The latest rebranding of the paisley look is more Su Pollard than Syd Barrett

I was recently in front of Su Pollard in the queue at Victoria station. I know, I know, but that's the life of a journalist: one endless round of head-spinning celebrity encounters. I knew it was Su Pollard because she was dressed as Su Pollard – ie, in a manner that made your eyes involuntarily cross. Her tights were cerise, her ra-ra skirt berserk, but not everything she was wearing was as understated as that.

I mention this because Pollard's sense of aesthetics seems to hang over the current vogue for "psychedelic" men's clothing. I love the brief period of British menswear between the smartness of mod and the luridness of flower-power: paisley shirts and vintage militaria. In an America scarred by Vietnam, people took acid and began fomenting plans for revolution. Here, lysergic mind expansion's main effect seems to have been to instil an insatiable desire to dress like a Victorian.

It's a look you can't bring back without looking parodic, which is why what's now touted as the psychedelic look seems to have more to do with Su Pollard than with Syd Barrett: clashing colours and patterns, op-art prints, dip-dye and tie-dye and sweaters described as "blotchy intarsia" – which sounds like something you'd make a discreet appointment at a clinic about, but turns out to be a knitting technique – all thrown on at once. A lot of the stuff is lovely in isolation: one style mag had a photo of a James Long shirt with a beautiful, mind-blowing print and a price to match. But all at once? In the parlance of the era: it's too much, man.

Tyler the Creator touches down to talk goblins, chillwave and the trouble with saying stupid stuff

Tyler Okonma, better known as Tyler the Creator, 20-year-old frontman of Odd Future, the world's most notorious rap group, is having a fit. He was sitting cross-legged on the table of a boardroom in the London office of his new record company, XL – home to Adele, the xx and Dizzee Rascal – but now he's on all fours, and in raptures.

"Oh, my gosh!" he explodes as a bowl of bacon and syrup is placed in front of him. As he smells the food he emits a raspy gasp that sounds vaguely satanic. "Suck my dick," he says to no one in particular, before tucking into his hearty American breakfast. It is 4pm. "Oooh, this is so fuckin' good," he moans in an impossibly deep voice, the one that has earned him a grievous reputation for rapping about murder, rape and all manner of depraved, disgusting acts. He resents being teased about going vegetarian. "Fuck, no," he says, lifting his head from the plate to fix the Guardian with an "are you mad?" stare. "That shit's gay."

You can't really ignore Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. Well, you could, but you'd have to not use the internet and not read any press. They are everywhere. There's a good reason for the ubiquity: OFWGKTA are astonishing, both on record and live, where they approximate the combined imagined force of the Sex Pistols, Slipknot and NWA. At YoYo in Notting Hill last week, London's most glamorous – as well as Adele, the xx, Mark Ronson, and Jamie Reynolds of Klaxons – turned up just to watch OF's in-house engineer Syd Tha Kyd do a DJ set. Tyler and OF mates Left Brain and Hodgy Beats were there, sitting in the background, holding court. Suddenly, Syd cut in an OF track and, out of nowhere, the three jolted into life and began moving manically as though they'd been cattle-prodded across the room. Even the none-more-cool crowd went wild, a scene repeated at two rammed OF appearances at Village Underground and the Camden Crawl.

And you should hear their records. No, you really should. For sustained and diverse brilliance, only the Wu-Tang Clan with their numerous side projects come close, and even they weren't this precocious (Odd Future are aged 17-23) or prolific. Over the past 18 months, the eight rapping and recording-artist members of OFWGKTA (a collective that also includes producers and illustrators), have made more than a dozen albums available for free download. Forget "mixtapes", these are fully realised works; sample-free, each meticulously crafted and worthy of major label release. There are two albums by the Jet Age Of Tomorrow, who specialise in light'n'breezy cosmic lounge funk; two collections of by turns psychotic and psychedelic crunk by MellowHype; two albums of hi-tech latterday G-funk by Mike G; some blunted beats and experimental studio play courtesy of Domo Genesis; even a suite of exquisite R&B; with soul-baring lyrics from Frank Ocean.

