An interesting benchmark was published yesterday - SPARC T3-Based Systems Deliver Top-Notch Cryptographic Performance:

The SPARC T3 processor running the IPsec AES-256-CCM can operate at near-line speed over a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) network and demonstrates more than 2x the throughput of the latest generation Intel Xeon processor. Moreover, with dedicated hardware support for encryption/decryption for AES and eleven other ciphers, the SPARC T3 processor is 12 times faster than the Intel Xeon processor for in-memory RSA decryption.

Some key takeaways from this benchmark:

• The SPARC T3 was able to decrypt AES with 9,900 Mb/s at 36% CPU utilisation and encrypt the same amount with 39% utilisation
• The Xeon 5670 was able to decrypt AES with 4,400 Mb/s at 85% CPU utilisation and encrypt 4200 Mb/s at 77%
• For RSA decrypt operations T3 was able to execute 79536 ops per second whereas the Xeon 5670 was just able to execute 6472 (six thousand four hundred seventy two - no typo) operations per second
• The benchmark run with a single processor T3-1 against a dual XEON 5760 system. However the benchmark was executed on a processor set just consisting out of a single proc to have a fair comparison

I think this benchmark is a good example why a dedicated crypto accelerator has it's advantages over a command set extension over crypto. The T3 can encrypt and decrypt a 10 GBit/s at almost line speed and after sinking and sourcing traffic at this speed and encrypting it, it has still 64 respectively 61 percent of the CPU left for other tasks. With an Intel CPU you have 15 respectively 23 percent CPU left when doing the same tasks for half the bandwidth of the T3. This difference doesn't surprise me: With T3 the whole encryption process is offloaded, whereas the encryption process is just supported by special commands on Xeon which are part of the normal pipeline flow. Of course everything that happens in-pipline is utilizing the pipeline.

Derby 10.8.1.2 is a new feature release, the first one in the 10.8 series. The highlights include:

• Automatic calculation of index statistics: In earlier releases, index cardinality statistics had to be updated manually (for example by calling the SYSCS_UTIL.SYSCS_UPDATE_STATISTICS system procedure) if they got out of date. Otherwise, the optimizer might choose suboptimal, poorly performing query execution plans because of the outdated information. This typically happened if one of the tables accessed in the query had grown or shrunk significantly after the index cardinality statistics were calculated initially. As of this release, Derby will recalculate the statistics if it detects that the size of the table has changed so much that the statistics are no longer usable.
• JDBC 4.1: The early access builds of Java SE 7 (available for download here) have added new methods to many of the interfaces in the java.sql and javax.sql packages. This Derby release implements all of these methods so that you can try them out.
• Improved interrupt handling: Earlier releases of Derby didn't handle interrupts very well. If a user thread was interrupted while performing a database operation, it could often end up crashing the database engine and require a reboot of the database. Starting with this release, interrupting a user thread shouldn't take down the entire database. The documentation has also been improved by clarifying which behaviour to expect if a thread is interrupted.
• XML operators out of the box: Older releases of Derby required some work setting up your environment before you could use the XML operators (XMLEXISTS, XMLPARSE, XMLQUERY, XMLSERIALIZE). In Derby 10.8, the implementation of these operators has been made more portable and should work out of the box on most implementations of Java SE 6 and newer.

The release also contains many bug fixes and documentation fixes, as well as some performance improvements. As always, make sure that you read the release notes before upgrading to see if any of the changes could affect your application.

To address an issue in the specification, the JSR 334 expert group has decided to ban the combination of diamond together with explicit constructor type arguments. For background, a constructor can have two sets of type arguments. In a parameterized class, constructors can have type arguments corresponding to the class's type parameters. This is the common case and the type arguments appear to the right of the class name and "new" as in "new ArrayList<String>()". In addition, if a constructor declares its very own type parameters (which can be done whether or not the enclosing class is parameterized), then those type arguments appear between the "new" token and the class name as in "new <Integer> ConstructorWithTypeParameter(Integer.valueOf(42))".

As with generic methods, the type arguments of generic constructors are usually inferred and not explicitly passed. However, generic constructors are much less common than generic methods.

After the specification change, using diamond to infer the class type parameters but explicitly passing the constructor type parameters is forbidden. However, the other three combinations of explicitly passing type arguments versus inferring them are supported, as shown in the table below.

The substitution that was used to formally describe the semantics of diamond did not fully propagate constraints if there was a typing relationship between the type parameters of the constructor and the type parameters of the class. Lifting the imposed restriction on the banned combination of explicit and inferred type arguments can be revisited in future work in the context of broader type inference getting added to the Java language.

