Robert Pattinson arrived at the airport to catch a flight out of Sydney today. He was in Australia promoting Water For Elephants with Reese Witherspoon and the costars were greeted by a large elephant upon landing Down Under. They later dressed up for that evening's premiere and also made an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. Rob and Reese chatted about the royal wedding and finally settled the debate about Tai the elephant farting on set during their time on the talk show. Attention turned to Rob's Breaking Dawn character when a new still from the movie was released today that features him as Edward with Kristen Stewart as Bella. She's been on the East Coast taking care of their pup, Bear, after attending the Met Gala earlier this week.

Finally finished up with quite the promotional tour, Robert Pattinson was spotted gearing up for an outbound flight from Sydney, Australia on Saturday (May 7).

Fresh off of the Land Down Under premiere of his new movie "Water for Elephants," the Edward Cullen hunk toted his guitar case while ushered into the terminal to prep for the long flight home.

During the course of his overseas travels, Pattinson spoke withBritish radio station Magic 105.4 about filming the recently released circus-based picture, as he said, "It's easy to work with animals! Everything is fresh all the time, whenever there is a wild animal in the room it keeps it exciting."

The British heartthrob added, "Some things were incredibly dangerous! The scene with the Lion, the Lion could get out of the cage, there was no reason the lion didn't eat me."

Water for Elephants enjoyed its Sydney premier tonight, with the 300m red carpet running down Pitt St Mall.

Reese Witherspoon and her co-star Robert Pattinson (Twilight) were mobbed by thousands of fans and hundreds of media types.

Earlier in the day they did Sydney's famous Luna Park, running with the circus theme.

"I think all I can do is stand back and sort of watch it happen because I'm not used to seeing somebody have so many fans," Witherspoon told the press.

"But he's so gracious about it and he's really understanding that people really take the time to stand and wait for him, so he signs every picture and talks to everybody."

Water for Elephants is based on the bestselling novel by Sara Gruen and directed by Francis Lawrence.

The beautiful love story centres around veterinary student Jacob Jankowski (Pattinson), who joins a circus after his parents are killed in a car accident.

He's soon enough in charge of an elephant named Rosie, which helps bring him closer to the circus's star performer Marlena (Witherspoon).

The film's stars got up close with another elephant at a presser today in Sydney. Siam especially was brought in from Terri Irwin's Australia Zoo for the happening.

Witherspoon said she was delighted to have been given the opportunity to visit Australia again.

"I've been here before but I haven't been for some time," she said.

"It's meant a lot to me that Australian fans have come out and seen my movie so I'm excited to actually come out and meet them and be there."

She said Sydney's famous Bondi Beach was at the top of her list of places to visit.

"Last time I was here I got to go to a koala sanctuary and I got to go to the Gold Coast and Melbourne - it was really fun," she said.

"I've never been to Bondi Beach, so I think that'd be fun to check that out.

"I just heard it's fun. I want to go have a beer at the beach."

Insiders tip the movie will likely net over $50 million and is in line to pick up a number of awards.

A special thank you to the good people at 20th Century Fox for helping make tonight possible for my life and media skills students and our team. Also a big thanks for security who helped us get some great photos with the films posters at the conclusion of the evening. My students had a great experience with all the excitement, and they are not likely to forget tonight in a hurry. The popcorn that some of the circus performers handed out to media and the fans was appreciated also.

Legendary showman and circus promoter, Phineas Taylor Barnum, would have been proud of the show that Fox put on in Sydney tonight.

This film sufficiently demonstrates that life is the most spectacular show on earth, as they say in the film's tag line.

Critics find it difficult to separate Mel Gibson's personal life from troubled character.

After release date changes and several other unrelated misfortunes, "The Beaver" is finally bowing in New York City and Los Angeles, with other cities to follow May 20. Starring Mel Gibson, Anton Yelchin, Jodie Foster (who also directed) and Jennifer Lawrence (in a supporting role), the film revolves around Walter Black, a once stellar CEO suffering from severe depression, until he discovers a Beaver puppet he uses as a therapeutic tool to help him reclaim his former self.

So what do the critics think? Of the 70-plus reviews up on Rotten Tomatoes, 51 deemed it "fresh," giving it a 70 percent fresh rating. The most interesting aspect is how each reviewer chooses to address the subject of the "Gibson drama."