Then there are the three Odd Future compilations (The Odd Future Tape Vol 1, Radical and Some OF Shit) that have hinted at what OFWGKTA are capable of, and the two solo works that have made it explicit: Tyler's Bastard and Earl by Earl Sweatshirt. Bastard is ghoulish, but it's also rather gorgeous, with its stark piano lines and pillowy keyboards. There is misogynous loathing of the most extreme kind, and there is suicidal despair, all wrapped up in murderous tunes and expressed in that viscous growl, like Rakim with all the nutritional elements removed. In this writer's opinion it is one of the best rap albums ever made, free or otherwise.

Earl is an even more sick (in both senses) attraction, with its buzzing synths like drills in an abattoir made all the more menacing by the almost facetiously pretty melodies. What impresses most is the witty intricacy of the rhymes as the appallingly articulate (and, it has to be said, furiously funny) rapper, 16 when he recorded it, moves from one repugnant scene to another. The group's totemic outlaw figure, the Sid Vicious to Tyler's Johnny Rotten, only blazingly talented, Earl is currently in a facility for wayward youth in Samoa; chants of "Free Earl!" are commonplace at OF gigs.

"He's so good," says Tyler, who has finished eating and is sitting, legs outstretched, on the table. "I want to be on his level one day. That dude's sick. He has such a natural flow; I don't know how he does it."

What about Tyler: how does he do it? Inspiration for the plaintive atmospheres and mournful violins, he explains, comes from "a bunch of French jazz, old soundtracks, library music, shit with crazy chord progressions and changes in it." He adores Roy Ayers: "Listening to him, it's like, 'How the fuck did he find that?' That shit's tight." There are elements in his productions that rap fans will recognise – the murk of Cannibal Ox, RZA's haunting strings – while others may hear in its billowing synths echoes of chillwave (Toro Y Moi even produced a "chopped and screwed" version of Tyler's track French). "I listen to Washed Out, Beach House and Broadcast," says Tyler. "That's what I'm influenced by. [That's why] the music is a mixture of pretty chords, fuckin' hardcore drums and basslines, and really nice strings."

It was Fader and Pitchfork who first picked up on OF. They were rejected by the hip-hop blogs, and Tyler is less enamoured of the form ("I respect it but I don't really like it"). He seems happier with the notion of OF continuing a legacy of rock radicalism rather than fitting into rap history. When it's proposed that they're signalling one of those seismic moments comparable to Public Enemy in 1987 or Dre and Snoop in 1992, he seems disappointed. When I add names such as the Sex Pistols and Nirvana, making OF part of a bigger continuum, he perks up.

"You mean like how the Sex Pistols and the Doors came along and changed everything?" he wonders. "Oh, I see what you're saying now." He loves Joy Division – Ian Curtis, Hitler and late US comedian Bernie Mac would be his three perfect interviewees – and the idea of Berlin. "I've never been there but I'm expecting it to be fuckin' grimy and scary and dark, but like a really beautiful place once you look past it," he says.

You really couldn't ask for a more pithy encapsulation of the OF aesthetic. But what about those lyrics, Tyler?

"I usually just say what I'm feeling at the time, what I think is cool," he replies. "It's sporadic. It's the first things that come in my head. Like the word 'goblin'," he says, referring to the title of his imminent solo album and first official release. "It randomly came to me. Goblins are little mischievous fucks."

Brought up by his mother, a former social worker, much of the rage in his music is directed at his father, who abandoned him, and at women, for whom he reserves his most chilling put-downs.

"I don't know where that anger comes from," he reflects. "It's just this dark place that I go to when I'm alone. We all do."

Does he not consider the effect his music might have? "I never think of that. I just make shit I want to listen to. Not everyone's got to like it."

Tyler still lives with his mother and he claims she doesn't listen to his lyrics, but she has been seen at OF gigs, getting off on the music. "She just supports her son doing what he always wanted to do, being on the cover of magazines, so she can show her friends," he laughs. "I know if I was a parent and my son was on fuckin' TV, I would look past any negative shit he said and just support my kid."

And yet, for all Tyler's debased language and casual use of the word "faggot" in conversation, he and OF are not feral skatekids rampaging across the States on a diet of pills and "purple drank" cough syrup. He might announce, "I'm bad milk – drink it" on Bastard, and he might lurch around on stage in a ski mask, but actually he's a teetotal non-smoker who doesn't touch coffee.

"I'm a pretty nice dude," he says. "I have fun and people take it the wrong way. Like when I start making fun of people and fucking with them, it's just funny to me."

Is there anything he wouldn't rap about? He pauses for a moment:

"Not that I know of yet."

