Hey guys. I just got my first tank about a month ago. I have always wanted an aquarium, but just didnt really have the money to get started. Now that I have started I am hooked, and i think its worrying my wife & family LOL! The tank I have right now is a 36gallon Bowfront. I got it, the stand, the Filter (Rena Filstar XP2), rock & decoration for $150 used. Since then I have changed the rock for sand, and added my own personal touches. Rich took up the anti-bestiality fight after a number of cases involving sexual activity with animals in recent years, including a Panhandle man who was suspected of accidentally asphyxiating a family goat during a sex act and the abuse of a horse in the Keys. The bill would make such acts a first-degree misdemeanor. Also passed by the House and Senate Wednesday is the so-called “droopy drawers bill” (SB 228), will will force students to hike up their pants while at school.

It seems strange to ban human-animal sex on the grounds that it might lead to dead goats. Presumably the Florida Meat Goat Association is responsible for more goat deaths than the state’s bestiality community. Speaking of which, I think goat meat is underrated. Great in stews and other slow-cooked applications.

This Japanese artist's fishy sense of humour makes us see, with fresh-water eyes, just how deeply weird the world can be

Shimabuku makes art about the little things in life: cooking, fruit and veg, fishing and cardboard boxes have all been subjects in his performances, films and interactive works. The results can be beautiful, like his grainy 8mm films capturing sunrises and sea creatures. Yet he's as much a surrealist trickster as a poet of the everyday. His absurdist skits have included taking an octopus on a tour of Tokyo's star attractions and getting gallery-goers to try and manoeuvre their bodies through tiny elastic bands.

At the heart of the Berlin-based, Japanese artist's work is a knack for making the familiar strange. Like the small-town octopus on a day out in the big city, a mismatch of culture or perception often underpins his projects. In the lengthily titled 2006 performance-video, Asking the Repentistas – Peneira & Sonhador – to Remix My Octopus Works, the artist gets two Brazilian folk musicians to interpret an earlier video of him fishing for octopus in Japan. The result is a bizarre busking session on the streets of São Paulo where the duo sing of the great octopus-catching man they'd like to introduce their sister to. "What's an octopus?" someone asks, as they finish their set.

There's a similarly strange encounter in the film Sunrise at Mt Artsonje, from 2007: a man stands on a rooftop in Korea, holding a silvery fish aloft during a lovely dawn, reflecting rays off its glinting skin to the unknown, and unknowing, city dwellers below. Behind him a crowd has gathered to witness this peculiar ceremony. But rather than being passing observers of some ancient rite, they're the Artsonje Centre's gallery staff, assembled by Shimabuku on the tower's forgotten rooftop to eat breakfast and witness the dawn.

Whether drawing attention to overlooked spaces or using, sometimes literal, fish-out-of-water comedy, Shimabuku invites us to consider with fresh eyes just how deeply weird the world can be.

Why we like him: Shimabuku's Fish and Chips video stages an encounter between the double act that makes up our national dish. In hazy shades of aqua, the film tracks a mottled potato making its slow way to the bottom of the sea where limber translucent white fish glide by. An odder couple it's hard to imagine, but Shimabuku's lingering camera simply asks us to consider the strange alchemy of their forms.

A poet and you don't know it: For Shimabuku, "fish and chips" is the most poetic word combination in English.

Back in March, I speculated about the Boston Symphony Orchestra's programming and leadership options for 2011-12, given James Levine's resignation from the position of music director there. The press releases related to the season just landed in my in-box, and here's the story: it's a season of guest conductors.

They'll be led by (in order) Anne-Sophie Mutter, Sean Newhouse (BSO Assistant Conductor), Juanjo Mena, Kurt Masur, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos (two weeks), Myung-Wun Chung, Ludovic Morlot (two weeks), Jiri Belohlavek, Andris Nelsons, David Zinman, Riccardo Chailly (two weeks), Charles Dutoit, Jaap van Zweden, Stephane Deneve, Kurt Masur (again), Christoph Eschenbach, Juraj Valcuha, Leonidis Kavakos (yes, he is playing and conducting), Christoph von Dohnanyi, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Bernard Haitink (3 weeks).

