotry may abound online, but one day, people might begin to realize that their coplayers and opponents are more than just disembodied voices who are shooting at them. For every dozen rounds you spend having your sexuality being questioned, you spend one or two cruising around with a couple guys in a Warthog, harmonizing to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."

Nintendo released New Super Mario Bros. Wii in Japan last week, giving the console its biggest first-week software sales in the country to date, more than 950,000 copies sold, according to Media Create.

That puts it ahead of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, ahead of Mario Kart Wii, and ahead of everything else released in Japan this week. While two new PSP games—Phantasy Star Portable 2 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next Plus—scored second and third place with impressive numbers, their sales couldn't come close to the newest of New Super Mario Bros.

And speaking of New Super Mario Bros., the Nintendo DS original is still represented well on this week's chart, managing to score 24th place this week, many years after its initial debut.

As for the new games, Assassin's Creed II managed a top ten showing, as did PokePark for the Wii. In danger of slipping from Media Create's top thirty is poor old Dragon Quest IX. Hang in there, DQ!