Has he ever been offended by anything? "Somebody called me a homophobe. I'm not homophobic. I just say 'faggot' and use 'gay' as an adjective to describe stupid shit."

Enter Syd "Tha Kyd" Bennett. She's engineered most of the group's recordings in the guest house at the back of her "upper-middle class" (her phrase) parents' home. Still only 19, she used to be a business student; she also happens to be gay. Does her presence allow the boys to "get away with it"?

"In a sense it does," she says, although she adds that, "Even if I wasn't here, they'd still be saying the same stuff." Asked whether she condones the use of brutal language against women, she replies that she must do; after all, she says, "I mixed it all. I listened to those tracks millions of times."

She argues that "offensive words don't deserve their value, their power", and that they're just words. "He [Tyler] isn't necessarily saying, 'I want to rape so-and-so.' They're just sick, twisted fantasies that he's had, based on girls that have hurt him in the past. A lot of people have sick, twisted fantasies, so why not give them something to relate to?"

She considers her male Wolf Gang members "some of the nicest people you will ever meet. We play, we joke, we have fun. None of us wanted to grow up. This is how we keep our innocence."

Just when you're reeling from the idea of OF as joyous naifs, you read Tyler's Twitter feed, where he's declaring his intention to slap a child at the airport for wearing a Donald Duck hat.

"Yeah, she wouldn't shut the fuck up," says Tyler of his message. "I didn't want her to have it [the hat]. Stupid little bitch. I shoulda socked her ass. See? A six-foot-two black guy talking about socking a seven-year-old Asian kid in the face … that's funny to me!"

By now, I know that most of you who care have already downloaded the leak of Goblin and may even be enjoying it (I know I am); I just had to throw this clip up of Tyler, Hodgy Beats and Syd Tha Kid. Asking Odd Future to censor themselves clearly has hilarious consequences, or at least just very stupid ones. "Look at my hat...it's cool." Meanwhile, somewhere, Diddy is sitting in a Lamborghini forcing himself to nod his head as Tyler chants 'FUCK YOUR RELIGION" over his speakers. It gets no more swag than that.

The MMA Torch Betting and Confidence Pick games featured two championship matchups, neither of which had a defending champion. That was due to the awful championship match performances of the champs and challengers at UFC 128. But rather than dwell into that anymore, I prefer to look forward and commend our readership (that means you, and yes, even you over there in the corner) for their improved performance at UFC 129.

CONFIDENCE PICK GAME RESULTS

So, the Confidence Pick game championship match pitted the top two finishers from the UFC 128 Pool; Shaun Louis vs. Daniel Moore. This one wasn’t close, as Shaun Louis scored 72 out of a possible 78 points to outpace Moore’s respectable 57 point total. Shaun only missed on Ryan Jensen for 4 points, and Charlie Valencia for 2 points. Daniel missed on Yves Jabouin for 7 points, Jason Brilz for 5 points, Charlie Valencia for 4 points, Ryan Jensen for 3 points, and Mark Bocek for 7 points. Congratulations are in order for Shaun Louis!

But it gets no easier at UFC 130, and Shaun will be facing off against one Simon Kerry, who got his entry in to me with less than 15 minutes until the deadline. And that late entry broke the little heart of MMA Torch Editor Jamie Penick, as both Kerry and Penick scored 72 points at UFC 129. Kerry missed on Jensen for 4 points and Valencia for 2 points. Penick also went 10-2, missing on Bocek for 4 points and Roberts for 2 points. Both Kerry and Penick went 10-2, they each got 5 methods correctly, but Kerry got 3 rounds correct whereas Penick failed mightily by getting 2 rounds correct. That’s right, Jamie Penick failed mightily. For shame, boss, for shame.

So to conclude, UFC 130 will see new champion Shaun Louis vs. Simon Kerry. Good luck, boys.

Performer of the Night: When in doubt, praise the boss. El Presidente Jamie Penick won the betting pool by almost 30% over the runner up, and was one tiebreaker away from winning the confidence picks pool as well. Good job boss, how about a raise already, you skinflint. I of course mean that in the nicest way possible.


Goat of the Night: The 13 people who sent in invalid ballots. Maybe you noticed that we had far fewer players than normal. Well, I had to disqualify 13 entries because of irregularities in their entries. From listing the same fighter twice in the confidence picks, to betting $1200, to not identifying WHICH MacDonald in several entries, to still not understanding that all betting entries must have a minimum of 3 straight bets, 13 players turned 30 minutes of prep work into 5 hours of prep work. Not cool.