Since generic constructors are so uncommon, adding this restriction about combining them with diamond should have little effect to most programs. For example, none of the uses of diamond in the JDK had to be updated as a result of this change. A changeset implementing this specification change has been pushed and will appear in subsequent promoted builds of JDK 7.

Server virtualization doesn't kill storage.  People kill storage.  That's all I'm saying.

I get hot under the collar when I hear people say things like "server virtualization increases storage requirements by huge amounts."  They slam server virtualization with this comment, as if changing a server from being a physical one to being a virtual one somehow magically increases its size.  They list it as a reason that you shouldn't use server virtualization.

So I got a little irked when I heard the CEO of Symantec, Enrique Salem, say something like it in his keynote this week at Symantec Vision. (It was a great show, by the way.)  "Server virtualization increases storage use by 200% - 800%," he said.  When we had the media Q&A; with him, this was the first question out of my mouth.  "What about moving a server from being physical to being virtual increases storage requirements?"  I asked a similar question of every other Symantec person I met with that day, as well as when I met VMware CTO, Steve Herrod.

In retrospect, I was probably a little hard on Mr. Salem during my Q&A.;  Even Steve Herrod from VMware verified that the typical VMware customer does see such a storage explosion.  However, I still stand by my statement that this is not VMware's fault.  Moving to VMware does not cause your storage to magically explode.  Moving to VMware probably does "help" it happen, though.  Here are my thoughts on that.

VMware's design actually reduces storage use

The average virtual machine image (VMDK in VMware speak) is significantly smaller than the smallest disk drive you can buy to put into a server.  The smallest hard drive I can configure in a Dell server is 250 GB. You can create a thin-provisioned VMDK and it will consume only as much storage as it needs to, which is going to be far less than 250 GB.  I don't know Hyper-V as well as I do VMware, but I'm guessing it's similar.  I would also say that moving servers into VMware/Hyper-V means that you can put all those very duplicated images on a single storage volume that supports deduplication, removing that huge storage explosion.  You can't do that if you're using physical servers with discrete hard drives.

Many people buy their first "real" storage array when they buy VMware/Hyper-V

They may feel that this "forces" them to increase their storage costs, because they're used to just buying discrete hard drives -- often with no RAID or monitoring.  They then blame this increase in cost on VMware/Hyper-V.  I don't buy that either.  First, they didn't have to do that.  They could have bought a nice HP/Dell/IBM server with internal storage and run VMware on that.  The decision to buy a storage array is a second decision.  Second, if VMware "forces" them into the 21st century as far as storage management is concerned, so be it.  It's about time they have real storage.

Server virtualization often means a lot of test/dev VMs

This was Mr. Salem's point.  VMware/Hyper-V makes it really easy to have many, many different images of different configurations, so people create dozens or hundreds of VMs in their test/dev environment, and that causes a huge increase in storage.  I again say that you could continue to do in your dev/test lab whatever it was you did before you had VMware/Hyper-V, so it isn't VMware/Hyper-V's fault that you lab now uses 10 times more storage than it used to.  But it sure does make it easy, though, doesn't it?  I would also say that this increase in storage is accompanied by a huge increase in usability of the lab.

VM sprawl is evil and real and it eats up storage

This was the universal comment from most everyone I talked to.  When we step out of the test/dev world, it is a reality that when you are buying physical servers, there tends to be much more of an approval process.  When all you have to do to create a new server is click the right button on your mouse, you tend to create new "servers" very quickly.  Next thing you know, you have a whole lot more servers (and images of Windows/Linux) than you ever would have had if you had physical servers. VM sprawl is real, and it should be addressed with process and procedure.

VMware and Hyper-V are not the problem here.  What we do with it is the problem.  Yes, they make it much easier to do dumb things like VM sprawl, but blaming VMware and Hyper-V on your storage explosion is like blaming Ferrari for your tickets.  Just saying.

This is not another FAQ, but I do want to let you in on a few things:

1. I have no idea when the next version of Windows will ship.  Other than two press releases from January 2011 - http://www.microsoft.com/Presspass/Features/2011/jan11/01-05SinofskySOC.mspx and http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2011/jan11/01-05SOCsupport.mspx - Microsoft has not made any public announcements about features or release dates.  Windows 7 is not yet two years old (official GA date - October 22, 2009) and customers are still migrating from Windows XP.  I don't care what you may have heard, read in the press, or how many websites you visit that purport to provide "Windows 8" info, the fact remains that if it's not on our public website - http://www.microsoft.com - IT IS JUST SPECULATION.  I will go ahead and let you know now that I don't have any info on the next versions of Windows Server, Office, SharePoint or Exchange - please don't ask me or anyone else at Microsoft to even take a guess.  Trust me, when info becomes available, there will be an official announcement,  it will be all over our website and Microsoft employees won't shut up about it.
2. Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation - unless we have PUBLICLY AVAILABLE info to back up what we say.  When a Microsoft employee tells you that they have no info to share about a particular topic or product, please believe them.  As a salesperson, I want you buy and use everything we sell.  That being said, all Microsoft employees risk getting fired if we disclose confidential information or provide info that can't be supported.  I make a lot of money and I'm not trying to lose my job.  Who would pay for my shoes?
3. Should you buy and deploy the current versions of our products or wait until the next version ships?  Buy now with Software Assurance, always buy now ;-)

