You want inspiring? You want a woman whose story needs to be shouted from the rooftops as a source of inspiration for all of us? Sure, every single athlete who finished here in St. George last year proved they are among the grittiest athletes in the world. Karen Aydelott, though, takes it all too a new level. Somehow she manages to hide, under an extremely modest and easygoing demeanor, the determination, tenacity and true grit of one of the most incredible champions I've ever met. With the surging popularity of barefoot running, it would seem that for the triathlete, barefoot running currently ranks up there with all-you-can-eat buffet coupons, a Clydesdale triathlete cycling in front of you on a windy day, and unicorns that toot free energy bars.

But although I didn’t grow up in a small pack of wolves or come from a remote tribe of natives living at 18,000 feet of elevation, I will readily admit that I can understand and agree with the benefits of barefoot running, especially the part about making your feet strong.

After all, if you spend all day in big, padded shoes, each of your feet will be like the little fairy tale princess who is never allowed to venture outside the confines of the mighty fortress: really weak (but still pretty hot) and easily wounded, bruised or broken by the slightest of encounters with the roughness of the real world (like witches or dragons or big rocks). In other words, you need to treat your feet more like a fairy tale peasant – ready and willing to traipse naked and dirty through the forest and fields.

The problem is, even though barefoot running is really good for strengthening and stretching the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones in your feet, it’s pretty dang inconvenient at times.

Take my house for example. Outside my front door is a world of concrete, pavement, broken glass, small stones and pine needles that turn a casual barefoot running attempt into an adventure in pain management and self-wound care.

So in order to turn my feet from a princess to a peasant, I have to tack an extra 10-15 minutes onto a barefoot run to drive, bike or run to a soft, grassy park, take off my shoes, pray there are no sprinkler heads, then run around and around and around until I’m dizzy and bored, and finally spend the time investment getting back home.

But shouldn’t it be possible to get the foot blessing benefits of barefoot running without actually barefoot running? You bet! Here’s 3 ways to do it:

1. Calf Raises and Single Leg Balancing: Both of these activities can easily be done in the comfort of your own home. Perform calf raises while in the shower (work up to 50 double leg or 25 single leg), and single leg balancing while brushing your teeth. Once single leg balancing gets easy, try to shift to your toes, and also try to do more difficult activities on one leg, such as dumbbell curls, typing on your computer, or making love. Of course, this strategy requires you to walk around your house without your shoes on, but that’s one place where your pretty princesses will hopefully be safe.

2. Bosu Ball or Balance Disc: You’ll find either of these balance devices at most gyms, and you can easily buy them at a sporting goods store. Stand on either for 3 sets of 30-60 seconds on one leg with your eyes closed. For added difficulty, add partner taps, in which a partner attempts to throw you off balance with light shoulder taps. You can also do exercise like dumbbell curls and dumbbell presses while you stand on these balance devices.

3. Jump Rope: Repetitive impact with a plyometric hopping motion like jump rope will stress and strengthen the bones and soft tissue in your feet, and teach your joints to absorb impact properly – similar to barefoot running. Practice both double and single leg hopping, and if you’d like to count like a schoolgirl, knock yourself out. If you don’t have a jumprope, try jumping jacks in your barefeet or socks. I actually do these in my office, and I haven’t been fired yet.

Today’s high-tech, ultra-supportive shoes can definitely leave your feet weak, just like that fairy tale princess. But a consistent combination of the activities outlined above can leave you with strong feet – without actually requiring you to do barefoot running. And if you are a princess reading this article, my sincere apologies. I’m sure you’re good at other stuff.

I wanted to do two hours on the treadmill, but I just didn't have it in me. In retrospect I think it may have been unrealistic - the story of this whole semester (of my whole life!) has been one of extreme and impossible overload, insomnia/anxiety tip-over and then systemic erosion of willpower for whatever's left of the dregs of obligation after the main vessel has been cleared. I have pushed too hard over the last couple weeks, that's the long and the short of it. This sort of thing is the price one pays for it.

(Needless to say, I am not very happy about flaking out on a workout, but it is just going to have to go down as one of those things!)