Whew!

That is quite a line-up, running the gamut from the up and coming (Newhouse, Morlot, Nelsons, van Zweden) to towering figures like Haitink, Chailly, and Dohnanyi. Plenty of tasty programming as well. I'm seriously curious whether the BSO had two schedules planned, one with and one without Levine, or if they had to scramble mightily to figure out who was available when and get them under contract.

Of local interest: Ludovic Morlot, the incoming music director of the Seattle Symphony, is taking the West Coast tour dates, which include two programs in S.F. He'll be leading the already-announced program - another big whew, because I really really want to hear the Carter Flute Concerto.

In any event, the season is a good one, and if I lived in Boston, I'd just get a ticket to everything. Well, almost everything, anyway.

In response to “What bin Laden’s death means to our generation” by Bryden McGrath (May 3)

Osama bin Laden’s death is an important milestone for the United States: the man responsible for 9/11 and other atrocities is now gone. Although the elimination of the world’s most wanted terrorist has brought a sense of closure and justice to Americans, the killing of bin Laden raises more questions than it answers.

The consequences of bin Laden’s death are still largely unknown. What, for example, will it mean for al-Qaeda; for the war in Afghanistan; for our relations with the Muslim world; for our national security; for the 2012 presidential elections; and for Obama’s presidency? While the operation to kill bin Laden was carried out skillfully, we must not obscure the unfortunate reality that it took our country nearly 10 years and billions upon billions of dollars to find and kill one man. There is also the inconvenient fact that Sunday’s mission was a gross, though arguably necessary, violation of Pakistani sovereignty.

We must acknowledge that the death of Osama bin Laden is largely a symbolic victory with limited strategic or tactical significance; the threat posed by al-Qaeda has much more to do with the spread of its ideology than with any one person’s individual leadership. Now is not the time for chest-thumping and high-fiving. It’s time for sober reflection.

Dear Editor,

I am feeling rather upset and disturbed by the death of Osama bin Laden. Most significantly that people around the world are celebrating the DEATH of a human being. This is a repulsive ideology to live by. Does this make our morals any better than those of our oppressors? Terrorism will always be alive when people do not have the right to due process. We sink to the levels of those we fear the most, in our darkest days as a nation desperately trying to defend the stronghold of consumerists and gas-guzzlers.

I don’t understand the world we live in, where murder equals justice. Where freedom in the eyes of many Americans, means killing all those who look differently, or have different spiritual views. Osama breathed the same air, and drank the same water as we do. Have we forgotten that he was also a person? We must remember, someone out in the world lost a best friend. A father. A husband. A leader. A role model. While I do not agree with the agenda of Al Qaeda, I agree even less with the blood thirsty and revengeful people, who perpetrate killing, and suffering.

How long will it take us to learn, that an eye for an eye will make the entire world blind? That the only thing killing does is further perpetrate more killing.

I am disapointed in the government, but even more importantly, in my peers, who believe that the murder of a man across the world, sympbolizes an end to terrorism.

I hope the new president is successful, but I can’t help wondering if a practicing Mormon is the best fit for the UW campus. Students at places like the University of Utah and BYU are not like here. Mormons are in the minority walking through the Quad. His “congeniality” and disclaimers notwithstanding, can he approve of alcohol served on campus? Student drinking issues? Athletes nailing their girlfriends? Huskies beginning the day with a steaming beverage in the coffee capital of the world? Is a practicing Mormon the best person for this type of environment?

Ah, the morning sunrise awoke the student Harry in his bed with a jolt. His fridge beside the bed hummed in anticipation. It was a grand morning with change in the air. The vegetables, fruit and pineapple in the fridge jockeyed to put themselves in full view of the door. This time they would be the ones to lead Harry’s stomach to the promised land. The eggs in the side panel of the fridge door evaluate the candidates below, knowing all would feed the student’s body. But who to choose? All before them are so good and nutritious. A morning’s omelets can take any form but who to choose. This election is important and they all know it.