I recently put together an “Unhealthy Monitors” report for an OpsMgr Administrator to see which Monitors are causing the most state degradation in the environment.  This report lists all monitors that have objects in an unhealthy state, so we can see which monitors have the most unhealthy objects.  Each monitor can be expanded to see which objects are unhealthy. 

This does not show us which Monitors are generating the most State Changes, just which ones have the most objects which are currently unhealthy.  The Monitors at the top of the list would generally need to be tuned (reconfigure thresholds, etc.) or disabled (Administrator is not concerned with the issue), or a systemic problem in the environment needs to be fixed.

NOTE:  This report uses the Operations Database instead of the Data Warehouse….in order for it to work, you must create an SRS Data Source for the OpsDB…Kevin Holman has instructions for this here.

The report doesn’t take any parameters…just import into SRS and run it.

The output will show the Monitor name, Target class, Management Pack name, and the number of objects that are not in a healthy state:

 

Each Monitor in the list is expandable to show a list of objects that are in an unhealthy state…the list shows the Path, Display Name, Health State, and Last Modified time (when it last changed to an unhealthy state):

 

The table format of the report makes it very easy to export to Excel, where you can do filtering and sorting:

A scary development in rootkits:

Rootkits typically modify certain areas in the memory of the running operating system (OS) to hijack execution control from the OS. Doing so forces the OS to present inaccurate results to detection software (anti-virus, anti-rootkit).

For example rootkits may hide files, registries, processes, etc., from detection software. So rootkits typically modify memory. And anti-rootkit tools inspect memory areas to identify such suspicious modifications and alarm users.

This particular rootkit also modifies a memory location (installs a hook) to prevent proper disk access by detection software. Let us say that location is X. It is noteworthy that this location X is well known for being modified by other rootkit families, and is not unique to this particular rootkit.

Now since the content at location X is known to be altered by rootkits in general, most anti-rootkit tools will inspect the content at memory location X to see if it has been modified.

In the case of this particular rootkit, the original (what's expected) content at location X is moved by the rootkit to a different location, Y. When an anti-rootkit tool tries to read the contents at location X, it is served contents from location Y. So, the anti-rootkit tool thinking everything is as it should be, does not warn the user of suspicious activity.

Wir sprachen mit dem lokalen System Management Summit unsere deutsche Kunden und Partner an, die ihre Systeme effizienter managen, ihre IT-Ressourcen besser einsetzen wollen. Wir zeigten die Neuigkeiten der System Center Produkte und der Microsoft Virtualisierungslösungen. Darüber hinaus stellten wir Ihnen die Microsoft Private Cloud-Strategie und neue Cloud-Lösungen wie Windows Intune für die Desktopverwaltung vor.

Zudem präsentierten spezialisierte Microsoft-Partner sowohl durch eigene Vorträge als auch in einer Ausstellung professionelle Lösungen, die das Microsoft-Angebot sinnvoll ergänzen, und stellten Beispiele und Erfahrungen aus der Praxis vor. „Für uns ist der lokale System Management Summit eine ideale Plattform, um den IT-Experten unser Angebot als Ergänzung zu Microsofts System Center vorzustellen“, erklärte Matthes Derdack, Gründer und CEO von Derdack.

Mit gut 300 Teilnehmern, ausschließlich Fachleute aus dem Bereich System Management, war die Veranstaltung ausverkauft und hatte 50 Prozent mehr Teilnehmer als die zwei Veranstaltungen in Köln und München im vergangenen Jahr, die aber ebenfalls beide ausverkauft waren. „Unsere Kunden und Partner nehmen das Thema System Management sehr ernst. Und das rasante Wachstum in den Teilnehmerzahlen zeigt, dass wir das passende Angebot mit System Center haben“, sagte Ansgar Heinen, Produkt Manager System Center von Microsoft Deutschland und Verantwortlicher für den deutschen Summit. „Entsprechend planen wir für 2012 die Fortsetzung. Für Details ist es aber derzeit noch zu früh.“
