During a recent interview, AT&T’s senior vice president of mobile devices, Jeff Bradley, shed some light on what his company’s future handset plans look like. Android’s U.S. market share is continuing to grow at the expense of RIM, Microsoft, and Palm, according to a new report from comScore that took a snapshot of the mobile phone market during the March quarter. The report found that Android powered 34.7% of all U.S. smartphones, up 6% from December 2010. RIM’s BlackBerry OS market share fell 4.5 points to a 27.1% share of the market, while Microsoft’s Windows and Palm’s webOS each saw a 0.9 percentage point decrease. Microsoft has confirmed that its Windows Phone 7 platform on Friday suffered its second major outage this week. Early on Friday, users began reporting that they could not access Xbox LIVE services from their Windows Phone 7 devices. BGR had independently confirmed the issue on two separate devices, and now Microsoft has acknowledged the outage via its official Windows Phone support team Twitter account. “It’s a new issue that users are unable to access Xbox LIVE features at this time,” a Microsoft official posted to the Twitter account. The Apple iPad 2 was greeted by crowds during its debut in China on Friday morning, according to AppleInsider. Customers began lining up at about 5pm local time on Thursday, and there were hundreds of people in line by the time the store opened. Here’s a head-scratcher. We’re hearing rumors that Sprint’s HTC EVO View 4G tablet will not, repeat not, ship with the snazzy HTC Scribe stylus. A report from Engadget on Friday indicated that the HTC Flyer tablet — the EVO View 4G’s generic sibling — will include HTC’s digital pen unless the device is purchased from Best Buy. Our own source, however, has indicated that Sprint’s training materials list the EVO View 4G’s Scribe stylus as being “sold separately.” The pen is one of the EVO View 4G’s differentiating features and, if the exclusion turns out to be true, would be a major disappointment. MKM Partners analyst Terry Kuittinen on Friday issued a note to investors reiterating a Buy rating on Motorola Mobility stock, setting the firm’s price target at $35. Kuittinen states that Motorola will likely see success with British carrier Orange, which launched Motorola’s new ATRIX smartphone ahead of upcoming competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S II and the LG Optimus 2X. Poor performance in Greece, Romania and the US caused Deutsche Telekom to report first quarter net profits of €480 million, down 37 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Nevertheless, the company attempted to reassure jittery stock markets by confirming it is still on track to generate EBITDA of more than €19 billion in 2011.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann said in a statement that the company remains resolute despite the disappointing results. "We have done our homework correctly. The course has been set for the Group's realignment, and we intend to pursue this course systematically. The figures for the first quarter show, however, that there are further challenges ahead."

While the company was impacted by troubles outside its home market, overall damage was limited by cost cutting within its German fixed-line operations and over-performance from mobile data revenues. The company admitted that Germany now contributes more than half of the company's revenue and about two-thirds of earnings. It also confirmed plans to invest €10 billion to improve its network and infrastructure in Germany through 2012.

Of note, the company said marketing campaigns geared toward retaining and attracting high-value contract customers in Poland and the Netherlands had been successful, but expensive and damaging to its first quarter EBITDA. It also revealed that smartphones accounted for more than 40 per cent of all handsets sold across Europe, twice the amount of 12 months ago.

France Telecom and KPN reported similar lacklustre results.

The bombed-out share price of Cable & Wireless Worldwide (C&W Worldwide) could attract bids from larger mobile operators wanting to offload their surging data traffic to the struggling company's extensive fibre network.

According to a Reuters report, possible bidders include Vodafone, O2, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, each of which could take advantage of C&W Worldwide's fibre infrastructure, relationships with multinational companies and its substantial unused tax allowances.

Shares in C&W Worldwide have been trading on the London stock exchange at historic lows; the company issued two profit warnings in the past eight months amid growing worries over whether its existing management can implement a turnaround.

A banker familiar with the sector told Reuters that C&W Worldwide ultimately wants to be acquired by one of the larger operators. "And its valuation is getting more attractive as the stock comes down, but (I believe) the company needs a good year of solid results before it is a credible target."

However, Investec analyst Morten Singleton suggested that an operator should be brave and make a move for the company now. "I see no reason why an acquirer would not be interested in it now, given where the share price is trading, because I believe fundamentally the enterprise value of the business at the moment is less than the assets are worth," he said.

"There is an inevitability about a degree of consolidation in the U.K. and this would be an obvious candidate. For something like Vodafone, it makes a lot of sense," he added.

C&W Worldwide, which is valued at around £1.25 billion, became independent from C&W Communications in 2010. It provides voice, IP and data services to multinational firms and governments.