The red pepper, so bold and colorful, would give a dash of color, diversity even, to this meal. What about chopped onion? Maybe they were coming on too strong, or do they need to be sautéed first? Definitely. Some just need refining. What wonders it would be have the pineapple: so fresh and invigorating. It’s just what Harry needs: a sugar spike wouldn’t hurt.

The candidates have been chosen. The election has ended. All do their part. When the omelet is finished and the meal over, Harry is better off and goes to school. The eggs left in the fridge wonder, “we do this every morning; we hold everything together. Why elect these veggies and fruit? We all just need to go through the motions. These veggies and fruit: why do they care? What’s the fuss?”

There is a reason why so many ASUW veterans back Andrew J. Lewis of the Our Future ticket for President of the ASUW. He’s simply the best candidate. Andrew possesses the political clout that a President needs to effectively voice the concerns of all students to the administration, city, and state legislature. Although he is new to the ASUW, in just one short year, he has managed to secure a resume that makes him an incredibly strong candidate. Currently serving as the Assistant Director for the ASUW Office of Governmental Relations, the lobbying arm for the association, Andrew has proven that he has the advocacy experience and ability to get things done. When the funding for the U-PASS program was being threatened by a proposal in the Seattle City Council to raise the commercial parking tax, Andrew was there to lobby against it. He also helped lower the price of the U-PASS by $5. When landlords took advantage of students who were unaware of their rights as tenants when moving into a new house, Andrew was there to strengthen laws against slumlords and raised awareness of the issue. When the State Legislature proposed a bill that would grant the University local tuition setting authority, Andrew was there to lobby for more student representation on the Board of Regents. In short, whenever there was an issue that came up that affected the welfare of students, Andrew was there. That is the type of President he will be and that is the type of person that us Huskies need to lead our student body into the future.

Andrew has received respectable endorsements from the UW Interfraternity Council, the United Students Against Sweatshops, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and College Greens. He’s also the only candidate that has been covered by popular local media outlets such as Publicola and the Stranger. His experience in the ASUW Office of Governmental Relations, the connections he’s made from his time as campaign manager for Seattle City Councilmember Nick Licata, his leadership experience on the Student Transportation Taskforce and ASUW Legislative Steering Committee, and his ability to captivate an audience when he talks, makes him the ideal candidate for ASUW President. On top of all that, he is also a Truman Scholar.

As a former volunteer, former Board Member, Committee Chair, and Senator for my Fraternity, I’ve devoted the past 3 years of my life to serving students with the ASUW. In that time, I’ve seen my fair share of politicos, ASUW campaigns, and empty promises made by candidates. I’m voting Andrew J. Andrew Lewis is the presidential candidate for Our Future. He has long list of successes, such as winning a Truman Scholarship and securing financial relief for the U-Pass from the City of Seattle. Andrew’s experience dealing with the Seattle City Council and the Washington State Legislature is unparalleled. He has been a strong advocate for student interests, and he will continue to fight for us as President.

Andrew has assembled a highly-qualified team to run with him. Sam Weinstein is running for Vice President with the Our Future ticket. She currently serves on the Board as our Director of Programming, and has the skills necessary to manage the day-to-day activities of the Board of Directors. The city of Citrus Heights and Allied Waste Services will provide a free drop-off for household hazardous waste, sharps and batteries Saturday in the rear parking lot at Sunrise Mall.

I have a renewed interest in Caselnova, the new, seemingly indistinct Italian restaurant on Columbia Street in Brooklyn. Why? Because it has a history I knew nothing about until today. (Also, I've eaten there twice recently, and the food is good, and the brick-oven pizza certainly worthy.)


A framed menu on the wall shows that the eatery is named after an earlier restaurant, one ran by the grandfather and uncles of the current owner. It was on 11 Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook, Long Island.

The old menu has some of the things they're serving at the new restaurant. Though no pizza or panini, two of the new Caselnova's specialties.