The shocking part is that there was only one bad entry for UFC 125 when the new rules went into play. That number has gone up slightly every event since, and then it ballooned this time. Weirder yet is that UFC 129 featured the first time when I actually listed all the rules together, so that there would be no confusion about how to play.

Beginning with UFC 130 this month, incorrect entries will be thrown out, as there are far too many following the rules to worry about correcting those who can't. So fair warning moving forward with the game, it will be on everyone to submit a correct entry if they want to take part in the game.

Odd Future members Tyler, the Creator, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, and Syd tha Kid just appeared on BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe's show. As well as goofily chatting about subjects ranging from R. Kelly to (of course) British accents, Tyler and Hodgy performed a new Goblin track, "Analog", as well as "Sandwitches", at the reputed Maida Vale studios. Hodgy and Left Brain (aka MellowHype) also performed a seemingly new song called "65" that might appear on the forthcoming BlackenedWhite reissue.

Odd Future Wolf Gang: A New Movement

By now, you may have heard of the new crew Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, or Odd Future (OF) for short (homepage | blog | youtube), considering all the buzz they’ve been getting these past few months. The maker of this group full of rebels is Tyler the Creator, aka Ace Creator, or Wolf Haley, depending on what type of song he’s featured on. The group includes rappers Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, Left Brain, Mike G, Syd tha Kyd (who deejays for the group, and is currently the only female in OF), Taco Bennet (brother of Syd tha Kyd), Jasper the Dolphin, Jet Age, and the recently signed singer, Frank Ocean. They all reside in Los Angeles and are no older than 25 (ages range from 16-23). Odd Future refuses to be ignored and is reeking havoc over the music industry.



The collective is known for their gory and grimy lyrics about rape, murder, drugs (all members don’t rap about these topics though), and vivid scenarios which may catch you off guard, but will definitely catch your attention. They do what they want regardless of how others feel, make the music that they want to listen to and simply just don’t care. Odd Future first started making music in 2008, releasing self-created albums ever since.



Inside their group, some members have their own projects going on. Tyler the Creator has his albums Bastard and the soon-to-be-released Goblin (May 10). MellowHype members Hodgy Beats and Left Brain have The Dena Tape and YelloWhite. Earl Sweatshirt, currently in a boarding school, placed there by his mother, and won’t be out till he turns 18 years old, has Earl. Domo Genesis has Rolling Papers. Mike G has Ali. Jet Age has Voyager and The Journey to the 5th Echelon. And Frank Ocean just released the hit album Nostalgia Ultra. Albums that feature all the members (except Frank Ocean) are The Odd Future Tape and Radical. All these albums are distributed free on the collective's website.



I am a big fan of Odd Future and have been listening to their music from even before they became as popular as they are now. I would say I was first drawn to Tyler the Creator because his lyrics stood out to me; aggressive and vulgar and non-watered down, he says what he feels. I never heard anything like his lyrics and production. He made a group full of teenagers who were rebellious but also talented. Each of these members has their own style and come together as a whole to make a group that has something different to offer, which is rare.

Since Odd Future has been signed with Record Labels XL and Fat Possum, and are soon to be starting their own label, they’ve been talked about non-stop by the world and other celebrities; including Kanye West tweeting Tyler's video Yonkers, a single from Goblin, and calling it the "video of 2011." Tyler recently tweeted that fans should download all of the back catalog releases from their website before they are taken down, maybe a sign that the group is getting ready to jump to another level in the industry.

Odd Future has performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and the MTVU Woodie Awards and has toured in several U.S. cities and in England. They've also performed at Coachella music festival recently in California with Pharrell Williams (N.E.R.D./The Neptunes) -- another favorite group of mine. Odd Future is exploding.



With features in numerous magazines and websites (funnyordie.com) and a rumored cartoon show on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network), Odd Future has a lot going for them and they appeal to a lot of teenagers and others simply because they're different. I bounced some quick interview questions off of a few of my peers to find out why they like Odd Future so much. Here's what a few of them said:

Picture this: A skinny man with an obsession over an unknown neighbour putting their rubbish in his bin, who lives with a purple puppet lamenting the loss of his architect lover to the land of Maccu Piccu... confused yet?

