If you’ve been to the South by Southwest conference and caught one of the bigger presenters, chances are you’ve seen the folks at ImageThink working furiously away on murals as the presenters did their sessions, capturing their ideas and turning them into graphical form. They were at the MIX conference this morning, capturing all the announcements about Internet Explorer 9 (and 10). Their murals were shown in the main hall afterwards and I snapped some photos of them – click any of the pictures to see them at full size:

Your Editor is in Port Elizabeth for this weekend's Spec Savers Ironman South Africa. It's good to be back. The organising team at Triangle Events are always so warm and welcoming, and having been here two years ago, I didn't hesitate to take up their kind offer to attend this years event - especially given the professional line up for the 2011 edition, the seventh full-distance running of the event here in Port Elizabeth. There will be a LOT more coverage from Port Elizabeth over the coming days, as I chat to the athletes, report on the news and bring you some images pre, during and post-race, of the sights and sounds (which are always bright, and always loud!) of South Africa. Before all of that though, consider this the 'formal' pre-event preview element...pre-race Press Conference tomorrow (Friday) morning. Ladies The headline act here of course, as she is wherever she goes, is Chrissie Wellington MBE. This will be her 11th start over the ironman-distance, and unless you've been in a cave since 2007 you'll know that she has been on the top step of the podium in every one of those previous races, winning three World Championships, setting world records and breaking the nine-hour barrier on an incredible six occasions. Nobody - at least that I know - is expecting anything other than a Wellington Tour de Force once more, and with the course record currently standing at 9:16:32 (Lucie Zelenkova, 2009), a good performance on a decent weather day could/should see another 8:XX clocking. I guess a measure of the Wellington brilliance is the ease with which we all just (quite reasonably based on past performances) 'expect' such heights to be reached. Incredible athlete, but great to see that she is also raising the bar for the others to follow. There is further British interest in the ladies race through Rachel Joyce and Ironman UK Champion Yvette Grice. Rachel finished third here in 2009 (read her report HERE), and despite a severe foot injury in Abu Dhabi last year, and a spectacular bike crash in Arizona to finish 2010, has been on a major upward curve ever since, with a sixth and a fifth in Kona. The unknown - in a performance sense, not in terms of results (!) - here is Natascha Badmann. She may now be 44, but the six-time Ironman World Champion has battled back after a huge crash in Kona 2007, but as she showed at Ironman 70.3 New Orelans two years ago, she can still bike like a bullet. She also won this race three times previously (2005/6/7). I'm looking forward to seeing if her infamous Cat Cheetah bike will be burning up the tarmac around the Eastern Cape. She may be the only athlete that can out-smile Chrissie on the race course! Men South African hopes for a win rest with two home town athletes in Raynard Tissink (winner in 2005 and 2010), and teamTBB's James Cunnama, who really is on the rise over the past two seasons, ending 2010 with wins at Alpe d'Huez, Ironman Florida, Rev3 Cedar Point and Ironman 70.3 Austin. Both are in fine form - Tissink was a very close fourth in Abu Dhabi, while Cunnama was second to Kris Gemmell at Ironman 70.3 Singapore. Their problem in this race? A tall Belgian athlete called Marino Vanhoenacker! Winner in 2009 here, and with eight Ironman titles in the bag already, Marino produced arguably one of the greatest triathlon performances ever in Klagenfurt last season. His 7:52:05 clocking at Ironman Austria was the fourth fastest time ever, and was produced via stunning solo performance. Since then he has taken third at Kona, and second at Abu Dhabi with a broke rib! With a month to recover from that, I'm expecting Vanhoenacker to hit the front of the bike course very early on, and it will be interesting to see who does, or can, go with him. With Cunnama likely to lose some time in the water, he's going to miss the Vanhoenacker Express on two wheels, and will have to rely on his fast feet on the run course to claw back time. Plenty of other names to watch too - Luke Bell (AUS) has been a top performer over the 70.3 distance for many years, but never quite cracked the full distance. His seventh place an sprint finish with Craig Alexander in Abu Dhabi would suggest he is in good shape too. Michael Gohner recorded a 7:55 at Challenge Roth two seasons ago, but hasn't shown that sort of form since while another Belgian, Rutger Beke, will be hoping he can bring the sort of performance which produced third place at Kona in 2008. Toby Radcliffe and Craig Twigg are listed as GB pro's. Predictions I like a prediction, for my own amusement primarily, and so here's my top three picks this weekend. Pos Men Women 1st Marino Vanhoenacker (BEL) Chrissie Wellington (GBR) 2nd Raynard Tissink (RSA) Rachel Joyce (GBR) 3rd James Cunnama (RSA) Natascha Badmann (SUI) Check back over the next few days for lots more coverage from Port Elizabeth.