I got off at the one-hour mark for a quick pee break, and had to give myself a stern talking-to about getting back on again - but 6 or 7 minutes into the second hour, I just mentally no longer had the gumption to stay on! I think I should have got myself over there either earlier in the day or with more calories in me, but possibly it was just overreaching even to think I was going to be able to do it. It is just so warm and airless in there!

This is a "recovery" week; I think I'll do one half-hour run outside in the early evening on Saturday or Sunday (I have no heat acclimation, so there's no point trying for a longer one outside - I know that even 30 minutes will be pretty taxing - it's 85F and 70% relative humidity, it takes getting used to even for those better suited to heat than I am). I want to ride both weekend days, but am still undecided about whether to stick with original plan of 2 hours tomorrow and 3 hours Sunday or to perhaps try and do another 5-hour ride on Sunday; it's a pity for me not to get one in while I'm here, in a way, in the land of no bridges! I am not going to take another stab at the two-hour treadmill run tomorrow morning, though I suppose I could; it seems too likely that I will flake out on it again, and really as long as I leave very early (traffic is more an issue than heat - roads here are dangerous!) it would be a much more enjoyable thing to have a bike ride.

Not quite as long as I had envisaged - I wanted to swim to the Ritz and back, which I think of as an hour each way, but in fact the first half-hour out was incredibly slow. I was swimming straight into current, much more bobbing up and down than forward movement, and a wall of salt water in the face whichever side I breathed on! It seemed like I was going nowhere, although periodic looks at the shore showed me that I was indeed making some forward progress...

(I swim parallel to the shore, which means there's always a bailout option.)

At the one-hour mark, I was still a bit short of the Ritz; thought about continuing, on grounds that I was fairly certain that the swim back would be quite a bit quicker, but slight queasiness made me feel it was sensible to hew to the original one-hour turnaround plan. It does not quite have the same ring to say I swam to the Cayman Club and back, but that is the fact of the matter!

As soon as I turned around, it was the most blissful swimming - still water, with perhaps a slight assist from current - all of the body rotation and glide that had been missing from my initial buffetted swim were back in spades, and it was near-magical - right down to the fact (unprecedented in my experience) that I was accompanied all the way home by a small fish that swam along by my side! This sounds cute, but in fact it was more annoying; I kept on seeing it out of the corner of my eye and having an urge to brush it away! (Not sure exactly what it was, but it could have been a glassy sweeper? Hmmm, maybe not - at any rate it was diminutive and yellow-and-salmon-colored...)

Total swim time: 1:37. Did not have the vim to extend swim past home, given ongoing queasiness; water and Clif bar have now mostly settled my stomach. So: well short of two hours, but this is actually a good length of swim for me to do regardless, as it is about what I am looking at for my IM swim (2.4 miles) - hard to tally exactly, since it depends on positioning and sighting as well as fitness on the day, but I think the time range I can reasonably expect for that swim is 1:35-1:50, probably at the slower end of the range.

Britain's Liz Blatchford has the honour of starting the Monterrey ITU Triathlon World Cup as competitor number one on Sunday in Mexico. Blatchford has enjoyed a good start to 2011 and is the highest ranked athlete starting the women's race.

Currently eighth in the world, Blatchford will look to consolidate on her good start to the season. She finished eighth at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series Sydney last month, seventh at Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup in March and second last weekend at St. Anthony's Triathlon in Florida. She will face competition from USA's Sarah Haskins, who won at St. Anthony's.

Also joining Blatchford will be Non Stanford and Abbie Thorrington.

Todd Leckie is one of five Britons in the men's race having recovered from appendicitis that was diagnosed immediately following his podium finish at the British Elite Duathlon Championships at the end of March.

Marc Jenkins, Harry Wiltshire, Matthew Sharp and David McNamee complete the line up.

Athletes will race a single lap 1500m canal swim followed by a completely flat eight-lap 40km bike course. The 'almost flat' run course covers four laps in hot conditions to complete the 10km.

ITU Triathlon World Cup events have less of a focus than the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series, but provide valuable international racing opportunities as well as point scoring opportunities towards qualifying slots at the Olympic Games. The race also offers a $50,000 prize purse.

