Description:

ISA Server was unable to write content to the cache file.

 

Frequently during certain periods of the day not necessarily at the peak times. Users were all internal web proxy clients. Apart from this event there was no real disruption in the ISA server operations. But admin wanted to know why it was occurring.

 

Troubleshooting and Solution

1. Admin had antivirus on the ISA server, Admin had not excluded the ISA folders from antivirus scanning.Made sure admin had excluded all the ISA server folders from antivirus scanning as per following article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc707727.aspx. Then we monitored it for a day and it came back up again during different times a day.
2. Followed the suggestions given in following blog post by Yuri Diogenes http://blogs.technet.com/b/yuridiogenes/archive/2010/01/30/isa-server-triggers-lots-of-14197-events.aspx and enabled. Auditing for object access To see which process was accessing it at the time we get the event. Then went through the logs and there were only two processes accessing it all the time wspsrv(firewall service) and mspadmin(ISA control service) accessing the cache folder which is right they are supposed to do that. It still does not explain why we were getting those events.
3. Engaged the performance team to check the health of the Hard drive as in perfmonce montor I saw Avg. Disk queue length spiking randomly but it was around 2 most of the time not above it. Performance team informed us that C drive although is very active but still not (Avg. disk queue length counter)spiking at the time when we see the events.
4. Then once again started looking at how the cache is configured and saw the cache drive size which was 1000 MB on the C drive. Asked customer about the number of users who access the internet through ISA in an average, although he was not sure but he said it should be around 5000 users.  Explained him that 1000MB is too less for 5000 users.
5. What’s the right number was question by admin and answer is provided in following blog post by me http://blogs.technet.com/b/sooraj-sec/archive/2010/04/12/formula-for-cache-drive-size.aspx as per which cache drive size for this scenario should be

0.5*5000+10MB=2510MB

      6.  We changed the value to 2510MB and monitored and Event never occurred again.

 

 

 

If you have heard of Certificates Next Generation (silly name, I know), which is why people call them V3 templates at Microsoft most of the time, then you might wonder or already know that there could be some compatibility issues - the same is true for all "new" things. Just like my new office power requirements were not even thought of when this house I live in was built. Okay, that aside, I have posted a new article on the TechNet Wiki that I would like people to see Incompatible with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (Version 3 or V3) certificate templates and help me develop - if they run into issues. Please, log in with your Live ID and add any V3 template compatibility issues that are not already listed that you have or at some point encounter. Otherwise, just read the article and be warned.

一方で、最新の現場な話とか、違う視点で情報のハブになっている人の話を聴くことは実際に技術を使い始めるととても重要だったりします。日本だと結構そういう現場ノウハウって会社のナレッジとして取り扱われることが多くて、なかなか外部に発信しないという傾向が強いです。

そんな背景の中、マイクロソフトではコミュニティでのマイクロソフト テクノロジー情報の発信などの大きな貢献に対して Microsoft MVP プログラムというものがあり、そうした現場や教鞭をとっておられる方々に Microsoft MVP というある意味「マイクロソフトからの御礼」をお届けしています。こういう方々は積極的に情報を発信いただいており、現場に有益な情報を数多くコミュニティに提供しています。

One of the main priorities of the Windows Phone Marketplace team is to help the developer community more easily publish applications and games to Windows Phone Marketplace. During the past month, we’ve focused on streamlining the overall app submission process and adding clarity to our certification requirements. Today, we’re happy to announce that we’ve made some important changes that will make your life easier.

First, we’ve updated and clarified our content policies and technical requirements to address some of the common questions and points of confusion that we have heard from several developers. These requirement changes will go into effect on June 3 for new applications and application updates.

Second, we have added several test steps to the technical certification requirements to help developers conduct in-house application testing during the development cycle, in order to avoid common certification pitfalls and to improve pass rates and certification times.

Finally, the application certification requirements for Windows Phone have now been integrated into our MSDN developer documentation. You can find the updated certification requirements here.

We hope that these changes will help you to more easily publish your amazing apps and games to Windows Phone Marketplace.
