A Massachusetts company that has invented a genetically-engineered organism that converts sunlight, water and carbon dioxide directly into fuel is building its first production facility in New Mexico.

Last week, I took my kids to watch the shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The launch was supposed to be the final launch of Endeavour and the second to last launch of the shuttle before the fleet is retired this summer. Mindful of the vagaries of the weather and the unpredictability of technical problems, we waited until the last minute to make our non-refundable reservations. We may not have seen the shuttle launch, but we did see some pretty impressive displays of how NASA is using solar energy here on EarthWe did not hide our disappointment at not seeing the Shuttle blast off into the cosmos. Positive headcount development

The U.S. economic recovery and the upturn particularly in the automotive sector were key drivers of Bosch's strong 2010 regional result. Growth in all business sectors with focus on energy-efficiency

In Automotive Technology, Bosch in North America recorded significant sales of $5.6 billion in 2010, 24 percent more than in the previous year (2009: $4.5 billion).  Apart from solid capacity utilization as a result of the industry's recovery, the company strengthened its position as a leading automotive supplier, with high-quality products that reduce fuel consumption, and increase safety and driver comfort. (TSX-V: NXT; NTCXF.PK) have shown that Natcore's liquid phase deposition (LPD) process can be used to apply an antireflective (AR) coating to textured solar cells as well as standard planar cells, thus opening the door for the industry to achieve even further wafer thickness reductions by eliminating the thermal vacuum AR coating process altogether. One of the primary ways solar cell manufacturers are striving to reduce the cost of manufacturing silicon solar cells is to reduce the thickness of the wafers from which the cells are made.  As the wafers get thinner, however, they lose the ability to fully absorb the light that strikes their front surface; consequently, the efficiency falls. A technique commonly employed to overcome this fundamental limitation is to isotropically etch the front surface of the wafer in order to form a regular pattern of small pyramids on it.  The shape and angles of the pyramidal faces are such that more light is refracted into the crystal over a range of angles that prevent the light from travelling straight through the solar cell and being incompletely absorbed.  The process, known as texturizing the wafer surface, has gained widespread acceptance in the solar cell industry.

Once texturized, the cells are put through the remaining standard cell processing steps, which include adding the AR coating and the contacts. A growing problem, however, is that the conventional AR coating process requires the cells to travel through a vacuum furnace. As the wafers get thinner and thinner, the conventional AR coating process causes them to warp, reducing the yield from the production process.

Reflectance is the proportion of light striking a surface that is reflected from it. For solar cells, the optimum reflectance is zero; a typical industry reflectance is about six percent. Measurements made at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, show that the reflectance from texturized wafers coated with Natcore's LPD antireflective coating is reduced to well below two percent over the entire absorption band of silicon solar cells. This represents a two-thirds reduction from the typical reflectance achieved by standard industry practices today, and would be accompanied by an increase in cell efficiency.

Fairfax-based ManTech International Corp. will help the government figure out how to cut the upfront cost of solar power installations under a contract worth $4 million over the next 17 months.

Italy's environment and industry ministers reached an accord on plans to cut solar incentives, the environment minister said on Wednesday, after delays that had aroused complaints from international investors and solar firms.

With the aid of nanotech materials, scientists have engineered a new way to convert the sun's heat into electricity that is roughly eight times more efficient than previously reported solar thermoelectric devices.

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Southwest Solar Technologies Inc. today announced an agreement with Burns & McDonnell Engineering to research and test new solar technology at the Southwest Solar Research Park in Phoenix, Arizona. Southwest Solar’s 18-acre, state-of-the-art, secured facility is located just south of Sky Harbor Airport. The focal point of the facility is a 75-foot diameter concentrating solar dish. This dish is the largest commercial solar dish in North America, one of the largest in the world.
  
Burns & McDonnell is leading a collaboration with Abound Solar, Inc., a leading manufacturer of next-generation, cadmium telluride thin-film photovoltaic modules, Suntech Power Holdings Ltd., the world’s largest producer of photovoltaic modules, and Power-One, Inc., a leading manufacturer of renewable energy and energy-efficient power conversion and management solutions, to install a 3.5kW photovoltaic (PV) test system. Burns & McDonnell provides engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting services to clients throughout the world.

The 3.5 kW installations will consist of three solar arrays configured with test instrumentation with the primary objective to determine the effect of different types and amounts of cooling on the test arrays. Additionally, the arrays will be adjustable so that the effects of varying tilt angles can be tested. Two different types of solar modules, Thin Film and Crystalline Silicon, will be compared to see their performance relative to different ambient conditions. Lastly, long-term performance data will be collected on both the modules and the inverters.

Southwest Solar is working on renewable energy’s toughest problems: mitigating intermittency, eliminating water use, and reducing the significant capital costs associated with solar energy solutions. SKOKIE, Ill., May 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Tecta Solar, a division of Tecta America Corp., recently installed a 406 kW peak solar photovoltaic energy system on the roof of the Administrative Center at GlaxoSmithKline's campus in Upper Providence, PA.  GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) recently announced its commitment to becoming a carbon neutral business by 2050.

The installation of the solar energy system in Upper Providence was financed, in part, by a $500,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority.  Tecta applied for the grant via a competitive application process on behalf of GSK.

"Tecta Solar is proud to partner with GSK to design and install one of the largest rooftop solar photovoltaic energy systems in Pennsylvania," said Ken Beiser, managing director for Tecta Solar. "The project was completed on time without impacting ongoing operations within the building."

Under the Pennsylvania Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard, the system installed at GSK is registered as a solar photovoltaic system.  The system annually provides an estimated 515 Pennsylvania Solar Alternative Energy Credits (515 megawatt hours), which are equivalent to the power that 50 Pennsylvania homes consume annually.

The roof has 1,848 solar modules that have been installed with a ballasted roof system and produces annual environmental offsets of approximately 897 pounds of nitrogen oxide; 4,287 pounds of sulfur dioxide, and 626,753 pounds of carbon dioxide.  A Solectria inverter collects energy from the roof array.  It also reports real-time energy output through a web-based system.
