An unsettling new formula: Eye-rolling, finger-snapping stereotypes.



Donald Trump’s birther battle with President Obama may have captured all the headlines, but the drama that’s really had Trump viewers glued to their sets is the catfight between his Celebrity Apprentice contestants Star Jones and NeNe Leakes.

The show has been a runaway hit for NBC this season, thanks in large part to the sniping between Jones, the embattled former cohost of The View, and Leakes, the former stripper turned Real Housewife of Atlanta. “Bossy, manipulative, conniving,” is what Leakes called Jones during a visit to The Ellen Degeneres Show. And how does Jones feel about Leakes? “I really don’t make a point of spending a lot of time with strippers,” Jones tells a NEWSWEEK reporter over pastries in Los Angeles.

The mud-slinging makes for watchable TV, but it also highlights an unsettling new formula for the reality-TV genre: put two or more headstrong African-American women in the same room, and let the fireworks begin. From Oxygen’s Bad Girls to Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise, the small screen is awash with black females who roll their eyes, bob their heads, snap their fingers, talk trash, and otherwise reinforce the ugly stereotype of the “angry black woman.” Take VH1’s Basketball Wives and Love & Hip Hop, which feature the scorned ex-wives and baby mamas of rich NBA stars and rappers. No episode is complete without a bitchy confrontation or a threat to do bodily harm.

“What I see now on television for the most part is a disgrace, as far as how we’re depicted,” says Diahann Carroll, who was the first African-American woman to star in her own television show, Julia, in 1968. “I won’t and don’t watch it.” Phylicia Rashad, who played Bill Cosby’s lawyer wife in the iconic 1980s comedy The Cosby Show, recalls what the late NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff told her after the show went off the air. “He said it was going to get much worse before it got better in terms of diversity,” she says. “He was right.”

As any fan of Jersey Shore knows, reality TV is an equal-opportunity offender when it comes to stereotyping. “Listen, there are plenty of white women acting a fool on television every night,” says Holly Robinson Peete, the runner-up on last year’s Celebrity Apprentice. “But there’s a balance for them. They have shows on the major networks—not just cable and not just reality shows—about them running companies, being great mothers, and having loving relationships. We don’t have enough of that.”

Reality-TV producers are understandably sensitive about such criticism. “We certainly do not intend for these shows to suggest any one group of people act a certain way,” says Frances Berwick, president of Bravo Media. “With Real Housewives of Atlanta we found a group of women who were actually all friends, and one of them happened to be white. We saw their friendship as something fascinating and relatable and the audience agreed.”

Reality TV’s angry black women may be here to stay. But that doesn’t mean women of color can’t win this competition. The reality show La La’s Full Court Wedding did good numbers for VH1 without playing into stereotypes. And Jones says that despite the battles with Leakes, there’s a method to the madness. “Pitting us against each other is good ratings. So we’re the ones who had to be smart enough to know how to handle it,” Jones says. “From the moment I was cast in Celebrity Apprentice I knew exactly what I was there for. I was there to raise money for heart disease and to publicize my book. Look at every clip of me and you see my book or the symbol I wear for heart disease. Honey, I had a plan.”

First, Little Ricky Santorum, who claims Obama 'Didn't Get Osama Bin Laden!'. He went on the Laura Ingraham show and showed his @ss over Osama bin Laden and who deserves credit for it, particularly to give the kudos to Bush for his torture interrogation tactics. Via Think Progress:

SANTORUM: 9/11 families and everybody else in America should be furious at this president that he's walking abound taking credit for, you know, getting Osama bin Laden. He didn't get Osama bin Laden! ... The president of the United States simply said - courageous act, give him credit for saying yes - but that's all he did, is say yes. He didn't do the hard work. The people he's going after did the hard work. And that is an outrage.

Santorum is referrering to his claim that Attorney General Eric Holder is "going after" CIA agents who used enhanced interrogation tactics under President Bush. But perhaps Santorum is too fixated on his Google problem to remember that Obama said two years ago that he wouldn't prosecute CIA agents who engaged in torture.

Number 2 nominee is Rep. Allen West (R-FL). The batsh*ttery here is hard to beat. At a town hall in Fort Lauderdale he opened his pie hole and a lot of truthiness of epic proportions came out.

Warning the crowd about the economic and national security dangers that China poses to the United States, West declared - twice - that "China is in control of the Panama Canal":

WEST: I had the opportunity to go down to the United States southern command which is headquartered in Miami, Florida. There is a huge threat coming up out of South America through Central America, through Mexico, and into the United States. Iran is in South America. Hezbollah is in South America. I already talked about how China is in control of the Panama Canal. And even about 50 miles away from here in the Bahamas, building a port there. You know, there is some serious threats to our country.

The notion that China controls the Panama Canal is patently false.