The Story
" 'The Beaver' is almost successful, despite the premise of its screenplay, which I was simply unable to accept. I concede it is possible that a man in depression might be able to heal himself by projecting his personality into a hand puppet. I am not sure it is possible, or even advisable, to make a serious movie about that. We go through the movie with Mel Gibson wearing a toothy beaver on his left hand, and that creates a whole lot of disbelief for us to suspend. — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

The Performances
"So what's to recommend in 'The Beaver'? First but not least, Jennifer Lawrence playing Norah. I wish this hadn't been her first released film since 'Winter's Bone'; the role doesn't deserve her. Still, she fills every moment of it — even a manipulative graduation speech — with warmth and graceful intelligence. Then there's the man to the right of the puppet, by turns tortured, morose, animated or charming. When I first met Mel Gibson in Sydney almost 35 years ago, he was a handsome young actor with an open face, a winning smile, an abundant gift and a bright future, although no one could have imagined the extent of his success, or the depth of his fall. How strange that this movie should seem to be commenting on Gibson himself, when it was filmed before his recent public scandals. "Foster clearly knows she's telling a very messy, unmanageable story. The puppet seems to know it too: Sometimes its face looks cute and cheerful; other times, you catch a demented gleam in its eyes. Foster has crept out on a limb here, showing us a grown-up human being who's in terrible pain, and for whom there are no easy answers. And if 'The Beaver' isn't as effective as it ought to be, at least there's integrity in Foster's approach. The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style
"It's hard to imagine anyone other than Gibson, with his wounded gaze and eloquent variations of posture, bringing such resonance to this character. At one point Walter says, 'People seem to love a train wreck, as long as it's not them' — and the real-life overtone is unmistakable. The redemption the movie most strongly suggests is Mel Gibson's own." — Kurt Loder, Reason.com

"Maybe Ms. Foster thought she was doing Mr. Gibson a favor by showing that he could play a troubled man who simply needs help. The problem is that, as an actor, Mr. Gibson doesn't do normal anymore and is at his best playing men on the verge, as in 'Edge of Darkness,' a thriller about a cop hunting his daughter's murderer. It was a suitably blunt character for an actor who has become a blunt instrument and has a lock on loony tuners and angry patriarchs. That should make Walter a fine fit for Mr. Gibson, except that there's no there there to the character, just a puppet with a bad attitude and good timing. A raggedy rage-aholic, it steals the show, handily. Take away his puppet, and the man disappears." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

"Foster merits praise for putting her energy into a movie about mental illness that goes beyond the slickness of 'As Good as It Gets,' in which a happy ending can be spun from a patient's mere promise to take his medication. There is one element of 'The Beaver' that does reflect a Hollywood sensibility: Walter's breakdown never threatens the family financially. The narrative would have more tension if they didn't appear so comfortably padded in a Nancy Meyers-like milieu. (Meyers directed Gibson in 2000's 'What Women Want,' a feel-good movie that now seems very far in his past.) But despite that and the ludicrousness of the puppet prop, 'The Beaver' is serious about portraying mental illness. And whatever your opinion about Gibson the man, so is Gibson the actor." — Mary Pols, Time

Darcy and Jane, two of Shopbop buying’s finest. were in Sydney for Australian Fashion Week. Here, they offer their take on their days Down Under. Favorite shows: Darcy: Lover’s 10th anniversary show at the Sydney Opera House was spectacular! Lots of red lace, blush, ivory, and black. Zimmermann had great prints, cutout details, and standout maxi skirts and dresses. Jane: Dion Lee had amazing printed skirts and a cool color palette. I loved the structured dresses. In all, it was a gorgeous collection. Camilla and Marc took on colorblock with stunning results. Loved the black blazer with neon sleeves! Biggest color story from the week: Darcy: We saw light yellow and pastels, but also a lot of bold colors like deep green and cobalt blue. There were hits of neon and lots of white, too. Jane: I noticed lots of corals, pastel blue, light mint green, loads of cobalt, and bubble pink. Mixing these colors was big, an extension of the current season’s bright separates trend. It's probably not a good idea to put too much stock into rankings of this nature, but in case you need a reason to get all warm and fuzzy about how great Toronto is, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Partnership for New York City have just ranked our humble hometown the second most "successful" city in the world. What exactly does that word mean in this context? For the purposes of this report, success is defined as a mix of financial, cultural and educational opportunity and is measured via 10 indicators, which include transportation and infrastructure, intellectual capital and innovation, and lifestyle assets (i.e. share of green space, skyline impact, etc).

The only city to top Toronto in the 28-city survey is New York. Trailing both NYC and Toronto in the top five are San Francisco, Stockholm and Sydney. TO picked up the most points for quality of living, clean air, skyscraper construction, and sports and leisure. And, just in case you're already dubious of the report's credibility, it's interesting to note that we come third last in the cost of public transportation. Sounds about right...

Despite the high ranking, the authors still deem Toronto a beta city "because it's not considered a part of the conversation with London, Paris, and New York for greatest city in the world," according to an article in the Atlantic about the survey. We do, however, have "all the building blocks of a superlative international city, beginning with smart ideas about sustainability and innovation." Based on those last two qualities, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the data was collected prior to the election of our current mayor. Still it's nice to get kudos once in a while (even if they're of the beta type).