Village Underground, London

This is the first London gig proper by Odd Future – or Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All to give them their full title. It is also, because of the notorious Los Angeles collective's grotesquely compelling hip-hop with lyrics of homicidal loathing and sexual degradation, the event of the season. The buzz is palpable despite the gig taking place mid-afternoon. Inside, the crowd for this all-ages affair are young – around the same age as Odd Future, which range from 17 to 23 – and a mix of men and women, despite songs containing lurid misogyny and graphic depictions of rape.

First there is a DJ set of pop and R&B; from Syd "tha Kyd" Bennett, the female studio whizz who engineers Odd Future's recordings and who happens to be gay. So maybe they're not the feral hoodlums of internet lore. Still, when the charismatic Tyler the Creator bounds on stage, ski mask on, for Sandwitches, and jolts around manically, joined by Hodgy Beats and Left Brain for a chorus of, "They are them, we are us – kill them all!", you could be forgiven for assuming they were.

The stage backdrop, on the day of the royal wedding, comprises posters of the happy couple, and Tyler encourages the audience to chant some fairly graphic anti-royal sentiments. He climbs on to the speaker stack and dives off, damaging his foot; later, he will go to hospital.

But there is far more to Odd Future than easy thrills. The music is hulking, baroque, and awesomely accomplished; the words are a litany of artful invective and self-mythologising, a new language from a subculture we don't quite understand. Yonkers, with its churning industrial rhythm, is the song of the night from the century's first new pop group paradigm – an affiliation of producers, musicians, video directors and designers of whom only four are here tonight.

Towards the end, Tyler demands his cap back following one stagedive too many and the energy is lost. But two questions remain: are they for real? And how will the hottest band on the planet maintain their unearthly power?

OK, if I'm going to finally break down and buy "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", and I've already got "Relics" and the "Early Singles" disc from the Shine On box (and, FYI, I don't have any of the rest of Shine On)... *How much do I need that 3rd disc of the expanded release of "Piper"??* And, for that matter, how much do I (does anyone?) really need the *mono* "Piper"?? Normally I never really care about mono vs. stereo releases. Whatever is the commonly agreed upon "cannon" version of anything available in both formats is fine by me. So if that's the case, I'm looking at either picking up a cheap (used) single disc of Piper for $7 or $8, *OR* should I shell out for the 3-disc "Piper" only to get these four tracks?? *Are they worth it??* 6. "Interstellar Overdrive (Take 2) (French Edit)" Instrumental 5:15 7. "Apples and Oranges (Stereo Version)" Barrett 3:11 8. "Matilda Mother (Alternative Version)" Barrett 3:09 9. "Interstellar Overdrive (Take 6)" Instrumental 5:03 I've lived my entire life without even the original take of "Matilda Mother", and I think I probably couldn't care less about the stereo version of "Apples and Oranges" (I've got the mono on the "Early Singles" disc, which is plenty fine by me). So I guess it all hinges on those two takes of "Interstellar Overdrive" (and, hell, one is just an 'edit' and not even an alternate!!) -- that, and whether I'm totally 'out to lunch' on the importance of the mono Piper (you'll really have to lobby hard on that one, I'm not easily swayed by the need for both mono and stereo of anything). And for that matter, in a LOT of ways, dollar for dollar, I think I'd be a lot better off finally getting the 17-minute "Interstellar Overdrive" from "Tonite Let's All Make Love in London" (which I've never had, nor heard), instead of the 3-disc Piper (so then just get "Tonight in London", and a cheap one-disc Piper). Oh, and how's "Nick's Boogie"?? - from the London disc?? (That alone looks more interesting than two 5-minute takes of "Interstellar Overdrive" -- another reason to skip the 3-disc "Piper" in favor of "Tonight in London".) Anyone's guidance would be much appreciated. I'm not really obsessive about Floyd (evidenced by the fact I've never even owned Piper once, save for a cassette tape I made of it in college 20+ years ago). I'm pretty ambivalent about Syd, liking a few tunes a whole lot (which I mostly already have) -- and just as many or more not as much.

A self-portrait painted by Pink Floyd founding member Syd Barrett was been stolen

This is my version of a local speciality:  squid ink baguette.  Actually, I am not even sure if this kind of bread was first made in Taiwan, or even in Asia for that matter, but nowadays you can find it in almost any bakery. It is often sold as a sandwich with a seafood filling.

