Absentia, a feature-length film that was funded in part by Kickstarter, has been picked up by Phase 4 Films for stateside distribution. Its VOD premiere is set for July 1, with a DVD release to follow later in the year. I really don't know much about Absentia, except that it stars Doug Jones and has a fairly creepy trailer (which can be seen below). It kind of gives off a Tale Of Two Sisters vibe, and that makes it worth a look in my book.

Things seem to be heating up for Powers since last December, when writer Brian Michael Bendis announced that Charles Eglee (Dexter, The Walking Dead, The Shield) had come on board to pen and produce the adaptation of his cult comic. With Super 8 star Kyle Chandler in talks for the lead, FX has cast Charles S. Dutton as Captain Cross, head of a homicide police department where detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim investigate crimes involving those with superpowers. Based on the popular comic by Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, Powers is finally being given a shot at the small screen after Sony optioned the rights for a feature film version almost 10 years ago, which never came to fruition. Powers has been in publication for more than a decade, producing a dozen graphic novels and more than 60 issues.

Though there's already a bit of a stink around the upcoming X-Men: First Class thanks to a crappy marketing campaign don't expect any of that to stick to Michael Fassbender. Done with his part as Magneto on X-Men, Fassbender is currently at work on Prometheus with Ridley Scott and it appears that his next film after that is sliding into place.According to Variety Fassbender is currently in talks to star in art heist flick Trance for director Danny Boyle. Shooting is scheduled to start in September but will be interrupted by Boyle's previous commitment to direct the opening ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012, meaning the film would not be ready for release until 2013. 'From the director of Man on Wire' is all a film needs to get my attention, and Project Nim definitely does not look like it is going to disappoint. The film, which explores the relationship between man and other species through the lens of a loose experiment designed to teach sign language to a chimp, premiered at Sundance to very good notice. Now there's a trailer, and I think any of you that watch it will be ready to see the film afterward. At Sundance David reviewed [1] the picture, saying, There are moments of absolute magic in Project Nim, and most of them involve Nim himself: his “conversations” with humans, his strange habits and mannerisms, his inherently adorable nature in his youth. And the movie obviously asks some big questions about the differences between man and animal, and where the line between species really is. Questions about the nature of language are implicit here, too, and the filmmaking by James Marsh -- working in a mode that is similar to Man on Wire, if using a very different sort of energy, looks clear and conducive to those questions. Thor, the latest adaptation of a Marvel comic book, had a pretty high hurdle to get over. Not the typical superhero story, the idea of putting a God at the center of a film for audiences to connect with was a tricky one. Bringing Thor's world and the characters within it to life and shedding the apparent hokeyness that comes with that was even trickier. And so it was handed to Kenneth Branagh, a director known for bringing iconic characters to the screen, to undertake such a task. The level of success is unfortunately up and down, and Thor ends up being a comic book adaptation that runs somewhat stagnant with fleeting moments of encouragement shining through. Well that was quick. Only two days after Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle's new project was first announced, we now have the first casting news for it, and it's a damn good start. THR & Variety are reporting that Michael Fassbender is in talks to join the cast of the project now officially called Trance, an edgy art heist thriller that's actually a remake of a 2001 British made-for-TV film called Trance. This is the new project from Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) that he'll shoot later this year, then finish editing after he works on the 2012 Olympics during most of next year. Did not see this coming, but I'll be damned if it isn't great news. THR is already reporting casting rumors for Quentin Tarantino's upcoming spaghetti western Django Unchained, which was revealed earlier this week. Apparently Tarantino wants Will Smith to star as Django, a freed slave in the Old South who is trained by a German bounty hunter to save his wife.