On Friday, RSA Security held an analyst conference to provide more details on the recent security breach and subsequent investigation. RSA provided a bit more detail on the "Advanced Persistent Threat" (APT), the actual root cause of the security breach. Apparently, cyber criminals did a lot of intelligence gathering on specific RSA employees. Read more

Normally, when EMC fails, it is worth a giggle. Companies are run by humans, and nobody is perfect. However, their latest one, failing to defend their RSA SecurID two-factor website, is no laughing matter. Breaches like this undermine the trust needed for business and commerce to be done with Information Technology, so it affects the entire IT industry.

(FTC Disclosure: I do not work or have any financial investments in either EMC nor ENC Security Systems. Neither EMC nor ENC Security Systems paid me to mention them on this blog. Their mention in this blog is not an endorsement of either company or their products. Information about EMC was based solely on publicly available information made available by EMC and others. My friends at ENC Security Systems provided me an evaluation license for their latest software release so that I could confirm the use cases posed in this post.)

Of course, EMC did the right thing by making this breach public in an [Open Letter to RSA Customers]. While this may affect their revenues, as clients question whether they should do business with EMC, or affect their stock price, as investors question whether they should invest in EMC, they were very clear and public that the breach occurred. As far as I know, none of the executives of the RSA security division have stepped down. The disclosure of the breach was the right thing to do, and required by law from the [US Securities Exchange Commission]. This law was created to prevent companies from trying to hide breaches that expose external client information.

The breach does not affect RSA public/private key pairs used by IBM and most every other large company. Rather, this breach was targeted to RSA SecurID two-factor authentication. I explained two-factor authentication in my blog post [Day 5 Grid, SOA and Cloud Computing - System x KVM solutions], but basically it is an added level of security, requiring something you know (your password) with something you have (such as a magnetic card or key fob). Both are required to gain access to the system.

Breaches happen. Recently, [Hackers found vulnerabilities in the McAfee.com website]. Last month, fellow blogger Chuck Hollis from EMC had a blog post on [Understanding Advanced Persistent Threats (APT)] in the week leading up to their RSA Conference. It was precisely an APT that hit RSA, so the irony of this breach was not lost on the blogosphere. Perhaps Chuck's blog post gave hackers the idea to do this, like saying "I hope terrorists don't bomb this building that hold all of our chemical weapons..." or "I hope bank robbers don't rob this repository where we keep all the cash..."

(The sinister counter-theory, that EMC staged this breach as a marketing stunt to undermine trust in hybrid or public cloud offerings, such as those offered by IBM, Amazon or Salesforce.com, offers an interesting twist. While computer breaches in general are fodder for [Luddites] to argue we should not use computers at all, this particular breach could be used by EMC salesmen to encourage their customers to choose private cloud over hybrid cloud or public cloud deployments.  Given all the extra work that RSA SecurID customers have to now do to harden their environments, that would be in bad taste.)

Over on Mashable, Simon Crosby argues [Why the Cloud Is Actually the Safest Place for Your Data]. I am sure we have not heard the last of the implications of this RSA breach. For now, I have two recommendations for you.

