Streets of Rage 2 is one of those classic beat 'em up games that just about every Sega Genesis owner remembers fondly. Sega's iOS emulator is also a bit of a classic, in that it's been around for over two years and hasn't changed a bit. Does Sega's emulator get in the way of another great game?

In Streets of Rage 2, first released in 1992 on the Sega Genesis, you have to work your way to the right through hundreds of tough enemies who are looking to beat you to a pulp, slash you to ribbons, or crack you over the head with a lead pipe three feet long. These enemies don't listen to reason, just violence, leaving you no choice but to fight back just as viciously.

You can pick one of four different heroes, two of whom were in the first Streets of Rage. Each character has a main attack button, a jump button, and a special move that's powerful, but also uses up a bit of your health. The genius behind the Streets of Rage series is that you can combine these three buttons to create several different combos and special moves, and each character has their own unique moves and animations. In addition, you can pick up knives, pipes, and other weapons to really cause some damage.

For all its relentless violence, Streets of Rage 2 has a wonderful feeling of variety. You'll travel through a Disneyland-like pirate ride, a secret elevator in the middle of a baseball diamond, and a bar where the bad guys are playing their own beat 'em up arcade games. The enemies are no less varied, and you'll face down martial artists, punks, bikers, ninjas, and fat men breathing fire.

It's a fantastic game, even if it is very difficult, and contains a few leftover glitches from 1992. For example, you can beat up most enemies easily by spacing your punches a half second apart, stunning them in the middle of their animation cycles. Your character also can't carry weapons between scenes.

The problem, once again, is not with the 1992 game, which is emulated here perfectly. It's Sega's emulator, which forces you to deal with clunky onscreen controls that can't be moved or hidden. Also, there are no extras whatsoever, which is a missed opportunity to reward fans for nearly 20 years of devotion. It's the same complaint we've had with every Sega Genesis game on the App Store so far, including classics like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Gunstar Heroes.

Sega needs to wake up and realize that their sub-par iOS emulator is holding back their incredible collection of classic games. If they don't change, gamers will just jailbreak their phones and play ROMs for free on an unofficial emulator instead of paying $2.99 for an official app. Capcom, we should note, has made a similar beat 'em up, Final Fight, available for free in Capcom Arcade.

Anyone who loves classic action games should play Streets of Rage 2. It's an amazing game, but Sega should update their emulator and get with the times.

Destructoid's most popular live streaming show to feature a guy with a mustache playing old games, Backlog, has just wrapped up another round. That means its up to all the lovely readers to assist in the selection of our next game.

Lately, I've been trying to come up with some way to tie the games on offer in some kind of thematic way. So, in Series 8, all of the games you can choose from saw release in 2010. There is not only a great variety of titles, but some really popular ones as well. It may be difficult to narrow it down to just one, but I'm sure you'll find a way.

Heavy Rain

We all knew it was coming. I've made no secret out of Heavy Rain being in my Backlog, its narrative dissonance making the game a chore that I found hard to become absorbed in. I've tried on several occasions to play and even got a little excited about the addition of PlayStation Move controls. Still hasn't captured my interest. But it's one of those games I feel obligated to finish. You can help make that happen.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom

I honestly only bought this game because it was on sale at Amazon some months ago and people seemed pretty excited about that. After a brief stint of playing and being confused as to what the hell was going on, I dozed off on the couch and never touched it again. Seems a little slow at the start, but I have been told that I will enjoy it ultimately. Could that be true?

Splatterhouse

The original Splatterhouse series thrilled me to no end. The bizarre and gory enemies and Rick's monstrous beefiness is always worth a giggle, but that third game on the Sega Genesis was some seriously dark stuff. So, my interest was piqued over a reboot of the series but I sure as hell wasn't going to buy in at launch. Now a few months later, a cheap copy has found its way into my collection. Skull cracking will happen.

Fable III

I honestly love the Fable series. It's like the casual gaming answer to the action/RPG genre, with accessible combat and no consequence for player death, while still offering interesting characters and a world where there are just as many questions remaining as there are answers given. I bought Fable III immediately upon release knowing that my lovely fiancée would enjoy it, but I've yet to put the disc in for myself. Mayhaps it's time to go back to Albion.

Mystery Game

Finally, we have the Mystery Game. That's how we got TimeShift last time, as people clamored to know what it was and groaned when they learned. The intent here is to select the Mystery Game if none of the other games appeal to you, so voting for it just because you want to know what it is is kind of a dick move. 

If the Mystery Game is not chosen, it'll roll over into the next series where it will continue to be a mystery.