Locally, it is called Squid Ink French Bread and so I have always assumed that it was basically a baguette dough with the addition of squid ink.  It seems that I was wrong, though.  On Friday I found this recipe posted by one of my favourite local bloggers.  I recently used her formula in my Asian Style Pain de Mie post.  Her post includes two formulas: a Taiwanese version of squid ink baguettes and a lean version.  The Taiwanese version includes sugar, butter and vital wheat gluten.  Both recipes use a 70%/30% mix of bread flour/cake flour. 

I made this last weekend but wasn't happy with the result: my hydration was too high and I didn't include enough s&f's with the result that the baguettes flattened out.  The colour wasn't dark enough either.  They looked grey instead of black.  I used the ink sacs from two squid and probably should have used double that amount. 

So I had a fresh go at it again this weekend.  This time I bought a bottle of squid ink.  It was quite pricey but saved me the effort of having to clean the squid myself and I can use it for future bakes or for squid ink pasta.  I stuck to my same lean dough but included 妃娟 suggestion of using 1% Asian basil which she said would suppress the fishy smell from the squid ink.  She recommended using 3%-5% squid ink.  I used 5% because I didn't want to end up with the grey mess that I got last weekend.  I also stuck with 100% all purpose flour.

Overall Formula

• 350g all purpose flour    100%
• 220g water                      63%
• 17.5g squid ink                  2%
• 1.5 g yeast                     0.4%
• 7g salt                               2%
• 3.5g shredded Asian basil 1%

[Hydration = 65% (squid ink is included in overall hydration)]

Poolish

• 140g all purpose
• 140g water
• 1/16 tsp yeast

Allow to ferment for about 12 hours.

Main dough

• 210g all purpose
• 70g water
• 1.5g yeast
• 17.5g squid ink
• 7g salt
• 3.5g finely shredded Asian basil

Bulk fermentation: 3 hours.  Divide dough into three.  Pre-shape. Rest 15 mins.  Shape.  Final proof 1 hour 15 mins on floured couche.  Scoring:  one single slash along the length of the baguette.  Bake at 230 C on a pre-heated stone for 18 mins with steam for the first 10.  Remove from oven.  Allow to cool on wire rack.  Dust with chilli pepper or paprika if you can't take the heat, but I really recommend the chilli as it is the perfect partner to this bread. 

Be warned: squid ink is an acquired taste.  It is not for the faint of heart.  Best eaten as a filled sandwich.  Suggestion: lettuce, crab meat, mayonnaise, squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper and fresh cilantro.

A self-portrait painting by the late Pink Floyd vocalist Syd Barrett was reportedly stolen Saturday (April 9) afternoon from an art exhibition in London.

According to fan site Brain Damage and reported by The Mirror, the painting was taken from London's Idea Generation Gallery, which was holding a 'Syd Barrett Arts & Letters' exhibition. The self-portrait -- which measures 31 cm by 23 cm -- was created sometime between 1961 and 1962 before Barrett joined Pink Floyd, and was given by Barrett to then girlfriend Libby Gausden.

"I am very upset at the theft of the painting, it has huge personal value to me and I am appealing for its safe return," Gausden said, according to The Mirror.

Art site Artlyst describes the painting as being "applied in a heavy impasto in blues, rusts, white and brown tones. It is almost abstract with a stylized rendered portrait of the young Barrett staring face on at the viewer."

A reward of 2000 pounds is being offered for information leading to the painting's safe return.

Now that didn't take long did it?  A mere few hours after the Sens lost their last regular season game, Cory Clouston was fired.  But yet, they resigned Bryan Murray to a 3 year extension.  That little bit right there, puzzles the shit out of me.  First of all, Clouston had a 95-83-20 record with the Sens, and the Sens finished near the bottom of the standings this year.  Bryan Murray said that he felt that they still had a competitive team and should have done better this season.  Is he fucking serious?  Lets talk about who you have traded away...Heatly, Fisher, Kovalev, Kelly, Campoli...it goes on.  I view this as Murray firing Clouston to save his own ass.  Here is my prediction for the Sens next year...after signing Anderson to a 4 year extension, Anderson will start the season with a few wins in a row, and then start shitting the bed.  Just look at his past performances in Colorado.  Always a good start, always a shit finish.  Good luck to you Murray, you fucking douchebag.  You are the one that needs to be unemployed right now.