Validate Backup Methodology

Today, March 31, is World Backup Day. This is because many viruses are triggered to operate on April 1. Just like checking the batteries in your smoke alarms every year, you should ensure that your backup methodology remains valid.

Back in 2008, I was a volunteer for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative, and built an XS server to be used for Uruguay. I shipped [this baby off to school] to be the central server that all the student and teacher laptops connected to. It was the gateway to the Internet, as well as the [repository for the blogs of each student]. The blogs were accessible to the public, so that parents could read what their students were writing.

Unfortunately, this public access resulted in my little XS server being attacked by hackers, with IP addresses in Russia and China. Why anyone from either of those two countries wanted to ruin the hopes and dreams of small school children in Uruguay was beyond me. Fortunately, I had planned for remote administration. Backups were taken by me weekly to a second drive that was only mounted when I was dialed in to take the backup. The rest of the time, it was offline, so as not to be written to by hackers.

I also shipped along with the server a bootable DVD that contained a modified version of [System Rescue CD], scripts to start up SSHD daemon, and pre-populated for use with public/private RSA keys for me and eight other administrators located in various countries. To effect repairs, the local operator would reboot to the DVD, and then I could login via "ssh" and restore the operating system, programs and data. Sadly, this meant that the students might have lost some of their most recent blog posts since the last backup.

Please consider reviewing your own backup strategies. If your security were compromised, data was corrupted or lost, would you be able to recover from your backups?

Use Encryption where Appropriate

If you plan to travel this Summer, you may want to consider encryption to protect yourself. ENC Security Systems has just released their latest [Encrypt Stick] which is a USB memory stick pre-loaded with software that provides three features:

1. Encryption for your files
2. A secure web browser for accessing sensitive websites
3. Secure password manager

Hotel Lobby

Many hotels now offer computers for use by the guests. These are typically running some flavor of Windows operating system. Encrypt Stick comes with an EXE file that you can run to browse the web securely, and have access to your encrypted files and passwords, leaving no trace on the hotel lobby computer.

Friends and Family

What if you are visiting friends and family, and they have a Mac instead? No problem, as Encrypt Stick has a DMG file to use on Mac OS X operating system. While you may not be worried about your siblings hacking into your bank account, you may not want them necessarily seeing what sites you visited.

Airport Lounge

I have been to several airport lounges now that use Linux for their public computers. Makes sense to me, as there are fewer viruses for Linux, and updating Linux is relatively straightforward. However, Encrypt Stick does not support Linux. For my Linux-knowledgeable readers, you can build your own with [Unetbootin] bootable USB memory stick to launch your favorite Linux browser in memory on whatever system you are using. The [Gparted Magic] utility rescue tool includes [TrueCrypt] to encrypt your files. Lastly, you can use [MyPasswordSafe] to hold all of your passwords securely.

Several clients have asked if any of the IBM data-at-rest encrypted disks or tapes are affected by this breach. IBM uses AES encryption for the actual disk and tape media, but we do use RSA keys to encrypt the generated keys used on the TS1120 and TS1130 drives. However, these were not affected by the RSA SecurID breach, and your tapes are safely protected.

Advanced Persistent Threats, viruses and other malware are no laughing matter. If you are concerned about security, contact IBM to help you assess your current environment and help you plan a robust protection strategy.

Toby Moskovits is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Heritage Equity Partners. She has spent the past twelve years advising companies across a range of industries and stages on strategic and operational growth strategies. "It's long weeks to short months at best before there's a security meltdown," Thus spake Brian Snow, the former technical director of the Information Assurance Directorate of the United States National Security Agency (NSA) and a prominent critic of Cloud Computing. His remarks were part of a presentation he delivered at a university talk in Alberta, Canada. This was not the first time he's offered such an opinion. He had noted his distrust of the Cloud earlier this year at the RSA Security Conference, noting that "you don't know what else is cuddling up next to it." This is not some random Chicken Little trying to panic everybody off of Facebook and into the streets: according to his biography, Brian "spent much of his early NSA career in research - developing cryptographic components and systems. Many of his algorithms are used today in cryptographic systems serving the U.S. government and military. These systems provide capabilities not previously available, and span a range from nuclear command and control to tactical radios for the battlefield. He has garnered patents and many awards and honors attesting to his creativity."