There haven’t been very many new retail game releases, so you should have plenty of spare change after holiday shopping, right? Good. Sega wants it. Not only that, but it is fully prepared to sink to underhanded means to get it. That is, if you consider a massive iTunes, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade sale underhanded. Yes, from December 21, 2010 until January 3, 2011 the Sega Mega Holiday Sale 2010 is on and you can stock up on gaming goodness. Or send some downloadable games to friends as gifts. It’s your choice really.

What I found most interesting was a little blurb on the Sega America Blog directed towards Xbox Live Arcade buyers. It hints that people who buy for friends will get a gift from Santa on December 30, 2010. How vague. A more blatant clue is given later under the section of the blog entry discussing the Xbox Live Arcade deals. Apparently a few games games will experience a price drop that day.

• Oceanhouse Media, Inc. today announced the launch of three new Little Critter digital books for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The children’s favorites Just Grandma and Me, All By Myself and I Just Forgot are now available in the App Store for only $1.99 each. The Little Critter digital books are presented in a format that is easy for young children to read. The apps contain the same playful artwork that has been a hallmark of, award-winning illustrator and author, Mercer Mayer. These “universal” apps can be used interchangeably with the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch for no additional charge and include special high-resolution graphics for devices with a Retina display.
• Red Umbrella Press has released The Terribly Tall Tales of EnzoB: Born to Race 1.0 for iPad users. The application is a heart-warming tale of a dwarf beagle, who overcomes obstacles to fulfill his dream to race. • InterLingua Publishing has announced its full collection of EngLits summaries of classic books of more than 80 titles in Apple’s iBookstore. Some of the EngLits titles include William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”,  Charles Dicken’s “Great Expectations”, and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”. EngLits summaries of classic books were developed to assist high school and college students to fully comprehend all of their school required reading.
• TotsMobile has released BugMath, a new educational game for the iPhone that teaches kids (ages 3 to 6) fundamental skills in counting, sequencing, addition, subtraction, and matching in a fun and interactive way. In the entire scope of human existence, from the first breath of primeval man to the towering cityscapes of the 21st century, fifteen years is barely any time at all. In the gaming industry, however, it’s a relative eternity, an epoch, a span of time in which entire console generations can rise and fall, trends can change, careers made and unmade, genres born and genres passed away …

Remember for a moment what your gaming experience was like in the mid-1990’s: a bulky, low-res, standard-definition TV connected to the final, gasping remains of your SNES or Sega Genesis. The PC in the adjacent room was a blocky, two-ton behemoth just barely capable of running Myst. Stacked crudely on the table beside it was undoubtedly a collection of boxes for the latest King’s Quest or Monkey Island games. The standard for interactivity consisted of LOOK AT, USE, PUSH, PULL, OPEN, CLOSE, GIVE and TALK TO. Phone bills sagged with the weight of costly calls to company hint lines.

And there was a sense that gaming might never be more than  the basement pastimes of proto-nerds in an age before geek was cool.

Then came Sony’s PlayStation, the console which history will no doubt remember as the evolutionary successor to the original NES. The next leap forward; the very foundation of our current high-def, wi-fi, online community that year-over-year now consistently trumps Hollywood. Of course, we hardly knew that at the time. The transition from cartridges and floppy discs to ever-spinning CDs damn near blew our minds. The Saturn, the 3DO, the Sega-CD – each of them stumbled where PlayStation somehow managed to succeed. While Nintendo’s N64 took only a shambling half-step forward, Sony leapt ahead, offering sharper graphics, superior sound and a more sophisticated brand of games, cinematic in scope and appealing to the rapidly aging player who’d only recently outgrown Mario.

Sony’s PlayStation laid the foundation for what would become the widest selling console in gaming history, the PlayStation 2. Nintendo would continue to serve a younger, more casual audience, and the emergence of Microsoft’s Xbox suggested a potential competitor in the making, but during its prime, the PlayStation brand single-handedly defined a generation of gamers, charting a course that the entire industry continues to follow. Without a doubt, the original PlayStation was integral in raising our demographic into the 18-34 stratosphere, solidifying gaming as a bona-fide entertainment industry, serving both adults and children alike, and deserving of trade show spectacles, online portals and dedicated TV programming.

Actually, the celebration of PlayStation’s tenth anniversary might have been a more joyous occasion, as we look back on the last five years as the Xbox 360 clambered its way to console domination and the PS3 initially struggled with product and pricing issues. But as the industry stays off the arrival of a subsequent generation of consoles with the emergence of Kinect and the Move, Sony’s historical platform finds itself with yet another opportunity to seize the future.