Most impressive is the former restaurant's massive liquor and cocktails list, which would be substantial in any era. I wonder what the Caselnova's Honeymoon Cocktail was.

At the bottom, they advertise "Long Island's only Italian Smorgasbord every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The new Caselnova is trying to revive that tradition on Sundays. I haven't tried it out. But I will.

A musician rescues a barmaid and a relationship is forged on a wander round London. It may sound like Before Sunrise, but this is a real achievement on a low budget, says Phelim O'Neill

A suicidal musician Will (Menzies) rescues barmaid Eve (O'Reilly) from a drunken attack from a punter at closing time and, as the night progresses, they wander around London, forging a relationship while taking care not to ask if the other has seen Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise. Made quickly, with extremely limited resources, the result is quite an achievement. London looks good, as do the leads who whip up some credible chemistry, and there's even a decent message to impart. Access to a little more time and money would have solved one or two problems, but there's a rough-hewn charm and clumsiness here that's invigorating.

BAGHDAD — At least 35 people were killed and more than 80 wounded across Iraq on Thursday, most of them in a suicide attack on a police compound, as a wave of bombings and assassinations continued to unsettle the country.

Shortly after sunrise, a suicide bomber rammed a small Hyundai bus packed with an estimated 300 pounds of explosives just inside a protective blast wall around a police station in the Shiite city of Hilla, about 60 miles south of the Iraqi capital, police said.

The explosion killed 29 people and wounded 73 — almost all Iraqi police officers — in the deadliest attack in the country since late March.

Palestinian-UN event sees obstacles galore as children take part in relays and only nine of 1,500 runners tackle entire course

Donkey carts, exhaust fumes and potholes were just some of the obstacles for runners in the Gaza Strip's first marathon.

There were no roads closed, no security tape and no guides, as the route was very simple: start at the border of Israel and stop at the border with Egypt.

The race started at 6am local time on Thursday, three minutes after sunrise, and the temperature was already at 21C. The starting point was Beit Hanoun, in the north-east, from where the runners headed west towards the Mediterranean.

More than 1,500 people took part in the event, hosted by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), which raised $1m (£600,000) for its annual summer camps. The camps are a source of tension between the UN and conservative sectors of Gazan society who object to the mixing of boy and girls, even before puberty.

More than 1,300 schoolchildren ran the marathon in relays of a kilometre at a time, while about 200 ran a half or quarter-marathon. Only nine adult participants ran the whole course – seven Gazans and two UN workers. The winner was Nader al-Masri, 31, from Beit Hanoun who ran in the 5,000 metres at the Beijing Olympics and hopes to run at the London Games in 2012. He clocked two hours and 42 minutes.

By the time the race reached Gaza City, Masri had already developed a substantial lead. The coastal road runs past the harbour where sardine fishermen land their catch. The runners had to negotiate donkeys carts, vans and hundreds of blue boxes filled with fish as the fishermen and merchants cheered.

From the fish market, the runners passed the wasteland that was Yasser Arafat's presidential compound, destroyed by Israeli aircraft and ships in a series of bombings since 2001.

The UN – which provides services for refugees, a majority of Gaza's 1.5 million residents – also attempts to create a sense of normality, particularly for schoolchildren who are unable to leave. Earlier this week, the UN hosted the Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim, who brought a 25-piece orchestra to play Mozart for an audience of 200 children and adults.

Chris Gunness, a UNRWA spokesman, said: "The Israeli authorities have kept many things out of Gaza but we are trying to make sure that the one thing that can get through the blockade is fun. The marathon definitely achieved that not just for the competitors but for the thousands and thousands of onlookers who applauded every runner."

Gemma Connell, the only woman running the marathon and the initiator of the event, finished the course in four hours and 45 minutes.

"I ran through refugee camps, past farmers and street cleaners. They all clapped and shouted: 'Salam Alaikum'. The variety of scenery and the welcome was incredible and there was the unspeakable beauty of the Mediterranean, which gave me the energy to keep going," she said.