A look at underground sites revealed stolen American credit cards can go for as little as 80 cents, Hugh Thompson, program committee chair of the RSA Conference, told eWEEK. But just as interesting is the other data that is for sale...."

"When Dickie George of the National Security Agency says, "This is life and death and about our freedom and our way of life," hes not talking about the Soviet Union firing nuclear missiles at the U.S. or infiltrating our government with spies bent on subversion. Hes talking about cyber criminals hacking into personal, business or government computers, stealing information, intellectual property and/or money. George is the Information Assurance Technical Director at the NSA and compared the threats of the current cyber cold war to the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union in a webcast Wednesday hosted by RSA Conference...."

A couple years ago, we were surprised by reports that former Vice President Al Gore had alerted attendees at an RSA conference where he was set to speak that no press were allowed, and that no one should report on what happened. It appears that his former boss, Bill Clinton, is doing something similar as PR handlers for his keynote at a Salesforce.com event have warned attendees not to report, tweet, Facebook or live blog during the event:

"PLEASE NOTE: President Clinton's representatives have mandated that there be absolutely no reporting during his session. That includes live blogging, Tweeting, Facebook posting or use of any other social media. We understand the inconvenience this may present, but greatly appreciate your compliance. Thank you."

It's difficult to think of a request that is more out of touch with what is happening in the world today. It's quite normal for people to communicate via such social media methods and shutting them off entirely (which won't actually work) just seems petty.

Nominations are now closed for our Christmas appeal 2010, which will support charities working with vulnerable teenagers and young adults. Many thanks to everyone who applied.

Our Christmas charity 2010 partners New Philanthropy Capital are now sifting through the 300 applications we received. A shortlist of projects will be submitted to a selection panel comprising Guardian/Observer and NPC staff at the end of October. Ten projects will be chosen.

We will contact both successful and unsuccessful applicants once the panel has reached it decision in early November. The appeal will launch towards the end of November and run until mid-January.

“Mini-MetriCon 5.5 (organized by securitymetrics.org, loosely defined ) is intended as a forum for lively, discussion in the area of security metrics. It is a forum for quantifiable approaches and results to problems afflicting information security today, with a bias towards specific approaches that demonstrate the value of security metrics with respect to a security-related goal. Topics and presentations will be selected for their potential to stimulate discussion in the workshop.
Mini-MetriCon will be a one-day event, Monday, February 14, 2010, co-located with the RSA Conference, the meeting room is a courtesy of RSA.
Mini-Metricon begins at 8:30am, and lunch is taken in the meeting room.
Attendance will be by invitation and limited in size.
All participants are expected to be willing to address the group in some fashion. Potential Mini-Metricon participants are expected to submit a discussion topic. Abstracts of papers, research projects, or practitioner presentations are encouraged and may result in a session allocation devoted to the submission topic. We also welcome ideas for 5-to-10-minute lightning talks on topics such as security-related data sets or key problems and challenges in security metrics. Collections of these talks are expected to result in group discussion on the submitter's topic of interest.
Submissions should be sent to  metricon5.5@securitymetrics.org  by November 12, 2010.”
Remember, the ONLY way to be there is to propose a discussion topic! There is no non-participating audience, as per event chapter
P.S. Last year I had to pass on both Cloud Security Alliance meet-up and some VC meetings in order to be at the Metricon – and I didn’t regret it one bit. As you can guess, I can recognize deep awesomeness, when I see it