Prior to September 9, 1995, the idea that I would be sitting here today, writing this article, surrounded by my colleagues at G4 and joined in the industry by dozens of publications and hundreds of writers, might have been virtually incomprehensible … a gig at Nintendo Power might have been the most that a young gamer could hope for. The fact that all of this became possible is attributable largely to the floodgates opened by the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

So take a moment to remember what your gaming experience was like 15 years ago … and then imagine what it might be like 15 years from now.

Sega has released the Genesis Classics collection for the PC, hoping to bring back that feeling in those of us old enough to remember. I mean the awesome feeling, not the “That’s it!?” feeling.

Hits from Sega’s past including Golden Axe, Space Harrier and Ecco the Dolphin were a success in this past release so Sega is launching a new group of Genesis games for the PC. This new collection will include hits including the awesome Eternal Champions (Xavier FTW!), Columns, Super Thunder Blade II and Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle.

I could definitely get Eternal Champions and just for the good ol’ times I could finish Altered Beast a couple of times. This is a great move by Sega and the fact that it’s just a download makes it even more convenient.

Each game is available for $2.99 and they can be downloaded from Sega’s website, Steam, GamersGate and GameStreamer amongst others.

I remember the first time I saw Altered Beast. It was the best game I had ever seen. OK, I was like 8 at that time but back then it was like if someone had crammed the arcade with awesome and then turned it on. There were werewolves and dragons and silver werewolves, and they were all around the screen kicking ass. When I finally got a Genesis and I could play that game at home I was ecstatic, until I found out that Altered Beast had like three levels and then it was over.

Those who know me know that I am a Madden freak.

I’ve loved football video games since my dad put Tecmo Bowl in my hands in 1988, and still bust out Madden ’96 now and then when I’m at the family house and the Sega Genesis is readily accessible.

So now, with the release of Madden NFL ’11 on the horizon, I’m doubly excited.

Of course, I’m looking forward to the new features…but after seeing the rankings, I’m also pumped to see how I can take what’s apparently a gigantic collection of stiffs and turn them into a dynasty.

That’s right, stiffs. The Eagles, according to EA Sports, have four players who rank above 90—and one of them is a fullback. And the kicker is that the kicker is tied for fifth with the starting left guard.

But hey, I turned Jason Avant into a 2,000-yard receiver by using the wheel play to perfection in Madden ’07, so let’s see what I and the rest of Eagles Nation have to work with this fall.

Resurgence DLC for Activision military shooter and Sega spy RPG debut highlight a week including EA's Sims 3 Ambitions, 505 Games' Backbreaker, and Ubisoft's Pure Futbol.

Attempting to top a massive May's worth of new releases sounds like a fool's errand, but the lineup for the first week of June is nothing to shrug off. That's thanks to new Sims and Call of Duty offerings combined with the launch of three new intellectual properties.

Nothing good ever happens in a "FunHaus."

Perhaps the biggest release is the second map pack for Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Launching for Xbox 360, the Resurgence Map Pack ($15) is a collection of five multiplayer environments, which include three new maps and two remade Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare digs. Modern Warfare 2's first batch of downloadable content, the Stimulus Package, drew criticism for its price point, but went on to sell over 2.5 million units. PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the map pack are set to launch at a later date.

Similarly significant in terms of scale is Electronic Arts' Ambitions expansion to its PC hit The Sims 3. For the first time in a Sims game, players can control their Sim's livelihood on the job at any of the game's new professions. Ghost hunter, doctor, private investigator, and more are all possible career paths for each Sim included in Ambitions.

The first of the new intellectual properties launching this week mixes high-tech gadgetry and espionage with some time-tested role-playing-game character progression. Alpha Protocol is the first original project from Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind some high-profile sequels like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords, Neverwinter Nights 2, and the upcoming Fallout: New Vegas.

With just a couple weeks left before the World Cup kicks off in South Africa, Ubisoft will jump into the soccer genre with a new sim-minded effort. Due out for the Xbox 360 and PS3, Pure Futbol has Liverpool FC and England midfielder Steven Gerrard on its cover and aims to emphasize the physicality of the sport.

On the American football front, 505 Games is bringing Backbreaker to market. The PS3 and Xbox 360 gridiron simulator strays from the Madden formula in that it's unlicensed (although it does include team customization tools). Backbreaker also features interactive tackles and takes advantage of developer NaturalMotion's physics-based middleware technology (as featured in Grand Theft Auto IV and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed).