Ever wanted to give it all up and train full-time for triathlon, living the life of a professional athlete? Time to train, time to recover and all of the latest kit and equipment - the dream! Well... it might not be quite like that, as Ironman athlete Joanna Carritt highlights here as she gives a great insight into the finances and work of being a triathlon professional. How did I ever have time for a job? I sometimes wonder that when weeks seem to go by with very little by way of free time between training and being glued to the laptop in order to keep on top of the To-Do list. After a particularly intense period prior to the start of our training camp camp, I began to wonder – what happened to the stress-free life that I was ‘buying‘ by giving up my paid job in the city? My days were starting just as early and finishing later than they had even then – and as a result of developing my own business carried similar levels of pressure when things took longer, more effort or didn't work out the way I planned. It struck me then that whilst I'd given up conventional employment to chase a dream, my new 'job' was making that dream happen – and it was a 24/7 position! People tend not to discuss their personal finances much. I'm not sure why it's so culturally unacceptable, but my experiences from the interviews that I have provided over the last year, and talking to friends, is that people are naturally interested in the economics of my career change. So I thought I'd offer you a little insight into the financial reality of becoming, and thereafter being, a professional Ironman triathlete – and how that translates into day to day life which resembles a highly unstructured day-job! Now, once an athlete has some high profile results to their name, their sponsorship deals take much more of a currency-based form and paid like a salary – with results-based bonus on top of this. The current worlds best, and previous event champions may be offered appearance fees by race directors to come and race. Triathlon teams are beginning to emerge, with a collective sponsorship cache and financial support structure for the athletes on the team - but for all but a very few, to achieve this status requires several years of prior investment in our racing careers. Of course there is a wide range of different experience and type of career progression within the elites of our sport, but even those at the very top of the sport need, or have needed at certain time in their career, forms of funding significantly above what it is possible to earn from prize monies and through sponsor supply of kit on their way up the ranks. So, whilst I'm now certainly enjoying living the dream and have a lifestyle that enables me to train week-long and travel to the warmest side of the globe for long periods during the year, it's not a life that excludes 'work' in the more conventional sense. When I was working full time as an engineer I'd work a 35-40hr week and endeavor to fit in around 20hrs of training. That was a pretty tough schedule, but I was earning enough money to cover two or three international races each year, my gym and club memberships, triathlon kit, equipment and maintenance costs on top of the cost of living in rented accommodation close to central London. Now, I've dramatically reduced my living costs, and have been extremely well supported by my partner and family, but the basic costs of this lifestyle still have to be met by some form of income. The balance had tipped somewhat – race performance is what will ultimately make the profession pay, so training is my priority; so now it's training 30-35hr/week and finding time to work in between that. The paid 'work' that I do is largely online coaching work; providing training plans and mentoring for age group athletes. Everyday Training (www.everdaytraining.org.uk) is something that Steven and I started up about two years ago and has grown since then. I've had an average of nine athletes through the year, and my estimate is that I spend on average 1.5-2hrs/week per athlete setting schedules, email correspondence, answering queries and discussing issues/ideas with Steven. A further 2-3 hours of each week will be spent on developing the service – writing blog-posts, keeping our website / Twitter / Facebook content up to date and keeping client files and accounts in order. This year we hosted our first week-long training camp in Lanzarote, which required a substantial time input – something in the order of 1-2 hrs/day over a 3 month period – organizing all the logistics for that. And of course 10 long solid days on site preparing and hosting the camp – though the latter was far more of a pleasure than a 'Job' and did incorporate a degree of training too. The camp was a huge success and much of the ground-work has been laid for future camps (we plan 2 or 3 per year), which will be less time-consuming in the organisation. In all I estimate that my EverydayTraining 'job' is around 25hrs of work each week. Our client base is now just about large enough that we are no longer using saved funds to pay our daily living costs, but although I continue to learn ways to be more efficient, there is only a certain amount of time I can set aside for coaching and still provide the sort of service to each athlete that I want to - therefore this is a limited income source for the time being. Then there's the 'professional' part of being a professional athlete; time spent doing the non-athletic parts of the job. Keeping in touch with my existing sponsors and Team, petitioning potential new sponsors, work on my own website and blog, maintaining as much presence in the triathlon press as possible, and getting involved in local events as well as online discussions is as important for my current and future sponsors. I estimate at least an hour per day is spent in this way and although this 'work' does not generate any actual income, through personal sponsorship** and my involvement with the Challenger World UK Triathlon Team (formerly Team TBC), I am able to cover a fairly significant portion of my kit, equipment, sports nutrition and training facilities costs. Aside from the promotion and marketing, as a pro athlete I must also devote at least a few hours per week on travel arrangements and bookings, liaison with race organizers and governing bodies, account-keeping and of course in discourse with my own coach. Lets say that 10hrs /week is spent on profile development, sponsor correspondence and admin. As an athlete's race results and career develop and they climb the ranks of the sport, more and more of their time will be dedicated to this aspect of work - and in most cases less (or no) additional paid work is necessary - in any case, there simply would not be time! For me at the moment it's adding up to an average of 70 hours/week if I include the swim, bike run and gym aspects of my 'job' – I don't spend more than eight hrs a day in bed, so I'm still at a loss as to where that spare 6 hours each day goes!! ** thanks to Quintana Roo and Litespeed, Powerbar, Vitabiotics, Tone Leisure and Haringey Leisure

