Two Radically Different Approaches to Packaging Before we investigate the actual manufacturing process, let’s consider the differences between a folding carton and a set-up box. At first glance, it may be difficult to tell them apart. The base and lid on the left look pretty much the same as the boxes on the right. Take a closer look, however, and you’ll see that the panels on the box on the left have been folded over to make up the box. The lid on the right is made from a single piece of chipboard, cut-scored to fold, with the sides held together by tape. The sample on the left is a folding carton; the one on the right is a set-up box. Set-up boxes have been in use since the late 1800’s. Today, there are many variations of possible styles, some of which may be seen on the following pages. For our purposes, we will describe the manufacture of the most basic style, the wrapped set-up base and lid. Non-bending chipboard, the material most often used for rigid boxes, may range from 040 (40 thousandths of an inch) to .080 or more. Compare this to folding cartons, whose stock may vary from .010 to .036. Note that there are many types of substrate used by folding cartons depending upon the end use of the packaging, but most set-up boxes use chipboard. This is because in set-up box manufacturing, the finishing is done to the wrap, not the substrate. The exception is when a material called white vat-lined chip is used. In this case, the chipboard is lined on either one or both sides with a white coating made from newsprint, giving the box a more finished appearance. This stock works especially well if the interior of the box is to remain unfinished, or unlined. By contrast, Image 5 shows some samples of lined boxes. The goal in set-up box manufacturing is to bring the wrap and the formed chipboard lid or base together, adhering them in perfect alignment before forming the finished tray. We have an Epson 10600 and it won't print Black or Cyan. when the machine starts up i get the "Nozzle Check Error", then i run the regular cleaning and print out a nozzle check sheet, but no black or cyan. I have also gone into the diagnostic menu and done the more powerful cleaning, i think it is all the "SSLC B/C" or something like that. So i have done this now 4 times over a 3 week period and nothing is working. Ok, so we have the technicians manual and my boss wants our pressman to tear into this thing and fix it. Anything else we can try before we tear into it and is it really a good idea for someone to do this who has never done it?

Hey does anyone know if you can change the cyan screen angle when printing at 175lpi, i know it changes when you change the lpi but 175 is optimal for most print jobs except for the cyan which prints like crap when a stipple (basically prints lines of cyan dots at 90 degrees).

Hi all, We already have a web site (custom built) where clients can upload their own files or select one of our templates and provide information for all the fields on those templates. However, they do not see a proof online either when they upload files or select a template online and provide information for the template. In both cases, our designers email them an online proof. I am looking for software that will - 1.) Show an online proof to all clients who upload their files to us. We usually get PDFs/Publisher Files/EPS files etc. uploaded. I primarily want to eliminate the extra step we have to take to send proofs to them. 2.) Show online proofs for templates that they select to customize online. These templates are our designs and if needed we can re-create/re-tag the fields on these templates based on the solution we choose to go with. I am not looking for a store front at this point ...just a solution that will integrate with our existing web site to offer online proofs. We do intend to a get a full-featured solution with online design, variable data capabilities, PURLS, emails etc. in the next year or so. I just don't want to rush into that. The ability to provide online proofs will give me breathing space, while I evaluate all solutions and budget for one of those. Ram.

We have purchased a AGFA LDT85 CTP device. The model # is PT-R4300S. We do not have PrintDrive, which served as a tif catcher that drove it previously. We did have opportunity though to successfully test some screened tif (plate) files from RAMpage that output very well on the LDT85, but all we did was drop those tifs into PrintDrive. But, like I mentioned, we do not have PrintDrive. Is it possible to drive the LDT85 from RAMpage somehow? Do we have to have PrintDrive? Or some other rip/station that would serve as a tif catcher to drive it? Thanks for any advice!

As a faculty member at a university, we have students taking our graphic communications courses from all over campus, many with backgrounds in web. Since we stress the area of print, I have pushed the following philosophy on file formats. For raster images: .jpg is acceptable, .tiff is better All flies should be flattened You should never place a native format (.psd) into a layout program that is designed for print. If you want to drop a background, you create a clipping path and save the file as an .eps. For vector images: All placed file should be .eps, not ai. With the fluidity of CS products, Adobe allows for placement of many different types of file formats but I always felt that the statements above should be followed without exception. Does anyone have any general comments on these statements? thanks