There are a number of reasons for the disparity between African-American and white stroke victims, but no one would think it had anything to do with calling 911. A recent study by Georgetown University Medical Center showed that instead of calling 911 during a stroke, most African-Americans call a friend or relative; significantly decreasing their chance of survival.

When researchers asked 100 acute stroke patients, along with those who accompanied them to the hospital, they found that a whopping 75 percent called someone else first instead of 911 when they realized something was wrong. Eighty-nine percent said there was a significant delay in seeking medical attention; while almost half attributed the delay to not thinking their symptoms were serious.

“Every minute, more brain cells die,” said Chelsea Kidwell, director of Georgetown University’s Stroke Center, which conducted the research. Even though the window for treatment can be up to 4 ½ hours for some people, “the time between hitting the emergency room door and getting the medication should be under 60 minutes,” she said.

Researchers were also shocked to discover that few of the patients were aware of the time-sensitive, clot-busting medications at hospitals that could help them during a stroke.

MSBNC reports that a street in New York City near the place where civil rights icon Malcolm X was assassinated may be renamed for his wife, Dr. Betty Shabazz.

The renaming of the Washington Heights street would be symbolic, taking the form of a sign at the corner of W. 165th Street and Broadway, bearing the name "Betty Shabazz Place." The location is directly in front of what used to be the Audubon Ballroom and Theater, where Malcolm X was slain.

The building now houses the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Educational Center, which Shabazz worked tirelessly to create. She died before it was completed in 1997, but her daughters took over and opened the center in 2005.

We're guessing that Dr. Shabazz would be much more concerned with the work the center is doing than with a symbolic naming of a street. Making "Betty Shabazz Place" official -- which will happen if a pending resolution is approved by the City Council -- will really be for the benefit of the community that's there today. As her daughter Malaak told the Daily News, "I hope it's going to inspire young women. We don't have many heroes."

According to the Atlanta Post, “Within the black community, the need seems to be great, but so are some of the names that have answered this call to action.

They’ve pulled together a list of famous African Americans celebrities who have answered the call by being awesome mentors, whether to their future spouses (Michelle Obama), underprivileged kids (Denzel Washington and Colin Powell), or pretty much every woman in America (Oprah). The collection also highlights some under-the-radar leaders, like John Legend. His “Show Me” campaign is designed to shed light on educational programs that are working. And former Essence magazine editor in chief Susan Taylor is behind the National CARES Mentoring Movement, one of the fastest growing coalitions in the country.

Now, if only they could mentor other celebrities, too. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: There are a solid handful of crazy-tweeting, temper tantrum-throwing stars who could use some serious guidance from people who’ve done a better job than they have managing fame and maintaining their sanity. We wonder whether Colin Powell would be willing to adjust the upper age limit for the America’s Promise program . . .

As Detroit struggles to get back on its feet during this recession, it seems that the motor city has yet another problem to face: illiteracy. In a startling report by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund, 47 percent of Detroit residents were found to be functionally illiterate.

When it comes to reading a newspaper, filling out a job application or reading instructions on a medicine bottle, nearly half of the residents just can’t do it. Of the 200,000 adults who were found to be functionally illiterate, the study found that about half of them had a high school diploma or GED, while the other half did not. Out of that same group, only 10 percent are receiving adult literacy classes to teach them how to read, while only 25 percent of adult education programs in Detroit offer services for learners at a low reading level.

For years now, Detroit has suffered with staggering unemployment rates sometimes as high as 50 percent. When the economy does begin to improve and jobs start opening up, the city’s high illiteracy makes one question whether the residents will even be able to qualify for the most basic of jobs.

If the city does not find a way to correct this, the residents of Detroit will continue to be held back regardless of what state the economy is in.

Where's my change at?: A South Carolina man called police after his crack dealer made him pay $60 for $20 worth of drugs. Dexter White called 911 asking for a canine unit, but after explaining to the operator what happened, he decided he just wanted her to send police to help him get the money back. When officers arrived, White was arrested for disorderly conduct. He's lucky that was all they charged him with.

Ciara is known for her six-pack abs and her long legs, but not many people know how she maintains them.  She talked to "Entertainment Tonight" and Women's Health recently about how she keeps a killer figure.

While being honored for her charitable work, teaching young girls about safe sex, at The Candie's Foundation 2011 Event To Prevent Benefit, Ciara dished on keeping a fabulous body and healthy lifestyle. 

When it comes to working out, she usually puts in an hour five to six times a week in the gym.  And she watches her food intake saying,  "85 percent of it is what you eat, and 15 percent of it is how you work out."

And when training, she eats five small meals a day and avoides salt at all costs. "No salt, low salt. It's strict, but when I follow those rules, I see results."

But her biggest body secret is dancing.  She says "Dancing--however you do it, even if it's in your living room--is a great workout."

So there you have it.  If you are still trying to get your summer body together, dance to some Ciara in your living room.
