The Australian-born critic Shane Danielsen wrote an amusing piece for Indiewire about this year’s Berlin Film Festival. He compared the smell outside some of the screening rooms to that of sperm. I remember it being stinky, but not that particular odor. Shane is, however, a reliable source. 

One of two things at Cannes that really gets on my nerves is the smell inside the press screenings, especially those that take place at 8:30 a.m. The 5000-seat theater is packed. No pun intended, but these projections are the pits, the lower depths of hygiene. Maybe it’s time constraints or perhaps cultural practices, but you pray for the manna of soap and toothpaste. Attendees tend to be part of the Great Unwashed; an asthmatic who showers once a day, I feel like one of the huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.

The other annoyance is of a different vein: the pretense of colleagues who don’t refer to films by name, but by director. For example, Melancholia is spoken of as the von Trier. Then there are the Almodovar, the Bilge Ceylan, the Kim Ki-duk, and the van Sant. They don’t call some of the super lightweight movies showing this year the Rob Marshall or the Jodie Foster: in the context of Cannes, they get names: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Beaver, respectively. 

Like almost every critic, I’ll see the first group, the the films, anyway; it’s almost a necessity. The ones that I’m most looking forward to, however, lie somewhere between those and the films that are called by their titles, if that. These are works by directors much lower on the festival hierarchy and not yet considered to be of the status, or lesser-known filmmakers whose names and titles are both unknown, but whose previous efforts have shown promise. Some of them are the possible surprises that I’m most looking forward to seeing, even if I have to hold my nose in the process.

Water for Elephants enjoyed its Sydney premier tonight, with the 300m red carpet running down Pitt St Mall.

Reese Witherspoon and her co-star Robert Pattinson (Twilight) were mobbed by thousands of fans and hundreds of media types.

Earlier in the day they did Sydney's famous Luna Park, running with the circus theme.

"I think all I can do is stand back and sort of watch it happen because I'm not used to seeing somebody have so many fans," Witherspoon told the press.

"But he's so gracious about it and he's really understanding that people really take the time to stand and wait for him, so he signs every picture and talks to everybody."

Water for Elephants is based on the bestselling novel by Sara Gruen and directed by Francis Lawrence.

The beautiful love story centres around veterinary student Jacob Jankowski (Pattinson), who joins a circus after his parents are killed in a car accident.

He's soon enough in charge of an elephant named Rosie, which helps bring him closer to the circus's star performer Marlena (Witherspoon).

The film's stars got up close with another elephant at a presser today in Sydney. Siam especially was brought in from Terri Irwin's Australia Zoo for the happening.

Witherspoon said she was delighted to have been given the opportunity to visit Australia again.

"I've been here before but I haven't been for some time," she said.

"It's meant a lot to me that Australian fans have come out and seen my movie so I'm excited to actually come out and meet them and be there."

She said Sydney's famous Bondi Beach was at the top of her list of places to visit.

"Last time I was here I got to go to a koala sanctuary and I got to go to the Gold Coast and Melbourne - it was really fun," she said.

"I've never been to Bondi Beach, so I think that'd be fun to check that out.

"I just heard it's fun. I want to go have a beer at the beach."

Insiders tip the movie will likely net over $50 million and is in line to pick up a number of awards.

'Akira,' the long-in-development live-action version of the landmark 1988 anime film and comic book, might finally have a star in Keanu Reeves.

He's been in talks with Warner Bros. to play gang leader Kaneda in the post-apocalyptic classic.

The studio has wooed a wide variety of actors, including James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Robert Pattinson and Michael Fassbender, an Anglo-centric list that has prompted protests from some fans.

Concerns about casting an Asian or Asian-American lead to stay true to the project's Japanese roots and setting might be assuaged with Reeves on board; the Hawaiian-born actor is part Chinese. (The same reasoning that makes it OK -- or not, depending on your point of view -- for Johnny Depp, who's got some Cherokee blood, to play Tonto in the upcoming 'Lone Ranger' film.)

Marc Shmuger, former co-chairman of Universal Pictures, is launching Worldwide Produce next month.

Tom McNulty, who had worked at Shawn Levy's 21 Laps, is Shmuger's first hire. He'll be president of the production company.

"He's just a really savvy producer with great taste and really impressively commercial -- just really spot-on commercial instincts," Shmuger told TheWrap. "I really am looking forward to the ride ahead."

Stephen Collins, best known as benevolent Reverend Eric Camden on '7th Heaven,' has just joined the cast of the Farrelly brothers' 'The Three Stooges' as the villainous Mr. Harter.

He and Sofia Vergara of 'Modern Family,' will play "a charming couple that adopts the slap-happy trio for less than benevolent reasons."

He joins a TV-centric cast with 'Will & Grace's Sean Hayes, 'MADtv's' Will Sasso, 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' star Larry David and 'Glee''s Jane Lynch.

Collins recently co-starred as Julie Benz's boss, Dr. Dayton King on 'No Ordinary Family.'

The film, which has a reported budget of $30 million, will be filmed in three 27-minute segments. Production is scheduled to begin in May for a 2012 release.

Doesn't it seem like just about every film vacation ends in gore and violence? In our experience, vacations usually end with margaritas.

'Retreat,' the latest entry in the vacation-terror genre, comes courtesy of first-time director Carl Tibbetts and stars Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton as a couple who travel to a remote island to put some space between themselves and a personal tragedy. Their escape quickly becomes more than they bargained for when an injured man, played by soon-to-be-ubiquitous Jamie Bell, washes ashore with news that a deadly plague has swept across Europe.

Sony recently bought the North American distribution rights, and the flick will be sold to foreign distributors later this month at the Cannes Film Festival. The studio has not yet established a release date.

'National Treasure' star Nicolas Cage will not be charged with domestic abuse following a drunken night in New Orleans that saw the Oscar-winning actor allegedly grab his wife Alice during verbal argument in front of a taxi driver.

"The evidence did not support charging Cage with a crime," the New Orleans District Attorney told TMZ. Additionally, the actor's wife reportedly declined to press charges and denied any physical contact.

Cage taunted the police before they took him into custody in the early hours of April 16. He repeatedly refused their requests to go home, asking, "Why don't you just arrest me?" The officers eventually obliged, and Cage was arrested for disturbing the peace and domestic violence. He spent several hours in jail before Dog the Bounty Hunter posted his $11,000 bond. (Really.)