Earlier this week, Sega's Mike Hayes showed a rare but welcome respect for the past, admitting that his company had not treated some of its classic franchises as well as it should have. The more recent Sonic games and the dismal disappointment that was Golden Axe stand as hefty testament to this sad truth.

However, if Sega really is serious about giving its IP a serious revitalization, one can't argue that there are still plenty of untapped classics that it could stand to bring back. Sega is bested only by Nintendo when it comes to the range and quality of its past glories, and for a company so keen on whoring out its past franchises, there are a surprising number of games that have been long forgotten, trotted out only on downloadable platforms or retro compilations. 

So, which classic IP should Sega resurrect? With so many to choose from, you can't just pick one! Read on for a few noteworthy suggestions, and feel free to add your own!

Streets of Rage:

Perhaps the most popular and well-known Sega game not yet remade, Streets of Rage was a must-have for any Genesis owner worth his cartridges. The first two games especially kicked vast amounts of arse, taking the classic sidescrolling beat 'em up formula but adding a police car that would drop a nuke on criminals at the touch of a button. A tactical nuke, just to deal with a few gangbangers and drug dealers. That is how you fight crime. Stupid Miranda rights.

With games like Castle Crashers, Muramasa and the upcoming Shank getting a lot of attention, the once-dead beat 'em up genre has seen something of a resurgence this generation. If you just add a lick of HD paint and maybe a bit more depth to the combat system, there is no reason why a new Streets of Rage couldn't hit the digital market with most of its core gameplay intact. The simplicity of a good old fashioned brawler never gets old, and there's no doubt that a new Streets of Rage could appeal to retroheads and newbies alike. 

Just don't bring back those jackass flame jugglers. Screw those guys.

Vectorman:

It's still amazing to me that Vectorman has become such an obscure videogame. When the original Vectorman was released, it didn't only generate praise from critics, it turned out to be a commercial success as well. In fact, Vectorman was so successful that they were going to make a movie. So, why is Vectorman one of Sega's most forgotten characters, doomed only to return as a bit player on Sega's many nostalgia compilations? It really makes no sense. 

The last we saw of this lovable green robot was the ill-fated Vectorman 3, a game that exists only in terrible E3 tech demo form. Once in development for the PS2, the game was essentially a third-person Halo rip-off. All the game's humor had been taken out, gameplay looked generic at best and confusing at worst, while Vectorman himself looked like a very poor man's Master Chief. 

However, that's not to say Vectorman wouldn't work as a third-person shooter. Add in some cartoon violence on the scale of Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, preserve the tongue-in-cheek humor and classic cartoon look of the character, and you could have a great little game. Vectorman could definitely come back in the current generation, provided that Sega doesn't try and reinvent the character as a "dark" and "gritty" space marine. 

Decap Attack:

Decap Attack is, easily, one of my favorite Genesis games of all time. Of all time, sir! In Japan, the game was known as Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daibōken, and it was based on the anime Magical Hat. Since the license for Magical Hat was not obtained for outside Japan, the game's characters, level designs and graphics were almost entirely changed. The game was now about a headless mummy called Chuck D. Head, and it was awesome. 

The game's quirky design and solid platforming helped make it one of the best Genesis games out there, and Chuck himself deserves to be better remembered than he is. The character could work wonderfully either as a traditional sidescroller or a 3D action/adventure game. His head-flinging shenanigans might also work really well on the Wii as well. Decap Attack has a ton of potential. Cel-shade Chuck's ass and bring him back!

Night Trap:

I don't care what anybody says. Stick that thing on the Wii and you'll have a game of the year contender on your hands!

Ristar:

If there was a more beautiful, bright and bizarre Genesis game, I don't want to know about it. Ristar is, perhaps, the very best Sega character that never went anywhere. It defies all logic that he never became a big mascot for the company. Maybe kids of the nineties just didn't think anthropomorphic clouds of space gas were particularly cool. Not as cool as blue hedgehogs, in any case. 

Ristar started life as a rabbit, and not a star. In fact, he was what Sonic was originally going to be. Sega were designing various mascots in a bid to counteract Nintendo's ever-popular Mario. One of those designs was a rabbit with ears that stretched out to pick up objects. The rabbit became a hedgehog and dropped the stretchy gimmick, but the idea of stretchy limbs was developed further as a game called Feel. The ears turned into arms and the rabbit had been transformed into a star (originally called Dexstar). After a few redesigns, the game eventually became Ristar. 

I've always loved the look of Ristar. The vibrant color scheme and unique, endearing main character should have been much more successful. The game sold enough to be considered relatively popular, but no more than that. The character of Ristar has barely been seen since, making only insignificant cameos in Shenmue in Segagaga, and enjoying a brief run in Sonic the Comic. I literally do not care how Sega brings Ristar back, but he deserves better than he's gotten!