Last month we introduced our two 'Ironman virgins' Matt Molloy and Boo Alder who we will be following in the lead up to Ironman Austria this year on Sunday 3rd July. Tri247 will be present in Klagenfurt, your Editor returning for the first time since he raced himself (!) there nine years ago. As part of the lead up to the event we thought it would be interesting to follow the progress to two athletes who have decided to make Austria their first Ironman race, who approach the race with very different degrees of experience and expectations. Here is Matt's second update, where he outlines the methodical approach he has taken to try and achieve what he and coach Bill Black feel is a realistic target first time out - qualification for the Ironman World Championship in Kona. Having decided to do my first ironman and elected my race of choice, the next step was to identify what was required (in terms of performance) to achieve my goal of Kona qualification and then put measures in place to give myself the best chance of achieving it. Trusting Bill's judgment we agreed that, whilst I could not control what others could do, qualification was a realistic target. The results from IM Austria 2010 indicate that there were 7 Hawaii slots available in the M40-44 age groups and that the 1st two athletes posted 8:47's and the roll-down went down to 14th position who posted 9:30. The 7th athlete posted 9:26. In terms of approach, I knew that the physical side (i.e. doing the right type and volume of training) would take care of itself. The programme agreed and set by Bill is based on a level of training that is achievable week in week out, but with the ability to increase the number of sessions if circumstances allows. However, before getting my head down I took the opportunity to look at my technique in all three disciplines to identify any flaws and also whether I needed to make any adjustments for going long. In that regard, I enlisted the help of Paul Newsome (Swimsmooth) to look at my swim technique, John Dennis (Velomotion) to look at my bike set up and Mike Antoniades (The Running School) to look at my running style. My take was that it was better to address any shortcomings early. Looking back now, there is no doubt in my mind that the help I've had on this front has been invaluable and has resulted in getting faster and more efficient in all three disciplines. As well as the physical and technical aspects, two further areas which I have focussed on are nutrition and the mental side. In terms of nutrition, I sought advice from experienced triathletes (either those who I knew directly and/or online on TriTalk) as well as reading up on and researching what nutrition strategies the PROs use. Daryl Carter gave me some good pointers in that regard. Armed with the information I gathered, I've been training my gut to take on board the calories required to fuel myself for an ironman at the intensities that I will be racing at. I've also looked at the best way to carry and/or take on board the nutrition which has involved me looking at bike/bottle cage set up and clothing choices. I adopted a two pronged approach to the mental aspect. First, it was a matter of covering the distances – either in single disciplines or two together. So, for example I had the opportunity to do the swim and bike legs as part of two relay teams in an iron distance race at my planned ironman race intensity, which gave me the confidence that I could deal with the swim and bike legs. I also did plenty of 3.8k swims, a couple of 100mile TT's and a few marathons (Dublin in Oct 09 and London in 2010 and 2011). The second limb of my mental preparation was to train the mind to deal with the negative thoughts and the “body wants to stop” moments that may well arise. Having experienced those negative thoughts in a couple of 70.3 races during the run in 2010 (Half Ireman and Clearwater), I knew that there was some work to be done in that department. Again I enlisted the advice of more experienced athletes. I received some great tips, the most notable was that posted on TriTalk by DIMUK winner Hywel Davies. Bill also hooked me up with sports psychologist Louise Jones of Thought4Sport and the sessions and exercises I've been doing with Louise have been great and boosted my confidence no end. I'll go into some more detail on my mental approach and outlook next time. Bye for now.