What the fuck does this have to do with hockey?  Sully and I were just talking about this last night.  OSSTF, my union, has recently announced that they are going to listen to offers to buy out their share of MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment).  Now, keep in mind, that they are the majority shareholders at 66%.  How much will it cost to purchase their share?  For starters, they aren't listening to any offers under $1.5 billion.  Yup, that's right...BILLION.  They are expecting to get somewhere in the neighbourhood of $1.8 billion for their 66% of shares in MLSE.  And that is the funny thing for me...I can't fucking stand the Leafs and how much media attention they garner up here, but it is kind of bittersweet.  After all, every ass in a seat goes towards my pension.  Every $11 hot dog driven down a throat goes towards my pension.  Every loonie dropped into a condom machine for a buckshee budget french tickler in the washroom goes towards my pension.  I should be appreciative of the fact that no matter how shitty they are, they still manage to sell out every game.  And I can guarantee you, that they will not have a hard time finding someone to buy the shares quickly.  None of this confusing nonsense of dealing with municipality bonds and pending sales that last for months.

In the past, there has always been a lower seed that plays out the last games of the season and enter the playoffs on a hot streak, riding a hot goaltender, and they usually make the most noise.  Just look at Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, Philadelphia, and so on in recent years.  However, this year, I am having a hard time figuring out who that team is going to be this year.  Here is my prediction...it could be Buffalo.  Buffalo has the best record in the last 10 games entering the playoffs.  Luckily for them, or maybe not so lucky, they are getting Philly in the first round.  Philly is the polar opposite of Buffalo right now; they have the worst record in their last 10 games entering the playoffs.  If Buffalo is going to make any noise this post-season, they are going to need Miller to stand on his head, and he is fully capable of that.  But of course, the matchup that I am going to be watching is the Boston/Montreal series.  PIttsburgh/Tampa will be another good one as well.  Come to think of it, all matchups in the East look to be fairly competitive.  Unlike the West, where you have a potential Vancouver/Chicago matchup (Chicago still has 1 game to play and could leapfrog LA).  However, Chicago has been Vancouvers nemesis in recent years.  Chicago has had Vancouver's number in recent years, and have even taken it to them a couple of times this season.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

 This past season, Canadian Hockey Teams have donated more than 43,000 meals to homeless shelters.  Instead of just tossing all the leftover and unsold food after each game, it is all donated to homeless shelters.  The concept was though of by Syd Mandelbaum, and steps are taken to ensure that the food is handled appropriately and kept at the right temperature.  As well, the homeless shelter receiving the food items must be inspected and have a good track record before they are selected to receive any food.  In total, the NHL has donated 91,000 kilograms of food (25,000 from the Canadian Teams) to homeless shelters in their respective areas.

I don’t know what the refs saw, but all I saw was two willing combatants.  No reason whatsoever for the extra 2 for instigating and a 10 minute game misconduct for Konopka.  The conspiracy theorists are building their case right now, but everyone had to know that the league was going to be watching this game intently after their last meeting.  But for the refs to blow this call that badly?  I don’t know what to say about that.  Handle this fight like you did the first one; identical 10 minute misconducts and a 5 for fighting.  Done.

[1] Variety [2] is reporting that character actor William Fichtner is in final talks to join District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's second feature Elysium. Fichtner will join Jodie Foster, Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley and Wagner Moura. The actor is probably best known for his television roles: Alex Mahone on Prison Break, Sheriff Tom Underlay on Invasion and Phil Yagoda on Entourage. Fichtner has also appeared in many films, including Heat, Contact, Armageddon, Go, Pearl Harbor, CrashThe Longest Yard, The Dark Knight (as the Bank Manager), Date Night and Drive Angry 3D. Previously: The movie will be R-rated, set 150 years in the future and has the social allegory elements ala District 9. Plot details are minimal, but Blomkamp has described that the story as "totally original," "very violent, and very unique.” He has also said that "It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from District 9, but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm." Damon's character is an ex-con. Moura's villain character is "described as having a crazy sense of humor." Syd Mead, aka the 'futurist' who created many of the most memorable designs for Blade Runner will be designing sets for the project. Elysium is reportedly set to shoot starting late this spring, with production kicking off in Vancouver before moving to Mexico. Sony is set to distribute the film worldwide.