Crazy Taxi:

I am actually convinced that this one will happen. Crazy Taxi has proven so popular in arcades and is regarded as such a classic that there is no way Sega will leave this one alone. Crazy Taxi was namechecked, along with Streets of Rage, by Mike Hayes in his recent CVG interview, which could indicate a level of current interest in the game. Since its arcade debut, it's enjoyed ports on the Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, PC, GBA and PSP. This is a franchise Sega knows how to milk. 

The gameplay is so simple that it would require no changes. You pick people up and drive them to their destinations, trying not to laugh when the black lady inappropriately demands that you take her to KFC (this happens in the game and it is terrible). With a formula that easy, it's almost impossible to screw up. Almost. 

Beyond Oasis:

Beyond Oasis was one of the best Zelda clones ever made. It was a very clear effort to provide an alternative to Nintendo's classic adventure franchise, but it did enough different things to stand out on its own. It also looked terrific, both in terms of graphics (for the time) and art direction. 

It followed a typical top-down, dungeon-themed, action/adventure format, but main character Ali was helped along in his quest by various elemental spirits that could attack enemies and help him solve a variety of puzzles. It was really good fun, and while it lacked the inherent challenge of Zelda, it provided Genesis fans with a top notch adventure game to call their own. It enjoyed a Sega Saturn prequel, The Legend of Oasis, in 1996, but was never seen or heard from again, outside of a Virtual Console release and an appearance on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. 

Beyond Oasis is ripe for a reboot. Gamers still love a classic action/adventure game, and Sega has the means to provide it. Sure, it'll never rival The Legend of Zelda, but putting a Beyond Oasis game on the PS3 or Xbox 360, with gorgeous visuals and Zelda-esque gameplay is a surefire winner, at least in my book. We might not be able to get Hyrule in HD, but Sega could at least provide a near-perfect forgery and continue to do what Nintendon't. 

Comix Zone:

Everything about Comix Zone is fantastic. From its wonderfully bizarre premise to its killer graphics and utterly amazing soundtrack, this scrolling beat 'em up is a classic in every sense of the word. If only it wasn't so brutally difficult that you lose health even by punching barrels, something you need to do to progress through the game. Oh, and being able to get past the first three levels would be amazing, too!

Comix Zone was impregnably hard, but that didn't matter when we were kids because we were stupid. Also, because everything else in the game was so utterly mindblowing. The game was released late in the Genesis' lifespan, was a little on the short side, and the aforementioned difficulty held it back, but the game still managed to be a success, and is among the most beloved of Sega's 16-bit titles. 

I cannot imagine a single living sole who would object to a new Comix Zone. Unless they have seriously have something against people having fun. Maybe a turbo-misanthrope or something. Stick a brand new Comix Zone on XBLA or PSN, and I think Sega will have a hit for sure.

• Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [iTunes link] has reached the top-grossing spot on the store in just two days, which means it's probably taken over the previous record holder. Good news for full-scale gamers: we can expect to see more direct ports from other handheld platforms like the DS and the PSP. Still not sure if GTA is worth the $10? Stay tuned for our review later tonight.
• Sega is releasing an Ultimate Genesis Collection on the App Store, which is more or less an official emulator. You get Space Harrier II with the free download, and then in-game purchases allow you to pick up other Sega games: Sonic for $6, Ecco the Dolphin for $3, and so on. They've released these games separately before, but this will give them a one-stop hub for official versions of older classics.
• Assassin's Creed II Discovery, the iPhone version of the Ubisoft hit, will reappear on the App Store in February at $9.99. In this interview with Appmodo, producer Ben Mattes talks about the iPhone and what Ubisoft plans to do with it.
• Finally, Magnacarta II is an RPG for the Xbox 360 that now has a character guide iPhone app. We've seen PC titles release complimentary apps before, but this is the first instance (I know of) where a console game has supplemented their release with an iPhone guide. Something to keep an eye on.

Due for the App Store next month, the upcoming Sega Ultimate Genesis Collection will bring together some of Sega's existing, disparate releases for the iPhone under one roof and add a bunch more, allowing users to buy Sega Genesis games directly from the app. The first one's free, of course (Space Harrier II), but after that you'll be paying a decent amount for your emulation fix: Sonic is $6, Golden Axe is $5, and Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force go for $3. The variety will undoubtedly grow over time, but we would hope that at some point Sega will offer some sort of discounted megabundle, since you can currently get 49 notable Sega titles for around $20 in the form of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