International Racing Last weekend was a huge one in terms of high-profile international races - so much so that we had to put together an article (revisit the weekend HERE), just to link all all of the individual race reports together so you caould all follow what was happening... Things are a little quieter this weekend, but there is still some quality racing on offer. By far the most interesting event, at least from a British viewpoint is Ironman St. George, Utah. Why? Because after a couple of (very successful) years of mixing middle and long distance races into her ITU schedule, Jodie Swallow will be racing her first Ironman event. With World Championship titles at ITU Long Distance (2009) and Ironman 70.3 (2010), Jodie comes into the event with all the pedigree and skills needed to kick-off with a win at her first attempt. It won't be easy for anyone - the course is an incrediby tough one - just check out the bike course and run course profiles. Throw in some altitude too... All that said, in my eyes Jodie is the clear favourite, even with the presence of last years top two Heather Wurtele (CAN) and Meredith Kessler (USA). I was fortuante to witness at first hand Jodie win the Alpe d'Huez Long Course race last season, 29 minutes clear of Rebekah Keat, so she has proven ability at this type of terrain. Good luck Jodie! For the men, 2010 winner Michael Weiss (AUT) will start as favourite to retain his title, but second placer Ben Hoffman (who went on the win Ironman Lake Placid last season) will be in the mix with the Team Commerzbank pairing of Maik Twelsiek and Matthias Hect. Also from the WTC, there will be a few athletes hoping to have recovered from last week's Ironman Australia/Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie in time for Ironman 70.3 Busselton. ITU racing this weekend in World Cup fromat from Monterrey, Mexico where Liz Blatchford, Non Stanford and Abbie Thorrington are listed for the British ladies, and Marc Jenkins, Harry Wiltshire, Matthew Sharp, David McNamee and Todd Leckie for the men. Also the Powerman Duathlon Series returns, this time with Powerman Italy, more on that here: www.powermanitaly.it 2010 winner Joerie Vansteelant will be the hot favourite for the men, while Michelle Parsons will look to add another victory to her Powerman Alabama win in March. UK Events We've always considered May the 'real' start of the triathlon season in the UK, and that is reflected in the number of events on the schedule this weekend. Saturday The Gower Duathlons in Wales (late entrants check HERE to reserve a place), The TRI Nations Triathlon (more HERE), the Mass Start Swim Series (Box End, Kempston more HERE) and OWS Aquathlon Race 1 at Liquid Leisure (more HERE) make up Saturday's racing, and for a change all might be available for late entrants if you still fancy some race action this weekend - however do contact the organisers directly on the links provided, don't just take our word for it! Sunday With a packed Sunday, we'll pick out a few potential highlights. The Marshman Triathlon is one of the first opportunities for middle/long course athletes to test out their winter training in the UK, and in a short time has built up a nice following. Tri247 columnist Sarah Lovelock is on the list for this one, having one the Marshman 'plus' event last season. 2010 Marshman winner Ben Ward returns as well. There are also - really - a couple of athletes called ' Mr Marshman'... Costwold Water Park, Cirencester is always popular and hosts its Cotswold Super Sprint Triathlons on Sunday. Just Racing UK (www.justracinguk.com) have their Grendon Triathlon which could well be the most competitive event of the weekend. The ladies race for example features Lou Collins, Lucy Gossage, Mari Rabie, Sky Draper, Jenny Latham, Lucy Smith and possibly others which will ensure a fiercely contested battle between a host of British, European and World Champions, plus an Olympian. Yes, I made it safely to Cayman - feel as though I have hardly slept properly for, well, WEEKS - a great relief to be here and have now a bit of a breather before the big push to grade end-of-semester work - but had a very nice little swim in the sea just now. Will do a longer one tomorrow morning and a long treadmill run later in the day, then a short bike Saturday and a long bike Sunday.

(Caught sight of friend Max and dogs frolicking outside, ran down to say hello; have a date for a Monday 7am swim with Max, though dogs will not accompany!)
